The Lupin mine consists of a gold mining, milling, and refining complex located 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle on the southwest shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. (Fig.1). The mine was commissioned in 1982 and is presently producing 6 t/a (193,000 oz per year) of gold from 612 kt (675,000 st) of ore. The success of this operation is due to such factors as the continuity and grade of the ore body, the competency of the host rock, low mining costs, efficient milling, the transportation of people and materials to and from the mine site, and the unique work schedule resulting in a stable workforce. Echo Bay Mines operated a silver mine at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, from 1965 to 1982. The company first obtained an option on the Lupin property from Inco in February 1979 and completed an underground exploration program in 1979-1980. Topographic relief is low and vegetation is sparse in the continental subarctic climatic zone, consisting mainly of moss and lichens. Temperature extremes are from 24°C to - 45°C (+75°F to -49°F) with an annual mean of -12°C (+54°F). Permafrost extends from near surface to 500 m (1640 ft) in the ore zone. Its remote location and harsh climate presented some challenging design and logistical problems. Construction began at the Lupin mine site in 1980. Before construction, a 1.5-km (5000-ft) gravel landing strip was prepared, suitable for landing a C 130 Hercules. The entire Lupin project took 20 months to build. All of the men and materials were transported to the site with some 1100 Hercules flights and several hundred Convair 640 flights. The Convairs transported construction crews, which numbered 400 at their peak, and also carried 3.2 kt (3535 st) of supplies during construction. The facilities were constructed and commissioned for a total cost of C$135 million. The operation was originally designed to throughput 860 t/d (950 stpd). Expansion in 1983, circuit refinements, and some capital projects brought the daily throughput to 1.7 kt/d (1850 stpd). The underground mine delivers 612 kt/a (675,000 stpy) of ore to the mill at an average head grade of 8.46 g/t (0.3 oz per st). The ore is nonrefractory and is processed in a conventional cyanide leach using the Merrill Crowe process. Gold recovery is about 95.0%. The average production cost is $US5.85/g ($US 182 per oz) based on 1987 figures. Mining at Lupin – Geology The Lupin deposit occurs in amphibolite grade iron formation overlain by mudstones (phyllites) and underlain by graywacke (quartzites). Contacts between the wallrock units and the iron formation are well defined. It has been folded and tilted into a megascopic antiform-synform-antiform structure (Fig. 2). Gold occurs primarily within the sulfide rich iron formation, with some minor occurrences in sulfide poor iron formation. The distinction between sulfide rich and sulfide poor iron formation is based on a visual cutoff of 5% total sulfide content. Mining widths are determined by an assay cutoff of 4.2 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold. There are few tons between 1.7 and 4.2 g/t (0.06 and 0.15 oz per st). The amphibolitic iron formation at the mine ranges from 1.5 to 20 m (5 to 65 ft) wide and has been followed over a strike length exceeding 1.7 km (5600 ft). The wider portions of the ore body tend to occur at its north extent and south nose. The gold-bearing iron formation appears on plan as a Z-shaped structure made up of three zones: the West, Center, and East. The West and Center zones dip steeply to the East (75° to 90°). Each of the ore zones plunge at an angle of about 65°. Total strike length of the three zones is more than 610 m (2000 ft). The zones are confirmed at a depth of 650 m (2130 ft) below surface. The Center zone is the widest and varies from 4.5 to 20 m (15 to 65 ft) while the West is the narrowest, averaging 1.5 m ( 5 ft). The footwall is comprised of quartzites that are strongly jointed and locally grades into phyllite, which comprises the hanging wall. The hanging wall and footwall are reversed in the West zone. Mineralogy of the ore at Lupin consists of amphibole minerals (hornblende, cummingtonite, and grunerite), feldspars, quartz, occasionally garnet, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, minor pyrite, and trace chalcopyrite. Also found in minor amounts are scheelite, apatite, epidote, calcite, tourmaline, and some arsenides (notable loellingite). Quartz

The dynamic behavior of batch mill, CSTR mill, and a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone was analyzed using the dynamic population balance model (PBM). The dynamic solution of the PBM of a batch, CSTR and a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone forms the basis of the dynamic analysis presented here. Two numerical dynamic solution approaches were used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data was used to obtain the functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Different dynamic solutions were obtained depending on the numerical approach used. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

The goal of this project is to develop, demonstrate, and document the beneficial use applications of a ponded F-fly ash as a road subbase material for the 2.1-mile Meredosia Industry Access Truck Route in Meredosia, Illinois. Approximately 60,000 to 70,000 cubic yards of ponded fly ash are proposed for use on this project without negative environmental impacts to surface water or groundwater. The County Highway Truck Route will consist of a 24-foot wide road built on a 0 to 7-foot thick compacted F-fly ash subbase. Laboratory testing indicates this fly ash will serve adequately as a road subbase, conforming to IDOT standard specifications. The economic considerations of using the Meredosia F-fly ash will also be developed so that a detailed cost-benefit analysis can be prepared for this project and for future projects. This project represents a two-year cooperative development and demonstration effort among the Office of Coal Development and Marketing (OCDM) of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (IDCCA), Southern Illinois University (SIU), Morgan County Highway Department (MCHD), Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), AmerenCIPS, and the Morgan County Regional Planning Commission. It is anticipated that monitoring activities will continue for a period of three (3) years after the completion of this project. The MCHD and IDOT will oversee all construction activities and long-term performance evaluation studies. Successful demonstration of large-volume beneficial use applications of F-fly ash at this site will significantly reduce management costs for power plants burning Illinois Coal. Furthermore, it will encourage similar utilization strategies at other sites in the State of Illinois.

"Experience from Australia has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence”, and far-field horizontal movements – even occurring beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behaviour recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 – 720ft. Investigations (including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program) found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and far-field horizontal movements may have occurred resulting from the adjacent mining. The paper discusses the phenomenon of non-conventional subsidence behaviour and the Ryerson State Park case study, including an assessment of mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioural mechanisms. INTRODUCTION Non-Conventional Subsidence The conventional understanding of coal mine subsidence on which most current subsidence understanding and prediction techniques are based, includes the concept of angle of draw which effectively limits the lateral extent of subsidence effects and impacts. Within this zone – above and marginally beyond the boundary of mining – downward vertical subsidence is the dominant component, together with localised horizontal movements towards the mined region, with related tilts and strains. However, more recent experience from Australia over the last two or three decades has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This is found to occur in areas of irregular surface topography or variable terrain, and is characterised by phenomena such as valley closure, valley floor uplift or upsidence, and far-field horizontal movements, all of which can occur beyond the conventional angle of draw limits. Evaluation and subsequent development of a quarry in east-central Missouri was based on a general but brief examination of outcrops and core from five (5) test holes. Neither core, outcrops, nor existing quarries in the general area gave any indication of potential major problems. In the third year of operation large areas of collapse rubble, consisting of green shale and large blocks of limestone and sandstone, were encountered. Their size and random distribution resulted in both blasting and quality control problems. By the fourth year of operation, production costs became prohibitive and the site was abandoned. Prior to dismantling the plant a geologic investigation, which included shallow seismic and resistivity surveys, was made of the unmined portion of the lease. The collapse dolines appear to be related to structure and predate development of the modern topography. Surface indications of these features are few. The seismic profiles were especially helpful in plotting their distribution. Geologic relationships and seismic data developed at this site are being related to similar suspect areas in Missouri and have been useful in their evaluation.

The operations of Bethlehem Copper are situated in the south-central interior of British Colombia at an elevation of 4900 feet above sea level. Main road and rail transportation systems pass through Ashcroft in the Thompson Valley, which is 28 miles by road from the minesite. The operation was the first low-grade open-pit porphyry copper mine in British Colombia. The minerals are chiefly chalcopyrite and bornite, while the rock is principally feldspar and quartz. In the outer fringes of the orebodies sane pyrite is present. Average grade of mill feed is 0.55% copper.

The La Cienega Gold District is located at latitude 25°01'01"N and longitude 106°19'00"W, in the NW part of the State of Durango, Mexico. Ore deposits at The La Cienega District consist of a series of sub-parallel, NE-trending veins which cut andesitic and rhyolitic rocks that belong to both upper and lower tertiary volcanic sequences. The veins are vertical to steeply-depping structures which consist of quartz, generally containing gold-silver and less than ten percent lead, zinc and copper sulfide and sulfosalt minerals. Supergene enrichment is present on the upper parts of known oreshoots. Tertiary volcanic rocks of rhyolitic composition are the main host rocks of the gold-bearing quartz veins in the District. Gold productionc from the La Cienega orebody is scheduled to reach 100,000 ounces per year, becoming the largest gold-producing District in the Sierra Madre Occidental Province.

Acid mine drainage became a reality through the exposure of the first bituminous coal seam, either by man or by nature. At first the small amount of acid formed was quickly and efficiently neutralized by basic rock strata and by neutral or alkaline water. As soon as extensive mining operations overtaxed nature's own defensive measures, acid mine drainage became a problem of concern to government and the coal industry. It was the purpose of the studies conducted at Mellon Institute to accumulate knowledge, both applied and fundamental, relating to the formation and disposal of acid mine effluents. It was during this program that the microbiology of acid mine water was studied. Most bituminous coal mine effluents are highly acidic and contain, along with other ions, high concentrations of ferrous iron. The acid is sulfuric, and. the iron is present as the sulfate; both are the oxidation products of iron sulfides (FeS2) which are present in the form of pyrites, marcasites, or other sulfuritic minerals. Ground water inflow into a mine and the re¬sultant impact on district hydrology can be pre¬dicted on a site specific basis once the ground water flow systems at the site are sufficiently well under¬stood so that a valid conceptual model can be de¬veloped. Ground water flow systems are controlled by the hydrogeologic properties of the materials at the, site, including hydraulic continuity along flow paths, and boundary conditions. Preliminary delin¬eation of hydrostratigraphic units for conceptual models frequently can be based on surface water data; specifically, spring locations and the gain-loss reaches of streams. Quantitative predictions of mine water inflow and its impact on regional hydrology require col¬lection and analysis of numerous types of data. Hydraulic conductivity must be defined quantita¬tively both parallel and perpendicular to bedding as well as areally for each hydrostratigraphic unit. The characteristics of the Davis shale in case his¬tory number 2 illustrate this concept very well. The storage characteristics also must be determined for each hydrostratigraphic unit and the potential or hydrostatic head should be quantified vertically and areally for each unit. The potentiometric measure¬ments in the Bonneterre Formation as discussed in case history number 2 illustrate this point. The data collection and data analysis techniques constitute the weak link in the analysis of mine inflow and district impact. The technology for char¬acterizing a mine site in the field has lagged behind the technology for mathematical simulation; we at¬tribute this development to the fact that computer modeling is relatively inexpensive compared to field data collection and analysis. On-site tests provide the best means of quan¬tifying hydraulic conductivity parallel to bedding and the storage characteristics of the unit. Pump tests with multiple observation wells provide the best information from on site tests. Hydrogeologie boundaries can be located from such multiple well tests. Multiport piezometers provide a means for determining the vertical potential in a single borehole. Borehole geophysics can facilitate the def¬inition of hydrostratigraphic units. Vertical hy¬draulic conductivity is difficult but not impossible to quantify with existing field test methods; labo¬ratory tests of cores fail to give a value represent¬ative of the field situation. The storage characteristics of a confined (artesian) hydro¬stratigraphic unit can be difficult to quantify when pumping changes the confined unit to an uncon¬fined (water table) case after depressurization and dewatering. Transmissivity and storage coefficient can be approximated to some extent for given field con¬ditions by computer modeling if enough is known about hydrogeologic boundaries. Modeling can be used in a trial-and-error approach to match transmissivity and storage coefficients to existing water level data corresponding to estimated discharge rates. A solution can also be obtained using a tech¬nique referred to as the inverse method. Unfortu¬nately, such a solution is seldom unique. Fracture flow models exist but practicality usu¬ally necessitates reversion to a basic Darcy flow model. Data requirements for fracture flow models could be difficult to fulfill where fracture aperture, spacing, orientation, and length are required. Ob¬taining such data at depth prior to mining would be impossible for any mine simulation in fractured media. We are of the opinion that most fractured media simulations can be accomplished using con¬ventional Darcy flow models by viewing the field problem on a macroscopic scale. The real challenge is to delineate hydrostratigraphic units properly in the field. The question of whether a broken-up fault zone is an aquifer or a barrier boundary is seldom simple. The fractures usually can be treated as an equivalent porous medium in either case. Only a few techniques exist for predicting un¬derground mine water inflow. These techniques fre¬quently are designed to evaluate shaft or tunnel inflow under steady-state head conditions in a sin¬gle layer rather than in multiple hydrostratigraphic units. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. The Malmberget Division of LKAB is located 70 km north of the arctic circle and has about 2000 employees. The dominating products are sinter feed concentrate and pellets. A general flow sheet for the operation is shown in Figure 1. About 20 percent of the ore body consists of hematite, which is mined separately and processed into sinter feed concentrate. That pert of the ore consisting of magnetite passes through a dry cobbing plant. The robbing process includes crushing, screening and dry magnetic separation. The entire cobbing product is used as feed for the wet concentrator. After rod mill grinding and magnetic separation the concentrated slurry is classified. The coarse fraction (+200 mesh) becomes sinter feed concentrate and the slime fraction after further ball mill grinding and magnetic separation, becomes pelletizing feed. A small quantity of the magnetite ore is processed into special iron-rich products in the the wet concentrator. Two types of pelletizing plant are used, shaft furnace and straight grate. This paper will deal only with experience gained at the straight grate plant.

Chemically, mica is a complex silicate of sodium, potassium and aluminum. There are no important uses of mica where the chemical analysis is important, except that in some uses of ground mica, the content of iron oxide present as an impurity must be kept to a very low limit. Muscovite mica is frequently found containing black and red "stain" as a homogeneous part of the books or sheets. In most cases this stain or impurity is magnetite or hematite. Some mica contains impurities deposited by infiltration. This is commonly a red stain, less often brown or white. The best mica is free from all such impurities, and the greater their content, the less value does the mica have.(1) It is because of these undesirable impurities that a large segment of the fine ground mica industry relies on weathered pegmatites and alaskite ores as a source of raw material. The mica concentrates obtained from these ores are relatively clean and require moderate beneficiation to meet color and density specifications. One need only to observe the stained and decrepitated condition of the mica recovered from mica schist to appreciate the challenge that processing this material presents. Despite these adversities there are several advantages to be gained by mining and processing mica schist ores. The mica content of these ores are considerably higher than the pegmatites and alaskite ores now being mined, often containing in excess of forty percent mica. The barite industry shares with its associates in the minerals industry the impediments of excessive federal and state regulations. We have learned to exist with the Organic Act of 1976, the Mine Safety and Health Act of 1966, and the Multiple Use Act of 1955. I do not mean to imply by the above that all aspects of mining legislation have been detrimental, however, each of you has been subjected to interpretative restrictions by federal or state bureaucrats. As frustrating and costly as this is to the barite industry, it is not the primary problem facing our segment of the industry at the present time. Our major difficulty today deals not with too much government regulation, but with the lack of a cohesive and consistent government energy program. This administration and those that have preceded it have dealt with intermittent energy crises on an emergency basis. If we remove the political rhetoric which has surrounded each of the more recent major crises, we can liken the action of our federal government to that of a rural volunteer fire department which devotes its entire efforts toward extinguishing existing fires rather than the developing of programs designed to prevent future fires. The lack of a comprehensive energy program has created an environment in which long range planning is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

At Getchell, Nevada a thousand tons per day mill for extracting gold from an ore containing orpiment and realgar was operated several years until early 1967. A cyanide process with a roaster was used in the processing of the ore. Mill wastes were contained in tailings ponds, in which the concentration of arsenic, currently, is one per cent or higher, Studies were conducted determining the effect of the tailing wastes on the Upper Sonoran vegetation of the area. Grid and line-intercept techniques were employed to obtain botanical informatics of the area surrounding the tailings ponds. Data of the per cent ground cover, species frequency, and plant vitality as a function of distance from the tailings ponds was collected. The data was compared to other botanical data collected from a control site outside the influence of the tailings ponds. In an attempt to isolate naturally occurring factors for varying plant communities from hose induced by factors derived from the close proximity of the tailings, soil cores were taken along the line-intercepts at intervals of 30 meters. The cores were analyzed for several compounds and elements needed for growth, or known to inhibit growth. Specific physical parameters of the soil samples were also taken. The paper describes the impact made by mill wastes containing large amounts of arsenic on the Upper Sonoran vegetation of the Getchell region. Described in detail are the techniques used to make the correlations between the plant communities and the influences of mill wastes.

Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Mineral exploration has evolved into a sophisticated science which uses powerful scientific tools to make mineral discoveries. In addition to their usefulness in performing mineral exploration, these scientific tools can assist the exploration geologist in assessing environmental conditions at exploration sites. During exploration, environmental data acquisition should focus on data collection efforts which can be easily integrated into exploration activities, and should provide information needed for pre-feasibility and preliminary engineering design studies. Environmental studies performed during exploration should also include an environmental liabilities audit and a fatal flaw analysis to assess whether there are any unresolvable environmental or regulatory issues affecting the project. Performing extensive environmental baseline studies during exploration and project evaluation is neither necessary nor recommended. This paper describes opportunities to integrate environmental data collection with mineral exploration activities. This paper also examines how political and communication issues can affect the outcome of permitting efforts, and recommends a strategy to improve the industry's ability to respond to political challenges and to communicate with the public. This strategy integrates technical and political issues, and implements programs to convince the public of the mining industry's technological achievements and its commitment to resource stewardship and environmental protection.

Volatility is a fact of life in the mining industry. Prices of and demand for mineral products are among the most volatile of those for any product. The volatility of these markets wreaks havoc on both corporate management and the personal lives of mining people. Yet, until recently, it has been difficult to assess the impact of volatility on business strategy. This paper discusses how mining firms can profit from market volatility through an operations strategy that stresses operating flexibility. The foundation for our strategy analysis is the observation that a mine is analogous to a stock option. Techniques based on those developed to value stock options have recently been extended to the field of mine valuation. The insights provided by option pricing are very valuable in the development of mine operating strategy.

A thorough geological engineering investigation is required before surface lands overlying abandoned underground mines can be safely recommended as building sites. The major problems confronting the geological engineer are assembling accurate geologic and mining information and developing an accurate rock mechanics model of the situation. A successful investigation requires a combination of technical expertise in rock mechanics and engineering geology tempered with practical engineering judgment. The results of a good study are not always favorable to the prospective builder.

Computer use has become an integral part of mine planning at Kennecott Copper Corporation?s Utah Copper Division, Bingham Canyon mine. Engineers are using the computer for development drilling calculations, mineralization grade interpolations, ore value summaries, long-range mining plans and short- range mining plans. The versatility of the computer has made it possible to explore many mining plan variations and to develop plans covering varying time intervals and production rates. This paper will summarize computer use in long-range mine planning, tell how short-range mining plans are prepared by conventional methods and discuss the development and application of short-range mine planning by computer.
