In busy and historic cities, traditional open box metro stations are becoming outrageously difficult, unacceptable for the citizen and uneconomical. Hybrid stations provide an interesting alternative. In-house experience of Gautrain (South Africa), West bay (Qatar), Cairo line 3A (Egypt), and Melbourne (Australia) all aim to reduce disturbance to the city and its inhabitants during construction. Constructed in rock or in deep soil under water table, they take advantages of the latest construction techniques from cement grouting to freezing, and from traditional excavation of cavern to large tunnels constructed by sophisticated tunnel boring machines (TBM). Today, they form the ultimate construction challenge.

This presentation will describe the process by which the Quebrada Blanca (QB) copper project in northern Chile was financed. It will also show how a relatively junior mining company addressed the problems created by its inability to provide its share of the equity funding and the guarantees required by the project lenders. QB is located in the semi-arid Andean highlands of northern Chile, 170 kilometres southeast of the port of Iquique and 30 kilometres west of the border with Bolivia, at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,000 feet). Figure 1 depicts the project's location. The QB orebody is a secondarily enriched porphyry copper deposit containing reserves of 85 million metric tons grading 1.3 percent copper. Underlying the enriched zone is a significant primary ore zone containing several hundred million metric tons grading about 0.5 percent copper. In the late seventies and early eighties Falconbridge and its affiliates spent $20-30 million dollars exploring the deposit and conducting feasibility studies. For a variety of reasons they decided not to develop the property which was returned to its owners, Empresa Nacional de Mineria (ENAMI), which is a Chilean state mining corporation. In 1988 ENAMI announced its intention to privatize the property through a public bidding procedure.

Any effectuation of a viable program of air pollution control will' require a basic understanding of the chemistry of atmospheric processes, the fate and migration of SO2, and the ultimate health effects of the sulfur oxides themselves. The migration and ultimate fate of Sop discharged into the atmosphere will be discussed with particular emphasis on the various conflicting views and how these relate to our present emission control regulations. Our present lack of knowledge is a severe detriment, and consideration will be given to those particular areas where future research may best be directed to provide the answers to a number of perplexing questions.

Open cast surface mining requires blast hole drilling with many interesting facets in order to achieve mine planning forecasts. Interestingly, no single method or combination of theoretical hypothesis of mining economics is right for all conditions. On occasion mine planners introduce a project with little or no regard to drilling and blasting. Generally, drilling and blasting costs are a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One such drilling and blasting method which can be utilized to reduce overall mine expenditure is inclined or angle hole drilling. One must bear in mind, that angle hole drilling per-se mill not reduce costs, unless a set of required circumstances is met. An attempt will be made to detail when conditions of the mine design criteria dictate the use of angle drilling.

The angular spiral lining system reduces energy consumption and grinding media consumption in grate discharge ball mills. This paper discusses the effect of this lining system on mill product size distribution. Performance comparisons of a grinding circuit outfitted with angular spiral liners in the ball mills are made with respect to standard double-wave liner installations. The angular spiral lining system was developed by Waagner-Biro of Austria. The installation of this lining system at Magma Copper Company, San Manuel, Arizona, is the first of its kind in a grate discharge ball mill used for wet grinding.

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." Minerals Engineering Company (MECO) is a relatively small, promotionally oriented mineral exploration company founded in Colorado in 1948 during the height of the uranium boom. The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970's but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.

Most people, when Borates are mentioned, mentally visualize the famous twenty mule team (really eighteen mules and two horses), trudging across the Mojave Desert or "she burns green Rosie, we are rich." Actually, however, the first use of borax was prior to Babylonian times. Their emissaries had orders to bring borax Iron the Gobi desert for use as a flux by the Babylonian goldsmiths. The borate mineral imported for this is not known but probably was borax. The ancient Persians and Arabians knew about borax and the Arabic word "Baurach" appears in a two thousand year old manuscript. The Sanscrit word for borax was tincana which has been corrupted to tincal. The Chinese were using borax as a glaze in three-hundred B.C. Marco Polo brought the first borax, along with gunpowder and spaghetti, from Mongolia to Europe in the late 1300's. Borax from Tibet was imported to Europe for nearly 500 years. In 1772 boric acid (sassolite) was discovered around Tuscany, Italy as a precipitant from volcanic steam vents. Production of boric acid started there about 1815 and provided the sole competition to the borax from Tibet. Borate deposits in Turkey have been known and exploited on a small scale since the 13th century. It is only recently that the operations are being modernized and production increased. About 1836, borax minerals were found in Chile and Argentina with borax production starting in 1852 in Chile and in Argentina in 1886. During the latter half of the 19th Century, Chile was the principle world producer of borax.

Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

"Gaseous explosions are one of the most hazardous incidents in process and mining industries. Experimental research in this area is shown to be high risk and expensive. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques are reasonable alternatives to experiments; specifically when testing large scale gaseous explosions such as methane explosion in underground mines. The dimensions of a confined space where explosions could occur vary significantly. Thus, the scaling effect on explosion parameters is worth to be investigated using CFD tools. In this research paper, the impact of scaling on the explosion overpressures is investigated by employing two scaling factors. These two factors are the Gas-fill Length scaling factor (FLSF) and the Hydraulic Diameter scaling factor (HDSF). The combinations of eight HDSFs (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 100) and five HDSFs (0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8) will cover a wide range of space dimensions where flammable gas could accumulate. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the selected premixed combustion and turbulence models. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model was used because it shows accuracy compared to the widely used Reynolds’ averaged models for the scenarios investigated in the experiments. Researchers also simulated methane explosions in both deflagration and detonation regimes using different numerical schemes. Three major conclusions can be drawn from the simulation results. (1) The overpressure increases with both FLSF and HDSF within the deflagration regime; (2) in an explosion duct with length to diameter ratio greater than 54, detonation is more likely to be triggered for stoichiometric methane/air mixture; (3) overpressure increases as an increment hydraulic diameter of a geometry within deflagration regime. INTRODUCTION The most typical category of gaseous explosion accidents is methane explosion accidents in the mining industry. It normally leads to significant economic loss and massive amount of casualties (McPherson, 1993). It could occur in unconfined spaces, such as combustion due to flammable gas leakage, as well as confined spaces, such as inner-combustion in process equipment and methane explosions in airways of underground mines. Gaseous explosions in confined spaces are more intensive compared to unconfined spaces provided that the total energy of explosives is the same. In addition, explosion characteristics are also affected by the geometry of a selected confined space. The size of confined spaces commonly encountered in process and mining industries could differ as much as an order of four (Catlin & Johnson, 1992). A better understanding of the scaling effect on gaseous explosions could contribute to explosion mitigation and prevent operation activities within high risk regions. This research paper has investigated this scaling effect and its impact on explosion propagation. The approach to investigate explosions is either experimental or numerical. Large scale explosion experiments are often costly and dangerous (Catlin, 1991; Zhang, Pang, & Zhang, 2011). Lab scale experiments and numerical methods are common alternatives. However, it is not yet clear if the findings in lab scale experiments can be used to represent the explosion characteristics or not. On the other hand, CFD modeling has been used to simulate chemical combustions and, thus, can be used to evaluate the scaling effects in methane explosions."

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations&apos; information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. "1 INTRODUCTION With a land area of 718 square kilometres housing a population of slightly over 5.4 million, as of 2014 (Department of Statistics Singapore 2015), Singapore is a highly urbanised city. Transport infrastructure is critical to keep the country and economy highly connected and functional as the population in Singapore continues to grow. The importance of a robust transport infrastructure is recognised by the Ministry of Transport in Singapore, which is working towards bringing 8 in 10 households within a 10-minute walk of a train station by 2030 (Ministry of Transport 2015). This gives rise to the rapid expansion of the rail network in highly urbanised Singapore, resulting in more tunnelling work having to be carried out in closer proximity to existing buildings. Such tunnelling work is expectedly more challenging and complex, and if not managed effectively, will impose higher risk to the adjacent buildings. Hence, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has implemented specific control measures to mitigate such tunnelling risks and to ensure safety of the public. 2 CHALLENGES FACED BY TUNNELLING WORK IN SINGAPORE 2.1 General Challenges of Tunnelling in Singapore With the increasing densification of the rail network in a highly urbanised setting, rail projects in Singapore are faced with several key challenges. One such construction challenge is constrained construction sites brought about by network intensification. Alongside the growth of the rail network, shown in Figure 1, other infrastructure networks in Singapore are also continuously growing. Underground interchange stations between networks become increasingly common, forcing each underground interchange station to be constructed deeper and in closer proximity to existing buildings (Figure 2). Singapore is not alone in facing this issue. The same can be observed in cities like London, in which its myriad network of subway lines pushes new lines and interchange stations to be constructed deeper."

The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, conducted studies to recover phosphate from four dolomitic southern Florida deposits not currently mined. The samples contained 5.8 to 10.2 percent P205 and 1.7 to 1.8 percent MgO. Chemical analyses of sized fractions indicated that no pebble concentrate (plus 1.2 mm) could be produced from these samples. A scheme was developed that consisted of desliming, grinding, scrubbing, and redesliming the ore to produce a flotation feed. Conventional one-step fatty acid-fuel oil batch flotation tests on the samples resulted in concentrates containing 29.0 to 31.3 percent P205 at flotation recoveries ranging from 72.4 to 96.1 percent of the flotation feed. The MgO content of the concentrates ranged from 0.47 to 1.36 percent. Continuous flotation of the Manatee No. 2 sample indicated that commercial-grade phosphate concentrates analyzing 31.3 percent P205 and 0.55 percent MgO could be produced with a flotation recovery of 89.9 percent. The MgO content of concentrates obtained from the Manatee No. I and Hardee samples was 1.20 to 1.36 percent, respectively. Leaching with aqueous SO2 reduced the MgO content of these phosphate concentrates to 0.5 and 0.8 percent, but with a concomitant loss in phosphate recovery.

This article deals with open pit mine planning and a computer technology known as Direct Block Scheduling, or “DBS”. This is an emerging technology for modeling mine exploitation strategies using mixed-integer linear programming. This technique has proved to yield stronger economic results compared to the Lerchs-Grossmann (“LG”) algorithm currently used at the beginning of the mine planning process. The article briefly describes the shortcomings of current practice; then, this delves into the superior results obtained by DBS technology compared to current practice. Finally, the article argues that results achieve so far by DBS could be enhanced even further. To do this, the framework to apply this emerging technology, which is also used in current practice, should be modified to better exploit the capabilities of DBS technology. To better understand this change, an illustrated case study is presented at the end of the article.

The separation of liquids from granular materials has been widely studied by a number of: investigators over a period of years in an effort to more fully understand the physical phenomenon which occurs. Liquid may be removed from solids, or partially removed, by gravity separation, mechanical separation&apos; or heat drying. Mechanical separation is advantageous when compared to heat drying principally from a cost saving standpoint and also on certain materials which are heat sensitive. It is realized however that mechanical separation of liquids has certain practical limitations. In order to evaluate the efficiency of mechanical separation and predict the extent of, liquid removal, it is first necessary to study the forces which hold the liquid to the solids. From a very practical observation using gravity drainage, it is soon obvious that a pile of coarse solids will drain faster and retain less liquid than a pile of finely divided solids of the same material. For commercial operations it is important to estimate the residual liquid which will remain after a mechanical separation. Batel (1) explored the various quantities of liquid present in the interstices of the bulk granular material. From his work and other authors which he has correlated in one of his recent papers, various formulas are now available which permit an empirical relationship to be developed showing residual moisture versus mechanical separating forces.

Technological change is continually affecting the mining industry and the many papers being presented at this meeting reflect this fact. I fully agree that miners must remain fully cognizant of technology that can change mining costs and therefore your competitive marketplace. Despite the embrace of new technology and effective mine management techniques, the mining enterprise may not realize increased net income if the structure of the minerals marketplace is not understood. An important segment of the marketing structure for minerals is transportation. Transportation costs per ton can be much greater than the mining costs per ton and may accordingly overshadow hard earned gains in productivity. Change is greatly affecting the transportation industry but the change is driven more by governmental policy than technology. Although some technological advances are occurring in the bulk transportation business, the changes I want to address arise from policy. Policy changes have come from legislation in the 1970&apos;s culminating with the Staggers Act of 1980 and ensuing Interstate Commerce Commission decisions.

In 1997, 92.3% or 235.7 Mt (259.8 million st) of coal produced in Wyoming came from the Wyodak coal zone in the eastern Powder River coalfield. The mined portions of the zone consist of one to three beds of coal with an aggregate thickness between 15 and 33.5 m (50 and 110 ft). The thickest expression is 61 m (200 ft). The delivered coal from this zone averages 0.33% sulfur, 5.12% ash and 19.98 MJ/kg (8,590 Btu/lb.). This coal zone occurs at or near the top of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation, which is overlain by the Eocene Wasatch Formation. There is also production from two coalbeds in the lower portion of the Wasatch at the southern end of the basin. Production of coalbed methane derived from the Wyodak coal zone is currently an estimated 289 Mm3/a (10.2 billion cu ft/year). This production is occurring west and downdip from the coal mines and is increasing each year.

The analysis of ground water inflow and discharge from underground mines has received increased attention in recent years due to environmental issues which must be addressed under current state regulations for coal mining and processing operations. In particular, coal operators must assess the probable hydrologic consequences associated with mining activities, and must plan for mine water handling during operation and following completion of mining. The prediction of ground water inflow rates with future mine development allows preparation for potential operational problem and identification of inflow reduction methods. Similarly, evaluation of mine discharge rates is necessary to address potential long-term acid mine drainage (AND) concerns. As part of mine discharge analyses, methods. to control seepage and AMD can be considered. The objective of this paper is to discuss the practical applications of mine inflow and discharge analysis, describe the typical flow components, outline the procedures necessary to perform the analysis, and illustrate the modeling procedures and potential results of mine inflow and discharge predictions.

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in underground longwall coal mines, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines developed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible, physical model of a longwall mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met to accurately represent the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring to prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.
