The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is the fourth panel cave mine in the East Ertsberg Skarn System, (EESS) which lies 500 m below the producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and up to 1,700 m below the surface. The interaction between the DMLZ and DOZ is occurring as the DMLZ cave grows vertically toward the DOZ footprint. During this process, a rapid change in the global mine system stress is anticipated. This change is forecasted to drive substantial changes in the magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the DMLZ and DOZ mines at PT Freeport Indonesia. These changes will bring the mine system closer to the ultimate capacity of the excavations and can result in significant impacts to mine stability if not managed. Critical to this management, is understanding cave growth and locations, as well as how these changes will impact stress conditions.

"Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole," (Baxter and Parks, 1939)."An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence, the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence."The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling."Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive." (McKinstry, et al., 1948).In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not only on the number of samples but also on their proper distribution throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Therefore, it is important to select the places in such a way that all parts of the orebody will be represented."

Occupying a refuge alternative (RA) is an accepted practice in mine fires and explosions when escape is not feasible. MSHA has promulgated a final rule on refuge alternatives that includes a recognition that thermal environment is an important consideration. To this end, an environmental index was specified. The question remains about how to test a refuge shelter to demonstrate that it meets the final rule. The analysis followed five activities: A. Provide an estimate of heat generated by an individual refuge alternative occupant; B. Evaluate the Steadman Apparent Temperature criterion of 95°F; C. Discuss simulations based on body temperature or skin temperature limits; D. Suggest method of simulating human heat generation during refuge occupancy; and E. Suggest alternative methodologies/criteria for evaluating heat and humidity survivability inside a refuge alternative.

This paper presents the development of a new grinding circuit steady-state modeling system. It is fundamentally based on the “functional performance equation”, which has now been used to improve the performance of numerous grinding circuits. This equation characterizes the two distinct efficiencies that are at work in a ball milling circuit, and how these relate to overall circuit productivity. It does so based on the particle size chosen to distinguish between coarse and fine (product size) material. Now, by applying it to all the material size classes, a simple yet reliable ball mill model was created. Combined with cyclone recoveries, the complete, detailed grinding circuit performance can be exactly reproduced mathematically by the computer program. It can then be used with separate process equipment application engineering methods to systematically engineer grinding circuit improvements. Coal mine ground control is the science of the application of rock mechanics principles to coal mining operations. More acceptance of ground control techniques by the US coal mining industry has been seen in the 1980s. It has been demonstrated many times that a proper ground control design is key to a successful coal mining operation. However, numerous in-mine applications of various ground control techniques by the author indicate that cur¬rent techniques need improvement. The biggest problem in coal mine ground control is that miners are dealing with materials of rapidly varying properties and occurrence. And only the exposed surface can be identified positively. Thus, in attempting to solve the ground control problems, many unknown factors are assumed. Some of these problems deriving from such assumptions are discussed here. Coal pillars There are two types of coal pillars - barrier and chain pillars - depending on the purpose. Barrier pillars are those located between panels or sections or mines. Their objective is to isolate the mined-out effects of one from the other. Chain pillars are characteristic of room-and-pillar mining. They are designed to support the overburden load and protect the surrounding entries and crosscuts. Pillar design is the most popular and, frequently, the only ground control technique employed by coal operators for mine design. There are many pillar design formulae available (Bieniawski, 1983; Peng, 1986). Nearly all consider both size and width/height effects. Specifically, pillar strength decreases with increases in pillar size and increases with increase in the ratio of width to height. However, the manner of those changes varies with investigators. Consequently, the pillar size determined varies considerably from investigator to investigator. And the variation grows much more pronounced as the seam depth increases (Fig. 1). The question, then, is which one should be used? One may say each formula is developed for a particular coalfield. A particular formula may have been used to design a pillar, which has not failed. Does that mean it was over designed? Not necessarily, because no one can confirm its stated "safety factor." Recent case studies (Peng, 1986; Tang and Peng, 1988) show that all pillar formulae are too conservative for chain pillar design in room-and-pillar mines due to the following two problems: • Uncertainty about in situ pillar strength. All formulae employ uniaxial compressive strength of selected samples tested in the laboratory and scaled to that for underground pillars. The scaling factors are not well proven. In situ testings by Bieniawski (1969) suggested that 1.5 m (5 ft) pillars are representative of in situ pillars that, after being tested in various US coal mines, are not universally applicable. • Uncertainty about the actual loading on the pillar. The most frequently used tributary loading theory defines the loading as total overburden weight tributary to each pillar (from roofline to surface). This is too conservative when it applies to coal measure rocks. The overburden consists of layered strata of different stiffness. Many stiffer strata will self-support over small roof spans. Depending on the location of these strata above the coal seam, it will reduce pillar loading in various proportions. It follows that total structural analysis using, for instance, finite element method is more appropriate. It can take into account the interaction of roof and floor strata with coal. This paper describes a number of aspects of the design and construction of a driven tunnel which forms part of the Boggo Road Busway project. The driven tunnel is 430m long with an excavated width of 15m and a full tunnel excavation height of 8m. The first section of driven tunnel was excavated under the heritage listed Boggo Road Jail for a length of 120m. The main jail buildings and perimeter walls were built in 1908 and are of brick construction. Ground cover over the tunnel beneath the jail site varied from 5.5m to 8m and as a consequence the predicted settlement values and their potential to cause damage to the buildings were critical to determining and obtaining approval for the selected tunnel alignment. The geology along the driven tunnel alignment was very variable, providing mixed face tunneling conditions and ranging from surface residual soils to high strength rock at depth. The maximum ground cover above the driven tunnel is 20m.

This paper describes major technical developments in rod mill design and operating practice since its introduction into the North American minerals industry over fifty years ago. The basic operating characteristics of the wet, overflow rod mill are described, and significant operating variables are reviewed in terms of their effects on mill power draw, power efficiency, and practical aspects of circuit operation. Key factors for improving the economic performance of rod milling circuits are identified.

"Coal is mainly composed of energy-producing elements carbon and hydrogen. In addition to these elements, coal usually contains many other valuable elements, including iron, aluminum, silicon, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, vanadium, uranium, titanium, scandium and phosphorus. These coalassociated elements are significantly enriched in coal combustion byproduct fly ash because the majority of the main components, carbon and hydrogen elements, being removed. Table 1 provides the chemical composition range of the main element oxides in 12 Chinese fly ash samples collected from coal power plants located in Northeast China, Northwest China, Southwest China and Southeast China. It can be seen from Table 1 that the major mineral components of different ashes are similar, but the bulk chemistry of different fly ashes may vary due to the changes of ratios of the mineral components in different coals. The major mineral components in various Chinese coal combustion fly ash are silicates, iron oxides and unburned carbon.Chinese coal fly ash usually contains about 5 to 15 percent of unburned carbon, which are generally chars with irregular shapes and wide particle size distribution. In addition to unburned carbon, XRD analysis of four Chinese fly ash samples from Liaoning, Shanxi, Guizhou and Shandong provinces indicates that the fly ash samples are composed of minerals such as quartz (SiO2), mullite (3Al2O3.2SiO2 or 2Al2O3.SiO2), hematite (Fe2O3), maghemite (gamma form of hematite, ?-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4). The mullite and quartz particles are usually present as spherical particles because they are formed by melting clays, feldspars, quartz, calcite and other common minerals in coal during coal combustion. The silicate particles have usually entrapped gas to yield hollow spherical particles because their lower melting point facilitates gas entrapment.The iron oxides are usually spherical also. The magnetite (Fe3O4) is derived from pyrite (FeS2), hematite (Fe2O3), siderite (FeCO3) and limonite (2Fe2O3.3H2O) in the coal. Maghemite (?-Fe2O3) is formed by dehydration of the mineral hydrohematite (?-FeO(OH)) and/or oxidation of magnetite (Fe3O4) during coal combustion. Maghemite (?-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) are strongly magnetic, so they are recovered from Chinese coal fly ash and widely used for coal processing in China (Fan et al., 2005, 2000)."

Passive-treatment systems that mitigate acid-rock drainage (ARD) from coal mines have operating since the mid-1980s. Large systems at metal mines are being contemplated. A 95L/sec (1500-gpm) capacity system is planned this year at an underground lead mine in Missouri. Mine, process and environmental managers need to understand how and why passive-treatment systems work. They must understand what operational limitations to expect, as well as the economics of construction and operation compared to the alternatives, like lime precipitation. Wetlands have been recognized as nature's method of improving water quality. Contaminant reductions can occur through the precipitation of metal hydroxides, sulfides and carbonates and pH adjustments. Local conditions, oxidation state and water and soil chemistries dictate whether these natural reactions will occur under oxidizing (aerobic) or reducing (anaerobic) conditions.

Modern transportation systems are one of the most important achievements of our civilization and provide us with tools for broadening individual and social freedom of choice. The transportation system initiated today is handed dawn to the next generation, probably with little choice because of the enormous expenditure of monies involved, and influence their way of life as to where they should live and where they should work. The ever increasing antagonism between the citizens and the planners of the transportation systems necessitates a careful review of the entire planning process. The planning process can be broadly classified into: the goal formulation and decision making process; the plan development process; and the plan implementation process. THE GOAL FORMULATION AND DECISION MAKING PROCESS Goal formulation and decision making is one of the vital phases of the planning process and is primarily based upon social values. In measuring social values, the planner must employ an appropriate scale of measurement since in the absence of this yardstick, these values tend to became vague and abstract ideals. The need for major social programs and concerns (poverty, etc.) of the urban areas should be analyzed to determine the type of transportation system which would contribute to the solution.

The regulations for current coal mine refuge alternative (RAs) require that there be sufficient life support to sustain survival of the maximum number of RA occupants for a minimum of 96 hours. This minimum duration assumes that rescuers can access the RA through the mine within four (4) days of the onset of the mine emergency. But what if mine rescue teams cannot reach the miners within the RA before the RA air supply is severely limited or exhausted? What could be done to extend the duration of the RA life support capability into the 97th hour and beyond? In addition, what might be done to enable more rapid rescue of the miners if they could not be reached through the mine in a timely manner? This paper describes a systems approach to address the potential need to extend the duration of RA life support beyond current design limits. New capabilities that need to be developed in advance of such a dire need include more reliable emergency communications, highly mobile and efficient drilling rigs, enhanced directional drilling techniques, and a standardized RA external life support interface along with RA internal design modifications to accommodate use of an external supply. The following sections describe the need, intent, and technology gaps associated with each of these capabilities. Government agencies and the mining industry should consider initiation of a program to investigate, design, and develop effective means of extending the current 96-hour time restriction on coal mine refuge alternative life support. The development process should begin with a focused study to refine the overall operational concept, investigate the current state-of-the art of critical technologies, identify specific technology development priorities, and make recommendations for a development program to provide in an organized, efficient, and timely manner a solution for extended refuge alternative life support and occupant rescue.

In Huoqiu region of Anhui Province, Fe2O3 occurs mainly in the form of specularite. Besides quartz, the gangue minerals include iron-bearing silicates such as chlorite and sericite which account for about 10% of the total gangue. The separation effect of conventional collectors is poor in the flotation of the minerals, that is, the average grade of iron concentrates is only 60-62%. Using the developed amphoteric collector can successfully realize not only the separation of specularite from various gangue minerals with results of iron concentrate grade above 65% and iron recovery of above 80% but also low temperature flotation at 15°C.

The southwest Pacific has produced at least four of the world’s premier porphyry copper-gold deposits, and the current level of exploration is likely to produce even more. An appreciable amount of gold is being produced with this copper, with obvious economic advantages. Gold content, in addition to their large size, makes the southwest Pacific’s porphyrycopper-gold deposits very attractive exploration targets. The recognition of telescoping and overprinting of porphyry systems has produced a greater awareness of the likely surface expressions, in particular the significance of advanced argillic lithocaps in porphyry exploration. The recognition of the spatial and genetic association of porphyry copper and epithermal gold systems (Sillitoe, 1972), as in other parts of the world, has had important implications for exploration in the Asia Pacific region.

The past several decades have seen the rapid expansion of multinational mining companies? exploration and production activities around the globe. This trend has resulted from a number of factors, including increased demand for resources as a result of worldwide economic growth, the diminishment of known and proven reserves, rising commodity prices, technology improvements, and the liberalization of investment regimes in developing countries with significant natural resources. With those opportunities, however, come associated risks and significantly increased legal compliance obligations that may be imposed by various bodies. That includes domestic regulations, as well as foreign civil and criminal laws with extraterritorial reach. A failure to adhere to those laws can have dire consequences, including substantial monetary fines and penalties, severe damage to a company?s reputation, and even jail time for individual company employees.

The Cortez gold mine is located in Lander County, NR, about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Elko. Cortez Gold Mines (CGM) is a joint venture between Placer Dome US Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corp. (40%). The claims that supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits, all operated by the joint venture. Other deposits outside the CGM claim area include Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain-Eureka Trend. History Mining in the Cortez district began in 1862 with the discovery of high-grade silver ores. Grades in the hundreds of ounces per ton occurred in an area 7 km (4.5 miles) southeast of the current CGM mill site. Underground mining through the Garrison and Arctic tunnels provided the bulk of the ore production between 1864 and 1895. To a lesser extent, the Mill Canyon area also supplied ore until 1930.

Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10µm. The current study examined the effects of operating conditions on centrifuge performance. The test conditions included centrifuge bowl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rates, solids concentration, and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using partition curves, along with product yields and solids concentrations.

In this paper, an innovative approach was adopted to automatically calculate the effects of tunnel induced settlement on buildings and utilities. The approach resulted in increased output quality, consistency, reduced time, cost savings and a greater ability to respond quickly to design changes. The techniques described have been applied to the Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System project, located within the City of Toronto. The automation allowed a very large area of topography, tunnels (6 km), buildings (9000) and utilities (over 1000) to be rapidly evaluated. Visualization of the settlements and impacts also allowed the project design team to optimize the system design to mitigate the settlement impacts.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide) are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines (about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in Arkansas and Michigan. Arkansas, with its six plants, was the leading U.S. state in bromine production. Bromine being the leading mineral commodity valuewise produced in the state. The Michigan bromine production was a byproduct of magnesium compounds production.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously (Snyder et al., 2016).External contracts are broadly classified by the following areas:• Communications and tracking.• Emergency response.o Self-escape and breathing air supply.o Refuge alternatives.o Escape and rescue.• Equipment safety.• Fires and explosions.• Ground control.• Mine environmental systems (mine ventilation and atmospheric monitoring).• Worker/workplace health and safety.Contracts are issued under a request for proposal (RFP), through a broad agency announcement (BAA) or under an interagency agreement (IAA). An RFP solicitation includes a specific problem description and a well-defined scope of work to guide the offeror in preparing a bid to conduct the research. Under the BAA several problem areas are described and the offeror develops the scope of work and deliverables for the proposed research. An IAA is very similar to an RFP except it is a contract between two federal government agencies."

Introduction Argyle is located in the Kimberley region in northwest Australia (Fig. 1). It is a significant diamond discovery by world standards and is the first major diamond find in Australia. The deposit consists of a pipe and associated alluvial deposits. Before the 1970s, diamonds were known to exist only sporadically in Australia. They have been found occasionally in association with gold deposits in Western Australia. There is a small deposit near Copeton in New South Wales. Some alluvial occurrences have also been found in Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. The first indicator minerals in the Kimberley region of Western Australia were discovered in January 1973. Production from the alluvial deposits at Argyle began in 1983. A $430-million construction program to develop a mine and treatment plant capable of producing 25 million carats per year was completed in December (1 carat = 0.2 grams). Ownership and management Participants in the project are known as the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture. The group consists of CRA Ltd., 56.8%; Ashton Mining Ltd., 38.2%; and the Western Australian Diamond Trust (formerly Northern Mining Corp.), 5%. The project is managed by Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CRA. Marketing is undertaken separately by the Western Australian Diamond Trust and by Argyle Diamond Sales Ltd. (for CRA and Ashton Mining groups). History Ownership of the Exploration Joint Venture has changed over the last 12 years as various parties changed their shareholdings. The original Kalumburu Joint Venture was formed in 1972 with five participants, each holding a 20% interest. By 1983, a number of ownership changes had occurred. The end result is that two original participants have sold out. CRA now holds a 56.8% share and the Ashton Mining Group holds 38.2%. CRA also assumed project management in January 1977. Table 1 demonstrates the long lead times involved in developing a project.
