The world is rapidly becoming more ?green? i.e. energy conscious. Since mining and mineral processing are massive energy users, the mining industry is seeking ways to reduce its energy footprint. In mining and mineral processing operations, energy is often the most expensive cost item. Comminution, i.e. grinding, is frequently the most energy-intensive step between mine and metal. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are being installed in a rapidly growing number of ?hard rock? mineral processing operations. In the energy conscious cement industry, HPGR grinding has been standard practice for decades. HPGR is known to be energy-efficient; the question is how energy efficient? How can the energy efficiency of HPGR be enhanced? This paper reviews recent HPGR applications for the processing particularly of copper, gold, platinum, PGM-Ni-Cu and iron ores. HPGR technology is discussed with respect to energy efficiency. The harder the ore the greater the energy savings are likely to be. Typical energy savings of 10?20% can be expected when installing HPGR vs. a SAG mill. Wipf(2005) showed why conventional Bond Work index tests on HPGR product is likely to under-estimate the energy savings that can be achieved by installing HPGR. Energy efficiency of HPGR is, however, ore-specific. The biggest energy savings of HPGR tested thus far is 9.5 kWh/tonne claimed for Vista Gold?s Mt. Todd gold ore from Western Australia, a savings of over one-third of conventional SABC comminution energy. Several commercial scale iron-ore pellet feed plants install HPGR for fine-grinding of concentrate to increase the surface area of pellet feed in a manner that reduces overall energy consumption. Energy-consumption in comminution is, however, only part of the energy savings benefit story. HPGR typically also reduces the amount of steel lost through wear of mill liners and media. Marsden(2008) showed that when the energy that would have been consumed to produce the steel that is saved by applying HPGR is factored in, then the overall energy savings of HPGR is considerably greater. Johnson et al.(1988, 2005) tested HPGR in a flowsheet in which energy savings of around 50% can be expected if HPGR product screen oversize is recirculated to the HPGR. Innovative flowsheets have been proposed by Rule et al.(2008) and by Morley (2008) which are expected to result in significantly increased energy savings. HPGR applied in flowsheets in conjunction with coarse ore separation devices, e.g. ore sorting or DMS to remove barren waste from HPGR feed promises significantly greater energy efficiencies. Fine-grinding and ultra-fine grinding of ore or concentrates in conventional ball mills results in energy consumptions that increase exponentially with product fineness. Wipf (2009) presented a flowsheet in which he proposed the installation of HPGR ahead of the Aerosion ?Disintegrator? for ultra-fine grinding of ores and/or concentrates. This dry grinding arrangement is expected to achieve ap80 = 7 µm using up to 100 kWh/t less energy than could be achieved by wet ball milling. Using conventional comminution, an ore might require grinding to p80 = 45µm (? 325 mesh), for example, to liberate the valuable components, e.g. magnetite, from gangue, e.g. silica. Inter-particle comminution in HPGR may break some ores along grain boundaries thereby liberating valuable minerals from gangue at a much coarser particle sizes. Early magnetic separation rejection of silica gangue liberated from magnetite by HPGR at coarser grain sizes could further reduce downstream comminution energy consumption.

ABSTRACT: Stiffness controlled test procedures performed with servo-controlled shear systems are the most versatile for simulating the wide range of boundary conditions expected in nature. Examples of a function controlled procedure in addition to dilatation controlled procedures are discussed for different characteristic behaviours. In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. A. Continuous miners, and their operation at Bosjesspruit Colliery J. D. INCH*, B.Sc. (Min.), M. I. Min. E. (Visitor) A brief description is given of the main types of continuous miner and their incidence of application in South Africa. Definitions and descriptions of the design parameters and components of the main cutting head are given. together with an outline of the modifications carried out to improve machine cutting performance. An account is given of experience with the application of water infusion to suppress airborne dust during continuous-miner operations. B. The selection and performance of continuous miners at Matla Coal by J. D. STONE, B.Sc. Eng. (Min.,) M.B.L. (Graduate) The reasons for the choice of continuous miners for the development of accesses and the winning of coal in a modern underground coal mine are discussed. It is shown that, at relatively low depths, the extraction rate as well as the costs are more favourable than those of proved total extraction methods. The selection of a continuous miner is largely dictated by factors such as production rate, capital and running costs, imported content and the extent to which local content and manufacturing are to be increased, manpower requirements, seam thickness, expected floor and roof conditions, and maximum cutting height. The present inherent shortcomings of continuous miners, such as inefficient continuous transportation of coal away from the miner and the lack of an infinitely variable traction to match the sumping speed with the feasible penetration speed, are pointed out. Specific problems encountered and the methods of solving them, as well as a planned trial with a heavy-duty continuous miner, are discussed. C. Continuous mining within the Tavistock Group of collieries I. D. BRUMBY.Dip. Min. (Visitor) The Tavistock Group of collieries is situated some 25 km south of Witbank. The three collieries comprising the Group are Tavistock Colliery, Phoenix Colliery, and South Witbank Coal Mines. Continuous mining is practised to some degree at all three collieries. This system of mining was introduced at Phoenix during 1976, South Witbank during 1978, and Tavistock during 1979. For the twelve months ended June 1979, continuous mining accounted for 1,7 Mt of the 4,5 Mt hauled from underground. All the continuous miners introduced to date have been of the rotary-drum type. D. Pillar extraction at Usutu Collieries using continuous miners by c. J. BEUKES(Visitor) In 1969 Usutu Collieries began pillar extraction with conventional mechanized equipment. This was very successful, but certain disadvantages could be eliminated if continuous miners were used instead. In 1976 the first continuous miner was introduced for this purpose; this proved so successful that a second unit was introduced in 1977, and pillar extraction by conventional equipment was discontinued. By the end of 1978, 1,3 Mt had been mined from pillar extraction by continuous miners. This paper describes the method in some detail, and indicates that the operational costs are lower than for conventional bord-and-pillar mining. The Rhodesian approach to the vegetating of slimes dams by J. R. C. HILL, B.Sc.(Agric.) (Visitor) and W. F. NOTHARD (Visitor) To prevent environmental pollution from mine dumps, it is necessary to stabilize them either mechanically or biologically. In the long term biological stabilization is more attractive because of its permanent nature. Initially, the basis of stabilization is in the correct siting and construction of the dump. The main toxic factors influencing plant growth on Rhodesian mine dumps are arsenic, antimony, copper, nickel, a high ratio of magnesium to calcium, excessive soluble salts, high pH, and Iow macronutrient content. Root-growth studies in culture solution and pot experiments are used to supplement information on the suitability of plant material obtained from replicated field trials on mine dumps. In addition to the selection of plants for toxic tolerance, it is advisable to provide multiple-layer protection with trees, shrubs, and grasses. Further, a range of different plant species gives greater biological stability. Protection must be provided for young plants against wind erosion and the abrasive effects of windblown sand. Planted wind breaks are preferred to mechanical forms; windrows of garden refuse make good wind breaks and at the same time introduce organic material to the dump and provide a good environment for seedling establishment. The use of artificial fertilizers and sewage effluent is recommended to hasten the development of a complete and protective plant cover.

To the members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy I have audited the annual financial statements of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy set out on pages 641 to 644 for the year ended 30 June 2006. These annual financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council members. My responsibility is to express an opinion on these annual financial statements based on my audit. Scope I conducted my audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. Those standards require that I plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the annual financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes: ?examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the annual financial statements, ?assessing the accounting policies used and significant estimates made by management, and ?evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. I believe that my audit provides a reasonable basis for my opinion. Audit opinion In my opinion, the annual financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Institute at 30 June 2006 and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice appropriate to the Institute. Supplementary information The supplementary schedule does not form part of the annual financial statements and is presented as additional information. In order to test the applicability of elastodynamic codes in the modeling of mining related problems, comparisons are made between seismic data and numerical analyses. The dynamic finite difference program WA VE is used for the modeling of a horizontal stope in a deep mine. The slip along a vertical fault situated within the positive excess shear stress lobe of the stope initiates seismic waves. The stope-fault geometry is modeled in both two and three dimensions. The three dimensional non-slip weakening WAVE analyses correlate well with Brune's analytical model. For accurate modeling of the peak particle velocities predicted by McGarr's empirical relationship, it is recommended that a three-dimensional stope -fault model is used, with the amount of slip weakening dependent on the magnitude of the event.

Hardmetals possess extremely high hardness and wear resistance, which render them ideal for applications such as metal-cutting tools, rock-drilling tools, and industrial wear-resistant parts like dies, punches, and seals. However, hardmetals are britle, and show poor resistance to impact and shock. They can therefore rarely be used unsupported, and it is common practice to attach hard metal working parts to a more resilient tool holder or support, which is normally made of steel. . . . Owing to the widely differing physical and mechanical properties of steels and hard metals, the Joining of one to the other is problematic, and the method used must be chosen with care. This paper reviews several methods available for the joining of hardmetal to steel, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each.

A high proportion of damaging rockbursts are thought to be underlain by seismic events that represent shear or rupture along planes of weakness (faults, joints, dyke contacts). Such events are controlled by shear stresses and friction properties along the plane. Excess shear stress (ESS) is a measure that can be evaluated numerically and that, in principle, can be used in an assessment of the possible magnitude and relative likelihood of seismic activity. Methods for the calculation of ESS in practical mining contexts, and for the estimation of the magnitudes of possible seismic event progressions, are briefly reviewed. The effects of variables such as depth, stoping width and, in particular, virgin horizontal stresses on general shear-type seismic hazards are investigated. Attempted back-analyses of two large rockbursts are described.

In February 1996 the OECD's Environment Policy Committee will commemorate its 25th anniversary with a fifth meeting at Ministerial level. Environment ministers will be taking stock of the progress made by OECD countries in protecting and managing the environment in that quarter-century, and sharing views on likely challenges and co-operative responses. Ministers can point to many important accomplishments. Scientific understanding and technological tools for establishing and monitoring risks to human health and the environment have improved dramatically since the early 1970s. All OECD countries now have in place comprehensive environmental legislation, supported by specialized institutions for policy design, implementation and enforcement. The results of these efforts are increasingly evident in the form of cleaner air and water, and improved protection of natural areas, notwithstanding the many complex problems that remain.

The Witwatersrand reefs contain gold, uranium, and pyrite in the following average concentrations: 0,001 per cent, 0,02 per cent, and 1,7 per cent respectively. The paper discusses the flotation of pyrite to produce a s,ulphide concentrate, reviews work done on the production of gold concentrates, discusses attempts to produce maximum concentrates, and closes with a review of processes for the simultaneous flotation of these three species. It is concluded that high recoveries of all three species can be achieved only if a rougher concentrate of perhaps 20 per cent of the feed (by mass) IS produced, and it is suggested that reverse leaching (leaching before cyanidation) of this concentrate, followed by a cleaning flotation step for the recovery of the pyrite, would be more efficient than the routes employed at present.

The ore mined at Black Mountain is of a complex nature, being composed of both magnetic and massive sulphides, which have greatly varying metal values. Because of this, there is need for a rapid method of assaying for the continuous monitoring and control of the process streams, and the Outokompu Courier onstream analysis system and the Proscon process-control computer systems have therefore been installed. Geostatistics In view of the continuing demand, the Department of Mining and Mineral Sciences in association with Special Courses Division, Department of Adult Education and Extramural Studies, both of the University of Leeds, will offer two further courses on A Practical Introduction to Geostatistics in 1981, each covering ten working days. The courses will run from 30th March to 10th April and 14th to 25th September.

A mineral economic analysis of South Africa's mineral-beneficiation industry, comprising both economic theory and case studies, suggests that the domestic market has proved to be a more effective vehicle for promoting the establishment of advanced beneficiation projects than the availability of domestic raw materials. Although the domestic market plays an important role in the promotion of beneficiation by providing a secure outlet for sales, its most vital role is in the development of technological and marketing know-how that may give South African beneficiated products the competitive advantage required to penetrate export markets. The real wealth of a country lies primarily in the skills of its people rather than in its natural resources, and the domestic market plays a pivotal role in the development of these skills.

Correlations for the critical velocity needed to hydraulically convey particles in horizontal, or near-horizontal, pipes are either explicitly dependent upon the shear stress imparted by the fluid upon the surface of the particle bed, or require a velocity and hydraulic diameter. Often such approaches are modified to account for pipe inclination by the introduction of simple factors. However, we assert that the physics that underpins the hydraulic conveying of particles in steep pipes (such as a directionally drilled oil well) is dissimilar to that which governs particle behaviour in horizontal pipes. In steeply inclined systems, a sliding sediment induces an upward counter flow and hence an autogenous contribution to the shear rate. The physics underpinning particle hydraulic conveying in steep systems is explored using the separation results of Laskovski et al.10

Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

In the second of a series of five colloquia with the theme Rescue 91 ..Survival Initiatives for the Mining Industry, the emphasis was placed on the harnessing of improved technology for the benefit of all the industry. The Colloquium was held at Mintek, Randburg, and attracted some 150 delegates and speakers from a cross-section of the industry. Eight papers were presented, and panel discussions were held to round off the morning and afternoon sessions. The purpose of the Colloquium was to allow mines and other groups to put forward innovative schemes in the management of technology that could be shared by everyone in their determination to ensure the survival of the gold-mining industry in the current difficult times. The influence of Harold Hotelling?s work in the field of mineral economics is both unusual and outstanding. In the 66 years since its development, theory surrounding the economics of exhaustible resources has only been significantly researched since the early 1970s. At that time a wave of research into the economics of exhaustible resources arose from the threat of global resource scarcity and continued into the late 1990s. Current East Asian and global demand for natural resources as well as mineral and metal commodities, has stimulated interest in the optimal and sustainable exploitation of exhaustible resources to the point that the subject is worthy of review. Hotelling?s theory and the assumptions that he made in establishing a model for the optimal exploitation of mineral resources at the industry level and at the level of the individual mine owner, are examined. He showed that the rate of increase inexhaustible resource prices should be equivalent to the market rate of interest and that in a market with rising prices the rate of extraction should be constant. In markets where demand is stable optimal exploitation requires that the rate of extraction should decline over time, while in a monopoly market he showed that the rate of extraction is retarded. In addition, the effects of cumulative production on costs and prices, the uncertainty associated with estimates of the resource stock, the impact of exploration and issues of intergenerational equity are examined. An analysis of the optimal price path, extraction costs and mineral rents at an industry level is presented as a model. An analysis of the rates of production and optimal benefits at the individual mine level including total, average and marginal costs on the optimal rate of production, is considered. Optimal extraction rates for a mine with a clearly defined concave positive cost equation vary according to the position on the marginal cost curve. The influence of discount rates and the size of the ore reserves on the rates of mineral extraction are also examined and could define the frontier of usefulness for the ?economics of exhaustible resources?.

This paper describes and sets in context the commercially proven uranium extraction processes. It also discusses some of the technologies that are currently being pursued with the aim of reducing costs and overcoming a number of technical issues that are faced by process designers and operators. In doing so, opportunities for the transfer of extraction technology from other industries/commodities are identified. The key processing areas that are examined include: ?The influence of mineralogy. The type of uranium mineralization and the nature of its association within a particular deposit will have a major impact on process route selection. Uranium minerals are classified according to their influence on extractive metallurgy. As the uranium price has risen in recent times, so opportunities are increasing for the recovery of uranium from less conventional resources such as phosphates and fossil fuels. ?The opportunities for employing techniques aimed at reducing the capital and operating costs of the overall process such as heap leach and beneficiation. Preconcentration by screening, gravity separation and radiometric sorting can potentially reduce the mass flow to the downstream leach and recovery plants. ?Purification or separation of uranium in carbonate systems. While it is possible to directly precipitate uranium from clarified leachate, the presence of impurities such as vanadium, molybdenum and others may dictate that ion exchange or selective precipitation is employed. Advances have been made in other industries in terms of improved ion exchange equipment aimed at reducing resin inventories and hence costs. ?Separation in acid leach systems. Earlier developments included the use of combined SX-IX systems (Eluex or Bufflex) and the introduction of continuous countercurrention exchange (CCIX). Column SX has found a ready application to uranium in view of the rapid extraction kinetics. With the renewed interest in uranium processing, efforts are being redirected towards further development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) as a means of driving down capital and operating costs. ?Extraction in a chloride environment. Australia and Namibia are desert countries where good quality water comes at a cost. However, both have access to saline water from either the ocean or subterranean aquifers. The issues associated with operating a uranium extraction operation in such environments is discussed. ?Extraction from less conventional sources. Recent price increases for U3O8 have resulted in a number of companies examining the recovery of uranium from sources such as fossil fuels and phosphate deposits.
