An overview of the evolution of computerized mine planning and design has been given, emphasizing the need for a knowledge-based system for planning and design of underground coal mines. An outline for the development methodology and procedure has been provided. Problem structuring guidelines have been used to incorporate intelligence and integration to the design modules. A skeletal model for a mine planning and design expert system has been prescribed, and the development process has been documented in detail. A feasibility prototype has been developed to test the structure of the skeletal model and to ensure completeness of the design process. The feasibility prototype development and its contribution toward proto typing has been addressed in this paper. At present, prototype development is underway. The prototype is expected to be avail-able for testing and implementation in early 1991.

Polkowice region (Lower Silesia, Poland) is an area, where the copper mining activity started about 40 years ago and new technologies were applied. There are 3 underground mines, 3 processing plants, tailings pond (the biggest one in Europe), pipelines for flotation waste transport, railways. Although new technologies were applied during the copper ore exploitation, the environment in this area were polluted mostly by dust containing copper, lead, zinc and arsenic. Estimated values of heavy metals in polluted soils were compared to the natural contents of this metals. The geochemical background for Polkowice area was defined. The pollution zones occur around mining facilities. Copper ore exploitation and processing is planned for the next 20-40 years depending on market situation. After mines and other facilities closing the most important problem will be sustainable development of this area. To evaluate the scope of revitalization activities the analysis of recent soil environment condition will be necessary as well as forecasts for pollution migration. Geostatistic methods used also in mining will be very helpful for this task.

Bench scale and pilot plant research was conducted using dolomites (CaO,MgO) lime as the basic additive in the preparation of self-fluxed pellets from a typical magnetic taconite concentrate (5.57 S_2). The specific objective of this investigation was to ascertain the viability of the magnesia lime pellets in high temperature oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Pellet basicity and induration temperature were major parameters affecting fired pellet quality; temperatures ranging from 1,200° to 1,250" C appeared to be the most favorable for production of self-fluxed pellets with basesities (B) above 1.0. Comparison of the mechani¬cal and metallurgical properties of regular (acid) and self-fluxed pellets (B 1.55) produced under similar conditions in a modified grate pelletizing machine showed that the self-fluxed pellets were more resistant to abrasion and to high and low temperature reduction disintegration, an important consideration in commercial application. The Plus 3 mesh Linder index increased from 68 percent (regular pellets) to over 90 percent (self-fluxed pellets). The reducibility and swelling indices of the self-fluxed pellets were found to be comparable to the regular pellets.

Formulation and commercial utilization of solid-waste incinerator slag by-product is the focus of this paper. Particular attention is given to iron aluminosilicate melts having compositions similar to that of nature's basalt The earth?s crust can be viewed as an environmental laboratory for predicting stability of various silicates; small-scale laboratory experiments are necessary to confirm findings there from. An ideal slag consumes flux additives at acceptable cost, is compatible with furnace refractory, flows readily from the furnace, and has physical properties suitable for its commercial utilization -all within the critical constraint that the slag is environmentally stable. Examples of successful solid waste slagging practice, including tonnage, utilization and pricing, are provided from metallurgical and waste treatment operations of North America. Mining heritage can be of outstanding value for many regions around the world, because mining has been done for thousands of years for the benefit of mankind and its development. This paper presents an ongoing project creating a general guideline for the handling of mining heritage on the basis of experiences made in Germany. Interactions of stakeholders in the ?heritage network? as well as strategies for the technical proceeding will be described. An action plan for the sustainable handling of mining heritage has already been developed in part, which includes necessary measures. Best-practice recommendations will be derived. During the past three years, a new rear-dumping dragline bucket technology has been patented, developed and tested at North Dakota coal mines. Field testing has shown that this new concept in dragline bucket technology can improve strip-mining efficiencies by reducing cycletimes and increasing dumping radius. This article details the process, participants and the results for the development of a rear-dumping dragline bucket. Participants in the process In November 1995, the board of directors of Dakota Coal authorized the execution of a field test and option agreement and a license agreement with the partnership of D.F. Schmidt, electrical/maintenance supervisor, and Bill Lengenfelder, president of Modern Industrial. The board also authorized entering into a dragline bucket field-testing agreement with the Falkirk Mining Co.

On behalf of ME readers, the editors thank them.During the past 25 years, U.S. ball clay production (the quantity sold or used by domestic producers) increased from 788 kt (869,000 st) in 1990 to an alltime high of 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) in 2003 (Fig. 1). Housing construction within the United States, a leading market for ball clay-based ceramics and sanitaryware, began to decline in 2005, which resulted in a considerable decrease in sales of ball clay that continued through the 2008-2009 economic recession. After bottoming out at 831 kt (916,000 st) in 2009, ball clay production steadily increased through 2015 (Fig. 1). Estimated sales in 2015 were 36 percent higher than those in 1990 and 18 percent lower than those in 2003.Four companies (H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Imerys S.A., Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp.), mined ball clay in five states during 2015. An estimated 1.7 Mt (1.18 million st) of ball clay valued at an estimated $47.5 million was sold or used by U.S. producers, a 4-percent increase from 1.03 Mt (1.14 million st) valued at $45.2 million in 2014. Approximately 65 percent of total ball clay production was air-float, 25 percent was crude or shredded and 10 percent was water-slurried"

"The weathering of coal mine waste rock releases iron, calcium, sulfate and associated trace elements like selenium (Se). Nitrogen species are also found in association with coal-mining drainages mainly due to the leaching of residual blasting compounds. Elevated concentrations of Se are a ubiquitous occurrence in coal-mining environments in British Columbia. A major concern with waterborne Se in British Columbia is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains.Treatment to remove Se from coal-mining waste waters has proven to be challenging for conventional water-treatment technologies. Compounding this challenge, many streams are characterized by high flows and low selenium concentrations. Conventional membrane and ion exchange treatments produce concentrated brine streams that are difficult to treat or require disposal. Conventional biotreatment systems use excess nutrients to provide the required electrons to compensate for inefficient and variable electron availability, as well as to adjust reactor chemistry.This paper's electro-biochemical reactor (EBR) technology provides a controllable and consistent supply of useable electrons to the microbes directly at a low voltage potential (1-3 V) and low current. In this manner, the EBR technology overcomes the shortcomings found in conventional systems, as it reduces the required nutrient addition and provides a more controllable, efficient, economical and robust biotreatment system. Additionally, the EBR process does not produce excess solids or biomass; therefore, solids management post-treatment is not required.Laboratory EBR bench-scale and on-site pilot-scale systems were used to treat five British Columbia coal-mine waste waters; influent Se concentrations ranged from 35 µg/L to 531 µg/L. Se treatment targets for the tested waters ranged from 5 to 10 µg/L. Mean Se concentrations in EBR effluents ranged from 0.5 µg/L to 1.4 µg/L, while reducing sulfate concentrations. The test data demonstrate that the EBR technology is an effective Se removal option for British Columbia’s coal-mining waste waters.IntroductionSelenium in Mining. Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring trace element, which is an essential nutrient in small amounts (Thompson and Robinson, 1980; Brown and Arthur, 2001). However, it is also toxic to aquatic life, birds, and humans at very low concentrations. A major concern with waterborne Se is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains, resulting in acute and/or chronic toxicity to fish, water birds and amphibians (Besser et al., 1996; Conley et al., 2009)."

Fires in underground coal mines are persistent problems anywhere in the world that coal is mined. Coal fires pose safety and health hazards in the form of mine subsidence, loss of energy reserves, destruction of property and surface improvements, and air pollution. In 1995, the US Bureau of Mines (US-BM), in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG),entered into a contract with Goodson & Associates Inc. (GAI) to design and field test the effectiveness of a new foamed grout technology called ThermoCell. GAI is a Lakewood, CO geotechnical and mining reclamation engineering firm. The company developed ThermoCell to control and extinguish underground coal fires. The viability of the special grout and the technology of application were established during a full-scale field demonstration at the abandoned IHI Coal Mine fire, near Rifle, CO. Following acquisition of additional funding by CDMG in 1999, Goodson returned to the site in April to continue the grouting to fully extinguish the IHI fire.

That you are giving the Daniel C. Jackling award to me is a great personal honor. But more significantly, it is a recognition that geostatistics has come of age. And since I am considered by many as belonging to an older generation of geostatisticians, I thought that it would be fitting that I reflect on where geostatistics came from and where it might be going. First, though, let me propose a definition of geostatistics. Etymologically, paraphrasing Webster's definitions of "geo" and "statistics," it is "a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data taken from the earth." This definition is most appropriate in the context of mining geostatistics. It includes both classical and spatial statistics. It emphasizes the earth aspect, or the analysis of geologic features. And it should remind the practitioner that geologic input is a critical part of all geostatistical applications. In the 1910s, statistical methods were already used to analyze geological data. However, the origin of geostatistics, as we know it today, is best set in the late 1940s, when H.S. Sichel recognized the lognormal distribution of sample values in the South African gold mines. In 1951, Daniel Krige observed that "it can be expected that the gold values in a whole mine will be subject to a larger relative variation than those in a portion of the mine." In other words, samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken farther apart. This observation is the foundation on which spatial statistics, which characterizes values defined in a multidimensional space, is built. However, the 1950s were marked by studies based on classical, as opposed to spatial, statistics. It was only in the 1960s that the need was recognized to model the similarity between sample values as a function of the distance between samples and that the semivariogram was defined. A theoretical framework was developed by Matheron that supplied an elegant mathematical explanation to the empirical observations made by Krige. Matheron coined the term "kriging" in recognition of Krige's pioneering work on the geostatistical evaluation of mineral deposits. As soon as this theoretical framework was developed, it was possible to bring geostatistics to the academic world. The "Centre de Geostatistiques" was founded in Fontainebleau. Numerous students were trained there, disciples eager not only to improve the theory and develop more sophisticated mathematical tools, but also to spread the new faith throughout the world. Russia hangs, as usual, like a cloud, dark and silent, upon the horizon. It is a solemn moment. Of our troubles, no man can see the end." By now you, no doubt, are asking, 'Where did Murray get this bit of philosophy?' Well, I obtained it from an editorial entitled. "The Worst of Times", which was published in the Harper's Magazine in 1847. That's right, 1847! The parallelism between the situation in our country at this time and in 1847 is un- canny. But wait, there is one major exception the size of government. To my knowledge, the citizens of 1847 were not stifled by the extreme governmental excesses that we are experiencing today.

Coal is still a part of energy generation worldwide and has a significant role in the sustainable development of countries. The amount of shallow coal deposits is getting scarce, making efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economies. In underground mining operations, longwall mining is a commonly utilized method to extract deep coal deposits. One of the leading engineering goals in longwall mining is increasing the efficiency of the system by investigating the effects of operational factors on equipment. This paper investigates the shearer performance for a longwall top coal caving operation by discrete event simulation that includes modeling the double-drum shearer, belt conveyors, stage loader, and armored face conveyors (AFC) to evaluate system performance by considering the amount of daily coal production of the shearer. As a result, the most influential factor on mine production is determined and a data-based framework is developed. This study suggests a framework for data collection, data analysis, and the interpretation of the operational data to evaluate the primary production unit’s performance. The models developed for the face coal extraction operations in a longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mine have a bi-directional cutting system and can be implemented in other operations readily.

"PROJECT OVERVIEW Crossrail, Europe’s largest construction project, will increase London’s transportation capacity by 10% when it opens in 2018. The Crossrail scheme is a combination of surface and underground railway that stretches 118km east-west through central London from Reading, Berkshire and Heathrow airport in the west to Shenfield, Essex and Abbey Wood in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley in the east. Crossrail will serve 40 stations, ten of which are new, and bring 1.5 million people within 45 minutes commuting distance of London’s key central business districts. 21km of the Crossrail route comprises twin-tunnels beneath the heart of central London. It is the central section of the route, and the challenges that had to be overcome to construct its tunnels under the historic capital that forms the subject of this paper. The route of the Crossrail tunnels can be seen in Figure 1. These tunnels weave their way through the city’s underground landscape, linking eight new underground stations which connect to the existing London Underground network, providing interchanges with nine existing lines as well as the National Rail and Docklands Light Railway networks.Crossrail began construction of enabling works in May 2009 and launched the first of eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in May 2012. 42km of major tunneling work was completed in May 2015, and included 11km of sprayed concrete lined tunnels at the five mined stations (Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel) in addition to the bored tunnel sections. The remaining three sub-surface stations at Paddington, Canary Wharf and Woolwich were constructed as large open boxes prior to the TBMs passing through. Crossrail, Ltd. is a special purpose company formed by the project’s joint sponsors, Transport for London and the Department for Transport, to manage design, construction and commissioning of the project. In 2009, Crossrail engaged Bechtel Ltd. as its delivery partner and a joint venture, Transcend (comprised of CH2M, AECOM and the Nichols Group), as its programme partner. The project is being managed by an integrated programme management team which is staffed by Crossrail and its partners. The railway, when opened, will be operated by Rail for London. With tunneling completed in accordance with the project’s master control schedule, the new railway is scheduled to commence dynamic testing in late 2017, with a phased opening of the tunneled sections and stations through Central London in 2018."

Application of depositional analysis concepts is becoming an ever-increasingly more important and more useable tool in exploration and development of coals in the Appalachian basin. Over the past decade, a rather large number of studies, papers, and publications have addressed various aspects of depositional environments of coals and, to some extent, applications to development. As would be expected as regards a subject so complex as Pennsylvanian sedimentation in the Appalachian basin, certain academic studies have produced conclusions at variance in some aspects to those of other studies. Overall, however, there has been a building- block progression and general refinement with time of understanding of the depositional settings and other factors controlling Appalachian coal distribution, quality, and other minability parameters. Most attempts to explain coal seam characteristics have revolved around a basic deltaic model. Some have attributed certain seam attributes to upper delta plain deposition, other attributes to transitional-lower delta plain settings, and yet others to lower delta plain environments, and so on. While these approaches have provided valuable insight into some general coal characteristics, they are somewhat incomplete and are, in a sense, too broad for specific mine-scale applications. Further, it is apparent that in order for widespread peat accumulation to occur, there must be a drastic decrease in the energy of the depositional system and amount of sediment being brought in, compared to the active deltaic and coastal processes responsible for deposition of the large volume of clastic sediments that dominate the Pennsylvanian system of the Appalachians. Consideration of this fact implies that peats (coals) may not necessarily reflect depositional settings that are directly coincident with those associated with adjacent rocks. Cecil and Englund (1985) address this point, and quite correctly state that "the primary controls on major stages of peat formation are allocyclic processes involving paleoclimate, eustatic changes in sea level, and tectonics." While this statement is inarguable, it does not negate the importance and usefulness of depositional analysis in predicting reserve characteristics that may impact mining and marketability.

Since its development, the functional performance equation for ball milling (McIvor, 1988) has facilitated a new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the functional performance mill grinding rate at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining selection rate and breakage size distribution functions. The much simpler ball mill model has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from functional performance analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/ material provider and circuit designer.

"The Subtropolis room-and-pillar mine extracts the Vanport Limestone (Allegheny Formation, Pennsylvanian System) near Petersburg, Ohio. Strata instability problems associated with excessive concentrations of lateral stress caused the mine operator to implement a change in layout design. This mining method has been identified as a stress control layout, which has been used by other underground stone mines in the past with varying degrees of success. Practical experience has shown that entry headings advance in the direction of the principal lateral stress, producing lower stress concentrations with better mining conditions. It is important to minimize stress concentrations along the mining front, so an arrow-shaped advance is recommended. This technique advances more developments (headings) in a “good” direction and reduces developments (crosscuts) in a “bad” direction. As is expected, the stress control layout enhances the potential for shear failures in crosscuts. It is, therefore, important to focus crosscut engineering interventions that either: (a) lower stress concentrations (for example, an arched roof) or (b) enhance strength of the strata containing the shears (for example, rock reinforcement). This study focuses on observing strata conditions on a regular basis and monitoring the response of this strata to changing geologic and mining conditions through 3D Dynamic LiDAR scans.INTRODUCTIONProject AimsThe Subtropolis Mine is extracting the Vanport Limestone in northeastern Ohio. Since the start of mining in 2006, ground conditions have been significantly affected by excessive lateral stress condition. In some other mining districts with this hazard, certain mine layouts have been shown to lessen the potential for unstable ground conditions. The term “lessen” is used to state the realization that stress concentrations are not eliminated but instead occur in less frequency and intensity, and their locations can be projected.The stress-control mine layout, specifically for large-opening room-and-pillar stone mines, naturally evolved at mines suffering from excessive lateral stress problems. These mines will typically experiment with methods to mitigate adverse impacts, thus developing best practices for their conditions. These practices have evolved into a basic framework for the stress control mine layout. For example, Jack Parker was able to write about personal experiences at the White Pine Mine in Michigan (Parker, 1966, 1973). Various researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have studied the effectiveness of stress-control mine layouts over a wide range of geologic conditions (Emery, 1964; Mark and Mucho, 1994; Iannacchione et al., 2003). While the stress control layout design approach has proven successful in many categories, it can be difficult to implement. For example, excessive stress conditions in crosscuts can put the ground control focused intervention at odds with ventilation and haulage constraints, thus limiting optimal crosscut size, shape, and location. Therefore, more information on the effectiveness of this approach is needed."

The Bond Work Index became a universal standard, and is the most widely used measurement tool for comminution energy consumption. This biography is the story of his lifetime of study, work experiences, experimentation, analyses and findings. His numerous published writings are reviewed. His legacy is one of comminution process engineering that will be used in perpetuity.

The distribution of phosphate in Pliocene-Miocene deposits of the Southeastern United States was controlled by the prevailing geologic setting. For each basin a unique set of conditions in terms of relationship of land mass to shelf, depositional environment and seawater composition, and movement controlled phosphate distribution. Concentration sufficient to recognize the deposits as a resource occurred in lagoons or shallow neritic zones, with clastics and carbonates diluting the section basinward. Each deposit within a basin displays similar metallurgy and lithology, notwithstanding post-depositional alteration.

? A helper stands beside a continuous miner as the operator is at the controls. The operator means to push the stop button but hits the drum rotation start button by mistake. The drum begins to turn and the bits catch the helper's clothing. He is thrown violently to the ground and suffers multiple contusions. ? A farmer's wife helplessly watches her husband drawn into the claws of farm machinery while she frantically and unsucessfully searches for the control to stop the machine. ? A mechanic on the night shift replaces plugs in the lubrication systems of all three engines of an airliner following routine maintenance. In doing so', he fails to notice that "0" ring seals have not been mounted on the plugs. A few hours later, as the fully loaded airliner is cruising high over the ocean, oil pressure on one engine drops precipitously. The pilots quickly shut down the engine and turn for home. Almost immediately, the two remaining engines lose their oil and fail.

Four companies ? H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Inc., Imerys, Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp. ? mined ball clay in four states in 2013. On the basis of preliminary data, production was 1 Mt (1.1 million st) with an estimated value of $47 million. Production increased by 3 percent in tonnage from 973 kt (1.1 million st) with a value of $45.1 million in 2012. Tennessee was the leading producer accounting for 64 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 67 percent of total ball clay production was airfloat, 22 percent was crude or shredded and 11 percent was water-slurried.
