Develop a curved ray geotomographic program with constraints to counteract non-uniqueness in order to improve the reliability of seismic tomographic imaging of geological structure in mining regions. Background Seismic tomography provides a two-dimensional image (tomographic reconstruction) of the distribution of the seismic velocity in geologic structures using measured travel times of seismic waves crossing the area. It can provide a more complete representation of features be¬tween boreholes than other crosshole processing methods that measure only average properties or borehole logging methods that measure properties only near each borehole. Seismic tomography has many mining applications. They include locating geologic structures of contrasting seismic velocity, detecting fractured regions where the seismic velocity is low, and monitoring solution injected above the water table where the increase in saturation increases the seismic velocity. Thus, tomographic imaging techniques show great promise for detecting and locating geologic hazards that affect the productivity, safety, and environment of mining operations.

Provide an effective method for "soft" soldering aluminum and aluminum alloys using conventional tin-lead solder alloys and flukes. The Problem In the past, it was virtually impossible to solder aluminum and aluminum alloys using standard tin-lead soldering systems (solder and flux) due to the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film which forms instantly on aluminum and aluminum alloys when these are exposed to air. The tenacious and stable oxide film enables aluminum-base materials to maintain their bright luster. But the film also prevents the required wetting and spreading of solder on the substrate, causing the loss of adhesion between the solder and the substrate. Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States numbered 170 during May , 1923 , according to reports received by the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior from State mine inspectors . The production of coal during the month was 54,649,000 tons ; hence , the fatality rate was 3.11 per million tons . In May last year the fatality rate was 4.22 , based upon an output of 20,636,000 tons , including 35,000 tons of anthracite . Because of the miners ' suspension of work last year, the production of fresh-mined anthracite in May 1922 was completely stopped ; in May 1923 the anthracite output was 9,573,000 tons . For bituminous mines alone , the fatality rate in May 1923 was 2.67 per million tons as compared with 4.17 in May a year ago . During the first five months of the present year , the fatality rate for bituminous mines was 3.55 per million tons , based on 809 deaths , as against a rate of 3.70 for the corresponding months last year, based on 611 deaths . The rate for 1923 represents a reduction of 4 per cent . For anthracite mines alone the five-month fatality rate for 1923 was 5.36 per million tons , based on 228 fatalities , as against a rate of 6.72 for the first five months of 1922 based on 147 fatalities . The rate for 1923 represents a reduction of 20 per cent . The average fatality rate for May during the past ten years ( 1913-1922 ) is 3.37 per million tons for bituminous coal mines and 6.02 per million tons for anthracite mines . A gas explosion , due to open light , occurred on May 6 at Aguila , Colorado , and resulted in the death of ten men . This explosion brought the number of "major disasters " in 1923 to 4 , with a loss of 145 lives . During the first five months of last year, there were 7 similar disasters with a loss of 82 lives . The year's record to date for all fatalities from all causes shows a reduction in the fatality rates per million tons from haulage accidents and from falls of roof and coal , an increase in explosions of gas and dust and in accidents due to electricity , and no change in the fatality rate from explosives . The reductions in haulage accidents and in falls of roof and coal are particularly gratifying, because these two classes of accidents usually cause about 65 per cent of all fatalities in the coal-mining industry . This chapter presents data on occupational exposures from several sources. Data from compliance samples obtained by MSHA inspectors are presented in table 6-1 for coal mine dust and silica dust, and in tables 6-2 through 6-6 for metal fumes. Since these samples were taken for compliance monitoring rather than as part of a survey of the industry, it is difficult to predict how well they indicate actual exposures for all mining operations. In the coal industry, 7.8% of all respirable dust samples during 1986-1995 were above the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Of silica dust samples obtained during the 10-year period, 23.7% were above the PEL in coal, 16% in metal, 10.8% in nonmetal, 9.1% in stone, and 7.6% in sand and gravel. Of metal fume samples, silver samples showed the largest percentage above the PEL-approximately 48% of samples in both metal and nonmetal. Tables 6-7 and 6-8 present data on noise exposures from the MSHA "dual threshold" survey, which was published in the Federal Register [61 Fed. Reg. 66347 (1996)] as part of a proposed rule change for occupational noise exposure in mining. This study examined a group of samples obtained during 1991-1995 and compared the percent of samples that were above two separate specified limits. The first limit was the current noise standard, a time-weighted average of 90 dBA, calculated to include only exposures at 90 dBA and above. The second limit was a time-weighted average of 85 dBA, calculated to include exposures at 80 dBA and above. Tables 6-8 and 6-9 refer to musculoskeletal overload conditions examined in the National Occupational Health Survey of Mining (NOHSM) [NIOSH 1996]. Table 6-8 shows the operational definitions for each condition; table 6-9 shows the percentage of the workforce potentially exposed, by commodity. Across all commodities, a large proportion of workers were exposed to musculoskeletal overloads due to positioning of the neck and back; positioning and motion of the forearms, arms, and shoulders; heavy lifting; and positioning and movement of the lower limbs. The recorded overloads were defined in the survey and did not exceed any NIOSH, MSHA, or OSHA guidelines for musculoskeletal overloads. Further information on this survey appears in appendix A.

Identifying the properties of overlying rocks in underground mining operations is important to ensure the appropriate roof support design is used to maintain stability of the mine entries. Recently J. H. Fletcher & Co. developed a monitoring and control system for roof bolters for the underground mining industry. The system records the drilling parameters used during roof bolt drilling and the information can provide insight into the physical properties of the roof strata. The parameters include thrust, rotational speed, torque and velocity and the measurements are collected every 0.1 second during the operation. The drilling parameters were analyzed to determine the application of identifying the strength of rocks being drilled from the measurements. The data was converted into the specific energy of drilling which is a measure of the amount of energy required for removing a given unit of rock during a drilling operation. The laboratory studies completed to date indicate a fairly high correlation between the specific energy of drilling and the unconfined compressive strength of :he rocks that were drilled. Additionally, the drilling parameters were shown to be effective for identifying the presence of fractures or bed separations between rock layers. The thrust, torque and specific energy of drilling were all good indicators for identifying the fractures or separations. Regardless of the drilling parameters used during the drilling experiments, the location of the fractures were identified. In order to determine the application of the drilling parameters for identifying roof rock properties, two series of experiments were conducted. The first series of experiments used three "manufactured" roof layers that had various rock samples embedded in concrete blocks. The rock samples included three types of sandstone, marble, and argillite. Another concrete block was poured with foam inserts to simulate large bedding separations (2 to 8-in). Two other manufactured blocks were constructed using high-strength concrete with cardboard layers embedded to simulate smaller fractures or bedding separations. The size of the cardboard layers varied from 1/8- to 1-in thick. One of the blocks had the cardboard layers embedded at an inclined angle to determine the effect of the orientation on the drilling parameters. A series of experiments was conducted with the rotational speed and the penetration rate held constant and the thrust and torque allowed to vary. The information collected from the experiments is used to determine the application of the drilling parameter measurements for identifying rock properties, fractures and bedding separations.

The operation described herein differs from the usual practice in the Tri-State district in two important respects: (1) the ore is loaded into cars which are tramped to the shaft and hoisted on self-dumping cages, and (2) about 30 per cent of the ore is loaded by power shovels. The four-month period covered by the cost data appended at the end of the paper immediately followed a period of about one year during which the mine was shut down, and the expense incident to the resumption of operations is reflected in the costs. The first thing to consider in prevention of electric shock is the voltage of the circuit. No person can be sure that he will not be killed, even from a 110-volt circuit, if he makes proper contact with the circuit so as to cause the maximum current to pass through his body. As the voltage is increased to 250 volts, 500 volts, or 2,300 volts the danger from contact with the electric circuit is increased, Alternating current of the same nominal voltage is possibly more dangerous than direct current. Experience has taught us that both will cause death, and that if the fatalities from this source are to be kept low, certain precautions in the guarding of circuits must be observed.

The of odorants as a beans of detecting leakage of gases and atmospheres has been investigated extensively by chemists and engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and numerous reports as to its value have been published."

Urban refuse, cellulosic wastes, and sewage sludge have been converted to heavy oil by heating under pressure with carbon monoxide and steam. Conversions of the organic matter to oil, water, and gas have averaged near 90 percent at temperatures of 250° to 400° C and pressures of 1,500 to 5,000 psi. The yield of oil, based on the dry organic matter of the waste materials, is usually near 40 percent. This is the equivalent of more than 2 barrels of oil per ton of dry, ash-free waste material. The oil from urban refuse and cellulosic wastes has a sulfur content near 0.1 percent. This low sulfur content makes the oil from refuse a desirable source of fuel oil.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed three cores from the south Seep Ridge area of the P. R. Spring tar sand deposit of northeastern Utah. Four tar sand zones are indicated in the area. The zones range in average thickness from 13 to 24 ft. The total net thickness of the tar sand in the three coreholes ranges from 71 to 112 ft. The tar sand occurs between the depths of 27 and 254 ft. It has good porosity, 25.6 pct of bulk volume; high permeability before and after oil extraction, 819 and 2,218 md, respectively; but a relatively low oil saturation, 36.5 pct of pore volume. Gravity of the oil ranges from 8.20 to 16.5° API.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study that incorporates coal mining factors, coal recovery factors, and economic factors into the definition of an economically recoverable coal resource. The relationship between these factors to the Energy Information Administration's estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "Demonstrated Reserve Base"-is discussed. The Matewan 7-1/2 minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected as the initial study area. Results indicate that of the original 1,193 million tons of resource in the quadrangle, only 89 million tons (7.5%) are economically recoverable at a cost of $25 per ton or less. At the current production rate of 5.3 million tons per year, this represents only 16.8 years of remaining reserves.

Methane emission from two surface gob-degasification boreholes was measured by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation took place during mining of a 3,200-foot longwall panel in the Lower Kittanning coalbed in central Pennsylvania. The first hole was 500 feet from the start of mining, and the second hole was 2,200 feet. The first hole went on natural draft as soon as the longwall face passed it. This caused the methane flow in the return entries to drop 75 pct. In the 6 months required to complete the panel, the two holes emitted 69 MMcf of methane in varying percentages of concentration in air. In 3 years, the holes emitted a total of 150 MMcf of methane.

The sudden, violent collapse of large areas of room-and-pillar mines poses a special hazard for miners and mine operators. This type of failure, termed a 'cascading pillar failure' (CPF), occurs when one pillar in a mine layout fails, transferring its load to neighbouring pillars, which causes them to fail, and so forth. Recent examples of this kind of failure in coal, metal and nonmetal mines in the U.S.A. are documented. Mining engineers can limit the danger presented by these failures through improved mine design practices. Whether failure occurs in a slow, non-violent manner or in a rapid, violent manner is governed by the local mine stiffness stability criterion. This stability criterion is used as the basis for three design approaches to control cascading pillar failure in room-and-pillar mines-the containment approach, the prevention approach and the full extraction mining approach. These design approaches are illustrated with practical examples for coal mining at shallow depth. Cascading pillar failure {CPF) in room-and-pillar mines can go by many other names, such as `progressive pillar failure', `massive pillar collapse', 'domino-type failure' or 'pillar run'. In this kind of failure when one pillar collapses the load that it carried transfers rapidly to its neighbours, causing them to fail, and so forth. This failure mechanism can lead to the rapid collapse of very large mine areas. In mild cases only a few tens of pillars might fail; in extreme cases, however, hundreds, even thousands, of pillars can fail. CPF can have catastrophic effects on a mine, and sometimes these effects pose a greater risk to health and safety than the underlying ground-control problem. Usually, the CPF induces a devastating air blast as a consequence of the displacement of air from the collapse area. An air blast can disrupt the ventilation system totally by destroying ventilation stoppings, seals and fan housings. Flying debris can seriously injure or kill mining personnel. The CPF might also fracture a large volume of rock in the pillars and immediate roof and floor. In coal mines and certain other mines this can lead to the sudden release of large quantities of methane gas into the mine atmosphere; a methane explosion might result from the CPF. CPF is at the far end of the spectrum of unstable pillar failure. At the other end are slow `squeezes' that develop over days to weeks and, because of their slow progress, do not pose an immediate danger to mining personnel. There is ample warning time for men and machinery to get out of the way of the failure. In a CPF, however, the failure progresses so rapidly that men and equipment cannot be evacuated in time. Significant seismic energy is released as a consequence of the rapid failure and collapse. CPF should not be confused, however, with coal-mine bumps and rockbursts. In some cases the damage can appear similar, but the underlying mechanics are completely different. As will he shown later, the mechanics of CPF depend on the applied vertical stress and the post-failure, i.e. strain-softening, behaviour of the pillars. In a CPF pillars shed their applied load rapidly and have very little residual strength after failure. The collapse itself may release significant seismic energy, but otherwise the mine is seismically quiet. Alter a CPF the openings in the affected mine workings have usually closed completely. In contrast, coal-mine bumps and rockbursts occur in seismically active mines. Research has shown that coal-mine bumps and rockbursts are seismic events induced by mining that damage underground mine workings. Bumps and bursts are thus a subset of a much larger set of mining-induced seismic events.[ Only some of these seismic events damage mine workings; fortunately, most do not. The mechanisms by which a mining-induced seismic event can lead to a damaging coal-mine bump or rockburst is still a significant research area.2 After a bump or rockhursr the affected mine workings may or may not be completely closed. For example, in the coal-mine bump described by Soler and co-workers2 the mine workings remained open even though the pillars were destroyed during the bump event. Because CPF differs from a coal-mine bump or rockburst, the design approaches to control their occurrence also differ. The design recommendations developed here apply to CPF and not to bump- or burst-prone mines. Cascading pillar failure examples Unfortunately, CPF has occurred in room-and-pillar coal, metal and non-metal mines. The most infamous example is the Coalbrooke colliery in South Africa, where 437 miners perished where [si >1 3at1ttsumsus7car kky vArtMixiL7i nesafr tramwsamn ures] on 21 January, 1960.1 Table I summarizes the mining dimensions of 13 examples of rapid pillar collapse in U.S. coal mines. All occurred during the 1980s and 1990s, and all happened suddenly or without significant warning. Most resulted in air blasts and damage to the ventilation system. Table 2 gives the mining dimensions of six room-and-pillar metal and non-metal mines in the U.S.A. where failure occurred in all probability by the CPF mechanism. The collapse areas can be huge. Fortunately, some of these failures gave advance warning. At the lead-zinc mine slabbing from pillars and roof falls began four weeks prior to the main collapse.3 At the copper mine considerable rock noise and smaller failures preceded the main collapse by five days.5 At the copper-silver mine it is not known if nature provided a warning.6 Evidently, the trona mine collapsed without warning.7,8 Rock noise and other failure warnings preceded the silica mine collapse by three weeks. v The presence or absence of warnings at the salt mint is not known. to Most of these collapses induced a substantial air blast; damage to the ventilation systems was limited, however, to bent airdoors and a few downed stoppings, except at the trona mine where extensive damage to the ventilation system resulted.

"Respirable quartz cytotoxicity, as measured by erythrocyte hemolysis and pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase in vitro, is neutralized by boiling in water in glass test tubes for 10 to 40 minutes. The cytotoxicity is reduced to near zero by boiling l to IO mg quartz per milliliter water. For greater concentrations of quartz in water the hemolytic potential after 40 minutes of boiling approaches that of native quartz. Replacing the medium with fresh water midway through boiling results in full detoxification through 20 mg quartz per milliliter water. Pre-boiling the medium with silica reduces the detoxification effect. Detoxification persists after mild drying at l 10°C for 8 hours, and persists after three days of resuspension in water at room temperature.INTRODCJCTIONResearch underway to determine interactions of quartz and other mineral dust surfaces with pulmonary fluids and alveolar macrophages in culture led to the observation that when dusts were autoclaved in aqueous suspension, their cytotoxic effects on macrophages were suppressed, in some cases fully and even after several days incubation with the cells. This finding was in direct contradiction to earlier results from both short term macrophage lysosmal enzyme release assays, as well as longer term cytotoxicity assays from macrophages in culture; in those studies, dusts were steam autoclaved at 121°C with no liquid water but with steam present. 1.2 However detoxification under boiling conditions has been reported in other research. 3 It was decided to use the hemolysis assay to further investigate these findings, because of its sensitivity simplicity and cost.RESCULTS AND DISCCISSIONRespirable quartz dust used in this study was taken from a stock of crystalline silica, Min-U-Sil; obtained from Pennsylvania Sand Glass Corporation, fractionated in air with a particle classifier. The small size fraction retained for use was 80% less than S micrometer particle diameter, with an area equivalent median diameter of 1.24 micrometers as estimated by automated image analysis. The silica was at least 98.S mass percent silica as determined by X-ray energy spectrometric analysis; and the crystalline form was alpha-quartz as determined by X-ray diffraction. It's specific surface area was 3.97 square meters per gram as determined by nitrogen adsorption isotherm methods. I"

"INTRODUCTION The predominant characteristic of powdered mica is the thin -plate shape of the particulars, and the thinner the plates, the more enhanced is this characteristic. Consequently, it is frequently desirable to grade mica according to the thickness of the plates. Concerning the various possible methods for grading mica, very little has been published. There is also no information on the relative quantities of mica per given range of plate thickness. This paper presents a graphical method that shows how these quantities are distributed and how the different methods of grading compare.CUMULATIVE BULK DENSITYBulk density, which is an indirect measure of the plate thickness, was determined in a small cylindrical cup of 3.37 cubic centimeters volume. The mica was placed in the cup under a standard procedure. The densities thus measured checked these determined in a 273 cubic centi¬meter cup with less than a 2 percent error.In calculating cumulative densities it is important to know how they are averaged. In any grading operation the bulk density of a series of fractions is determined. Starting with the lowest density fraction, the cumulative percent under-density can be calculated through the various fractions. It is possible that quantity may be measured by volume or weight and that the averaging may be done by a number of methods. However, experimentally it has been shown that the quantity must be by volume and that the averaging must be arithmetic. This is illustrated in table 1, in which the calculated and actual bulk densities are listed."

"In the January 3 issue of Iron Trade Review, Sweetser2, in referring to the problem of coke combustibility, points out that, ""Someone should formulate a rule for the rate of flow of coke through the zone of coke combustion that now appears to be confined to a comparatively restricted volume in front of the tuyeres,"" In formulating such a rule it is necessary to distinguish clearly between combustibility, a property of the fuel, and rate of combustion, which is determined by the rate at which air is supplied to the fuel bed. The rate of carbon gasified at the tuyeres of a blast furnace is independent of coke combusti-bility. A fast-burning coke will burn in a more restricted volume than a slow-burning coke, but both types of fuel will be consumed at rates determined by the supply of oxygen,A number of the definitions of combustibility that have appeared in technical literature relate more closely to rate of combustion than to combustibility. Perrott and Kinney) have correctly defined it as follows: ""Combustibility of coke from the standpoint of its use in, the blast furnace is inversely proportional to the mean rate of gasification per unit volume of the combustion zone, assuming other factors remain constant,"" Combustibility of coke refers therefore to those properties that determine the size or extent of the combustion zone. Relative differences in these properties can be measured by the depth of the fuel bed required to convert oxygen from the air into carbon monoxide."

PRODUCTION of carbon black decreased 4 percent in 1961. Output in the major producing States of Texas and Louisiana decreased 1 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Production of channel black continued downward, declining 10 percent in 1961 compared with 9 percent in 1960. Furnace black production also decreased 3 percent from 1960. Total domestic sales, however, increased 2 percent, Sales to most major consumers increased, but sales to the ink industry decreased 10 percent. Producer's stocks decreased 5,083,000 pounds during the year. Exports decreased 4 percent. SCOPE OF REPORT Carbon black is a very pure grade of quasi-graphitic carbon; particle diameters range from 50 to 5,000 angstrom units. Annual reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines by operators of all commercial plants in the United States.

A Bureau of Mines feasibility study on the use of tracer pulses to assess the degree of fracturing in an underground formation consisted of three phases: 1. A laboratory study on sand packs and open tubes, which developed a correlation between dispersion of the pulse and size of the flow channels. 2. A test on a retort, 11 feet in diameter and 45 feet high, packed with shale rubble. Void volume was measured, but evaluation of channel size was not possible because of interference from the space unoccupied by the matrix. 3. A field test on an explosively fractured shale formation. Pressure, flow, and transit time led to qualitative estimates of fracture pattern, but quantitative detection of dispersion in the formation was overwhelmed by dispersion effects in the well.

Methane in coal constitutes a serious hazard during mining. Draining the methane from large blocks of coal in advance of mining is an effective method of improving the safety and efficiency of coal mining. Because of the similarity of the two gases, drained methane can be recovered and added to pipeline supplies of natural gas. To effectively apply advance drainage techniques and recover drained gas, a gross estimate of the methane content of coal is necessary. Using data from previous investigations, the virgin reserves of the Pittsburgh coal in the central and southwestern parts of Washington County, Pa., are estimated at over 1.5 billion tons, with a methane content of 50 to 100 fts/ton. The Pittsburgh bed in this area of approximately 265 mi2 contains over 130 billion ft3 of methane.

Develop methods to detect and repair poorly functioning dust collectors on roof bolters. Approach In conjunction with a research project to reduce silica dust in coal mines, a variety of roof bolting machines operating under different conditions were examined to find out how much these machines were contributing to the silica dust problem. Results The investigation concluded that if the bolting machines' dust collector is properly maintained, very little dust can be measured in the air, even with minimal airflow over the bolter. Poor maintenance, however, frequently results in high dust levels. Three major problem areas were found. These were: (1) filter leaks, which allowed dust to escape, (2) accumulations of dust in the collection system, and (3) low airflow at the bit due to hose, fitting, and relief valve leaks.
