Previously, the grade of ore at the shaft head was taken to be equivalent to the grade measured in the faces by means of chip sampling. The tonnage mined from the stopes is determined from survey volumetric measurements. Estimates of shaft head grade and tons include the grades and tons of waste, development ore, sweepings from old areas, and other sources, not all of which are sampled. The tonnage of ore delivered at the shaft is often estimated using skip factors. These factors are subject to manipulation and not all the skips are filled to the same level. Consequently, both the grade and tonnage of ore delivered at shaft head are subject to a measure of uncertainty. For many years, these uncertainties have led to disputes between shaft managers and metallurgists over the reconciliation between shaft tons and grade and plant tons and grade. These problems are compounded when several shafts feed a central processing plant. Shaft bonuses and a shaft?s profitability are affected by poor gold allocation methods. Without measurement of the grade and tonnage from all shafts, a poorly performing shaft could benefit at the expense of the other shafts. In order to improve the measurement of grades and tonnage at the shaft head, which is the custody transfer point between the mine and surface operations, South African mining companies have developed a methodology to measure the mass of ore from each shaft using rail weighing equipment, and the run-of-mine grades delivered from each shaft using cross-stream (go-belt) sampling. Harmony Gold Mining Company has implemented the rail weighing and go-belt sampling methods for their shafts. This paper deals with the statistical tests on the procedures and control measures that are in place to establish confidence in the gold allocations. The metal accounting system for examining the allocations follows the first principle of the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting Code of Practice namely ?The metal accounting system must be based on accurate measurements of mass and metal content. It must be based on a full check-in check-out system?. The check-in is mass and grade of run-of-mine ore and the check-outs are the plant input grades and the recovery and residue from the plant. The balances between check-in and check-out are the subject of the statistical analyses, which have been conducted using the classical statistical tests and procedures that are generally used in all fields of endeavour. It is concluded that the gold allocation procedures that rely on go-belt sampling and rail weighing of ore from shafts has been successfully implemented, and that the system, which has been in operation at Harmony since 1993, has won general acceptance from stakeholders, with the gold allocations being perceived as being fair to all. Apart from the on-mine issues of bonuses and fair allocations, accurate metal accounting assists in the broader issues of generating accurate production figures for management. An added benefit of weighing and sampling ore at the shaft head has been that shafts now have daily moving average grades, which are used for grade control. The go-belt sample at the shaft head is the first accurate sample of production in the value chain from face sampling to gold bullion. We report on further progress in improving seismic locations by using the so-called double-difference method (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 and Waldhauser et al., 1999). Double-differences are obtained either using picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. The double-difference method provides for much improved relative locations by reducing the effect of the errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each geophone. Further improvements are obtained by using known locations, such as blasts. One of the difficult problems that we have overcome is that of finding the best “weights” for the time corrections. Experience obtained in relative moment tensor inversions by Andersen (2001) suggests that use of median corrections is both more stable and more accurate, even while the locations of the individual events is based on weighted least-squares minimization. A hybrid location program with known reference events has been developed. Tests on a synthetic data set gave relative locations that were much less widely spread than the absolute locations. The use of known event coordinates (blasts) moved the relative locations back towards the real locations. These results are confirmed in preliminary analysis of data from a mine. The absolute locations are adjusted using blast events restricted to the line of tunnel development. Inter-event distances are distributed in a power-law fashion that suggests that the relative location accuracies are improved by a factor of three or more. Nous rendons compte des progrès faits dans l’amélioration des locations de séismes en utilisant la méthode appelée de double- différence (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 et Waldhauser et al., 1999). On obtient les double-différences soit en utilisant des temps d’arrivée choisis soit des mesures variées de différences de temps obtenues de doublets de forme d’onde. La méthode de double-différence fournit des locations relatives très améliorées en réduisant l’effet des erreurs dans la vitesse d’onde des trajectoires de rayon entre chaque évènement et chaque géophone. D’autres améliorations sont obtenues en utilisant des locations connues, telles que les coups de mine. Un des problèmes difficiles que nous avons surmontés est celui de trouver les meilleurs coefficients de pondération pour les corrections de temps. L’expérience obtenue dans des inversions de phases tensorielles relatives par Andersen (2001) suggère que l’utilisation de corrections médianes est à la fois plus stable et plus exacte, même lorsque la location des évènements individuels est basée sur minimisation pondérée de moindres carrés. Nous avons développé un programme hybride de location avec des évènements connus pour référence. Des tests sur des données artificielles ont donné des locations relatives qui étaient beaucoup moins étendues que les locations absolues. L’utilisation de coordonnées d’évènements connus (coups de mine) a ramené les locations relatives vers les locations réelles. L’analyse préliminaire des données d’une mine a confirmé ces résultats. Les locations absolues sont ajustées en utilisant des évènements de coup de mine restreints à la ligne du développement du tunnel. Les distances entre chaque évènement sont distribuées comme par loi exponentielle ce qui suggère que les degrés d’exactitude des locations relatives sont améliorés par un facteur de trois ou plus. Wir berichten über einen weiteren Fortschritt, die seismische Positionen unter Verwendung der zu sogenannten Doppel-Unterschied-Methode (Spottiswoode und Milev, 1998 und Waldhauser et al.,1999) zu verbessern. Doppel-Unterschiede werden entweder mit ausgewählten Ankunftszeiten oder verschiedenen Messungen von Zeitunterschieden erreicht, die von den Wellenformpaaren erhalten werden. Die Doppel-Unterschied-Methode liefert viel verbesserte relative Positionen unter Verringerung der Auswirkung von Fehlern in der Wellengeschwindigkeit von Strahlengängen zwischen jedem Fall und jedem Geophon. Weitere Verbesserungen werden erreicht, indem man bekannte Positionen, wie Sprengungen verwendet. Eines der schwierigen Probleme, die wir überwunden haben, ist jenes des Findens der besten "Gewichte" für die Zeitkorrekturen. Die Erfahrung, die in den relativen Momentspannerumkehrungen von Andersen (2001) gewonnen werden bietet den Schluß an, daß der Gebrauch von mittleren Korrekturen beständiger und genauer ist, sogar wenn die Positionen der einzelnen Fälle auf der bewerteten Reduzierung der Methode der kleinsten Quadrate basiert. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a microcomputer-based mineral modelling system that enhances analytical capabilities of the agency. It draws upon the extensive data base previously developed for the Bureau's Availability studies. The model is first formulated as a generalized network flow optimization problem, the optimal flows from which are fed into a transportation algorithm. The goal of the modelling system is first to fulfill prespecified demand at the minimum opportunity cost and second to identify feasible, optimal trade patterns. The system facilitates the analysis of policy issues on a real-time basis and supports the Bureau's mission to assess mineral resources.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

In this study, sulfide-type inclusion morphologies of a Ca-treated hot-rolled wheel steel, Grade-X, were investigated. The specimens taken from the hot-rolled products of Grade-X heats were studied. The size and distribution of elongated sulfide inclusions were examined for the heats of different S levels. Elongated sulfide inclusions were either not observed or rarely encountered when ladle analysis S content was below 50 ppm. The size and relative abundance of sulfide inclusions were reported to increase markedly when the S composition was greater than or equal to 70 ppm and the Ca/S ratio was less than 0.50. The effect of Ti addition (0.010?0.020% Ti) on sulfide-type inclusion morphologies was then investigated for heats having a sulfur content higher than 50 ppm. Addition of Ti was found to have a partial effect on decreasing the size of sulfide-type inclusions under real steelmaking conditions. Keywords Sulfide inclusions, Ca-treatment, titanium.

An account is given of the development of ferritic stainless steels since their discovery in the early years of this century. The alloys became very widely used in the 1950s, the market during that decade being driven strongly by a demand for automobile trim made of ferritic stainless steel. The production of ferritic stainless steel declined as a proportion of the total at the end of the 1950s as consumer preferences changed. However, the market is now growing strongly again, this time driven by a demand for oxidation-resistant alloys for motor-vehicle exhaust systems. The tonnages produced, applications, and market shares of the various alloys are discussed and compared. Trends in world stainless-steel production, product forms, technological development, and usage are examined.

"Parts manufactured through power metallurgy (PM) typically contain pores that can be detrimental to the final mechanical properties. This paper explores the merits of 3D X-ray computed tomography over traditional microscopy for the characterization of the evolution of porosity in metal injection moulding (MIM) and direct powder rolling (DPR) products. 17-4 PH stainless steel (as-moulded, as-debound and sintered) dog-bone samples produced via MIM and Ti-HDH strips (as-rolled and sintered) produced via DPR and were analysed for porosity. 3D microfocus X-ray tomography (XCT) analysis on specimens from both processes revealed spatial variations in densities and the existence of characteristic moulding and roll compaction defects in agreement with traditional microscopic microstructural analysis. It was concluded that micro-focus XCT scanning can be used to study MIM and DPR parts for the characterization of the amount, position and distribution of porosity and other defects. However, the majority of the sub-micron sized pores could not be clearly resolved even at the highest possible instrument resolution. Higher-resolution scans such as nano-focus XCT could be utilized in order to fully study the porosity in MIM and DPR parts. IntroductionMetal injection moulding (MIM) is a novel process, which combines the advantages of powder metallurgy (PM) and plastic injection moulding. MIM has found widespread applications in the cost-effective production of high-sintered density small parts with complicated shapes and mechanical properties equivalent to those of wrought materials (German and Bose, 1977; Machaka and Chikwanda, 2015; German, 2013). There are four basic processing steps involved in MIM, namely; feedstock preparation, injection moulding, debinding and sintering. These steps are discussed in greater detail elsewhere (Machaka, Seerane and Chikwanda, 2014; German and Bose, 1977; Machaka and Chikwanda, 2015; German, 2013).Feedstock preparation involves mixing metal powder with a carefully selected composition of polymeric binder materials at a specific temperature. The feedstock is then granulated and injected into a predefined mould die with the desired shape. The part produced during the moulding step is referred to as a ‘green’ component. The green component typically contains no porosity since the spaces between adjacent powder particles are readily filled with the binder materials (German and Bose, 1977; Li, Li and Khalil, 2007). Debinding is the systemic removal of the binder components by chemical, catalytic, or/and thermal means while maintaining the shape of the component. The part produced after the debinding step is referred to as a ‘brown’ component. Debinding is known to be the source of porosity in brown components (Ji et al., 2001; Tsai and Cen, 1995). Finally, the brown debound part is sintered to full or nearfull density (Sotomayor, Varez and Levenfeld, 2010). The sintering step and associated densification closes up the majority of the pores. Sintered MIM parts are typically sintered to high density (95–99%) and retain an irreducible amount of residual porosity (Barriere, Liu and Gelin, 2003; German, 1990)."

The structural competence of mesh- and fibre-reinforced shotcrete was investigated in two series of tests on full-scale panels. It was found that uniformly distributed loading was marginally less demanding than point loading, mesh reinforcement was superior to fibre reinforcement, Dramix fibre and Melt Extract fibre were similar in reinforcing characteristics, and 30 mm to 35 mm was an optimum fibre length. Furthermore, the consistency of the fibre content could not be assured on practical mining sites, and an average fibre content of about 1,5 per cent was the maximum that could be obtained for fibre lengths not exceeding 35 mm. Also, owing to its greater flexibility, shotcrete reinforced with diamond mesh was preferable to fibre-reinforced shotcrete in mining excavations subject to squeezing conditions. In view of the difficulties associated with assuring the consistency of the fibre content in mining applications, it appears that the sophisticated attributes of fibre-reinforced shotcrete can be effectively exploited only in civil-engineering applications in which quality assurance is subject to explicit contractual control. Load-deflection curves, together with measurements of compressive stresses in the surfaces of some of the panels, enabled the ultimate flexural strength of reinforced shotcrete to be rigorously formulated, and rigorous design procedures for shotcrete subject to bending and direct thrust to be developed. The application of the procedures is demonstrated in a practical design case in which the moments and thrusts in a tunnel lining are determined in a numerical analysis of the interaction between the lining, the surrounding rock, and the rock-reinforcing system.

The aim of this study was to develop an in-house tensile testing procedure that would yield accurate and reproducible parameters as input material properties into computational models for numerical simulations of the mechanical behaviour of TM380 mild steel. To achieve this objective, we reviewed the ISO 6892:2009 tensile testing standard along with reported good practice guidelines. Tensile tests were conducted on a dog-bone shaped TM380 mild steel specimen with strain gauges attached on either side, to monitor alignment and measure strain, using three different types of tensile testing machines. Parameters quantified included yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity. The values of these parameters were found to be in agreement with the values supplied by the manufacturer's specification and showed minimal variations between laboratories. Thus it can be concluded that the tensile test procedure used resulted in accurate and reproducible results. The strain values calculated as per standard were in disagreement with those determined from extensometer and strain gauges and resulted in lower elastic modulus values. This confirms that the current testing procedures require the use of long-range strain gauges or extensometer to determine the strain. A chemical analysis was conducted to verify the specification by the manufacturer. The specimen was found to be fairly homogeneous with minor sulphide inclusions. The micrographs reveal a pearlite and ferrite structure typical of mild steel, and the fractographs show a dimpled surface typical of ductile fracture, which is an attribute of mild steel.

Over the last several decades mineral concentrate long distance slurry pipelines have been installed and successfully operated. Nearly all were installed via the buried construction method. Their record of depend ability and economy has been well proven. However, these systems operate in regions where seasonal soil frost penetration is shallow or non-existent. In recent years interest in long distance mineral concentrate pipelines in northern cold regions has been increasing. For cold regions one must consider seasonal temperatures and soil frost penetration in order to ensure reliable operations through the year. Herein a case study is developed where heat balance and temperatures for small and large diameter long distance slurry pipelines are compared. The study development is as follows: ?Rheological properties are analysed over range of temperatures from near freezing (4ºC; 39ºF) to relatively very warm (40ºC; 104ºF). ?Then assuming similar climatic conditions, soil properties, and pipeline length, a study is carried out for two pipeline diameters, namely: a small diameter (nominal8 inch; 219.1 mm) and a large diameter (22 inch; 558.8 mm). ?The study focus is on maintaining slurry temperature above freezing throughout the pipeline length by illustrating a decision based on burial depth versus coating the pipeline with insulation.

There are no manuals or handbooks for budding mill superintendents or process plant managers. Most who obtain this level of responsibility have gained their training from watching the good and bad of their predecessors and the successful ones have themselves graduated from the school of hard knocks. This paper attempts to provide some helpful guidelines and direction for those who aspire to better manage a mineral processing facility. The authors have 20 years combined experience in senior management roles at nine different mineral processing operations in Australia and overseas, covering gold, base metals and mineral sands. This summary of tips and pitfalls will hopefully benefit future leaders in mineral processing and metallurgy.

GENERAL BUSINESS The Chairman reminded members of the forthcoming visit by the Branch to the Dudfield Works of the Anglo-Alpha Cement Company, to take place on Wednesday 16th April. TALK ON ROCK MECHANICS The Chairman called upon Mr J. W. Wilson to address the meeting on the subject of the practical applications of rock mechanics to mining. Mr Wilson used a slide projector to present his subject in a most interesting and instructive manner which eventually resulted in much useful discussion taking place. The Chairman then called upon Mr A. von Holdt to thank the speaker. CLOSURE After thanking the speakers, the Chairman thanked members and visitors for their attendance and closed the meeting at about 10 p.m., after which refreshments were served.

Industrial production of titanium occurs via the batch-wise reduction of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) with a reducing metal, being magnesium in the Kroll process, or sodium in the Hunter process. In the search for low cost titanium, the CSIR is developing a continuous process to produce titanium powder directly via metallothermic reduction of TiCl4 in molten salt, dubbed the CSIR-Ti process. The move to a continuous process has been attempted by a number of organizations, but was until now always met with failure, due in no small part to challenges inherent in the process chemistry. The reaction between TiCl4 and the reducing metal can occur directly, when TiCl4 or any titanium sub-chlorides present, comes into contact with suspended or dissolved reducing metal. The reaction can also occur indirectly, without any physical contact between the reacting species, via an electronically mediated mechanism. The reaction mechanism via electronic mediation can cause TiCl4 to react at the outlet of the feed port, rapidly causing blockages of the TiCl4 feed line. The electrical conductivity of the metal reactor can also cause the electronically mediated reaction to favour the formation of titanium sponge on the reactor walls and internals, rather than titanium powder. Various methods were investigated to overcome the problem of blockages in the TiCl4 feed line, e.g. mechanical removal, sonic velocities, dilution of the TiCl4 and the use of ceramic feed lines. This article discusses problems experienced with the continuous feeding of reagents, and various methods attempted are shown and discussed. Information is also given on the morphology, chemical composition and suitability of the final titanium powder for powder metallurgical application as presently produced by the CSIR-Ti process. The economic incentives, basic operation and general system benefits of Palabora's computerised truck dispatching system are considered.

The utilization of computer assisted tomography (CT or CAT-scan)as general non-destructive examination (NDE) technique and as research tool for scientists in South Africa, is limited due to the relative unavailability or nonexistence of such specialized analytical equipment. Many medical hospitals are equipped with X-ray CT scanners for the diagnostic examination of patients but do not easily allow paleontologist or other scientist to utilize their very expensive equipment. As from 2003, Necsa hosts the South African Neutron Radiography (SANRAD) and tomography facility where neutrons from the SAFARI-1 nuclear research reactor and their penetrating power as well as X-rays as a complementing tool, are utilized in many R&D applications. This facility is being made available to HEI and specifically utilized by postgraduate students as part of their studies and/or by industry on an ad hoc commercial basis. The capability of these radiation imaging facilities at Necsa will be demonstrated in areas such as paleontology, geosciences and specifically the physical properties of rock and the distribution of minerals in borehole cores, petrophysics to predict the percentage tar/oil/water content within sandstone samples and others. The penetration capability of neutrons through specimens with a matrix of high atomic number (dense materials) and their ability to be attenuated by low atomic number material (light density) makes neutron imaging complementary to X-ray imaging. The capability of X-ray and gamma radiation for relatively easy penetration through specimens of low atomic number allows for viewing of imbedded high atomic number materials and density variation. X-ray micro focus radiography is capable of resolving objects of micro scale size that are micro distances apart whereas X-ray phase contrast radiography utilizes the wave properties of the electromagnetic spectrum of X-rays to clearly define edges of the specimen under investigation. Many applications with neutrons as imaging probe are successfully applied at several facilities across the globe such as at NIST in USA, Neutra at PSI in Switzerland, and ANTARES at FRM2 in Germany, etc, are documented 4?9, through world conferences on neutron radiography, for example. This is achieved through very well thought through and implemented instrumentation from the production of neutrons to their detection and interpretation of the images. The need arose at Necsa to upgrade the current facility from 42-year-old technology, which was successfully applied in neutron imaging over the past 10 years, to state-of-the-art technology found at European facilities. This initiative started under the auspices of an IAEA-TC programme for the period 2007?2010.

The CSense advanced process control (APC) solution?s main objective was to improve the stability of the pH in the first stage leach process thereby improving nickel and iron extraction efficiencies and reducing the base metal (BM) content in the platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate. By improving the stability of the control of the pH on the first stage leach it had the corresponding effect of improving the Ni extraction efficiency by 0.5% and the Fe extraction efficiency by 3.3%. The system relieved the operators of many decisions that were virtually impossible to make given the complex, variable and real-time nature of the processes in their charge. On the operational side, the operators understand the APC system and they trust it. Another benefit is the reduction in pH peaks in the autoclave, which can oxidize certain elements whereby they become difficult, if not impossible, to leach. These elements go right through the process and end up contaminating the PGM solids, with the result that the entire batch has to be recycled through a lengthy and costly processing pipeline.

A high volume of slimes which are separated out during the mining of heavy mineral sands has a high environmental impact and results in great capital as well as operational expenses. The presence of clay minerals drastically increases the slimes volume that needs to be catered for due to its low settling capability as well as swelling characteristics. By adding coagulants in the form of cations and organics, one can improve the settling rate of the minerals as well as the degree of solid bed compaction. The addition of flocculant, which is currently used in industry to improve settling rate, is detrimental to solid bed compaction. By combining the cations and flocculant one can dramatically improve the solid bed compaction. This combination is, however, detrimental to the settling rate of kaolinite-rich slimes but improves the settling rate of smectite-rich slimes. Organics can also be used to produce a clear supernatant and improve the settling rate.

Effective perimeter control during drilling and blasting is critical not only to blasting results but also to the overall stability of the pit over its entire life span. A pit where perimeter control is not given enough attention when conducting drilling and blasting operations, often experiences over-break or back break beyond final pit wall limits, and therefore has a relatively high probability of failure. Such a pit also becomes unsafe, sometimes not easily accessible, has increased loading costs due to production of oversize, longer cycle times and often problems are encountered when blasting subsequent benches. All these are undesirable consequences, which have negative cost implications. Specialised blasting techniques such as trim blasting and pre-splitting have over the years proved to be effective perimeter control measures. However, the success of these techniques is directly attributable to the time and effort given to the processes. This paper presents results of a project undertaken to monitor, review and optimize the trim blasting and pre-splitting processes at Orapa Diamond Mine in Botswana. The project was specifically incepted to improve the final wall conditions, which continued to deteriorate due to persistent over-break during blasting. The paper also analyses the results obtained against a benchmark of results taken prior to project implementation. Specific blast design parameters which are critical to blasting results were identified as problem areas after auditing of the pre-implementation drilling and blasting practices. These include drill-hole depth, spacing, splitting factor for pre-splits and timing of trim blasts. The impact of different rock types on the results was also studied, and recommendations were made at different phases of the project and results obtained after implementation analysed until optimum results were achieved.
