Discussion I. R. M. Cheston (Visitor): I should like to congratulate the authors on this interesting paper which graphically illustrates the overall effects of the gradual developments in diamond concentrating processes which have taken place over the past few years. These final stages of diamond concentration represent only a minor factor in the cost of diamond production but because of the shortage of highly trained people for this work, any easing of the burden on the sorting staff has an importance far beyond the immediate economic sphere. The search for the solution of problems posed by the economic and social conditions of industry is never-ending. The Diamond Research Laboratory is, even now, carrying out further work to improve still more the operation of general diamond recovery processes as described in the paper. Before looking at some of the latest developments in this field of final recovery, there are a few points arising from the paper on which I would like to comment. On page 321, reference is made to the X-ray sorters originally developed by the DRL. The paper gives a figure of 100 per cent recovery of diamonds from +7 mesh concentrates in two passes through the prototype machine. Not wishing to claim miraculous powers for our group, I would prefer to see this given as virtually 100 per cent recovery of all fluorescing diamonds. Firstly however much care is taken, there is bound to be an occasional operating loss. In the test work, 100 per cent recovery was made on many occasions but this was not always so. Secondly, although most diamonds fluoresce strongly under X-rays, some diamonds only fluoresce weakly. Type IIB diamonds, in fact hardly fluoresce at all, but the incidence of this special type of diamond is very low in most deposits. However, in operating the commercial X-ray machines, there is a certain background level of reflected radiation from other feed particles. Unless the diamond fluorescence is several times greater than this, it is not possible to achieve sufficient sensitivity in ejection. A certain small but variable proportion of diamonds from each deposit is always found to fluoresce too weakly to be recovered by the X-ray machine. Tests have shown, that for the De Beers mines, this proportion is considerably less than I per cent. These diamonds are nearly all dark brown or black in colour and therefore of low value. The degree of fluorescence does not, however, depend entirely on the colour or quality of the diamond and some of the brightest fluorescence comes from the lowest quality of boart diamonds. Investigations into the property of the diamond which causes this low fluorescence are being carried out. On page 322 it is suggested that zircon fluoresces in the same colour spectrum as the diamond. This is not quite accurate. The total light given out by zircon under X-rays is of the same order as that of diamond. However the zircon radiation has a much wider spectrum band than the diamond fluorescence. Reference is also made on page 322 to the effect of selective milling in small laboratory mills on diamonds. Perfect diamonds are very hard and very strong and are extremely difficult to break. Imperfect diamonds, which form the majority of diamonds recovered from most deposits, although hard, can be very brittle. Even under slight impact some of these diamonds may shatter to powder. Milling conditions must therefore be extremely closely controlled to minimize breakage, and even so, some breakage will always occur. As suggested in the paper, the necessary conditions are: the use of small balls, slow speed mills and very limited water addition. Tests elsewhere have suggested that the water content of the pulp in such a mill must be less than 25 per cent by weight of pulp to prevent diamond breakage reaching significant proportions. The skin flotation techniques described on page 323 operate on a very small scale. It is of interest to note that in West Africa a large-scale continuous skin flotation machine is used to recover the fine diamonds. In this operation the feed is dried and, after standing, is mixed with water and fed in a single layer onto a woven phosphor-bronze conveyor belt. This belt runs at a shallow angle into a water bath and as the particles are carried through the air-water-interface, the diamonds float off and over a weir into a collecting box. The bulk of the particles, being wettable, sink to the bottom of the tank and are continuously removed. If treated without prior drying, the diamond recovery is poor. If material is treated immediately after drying, a lot of the gangue particles also float. During standing, in the hot and humid atmosphere of West Africa, it is found that the gangue particles recover their wettability much faster than the diamond particles. Optimum selectivity is obtained after standing for approximately 24 hours. At the DRL we have been experimenting with optical filters to differentiate between the fluorescence of diamonds and zircon. Platinum base alloys are very corrosion resistant and have got a high melting point. Similar to Ni-base superalloys, which are used for jet turbines, the hardening effect of the intermetallic L12Pt3Al phase is used to receive a material that is creep resistant at high temperatures. Chromium is added to the alloy system to stabilize the L12phase down to room temperature. With the right amount of nickel the misfit and shape of the precipitates can be controlled. Various alloy compositions have been melted and analysed. With scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) a microstructure can be observed, which is very similar to the one in Ni-base superalloys. To support alloy development with simulations, a thermodynamic database of the Pt-Al-Cr-Ni system is about to be established. The SEM and EDS measurements provide useful input to the thermodynamic optimization. Also many data from the literature have been used to receive the best approximation. The Cr-Pt binary phase diagram has been reassessed and the latest results of thermodynamic modelling are presented.

In this study, we review the role of mechanical activation in the pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical processing of titanium feedstock. Mechanical activation has been shown to decrease the activation energy of chemical reactions, thus enhancing process efficiency and product quality by reducing processing time and energy consumption. Pyrometallurgical processing is energy-intensive and time-consuming. Hydrometallurgy is costly, requires high-grade feed material, and generates toxic waste. Waste generation and process complexity are the major drawbacks of electrometallurgy and solvent extraction. Bioleaching via a mechanically activated pyrometallurgical process can be identified as an alternative method, but the lengthy processing time is the major disadvantage. Mechanically activated titanium concentrate can be used in a finely tuned combined metallurgical process to overcome the challenges and drawbacks in these technologies.

The Kriel Colliery is an Anglo Coal mine which is contracted with Eskom to produce No. 4 seam for Kriel power station. The mine previously found it uneconomical to mine No. 5 seam due to the low qualities and tonnages of the seam, both at the opencast and underground sections. An area has been encountered for the first time at Kriel Colliery opencast pit 5, where the tonnage and qualities of No. 5 seam warrant further investigation. The primary reason for the investi¬gation of No. 5 seam by Kriel Colliery is because of the advantage of the high selling price (R450/t) that the market is currently prepared to pay for the No. 5 seam. The aim of this project is to mine No. 5 seam economically without interrupting No. 4 seam mining operations. The problem is that the equipments that are currently being used at the mine belong to Eskom and are dedicated to mining No. 4 seam only, not No. 5 seam. Through geology investigation, it is found that the whole No. 5 seam (No. 5 seam upper and lower) has an average thickness of 1.8 m. It also contains a parting of carbonaceous shale which divides the seam into two parts. No. 5 seam upper contains less tonnage compared to No. 5 seam lower. The calorific value and ash content of No. 5 seam lower is far better than No. 5 seam upper, but would still require washing the coal. This makes No. 5 seam lower the preferred seam to mine because it meets the requirements of the customer which is Highveld Steel. It is a coincidence that the area containing No. 5 seam under investigation encounters high overburden problems. The problem of drilling to No. 4 seam was going to be encountered because the thickness of the overburden ranges from 35 to 39 m. The Gardner Denver at the mine can drill blastholes only to a depth of 34.5 m, meaning the full overburden will not be drilled at once. This means the mining of No. 5 seam will do favours for Eskom because the overburden thickness will be minimized. This then led to an agreement between Anglo Coal and Eskom to mine No. 5 seam because both companies benefit from the project. In order to identify a suitable mining method for No. 5 seam lower, literature studies took place. It is found that San Juan mine from the USA has similar geological features to Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam. Through comparisons, it is found that truck and shovel mining would suit the geology of Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam since San Juan mine is using it. The sequence of mining No. 5 seam lower allows for a clearance of two cuts between the truck and shovel operation and the dragline. The mining sequence of No. 5 and 4 seam will be in the order of top soil removal; soft overburden pre-stripping; pre-strip drilling; pre-strip hard overburden; No. 5 seam lower coaling; interburden drilling and blasting; interburden stripping and No. 4 seam coaling. Financial evaluation of the project shows that a contractor will charge Kriel Colliery (Anglo Coal) approximately R 102.2 million to mine No. 5 seam successfully. The sales of No. 5 seam lower will provide a profit of R99.4 million at a yield of 70% from the washing plant. The project is beneficial to both Eskom and Anglo Coal because Eskom will have eliminated the problem of pre-stripping and Anglo Coal will generate additional profit. Through investigation and analyses of the project, it is proven to be viable and should take place. This is after looking at the advantages that the project has for Anglo Coal and Eskom. The limit equilibrium model, used in displacement discontinuity codes, is a popular method to simulate pillar failure. This paper investigates the use of physical modelling to calibrate this model. For the experiments, an artificial pillar material was prepared and cubes were poured using the standard 100 mm × 100 mm civil engineering concrete moulds. The friction angle between the cubes and the platens of the testing machine was varied by using soap and sandpaper. Different modes of failure were observed depending on the friction angle. Of interest is that significant loadshedding was recorded for some specimens which visually remained mostly intact. This highlights the difficulty of classifying pillars as failed or intact in underground stopes where spalling is observed. The laboratory models enabled a more precise calibration of the limit equilibrium model compared to previous attempts. Guidelines to assist with calibration of the model are given in the paper. The limit equilibrium model appears to be a useful approximation of the pillar failure as it could simulate the stress-strain behaviour of the laboratory models.

Iron ore pellets experience degradation during handling due low energy impacts and stresses. These impacts lead to volume or surface breakage of the pellets, creating fine particles that accumulate along the process. Some of the particles are in contact with the air and are dragged as dust into the workplace or into the atmosphere. The aerodynamic size of the particles allows them to be potentially inhaled by the workers or to be carried to nearby communities. Dust emission becomes critical at specific locations, such as transfer chutes and stockpiles. This work models the dust generation that occurs in an iron ore pellet stockyard using a methodology that combines experiments to quantify the degradation of the pellets to mathematical modelling of the dust emission mechanisms in the stockyard. First, laboratory tests were used to characterise the amount of mass and the particle size distribution of the dust generated by degradation under controlled conditions. Second, the flow over a stockpile of an iron ore pellet company was simulated with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Third, semiempirical equations linked the data generated by simulations and laboratory tests to estimate the dust emission in the stockyard. Finally, results were validated with measured field data, obtained with a novel online measurement tool. Results suggest that the approach is able to predict dust emission with sufficient accuracy and can be used for further implementation in the management of operations and decision making in order to reduce the environmental impact of the process. The FUTURE project aims to enhance seismic surveying in South African mining by integrating advanced acquisition technologies. In this paper, we detail surface and underground seismic surveys at the South Deep gold mine as part of the project. Surface seismic acquisition used co-located broadband micro-electromechanical sensors, one and three component recorders connected to geophones, distributed acoustic sensing using a straight fibre optic cable, along with a 6 ton broadband seismic vibrator operating with 4–180 Hz linear sweeps. In addition, underground surveys employed a combination of straight, and helically wound fibre optic cables, cabled-based and nodal sensors, along with a 500 kg drophammer mounted on a skid steer bobcat. The surface and underground seismic arrays were time synchronised using a GPS-time transmitter to allow for accurate seismic data recording in a GPS-denied environment. Results show the efficacy of these techniques in acquiring high-resolution seismic data, revealing detailed subsurface geological structures and mineralisation down to 3500 m below ground surface. Surface data revealed clear seismic reflections corresponding to the Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef. An underground P-wave velocity model exhibits low velocity anomalies that are associated with fracturing, while a P-wave reflection stack section shows significant reflections and a degree of faulting below the tunnel floor that was not observed on the surface reflection seismic data. We highlight the potential of these technologies to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mining. This study sets a benchmark for future reflection seismic surveys, paving the way for safer, more efficient, deep mineral exploration and extraction practices.

The principal advantages of fibre optics as compared to copper wire are well known and include almost perfect electromagnetic isolation, light weight, small size, excellent transmission security and substantially better bandwidth/distance performance. The decreasing cost of the optical fibre technology (both fibre cable and equipment) has led to another generation of private networks, which provide much larger bandwidths, very high reliability and an increase of the maximum geographical coverage. The larger bandwidth allows to transport all types of information on a single network. Typical communication requirements are speech (audio), computer data, LAN info, control information, video, etc. OTN or ‘Open Transport Network’ is a transmission system based on the latest available technology in fibre optics. It is characterized by the dual ring approach, resulting in high network availability, and the integration of different types of services in one network. As such, it can fulfil almost all transmission requirements for voice, data, LAN, video and any special service required.

ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. On a eu égard à court terme dans la conception d'exécution à des demandes supplémentaires vers la conception de sécurité, qui ont résulté sur la base de l'interprétation des accidents d'incendie dans des tunnels dans les années dernières. La paroi intérieure était construite largement de béton non armé.

Compressed air is widely used on South African gold mines. However, due to recent and proposed future electricity tariff increases it is quickly becoming too expensive to produce and use. Boxfront chute systems at ore passes were focused on during this study, and a number of alternative power sources were examined. After comparing primarily costs, and secondarily safety and practicality, of a number of systems based on water and hydraulic oil, a system making use of either air or water was determined to be the most cost effective. A payback time of 8 years was calculated, which will be significantly less taking into account the avoidance of failures due to electricity and water shortages, which would not affect this system due to its ability to swap between either air or water. It was recommended that this system be installed at all boxfront chutes as soon as possible so that the company can begin to benefit from the cost savings.

The development of newer and improved electrical products has led to an increase in the rate at which older products are discarded as waste. The main focus of electronic waste is the printed circuit board (PCB) because of the inherently high value of contained metals such as gold and copper. Several options for treatment of the non-metallic fraction including material recycling, where the residue may be used as inclusions in concrete or asphalt materials with minimal processing or chemical recycling, where chemicals and fuels are produced from the residue using pyrolysis exist. In this paper, the utilisation of the non-metallic leached PCB waste fraction as reductant in secondary copper smelting was investigated. Analysis of the leached residue revealed that PCB is highly amorphous and has a carbon content of 28.5%, an oxygen content of 23.1%, with the ash and volatile matter contents 40.1% and 44.8% respectively. Thermodynamic simulations of secondary smelting of copper were conducted in terms of metal recovery, and the energy required when PCB was used as a reductant. The results were also compared with that of coal and PCB-coal blends. The simulations revealed that as PCB in the blend used as reductants increases, the amount of energy required for the smelting operation decreases. Metal recovery slightly decreased as the mass percent of PCB in the blend increased due to lower carbon content present in PCB relative to coal. The results also highlighted the energy saving with PCB-coal blends which was around 160 kWh per ton of feed relative to coal. The decrease in the amount of energy required for the operation is attributed to the higher volatile content of the PCB, which is also a part of the reduction process. "The primary objective of any mining business unit is to make profit by extracting, processing, and selling minerals from a particular mineral deposit. It is important to optimize extraction of the mineral resource given time, capital, and space constraints. Mineral extraction is often associated with uncertainty due to variable technical and human factors. Technical factors such as grade distribution, ground conditions, and equipment reliability influence the performance of a mining production system (MPS). The performance of the MPS is also impacted by human factors such as employee skills, health, and attendance. Uncertainty associated with technical and human factors often leads to actual output differing from what was planned. Therefore an in-depth analysis of the significant causes of deviations from the planned outcomes is relevant.In this paper we investigate the empirical relationships between inputs and outputs in a MPS in order to assist management in directing efforts at key production drivers. Once a MPS has been empirically characterized, more effort and resources can be focused on the key decision-making variables (DMVs) in order to meet the planned outcomes.For a typical underground, tabular, narrow-reef conventional drill-andblast platinum mine the face advance, face length mined, number of teams, team efficiencies, and team size have a statistically significant relationship with the centares (m²) produced, which is a key performance indicator (KPI). The production function derived in this study can be used to align the physical, technical, and human factors together to predict the optimal output level. The most significant production lever of the MPS is the face advance. The MPS exists within the mineral extraction link of the complete mining value chain. It represents the stage where mining companies have the opportunity, through production, to start generating returns on the investments undertaken. G. H. HENDERSON INTRODUCTION It is a pleasure to have read Mr Schuman's wide ranging and highly informative paper and also to congratulate him. Before proceeding to give views on the use and preservation of coal in South Africa, it is perhaps apposite to look at the South African scene on the world canvas. Mr Schuman's figures in his Table I are highly revealing. The Table shows expected consumption, export and import demand in the year 1980 by the continents of the world. The Republic of South Africa is shown as one of only four exporting countries at that date, although in the interim, Australia has become an exporter and will continue to grow as an exporter of coal. Huge fields have been proved in recent years. There is reason to think that for some years, coal and its economical uses have been under-estimated. The importation of oil carries a constant question mark and the exciting possibilities expressed in the uses of Dranium a decade ago for power generation, appear to have met with some setback. Present indications are that breederreactors will be delayed until about 1990. The capital cost of such reactors, too, is enormous. By 1980 it has been estimated that 20 per cent of the energy required by the leading ten nations of the world will come from nuclear power, but 80 per cent would then remain for fossil fuels and hydro generation. COAL DEMAND AND USAGE It is of interest to record that coal production in all the countries of Europe has declined markedly in the last 25 years. This is due to competition from oil, gas and nuclear power and also for sociological reasons; but there are signs that efforts will be made to resuscitate, at least in some measure, the mining of coking coals for which there is a strong and growing demand. Possibly all hard coal now mined in Germany has coking properties and that country is self-sufficient in this commodity. Germany might perhaps consider selling coking coal to her neighbours and importing additional coal for power-raising purposes. It has been frequently stated in American publications that the coal reserves of the D.S.A. are sufficient for 1 000 years. What that means, I do not know, but it is at least an indication that America has huge reserves of coal. Domestic and export demand in the U.S.A. in 1968 exceeded production for the first time. In 1969, the United States' output amounted to some 556 million tons, an increase of less than 2 per cent on the previous year. The output achieved fell short of demand, domestic and export, by more than 7 000 000 tons. This has caused and is continuing to cause anxiety in the U.S.A. In many countries young men for a number of reasons, largely environmental and social, are not coming forward in sufficient numbers for mining requirements and the same pattern has revealed itself in the Republic. This is, indeed, alarming because mining men in large numbers will be required to meet the estimated tonnage requirements set out in the following Table: It is difficult to visualise the replacement of these coal requirements either by oil or by nuclear fuels. The coal must be mined and men are required for the purpose. Unless a greater section of the population is allowed to participate in the more responsible aspects of mining, there is a serious likelihood that demand will not be matched by output. In addition to local demand, a lively export trade is possible. Exports are dependent on the future capacity of the South African Railways and Harbours and on Government policy. An export figure of 10000000 tons per year during the decade can be visualised and this figure would raise total estimated sales production to a figure of over 100 000 000 tons in 1980. A Honeywell TDC 2000 central process control system was installed at Rössing in 1984. The system controls the metallurgical operations from crushing to the finished product of uranium oxide and manufacture of sulphuric acid. The operation was previously controlled from nine separate local control rooms. The paper briefly reviews the design and commissioning of the control system on an operating plant and discusses the impact on manpower organisation and training needs. Development of the process control system during its first two years of operation is reviewed and a summary is given of the current status of computer control at Rössing. The impact of the new system on overall plant operation and performance efficiency is also briefly described. In conclusion, future developments of computer control and overall optimisation of metallurgical operations are reviewed.

Currency fluctuations affect the rand revenues of all exports of mineral commodities, as well as influencing their price on local markets. Of the more than 50 mineral commodities produced by South Africa, about 75 per cent derive 40 to 100 per cent of their revenues from exports. . Although supply and demand are largely beyond its control, management can maximize its revenues despite fluctuating overseas prices and exchange rates by using the right market at the right time. Management can operate in the futures markets, which involve a specific commitment to deliver a specific quantity of a standardized commodity at a set time in the future and at a price that is determined on a futures exchange in open auction; or management can use the options market, in which a producer can insure against the risk of a falling price by taking out a put-option, which gives the holder the right (but not the obligation) to sell the commodity at a stated price at an agreed time in the future. In the forward markets, management has three available tools; forward currency transactions, trading of currency options, and money market hedges. "Flotation columns are normally operated at optimal superficial gas velocities to maintain bubbly flow conditions. However, with increasing superficial gas velocity, loss of bubbly flow may occur with adverse effects on column performance. It is therefore important to identify the maximum superficial gas velocity above which loss of bubbly flow occurs. The maximum superficial gas velocity is usually obtained from a gas holdup versus superficial gas velocity plot in which the linear portion of the graph represents bubbly flow while deviation from the linear relationship indicates a change from the bubbly flow to the churn-turbulent regime. However, this method is difficult to use when the transition from bubbly flow to churn-turbulent flow is gradual, as happens in the presence of frothers. We present two alternative methods in which the flow regime in the column is distinguished by means of radial gas holdup profiles and gas holdup versus time graphs obtained from CFD simulations. Bubbly flow was characterized by saddle-shaped profiles with three distinct peaks, or saddle-shaped profiles with two near-wall peaks and a central minimum, or flat profiles with intermediate features between saddle and parabolic gas holdup profiles. The transition regime was gradual and characterized by flat to parabolic gas holdup profiles that become steeper with increasing superficial gas velocity. The churn-turbulent flow was distinguished by steep parabolic radial gas holdup profiles. Gas holdup versus time graphs were also used to define flow regimes with a constant gas holdup indicating bubbly flow, while wide gas holdup variations indicate churn-turbulent flow. Churn-turbulent flow, on the other hand, is characterized by a wide variation in bubble sizes with large bubbles rising rapidly and causing liquid circulation.Flotation columns are normally operated in the bubbly flow regime, which is the optimal condition for column flotation (Finch and Dobby, 1990; Yianatos and Finch, 1990; Ityokumbul, 1992). However, it has been generally observed that flotation column performance deteriorates when the superficial gas velocity is increased beyond a certain limit where the flow regime changes from bubbly flow to churn-turbulent flow (Xu, Finch, and Uribe-Salas, 1991). The identification of this critical or maximum superficial gas velocity is therefore important for optimal operation of flotation columns."

The idea of GOLD 100, an international conference on gold, was first conceived by Mr Les Haughton of Mintek in mid 1984. By the beginning of 1985, plans were well advanced to hold what was to be the most comprehensive conference on gold ever organized. Appropriately, GOLD 100 was timed to coincide with the celebration of Johannesburg's centenary. Leaching The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will hold a two-day colloquium on the topic of leaching on 8th and 9th November, 1988, with the objective of bringing the latest developments in leaching technology to the attention of the mineral-processing industry.

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied to predict the average gas holdup and the axial gas holdup variation in a 13.5 m high cylindrical column 0.91 m diameter. The column was operating in batch mode. A Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase approach with appropriate interphase momentum exchange terms was applied to simulate the gas-liquid flow inside the column. Turbulence in the continuous phase was modelled using the k-_ realizable turbulence model. The predicted average gas holdup values were in good agreement with experimental data. The axial gas holdup prediction was generally good for the middle and top parts of the column, but was over-predicted for the bottom part of the column. Bubble velocity profiles were observed in which the axial velocity of the air bubbles decreased with height in the column. This may be related to the upward increase in gas holdup in the column. Simulations were also conducted to compare the gas holdup predicted with the universal, the Schiller-Naumann, and the Morsi-Alexander drag models. The gas holdup predictions for the three drag models were not significantly different. IntroductionColumn flotation is an important concentration technology that is used in the mineral processing and coal beneficiation industries. The growing interest in the use of column flotation in mineral processing has been attributed to the simpler flotation circuits and improved metallurgical performance compared to conventional flotation cells (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Flotation columns have also found other applications outside mineral processing, such as de-inking of recycled paper (Finch and Hardie, 1999).In column flotation, a rising swarm of air bubbles generated by means of air spargers is employed to collect the valuable mineral particles and separate them from the gangue minerals in a countercurrent process. Wash water, which is continuously fed at the top of the column, is used to eliminate entrained particles and stabilize the froth. The column volume can be divided into two sections – the collection zone in which the bubbles collect the floatable mineral particles, and the cleaning zone (or froth zone) where product upgrading is enhanced through the removal of unwanted particles entrained in the water mixed with bubbles from the collection zone."

"Zircon is a naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) and as such is subject to a variety of regulations around the world. The regulatory processes and their implementation are summarized and the key issues affecting zircon and zirconia highlighted. Having absorbed the activities of the former Zircon Minerals Committee, the strategy of the Zircon Industry Association (ZIA) is to be the ‘go-to place’ for information on these matters, and its activities in the NORM space are described. Chemical industry regulations such as REACH are spreading around the world, and the paper provides an update of their status in the key jurisdictions. As mineral sands are transported to market in oceangoing vessels, they are subject to the regulations of the International Maritime Organization, which are summarized in the paper. IntroductionFrom a global perspective, zircon is generally not found in high concentrations other than in placer and dune deposits where it has been deposited along with other heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, and monazite. Such deposits have been sorted and concentrated over geological time by the action of tides, waves, and wind to form concentrated deposits of heavy minerals along old coastlines and in river beds and deltas. Consequently, zircon is mostly found in association with the principal titanium minerals ilmenite and rutile. These secondary concentrations in placer deposits provide the commercial sources of zircon.All geological materials contain natural radioactivity, although the term NORM (naturally occurring radioactive material) is mostly used for minerals and other materials with above-average uranium and thorium concentrations. Importantly, the radioactive nature of zircon has not changed, but the way in which radioactivity is viewed by regulators has, affecting the zircon industry throughout the value chain."
