The Bureau of Mines assisted the Rocky Mountain Energy Co. in a pilot-scale in situ leaching experiment at Casper, Wyo., to determine if sulfuric acid can be used as a cost-effective alternative lixiviant (leachant) for uranium in situ leaching. This experiment, which lasted more than 2 years, is the first fully documented pilot-scale operation in which the leaching-restoration cycle was completed using sulfuric acid instead of the more common carbonate-bicarbonate leachant This report describes activities at the experimental site, presents extensive geochemical data from startup to site restoration, compares laboratory and field experiments, and discusses the environmental aspects of acid leaching. The data showed that sulfuric acid is apparently an effective leaching solution. Three to five grams of acid per liter of ground water resulted in a production solution grade of 80 to 100 ppm uranium. Restoration was successful, but required extended flushing. The pH was the last chemical parameterto return to baseline, requiring about 350 days. This was longer than was predicted in laboratory simulations. The data also showed that mobilization of toxic elements such as selenium, arsenic, radium, thorium, and molybdenum stayed within reasonable limits and quickly fell back to preleach concentrations during restoration.

The Bureau of Mines developed by core drilling the Cove Meadow copper property, also known as the Patterson property, from May 6, 1949, to August 6, 1949. It is in the Cove Meadow mining district, northwestern Humboldt County, Nev., 102 miles northwest of Winnemucca. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves in a mineralized shear zone in andesite that has been partly explored by several surface cuts and two shallow underground workings. Production from this zone to August 1, 1,949, was 98 tons of hand-sorted copper ore assaying 5.1 percent. The development work performed by the Bureau of Mines comprised a study of the geology, mapping the area, sampling the outcrops, and exploring by diamond drilling the shear zone adjacent to the fault. Seven holes were drilled for a total of 1,246 feet. Mineral reserves indicated by the project are confined to a length of 500 feet along the strike.

"Using. ESR spin trapping methodology, evidence was obtained that fresh quartz dust in a cell-free aqueous medium generated hydroxyl - and possibly superoxide radicals. The hydroxyl radical generation potential decreases on storing of fresh quartz dust in ambient air and on the addition of either catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. The role of quartz related radicals in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis is suggested from these findings.IntroductionThis report summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of oxygenated radical formation by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its inihibition by radical scavengers. This study was undertaken with to elucidate the primary biochemical mechanism involved in the development of silicosis (Farber, 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). In particular the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood (Farber. 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979;). It is generally believed that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process (Farber, 1983; Parazzi et al., 1968). Thus the surface characteristics of the quartz particles have been the subject of several recent studies (Bolls et al.. 1983; Dalai et al., 1986; Fubini et al., 1987). Recently, We reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates free radicals which decay with time, and that these free radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to aged dust from the same stock (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al.. 1988). The formation of Si• and. SiO--type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, Gulumian and van Wyk (1987) have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity. However, these authors did not report the effects of metal chelators, so it was not clear as to whether the detected -OH radicals simply resulted from the Fenton reaction involving exogenous metal ion contaminants. Earlier, Marasas and Harington (1960) reported that quartz particles could function as an oxidant in a number of in vitro oxidations, including the hydroxylation of proline and lysine. They postulated that silica dusts, on reacting with water, could release H2O2 which might have the potential to react with various biological constituents and thus cause tissue damage. In fact, Gabor and coworkers (Gabor and Anca, 1974; Gabor et al., 1975) suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some 'factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radicals capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently Weitzman and Graceffa (1984) reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of • OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work indicated that lipid peroxidation may be one of the mechanism by which asbestos produces tissue injury (Weitzman and Weitberg, 1985). This is significant because • OH radicals are capable of causing peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membrane (Fong et al., 1973). In fact, the formation of oxygenated species in reactions involving quartz was suspected since Kolbanev et al. (1980) reported the detection of H2O2 in the reaction of fresh quartz particle with aqueous medium. Fiber optic systems are being deployed in locations where explosive gas atmospheres are normally present or are present under fault conditions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH, PRL) conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers conducted experiments to estimate the mean and standard deviation of laser powers needed to ignite 6% methane-air atmospheres using single mode optical fiber tips covered by two types of iron oxide (Fe304 and (FeMn)203) mixed with a ceramic adhesive. The iron oxides, heated by a 1064 nm continuous wave laser, ignited the methane-air mixtures ,at similar powers. The minimum igniting power and maximum non-igniting power (10 tests) were 407 and 350 mW, respectively, using a 62.5 pm fiber. Laser beams guided by 125 and 80 pm diameter cladding single mode fibers produced similar methane-air igniting powers. Ignition was not observed using coal particles at powers that produced ignition with the iron oxides. Threshold ignition delays using the single mode fiber were approxinlately proportional to the inverse square of the igniting power. Ignition delays were significantly longer than the reported activation time for a comnlercial fiber optic power limiter. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers. The Bureau of Mines conducted small-scale batch and semicontinuous tests on the reduction of zinc sulfide with iron according to the reaction ZnS + Fe ? FeS + Zn to determine reaction kinetics in the temperature range 1,000° to 1,400° C and to investigate the potential use of a scrap iron reductant. Batch tests indicated that a temperature of at least 1,300° C with a 1:1 mole ratio of Fe to ZnS is needed for good zinc recovery. Semicontinuous tests were conducted, using four zinc concentrate samples, containing various percentages of copper, cadmium, and lead, which were reacted with iron and iron contaminated with iron oxide and tin in an externally heated graphite furnace. Analysis of the zinc metal and FeS matte reaction products showed cadmium to be entirely in the zinc metal, copper to be in the FeS matte, and lead to be about 60 pct in the zinc metal and 40 pct in the matte. Tin reported to the matte, and none was detected above the O.OS-pct level in the zinc. Sulfur dioxide was not detected in the offgas when up to 20 pct of the iron was replaced by Fe203.

This report covers a phase of an extraction project carried out as part of a research program on rare-earth technology. The current project--the production of pure cerium compounds--is an intermediate step between ore processing and metal reduction. In this connection, a study on a separatory-funne1 scale was made on nonreducing extractants for recovering cerium (IV) from tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and of methods for recovering the cerium nitrate from the strip solution. Dilute sulfuric acid was found to be 100 percent effective in stripping cerium (IV). Several precipitants were effective in recovering the cerium from the strip solution, and ethanol was especially promising. A scaled-up investigation was made into the use of spray-tower type equipment to perform the function of extracting, washing, and stripping. This equipment, referred to as the pressure-bubbler, utilized the system developed on the separatory-funnel scale. Feed solutions were prepared from a bastnasite concentrate by two techniques. Of these, the sulfated bastnasite solution was most successful, resulting in 86-percent recovery of the cerium at 99.7+-percent purity.

The work of the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines may be considered to have had its beginning in April , 1909 , when H. H. Clark was , appointed electrical engineer in the U. S. Geological Survey. The first manuscript prepared by members of this section was Miners Circular 5, which was issued in October , 1911. During each succeeding year additional papers have been published dealing with questions relating to electrical safety. Since 1916 the electrical section has also conducted laboratory investigations on flame safety lamps and gas- detecting devices and has published reports relating thereto . The following selected list of publications covering safety studies and activities of the electrical section has been prepared for the convenience of those who wish to keep themselves advised concerning electrical safety matters . The list includes only such publications as are applicable to present-day prac tices .

In a cooperative effort between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research, with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur has been investigated. The first step in the conversion scheme involves reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide. Effects of temperature, catalyst, reaction time, and type of reductant (carbon monoxide and coal) are discussed. It was determined that phosphogypsum could be reduced to calcium sulfide at 850° to 1,000° C using either coal or carbon monoxide as the reductant. The required temperature was lowered to 750° C using ferric oxide or magnetite as a catalyst for the reduction reaction. Results indicate that as the volatiles content of the coal is increased, reaction temperature may be decreased to obtain a given conversion, or if the reaction temperature is maintained constant, the conversion can be increased. Best results were 95- to 100-pct conversion using a high-volatile coal at 800° to 850° C. Addition of a catalyst increased calcium sulfide yield when low- or medium-volatile coals were used as reductants, but had little effect when high-volatile coals were used.

The preface of the United States Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction contains the following paragraphs: One of the most important inquiries that Congress has authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct relates to health condi- tions among those engaged in the mineral industries. Investigations made early with a view to bettering these conditions demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured miners, as, under the difficulties inherent to mining and other mineral industries; wounds seemingly unimportant, if not treated promptly, may become infected and possibly cause permanent crippling or even death of the porach. In the past many seriously injured persons have been treated by fellow workers ignorant of approved means of treatment and transportation and have been handled in such a manner as to cause suffering and to accentuate injuries to such a degree as to bring about permanent disablement. Accordingly, the need of general instruction in first aid became apparent. It must be recognized that the conditions in and about the mines, mills, smelters, quarries, oil fields, etc., usually present difficulties not found in large industrial centers where experienced surgeons are available and hospitals close at hand. Many mines are isolated and, when an accident occurs several miles underground, there may be a serious lapse of time before the injured person can be brought to the surface and taken to the hospital or given attention by a sur- geon who may have to come a long distance. Under such conditions it has been frequently demonstrated that, if effective first aid is not given, the injured person may die or become permanently crippled... First-aid instruction has been found to be an excellent aid3in pre- venting accidents. This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Page concentrator of the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Page mine and mill are located on Silver Creek, 3 miles west of Kellogg, Idaho, and 1 mile south of United States Highway No. 10. Supplies and concentrates are hauled by truck over an automobile road which connects Highway No. 10 with the property. The concentrator has capacity to treat 300 tons of ore per day and utilizes all-flotation methods of treatment. Power is supplied from the main line of the Washington Water Power Co. which runs from Spokane, Wash., to Kellogg, Idaho. Water is obtained from the mine and also from a well which is situated 1 mile distant from the concentrator and about 600 feet in elevation below the concentrator.

This paper is one of a series prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with milling methods and costs. In view of the current revival of interest in gold mining, information dealing with practices and costs in the development of gold properties is apropos. Milling practice at a small gold property in the prospect stage is described where, with a small outlay for plant and equipment, development has been carried on for about 20 months on the proceeds of the mill operation with little additional expenditure. The paper shows about what may be expected as to costs at a small property operated under northern climatic conditions and with rigid economy throughout the plant.

In 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 2 acre North Sisters Rocks Wilderness Study Area (OR-12-8) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in Curry County, Oregon, about 15 miles north from Gold Beach. No mines, prospects, or mining claims were located inside the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. Stone from the study area could be quarried and used for construction purposes; however, two nearby quarries have sufficient stone to satisfy local construction needs. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and mineral resource potential of the North Sisters Rocks WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the North Sisters Rocks WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

In 1984, as part of a project to evaluate Alaskan occurrences of certain critical and strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated a columbium-bearing regolith on upper Idaho Gulch, near Tofty, AK. The regolith is derived from weathering of a dolomitic marble and consists mostly of iron oxide minerals with accessory apatite, zircon, xenotime, rutile, monazite, and the columbium minerals aeschynite, columbite, and ilmenorutile. Two regolith lenses contain 340,000 lb of columbium resources at an average grade of 0.07 pct. Calculated composite concentrates from two regolith samples (approximately 200 lb each) contained 53 and 57 pct of the columbium at grades of 0.97 and 0.86 pct, respectively. In each case the grade could be improved to 1.1 pct Cb with a sacrifice of 9-pct recovery. The regolith's mineralogy, trace-element geochemistry, and similarity to descriptions of other columbium-enriched regoliths suggest that the underlying marble may be a carbonatite. The lack of associated alkalic igneous rocks and the stratiform nature of the regolith, however, may be interpreted as evidence for sedimentary origin of the marble. The marble and regolith are a lode source for some of the minerals in the Idaho Gulch placer deposit.

"The United States Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the State of Utah and the City of Salt Lake in an investigation of methods of abating the smoke nuisance in Salt Lake City. In the course of this work samples of the atmosphere have been collected and analyzed in an attempt to determine the part played by sulphur dioxide or smelter gases in polluting the air at Salt Lake City.A fairly wide-spread opinion exists in Salt Lake City that the smelters contribute appreciably to the smoke nuisance. The gases discharged from the smelter stacks are believed (1) to float over the city in a heavy blanket which prevents the smoke from rising, and (2) to unite with the water vapor in the air to form corrosive fogs injurious to health and property.The first of these theories seems untenable. If the gas did not mix with air it would sink, owing to its heavier specific gravity, and form a blanket an the earth. Actually, the gas diffuses rapidly in air and any part reaching Salt Take must he thoroughly diluted. Perhaps sulphur dioxide in sufficient concentration might aid in fog formation. The more obvious nuisance, however, would be the injury to health and vegetation.The Garfield smelter is 16 miles west of the city, The Murray smelter 8 miles south, and the Midvale smelter 12 miles south. Under normal operating conditions, a relatively small amount of solid matter is discharged from these stacks. The toxic gaseous constituent of the discharge is sulphur dioxide, it is being discharged from the smelters the year round. If they are a factor in the city's smoke problem, the concentration of this gas in the air of the city should be appreciable and should increase toward the smelters, the con centration being highest with a south or a west wind."

"Summary: In this report the differential regulation of NF-KB and nitric oxide (NO) was investigated in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 following exposure to a mineral dust (silica) and /or an endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS). The results indicated that silica and LPS can significantly induce the activation of NF-KB as well as elicit enhanced production of NO in RAW 264.7 cells as part of an early inflammatory response mechanism. A 24-hour time-course study showed that NO release from these cells continued to increase following the initial stimulus by LPS or silica. In contrast, activation of NF-KB was maximal at 6 hours and then showed a steady decline to 24 hours. The production of NO was suppressed by protease inhibitor and antioxidant, both of which block the activation of NF-KB. Surprisingly, the use of an NO synthase inhibitor resulted in an enhancement of NF-JCB activation. These findings suggest that NO produced in macrophage cells in response to an inflammatory stimulus like silica or LPS my be linked to a negative feedback role on the activation of NF-KB. It is now accepted that nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in the inflammation response process when macrophage cells are activated by a pro-inflammatory stimulus (l). Production of NO is dependent on the activity of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Up until now, at least three distinct genes have been described which encode different isoforms of NOS. NOS has been cloned from a variety of different mammalian cells, including constitutive neuron NOS, constitutive endothelium NOS and inducible NOS (2). Macrophages appear to be the principal cellular source for the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) activated in response to an inflammatory producing event. The mechanisms subserving the regulation of the iNOS gene and NO production have been under intense investigation in recent years (3-5). Several binding sites for transcriptional factors have been identified in the promoter region of iNOS gene, including NF-lCB, AP-1, NF-IL6, Oct-I to cite a few (5). NF-KB appears to play a"

Capital and operating costs were estimated using a wet suppression, fabric filter, and a combination system of the two for hypothetical hard rock stone crushing plants located in central Pennsylvania, operating at 300, 600, and 1,000 tons per hour. Fixed capital expenditure for the dust abatement systems ranged from $49,129 to $249,162. Annual operating costs for the dust abatement systems ranged from $8,394 to $46,606 (0.9 to 3.2 cents per ton). If these dust abatement systems are properly sized, installed, and maintained, efficiencies approaching 95 percent can be expected for reduction in weight of dust particles emitted before control.

Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals 4/ and investigations of their chemical and physical properties. 5/ The coal represented by the sample from Weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the as from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.

Material and energy balances for stockpiled lignite were calculated by computer simulation techniques to determine the occurrence of spontaneous heating. Data on properties of lignite which affect spontaneous heating were required. In some cases, best values from reported data were utilized; in other cases, new data were developed. These include specific studies on the rate and conditions that influence oxidation, heat of oxidation, heat of wetting, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and permeability of stockpiles to air. These data are presented and discussed in detail for possible application to other studies. Results of computer simulations confirm past field experience on the storage of lignite containing as-mined moisture, and predict a greater risk of heat occurrence in stockpiles of dried lignite where experience is lacking. Successful storage was predicted for dried lignite of 20 pct moisture content, if it were cooled after drying and compacted to an interparticle void fraction of 9 pct (bulk density of 67 lb/cu ft) compared to 10 pet void fraction (72 lb/cu ft) for as-mined lignite.
