The successful development of a titanium prototype of the 81-mm. mortar base plate for the Army Ordnance Corps is outlined in this report. Information is presented dealing with forming, forging, and machining, welding and assembly techniques, and design changes relative to this prototype. INTRODUCTION The work of the Federal Bureau of Mines in making ductile titanium available2/ has resulted in the establishment of a new industry. Owing to its strategic importance and the combination of low density and high strength, titanium has received considerable attention as a structural metal. Titanium's favorable strength-to-weight ratio is of particular importance to the Army Ordnance for equipment that is transported by airplane or by foot soldiers.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a pallet loading dust control system designed to lower the dust exposure of workers during the bag stacking process at mineral processing facilities. The system makes bag stacking much easier because the pallet height remains constant throughout the entire bag stacking cycle through the use of a hydraulic lift table. The system uses a push-pull ventilation technique to capture the dust generated during bag stacking. A low-volume, high-velocity blower system operating at approximately 150 cfm blows a stream of air over the top layer of bags on the pallet. The blower system is composed of two 3-in air jets (approximately 1,200-ftjmin velocity) directed toward an exhaust system on the opposite side of the pallet. As these air jets travel across the pallet, they entrain the dust generated during bag stacking. The exhaust ventilation system pulls approximately 2,500 cfm of air and dust through the exhaust hood. This exhaust air can then be dumped into a baghouse ventilation system, or filtered before being discharged outside the mill. During a laboratory evaluation, a 70-pct dust reduction was recorded for the bag stacker. The system was then evaluated in an actual working environment. The first field evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation in which one worker performed the entire loading and bag stacking process. This worker's dust exposure was lowered 76 pet when using the new pallet loading system. The second field evaluation showed only moderate dust reduction, but this was mainly attributed to an overriding problem associated with background dust and the cleanliness of the bags. From both the ergonomic and production standpoint, the system was well received by both the workforce and plant management.

The consumption of gasoline in the United States varies materially with the seasons; during some of the summer months it exceeds the rate of production and in the other seasons the production of gasoline exceeds the consumption, The usual practice of the larger refiners is to store surplus stocks during the winter season in order to meet the heavy demands during the summer months. The Cebolla Creek titaniferous iron deposits near Powderhorn in southern Gunnison County, Colo., were examined by the Federal Bureau of Mines as part of an overall program to investigate the Nation's titanium and iron resources. The deposits occur around the periphery of the Iron Hill stock, which underlies an area of about 12 square miles. Concentrations of magnetite, ilmenite, and perovskite arc localized along fractures in the pyroxenite stock. Mineralogical studies of composite surface samples collected in 1956 showed that most of the iron is present in ilmenite-bearing magnetite. Perovskite is the chief titanium mineral in the magnetite-rich and augite-rich types, and sphene is the principal titanium mineral in the placer material. The mica-rich rock contains approximately equal amounts of perovskite, ilmenite, and sphene.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the extraction of alumina from calcined kaolin by leaching with boiling RCI in a train of three 50-gal continuous, stirred reactors. Slurry discharged from the reactors con-tained an excessive amount of fines, which impeded solid-liquid separation. Autogenous grinding of coarse solids that accumulated in the reactors was the source of the fines. This report describes modifications to the reactors and to the operations that led to decreased fines generation and improved solid-liquid separation. Modifications to the reactors included custom-made impellers, the addition of a baffle system, a subsurface slurry discharge system, and slower rotation of the impellers. Concurrent testing of a continuous horizontal belt filter showed that the form filtration rates were increased from 350 to almost 1,000 Ib/h+ ft-2 when the modified reactors were used.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to describe the sealing off of a mine fire and subsequent use of carbon dioxide gas to extinguish it.A fire of electrical origin occurred in the Valier mine of the Valier Coal Co., Valier, Franklin County, I11., on March 29, 1949, at about 1:35 p.m. It was discovered about 3:35 p.m. in 5 south west intake airway inby 1 and 2 west panels. The No. 5 southwest airway had caved, and the fire was in the top coal beneath a large fall of rock. All men, except officials, were ordered from the mine. The mine officials decided to seal the fire, and four temporary seals were erected, which isolated approximately 200 feet of 5 south west entry. The seals were completed on March 30 at 2:45 a.m., but on March 31, at 3;40 a.m,, two of them were blown out by an explosion of gas that was produced by the fire. The two seals were rebuilt, the work being completed on March 31 at 12:00 noon, but they were blown out by another gas explosion at 12:10 a.m. on April 1. It was then decided to extinguish the fire with water if possible.To accomplish this, concrete-block dams were constructed. On April 1, about 4:25 a.m., when the dams were about half completed, water was introduced into the fire area through a 2-inch pipe.On April 4, J. G, Crawford, general manager of the Valier Coal Co., notified James Westfield, chief of the Vincennes (Ind.) Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines, by telephone of the fire in Valier mine and requested assistance to combat it. Westfield, accompanied by F. J. Smith and H. C. Brumbaugh, Federal coal-mine inspectors, went underground and inspected the seals and dams. Later, during a conference with company officials, it was decided that the concrete-block dams were not strong enough to withstand the hydrostatic pressure that would be produced by flooding the fire area. It was then decided to use carbon dioxide gas to extinguish the fire. Four seals were completed, and 5 tons of carbon dioxide gas was introduced into the fire area, which extinguished the fire."

Conversion of euxenite concentrate to sulfates with sulfuric acid and solvent extraction of the yttrium- rare - earth mixture with EHPA were studied to determine extraction and separation characteristics . Digestion with 3.5 pounds of 96 percent sulfuric acid per pound of concentrate at 336 ° C for 4 hours resulted in an easily handled product with a yield in excess of 98 per- A thorium- free product was obtained by calcining the sulfated material for 3.5 hours at 650 ° C prior to leaching with water . Di ( 2 - ethylhexyl ) phosphoric acid solvent is an effective extractant with preference for cerium ( IV ) and heavy - group rare - earth elements including yttrium . Separation of complex rare - earth mixtures into light- and heavy - group fractions is feasible , and these fractions can be further processed to isolate ytterbium , neodymium , and dysprosium by changing processing conditions to obtain separation factors greater than two between these and adjacent elements .

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon on the tensile properties of electrorefined vanadium in terms of the Petch equation. The effects of the different impurities and grain sizes on the yield and flow stress between 2730 and 770 K were studied. For specimens of like composition, the values of the Petch parameters 01 and ky obtained by two different methods, extrapolation and grain size, were nearly the same. For high-purity electrorefined vanadium, the 01 value at 2730 K was 10,300 psi (5,150 psi shear). The 01 values for this metal at 1950 and 2730 K were lower by factors of 3 to 4 than for three less pure samples of commercial vanadium metal of equivalent grain size. Nitrogen was more effective than oxygen in increasing 01' the increase being about twice as much for the same impurity level. Carbon produced a slight increase in 01 up to 0.024 percent and then a gradual decrease in 01 to 0.11 percent, the maximum carbon content studied. The corresponding ky values followed the same trend in regard to oxygen and nitrogen additions, whereas the addition of carbon produced no variations at either temperature. Dislocations in vanadium are anchored by carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen with increasing firmness in that order. The high purity of electrorefined vanadium was confirmed by low yield stress and high ductility throughout the low temperature range. The metal also exhibited profuse twinning with high ductility at 1230 and 770 K. The effective surface energy for fracture, y, was found to lie between 3.3 and 3.6 x 1()4 erg cm-2?

The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a hydrametallurgical method to recover aluminum, aluminum oxide, and fluxing salts from aluminum salt slags. The slag is leached with water at room temperature to produce a saturated brine slurry. Screening of the slurry yields an aluminum-rich fraction that can be returned to the dross furnace. The remaining slurry is vacuum filtered, yielding a clear brine solution and an aluminum oxide filter cake. Evaporation of the clear filtrate produces a high-purity fluxing salt for reuse in the dross furnace. Over 80 pct of the metallic aluminum is recovered in the aluminum-rich oversize fraction, while essentially all the fluxing salts are recovered by evaporation. This report contains the final results of an investigation on a process research unit scale, an economic evaluation of the method, and recommendations to further improve the process.

"This paper presents an analysis of fracture mechanisms in coal subjected to bi-axial state of stresses, indentation of laterally confined coal specimen. Coal specimens were loaded to failure by the straight wedge indenters at various lateral confinement pressures. Strain distribution and acoustic emission characteristics of coal specimens under stress were recorded. The influence lines of vertical forces acting on the horizontal straight boundary of the coal specimen for each type of wedge indenter have been established using holographic interferometry technique. The effects of wedge indenter angle, confinement pressure, and coal anisotropy on fracture types, failure modes, and post-failure conditions were studied. The results indicated that combined application of holographic interferometry and acoustic emission monitoring techniques is not only suitable ·for studying deformability of heterogeneous and microscopically discontinuous material under stress but it also enhances the mode of fracture during the post failure stage. INTRODUCTIONOne of the relevant processes in the coal cutting technology is the application of indentation theories. Since most cutting tools in the coal industry are wedge shaped most of the indentation research is found for a wedge shaped tool.A wide range of behavior is found in different rocks subjected to the wedge penetration. A rock which is elastic brittle at standard pressure might become elastic plastic at high confining pressure (Gnirk and Cheatham, 1963). It was also observed that some rocks will merely be crushed and indented by a wedge whereas others will crack and form chips, furthermore the existence or non-existence of chips depends mostly on the geometry of the indenter, type of rock and the depth of penetration (Evans and Murrel, 1958). However, coal cutting technology is mostly explained by models which use rigid wedge to penetrate into a brittle material in which both crushing and chipping will occur (Evans and Murrel, 1958, 1962)."

The term "fusain" was first adopted from the French by the American geologist J. J. Stevenson in 1911, according to Wheeler, (1),3 who applies it to that portion of coal resembling charcoal, which he treats as one of the four ingredients of banded bituminous coal. The term has since been adopted by American writers. The Germans use it with slightly different spelling - namely, fusit. It is the equivalent of "mother-of-coal" and "mineral charcoal" of the earlier British writers. The English word fusain is also applied to "a crayon of fine charcoal" and is derived from the Latin root fusus. OCCURRENCE OF FUSAIN IN COAL AND ITS RECOGNITION Fusain is fairly widely distributed in coals of all ranks in varying amounts. It is almost always present in very thin sheets between the bedding planes of the banded coal constituents and presents a jet-black silky appearance who n the coal is split away. As fusain has little cohesive power the coal splits readily along the planes where it occurs. Such fusain bands often attain appreciable thickness -- frequently 1/4 to 3/4 inch. -Beet (2) has reported a maximum thickness of 2 inches for fusain partings, and Sinnatt (3) has found it in the form of plates and lumps; one lump taken by him from the Peacock mine weighed 3-3/4 pounds. Bore (4) has found it in coal balls. Sinnatt (3) states that fusain occurs in two forms, "the first a hard compact variety occurring rather rarely, which can not be pulverized by pressure of the fingers the second type is the common substance" -- that is, a very friable, easily pulverized material. The writer has also found the two types of fusain in the same coal bed and has observed that the hard variety contained considerable calcium carbonate, which probably entered the material in situ by infiltration. Sinnatt further remarks that the layers of fusain (soft type) usually contain less moisture than the coal (or lose it more readily on exposure), and when exposed they quickly change to flocculent powder so that the fines of the coal as mined are likely to contain a major proportion of this substance.

The reaction between calcined dolomite and ferrosilicon has been studies with the aim of developing a continuous process for magnesium production. Small-scale tests were made in vacuum retorts similar to those used in the vacuum retort process as developed by Pidgeon (1)2/ and operated during the period of World War II in several Government-owned plants. Factors investigated with respect to the silicon efficiency were the reaction temperature, reaction time, amount of excess dolomite in the charge, and effect of adding sodium silicate to the charge to serve as a binder. Additional laboratory tests were made to study the reaction at elevated temperature but at atmospheric pressure. Silicon efficiencies exceeding 80 percent were found to result when operating in the temperature range from 1,750° to 1,800° C. for periods of 20 to 30 minutes.

In this comprehensive study of the use of wood products in coal mining, a sample of over 220 mines provided data by questionnaire. Wood use per ton of underground coal was found to vary substantially by mining process and region. In the Eastern Coal region, 1.6 board feet of wood was used per ton of coal, wel above the 0.6 board feet usage per ton in the West. The kind of timber used varied also by Region. Hardwood use is about 40 times greater than softwood in the Eastern Region. There, hardwoods are plentiful, relatively cheap and strong. In the West where softwood forests predominate, softwoods were 2-1/2 times more common in mine wood use than hardwoods. Nearly 80 percent of the wood used in underground coal mines is used in cross bars and props. Nearly 54 million cubic feet of wood products were used in coal mining in the sample year 1979; about twice as much going to underground mines as surface mines. Wood requirements for mining were projected to 2030 for a range of three oil price scenarios. Much greater wood use will be required for greater coal output.

This report presents the concept, design, and testing of a sonic velocity monitoring system for the early detection of slope failure in open pit mines. The heart of the system is a device for producing reproducible sonic signals in rock. Because changes in the velocity of sound through rock near the top of the pit wall are a measure of extent and rate of fracturing of the rock, velocity histories obtained from periodic, automatic sonic velocity surveys provide positive information about developing slope instability.

From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from' this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1939,459 / producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356 acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smakover field, which rose td an average of 444,9507 barrel daily during that year. Industry must be made to realize that "Safety First" means just that - safety first. The miner must realize that safety first takes precedence over earnings. The employer must realize that safety is the first consideration, and is not to be subordinated to profit-making. Neither employee nor employer is justified in adopting the principle of safety first with reservations; that is they will practice safety first only so long as they think that it does not interfere with earnings or profits. This paper proposes to demonstrate that suberdinating safety to possible profit is short-sighted and that over an ex- tended period of time it dres not result in increased profits or earnings. An employee through disregard of safe practice may receive an injury that will cause him a loss of earnings if, indeed, he is net killed or permanently in- capacitated. If permanently incapacitated any compensation he may receive is very likely to be wholly inadequate as compared with probable earnings if the accident had not cccurred. The employer, upon his part, will find that the burden of compensating his injured employse will far exceed the outlay of money necessary to maintain a reasonable program of safety in his mine or plant. The mine foreman is one of the most important factors in the matter of mine safety. A vigilant and competent mine foreman, once he has established the confidence of the employees in his ability as a foreman, can be of invalu- able assistance in promoting mine safety, for through him and his assistants the employees may be made to cooperate. Every employer should remember, then, that the soluction of the foremen and their assistants is one of the most important matters connected with the work of establishing the maximum amount of safety in his mine. Everyone connected with the mining industry must be made to realize that there is to be no back-sliding and no let-up in safety work; that no matter how dry and tedious the routine may seem it is absolutely essential and justi- fied for both humanitarian and economical reasons. Efficient safety effort pays dividends in actual cash to both employer and employee. About 50 per cent of underground accidents in coal mines take place at the working face where the miners dig and load the coal. Approximately 17 per cent of coal-mine fatal accidents are the result of underground haulage. "INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, recognizing the importance of knowing the evapor¬ation losses of aviation gasoline as larger quantities of this material must be stored, has made studies at a large refinery in the Texas Panhandle area during the past 13 months to determine the magnitude of the losses, by evaporation, under different storage conditions. Proper storage of aviation gasoline is very important, not only because large supplies are being stored for military use but because the specifications to which his fuel must conform are very rigid. Aviation gasolines that conform present-day specifications are blended from base-gasoline stocks (in some instances relatively pure hydrocarbons), each of which has different physical and chemical characteristics. Consequently, partial loss of any one of the more volatile components from the blended fuel results not only in material loss of the blended fuel but also may affect the characteristics or performance of the gasoline. One characteristic that has considerable influence or the vaporization tendency of gasoline is vapor pressure; and although the vapor pressure of aviation gasoline usually is lower than that of average commercial motor fuel, the quantity of certain components having relatively higher vapor pressure is greater in aviation gasoline, so that under prolonged storage the evaporation loss of these components may be appreciable."
