Several wall rock porphyry or pyrometascmatic copper deposits occur within the metamorphosed Paleozoic formations along the northern and eastern flanks of the Little Dragoon Mountains. Rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent occur in the area. The Tertiary age Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded the sedimentary section in the eastern half of the range metamorphosing the Paleozoic carbonate units to tactites composed of garnet, diopside, and tremolite. Copper, zinc, and molybdenum minerals deposited in sites which are structurally controlled and stratigraphically favorable. Because the deposits are covered by alluvium, the information on structure, alteration, and mineralization is based upon a study of the diamond drilling programs. The mineralized district can be divided into four areas: 1) The Johnson Camp copper-zinc deposits; 2) The Dragoon copper deposit; 3) The I-10 copper-molybdenum deposit; 4) The Strong & Harris copper-zinc deposit. On the southwest end of the range beneath alluvial cover, the Cretaceous Bisbee Group was thrust over Precambrian and Paleozoic formations. The Tertiary Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded and metamorphosed them. In the upper plate, the Cretaceous sediments near the intrusive were metamorphosed to metaquartzite and andalusite and sillimanite schists. In the lower plate the Martin and Horquilla formations were marbleized. The lower Abrigo was metamorphosed to epidote rich calc-silicate tactites and biotite hornfels. A composite geologic cross section, based upon diamond drilling,, through the Dragoon copper deposit is shown in Fig. 1. The geologic events which formed this deposit are: 1. A faulted section of Precambrian Pioneer formation and diabase and Cambrian Bolsa and Abrigo formations was thrust over Pennsylvanian Horquilla formation. The recognition of perlite as a distinct volcanic glass, and of the arcuate fractures that often characterize these natural glasses, dates back at least to the late 19th century and perhaps into the 18th century (Howell, 1974). Some authors suggest that recognition of perlite dates considerably further into antiquity, perhaps to the 3rd century BC (Caley and Richards, 1956). Most recent definitions identify perlite by the presence of vit¬reous, pearly luster and by the presence of characteristic concentric or arcuate perlitic fractures. As discussed more fully below, arcuate fractures in perlite need not be megascopic. The textures of perlite which commonly occur in deposits range from dense to highly vesiculated to pumice-like. Thus, the classical definition of perlite is descriptively restrictive compared to the natural range of textures and neglects to address the issues of genetic origin and geologic occurrence. In spite of the petrological usage of the term perlite, the in¬troduction of expanded perlite aggregate into industrial markets caused the term to be applied as well to the lightweight, cellular aggregate that is produced through the rapid thermal expansion of milled perlite ore. Perlite is distinguished petrologically from other natural glasses by a silicic or rhyolitic composition by the presence of 2 to 5 wt% total chemical water held within the glass structure and often by the presence of pearly luster and onionskin-like perlitic fractures. Worldwide, occurrences are associated with Tertiary through early to middle Quaternary volcanics and with the glassy portions of silicic domes and flows, with vitric tephra, with the glassy chill margins of dikes and sills, and with the glassy portions of welded ash flow tuffs. Less commonly, perlite is reported in association with the glassy portions of volcanic plugs and lacco¬liths. The perlite carapaces that partially or fully comprise extru¬sive domes and flows are often thick and areally extensive, and thus provide commercially attractive targets for low cost open pit mining. Perlite tuffs and tephras are also important commercial sources. Mining costs are minimized by open pit quarrying and by either bulldozer ripping or blasting. Crushing and sizing facilities are generally close to the pits. Due to the low weight and large volume of expanded perlite, unexpanded perlite that has been crushed and sized is usually shipped nationwide directly to local markets where it is expanded and processed for distribution to end users. The vast majority of international trade is in unexpanded perlite. In the United States, the evolution of the expanded perlite industry can be traced to the late 1930s and early 1940s when expanded perlite aggregate was introduced into gypsum plaster and concrete markets as a substitute for vermiculite (Schundler, Jr., oral communication, 1991) and was promoted for use in a much broader spectrum of products (Howell, 1974). By the early 1950s, end user markets were well established and small expanders were numerous east of the Mississippi River. Today, mining and expan¬sion is undertaken throughout the world. Worldwide production of perlite is dominated by the former Soviet republics, the United States, and Greece. Total worldwide production of processed perlite during 1990 is estimated at roughly 1 778 000 tons (Davis, 1991). The physical properties of expanded perlite that give this prod¬uct unique commercial value include: low bulk density, chemical inertness, high insulating ability, nonflammability and fire resis¬tance, and its ability to retain water. These and other physical properties give expanded perlite value in such uses as: lightweight acoustical and thermal insulating aggregate; component in plaster, insulating cements and lightweight concrete; loose fill insulation; as aggregate in horticultural applications; and in milled form as filter aid. In the United States and Europe, the largest end use is within building construction products.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common water pollution problem on active and abandoned coal mine sites in the eastern United States. AMD forms when surface mining brings unweathered pyrite-containing rocks to the surface or when deep mining allows oxygen to contact buried pyritic strata. In the absence of neutralizing compounds, the drainage that results can be extremely acidic and contaminated with dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfate. Drainages with pH < 3.0 and concentrations of sulfate greater than 1,000 mg/L, iron greater than 50 mg/L, and manganese greater than 10 mg/L are common. Where water flows through alkaline materials (such as limestone) before surfacing, the drainage is less acidic and occasionally circumneutral, but it can still contain high concentrations of sulfate and metals. Current water quality standards in the United States require that mine discharges have a pH between 6 and 9, total iron concentration less than 3.0 mg/L, and manganese less than 2.0 mg/L. At thousands of active and inactive mine sites, drainage does not meet these standards and is being treated before discharge by the mining company. At thousands of other sites, which were abandoned prior to the enactment of water pollution laws or were operated by companies that have gone bankrupt, untreated AMD is polluting receiving water systems. The standard mine drainage treatment system involves the addition of a1 kal ine chemicals to the water, which raises the pH and cause metals to precipitate in a settling pond. These systems are expensive, often costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for chemicals, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the metal- laden sludge. Because the drainage on many sites will likely be contaminated for decades, there is financial incentive to find alternative water treatment systems. In the last five years, many mining companies and engineering firms have experimented with the construction of wetland treatment systems. Very few of the several hundred wetland systems that have been built are performing well enough to justify total abandonment of chemical treatment. Nonetheless, systems continue to be built because the mining companies have found that wetlands can reduce their AMD treatment costs. It is also their hope that further research and development will eventually result in systems that will completely rep1 ace chemical treatment and offer long term performance at minimal cost. The Bureau of Mines has been actively involved, from a research perspective, with this approach to AMD treatment since its inception. In this paper, the status of constructed wetland technology is discussed with respect to the construction and performance of systems, chemical and biological processes that affect AMD chemistry within constructed wetlands, and the future of this technology as perceived by the Bureau of Mines. ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS The constructed wetland concept has its roots in observations of natural Sphaqnum peat wetlands that received acid mine drainage and, instead of being adversely affected, appeared to cause an amelioration of the polluted water (Huntsman et al. 1978; Wieder and Lang 1982). These observations instigated the idea that wet1 and systems might be used for the intentional treatment of mine drainage. Because the discharge of AMD into a natural wetland is prohibited in the U.S. by several laws, it has been necessary to construct wetlands which act solely as water treatment systems. Initially, most wetland research and construction efforts mimicked the original observations by utilizing Sphaqnum moss and peat. Despite promising laboratory results (Kleinmann et al. 1983; Tarleton et al. 1984; Burris et al. 1984; Gerber et al. 1985), virtually all field tests of Sphasnum-dominated constructed wetlands failed to provide sufficient water treatment for more than several months. The significance of surface settlement over soft ground tunnels is well recognized. Cracked buildings, streets transformed into lakes, broken utility lines, to underpin or not to underpin--all are familiar problems. The basic causes of surface settlement are recognized. Possibly the most common and troublesome cause is "lost ground" during construction. Lost ground refers to removal of a larger volume of ground (Ve) than is eventually occupied by the final tunnel structure (Vt). A number of sources of lost ground in shield tunneling have been identified, as illustrated in Fig. 1. These include 1) face loss, 2) overcutting loss, 3) annular tail void loss, and 4) loss through the lining. The ground generally does not stand unsupported around the completed tunnel lining as illustrated in Fig. 1, but moves in to fill the lost volume, resulting in subsidence of the overlying ground surface as shown. As suggested in Fig. 1, lost ground and surface settlement associated with overcutting and the annular tail void tend to occur systematically along the tunnel length. This "systematic" lost volume is "limited" in the sense that it is restricted to an upper limit determined by the shield and lining geometry. Partially controlled face loss may sometimes contribute to this systematic loss. This lost volume is commonly a few percent of the nominal tunnel volume. The resulting surface settlement over the tunnel is commonly in the range of a few inches or less and develops over a period of hours to days. Although they may have a significant impact on surface facilities, systematic ground loss and settlement frequently have little adverse effect on tunneling progress.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km (4.4 miles) of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A171, the Wilshire/Alvarado Line, involves tunnel construction beneath 7th/Street from the 7th/Flower Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. The project consists of the excavation and lininig of 3000 m (9900 ft) of twin-bore, 6.7 m (22 ft) excavated diameter, 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnels. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The majority of the excavation passed through weak siltstone/ claystone bedrock; although, portions of each tunnel approaching the 7th/Flower Station passed through fine-grained alluvium. Both tunnels were excavated with a digger shield. The project also included the excavation and lining of 6 cross passages, 2 communication rooms and a sump, all at tunnel grade between the two bores. A program of geotechnical instrumentation and building monitoring was performed to detect and document the response of the ground and adjacent structures and facilities to tunnel excavation. The instrumentation program was also intended to provide information that would permit implementation of remedial measures, when and as required, to prevent damage to structures, facilities and utilities along the tunnel alignment. Work done by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines research contract has developed methods to increase significantly the amount of fresh air that reaches the front of a continuous-mining machine. The emphasis was on removing methane build- ups that occur at the cutterhead. Using a full-scale plywood mockup of a coal mine working face area, the study showed that in many instances only about 20 pct of the fresh air heading towards an exhaust brattice or tubing actually gets to within 1 ft (0.3m) of the face. The key to providing more air at the face is to enhance and move forward the natural airflow pattern. This change in the natural airflow pattern can be accomplished by taking advantage of the air-moving abilities of the conventional water spray. It was discovered that if all the water sprays on the machine were realigned, then ventilation efficiencies of 70 pct or more were achieved regularly. This meant that if 9,000 cfm (4.2 m3/s) was entering the brattice, at least 6,300 cfm (3.0 m3/s) of this was reaching to within 1 ft (0.3m) of the face. This water spray realignment consists of placing a few nozzles on the side of the machine opposite the curtain and also tilting the front sprays slightly towards the curtain side. Recently, two underground tests and two additional independent laboratory tests of the water "Spray Fan" have been completed. In general, they have confirmed the performance of the Spray Fan system, but they also have provided useful information as to its difficulties and limitations.

"In today’s challenging mining environment the “Big Picture” (Caterpillar, 2013) approach to mining is often neglected. With haulage costs approaching up to 45 % of the overall mining costs, all too often the load-haul-dump- return cycle is not investigated in its completeness. This paper will discuss the aspects of taking the time to observe an operation from the “Big Picture” approach. In today’s mining business miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in the past decade. The endless human resource, safety, environmental, cost control issues and performance initiatives, detracts from precious time that may have been dedicated to examining the day to day operation. Having examined numerous mining operations over the past several years, one common denominator is lack of time to properly observe operating practices in the field and recognize both positive and negative observations. The old fashioned vocation of observing the operation to assess the haulage, loading and maintenance processes to adjust, maximize or enhance operations have sometimes vanished. Four areas to be discussed in this paper: (1) Look at the “Big Picture”(Caterpillar, 2013), (2) Use common sense, (3) Areas identified for biggest improvements in the operations, (4) Observation of small details for big impacts to lower cost per ton and increased production. The objective of this paper is to provide low cost recommendations to lower cost per ton and increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all or the “rookie” on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible. So why is it so difficult to execute this task? Shouldn’t supervisors just have to man the equipment, tell operators to have a safe day and tally up the numbers at the end of the shift? And let the technology system do the rest? So what could go wrong? Lots. Mining companies seek help from consultants, training departments, performance reporting systems and an arsenal of resources. Armed with all this information, the supervisors just hop in the pick-up and tell the shovel operator to speed up. Sounds simple enough. When the improvements don’t happen, what could have gone wrong? It comes down to people, the simple things that were not executed over the months previously and as a result today the mines performance is not where it should be. A mine is built by people. Managers who have the vision to develop the ore body in a manner that follows sound engineering practices. The infrastructure to mill the ore and support the equipment needed to move the material. Along the way equipment is procured and operators trained to run the gear. Engineers and geologists set up the design, the material movement, and haulage routes. Sounds easy to this point. So, why mine after mine is there this constant struggle to move more with less and get the costs down? Understanding how to make “Great Miners” out of these people is critical to lowering your cost per ton."

With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. INTRODUCTION Ever since miners were faced with the task of moving ore, some form of scraper has been in use. At first, men and beasts of burden supplied the power to move the scraper, and later, machines were developed for this purpose. In the early 1900s, a few mining properties used small pneumatic single-drum winches to pull loaded scrapers to a raise or ore pocket, and the empty scraper then was dragged back to the muck pile by a miner, as shown in Fig. 1. Just prior to 1920, an improvement was introduced, using two single-drum hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 2, the second hoist was used to return the empty scraper to the muck pile. However, this arrangement still re¬quired two men, one operating each hoist. The next developmental step was to eliminate the second man by locating the hoists side-by-side and using one man to control both hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 3, this involved the use of a tail rope over a sheave to pull the scraper back. The greatest progress in development and the great¬est increase in the use of slusher haulers occurred between 1920 and 1930. In 1921, the Sullivan Machinery Co. designed and built the first two-drum scraper oper¬ating on the principle illustrated by Fig. 4. It was powered by a 4.5-kW (6-hp) Turbinair(r) motor and would pull a 450-kg (1000-1b) load at 0.61 m/s (120 fpm). In 1922, this unit was shipped to the Verona Mining Co. of Caspian, MI, and it experienced immediate success in the Lake Superior iron ore district. Since the two-drum slusher was much less expensive and more efficient than hand mucking, the Lake Superior mines were saved from financial disaster when iron-ore prices fell 25% between 1923 and 1925. Immediately there¬after, a demand developed for slushers that would oper¬ate with electric power, which was considerably cheaper than compressed-air power. In 1923, the Sullivan Machinery Co. responded with the first electric-powered double-drum hoist. During subsequent years, design improvements in¬cluded separate tail-drum gearing to increase the tail¬drum speed, as welt as a number of safety features such as rope guides. One result of these improvements and their utilization by the Michigan iron mines was an in¬crease of 100% in the tons of ore per miner per day in those mines between 1924 and 1929. Since the two-drum slusher was capable only of straight-line mucking, it was not a practical machine for use in open stopes. In 1929, the Sullivan Machinery Co. introduced the first three-drum slusher. As illustrated by Fig. 5, two tail drums and one hauling drum were provided. A tail sheave could be placed at each side of the stope, and the ore then could be loaded and hauled to a central point from the entire width of the stope. During the 1930s, progressively larger slushers were demanded. By 1940, two- and three-drum units were available with motor power as high as 45 kW (60 hp), and slusher power continued to increase after 1940. Be¬tween 1951 and 1952, Joy Manufacturing Co. designed a 112-kW (150-hp) two-drum Blusher for the Climax Molydenum Co. Although there has been no demand for a slusher more powerful than this, 150- to 225-kW (200- to 300-hp) slushers are quite feasible at the pres¬ent time. During the last 30 years, many slusher improvements have been made to the operating life, operational safety, and ease of operation and maintenance. Increased tail-drum speeds have decreased overall scraping times. Rope guards, totally enclosed drums, and operator shields have reduced the hazards of injury due to wire¬rope breakage. Improvements in lubrication have made the slushers relatively maintenance-free, with long operating lives. The introduction of spring-actuated drag brakes prevented uncontrolled unreeling of dis¬engaged drums, allowing the development of practical remote-control slusher operation. Remote control now is available in a choice of all-air, all-electric, or air¬electric slushers. Introduction Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock-fragmentation mechanism of continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting-drum rotational speed. This paper presents a discussion of the effects of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation. The removal of rock ridges/walls between adjacent grooves is analyzed with three hits mounted simultaneously on the cutting head, while the bit tip angle was varied from 600 to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 25.4 to 50.8 mm (1 to 2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dusts generated during the course of the experiments were analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism of continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. A review of the literature revealed that a considerable amount of research has been carried out on rockcutting processes. Many authors agree that the mechanical cutting efficiencies of mining machines (e.g., continuous miners, shearers and road headers) are affected by a host of parameters. Some of these parameters are machine controlled, some are operator controlled, while others are uncontrollable. Efforts were focused on understanding the influence of parameters such as bit spacing, cutting depth, attack angle, bit type, drum speed, bit geometry (i.e., tip size, shape and tip angle) and rock type on the cutting process efficiency in terms of specific energy consumption and respirable dust generation (Strehig?? et al., 1975, Hanson et al., 1979, Khair et al., 1989). Roepke et al. (1976) in an attempt to study the dust and energy generated during coal cutting using point attack bits found that the dust and the specific energy consumed both decrease as the depth of cut increases. The four fundamental stages of dust generation luring rock fragmentation are identified by Zipf and Bieniawski (1989). Coal breakage by various types of wedges was assessed by Evans and Pomeroy (1966) in an extensive experimental study on British coals. Yet the industry today requires further attention and guidance to optimize the energy consumption and dust generation during the rockbreakage process. This paper attempts to give a better understanding of the influence of some of the parameters listed above and focuses on further improvement in the rock-cutting process. The specific energy consumed for different types of bits used and the respirable dust generated are analyzed in the context of the variation of a few other parameters. Laboratory investigation The experiments were performed in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories located at West Virginia University. A rock-cutting simulator designed and fabricated by Khair (1984) was utilized for this purpose. The details of this machine are available in the literature (see Khair 1984). For this study, a series of preliminary experiments was carried out to determine the optimum cutting frame advance speed. This was intended to facilitate a maximum cut depth of 31.75 mm (1.25 in.) at an advance rate of 0.525 mm/s (0.0207 ips) for all types of bits being used and various bit spacings being considered. To look into the cutting-process efficiency of a continuous miner in the laboratory, several parameters of influence are being considered. Besides the bit-geometry parameters, machine- and operator-controlled parameters, such as spacing of bits on the cutting head, the cutting head rotational speed and the total cutting depth during an experiment, are varied. At the time this paper was written, only part of the completed experiments were ana¬lyzed, and a number of experiments were still being carried out following an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental plan to assess the effect of all of the above¬mentioned parameters on the cutting efficiency in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. Three different types of tip angles, namely, 60°, 75° and 90°, and two different tip sizes, namely, diameters of 7.94 and 24.61 mm (0.313 and 0.969 in.), were used. At

INTRODUCTION Shaft sinking represents a relatively small proportion of the activities involved in mine development. Because of this limited utilization, shaft sinking has been one of the most difficult functions to mechanize. Although shaft machines (muckers) were introduced more than 30 years ago, the first machines were low-capacity units, and machines of this type did not gain wide acceptance by the mining industry until the late 1950s. However, the increasing depth of underground mines and the es¬calating costs of labor have increased the benefits obtain¬able from high-speed shaft sinking. The result has been a growing need for high-capacity shaft machines. Most of the machines available at the present time have been developed by modifying existing equipment to increase the payload capacity and performance. AVAILABLE SHAFT MACHINES In general, shaft machines may be classified accord¬ing to the types of digging mechanisms and the mecha¬nisms of operation. The available digging mechanisms include clamshells, cactus grabs, front-end buckets, and backhoes. The mechanisms of operation can be classified as either pneumatic or hydraulic. Selection Criteria For efficient operation, the primary consideration in selecting a shaft machine is its capacity. The minimum capacity of the machine should match the capacity of the hoisting system at the ultimate depth of the shaft. In many cases, two machines may be needed to obtain a sufficient mucking capacity. The shaft dimensions and configuration often dictate the type of machine that may be utilized; for example, an overshot loader does not work well in a circular shaft that has a diameter of less than 5.5 m (18 ft). Similarly, a single Cryderman mucker is not suitable for a large-diameter shaft, nor is it applicable where very high sinking buckets are to be used. Other factors for consideration include the degree of material fragmentation, the abrasiveness of the rock, and the amount of ground water that is inter¬sected. Machine Descriptions Riddell Mucker: The Riddell mucker, illustrated in Fig. 1, was first introduced in 1948. This is one of the most common shaft machines in the medium-capacity range. The Riddell mucker consists of a hoisting and traveling mechanism that operates a clamshell suspended on cables. The early machines operated with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) clamshell and had an hourly capacity of approximately 27 t (30 st). This type of shaft machine has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Essentially, the Riddell mucker consists of standard components, such as the pneumatic tugger hoists that operate the clamshell. The carriage is suspended on rails that also serve as the blasting set, located immediately below the shaft timbers. To effectively position the clam¬shell in the shaft, the operator controls the carriage travel by means of wheels that are driven by a pneu¬matic motor. The Riddell mucker most commonly is used in rec¬tangular timbered shafts. However, some units have been installed with circular rails, allowing them to work in circular concrete-lined shafts. A popular practice with many Riddell muckers is to increase the capacity through the use of larger clamshells, often ranging up to 0.76 m3 (1.0 cu yd), in conjunction with more powerful tugger hoists. In some large rectangular shafts, two Riddell units have been used side by side to achieve a sufficient capacity. Cryderman Mucker: The Cryderman mucker, illus¬trated in Fig. 2, is another common shaft machine in the low- to medium-capacity range. Developed in the early 1950s, it also has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Equipped with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) bucket, the Cryderman mucker has an hourly capacity of approximately 23 t (25 st). The Cryderman mucker is operated entirely by means of pneumatic cylinders and a pneumatic telescopic boom. The boom is suspended from a sectional frame¬work that is usually located at one end of the shaft. RADON SOURCES AND CONTROL MEASURES IN THE MINING ENVIRONMENT Most of the contamination of the mine atmosphere by radon 222 is due to radon emanating from solid or fractured ore surfaces of walls, roof and floor. Also radon gas emanates from broken ore either from storage in backfilled mined-out areas as applied in e.g. shrinkage stopping methods or from ore spillage along intake airways mainly due to the use of trackless haulage. To a lesser extent water itself can represent an additional source of radon, which emanates into air from open drainage ditches or seepages along intake airways. The contribution from water can be controlled effectively by isolating the water from the primary intake air system, e.g. by diverting the water through pipes and/or sealing of seepages by grouting. However, control of radon emanating from rock surfaces creates a major technical problem with significant impact on the economic aspects of mining operations, if adequate radiological conditions must be maintained. Basically this can be achieved by suppressing the emanation process itself, confining already emanated radon or by removal of radon from the mine atmosphere. Extensive research has been carried out on the rate of radon emanation as a function of barometric pressure changes (Pohl-Rüling and Pohl, 1969). It could be shown that the radon supply consists of a permanent and variable component. The former results from the surface of the rock and depends mainly on the emanating fraction of its radium 226 content; the latter originates from within the rocks and is a function of the suction effect of decreasing barometric pressure, rock porosity and fissures. The practical application of this barometric pump effect for depressing the rate of radon emanation, e.g. by pressurizing the mine atmosphere, is limited due to high costs for providing a sink for absorption of radon and air as well as lack of permeability in most uranium ore bodies (Schroeder et al., 1966). Mine air cleaning by removal of radon can be achieved with the use of cryogenic methods, chemical removal, adsorption into charcoal beds, use of a gas centrifuge or general ventilation techniques. Technical problems have so far prevented the application of any of these methods other than ventilation. It is common practice to use the age-of-air concept, i.e. fresh air is delivered to the worker as directly as possible and removed quickly afterwards thereby maintaining the air "young". Engineering principles for quantity distribution of air through underground working areas are straightforward for general mining situations where radon constitutes an environmental contamination problem. However, in cases of high uranium ore content this concept may result in high costs with regard to installation and energy requirements for effecting both frequent air changes as well as sufficient heating of the air in cold seasons. Taking into account that the investment in ventilation systems is a major cofactor for the overall ore production costs this can be a limiting and decisive component in the assessment of the economic feasibility of specific mining operations and mineral reserves in general. Effective control of the radon flux from the rock surface prevents the initial contamination of the mine air with radon directly at the source. A radon diffusion barrier for practical application in mining requirements should fulfill the following requirements: - reduction of radon emanation rate by at least an order of magnitude - high mechanical strength - ease of sealant application onto surface to be coated - water resistant - low fire hazard - resistant to temperature changes encountered in mines - high cost efficiency in relation to exposure reduction achieved (direct and indirect costs) - low degree of maintenance. In the past several materials have been tested as sealants for controlling the emanation of radon from surfaces of rock and building materials. Epoxy paints reduce radon emanation rate only by a factor of 2 to 6 (Auxier et al., 1974; Eichholz et al., 1980; Keith Consulting Engineers, 1980). Although it is possible to prevent the escape of more than 99 % of the radon to the environment with gel seals over 80 mm thick (Bedrosian et al., 1974), practical applicability is very limited. Multilayer coatings of epoxy resins with various additives require meticulous preparation and flawless application of seamless four-layer coatings in four days to impede radon diffusion (Culot et al., 1976), otherwise results from this method have not been totally satisfactory (Leung, 1978). Aluminium foil laminated with polyethylene and paper on each side is under test as radon barrier but results are not available yet (Ericson, 1980). However, this method has the inherent disadvantage that possible malfunctioning electrical installations can cause fire or electrical shock through the sealant. Polyurethane foam coatings have been used on stoppings as very effective sealants. It does, however, represent a potential danger of spontaneous ignition and it is expensive (Rock, 1975). Thus, there is still need for a material which has similar properties as outlined above. In the following results are reported from investigations on the suitability of various materials as radon diffusion barriers.

INTRODUCTION In any mining operation all possible steps should be taken to increase efficiency. One area for improvement is mine planning and design, particularly in the area of equipment selection for room-and-pillar systems. Be- cause of the availability of a wide variety of face machines, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, this choice must be made on the basis of quantitative facts and forecasts related to the mining application. The purpose of this section is to develop and analyze the details of the mining process. Some specific areas studied include the relationship of system design to productivity, suboptimization as a result of equipment changes, and measurement of system performance. The plan of work leading to a quantitative description of these study areas is based on the growing interest in total system design using simulation as an analytical method (Manula, 1963). CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION OPERATIONS FROM ROOM-AND-PILLAR SECTIONS For a given mining method, raw production in a given section of a mine is primarily dependent upon the coal seam thickness, roof and floor conditions, methane emission, the mining methods, and the man-machine element. Average section production varies from 300 to 800 st per shift for conventional and continuous mining in high seams and from less than 100 to 300 st per shift in low seams. Since the reject varies from 0 to 40%, these figures must be decreased by the appropriate percentage to reflect the amount of clean coal mined. Personnel requirements per production section per shift for the various methods are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Seven critical independent variables which determine production can be identified and categorized (Suboleski, 1978) : Seam Height The five categories are as follows: less than 36 in.;. 36 to 55 in.; 55 to 100 in.; 100 to 180 in.; and greater than 180 in. Floor Quality Floor quality ranges from : Excellent: Smooth, hard, grades less than 1 to 1 % % , and dry. Good: Smooth, soft but dry, with grades less than 3 % . The floor will deteriorate, but cautious operation can prevent it. There may possibly be heaving at some later time. Fair. Soft and damp. There is occasional interference with equipment operation; requires the use of four-wheel drive shuttle cars; ruts with regular use, and may have adverse grades of 5 to 7%. This may be coupled with slippery bottom and/or occasional steep rolls. Poor: Soft and wet. Requires blocking of the bottom to support equipment. There are frequent steep rolls and grades in excess of 7%. Roof Quality Roof quality ranges from : Excellent: Men are able to work under the unsupported top during the initial production cycle if legally permitted. Good: The roof is bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern with short bolts (442 in.) or <seam height if the seam >42 in., or requires posting with no bolts on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern. There are no falls. Average: The roof is normally bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern, but with long bolts (>seam height or >6 ft.). There are infrequent minor falls or there may be an excellent roof which is difficult to drill. Fair: This type often requires spot bolting in addition to the regular pattern or bolting with planks. The roof conditions require shorter than planned cuts, or narrow cuts. Poor: This type requires bolts plus crossbars and posts, or installation of yielding supports or truss-type support. It is almost certain to fall if this is not done. Methane Liberation This ranges from none detected to low (no buildup at the face, even with minimum ventilation requirements) to moderate (the curtains must be extremely tight and tubing close to the face or methane will build up to 1 % during the loading of the car) to high (methane will build up to 170 if the miner is operated at the normal rate, even with proper ventilation). Hardness of Coal Coal hardness falls into the following categories: Soft: Soft coal is easily cut by a continuous miner. A plow could be used by longwall. Average: Coal of average hardness could be easily cut by a miner, and a shearer would be used in the longwall. Moderate: Moderately hard coal causes difficult cut-

Introduction Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, numerous developments have taken place in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991). Mesh selection methods A procedure for mine ventilation network solution based on mesh equations typically consists of two steps: • the mesh selection step and • the network solution step. The mesh selection step establishes a set of independent equations to solve the network. The resulting equations are nonlinear. One method of solving nonlinear equations is to linearize the equations and iteratively solve these linear equations. The four analysis methods previously discussed in this paper use this approach. The linear equations required for solution can be written in matrix form as: P•dQ = dF (1) where P is the pseudo-resistance matrix, Q is the quantity matrix, and F is the Jacobian matrix (Kim and Mutmansky, 1991). The efficiency of the solution method depends on the characteristics of the P matrix, which in turn depend on the method of selecting meshes. To understand the impacts of the mesh selection methods on the efficiency of the ventilation network analysis procedures, the characteristics of the P matrix must be understood first. The diagonal elements of the P matrix, m in number, are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches contained in the m meshes necessary for solution. The off-diagonal elements are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two meshes. For example, P12 (first row, second column element of the P matrix) is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches common to mesh 1 and mesh 2. When solving the system of equations expressed in Eq. (1), three of the iterative procedures (the Newton-Raphson, the linear theory and the second-order approximation methods) use the direct factorization method (Burden and Faires, 1985) on the P matrix. When the direct factorization method is used, the computational efficiency is enhanced by larger diagonal elements and a sparser P matrix. Generally, the sparsity of the P matrix is more important than the size of the diagonal elements. There is no known mathematical method of predicting the efficiency of these procedures, but heuristic methods can be used to study the efficiency. The Hardy Cross algorithm applies the Gauss-Seidel method of splitting the P matrix and applies the Newton-Raphson procedure. The efficiency of the Hardy Cross method depends on the spectral radius of the matrix[[D-L]-1U], where D is the diagonal, L is the lower triangle and U is the upper triangle of the P matrix for the Newton-Raphson method (Ortega, 1972). The smaller the value of the spectral radius, the faster the convergence. As with the other three methods, larger diagonal elements and a sparser matrix aid in faster convergence. With the Hardy Cross method, however, the size of the diagonal elements is more important than the sparsity of the matrix. Remembering that each of the diagonal elements of the P matrix is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches in a mesh and that each off-diagonal element is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two different meshes, the following strategies can be used: • Avoid having branches with larger resistance values shared by multiple meshes. This increases the size of the diagonal elements and reduces the chance of off-diagonal elements being large.

INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and made possible through the cooperation of many mining companies in the US and foreign countries. The data presented have been obtained from papers previously published by the Bureau dealing with indi¬vidual mines, from the technical press, and from infor¬mation furnished by the mining companies. DEFINITIONS Top Slicing The term top slicing is commonly applied to that method of mining in which the ore is extracted by a series of timbered slices, beginning at the capping; the slice is caved, bringing down the capping to the floor of the slice; the succeeding lower slices are mined up to the overlying mat or gob, consisting of an accumulation of timber from the upper slices and broken capping, which follows the mining progressively downward (Fig. 1). The term has also come to be applied to the mining of ore bodies only one slice thick, by a series of tim¬bered slices one beside the other. The timbers are blasted out, bringing the capping down to the floor, suc¬ceeding slices being driven alongside those already caved (Fig. 2). In USBM classifications of mining methods, top slic¬ing has been placed under the heading caved stopes. The method differs fundamentally, however, from the cav¬ing methods of mining in which the breaking of the ore itself is accomplished by caving action induced by undercutting. In top slicing the ore is broken by the ordinary methods of drilling and blasting, and only the capping is broken up by caving. Main Levels or Haulage Levels Main or haulage levels are the main extraction levels on which the ore is hauled to the shaft. These levels and the shaft constitute the preliminary development of the mine.

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. A review of current mine underground environmental performance is also provided

Gold production is one the most important mineral process­ing industries in Western Australia. The gold is usually found in either weathered oxidised zones, or associated with sulfides. In the latter case, oxidation is achieved by some form of chemical processing, such as roasting or more recently bacterial leaching. In all cases, gold is dissolved out of the oxidised matrix by cyanide solution. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide generally represented by the formula Fe1_,S where O x 0.125. Three different structural forms ofpyrrhotite are known to occur naturally, stoichiometric FeS (troilite), hexagonal pyrrhotite Fe1_xS and monoclinic pyrrhotite Fe7S8 [I]. Substitution of iron atoms within the pyrrhotite structure by other ions of similar atomic radius such as nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese is also possible [2], and often observed in natural pyrrhotite samples. Pyrrhotite is abundant in Western Australian sulfide mineral deposits which are commonly associated with gold bearing ores. It is generally believed that pyrrhotite has a detrimental effect on gold recovery from such ores, as it is commonly claimed to decompose in alkaline, aerated cyanide solutions to form iron cyanide complexes, thus consuming free cyanide, and to form sulfur/oxygen containing species such as sulfate, through oxidation of sulfur in pyrrhotite, which thus consumes oxygen. From information gleaned from the literature, claims about the high reactivity of pyrrhotite in cyanide appear to be based on early cyanidation studies performed on gold ore samples which have been poorly characterised, and contained impurities such as pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, which may have also contributed to the levels of species observed in solution [3-5]. In addition, the investigations do not take into account that iron atoms in the pyrrhotite structure may have been partially substituted by other atoms that influence the solubility of pyrrhotite in cyanide solution.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the influence of atmospheric pressure changes on methane gas migration through mine seals at a mine site located in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. The mine gained access to a coal reserve through part of an abandoned mine and constructed nine seals to isolate the extensive old workings from the active mine area. Underground problems were experienced when atmospheric pressure fell, causing methane gas to migrate around the seals and into the active workings. During mining operations, methane gas levels exceeded legal limits and coal production was halted until the ventilation system could be improved. When mining resumed with increased air flow, methane gas concentrations occasionally exceeded the legal limits and production had to be halted until the methane level fell within the mandated limit. To assist the ventilation system, a pressure relief borehole located in the abandoned workings near the mine seals was proposed. Preliminary estimates by a gob gas simulator (computer model) suggested that a 0.76 m (2.5 ft) diameter pressure relief borehole with an exhaust fan would be necessary to remove enough methane from the abandoned area so that the ventilation system could dilute the gas in the active workings. However, by monitoring methane gas emissions and seal pressure, during periods of low atmospheric pressure, the amount of methane gas that migrated into the active mine workings was calculated. Researchers then determined that a relief borehole, 20.3 cm (8-in) with an exhaust fan could remove at least twice the maximum measured volume of migrating methane gas. Because gas concentrations in the abandoned workings could potentially reach explosive limits, it was proposed that the mine eliminate the exhaust fan. Installation of the recommended borehole and enlarging two other ventilation boreholes located in the abandoned area reduced methane gas leakage through the seals by at least 63%.

The Mojave Desert province is comprised of a diverse group of mountains that range in elevation from about 2,000&apos; (600 m) to 3,000&apos; (900 m), separated by tracts of alluvial cover. The province is bounded on the southwest by the San Andreas fault, on the north by the Garlock fault, on the east by the Death Valley- Granite Mountains fault. Rocks preserved in the Mojave Desert Province collectively record a rich assemblage of Precambrian crystalline basement&apos; ranging in age from ca. 1.8 to 1.35 Ga, upper Precambrian and Paleozoic Cordilleran miogeoclinal sediments and platform rocks, Mesozoic backarc and interarc shallow marine and continental sequences, locally emplaced Permian- Triassic syenitic plutons, extruded hypabyssal volcanic rocks of the ?Jurassic "Sidewinder Volcanic Series," and regionally intruded late Mesozoic granitoid batholithic rocks (Dokka et al., 1988). The Mojave block apparently was a high-standing element for much of the early Tertiary, with strata of Late Cretaceous or early Tertiary age preserved only on its margins. Beginning about in the late Oligocene an intense episode of regional north-south extension was developed in a roughly east- west trending belt that traversed the central part of the province. This extensional belt has been termed the Mojave Extensional Belt. The extensional regime lasted from about 22-17 Ma, and is generally divided into two phases. The first, from about 22-20 Ma records intense extension via the activity of crustal-scale, simple shear, low- angle normal faults, high-angle normal faults, and extensional fracturing, along with intrusion of intermediate to silicic volcanic rocks, including episodes of explosive volcanic activity. The Peach Springs Tuff, a major regional marker unit that extends across the Mojave from Arizona to about Barstow, forms an effective stratigraphic lid on the extensional interval, (i.e., is not rotated) and is dated isotopically at about 18.5 Ma. The extensional episode was followed by an interval of high- angle normal faulting and dike emplacement from about 19 to 17 Ma, and was accompanied by at least local uplift and volcanism. Most volcaniclastic and epiclastic sedimentary units of the central Mojave block post-date the interval of extension and normal faulting, and occur as a complex of marginal alluvial and more interior lacustrine facies that formed as recently as late Miocene (ca 13 Ma). Local sequences (e.g., Lava Mountains) record deposition up to about 8 Ma, but there appears to be a regional "gap" from then until at least local successions record Pleistocene deposition. Magnetic and isotopic age studies indicate a complex history of crustal rotations, distributed across a number of discrete domains, during the past 10 Ma. Some of the youngest volcanic and geomorphic features apparently developed at "holes" formed at the edges of rotated blocks.

The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m.
