Let's review the economic factors in mill design. Talking about engineering economics in mill design reminds me of an old' saying "There are several ways to handle women but nobody knows what they are." I'm sure that the same economic factors do not apply to each of our mill designs, but for the sake of emphasis, it is well to review a few of them. They are so simple that we are apt to feel they are not important. Other speakers today are talking about the engineering factors of mill design, but I'm asking the question "Have we checked the economic factors involved in these designs? Have we checked the obvious? Many great discoveries have resulted from analysis of the things that appeared to be obvious all the time. What are some of these economic factors? Perhaps the most basic one is simply the value of minerals in place if minerals have value in the ground, they have value only because many important and different considerations add up to the probability that the minerals can be mined, beneficiated and disposed of profitably. The size formation and quality of the ore body, the distance from market, and the transportation available to the market area, depreciation rates, taxes, and the ownership interests involved are but some of the factors that must dovetail into the answer of profit, an answer prerequisite to hoped-for financing.

Technology to enhance safety during mine hoisting has been developed by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Assessment of current hoisting technology suggests that monitoring conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety advantages. Wireless data transmission schemes and a package consisting of sensors, batteries, and a charger mounted on the wire rope and skip have been developed. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in a full-size shaft are underway.

The scope of this subject is a broad one. The demand for a metal with high refractory properties, great strength at elevated temperatures and high nuclear cross section, has put tungsten in the foreground as: the most promising metal to fill some of these requirements. Recently developed techniques have made it possible to roll large tungsten sheet and-the availability of fabricated tungsten is already upon us. More and more, the demand is for purer and still purer metals. Tungsten is no exception. As technology improves, we are learning more about the effect of foreign elements in minor amounts upon the chemical and physical properties of metals. As equipment and technology improve, specifications become more rigid, and reasonably so. Pure metals have revealed properties hitherto unknown in metals produced by former technology.

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.

The advantages of using vertical pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers in the uranium industry have been known for some time. The advantages of the columns offer include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation and crud formation. This paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also discusses potential advantages of the pulse column in copper solvent extraction.

"There is no fast way to add more than 6.4 km (4 miles) of track, most of it underground, to the Sound Transit Link Light Rail system in the Seattle, WA area. But increasingly busy traffic through a number of neighborhoods made it necessary. That’s the challenge a joint venture of several tunneling contractors faced when starting its portion of the $1.9-billion Northgate Link Extension in 2013, and the project is still keeping it busy three years later. Completion will mean just a 14-minute ride from Northgate to downtown for an extra 60,000 passengers by 2030. The transit lines will join 57 km (36 miles) of new and under-construction light rail lines running north, east and south from Seattle.Voters tired of long commute times approved the project, a key part of Seattle’s regional mass transit system, in 2008. The extension is part of a plan adopted by the Sound Transit board in 1996 to connect the region’s major activity centers. The Northgate project is meant to relieve one of the area’s most congested traffic areas by connecting the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighborhoods to existing routes including downtown Seattle and SeaTac airport.Sound Transit dedicated more than a quarter of the project’s estimated expense — $440 million -— to general contractor JCM Northlink LLC to handle the tunnel segment. JCM is a joint venture formed in 2013 between Jay Dee Contractors of Livonia, MI, Frank Coluccio Construction of Seattle, WA and Michels Corp. of Brownsville, WI. The contractors regularly collaborate on large-scale projects and brought experience working on a different section of the extension they completed in 2013.JCM project leaders knew immediately that the schedule would be demanding. They had to work around the clock six days a week to meet deadlines. The extension runs through highly populated areas, meaning contractors had to follow strict city noise restrictions between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Plus, supervisors needed to manage the scheduling of nearly 250 employees to keep work running smoothly.“We had eight different operations and four different subcontractors trying to work in one tunnel,” said Chris Wood, JCM site project superintendent. “It’s important that we keep work linear. That’s the biggest challenge: keeping a path in and out so you can pour concrete, keep electricians and carpenters going, and accomplish everything else.”"

"The waters of Lake Superior flow into those of Lake Huron through the St. Mary's river. The rapids in this river are about half a mile wide and three-quarters of a mile long, in which distance the fall amounts to about twenty feet. Since this was the only obstacle to navigation between the west end of Lake Superior and ports on any of the other Great Lakes except Ontario, attempts were made many years ago to permit the passage of small boats from Lake Huron to Lake Superior by means of canals and locks. The first canal was built on the Canadian side of the river by the Northwest Fur Company in 1797-98. The lock was 38 feet long, 8 feet 9 inches wide and had a lift of 9 feet. A tow path was made along the shores for oxen to track the bateaux and canoes through the upper part of the rapids., The lock was destroyed during the war of 1812 by United States troops from Mackinac Island.The first ship canal, known as the State Canal, was built on the American side of the river in 1853-55, about 750,000 acres of land in Michigan having been granted by congress to a private company as a 'concession for its construction. This canal was more than a mile long, 65 feet wide at the bottom and 100 feet wide at the water's surface. It had two locks, each 350 feet long by 70 feet wide, with a lift of about 9 feet. The depth of water in the canal was about 13 feet and in the locks about 11 1/2 feet."

In the late 1950's a low-grade copper ore zone was outlined at the fifty-year-old McIntyre Porcupine Mine in Northern Ontario. Following this an independent copper circuit was installed in the existing gold mill. The nature of the operation decreed that capital expenditure be a minimum. To this end, in order to resolve the problem of storing and grinding two separate ores, it was decided to install a divider in the existing 4000 ton capacity fine ore storage bin and to replace ten conventional feeders with sixteen Mexican feeders. The article describes a successful application of the Mexican type feeder.

Mineral processing technologies are being used in the environmental arena for remediation and secondary recovery. Comminution and/or scrubbing for liberation, coupled with separation of the liberated particles, is known as soil washing. Other metallurgical unit operations have found application in remediation and recycling: size classification, gravity concentration, flotation, magnetic and electrostatic separation, eddy current separation, and liquid/solid separation. This paper presents specific examples of the use of these technologies to clean up contaminated soils and plant residues, and to recycle valuable materials from waste streams.

"Increasing attention to subway tunnel maintenance is being paid with the high speed development of urban rail transit system in China. A novel moving tunnel inspection equipment based on machine vision is developed in this paper. High resolution image acquisition system is proposed for tunnel crack and leakage inspection. The main components of this image acquisition system includes high speed CCD cameras, linear lights and high performance computer. To inspect the crack less than 0.3mm with a 3-5km/h speed in subway tunnel, we need to consider resolution and line rate of camera, pixels of cameras, range of inspection and illumination intensity of lights simultaneously. The optimization design is proposed to make the equipment more convenient for tunnel use. Entire tunnel situation can be detected and recorded in a single inspection process. This equipment has already been verified in Shanghai subway tunnel for defects inspection.1. INTRODUCTION In China, the quantity of subway tunnel has reached a large scale in recent years. Until 2014, there had been more than 2300km of subway tunnel in China which accounted for nearly three quarters of Chinese urban railway system (Zhang Chen,2015). In some metropolises like Beijing and Shanghai, most of the metro tunnels has already run over 20 years which within maintenance phase. This has brought about plenty of inspection work and maintenance work to guarantee the tunnel under the serviceability limit states. The increase of running mileage of subway tunnels in China has been displayed in Fig 1."

It is hypothesized that the Hotelling Valuation Principle (HVP) can determine the value of developed gold reserves using simple methods and easily obtained data. This paper reports the results of an empirical test of this hypothesis. Using publicly available data from North American gold companies, we obtained data for V, R, p, and c and ran a simple linear regression using equation (1.1) as the definition of the dependent and explanatory variables. By examining the value of the coefficients of the resulting regression equation, we can draw conclusion as to whether or not the HVP can be confident1y used as an estimator of the value of developed gold reserves.

On July 7, 1971, noise regulations for underground coal mines were implemented under provisions set forth in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. These same regulations now also apply to coal mine surface facilities. In August 1971, in anticipation of these regulations, the Bureau of Mines, through the cooperation of the mine operators, conducted extensive noise surveys in three coal cleaning plants. The survey was conducted in an attempt to identify those occupations where exposures would exceed the proposed regulations.

This paper is presented from the viewpoint of the mill operator and maintenance supervisor. Its purpose is to highlight the things that have been accomplished by the mill designers to lighten the load for the maintenance superintendent and to reduce the overall costs for the plant operator. The complexity of plant design, the civil and structural engineering problems encountered when the satisfactory maintenance layout is accomplished are appreciated, and the writer is fully aware of the complexities of these problems. However, it is not the purpose of this particular paper to dwell upon these problems, nor to emphasize or de-emphasize the problems of the civil, mechanical and electrical engineers. It is simply that the paper will attempt to review what these people have accomplished in spite of the many technical problems. This paper then is prepared with the operator and maintenance people?s viewpoint. What is their definition of design for maintenance? It is the writer's interpretation that the various design concepts which mean improved maintenance are such items as (I) maintenance areas, (2) laydown space for maintenance materials in specific maintenance jobs, (3) the inclusion of bridge cranes in the plant and specific design of the craneways to accomplish flexibilities for the cranes, and (4) the location of the piece of equipment to allow maintenance people to work around the equipment - - - this specifically includes the orientation of the particular piece of equipment.

on' January 6, ,1992, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule Making (ANPRM) for diesel particulate (DP). The ANPRM identified five areas where the Agency was seeking additional information to assist in the rule making process. These areas were exposure 'limits, risk assessment, consideration of other information, sampling and monitoring methods, and feasibility. The period for submitting information relative to the ANPRM closed July 10, 1992. Prior to issuance of the ANPRM, the agency was involved in conducting studies to evaluate sampling and control technologies and to gather information with respect to occupational exposures to diesel particulate in underground mining operations employing diesel-powered equipment. Since issuance of the notice, additional studies have been conducted to provide supplementary information in these specific areas. Results of these additional studies indicate that average DP levels in coal mines not using aftertreatment range from 0.9 to 2.1 mg/m3. Aftertreatment devices can reduce these levels by approximately 50 to 90 percent. Studies conducted in metal and nonmetal mines showed average DP levels ranging from 0.3 to 1.6 mg/m3.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated flotation hydrodynamics to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate. Fluid velocity profile measurements were used to characterize the hydrodynamics within commercial phosphate flotation cells and laboratory flotation cells. The effects of agitation, aeration, and pH on coarse phosphate recovery were measured in the laboratory flotation cells and correlated with the hydrodynamics measurements. Test results revealed that the agitation energy and aeration level had a significant effect upon flotation response. By optimizing these two parameters, 92 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a rougher flotation concentrate grading 28 pct P2O5?

At some surface and underground mines, control of ground-water inflow involves significant costs. These costs include the capital costs for installing a dewatering system, power and other costs to operate and maintain the system, and costs to treat and dispose of the water that is collected. To minimize these costs, design of a dewatering system utilizing wells has been formulated in terms of a nonlinear operations research problem using quadratic programming. Using this formulation, the locations, depths, pumping rates, and pumping schedules of wells are selected so as to minimize the total costs of the dewatering system.

Much of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Host producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectfully. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept Iles, Quebec.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.

An appropriate scale-up methodology is very useful for ball mill design and optimization of the grinding circuit. To date, the scale-up is based on the selection and breakage function method using lab mill data. However, a major drawback of that approach is that the charge motion in a lab mill is vastly different from that in a large industrial mill. Therefore, in the methodology proposed here, first the energy of individual collision in the mill is computed employing the discrete element method (DEM). Then the breakage of particles as a function of collision energy is studied in a separate experiment. Together, this information constitutes what is known as collision energy based population balance method. The appropriateness of this method is shown for 38-cm ball mill.
