Middleburg Ferrochrome (MFC), a company in Samancor Chrome, commissioned a new ferrochrome smelter in March 2009. This is a 60 MW DC-arc furnace with a DC power supply for the smelting of Transvaal chromite ore fines. With the benefit of 12 years' experience with this technology while operating a 44 MW DC-arc furnace, MFC mitigated all known challenges and considered up-scaling risk in the new plant, which had a rapid ramp-up to full power in 02 of 2009. Good operating practices, as made possible by robust equipment selection, including a thyristor rectifier set of proven technology, and operation with optimal slag chemistry, leads to a safe and effective plant operation. With the optimized furnace design and a correctly sized power conditioning system, using only standard (static) harmonic filters and a correctly sized smoothing reactor, the arc furnace is not a 'dirty load' for the utility, staying well within IEC limits for power quality. A patented arc compensation system is installed and allows for full arc position control (to compensate for magnetic field induced arc deflection) so that a symmetrical crucible is maintained, significantly benefiting refractory life. The principal benefits gained from the MFC process is the fact that ore fines are processed, without metallurgical coke, and higher chrome recoveries are achieved compared to other smelting technologies when using a DC open arc for smelting. Unbridled mining operations can have a serious negative impact on the surroundings. With the recent increased awareness of the need for environmental conservation and the resulting advances in environmental control, the mine planner has new tools at his disposal for the successful implementation of mining projects while avoiding negative environmental effects. This paper discusses the environmental strategies adopted in the planning and commissioning of a trial underground coal mine. The minimization of negative environmental effects is demonstrated and, where applicable, environmental benefits are examined.

"Drought conditions and the possible lack of sufficient raw water supply are a constant reminder to the Southern African diamond miner of the need to minimize raw (new) water input while maintaining or expanding mine throughput.Since water input volume is directly related to water output (loss) volume, mainly to the tailings, it is obviously beneficial to dewater the tailings as much as possible. However, this may not always be as easily achieved as first thought. Owing to the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the unique chemical profile of each raw water source, dewatering of the slurry is not a standard process that can be applied equally across the entire diamond industry.This paper presents a first-step strategy that kimberlite diamond mine operators should consider and apply to meet and exceed their watersaving targets. Introduction A common metric for measuring water use efficiency in a metallurgical plant is the amount of raw water used per ton of head feed treated (m3/t). The metric includes all water recycled from the dewatering process and from the tailings storage facility (TSF), and the only inputs are tons of ROM ore and cubic metres of raw water make-up to replace water lost to evaporation, seepage, and lock-up at the TSF (Figure 1).The volume of new raw water available to the process is not unlimited and a maximum monthly allowance is typically set during the mine permitting process. Consequently, if the volume of water lost exceeds the volume of new water available or alternatively, in times of drought where the allowable volume is unavailable, the plant has no other option but to reduce throughput.However, if the plant operator is able reduce the volume of water lost to the TSF, the plant will have additional capacity to either increase tonnage throughput or sustain nameplate capacity during periods of severe drought. The obvious conclusion, therefore, is to reduce the volume of water lost to the tailings by improving the efficiency of the dewatering process (typically gravity thickening) simply by increasing the density of the tailings being discharged. In practice, however, the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the chemical profile of the raw water source used imply that at some mine sites, solid/liquid separation (or settling) of tailings slurries at the dewatering process is more easily achieved than at others. In these cases, simple practical steps such as firstly improving the flocculant reagent make-up and dosing control, and secondly focusing on thickener discharge control, are the only requirements for enhancing water recovery at the dewatering circuit. At other mine sites however, solid/liquid separation of the tailings may not be achieved at all, in which case efforts to increase water recovery by improving reagent dosage and thickener control would be fruitless unless the colloidal properties of the thickener feed slurry are modified."

Traditionally, the term `total system' design applied to comminution conjures images of a design that addresses the usual business and operational drivers, including health, safety and environment (HSE), capital cost, operating cost, throughput and product size. In terms of the physical process, the mine to customer type studies also exemplifies an approach that satisfies a normal `total systems' approach. As an industry there are drivers that are forcing a re-consideration of what we regard as our total system. This modification of drivers will require changes in approach and implementation to provide the best solutions. Some of the major changes that impact the drivers are shortage of skilled personnel, changing social attitudes to remote mine site work, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), quality of available orebodies and geographical location of new mine sites. One approach to the challenges presented by the changing business environment is to expand the system envelope around comminution to ensure that comminution, in its widest sense, helps to meet the new realities. Background to the new drivers and constraints is provided and some of the appropriate responses are examined in relation to the impact on the total system.

Tuzla Coal Basin in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the largest coal area in the State. Regional mining industry sensed the need for mining machinery database development in order to achieve easier planning purposes and equipment selection for open cast mines in Tuzla Coal Basin. Several databases for mining machinery used on the bituminous deposits, i.e. on brown coal and lignite mines, were developed at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering, Tuzla. System Development Method was used as the approach to the database development, generating relational structure of database. First database was established for trucks and was presented as simple table, drawn and filled on the paper sheet. In the next phase, data were stored in spreadsheet type software (Quattro Pro and Excel). Lately developed database is Bucket Wheel Excavator database designed in MS Access. Two concepts, spreadsheet and Access, were integrated into one large database, enabling manipulation of hundreds of data at one place. Required adaptations of existing database in MS Access, enables Access to be used as an integration resource. Database is designed to reserve free memory for input data for mining equipment not considered so far, such as spreaders, crushers, belt conveyors, tripper cars, etc. New, integrated database, at this stage, can be imported to any type of commercial or individual software where needed. Debswana together with ADP as their design partner have embarked on an RDP project at Jwaneng Mine. The objective of the project is to install a 2 million ton per annum mineral processing plant that will fast track the recovery of diamonds from the Debswana tailings resource to ensure maximum return on investment for the company. Due to the prevailing economic conditions Debswana has had to review the way they used to build plants in the past and consider simple, fast and effective ways of doing things. The rapid deployment plant concept is therefore the most suitable means of achieving this objective. Debswana is also considering an operating partner who will operate far more efficiently and cheaply compared to the larger more cumbersome and less agile Debswana.

Already about one-third of South Africa's coal is mined at depths exceeding 100 metres. Almost all this mining is done by the bord and pillar method. Conventional design procedures call for ever larger pillars as depths of workings increase, resulting in the loss of large amounts of coal and reductions in productivity. Barrier pillars are in general use to ensure against large collapses. The presence of these strong pillars would allow a more efficient design of the bord and pillar layout to yield improved extraction ratios by using smaller, yielding, pillars between the bords. Knowledge of the complete load- displacement curves for such pillars is a prerequisite for the design of such a system. A 100-MN, stiff jacking system for measuring the complete load-displacement curves of pillars with cross-sections of up to 2 m X 2 m is described. The jacks are installed in a slot cut across the central plane of symmetry of a pillar, thereby ensuring that the stress distribution in the pillar during a test, especially at its contacts with the roof and floor, is identical to that caused in a similar pillar by convergence across the seam. Preliminary results in the form of complete load-displacement curves for test pillars of about 1.5 metre square section are given.

Regular analysis of different streams is important for the control of hydrometallurgical processes. Various physical and physical-chemical methods are applied for this purpose. Many modern methods require costly equipment and are subject to interferences. Therefore, redoxtitration methods remain of interest. The use of different types of oxidizing and reducing agents as well as redox indicators enables many cations and anions to be rapidly and accurately analysed. Sometimes redox titrations require the prior preparation and addition of masking agents. Selective, sensitive and low-cost methods of redoxtitration of copper and SO2 in plant conditions are described.

The Tati Activox® Project will be the first full-scale implementation of the patented Activox® process (The Tati Activox® project was deferred in 2008. Please refer to the Norilsk Nickel press issue on the topic for more info). The process was developed by Norilsk Process Technology and has been tested on Tati mine sulphide concentrates in laboratory, pilot and demonstration plant scales and demonstrated its viability. There are inherent risks to the final scale-up of the process from the demo plant and one of them will be investigated in this paper. Compartment 1 is designed to leach approximately 77% of the total nickel leached. For this reason agitation requirements in the first compartment of the autoclave are reviewed. An attempt is made to minimize the process and mechanical risks associated in achieving oxygen mass transfer into the slurry solution. The agitator powers for oxygen mass transfer are calculated using empirical correlations and compared to demonstration plant testwork. The resulting gassed power per unit volume (P/V) is higher than most commercial autoclaves and raises uncertainty on the viability of using such high unit power inputs. Additionally, there is concern about the ability of the autoclave shell to withstand and support the higher loading of large agitators. An alternative solution to designing for the increased P/V is assessed in which the number of compartments within the autoclave is reduced from 5 to 4 by removing the compartment wall separating compartments 1 and 2. This results in an enlarged first compartment containing 3 agitators instead of 2. Therefore the compartment 1 oxygen demand is supplied through 3 agitators, which lowers the P/V per agitator. The reduction in the number of autoclave compartments raises the potential for short-circuiting the mean flow pattern by slurry particles. Short-circuiting and low velocity zones could result in a lower recovery of metal and localized hot spots, respectively. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis was conducted to quantify these concerns and also to evaluate further design considerations. The results indicate that the proposed design change to 4 compartments affects short-circuiting. The impact of increased short-circuiting on the overall autoclave recoveries is not quantified, however; it is expected to be negligible based on testwork done in the Tati Demonstration Plant and similar modifications made to another operating autoclave. The CFD analysis also suggests that there will be no low velocity zones within the compartment.

Selective photo reduction, using the semiconductor TiO2 under UV irradiation, has been investigated as a possible recovery and/or separation method for the PGM's rhodium, palladium and platinum. The effect of pH value and concentration of the sacrificial reducing agent (ethanol) on the rate of reduction of Rh (III), Pd (II) and Pt(IV) ions have been determined separately for these ions as well as for some mixtures. Conditions favourable for the reduction and adsorption (or precipitation) on TiO2 have been established. It has been found that already deposited Pt or Pd metal promotes reduction of Rh (III) ions at a pH value where it would not otherwise be reduced. A method for the separation of a mixture comprising Rh (III), Pd(II) and Pt (IV), based on photo reduction and adsorption on the TiO2, is proposed.

"The extreme depths and consequent expense of drilling and sampling the gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand Basin have resulted in limited data being available for estimation of grade ahead of the mining face. There is, however, a wealth of information from mined-out areas of these deposits. This estimation challenge resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation.AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) utilizes a technique termed macro cokriging (MCK), which allows for the integration of the limited advanced borehole data with the large chip sample data-sets from the previously mined-out areas by adopting a Bayesian geostatistical approach. The MCK process, in short, is the estimation of mixed support size data together with the application of four-parameter distribution models.The gold value estimation for the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) on the AGA TauTona Mine is used in this paper as a case study of the process and to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique through production reconciliation. The current method has been proven over the last 20 years and is now an established part of the Mineral Resource evaluation process within AGA.IntroductionOwing to the extreme depths of the goldbearing reefs at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Witwatersrand operations and the prohibitive expense and time involved in drilling boreholes to the required depth, only limited drilling and sampling data is available ahead of the mining face. Whereas traditional estimation techniques are interpolative, within the Witwatersrand the estimation is primarily extrapolative, with the majority of the data being sourced from the mined-out areas. This significant challenge to estimation resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation and evaluation."

Centrifugal pumps are the workhorse of hydraulic conveying systems but their performance is derated when viscous non-Newtonian fluids, such as pastes and/or coarse solids are present. The reduced performance for purely viscous Newtonian fluids may be calculated using techniques such as the Hydraulic Institute method, but similar deration for non-Newtonian fluids is not so easy to apply. As part of the AMIRA P599 project investigating high concentration suspension pumping, centrifugal pump tests were systematically conducted on a wide range of non-Newtonian coarse particle suspensions. Suspension sup to 38% v/v of coarse particles with mean diameters in the range of 1.1 < d50< 3.4 mm suspended in carrier fluids with dynamic yield stresses of 0 < t?< 17.2 Pa and shear thinning indices in the range 0.35 < n< 0.79 were examined. Techniques such as the Hydraulic Institute de-ration method require a characteristic shear rate to be assigned before application with a non-Newtonian fluid, and a method based on pump geometry, fluid rheology and flow rate is proposed. This method predicts the dramatic characteristic reduction in head at low flow rates that is often observed and explains why larger pumps are relatively insensitive to this form of head deration. Head deration due to the presence of coarse particles in non-Newtonian carrier fluids is seen to follow similar trends to that of Newtonian suspensions and often dominates the total deration procedure.

South African underground hard rock mines are typically managed using measurements made daily, weekly or even monthly of key parameters such as face advance, readiness to blast, blast success, temperature or dust levels. Safety and health can be greatly improved if a real-time measurement system can inform decision making. To enable this vision of widespread sensing, communication and decision support, CSIR has developed an open standard architecture for communication of sensor data, and a reference implementation using that standard. The standard is called AziSA, which means ?to inform? in isiZulu. AziSA provides an architecture that allows for connection of any type of sensor and that is particularly suited to wireless sensing. On the safety side, the CSIR is developing a suite of sensors specifically around the risk of rockfalls. Sensors such as an electronic replacement for the barring tool, or a thermal sensor that can detect loose rock, can already be used to identify potential hazards in the hangingwall. When these sensors are combined with location and time information in a single database, it becomes possible to build maps of risk and to extrapolate risk into unmined areas. It is also easy to confirm that routine safety procedures like barring are actually taking place. In the future, it is proposed that entry inspections will be made using remote techniques that will not place an individual miner at risk. While miners will still be required to bar or place support, they will do so with a clear idea of which portions of the hangingwall are safe, and which present risk. On the health side, if a network such as AziSA is deployed in the stope, it becomes much easier to monitor the condition of individual miners. The work strain experienced by miners can be monitored through heart-rate sensors, and their core body temperature can be monitored using various novel techniques discussed in the paper. Additional sensors can be added to quantify worker exposure to hazards such as noise or dust. Individual sensors allow for people who are at an unacceptably high risk of developing heat disorders to be treated timeously, and they also allow for team management based on objective measures. Over a longer period, position sensing and environment monitors, or personal dosimetry, provide a powerful management tool to prevent workers from being overexposed to hazards, and to confirm that management instructions are being followed. Cost-effective sensing in the stope is a major challenge, but one that can be overcome through technology like that used in AziSA. Sensing provides opportunities both to make immediate interventions when workers are exposed to unacceptable risk, and to manage the long-term exposure of workers to hazard.

Generally, regrind circuits are used to increase the degree of liberation of value minerals which are fed to flotation circuits. At the regrind circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex, four ball mills are in closed circuit with their hydrocyclone clusters. In the initial design of the plant, feed and underflow percent solids, and pressure drop of the hydrocyclones were 39% and 65%, and 15psi, respectively. Over the years, due to a reduction in the feed grade from 1.17% to 0.67% and changes in the operational conditions, the feed rate to each hydrocyclone cluster has decreased from 401 to 70t/h and consequently the pressure drop, feed and underflow percent solids have reduced to 4psi, 17% and 25%, respectively. The main objective of this research was to audit the feed solids concentration and pressure drop of the hydrocyclones and make the necessary modifications based on the Plitt’s model. The results of sampling showed that water recovery to underflow was 59% which was higher than normal values. By reducing the number of operating regrind mills from 4 to 2, the feed rate to each mill increased. After this modification and taking necessary measures in the plant to implement the new operating approach, the pressure drop, feed and underflow percent solids increased to 18psi, 28% and 58%, respectively. The water recovery of the hydrocyclones underflow decreased from 59% to 12%. These changes in addition to increasing the circuit efficiency saved 1000 kWh energy and decreased ball consumption by 925 ton/year because of reduction in the number of operating ball mills. Discussion: L. T. Campbell Pitt: When Mr Garrett and I discussed the design and construction of plugs and bulk head doors to resist great water pressures in mines about ten years ago, we visualized an emeregeny when there would be no time for site preparation. We could not however, anticipate a problem of such magnitude and urgency as the one described in the paper under discussion. The paper very clearly describes the flooding and the measures taken to save the mine. The complete flooding would have been a national disaster. The account of the combat between man and water reads like the account of a military operation. It was an endeavour which achieved success because there was a master plan, tenacity and, in fact, heroism. The paper is of necessity a long one. In my contribution I will mention some historical facts and factors that I believe have relevance to the flooding and the saving of the mine. It is of great satisfaction to me to have been one of the two initiators of a new approach to underground plug design and construction. The investigation was taken over by a Chamber of Mines Committee which combined our early work with further research and the resulting data had a significant bearing on the West Drie emergency plug designs. The final plug length was correctly based on the requirements to obviate leakage. A plug to have structural strength only would have been very much shorter but so ineffective as to have become a waste of labour, material, and in consequence, wasted the limited time available to prevent flooding of the whole mine. The figure of 75 lb per sq in. sheer stress provided a very ample margin, in my opinion, but under the very difficult site conditions and the limitations of plug material suitable for the very unusual construction, justified such a figure. There must have been considerable temptation to reduce the safety margin due to the urgency to complete and commission the plugs, but it is much to the credit of the directors of this operation that nothing less than a safe design was permitted. In about 1945 Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, which was then mining in to the West Driefontein area to assist in early development, decided to protect themselves from a possible inrush of water from the latter mine. A bulk head door was accordingly designed and installed on 2 level between 1945 and 1948 at 4,218 ft below surface. Since West Driefontein paid for it, Gold Fields consulting mechanical engineers collaborated with their colleagues of Rand Mines who completed their design after a few modifications were agreed. This door was never used to prevent an inrush into Blyvooruitzicht but the exercise was very useful to Gold Fields when the high pressure doors initially installed on 10 and 12 levels between Nos. 2 and 3 shafts to enable isolation of one section of the mine from another were designed. At that time the capacity of West Driefontein to cope with an inrush of water was comparatively small because the storage in stoped areas and the installed pump capacity were much less than in later years. These doors together with others of the same design were later moved to the lower levels served by sub vertical shafts. In addition, doors to prevent flood water entering the pump chambers on 18 level were installed at each end of that level, and designed for a head of 360 feet so that water would have to reach 16 level before the pumps were flooded. All these doors were called upon to hold water and it is reported that only a small plug in one of the doors and a 4 in. dia flanged pipe joint failed. The lesson is that in these cases the smallest details warrant as much attention as the major ones. That these were the only equipment failures when so much depended on equipment, is very much to the credit of design engineers, both of the Gold Fields head office and companies who supplied both mechanical and electrical equipment. Until I had read the paper I wondered why the policy of isolation by bulk head doors was not continued as the development moved eastward towards the Bank Compartment and particularly when it pierced the Bank dyke. The reasons have been given in the paper. It was unreasonable to expect provisions to be made to counter the remote contingency that the large installed pumping capacity and mine capacity to store water would be exceeded during a peak inrush. When pumps were being considered for West Driefontein, it was decided that the Gold Fields standard underground main pumps at that time of 1 million gallons per 24 hours would be too small. Three alternatives were considered. 1. Very large units that would require underground sub assembly and dismantling of both pump and motor. 2. The largest pump and motor that could be conveyed as a complete pump or motor from surface to the pump chamber. 3. Pumps of higher speed to reduce dimensions and weight. It was decided to adopt alternate 2 because of avoidance of transporting pumps in parts and assembling underground. Alternative 3 was not favoured because high speeds would have introduced problems of more exact rotor balancing. I believe the decision was correct and in the crisis enabled comparative easy transport of pumps and motors to surface for overhaul and, if required, transfer to other pump stations. In the 1960s it was suggested that the volume of stope convergence, and hence the rockburst hazard, could be reduced by the emplacement of backfill. Recent advances have facilitated the placement of large quantities of backfill underground, and a reassessment of its potential benefits as part of a regional support strategy is now timely. In this paper the principal criteria of effectiveness of backfill are taken to be its impact on face energy release rate (ERR) and average pillar stress (APS) levels, and maximization of acceptable ore extraction ratios. The possible effects of backfill on excess shear stresses (thought to modulate large seismic events) are also briefly reviewed. Analytic solutions describing backfill properties and their impact on ERR and APS in certain idealized geometries are also presented, and compared with the results of an extensive suite of computer simulations, in which parameter sensitivities are explored. Results indicate that a regional support strategy is required at depths exceeding 2 km in order to maintain acceptable levels of ERR, and backfill ribs can on their own fulfil this role at depths less than 3,3 km. At greater depths use of stabilizing pillars becomes imperative, but here too supplementary backfill ribs can reduce ERR and APS levels and permit significant increases in ore extraction ratios.

(9.2) However, we know that the centre sample w, gives more information about the block value than the corner sample w2. In the example studied in § 8.4, where w, and w2 were considered to be points, we found that of (w, to W) was nearly one third smaller than o2E (w2 to W), therefore when estimating W one should give more weight to w, than to w2. In general, when evaluating a block W from a set of n samples ws, where WS = l w;w2; ... wn1, a better estimator of µw can be obtained if we give different weights to the sample values, depending on the size and the positions of the samples. Some desirable properties of such an estimator µw are: ? It should be a linear function of the sample values xi: n µw = bi xi (9.3) =t where bi = weight given to sample x . ? It should be unbiased, i.e. its expected value should be equal to the true block value: E [µw - µw] = 0. (9.4) ? The mean squared error of estimation of µw should be a minimum E [(µw - µw)2] = a minimum. (9.5) The estimator which satisfies these properties is a minimum variance, linear and unbiased estimator, and is known as the kriging estimator. The corresponding error of estimation is the kriging error. This estimator is also known as the BLUE (for Best Linear Unbiased Estimator) estimator. This was named by Matheron in acknowledgement of the early work of Krige&apos;s in the optimization of the evaluation of the South African gold mines. The general standard of engineering in South Africa will, it is believed, reach new heights after the establishment of the S.A. Council for Professional Engineers (SACPE) in February, 1969. The Council is being created to establish standards for professional engineers in this country and ensure that the quality of engineering is maintained at a high level. In terms of the Act of Parliament under which the new Council will operate, all consulting engineers will have to be registered if they wish to remain in private practice. While engineers who are not in private practice cannot be compelled to register, it will be in their interests to do so, according to a statement issued by Mr M. R. Gericke, chairman of a Shadow Council which is at present preparing for registration and drafting the requirements for registration. Registration is seen as an important move towards maintaining the quality of engineering in South Africa. Engineers will be encouraged to strive for professional status by gaining the necessary qualifications and the varied range of experience required by the Council before registration. All work done by registered professional engineers will have to conform to certain minimum standards. A spokesman for the Council has urged all engineers to ensure that they apply for registration when the Act comes into force in February. The Council is also anxious to gain the co-operation of employers in ensuring that the holders of professional engineering posts will be registered. Full information regarding registration will be sent to engineers throughout South Africa early this year, and announcements will appear in the press.
