The paper points out that bord-and-pillar mining is the most important method of coal extraction in South African underground coal mines, and advocates that pillar design procedures should be refined to make more rational allowance for the differences in strength properties between various coal seams and roof and floor strata. However, any deviations from well-established design procedures must be based on sound engineering principles and reliable data on the strength properties of the seams and strata concerned. Recent information indicates that practices for the protection of surface structures against underground mining should be revised.

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI, However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI, In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

Stope backfilling in South African gold mines uses the coarser cyclone fraction of the gold tailings. The disposal of the overflow from the cyclones, which is finer and of higher moisture content than normal gold tailings, presents some problems. This paper describes an investigation undertaken to define the parameters that are required for a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the operation and stability of slimes dams built of such material. However, seeing the investigation was conducted on the slimes from only one mine, it is recommended that, until a wider range of data becomes available, tests should be conducted for each individual mine.

The Chamber of Mines Research Organization has been evaluating three membrane-desalination processes for use within the South African mining industry. These processes are electrodialysis reversal (EDR), tubular reverse osmosis (IRO), and slurry precipitation and recycle reverse osmosis (SPARRO). The evaluation of EDR and TRO is complete, and the operating costs (1988) associated with each process are expected to be about 50 cents per kilolitre for a plant of 50 l/s (4 Ml/d) installed capacity. The SPARRO process is still being evaluated. Pilot plant results, water Qualities, and expected capital costs are presented where appropriate.

Feasibility studies of the on-stream analysis of lead in mineral slurries by S. K. KAWATRA. P. Eng. (Canada). Ph.D. (Australia). M.Sc. (India) (Visitor) Instruments for the measurement of lead in mineral slurries by the use of isotopes can be based on the absorption of Iow-energy gamma rays, backscattering of beta particles, or X-ray fluorescence. The merits of each method are discussed, and the reasons for the selection of the beta-backscattering technique are given. A system using this technique has been designed, constructed, and tested on samples of concentrates from an industrial concentrator.

A colloquium on industrial minerals entitled' A Strategy for Growth in the Industrial Minerals Sector' was held at Mintek on 5th November, 1991, under the auspices of the Extractive Metallurgy Sub-Committee of the SAIMM. The SAIMM had not been previously active in the field of industrial minerals, and the programme was designed to appeal to the middle management of mining and manufacturing companies in the industrial-minerals field. n order to validate the borehole analysis valuation procedure commonly used in the South African gold mining industry, a simulated orebody was used to create borehole values which would serve as data for the procedure. After confirming the distribution, calculating the variance size of area relationship, estimating the block variance, and calculating a profit measurement for each set, comparisons were made to the known population parameters. Results show only one overall bias (in the estimation of the lognormal third parameter), which is carried throughout the analysis. The remainder of the analysis is unbiased, validating the procedure.

Surface treatments like laser shock peening (LSP) induce residual stresses penetrating up to 1 mm deep, surpassing traditional methods, thus significantly increasing the potential impact on materials prevalent in the automotive and aerospace sectors. Through extensive fatigue testing and fractography investigations, it was determined that LSP resulted in a fatigue life increase of over five times for aluminium alloy AA7075-T6 and titanium Ti-6Al-4V. Increased fatigue life was also noted in AISI316 stainless steel, which showed increases in fatigue life of 1.7x. While fatigue life in all cases improved, the efficacy of LSP was shown to be material dependent.

The stability of pillars is analysed on the assumption that pillars shed load in a stable manner if the slope the strata load-deformation relation is steeper than that of pillars in the post-peak regime. Concepts of local stiffness, mine structural stiffness, and critical stiffness are discussed. Procedures are described for the determination of strata stiffness for various pillar layouts by use of the available boundary-element computer programs. The postpeak stiffness of pillars is assessed from the available data relating to the post-peak load-deformation relationship and width-to-height ratio. Stability analyses are carried out by the contrasting of strata stiffness with post-peak pillar stiffness. It is shown that the strata stiffness becomes unacceptably small for a stable yield-pillar layout when the span exceeds about 5 times the depth. The strata stiffness is found to increase, thereby increasing the stability, as the span-to-depth ratio, number of pillars, and percentage extraction are decreased. It is also found that the stability in a yield pillar becomes difficult to achieve when al the pillars in a layout are in the descending part their post-peak load-deformation curve

Technosol production from mine waste, following amendment with additional organic residues, to provide healthy and functional topsoil is an advantageous alternative to the long-term dump disposal of mine waste. Minimising the legacy of mine waste and supplying soil for mine site rehabilitation contributes towards more sustainable mining practices. Following the creation of the physicochemical structure of the soil from appropriate mixtures of coal waste with low sulfur content, physical ameliorants and nutrient sources, the inoculation of Technosols with active microbial suspensions may accelerate the decomposition of organic matter present and ensure nutrient availability for plant growth through active nutrient cycling, particularly of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. In this paper, South African ultrafine coal waste was used as the main mineral matrix, and malt residue was used as source of organic matter and nutrients. In order to evaluate the effects of Technosol inoculation, five microbial treatments were used, including the addition of: commercial grade efficient microorganisms (EM Prosoil), anaerobic digested sludge supernatant from treating brewery waste, and ‘tea’ extracts prepared from compost, vermicompost and soil native to the mining area. Growth experiments were carried out using Eragrostis teff, commonly known as teff, a grass typically used for the rehabilitation of mined areas in South Africa. Preliminary results showed that Technosols inoculated with microorganisms performed better in terms of nutrient availability and plant growth. Varied performance was observed as a function of the microbial inoculation applied. This suggests that the inoculation of Technosols with appropriate microorganisms may be recommended to accelerate nutrient availability assisting plant growth during the initial establishing of the Technosols. Technosols continue to show promise as an alternative to both mine waste disposal and the burrowing of topsoils for mine rehabilitation. Coal produced in underground mines is transported to the surface by means of conveyor belts throughout long roadways. The combustion of belts puts a large number of employees at great risk. Underground collieries differ from other underground mines -due to the combustible nature of the product. The most prevalent cause of belt fires in underground coal mine is spontaneous combustion due to oxidation of the coal, which also enables the conveyor belt to burn over time. In 2014, a belt fire in an underground coal mine in Manisa-Soma, Turkey caused 301 fatalities. A study has been conducted on this accident for approximately 3 years, consisting of combustion tests in a purpose-built research gallery, comparison of the test results with mine records of the accident, and CFD modelling of the mine environment. The intensity of the fire was sufficient to redirect the air flow underground, causin large amounts of toxic gases to fill almost the entire mine in approximately 15 minutes. It is recommended that CFD analysis be used in planning emergency action strategies in underground mines.

The difference in the magnetic properties of minerals is the basis for magnetic separation. All minerals can be generally classified as ferromagnetic (strongly magnetic), paramagnetic (weakly magnetic) or diamagnetic (non-magnetic). Magnetic separation can be conducted dry or wet. The majority of the applications of wet magnetic separation in the mining industry are based on the wet drum magnetic separator. The wet drum magnetic separator has been in use for over 50 years and its design is based on a rotating drum installed inside a tank. Inside the drum are stationary, permanent magnets arranged in an arc to provide the magnetic field. These magnets can be of the ceramic ferrite type providing a low intensity magnetic field or of the rare earth type providing a high intensity magnetic field.

Details are given of three legal controls for the pollution of the air, the water, and the land, together with brief histories of the developments leading up to these controls. Attention is drawn to the fact that legal action may be instituted against a mine under common or other laws where pollution causes proveable damage or loss. It is suggested that an international conference should be held to define the philosophies and principles on which to base not only the necessary legislation for environmental control but also the machinery by which the controls can be administered.

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) held their fifth successive annual seminar at Observation City, Scarborough, in Perth on 15th November, 1990. The title of the seminar was 'Strategies for Grade Control'. The Seminar attracted 158 delegates, including 10 speakers. In addition to geoscientists, the attendees included mining engineers, metallurgists, and mining analysts. The welcoming address was given by Rob Duncan, Chairman of the Westem Australian Branch of AIG, who said there is a strong demand for this type of seminar in Western Australia (WA). It helps geoscientists to keep up with former colleagues and to keep abreast of technical developments.

(Visitor) The paper discusses work at the National Institute for Metallurgy on the evaluation of measuring techniques for the automatic control of free acid in leaching. of the ratio of ferric to ferrous ion in leaching, of pH in liquid-liquid extraction. and of uranium in loaded solvent. Commercially available instruments. and the modifications that have been made to adapt them to South African uranium plants, are also described.

Discussion of the above paper by G. J. van JAARSVELDt Mr Ortlepp's paper is important, and deals with a subject towards which much controversy and insufficient basic scientific logic, in my opinion, have been directed. He attempts to remedy some of our unscientific popular misconceptions, and for this we thank him. However, I regret to say that experience has shown that some of his statements cannot be allowed to pass unchallenged. Author's reply Mr Van Jaarsveld's contribution is welcome because it provides an opportunity for me to clarify certain points that were perhaps not adequately explained in the paper.

An ERR-based methodology is presented for use in the re-assessment of the performance of stabilizing pillars, taking into account the effects of fracturing that can occur in pillar foundations under conditions of high stress. It is shown that the damage in the foundations of under-designed pillars can cause up to 30 per cent increases in ERR compared with the ERR for pillars with unfractured foundations. Despite this reduction in assessed performance, stabilizing pillars are still generally found to result in substantially lower ERR levels than alternative methods of reducing ERR, such as the use of stiff backfill or backfill ribs.
