One of the most critical skills developed by underground coal miners is the ability to interpret natural warning signals in terms of impending roof failure. A miner receives a variety of signals which can be called warning and which can be classed broadly by sense: aural, visual, and tactile. This paper concentrates on those signals which are airborne and audible. These signals are creaks, cracks, pops, groans, snaps, booms, tears, rips, and other assorted pulses which emanate from the roof strata, coal pillars, and artificial support in response to the stresses induced by the mine opening. These pulses are sometimes referred to as "talk". Although it is clear that miners rely on roof talk to assess the roof's stability, it is not clear of what roof talk is composed. It has been described in a variety of figurative ways, but has not been scientifically characterized. As will be shown shortly, the purpose of this research is very specific. The ramifications, however, are very broad, and are, indeed, still being followed.

SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. In situ or pre-mining horizontal stresses are arguably the least well understood of the principal inputs into underground coal mining geotechnical engineering design, whether analytical, empirical, or numerical. This is a direct result of both the cost and difficulty of obtaining meaningful stress measurements, the various limitations of the measurement method in terms of sourcing strata types that approximate the assumed conditions of the post-measurement mathematics to convert measured strains into stresses, and a common practice by some geotechnical professionals to preferentially utilise generic values rather than interrogate the available measurement data for cause and effect relationships between horizontal stress magnitudes, directions and a range of associated controls. That numerical modelling simulations attempt to mimic reality but often rely on simplified generic horizontal stress input assumptions is a particular cause for further consideratio The paper attempts to further explore the nature of in situ horizontal stresses using a range of stress measurement results from the Australian coal sector supplemented by several international studies addressing the same basic issue, the result being a number of credible and highly relevant “cause and effect" inter-relationships between the three principal in situ stresses in addition to the influence of rock properties (e. Young's Modulus and Poisson's Ratio), cover depth and the larger-scale structural geological environment. In particular, the paper demonstrates that despite being commonly overlooked as a primary rock/coal material property, Poisson's Ratio and the associated K Effect are intrinsic to understanding 3D in situ stress measurement results and therefore, predicting in situ stress magni- tudes more generally for geotechnical analyses purposes. As a fundamental question, the paper addresses whether it is necessary and of engineering value to characterise in situ horizontal stresses: according to distinct "domains," in the same way that more easily identifiable geotechnical properties such as rock mass ratings, coal seam thickness, ply splits, and cover depth are often treated.

"INTRODUCTIONProject-related studies showed that lab tests are a helpful tool for the planning of EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in cohesionless soils. This type of ground commonly represents the extended application range for EPB shields, which demands for a treatment with additives. Considering soil conditioning with foam, so far, approaches exist for the investigation of the foam quality and of the conditioning behavior of soils (e.g. (EFNARC GUIDELINES 2001 2003)), but not any standards for testing procedures related to soil conditioning. State-of-the-art research on the topic is and was conducted for example in Bochum (Germany) cf. (Budach 2012; Maidl 1995), in Lyon (France) cf. (Quebaud et al. 1998), in Oxford and Cambridge (Great Britain) cf. (Borghi 2006; Peña Duarte 2007), in Delft (Netherlands) cf. (Bezuijen and Schaminée 2001), in Turin (Italy) cf. (Borio 2010; Peila et al. 2013; Vinai 2006), and in Aachen (Germany) cf. (Vennekötter 2012). Additionally, applied science is reported by the tunneling practice and suppliers of conditioning agents. Although the research focus in all these and further studies varied, similar test methods and test series were applied. A standardization of essential properties and testing methods (setup and procedures) however did not take place. The results from laboratory testing can only function as index values for practice because in the studies, production and application of the conditioning agents mainly takes place under atmospheric conditions. Nevertheless, the tests enable basic understanding of feasibility as well as processes and interactions going on during soil conditioning. For recommendations for standardized and reproducible testing see (Budach 2012; Budach and Thewes 2015).The most extensive investigations on the flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures have been performed by using the slump test from concrete engineering, cf. (DIN EN 12350-2 2009-08), which originally is applied on evaluating the workability of fresh concrete. Although this test does not describe the actual flow behavior, it rather represents an index on the workability, very much experience exists with this test method. Besides others, the workability – or flow behavior – of the EPB support medium certainly is a major factor of influence on the properties of the material in the excavation chamber and thus, for effective tunneling with EPB shields, cf. (Galli and Thewes 2014). For a summary of various investigations on the workability of conditioned soils using the slump test and resulting recommended slump ranges see (Budach 2012; Vinai 2006). Thereof, slumps between 10 and 20 cm have been reported as suitable workability for EPB applications. However, there is actually not much known about the real flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures related to rheological properties such as the viscosity (?) or potential yield stresses (t0). These physical values are necessary for a realistic determination of face pressure, for the design of required torques, and for an evaluation of the material flow at different locations in the excavation chamber, in the screw conveyor or on the conveyor belt. To generate a linear pressure distribution at the tunnel face, as it is assumed a priori, a low-viscosity fluid is favorable, whereas in the screw conveyor, a high-viscous fluid is needed for a controlled pressure decrease. On the conveyor belt, yield stress plays an important role preventing deliquescence and spilling from the belt. Attempts in characterizing the actual flowing of soil-foam mixtures have so far only been made by few researchers, the application of rheometry is rare."

"Horsehead Metal Products is a zinc refinery in Mooresboro NC treating crude Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade Zinc by a hydrometallurgical process, comprising leaching, zinc solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW), melting and casting and bleed treatment. Cadmium removal by zinc dust cementation plays an essential role in the bleed treatment circuit to prevent a build-up of cadmium in the circuit. Silica, although not present at significant levels in the WOX feed material (approximately 0.3%), had a significant impact on the efficiency of cadmium cementation with zinc dust, most likely due to the passivation of zinc dust particles with silica gel. Solid/liquid separation efficiency by filter press was also impacted. The silica levels were mapped throughout the circuit in an attempt to identify the source of the silica issues. Adjustments including using PLS as feed to cementation, pH control in WOX leaching and neutralization have been introduced to mitigate the issues created by silica gel in the circuit. INTRODUCTION Located in North Carolina, Horsehead Metal Products Inc. is a hydrometallurgical zinc refinery processing Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade (SHG) zinc. The flowsheet, known as the Modified Zincex® process, consists of leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning, melting and casting and bleed treatment as illustrated in Figure 1. Cadmium cementation, part of the bleed treatment process, provides an essential bleed of cadmium from the circuit, as metallic cement. The Cadmium cementation circuit consists of agitated cementation reactors, a zinc dust addition system, filter presses, agitated purification (releach) reactors and a cadmium concentrate filter press Silica can be found in several forms in acid leaching. The first form is fine silicate particles. The size of the particles can vary from one to twenty microns (1). Fine silicate particles can lead to the formation of crud in solvent extraction circuits (2, 3). At Mooresboro, crud has been observed in Depletion, which is part of the solvent extraction circuit. Silica content in the solution in this section is high. The second form of silica is monosilicic acid Si(OH)4, which begins to polymerize almost immediately upon being leached into solution. Monosilicic acid polymerizes to silica gel or a silica precipitate dependent primarily on supersaturation (5). Factors that influence the rate of polymerization include temperature, sulfuric acid concentration / pH, hydrofluoric acid concentration, seeding, and dissolved salts concentration such as zinc and aluminum in the solution (4, 5, 6). In sulfate systems, silica solubility is reported in the range of 150 to 450 ppm of SiO2 (3, 5, 7)."

INTRODUCTION The demand for specialty metals in industrial applications is in it's healthiest state since the late 1970'8, and several specific markets are recording record sales. Such metals as gold, silver, zirconim., titanium, beryllium, gallium, germanium, the platinum group, and the lanthanides accounted for sales in excess of $2 billion in 1985 among the end uses covered in this report. Although specialty metals as a group have suffered the effects of recessionary pressures in the past, these metals have proved more resiliant than such large volume metals as copper and nickel. This is due to the unique physical properties they possess which makes the threat of substitution or replacement through technological development uneconomic. The outlook for these specialty metals is optimistic in electronics, catalysts, ceramics, and alloys, and their specialty status results .in a combined average annual growth in demand of 7% through 1990. WHAT MAKES THESE METALS SPECIAL? Such characteristics as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, catalytic activity, thermal stability, and optical properties allow the term specialty to be applied to these metals. More importantly, all of these metals possess more than one of these qualities, as shown in Table 1. [ ] These five major functions are important in the end uses for these metals, although the specific applications vary somewhat. Conductivity in term of low or high electrical resistance is of obvious importance to electronics manufacturers. Producers of circuit boards or semiconductors require such metals as gold, palladium, platinum, and gallium due to their low electrical resistivity. However, these producers also require such metals as beryllium in the oxide form for insulation components because of the compound's low electrical conductivity. Although the lanthanides' conductive characteristics are not particularly attractive in electronics, they are of great importance to alloy manufacturers producing permanent magnets for automotive and computer applications. Corrosion and wear resistant properties are extremely attractive to a number of end-use industries, particularly in view of the estimate by the United States Bureau of Mines that $10 to $50 billion in losses are experienced by U.S. industry due to equipment corrosion and $100 billion due to equipment wear. The strength of high purity titanium and zirconium make these metals the obvious choice for corrosion and wear resistance particularly in the chemical processing industry, where the ability to maintain integrity in corrosive environments is a must. Heat exchangers, nuclear control rods, and a number of parts in jet engines have benefited greatly from the use of these metals. However, such other specialty metals as beryllium, and the lanthanides also improve the wear or corrosion resistance in various products. For example, a beryllium-copper alloy contact maintains it's spring like character, and does not loose this character after repeated use, which could result in the loss of an electrical contact. Lanthanide, in the form of cerium oxide, is commonly employed in alloys used to produce catalytic converter casings for the purpose of reducing damage by corrosive road salt. In some instances, the catalytic activity of several of the specialty metals assists in the economic production of other materials. Two types of native sulfur deposits have been found in Lechuguilla Cave: thin late-stage crusts and massive early- formed deposits. Most, if not all, of the crusts appear to have formed by remobilization of native sulfur contained within gypsum and sulfur masses. The process is occurring today and is slowly converting the sulfur to gypsum. The absence of primary gypsum or reductants in the cave indicates that the early-formed massive sulfur deposits did not form by in-place reduction of sulfate, which is the process that formed the commercial sulfur deposits in the Delaware basin. Instead, it appears that H2S dissolved in basinal brines was oxidized by oxygen in near-surface ground waters in the cave. Fluid- inclusion data, which suggest the presence of both fresh water and saline water as the sulfur formed, support this interpretation. Although individual sulfur deposits in Lechuguilla Cave are no more than several tens of metric tons, the abundance of secondary gypsum (as much as 10 meters thick) indicates that native sulfur may once have been much more extensive.

INTRODUCTION The scope of mineral finance extends beyond the economic aspects of property evaluation to all of those activities involving acquisition and utilization of funds with an objective to optimize the value of the firm. It must, therefore, en- compass consideration of the overall financial goals of the firm, decisions involving external versus internal growth and domestic versus foreign investments, management of working cap- ital, efforts to minimize the cost of capital, and decisions with regards to the instruments of long- term debt and equity financing. The scope of this section is limited to considerations of special interest to the mineral or petroleum engineer, which include the following aspects of mineral finance: (1) The technical aspects of mineral or coal property or oil and gas reservoir evaluation which provide the basis for estimation and forecasting of revenues and costs. (2) Estimation and forecasting of costs and prices in a inflationary economic environment. (3) Calculation of cash flows which model .. , the investment in minerals, coal or oil, and gas. Such models require assumptions as to the timing of cash flows, escalation of capital and operating costs, base prices, and escalation, the tax regime, royalties, division of profits and the economic aspects of loans. (4) The role of discount rate in the economic analysis of an investment which requires consideration of the opportunity costs of the firm, cost of capital, risk premiums. (5) Risk analysis including application of the concepts of conditional net present value, expected value, and risk preference as well as the application of the techniques of sensitivity and simulation. (6) Selection of application criteria for in- vestment decision making. (7) Capital structure with particular reference to the effect of debt financing. (8) Consideration of sources of funds utilized by the minerals industries. (9) Long-range planning including portfolio analysis. This section is limited to principles, methodologies, and trends in mineral investment, finance, and long-range planning in the United States with a perspective from the year 1984. Consideration of the key concepts is supplemented by case examples of investment risk analysis and financial structure. Important factors affecting mineral investment evaluation during the 1980s include volatile metals prices, cost inflation, and the introduction of techniques requiring the computer and its capacity for improved technical and economic analysis into the hands of those who know most about the industry. The personal computer is replacing the calculator on the desk of the individual analyst and is rapidly becoming a required tool for the study of engineering and economics. Examples of change brought about by the micro-computer include greatly improved techniques of cost estimation, wider application of the computer for project analysis, computer graphics, reserve estimation, geostatistical analysis, mine design and other techniques that capitalize on the ability of the computer to handle

The determination of the precision of reserve estimates (tonnage, grade, quantity of metal) for an entire deposit or a large block in a deposit has received some attention in the early developments of geostatistics. A general formula to derive the estimation variance of any linear combination of a large number of sample values can be found in any geostatistical textbook like David (1977) or Journel and Huijbregts (1978). A particular case of this general formula is of course the kriging of the entire deposit. However, besides the technical difficulty of dealing with many samples the application of this formula necessitates the knowledge of the covariance between any two samples in the deposit. This is quite unrealistic in the usual case of limited stationarity where the assumption of a covariance or a variogram just function of the distance vector between two samples is only valid for samples within the same area of restricted size.

In the period 1982-1992, world trade has increased in real terms about 65% (Anon., 1992b). The nominal value of this trade in the early 1990s is approximately $5 trillion. In 1970, mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of world trade. By 1980, despite rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities made up about 18% of the total value of world trade, with crude oil amounting to 16% and other minerals the remaining 2%. By 1987, the major worldwide economic slowdown and falling oil prices meant that minerals constituted only about 10% of the total value of world trade, or about $500 billion in 1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). The importance of minerals in world trade since 1987 has remained at about these levels. Approximately 40% of world mineral commodity production is traded internationally. Some economists predict that minerals and other commodities are likely to continue to decline in relative importance in terms of the value of world economic output, as well as world trade, into the foreseeable future (Thurow, 1992). This projected decline in commodity demand may also be related to much slower global economic growth over the next decade (Alperovitz, 1992). Industrial minerals and rocks constituted roughly 2.5% of total mineral commodity exports in the late 1980s, but their relative importance as a portion of mineral commodity exports nearly doubled in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). Industrial minerals constitute the most rapidly growing share of total mineral commodity exports. In addition, price declines among industrial minerals were uncommon in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). While prices of sulfur and most of the fertilizer minerals have seen some erosion and slow growth in markets in the period 1987-1992, other industrial minerals have increased in both value and share of the export market (USBM, 1992). The place of industrial minerals in world trade becomes even more significant when one looks at shipments of chemical fertilizers and basic chemicals that are counted as manufactured products rather than industrial mineral commodities. The United States is the major world producer of industrial mineral commodities and products made from these nonmetallic minerals and rocks. The former Soviet Union, now The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and China have very significant deposits of industrial minerals. Japan exports significant quantities of cement. The US, CIS, and Morocco export large amounts of phosphate rock. Canada and Germany export substantial amounts of potash. Sulfur from Poland, industrial diamonds from South Africa, Zaire, and Brazil, and fluorspar from Mexico are all important exports.

In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by " remote control " mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation. In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term "communications" as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. Primarily aimed at the workers, who greatly outnumber the salaried administrative people, this publication mainly documents the fortunes of individual mine workers who are felt to have achieved something with their lives, e.g., a mine worker who had managed to put four children through universities, the philosophy behind this being to inspire other workers to achieve worth- while goals.

The environment in which the surface mining industry operates today is considerably different than that of a few years ago. Increased pressure from the public, government, labor and internal industry factors calling for the fulfillment of rapidly changing expectations is especially intense in the surface coal mining industry. Such things as requirements for increased production, the Mine Health and Safety Act, environmental concerns and land reclamation, shortages of qualified and enthusiastic employees and market cycles coupled with price competition are but some of the specific items that are requiring the surface mining industry to better utilize equipment, materials, and labor resources available, There is one technical tool available which will assist management to increase productivity, improve cost control and assist in planning, organizing and operating surface mines. Industrial Engineering is that tool. Before a discussion of specific applications of Industrial Engineering to surface mining is conducted, it is worthwhile to review a definition of Industrial Engineering and the history of its development. The following definition has been adopted by the American Institute of Industrial Engineers: "Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of men, materials and equipment. It draws upon specialized know- ledge and skill in the mathematical, physical and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems."

During the last 15 years, the North American Mining Industry has experienced increasing usage of cast high chromium white iron grinding media in wet grinding applications. First introduced into the cement industry (klinker grinding) where wear rate reductions of four or five times have been realized compared to steel balls, this same grinding media serve the iron, copper, and phosphate markets by resisting not only impacts and abrasion, but also corrosion which occurs in wet grinding. In these markets, single mills containing 250,000 kg of grinding balls are not un-common and hence the economic potential with respect to lower wear rates can be significant. Add to reduced wear rate the increased production efficiency that is possible and it is readily understood why much of the mining industry uses cast high chromium grinding media. Metallurgically, the alloys used consist of a martensitic matrix containing hard M7C3 eutectic carbides. Carbon (2.0 to 3.5%) and chromium (12 to 277.) are characteristically used to arrive at the desired properties.

The Velvet mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The general area, also known as the Lisbon Valley district, is about 65 kilometers southeast of Moab, Utah and about 120 Kilometers southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado. As shown by the slide, the Velvet area is typical of the high desert of the southwest United States. The elevation at the decline collar is 1,967 meters above sea level. To date, the Velvet has produced 1.5 million kilograms of U308 and 2.1 million kilograms of V205. The current production averages over 4,000 metric tons of ore per month. Access to the Velvet mine is by a 1,160 meter long decline. Fresh air is supplied through the decline and a 152 centimeter cased borehole. Contaminated air is removed by two 152 centimeter cased boreholes. The east side of the mine is mined using a conventional room and pillar method; whereas the west side is mined as combination conventional and random room and pillar,

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting core leaching experiments with sulfuric acid on oxide copper ores from the Cyprus Casa Grande and ASARCO Santa Cruz deposits in Arizona to further our understanding of the leaching process in supergene copper ores as it relates to in situ mining. Leach solutions from atacamite mineralization contained 5 to 30 g/l copper and few extraneous ions. Leachant from chrysocolla ores, with grades similar to the atacamite, contained 2 to 9 g/l copper and abundant extraneous ions. Quartz and K-feldspar had no impact on leach solution composition at any acid concentration (up to 40 g/l) while illite and sericite had minimal impact. Biotite, calcium-rich clay and limonite have a significant impact on solution chemistry when there is abundant free acid in solution. High acid concentrations increase acid consumption in ores with abundant biotite and limonite gangue. High acid concentrations can be used in ores with quartz, K-feldspar, and sericite gangues without increasing acid consumption per unit of copper removed.

I. INTRODUCTION The Atlanta Research Chamber is an UMTA-sponsored applied research facility studying tunnel design, excavation and support systems. It is located directly below Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It is included in the CN-120 contract to build the Peachtree Center subway station, a part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) multi-billion dollar "Phase A" 53-mile transit project, which is 80 percent funded by UMTA with 20 percent provided by local authorities in Atlanta and Fulton and DeKalb counties (Figure 1). The Research Chamber is located immediately south of the main Peachtree Center Station cavern, and is in part an enlargement of the pre-existing Pilot Tunnel excavated to provide bidders on the CN-120 contract a view of the rock conditions (Figure 2). The Research Chamber lies some 3 meters above, and is approximately parallel to, the twin Running Tunnels. The Research Chamber is 18 meters long and has the same 5.5 meter diameter horseshoe shape design dimensions as the twin Running Tunnels.

The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves an area of approximately 860 square miles and collects and processes used water from the city of Chicago and 116 surrounding communities. As a public agency, the MSDGC -Serves a population equivalent to 10 million people which is composed of 5.5 million people and an industrial wasteload equivalent to an additional 4-1/2 million people. -Provides 400 miles of intercepting sewers and tunnels ranging in diameter from 12 inches to 24 feet. -Operates 71 miles of navigable waterways and channels conncecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico and 6,000 miles of inland waterways. -Maintains the largest water reclamation plant in the world. -Processes 1,380,000,000 of used water daily and removes approximately 1,000 dry tons of organic solids each day. -Has spent approximately 700 million dollars in capital improvements to date, and will require expenditures in excess of 3 billion dollars (including over one-half billion dollars in tunnels) to meet existing federal and state water quality standards.

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine that employed nine-entry panel system using supersection technique under a cover ranging from 91 to 168 m (300 to 550 ft). Chain pillar squeeze and large roof-to-floor convergence were first observed at the belt transfer point on the very inby side of the main entries. It propagated outby quickly and within 24 hours it had covered an area approximately 1,250 m long by 762 m wide (4,100 x 2,500 ft). The failure was caught and stopped by a solid barrier pillar. Using computer modeling, the study indicated that the massive failure was initiated due to a combination of undersized chain pillars in some panels and weak immediate floor. Also, the study shows that the massive pillar failure expanded to a large area because of no barrier pillars between some panels and between mains and panels. Based on the computer modeling, alternative mine plans have been proposed to avoid such problems.

Prior to January, 1986, the city of Austin, Texas was on notice by the Federal Government's Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Water Commission, that they were illegally polluting the Colorado River. The wastewater facilities presently in use in South Austin were inadequate to handle the vastly increasing population. The city of Austin, Texas hired Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade and Douglas, Inc. and Dannenbaum Engineering Corporation to design and supervise the construction of an update to their existing system to alleviate this problem. A major criterion handed down to the Designer and Contractor was that the system had to be completed within a two year time frame. The biggest link to the entire design was a tunnel project consisting of 43,000 linear feet (13,106 m) of tunnel, eight feet (2.44 m) in diameter with connecting structures tying into existing and future facilities. The project was awarded to S. A. Healy Construction Company of McCook, Illinois with a low bid of $24,755,000.00. This article summarizes the techniques used in the construction of this tunnel project.
