Heat contents were measured for Na2CaSi04 and Na2Ca2S02 between 298° and 1,300° K, for Na2Ca2Si309 between 298° and 1,500° K, and for Na4CaSi3O9 between 298° and 1,350° K. Copper-block drop calorimetry was employed. Reversible, first-order transitions were found for Na2CaSi04 and Na2Ca2Si309. The transition for Na2CaSi04 is at 830° K with a heat absorption of 160 cal/mole; that for Na2CagSi309 occurs at 750° K with a heat absorption of 1,550 cal/mole. Results for the other two silicates showed no irregularities. A table of heat content and entropy increments above 298.15° K and heat con-tent equations are included for use in thermodynamic calculations.

Analyze variably saturated flow in mining and other environmentally sensitive settings through the use of personal computer (PC) based software. The Problem There is an increasing need for mining companies to quantify water contaminants and their migration in the unsaturated zone. New and innovative computer models are therefore necessary to more accurately assess the potential impact of mining activities on groundwater resources and the environment. Applications for unsaturated flow modeling include (1) assessment of the impact of surface or underground extraction mining on flow conditions; (2) assessment of various hydrologic designs for resource recovery, such as in heap leaching or in situ leach mining; (3) assessment of the transport of conservative nonrcactive constituents in response to migration from spoil piles, or acid mine drainage; and (4) assessment of any combination of the above to facilitate expeditious permitting for mining operations. Since the mid 1970's there has been a proliferation of mathematical models and procedures for solving unsaturated now problems; however, few of these approaches have been integrated into software for public use. Commercially available unsaturated flow software models typically are limited to a single application and have restricted approaches. For example, computer codes that solve the unsaturated flow problem based on an analytic expression arc restricted to a simple geometric shape, homogeneous and isotropic materials, and provide only information regarding pressure and flow conditions in specified wells. The variably saturated computer codes that take advantage of the finite difference or finite element approach arc often restricted to either steady state or transient solutions; utilize one specific moisture-retention relationship and moisture-dependent permeability function; do not account for hysteresis; and are used with specific hardware such as a mainframe or work station. This restricts their use because they arc hard to interface, and arc often poorly documented, support dependent, and expensive. The mining community needs a flexible, more broadly based, variably saturated fluid flow simulator for the PC-platform to more accurately predict fluid movement in the mining environment.

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). Several commercial processes for reclaiming used lubricating oil were duplicated on a laboratory bench scale. Laboratory tests were selected and in some instances modified to determine the physical properties of each oil produced. In addition, the hydrocarbon composition of some samples was determined using a liquid chromatographic technique, and compared with the composition of new oil in order to determine the severity of the re-refining technique. Selected samples of reprocessed oil were reformulated with an additive package for further estimates of quality as determined by wear, corrosion, foaming, and oxidation stability tests. Additionally, several samples of commercially re-refined oil and new oil were obtained and physical properties were determined for comparative studies.

Equipment is the primary cause of injury in 11% of all mining accidents and a secondary cause in another 10%. Purchasers should select new equipment carefully to ensure that the machine incorporates good ergonomic design criteria that maximize the safety of their mine workers. One potential problem area is the workstation-the control center of the machine. Safety problems often occur when the workstation provides insufficient clearance or visibility to the operator or has controls that are difficult to reach. This is especially true for underground mines, where confined space is an issue. In reclined or stooped postures, operators will have less strength and agility and often experience reduced visibility. We have conducted and published much research in Human Factors design of mining machine workstations. This information is currently being compiled into a series of Human Factors design recommendation reports. The reposts dl cover many topics, including workstation layout, control design, seating, and visibility. Each topic has a list of basic or first principles of design. Understanding these principles is the key to designing or purchasing a workstation that is both safe and efficient. Following is a sampling of these main topics and first principles.

In resource development, discovery of new natural gas deposits in the North Sea and the continued development of Australia's bauxite and iron ore resources, making this country a major source for these commodities, were significant.

Mercury exists in coal at very low levels; the structure of coal, the vapor pressure of mercury, and its almost universal occurrence introduce unusual problems into the analytical methods. Round-robin analyses by several laboratories, each using its own techniques, indicate that the average mercury content of coal is about 0.2 part per million. Some western coals are as low as 0.05 ppm.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, cooperated with Tecrete Industries Pty. Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1'01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01' 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.

"The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"

"Electron spin resonance (ESRJ spectrum of the hydroxyl (· OH) radical spin adduct with .the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrrolintt-N-oxide has been obtained in suspensions of freshly ground quartz particles. The concentration of the spin adduct (and hence of the • OH radicals) increases with the amount of grinding. The dust's potential for the generation of the· OH radicals is maximum when fresh (i.e., immediately after grinding) and decreases to 50% in about a day on storage in air. Studies involving metal chelates .indicate that the • OH radical formation involves mainly the silica surface and H20 rather than the Fenton reaction. The results suggest that hydroxyl radical reaction(s) could be important in the lipid peroxidation and fibrogenicity by quartz dust, particularly .in acute silicosis. INTRODUCTIONIn this paper we report on our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of the formation of hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in aqueous suspensions of freshly crushed quartz particles. This work was undertaken with a view to find possible clues to the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of quartz-induced fibrogenicity, commonly known as silicosis. We noted that while silicosis is one of the major health hazards in coal and mineral industries, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly ·understood (Reiser and Last, 1979; Singh and .Rahman, 1987). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the action of quartz particles on the biological membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (Parazzi et - al., 1968). A possible clue to the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz particles, in terms of the role of oxygenated free radicals, is suggested by the following observations. A suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported (Gabor et al., 1975; Koike et al., 1982) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids. Hydroxyl (· OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985) and of initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes. (Fong et al., 1973). Arong other lines, it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids, and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates· OH radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985). Thus • OH radicals (and also other oxygenated species such as Oi, 10 2, and H20 2) might be expected to play a role in the toxicity of quartz. Earlier studies of the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of H2O 2 (Kalbanev et al., 1980), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species. However, we are not aware of any report of the detection of • OH radicals in quartz reactions, and thus the present study was undertaken. Since it-is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short lifetime) in aqueous media, the • OH radicals cannot be detected via ESR directly (Finkelstein et al., 1980; Buettner, 1982) we have used .ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (Finkelstein et al., 1980) for studying the· OH formation. The results show that· OH radicals are indeed formed in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz; thus pointing to ·a possible new clue to the cytotoxicity of freshly formed quartz particles and thereby to silica fibrogenicity."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a computer-assisted Ground Control Management System (GCMS) for near realtime evaluation of underground coal mine ground conditions. The GCMS combines existing mine-monitoring system and sensor technology with automated computer analysis techniques to enhance the acquisition, analysis, and display of geostructural data. The GCMS, which combines mine structure data with other information, such as geologic conditions and mine layout, has provided information on mining-induced stress transfer and pressure buildup associated with several ground control events. The GCMS collects and analyzes shield-leg pressure, ground pressure, and strata movement data to evaluate the structural behavior of an active Western U.S. Iongwall coal mine. Field data are transmitted over a dedicated phone line to the USBM Denver Research Center (DRC) mine monitoring laboratory, 240 km (150 miles) from the mine site. Real-time collection, processing, and analysis of mine structure and shield pressure information has proved to be an effective method for near-face ground conditions while mining progresses. The GCMS provides the mine operator with information to rapidly identify and manage potentially hazardous ground conditions while mining is in progress.

The mine ventilation system consists of the fan, the roadways, and the regulatory devices. Sufficient fresh air must reach each working face in the mines to render harmless noxious, toxic, and respirable pollutants and to provide for the breathing of men. This is achieved by the proper selection of fan and regulatory devices. Because a mining system is dynamic, the mine ventilation system must also be dynamic. In short, mine ventilation engineers are frequently called upon to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Given a mine or the projected plan of a mine, what fan must be selected for the quantities specified in the section? At what point in its characteristic must it be operated? Are any speed changes or changes in blade settings warranted? 2. What should be the regulation in a section to insure cer¬tain desired quantity in that section? How does it affect the overall ventilation system? 3. What are the effects of driving a new shaft? Where should it be located? What size fan should be installed in the shaft? How does this affect the overall ventilation sys¬tem? 4. How much quantity increases can be obtained by cleaning up falls and streamlining roadways and by driving addi¬tional parallel airways? These questions are in no way exhaustive, nor are answers easy. Most of the operational and planning problems discussed above are to a cer¬tain extent solved by ventilation engineers using rules of thumb from experience. Both natural conditions and regulatory requirements have changed so drastically recently that use of scientific methods in ventilation planning and of faster methods in evaluating the plans is a must. Concentration profiles of low-pressure, slightly lean CH4-02-Ar flames have been measured in situ for the following unstable species: oxygen atom, hydrogen atom, hydroxyl radical, methyl radical, and formyl radical. The observed maximum mole fractions were 2.0X10-2 for H, 1.1X10-2 for OH, and 0.8X10-2 for 0; the maxima occurred in the recombination zone. Methyl and formyl radicals have maximum mole fractions in the reaction zone of 2.2x10-3 and 6x10-5, respectively.

Illegitimate loads on a mine dc power distribution system can be detected by measuring a superimposed ac current. To implement such a scheme, a 10-volt, 3-kHz voltage is applied at each dc power substation. By this means, the mine dc power distribution network, consisting of a feeder and trolley wires with a grounded rail return, is caused to serve also as a 3-kHz ac distribution network.

During the past few years the use of mechanical equipment for the loading and transportation of coal at the working face has rapidly increased . Many mining officials are of the opinion that mechanical methods have tended to reduce the hazards of mining, and a number of statements have been made to this effect . Little actual data upon which to base conclusions in regard to the relative safety of various methods of mining have been made available . While it may be possible that these systems of mechanical mining are inherently less hazardous , obvious dangers should not be disregarded in the belief that the mere act of installing mechanical loading equipment automatically brings about better accident records . The same rules and regulations , modified to meet the new regime must be applied with the same discipline as heretofore . By diligent study and application there is reason to believe that new methods of concentrated mining can be utilized with at least a possibility of increased accident performance . With the idea of preventing accidents by taking available precautions against their occurrence , attention should be directed to the dangers that exist where room and face conveyors are in operation . Due to the cost pressure prevalent in the mining industry at the present time mechanical means are often used in an attempt to decrease cost of production. The management , after having spent considerable sums of money for new equipment , is expected by stockholders and investors to show results by increasing tonnage and reducing operating costs . Consequently the operating officials apply the same pressure to local mine officials to obtain results . The natural reaction of the superintendent and mine foreman is to secure the maximum production from the new method , and unfortunately safety is frequently , if not generally , sacrificed to this end . In many instances , operators of new types of mechanical loaders are difficult to secure and after being obtained are difficult to hold , especially if the new equipment is more or less in the experimental stage . The tendency is to handle the machine operators with " gloved hands " and to permit many unsafe practices which ordinarily would not be allowed, in order to keep from antagonizing them and losing their services . Although these unsafe practices become habitual and even uneconomical , conditions thus established are difficult , sometimes impossible , to change .

This report presents a discussion of the spectra of 39 condensed thiophenes in which the structure includes at least 1 benzene ring. The vibrational bands present in three regions of the infrared spectra of these thiophenes were interpreted by comparing the similarities of the spectra of condensed thiophenes with the spectra of substituted benzenes. In the overtone-combination region 23 of the 39 condensed thiophenes had spectra which contained sufficient detail to be usable for correlating this region of the spectrum with the appropriate benzene spectrum. In the in-plane deformation region it was possible to make correlations for the vibrations of 18 of the 39 condensed thiophenes whose infrared spectra were studied. In the out-of-plane deformation region the C-H out-of-plane vibrations for hydrogen on benzene rings in the condensed thiophenes can be correlated using known data from substituted benzenes.

Reduce rockfall fatalities and injuries by using innovative blasting practices to reduce damage to the rock at the excavation limits with little or no increase in cost. The Problem Falls of highwall have been a leading cause of fatalities, injuries, and equipment damage in the surface mining industry. Although the number of highwall falls is not great, when such an incident does occur it is about 14 times more likely to be fatal or result in severe injury and damage to equipment than other types of surface mine accidents. Overbreak or damage to the rock from poor or improper blasting practices is a major factor contributing to rock falls. Presplitting or cushion blasting is the technique most often recommended for improved wall control. This type of blasting however, adds to drilling and blasting costs and is not universally accepted by the industry. Air gap presplitting techniques, also called air decks, are currently being used in some mines as a less costly alternative to conventional presplitting. Approach Blasting can cause highwall damage, but proper blasting techniques have been shown to reduce the magnitude of rockfall problems. In preventing rock falls, it is important to maintain the natural strength of the rock structure to the greatest extent possible. Improved blasting practices have three main advantages: 1) they are preventive rather than corrective in nature; 2) they are cost effective; and 3) they have a very low impact on the mining operation when properly implemented. New ways of evaluating highwall integrity, such as seismic refraction tomography, were investigated.

MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations and dynamic transient-state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under the influence of natural ventilation, fans, fires, or any combination of these MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influences (varying outside temperatures), and internal influences (fires) Extensive output enables detailed, quantitative analysis of the effects that the alteration will cause to the ventilation system The program was developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU), Houghton, MI, with support from the Bureau of Mines A personal computer (PC) version of the program was completed under contract for the Bureau by MTU The purpose of this report is to document the installation and use of the PC version of the program MFIRE

Briefly, a permissible schedule of the Bureau of Mines establishes certain minimum standards for safety; it gives details of test methods adopted to determine whether these standards have been met, and a list of charges for such tests. Any manufacturer has the privilege of submitting his product for test in accordance with the conditions outlined in the schedules. His action is wholly voluntary, for the Federal Government has no jurisdiction as to what equipment shall be used in mines, this authority being left to the various States. When the product of a manufacturer has met the schedule requirements, he is permit¬ted to advertise this fact and to attach an approval plate with the bureau's seal to each machine he makes that is identical in every way with the equipment tested, inspected, and approved by the bureau. This work of approval has grown by the addition of new schedules until at present a great many mines are using one or more classes of permissible equipment, and there is still a demand for other approved apparatus in the ever-widening field of electrically operated machinery. The safety of electrical equipment of this type depends on four fundamentals, namely, (1) correct principles of design; (2) proper assembly of parts at the factory; (3) proper assembly and installation of equipment at the mine; (4) and proper operation and maintenance after installation. The first two factors are within the province of the manufacturer. The bureau either inspects and tests several models of one product, such as electric cap lamps, or one model, such as an electric motor. If this series of tests proves satisfactory, the manufacturer is given the privilege of making other appliances, and assembling them in the same way; the approval plate he attaches is his guaranty that the equipment is identical with the one tested and inspected by the bureau.
