The Mule Canyon gold deposit, located 14 miles ESE of Battle Mountain, Nevada, was discovered in 1986 as the result of a GFMC grass-roots exploration program. Drilling to date has identified six discrete orebodies which contain a demonstrated gold reserve of 8.487 million tons at an average grade of 0.136 oz/ton, totaling 1,152,000 ounces. Mineralization is associated with argillic alteration and silicification, localized along NNW trending high-angle faults within Miocene basaltic andesites. Trace element geochemistry at Mule Canyon is typical of upper level hot spring precious metal systems, displaying elevated Ag, As, Sb, Hg, and Se.

The issue of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of the amphiboles actinolite, tremo1ite, and anthophyllite to the same degree as asbestos has been studied in detail by the National Stone Association. The ramifications of such a regulation, and the over simplistic regulatory definition of a fiber, are enormous not only for the aggregate industry and its users, but also for the nation. Evaluation of the health, geological, mineralogical, technical, economic and legal issues do not support an "asbestos-like" regulation of non-asbestiform minerals. The adverse consequences of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of actinolite, tremolite and anthophyllite like asbestos would be magnified many times if a similar standard for generic mineral fibers were promulgated.

Diagnostic leaching tests provide a good indication of gold deportation in its various occurrence phases. With the results of these tests, possible flowsheets for difficult ore treatment can be established for further evaluation and plant operation can be optimized. The use of this technique can be extended, including heap leach evaluation and complex copper-gold ores. The results on the use of diagnostic leaching tests in gold ores from Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) are presented and discussed, as well as the methodology to select steps and interpret results used at CVRD Technology Center (Sutec).

The ever increasing costs of labor and supplies have made it imperative that operators of open pits look for some way in which to cope with these increases. One of the most logical ways to increase the efficiency of an operation is by the introduction of larger haulage equipment, as generally haulage costs are the greater portion of the over all expenses. These larger haulage units require larger shovel units. In the late 1930's and the early 1940's large mining, quarrying and heavy construction operations had more or less standardized on the 4 to 6 cubic yard shovels. During this same period the haulage units were generally 22 to 27 tons. Some ten years ago 9 - 13 cubic yard shovels along with plus 50 ton haulage units were introduced by manufacturers in an effort to enable operators to decrease costs.

We have developed first a conveyor belt for transporting large lumps, i.e. Rock Belt successfully, in June 1976. The First Rock Belt had been delivered to Myodani site of Kobe City Developing Board in Japan, and its' successful operation has attract keen interests in customers from over the world as well as Japan. "A direct route for the reduction of magnesium oxide to magnesium using thermal plasma processing, with methane as the reducing gas, has been systematically evaluated. A feasibility study of the reduction reaction has been performed on the MgO-CH4 system at different methane concentrations and temperatures. The effects of changes in the key process parameters, such as the oxide-to-methane ratio and plasma power, on the yield of magnesium have been systematically evaluated. A maximum yield of about 61 mol% Mg was obtained using power of 20.0 kW and a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1. Phase, morphological, elemental and binding energy analyses were performed on the product powders to understand the reduction reaction. Surface oxidation was observed in smaller magnesium particles in all the experiments, while the in-situ sintering of magnesium rods was observed at a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1.5. Magnesium carbide (Mg2C3) was observed in the product, and its mechanism of formation is proposed using phase equilibrium data and a predominance diagram.IntroductionMagnesium has an excellent combination of low density and high strength. These properties have increased worldwide demand for and use of magnesium. Two major processes are used in the commercial synthesis of magnesium metal. The first method is electrolytic reduction and the second is thermal reduction using Pidgeon process. These processes can be classified as traditional techniques, but there are numerous emerging technologies that aim at reducing the production cost of Mg, its environmental impact and energy consumption. Thermal plasma processing is one emerging technique that has great potential in all the abovementioned key areas of magnesium production.Traditional reduction techniques. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m

Short Mountain Silica mines the Clinch Formation, an orthoquartzite, for silica sand. The operation is located near Mooresburg, TN, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Knoxville. Short Mountain is a local geographic name given to an area of resistant sandstone (Fig. 1). The area is part of the Clinch Mountain system that extends from eastern Tennessee to southwestern Virginia. The thick sandstone unit is more technically called a quartz arenite (orthoquartzite) that forms most of the mountain. In 1980, a Knoxville resident brought the Clinch Formation - Short Mountain in particular - to the attention of the large silica-sand producers as a potential silica-sand mine. Working with a local contractor who owned several hundred acres on Short Mountain, the Knoxville resident contacted interested companies. Many silica companies reviewed the property including Ottawa Silica Co., Pennsylvania Glass Sand Co. (both now US Silica Co.),Unimin Corp.,The Morie Co. and others. AFG Industries was the main market for the glass sand product from this potential mine. It had two plants, both within trucking distance from the site. All the silica sand producing companies, however, declined to develop the site. A few years later, Unimin Corp. decided to drill and evaluate the deposit. From that evaluation, Unimin leased the property but later dropped it. The relatively limited market for the Short Mountain product as well as Unimin’s recent acquisition of Carolina Silica were reportedly instrumental in the company’s decision to let go of the lease. Several other companies-unrelated to the silica sand industry - looked at the site but no one was interested in developing it. In 1986, J.D. Nicewonder, owner of coal mines in Virginia and Kentucky, was approached to investigate the site. Nicewonder began to develop the site with the intent to produce glass sand to supply AFG Industries. In May 1988, the first shipment of sand was trucked to AFG Industries.

Thermal pretreatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The effect of pretreatment using conventional and dielectric heating followed by quenching on the fracture properties of a number single and multiphase brittle materials has been investigated. The reduction in the impact fracture energies and particle strengths with and without pretreatment has been measured in precise single-particle experiments using the Ultrafast Load Cell. Variations in the fragmentation pattern caused by different pretreatments were assessed by measurements of the progeny size distributions. The differences in the effect of thermal treatment on single and multiphase materials are discussed based on the experimental results.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. Comminution methods for base metal and precious metal ores have had considerable attention from mine operators, equipment suppliers and design engineers for many years and much of their work has been well reported. This interest derives from a healthy concern with the costs of comminution, often the largest single cost factor in ore dressing of hard ores. Many imaginative innovations have resulted. One notices a trend toward autogenous and semi-autogenous methods, combined with a trend toward very large equipment. Unfortunately, there has been less obvious cost incentive to experiment with softer ores. This is unfortunate because the consequences of inappropriate comminution methods can have an important effect on overall economics by influencing down stream processing and salability of final products. This paper concerns some of the factors to be considered in the selection of comminution methods for potash ores, and gives some specific examples to illustrate some of the principles involved.

The investigation, selection, and implementation of remedial activities for large, complex mining and milling sites is dependent on the cost-effective management of tailing and waste materials. Site investigations evaluate the contaminant source areas, assess the potential release rate of contaminants, and determine the acceptable contaminant release rate for the site. Selection of appropriate remedial activities is based on evaluation of constructability, reliability, performance, effectiveness, permanence and cost. Remedial technologies available for tailing and waste material include removal, consolidation, capping and drainage control. Proper implementation and documentation of the selected remedial activities are critical to the overall success or failure of the remedial program. A step-by-step process, established at the initiation of a project, should accurately document all construction activities, monitor environmental conditions at the site, assess the performance of the remedial activities, and, ultimately certify that the remedial activities have met relevant and appropriate standards. Case histories are presented for a uranium mill at Uravan, Colorado and a lead, zinc mine at Gilman, Colorado. These case histories provide examples as to the combination of remedial technologies that have been applied at these specific sites.

Through tighter control, "insurance" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. Prolonged subzero climatic conditions impose some unique engineering problems for the developer and operator of open-pit mines in the Far North. The remoteness of the job site and the extremely cold, long, dark winters severely tax both man and machine in the quest for the Arctic's rich mineral wealth. Undoubtedly the singular most troublesome problem for the engineer is Permafrost which underlies about 201o of the land area of the world and about 85% of the state of Alaska. Permafrost has its impact on building construction and mine excavation, while posing a more pervasive threat to the-delicate ecologic balance within the Arctic wilderness. Yet the difficulties associated with mining up North may not be as overwhelming as has been previously supposed. For example, the lowest temperature recorded at Point Barrow is -560F, whereas Montana has recorded -69.7° F.. There are no specially designed machines for mining and construction in the Arctic, and efficient equipment utilization is maintained through proper operation and servicing techniques. However, neither equipment or people can be assumed to function normally at -40°F. Special techniques in drilling, blasting, and ripping are being used to yield economically competitive ores. Overall, a fundamental understanding of the nature of Permafrost will allow the engineer to deal expeditiously with an Arctic mining venture and at the same time to deal fairly with Arctic environment.

INTRODUCTION The radiological health significance of thorium-230 stems from its tendency to separate from the uranium238 parent, concentrate in bone tissues, and to subsequently irradiate the radiosensitive tissues lining the bone surfaces and the bone marrow. Indeed, thorium-230 may be the radionuclide which contributes the major dose following intake of natural uranium (Hartley and Pasternack 1979). This is reflected by the most recent recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, which specify the limits shown in Table I for the annual intake of radionuclides by occupationally exposed workers (ICRP 1979). Because of the greater toxicity and different metabolism of thorium-230, monitoring only for uranium-238 does not satisfactorily identify the possible hazard from thorium-230 nor does it provide any real indication of the metabolism or biodynamics of these two radionuclides. Thorium-230 has a half-life of 80,000 years and can be detected by direct counting of the alpha particles or photons emitted during its transformation to radium-226. The 4.69 and 4.62 MeV alpha particles are distinctive and specific indicators of thorium-230 and are emitted with abundances of 76% and 24%, respectively. The principal photon, a 68 keV gamma ray, is emitted in only 0.37% of the transformations and is, therefore, not useful for low level measurements. The other photons emitted have even lower yields, or, in the case of radium L x-rays, are non-specific and, hence, useless for quantification. High sensitivity measurements of thorium-230 currently are usually accomplished by wet washing of the sample substrate, quantitative chemical separation of thorium atoms, and, finally, direct measurement of the alpha particles emitted from a massless deposition. This procedure is complicated, expensive, and time-consuming, and subject to interferences from uranium, other actinides, and other thorium isotopes. Recently, the feasibility of low-level measurement of thorium-230 by neutron activation analysis (NAA) was demonstrated (Kathren, Desrosiers and Church 1980). Two principal variations of the NAA method were used in this study: 1) instrumental NAA technique and 2) post-irradiation radiochemical separations (RCS). Instrumental NAA procedure is a nondestrucive technique which is preferred because of its simplicity. The procedure is as follows: after irradiation with a known neutron fluence, the samples are transferred to a clean container and quantitative gamma spectroscopy performed. With the radiochemical separations procedure, the sample is initially treated as in the instrumental technique. However, after irradiation, a known amount of "carrier" is added to the sample. The element(s) of interest are then separated from the rest of the matrix by distillation, precipitation and extraction techniques. The resulting sample, now free of interferring elements, is then ready for gamma-ray analysis. The use of a "carrier" is to determine the loss of element-of-interest during the chemical separations process. The neutron activation cross section of thorium-230 has an epicadmium resonance value of 1,010 barns (Mughahghab and Garber 1976) and a thermal neutron cross section of 23 barns. The 25.52 hr thorium-231 produced releases two photons of significance: an 84 keV complex, (6.5% yield) and 25.6 keV (15% yield) (Lederer and Shirley 1978). The 84 keV complex is particularly useful for quantification since neither natural uranium, thorium, their daughters, or activation products emit photons in this region. However, the higher yield of the 25.6 keV photon may result in increased sensitivity if there are no other photons of similar energy emitted by other radionuclides in the sample. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Thorium-230 standard stock solution was prepared from a pure sample of the oxide purchased from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. From this stock solution a series of samples were prepared for irradiation in the TRIGA Mark I reactor at Reed College. Various dilutions were prepared as well as thorium-230 spiked urine samples. Irradiation times varied from 1 to 54 minutes in a neutron fluence rate of 1.84 x 1012 n/ cu m-sec. The neutron spectrum was abundant in thermal neutrons, having a Cd ratio of approximately 10. Treated urine samples were also analyzed by the NAA instrumental method. Analysis of untreated urine samples was not possible due to the high background

Surface mining and reclamation has the potential to at least temporarily increase surface runoff and resultant erosion and gully development. This increase in erosion is due in part to compaction of the soil surface with heavy equipment, creation of large relatively unvegetated watersheds, and elimination of natural dendritic ephemeral drainage patterns. Methods for stabilizing gully channels which may develop prior to establishment of sufficient vegetation to control erosion are analyzed. Utilization of various sizes of riprap for channel lining, the use of riprap check dams, reinforcement of riprap check dams, and the relation- ship of type of control structure to area of watershed and resultant flow velocities are discussed.

"Longwall mining has a significant influence on gas wells located within longwall chain pillars. Subsurface subsidence and abutment pressure induced by longwall mining can cause excessive stresses and deformations in gas well casings. If the gas well casings are compromised or ruptured, natural gas could migrate into the mine workings, potentially causing a fire or explosion. By the current safety regulations, the gas wells in the chain pillars have to be either plugged or protected by adequate coal pillars. The current regulations for the gas well pillar design are based on the 1957 Pennsylvania gas well pillar study. The study provided guidelines for gas well pillars by considering their support area and overburden depth as well as the location of the gas wells within the pillars. As the guidelines were developed for room-and-pillar mining under shallow cover, they are no longer applicable to modern longwall mining, particularly under deep cover. Gas well casing failures have occurred even though the chain pillars for the gas wells met the requirements by the 1957 study.This study presents seven cases of conventional gas wells penetrating through longwall chain pillars in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The study indicates that overburden depth and pillar size are not the only determining factors for gas well stability. The other important factors also include subsurface ground movement, overburden geology, and weak floor, as well as the construction of gas wells. Numerical modeling was used to model abutment pressure, subsurface deformations, and the response of gas well casings. The study demonstrated that numerical models are able to predict with reasonable accuracy the subsurface deformations in the overburden above, within, and below the chain pillars, and the potential location and modes of gas well failures, therefore providing a more quantifiable approach to assess the stability of the gas wells in longwall chain pillars.INTRODUCTIONIn the eastern United States, abundant gas wells have been drilled through coal seams that are being actively mined by longwall mining. The existence of gas wells in the U.S. coal fields, whether active or abandoned, have caused many issues for longwall mining. First of all, any gas well in the mining area has to be located by all possible means. Secondly, the gas wells within longwall panels have to be plugged, as cutting through gas wells will allow natural gas to flow into the active longwall mines. On the other hand, the gas wells within longwall chain pillars or barrier pillars can be left in place if the wells are protected by properly designed pillars."

The redox reactions that occur on pyrrhotite and pentlandite in contact with oxygenated deionized water were examined using voltammetry. Reactions were put forward in which both minerals were progressively hydroxylated to form thermodynamically metastable surface intermediate products. These intermediates were modelled as metal deficient sulphides where a sulphurous layer was coordinated onto the remaining metal sites via polysulphides. Prior to hydroxylation pentlandite exhibited changes in the surface stoichiometry which were not related to pH effects. The formation of polysuiphide-sulphur intermediates were believed to promote collectorless; flotability for the two minerals. Microflotation tests (0.3 g samples) verified that the surface potential and particle size affected the flotation response, excessive oxidation inhibiting the minerals' flotability. Larger scale tests using ore samples (30 g) confirmed that the extent of pulp oxidation, particle size distribution and the presence of frothers affected the flotation response, the findings being in accordance with the postulated model for the hydrophobic species generated on the pentlandite and pyrrhotite surfaces.
