Mine ventilation in the German coal mining industry is concerned mainly with problems of thermal environment arising from greater depths and with increasing emission of methane gas. The development of computer techniques over the past ten years for solving these and ancillary problems is reviewed. The emphasis from a planning and control point of view falls mainly on ventilation network calculations, temperature predictions and advance estimates of methane emission.

The Namakwa Sands heavy mineral deposit is located along the West Coast of South Africa and the mine is a world class producer of high quality zircon, ilmenite and rutile concentrates from essentially unconsolidated marine and aeolian sands of Cainozoic age. The objective of this study was to characterize rutile with respect to distribution, grain size, textures, colour and mineral chemistry within the Namakwa Sands orebody with the aim to explain its overall poor recovery. A representative suite of heavy mineral concentrates from various sections of the orebody and stages in the recovery circuit has been investigated microscopically and by means of SEM-EDS and LA-ICP-MS. The rutile grain size distribution displays a wide range and is directly related to its variable chemistry and consequently density. In placer deposits such as Namakwa Sands, mineral sorting is a function of hydraulic equivalence, and high density grains are smaller than the lighter grains when deposited under similar conditions. Grain size is also a function of sediment maturity, and the highly mature red aeolians and (RAS) component of the deposit has a coarser grain size than the less mature orange feldspathic marine sands (OFS). The above primary characteristics of rutile are responsible for the loss of the coarse-grained fraction during screening and, given the empirically determined relationship that increased substitution elements reduce conductivity, also during electrostatic separation. Provenance studies using geothermometry have shown that the heavy mineral suite has been sourced mainly by the proximal medium-to high-grade Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex. The positive relationship between substitution elements and temperature of formation explains their high concentration in rutile of this deposit. The heterogeneity of rutile, produced by the combination of a high temperature primary source and the typical marine-aeolian placer genesis is deposit specific and unfortunately not conducive to high recovery levels in the current Namakwa Sands beneficiation circuit.

Eng.), Ph.D. (Cape) (Fellow) The theoretical and experimental results of a study of centrifugalmills are reviewed. Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

ABSTRACT: The proposed paper is aimed at analysing the failure of a steep cliff slope that, in the past, was exploited for open pit mining operations. A volume of over 400,000m3 of gneissic aplitic rock was involved in the slope failure. An evaluation of possible failure mechanisms is given, based on a structural description of the rock mass, a mechanical characterisation and on computation methods. The block theory and limit equilibrium techniques for sliding and block toppling were applied and a comparison is given with the result obtained by using DEM models. RESUME: Le document proposé vise l’analyse des mécanismes de rupture d’une falaise qui a été intéressée dans le passé par une mine à ciel ouvert. Un volume supérieur à 400.000 m3 de aplite-gneiss a été concerné par la rupture de la falaise. Le document fournit une évaluation des possibles mécanismes de rupture, basée sur une description structurale de l’amas rocheu, une caractérisation mécanique et des méthodes de calcul numérique. L’analyse a été développée à l’aide de la théorie des blocs et de la technique de l’équilibre limite, soit pour le glissement que pour le basculement des blocs, et une comparaison avec le résultat obtenu par application des modèles DEM a été effectuée. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die vorgeschlagene Arbeit zielt darauf ab, den Einsturz einer steilen Felswand zu analysieren, an der in der Vergangenheit eine Mine im Übertageabbau betrieben wurde. Der Einsturz betraf ein Volumen von über 400000 m3 an Gneis und Aplit. In der Arbeit ist eine Einschätzung des möglichen Mechanismus angegeben, der zum Bruch geführt hat, und sie basiert auf einer strukturellen Beschreibung der Felsmasse, einer mechanischen Charakterisierung sowie auf der Anwendung von Berechnungsmethoden. Angewandt wurden die Blocktheorie und die Methode der Gleichgewichtsgrenze für das Abrutschen und Kippen von Blöcken. Darüber hinaus wird ein Vergleich mit den Ergebnissen angestellt, die unter Verwendung von DEM-Modellen erzielt wurden.

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid.

Optimizing the catalytic performance of multimetallic nanoparticle (NP) catalysts demands a concrete understanding of their design, while preferentially deploying wet chemical synthesis procedures to precisely control surface structural properties. Here we report the influence of reductants such as hydrogen-rich tetrabutylammonium borohydride (TBAB) and carbon monoxide-rich molybdenum carbonyl (Mo(CO)6) on the shape and morphological evolution of Pt-based binary (PtNi and PtCo) and ternary (PtNiAu and PtCoAu) nanostructures derived from a homogeneous solution of aminebased surface active agents (surfactants) in a high boiling point solvent. We successfully synthesized nanostructures exhibiting well-defined and composition-controlled surfaces deploying a one-pot synthetic approach. The development of the surface properties was, however, observed to be alloyspecific. The resultant highly monodisperse alloy NP with narrow size distributions and facet-oriented surfaces are expected to display enhanced functionality as catalysts for utilization in specific chemical reactions.

Professor R. P. Plewman graduated with a B.Sc. in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943, after which he had two years of military service. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg attended St Andrew's College in Grahamstown before proceeding to the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Eng.) degree cum laude in mining and metal. lurgy at the end of 1942 and was awarded the Chamber of Mines Scholarship and Gold Medal. Dr M. G. Atmore, Deputy Technical Director of the Anglo American Corporation of South Mrica, is also Manpower and Education Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Mrica and a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. Mr D. A. Vi1joen attended Queen's College, Queenstown, and then Rhodes University, where he gained a diploma in chemistry and a B. Comm. degree. Mr B. E. Protheroe, C.Eng., obtained a degree in Physical Metallurgy at University College, Cardiff, and an M.sc. in corrosion science from Swansea University. Mr N. J. Devine holds a B.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering and a G.DE Mining Engineering, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr Oskar Steffen graduated as a civil engineer at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1961, and obtained his master's degree in 1963.

Preconcentration of precious and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, the development and the operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. Ore preconcentration designates an operation consisting of sorting an ore to reduce the quantity of waste material sent to the concentrator. It can be seen as rejecting waste material as much as possible, without compromising the recovery, or as the recovery of as much valuable metal as possible into an optimum mass yield. Benefits of preconcentration are multiple: grinding energy savings, costs reduction, lower environmental footprint, extension of the reserves, etc. However, all of these benefits do not apply simultaneously and are not applicable to each ore type. Technologies employed for preconcentration are highly dependent on ore properties, especially on the particle size at which the gangue is liberated. Thus, from coarser to finer particle sizes, technologies such as screening, ore sorting, gravity separation (Dense Media Separation (DMS) and jigs) and coarse flotation could be used for the rejection of liberated gangue. The difficulty starts when a benchmark is needed to select a suitable technology, especially for low-grade gold deposits. This paper presents the challenges of comparing lab-scale technologies (DMS versus jig) for gold preconcentration. The experimental data will show to what extent comparing two lab-scale gravity technologies for gold preconcentration can be challenging. An attempt to evaluate the energy savings by assessing the hardness of the tailings after gravity separation will also be presented. An understanding of wear in systems conveying solids is extremely important from the standpoints of design and economics. The lifetime of any bulk solids-handling system depends on the type of solids present and the operating parameters of the transportation system. The relationship between wear in backfill pipelines on South African gold mines and the transportation system's operating parameters is well understood. However, the effect of the transported solids on the pipe wear is less well understood, because of an inability to characterize particle sharpness. The sharpness of the particles, together with their size and hardness, is responsible for the aggressivity of particles, or their ability to cause damage and wear. This paper presents a novel method for the characterization of particle sharpness. The results presented rank particles according to the sharpness of their surfaces.

This paper describes the development of a monitoring architecture that allows for continuous monitoring of the process of mining, the underground environment, the state of the rockmass and its response to mining. The system is based on an open standard and is non-propriety. It allows for dense sensor arrays in the workplace, wire less communication to the closest power line, and TCP/IP communication to a central server. Continuous monitoring and quantification of the appropriate parameters allows a mine to optimise its mine process; to dynamically access the safety and health risk to people and equipment; and to quantify exposure to potential heath hazards such as dust, gas or noise. Current application examples of continuous monitoring include an application to optimise drilling and blasting thought fragmentation monitoring; an application of wireless sensor network-based monitoring in to provide early detection of potential rockfalls; and a trail to continuously assess the gold grade at the shaft through correlation with radioactivity. It is unlikely that a single monitored parameter will provide adequate knowledge of the assessed risk or even an optimisation approach. Multiple parameters are being combined using cognitive science tools such as Bayesian theory and other statistical methods to improve the accuracy and relevance of, for example, risk quantification. The decision maker is not confronted with massive amounts of raw data but rather with a single knowledge statement such a probability of failure, a human physiological strain index or an optimisation index.

Since the early 1970s, Korea has constructed many large-scale tunnels and underground storage caverns in response to the rapid industrial development. The rock mechanics engineers have accumulated valuable experiences in the area of underground space technologies. But they still face technical challenges in environmental and safety aspects. To discuss those challenges in Korea, a brief engineering description of underground space projects including oil and gas storage, food storage, pumped storage power plant, transportation tunnels, waterway tunnels, and radioactive waste disposal is presented. Mechanical and hydrological stability analyses of the storage caverns in Korea are also introduced. Depuis le début des années soixante-dix, le développement industriel rapide en Corée a entraîné la construction de nombreuses galeries et cavernes de stockage souterraines. Les ingénieurs de mécanique minière ont donc accumulé des expériences précieuses dans le domaine de la technologie de l’espace souterrain. Cependant, ils font toujours face à de nombreux défis techniques en ce qui concerne les aspects de l’environnement et de la sécurité. Pour présenter ces défis en Corée, l’étude présente décrit les projets d’espace souterrain, y compris le stockage de pétrole et de gaz, de nourriture, centrales de stockage pompé, tunnels de transport, tunnels navigables, et évacuation des déchets radioactifs. Des analyses de stabilité mécanique et hydrologique des cavernes de stockage en Corée sont aussi présentées. The formula developed by Salamon and Munro in 1967 has been used for the past 22 years in the design of bord-and-pillar workings in South African collieries. This paper re-assesses the formula In the light of Its past performance and examines the effect of mining method on coal-pillar strength. An account is given of the extension of the formula so that it can be applied beyond the empirical range for which it was derived, and the advantages of the extended formula (the squat-pillar formula) are described.

ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. RESUME: Dans le sud de l’Ille du Gran Canaria (Espagne) on a détecté des couches d’argile gonflante dans l’intérieur des formations de roches volcaniques fonolitiques, à la profondeur autom des 500 m, avec épaisseur de 1 à 3 m. On a perforé deux tunnels (de longueur 1.500 m chaque un) dans cettes zones (igniumbrités et argiles gonflantes), chantier qui comenza pendant les 70’. La construction on a influencé pour des phénomènes d’expansivité et de décompression. Dans cette communication on présente les problèmes presentes, les études de chantier et théoriques realicés et l’optimisation numérique développé pour dimensionner le revêtement.

This paper reports on what appears to be the first discovery of prehistoric mica-schist mining in southern 4frica. The mine concerned was found in a location very rich in rock art that is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Kalahari. The authors conclude that the oval pieces of mica schist that were found at the mine site were used by Khoisan peoples to scrape fatty tissue from hides that were to be cured. Radiocarbon datings seem to indicate that such ovals were used for at least 20 000 years.

This paper, which adopts a philosophical approach, attempts to analyse the contribution that the computer is capable of making in geological analysis, financial evaluation, and mine project control. Also examined are some reasons for non-utilization of these capabilities. As with most computer associated problems, the cause is primarily human and not mechanical. The paper gives one numerical example of the analysis of geological data and one of the evaluation of mine-design data. The values used in the examples are intended only to emphasize certain points and are not necessarily reproducible.

ABSTRACT: The paper presents investigation of carboniferous slates from the Trojane hilly area performed on series of samples of equal material. The results of static loading tests show that carboniferous slate is heterogeneous and yields on slate layers. Where that kind of heterogeneity is distinctive the strength results are essentially lower of commonly tests results. The results of dynamical loading tests show that the slate surfaces have the essential meaning for the stability of the material. When those surfaces are moistened the material become unstable. RÉSUMÉ: L'article présente une épreuve des ardoises carbonifères de la région montagneuse de Trojane sur une série des échantillons des matériaux identiques. Les résultats des tests de charge statique montrent que l'ardoise carbonifère est hétérogène et qu'elle cède sur les couches d'ardoise. Quand l'hétérogénéité est distinctive, les résultats de stabilité sont essentiellement plus bas que les résultats obtenus par des tests ordinaires. Les résultats des tests de charge cyclique montrent que les surfaces d'ardoise sont très importantes pour la stabilité du matériel. Quand ces surfaces sont mouillés, le matériel devient instabile. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel präsentiert die Forschung von Karbonschiefersteinen im Bereich des Bergland Trojane, ausgeführt durch Serien von Proben aus den gleichen Erdmaterial. Die Resultate der statischen Belastungsprüfungen zeigen, das die Karbonschiefersteine heterogen sind und die Schieferflächen nachlassen. Wo bei dieser Art der Heterogenität die Festigkeitsergebnisse wesentlich niedriger sind als bei gewöhnlichen Testergebnissen. Die Ergebnisse der zyklischen Belastungsprüfungen zeigen das die Schieferflächen eine wesentliche Bedeutung für die Stabilität des Erdmaterials haben. Wen diese Schieferflächen befeuchtet sind, wird das Erdmaterial unstabil.
