The complexities that exist in the nature of the basic feedstock to the metallurgical process call for a high degree of ingenuity from the extractive metallurgist in seeking the best possible treatment method for a particular ore. Drawing from personal experience the author presents four case studies that demonstrate the value of creative thinking in addressing the challenges typically encountered by the extraction metallurgist. It is concluded that creative expression most often occurs in response to a perceived strong need within an organization. By deliberately laying down meaningful challenges management can stimulate innovative thinking and achieve extraordinary results.

Mr Janisch' s comment' in the August issue on Dick Stacey's remarks about safety factors indeed requires wider debate. The example he quoted to illustrate the successful application of the safety factor concept in coal mining, namely the Salamon formula, is to my knowledge the only recognized application of that concept. Not only that, but that particular formula should be used only for what it was intended, namely to prevent major disasters. It was never intended to indicate long-term pillar stability, and it should not be used for that.

In this paper, we present a sensitivity study for the numerical modelling of hydromechanical coupling around a shaft in partially saturated claystone. Two representative constitutive models have been used: an elastoplastic damage model (IDEPLML) and an elastic perfect plastic model based on the Hoek and Brown failure criterion (H&B). A series of comparative studies have been performed with respect to main parameters involved in coupling process (mechanical, hydraulic and hydric properties). The emphasis is put on the evaluation of induced plastic, damaged and failed zone due to excavation and drying process. Dans ce papier, nous présentons une étude numérique paramétrique du comportement hydromécanique couplé d’une argilite partiellement saturé, lors du creusement et de la maintenance d’un puit L’étude paramétrique porte à la fois sur le type de modèle et sur les principaux paramètres (mécaniques hydrauliques et hydriques) intervenant dans le couplage. Die parametrische Analyse konzentriert sich auf den Modelltypus und auf die wesentlichen bei der Verbindung wirksamen Parameter, d.h. die mechanischen, hydraulischen und hydrologischen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Bewährung der plastifizierten Bereiche des Bauwerkes während der Austrocknung.

Residual stresses observed in rocks often result from non-compatible initial strains. These stresses can be determined when the incompatibility tensor associated with the initial strain tensor is known. The residual stresses in a cylindrical rock sample can be computed the sample is considered small enough for its incompatibility tensor to be constant. Les contraintes résiduelles, dont on observe couramment les manifestations dans les roches, résultent souvent de l’existence de déformations initiales non-compatibles. Ces contraintes peuvent être calculées lorsque le tenseur d’incompatibilité associé aux déformations initiales est connu. Les contraintes résiduelles dans une éprouvette cylindrique sont données dans le cas où le tenseur d’incompatibilité est constant. Eigenspannungen, die man haeufig in Steinen beobachtet, sind oft Ergebnis einer inkompatiblen Deformation des Anfangszustandes. Diese Spannungen koennen berechnet werden, wenn der Inkompatibilitaets-Tensor der Anfangsdeformation bekannt ist. The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological model seven further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip.. Platinum-based alloys are being developed for high temperature and special applications for good corrosion and oxidation resistance. The microstructures are similar to those of nickel-based super alloys, and comprise ~Pt3Al particles in a Pt-based matrix. After assessing binary alloys, the best candidate system was found to be Pt-Al. Testing and selection of alloys based on Pt-Al were undertaken, where the ternary additions comprised Ru, Cr, Ta, Ir and Ti. As well as phase characterization work, mechanical and oxidation tests were undertaken. The best alloys were found to be Pt-Al-Cr and Pt-Al-Ru. However, the volume fraction of the ~Pt3Al was only around40 per cent instead of the ~70 per cent found in Ni-based super alloys. To increase this, trials were conducted on a range of Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys, the optimum composition being Pt80:Al14:Cr3:Ru3.Currently, further additions are being made to the quaternary alloys to change selected properties. As well as developing the alloys themselves, another part of the project is to compile a thermodynamic database using Thermo-Calc?. Phase diagram work has been undertaken so that the results can be input to Thermo-Calc? so that the descriptions of the phases can be optimized. The final database will allow the phases and compositions of selected alloys to be derived, thus predicting the alloys? components without necessarily undertaking further experimental work. This will aid the development of the alloys and will be a useful tool to the final developers of the alloys. The Eighteenth International Symposium on the Appli¬cation of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries was held in London from 26th to 30th March, 1984. The Symposium was organized by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy under the leadership of Mr M.J. Cahalan, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. The venue chosen was the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science and Technology, in South Kensington. Some 300 delegates from all parts of the world attended, which included a delegation from South Africa that numbered about 20 persons. This extremely successful series of international meet¬ings was begun in 1961 in Tucson, Arizona, and has grown in strength and importance over the years. The arrange¬ment of the symposia is regulated by the International Council for APCOM under the Chairmanship of Professor R.V. Ramani (U.S.A.), the other current members being Professor J. Elbrond (Canada), Dr Thys B. Johnson (U.S.A.), Professor Young C. Kim (U.S.A.), Professor D.G. Krige (R.S.A.), Professor A.J. Lynch (Australia), Professor C.T. Shaw (U.K.), Dr A. Weiss (U.S.A.), and Professor F.L. Wilke (F.R.G.). There is no doubt that the enthusiasm and dedication of this small group of people and the excellent working relationship that exists between them are responsible for the continued success of APCOM meetings.

Copper and cobalt are generally electro-won from their aqueous sulphate solutions. After optimised leaching of their ores, concentrates or calcine bearing minerals, the leachate is clarified and suitably purified prior to the electrolytic extraction of the metal of pursuit (Pearcy, 2006). Solvent extraction (SX) using appropriate organic solvents and ion exchange (IX) with relevant resins are known purification processes used for copper and cobalt recovery (Stanely, 1970).As zeolites in general and natural zeolites in particular, demonstrate ion exchange properties (Korkuna et al., 2005), an attempt has been made to use Southern African natural clinoptilolite in the recovery of copper and cobalt from their aqueous sulphate solutions. Initially, synthetic Co and Cu solutions were prepared. Preceded by laboratory ore leachate, plant solutions are to be used. AAS, XRF, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy and BET were characterization techniques used. Natural clinoptilolite was used as-received as well as acid activated; and cobalt and copper extractions were performed at room temperature.

Equipment selection in mining operations is an important issue, and also difficult to solve in multiple criteria environments. The paper in question has aimed to develop computer software for solving equipment selection problems in mining. In their paper, Basçetin et al. have analysed two case study problems related to open pit and underground mining method selection. By using Yager?s method1, the authors have selected 18 different criteria in the first case study and 21 criteria in the second case study. However, as emphasized by Ozdemir2, in pair wise comparison matrices the appropriate number of criteria should be seven as the maximum, from the point view of validation, consistency and redundancy. In cases where there are more than seven criteria to be handled, it is suggested that the criteria should be clustered and then the maximum number of clusters and subcriteria of every cluster should be limited to seven4.

The paper presents the comments on the advantages of implementing an integrated system of managing mining exploitation in hard coal mines, as well as the comprehensive integration of information on the process of deposit exploitation with economic data, so as to achieve an optimum technical and economic effects. The principles of constructing the production management system have been presented, thanks to which the management boards are provided with reliable technical and economic information on a mining company via information technology. The strategic direction of a company’s operation may currently be verified according to the external conditions that change over time (the information on the deposit, force majeure events, changing expectations of customers, etc.).

ABSTRACT: The technique of various kinds of numerical analysis offered remarkable results to explication of many rock mechanical phenomena. These techniques regarded a rock stratum as a continuum body and solved the governing equation of continuum mechanics by using finite differ-ence method, finite element method and/or others. Using numerical analysis based on continuum mechanics, however, the simulations of destruction phenomena caused by elastic waves and on the other hand, the elastic wave propagation which generated by fracturing events are quite difficult. In this paper, we express a rock stratum by a granular body model and develop a simulation tech-nique can simulate both wave phenomena and destruction phenomena at once. The DEM (discrete element method) simulation results are compared with finite difference solutions of elastic wave equation. Furthermore, we simulate Hopkinson effect by this proposed method. Hopkinson effect is famous as a destruction phenomenon caused by elastic wave propagation. ABRISS: In dieser Studie drücken wird eine Felsschicht durch ein Granularkörpermodell aus und entwickeln eine Simulationstechnik, die sowohl Wellenphänomene als auch Zerstörungsphänomene simulieren kann. Die Ergebnisse der Simulation mit DEM (Diskrete-Elemente-Methode) werden mit denen der Finit-Differenz-Lösung von Gleichungen elastischer Wellen verglichen. Desweiteren simulierten wir den Hopkinson-Effekt mit dieser vorgeschlagenen Methode. Der Hopkinson-Effekt ist als Zerstörungsphänomen berühmt, verursacht durch Fortpflanzung elastischer Wellen. RESUME: Dans cette étude, nous exprimons un lit de roches par un modèle à corps granulaire et développons une technique, permettant de simuler d'un coup le phénomène des ondes et le phé-nomène de destruction. Les résultats de la simulation DEM (méthode d'éléments discrets) sont comparés aux solutions à différence finie de l'équation d'ondes élastiques. En outre, nous simulons l'effet d'Hopkinson par la méthode proposée. L'effet d'Hopkinson est connu comme phénomène de destruction, causé par la propagation d'ondes élastiques.

AK6 is a Cretaceous aged kimberlite located in the north-east of Botswana, close to Debswana's Drapa and Letlhakane Mines. It was discovered by Debswana in 1969, but was considered unattractive from an economic perspective. In 2003, Debot Prospecting Pty Ltd ('Debot') re-assessed the area and with the advent of new prospecting technology, particularly large diameter drilling ('LDD') and more detailed ground geophysical surveys found AK6 to be of interest. In 2005, the Boteti joint venture was formed between Debot and African Diamonds plc ('AFD'), which covered a number of Prospecting Licenses, including that which contained AK6.

The stability of slopes is a crucial problem not only in open pit mines, but also in civil engineering situations. The deformational behaviour of slopes is in general monitored during/after the excavation by carrying out field measurements where displacement measurements are commonly adopted. In monitoring the slope stability it should be emphasized that the measurement results must be properly interpreted so as to assess whether the slopes are stable or become unstable in the future. In order to interpret the data, back analysis is extremely useful. In this paper a slope stability monitoring system is described. It consists of displacement measurements by GPS, and a back analysis of measured data. The use of GPS has a great advantage, because of the fact that continuous displacement measurements with high accuracy for a large extent of concerned area can be easily achieved. On the other hand, the back analysis can reveal the mechanical characteristics of the ground, which make it possible to assess the stability of slopes quantitatively.

Tati Nickel is currently operating a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant in Botswana, using the Activox® process developed by LionOre Technology, to produce nickel cathode and a cobalt salt from a sulphide concentrate. Cobalt is extracted using Cyanex 272. This reagent also extracts all the iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, and manganese from the nickel stream. Versatic 10 carboxylic acid is then used as extractant to recover nickel from the stream, separating it from calcium and magnesium, and upgrading it to provide a suitable advance electrolyte for nickel electrowinning. However, the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium is limited, and gypsum formation in the extraction circuit is a problem when it is attempted to maximise the recovery of nickel. Mintek has developed a synergistic system with Versatic 10 for improved separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium. Laboratory test work was conducted on the raffinate of the cobalt solvent extraction circuit to optimise the Versatic 10/Nicksyn? (Mintek synergist) system to be employed. Extraction and stripping parameters suitable for this stream were optimised in the laboratory and then applied on the demonstration plant. A commercial batch (0.5 tons) of Nicksyn? reagent was produced for the demonstration plant. The laboratory test work results and the demonstration plant performance are discussed in detail in this paper.

"A recent amendment to Section 36(11)(e) of the Income Tax Act, 53 of 1968 (Tax Act) now extends the allowable deduction of ‘capital expenditure’ incurred by mining companies pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA). In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB 2016), the allowable deduction has been extended to include expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements as per the MPRDA. Interestingly, what necessitated the amendment was the need to recognize SLP requirements and to circumvent administrative difficulties for mining companies and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in differentiating the use of developmental infrastructure by employees or the community. The successful implementation of such a deduction hinges on a sound SLP system. However, given the challenges within the current SLP system, this amendment could be considered somewhat premature. IntroductionSection 36(11) of the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 (Tax Act) enabled mining companies to deduct certain capital expenditure in lieu of its other sections. In particular, it made provision for mining companies to deduct capital expenditure incurred pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA), but excluding capital expenditure incurred in respect of infrastructure or environmental rehabilitation. As such, mining companies could only deduct such capital expenditure that related directly to their employees and not to the wider community (Clegg, 2018).In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB, 2016) (South Africa, 2016a), the recent amendment to Section 36 extends the relief provided under section 36(11)(e) to include capital expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements of the MPRDA. In other words, the capital expenditure incurred by the mining company for the benefit of the people living in mining communities. To qualify for such a deduction, the infrastructure erected or developed by the mining company should reflect what was agreed between the mining company and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) as per the SLP requirements of the MPRDA (TLAB 2016)."

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

This article captures the intrinsic differences of thermal coal products, their utilization and their substitution characteristics. South Africa produces approximately 245 million tonnes of coal annually. Eskom consumes 46% (approximately 112 million tonnes), 26% (approximately 65 million tonnes) is exported, and SASOL Synthetic Fuels consumes 18% (approximately 44 million tonnes) and a further 9% (approximately 22 million tonnes) is consumed by domestic users in various different industries. Marketing theory contributes significantly to understanding the importance of technical product and quality appreciation and comprehension, encompassing elements of price, distribution, and promotion. Coal product specification is determined by the inherent geology of a resource and the number of complex actions to market the product to a specific consuming market. Sampling, analyses, beneficiation application, and an array of parameters contribute to matching thermal coal products to the value-in-use it provides to the different markets and its consuming industries. Coal producer shave come under increased scrutiny since South Africa has been experiencing electricity shortages since early 2008. General misunderstandings were declared on public forums and in the media by both legislators and the South African public since a perception developed that South African coal producers are exporting coal that could be utilized by Eskom.
