Briefly, this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross-sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index. Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization, it gave indications of having value in measuring free-swelling and coking properties of coals when burned on fuel tests. An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineering company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal. Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling excessively and clogging the grate. Samples were obtained, and it was found that the troublesome coals gave radically higher free-swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily. Also, it was found that the free-swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the standard volatile-matter test or iron agglutination-value results. The results of the free-swelling test were confirmed by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling, Coal, a special group of the Subcommittee, under the chairmanship of R.A. Shuman, worked along with the test method. Estberg, Limacher, and Shuman of the Battelle Memorial Institute investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential-type stokers from the swelling characteristics of the coal. Data were presented that also showed that the index was helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers.

Methylene chloride , dichloromethane CH2C12 , a low - boiling and highly volatile organic chlorinated compound, is used extensively as a refrigerant in air conditioning installations , as an intermediate in organic synthesis , and as a solvent for cellulose acetate and other materials . As its vapors are not inflammable in air at ordinary temperatures , it can be used to advantage where it would be highly dangerous to use ordinarily inflammable solvents . The question has been raised as to its inflammable range in pure oxygen and in air enriched with oxygen . To find the answer to this question, tests were carried out with various mixtures of methylene chloride , oxygen, and nitrogen mixtures . It was found that methylene chloride has wide limits of inflammability in pure oxygen . Additional tests were then made to establish the complete range of inflammability of these gases . The methylene chloride employed in the tests was cbtained from the Eastman Kodak Co. It had a reported boiling range of 40.5 ° to 42.0 ° C. and a density of 1.322 at 20 ° C.

The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve planning and development in coal mining, is investigating strata interactions associated with mining of multiple coalbeds. Two common interactions that occur between adjacent coalbeds are subsidence and pillar load transfer. The study described involves underground observations and measurements conducted at two Pennsylvania mines, each affected by one of these interactions. At the mine affected by subsidence, measurements show that undermining had little effect on upper mine pillar stability, but had a more severe effect on the development and maintenance of entries. Roof-to-floor measurements recorded over four times more convergence in entries developed over gob as compared with entries developed over support pillars in the lower mine. At the mine affected by pillar load transfer, Initial in situ measurements have shown the existence of a pressure arch in the lower workings. Prior research has shown that arch interaction between two adjacent openings can create stress concentrations in the in-nerburden. Underground measurements and results obtained from both mine sites correlate with theoretical and photoelastic multiple-seam models, and eventually these field data will serve to refine model accuracy. Further study of multiple-seam interaction mechanisms will lead to improved mine planning, increased resource conservation, and a safer working environment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) donning proficiency of 243 miners. These workers were from eight underground coal mines in the eastern United States. The objectives of the study were (1) to gather information on skill levels, since all miners in the study had prior instruction and opportunity to practice donning the apparatus, and (2) to summarize a quality control procedure useful in conducting periodic evaluations of donning proficiency. The sampling procedure used proved to be both reasonable and efficient in gathering information on training effectiveness_ It also provided a good statistical base for making informed site-specific decisions regarding SCSR training needs. Results from the observed samples at each of the eight mines indicate a wide variability across sites. The rate at which miners failed to isolate their lungs varied from 33 to 40.0 pct. Concomitantly, proficiency rates (miners either performing adequately or demonstrating a perfect 3+3 sequence) ranged from 13.3 to 63.3 pct.

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenum deposits occur in Halifax County, N. C., near the eastern border of the Piedmont province. The deposits are associated with a small granite body about 2 miles long and half a mile wide. Molybdenite is the principal ore mineral and is found as disseminations or thin stringers in quartz veins and occasionally in the enclosing granite or schist wall rock.The deposits were investigated by Almon F. Robertson and Charles J. Cohen, engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in 1942 and 1943, who recommended that the deposits be explored to supplement reserves of critical war minerals.The Bureau made the initial exploration of the deposits in July 1943 and continued its work to January 1944. Drilling was resumed from July to December 1946 to test the deposits at &eater depth than had been attempted during the previous exploration."

The anchorage capacity of four types of bolting systems was investigated in two mines with thick coal roofs. In conjunction with the in-mine tests, a simple axisymmetric finite element computer program was developed. Both the field and computer results indicated that thick coal roofs can be effectively supported entirely by the coal member.

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. [In 1922 a conference of representative coal-mine operators, cable manufacturers, mining-machine manufacturers, and representatives of the United States Bur eau of Mines vas held at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, regarding suitable cables for use with permissible raining machines. This conference recommended that the Bureau investigate rubber-sheathed trailing cables in order to obtain specifications for tests leading to approval for rise with mining machines. Effective until such time as an investigation could be made, the bureau asked the several manufacturers of approved mining machines to recommend cables for wise with their machines. In general the Cables recommended tentatively approved. Arrangements for the tests were completed in 1927. Concentric-type cables were investigated first, and Reports of Investigations, Serial No. 2909, covering the tests, was issued in January, 1929.]

Scale inhibitors and slow-release polymers were tested by the Bureau of Mines at mine drainage treatment facilities. The scale inhibitors were investigated to determine their effectiveness in controlling gypsum (CaSO4) scale; the polymers were investigated to determine their effectiveness for increasing settling rates of suspended iron hydroxide. Two types of scale inhibitors were tested at a site having a severe CaSO4 scaling problem. Both proved to be effective in controlling scale formation; in addition, one caused the dissolution of CaSO4 deposits. Slow-release polymers were tested at three mine drainage treatment facilities. These gelatinous polymeric flocculants were found to be convenient and easy to use, but only effective when pH could be controlled.

Control of the dust produced by continuous mining machines in coal mines is conventionally attained by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine behind the cutting head. In the tests conducted under this contract a so-called "wet-head" machine was used, where the spray nozzles were mounted on the rotating head itself, close to the coal-cutting bits. The tests were conducted at the Robena Mine of U.S. Steel Corporation, using Lee-Norse machines. Operating the wet-head machine and a conventional spray machine in turns in the same section, it was found that the wet-head produced approximately 25 percent less respirable dust and 60 percent less total airborne dust than the conventional spray machine. The wet-head also greatly improved the visibility of the cutting bits from the machine operator's position. Several difficulties had to be overcome before any meaningful tests could be conducted, including excessive pressure drops in the piping system and plugging of the nozzles from internal water contamination. The major obstacle, however, was the rotating water seals on the wet-head, which leaked excessively after only a few hours of operation. Only after several changes and plant and laboratory tests was a design found which permitted conducting the underground tests without appreciable water leakage.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to develop and test for laboratory use a retort embodying many features required for practical commercial-scale applications of vacuum distillation of metals. A gas-fired vacuum retort was developed comprising a hollow, cylindrical graphite liner encased in a thin shell of stainless steel. The liner prevents the shell from collapsing under vacuum and protects it from corrosion by metal vapors and the molten metal charge. The vacuum-tight shell protects the liner from oxidation and flame erosion. The retort was used to distill zinc from dross and die-casting scrap. More than 99 percent of the zinc was recovered as a condensate containing 99.8 to 99.9 percent zinc. (Atmospheric distillation recovers 95 to 98 percent at a purity of 99.5 percent zinc.) Distillation rates of 50 pounds of zinc per hour were attained at a temperature of 65° C. with pressures ranging between 50 and 100 microns. Distillation at this low temperature is not practicable at atmospheric pressure. Also, the retort is suitable for distilling other volatile metals such as cadmium and magnesium.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained from limited diamond drilling at the lead-zinc deposits cf the Belle Eldridge Gold Mines, Inc., in Lawrence County, S. Dak. during the summer and fall of 1943. The work was undertaken in an effort to increase reserves and step-up production of zinc and lead so vitally important to the war program.The geology, topography and existing mine workings were mapped and studied. Subsequently, six vertical core-drill holes were put down from surface sites.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The direct dissolution of a typical zinc sulfide flotation concentrate by elevated temperature and pressure leaching was investigated. The concentrate assayed about 55 percent Zn, 32 percent S, 6 percent Fe, and 1 percent Pb and contained minor quantities of copper and precious metals. The influence of various factors on the dissolution of the zinc in acidic and ammoniacal pulps when using oxygen as the oxidant was determined. The tests revealed that the sphalerite was difficult to oxidize. Complete dissolution of the mineral required vigorous and intimate nixing of the gaseous, liquid, and sold phases. The addition of pyrite or sulfuric acid to water slurries of the concentrate was required to obtain a high zinc extraction when leaching under acidic conditions. The quantity of pyrite and acid used was about 0.125 and 0.25 pound, respectively, per pound of zinc sulfide contained in the leach charge. In tests with acid, about 96 percent of the zinc was extracted from the concentrate in 1 hour at 200° C. when the oxygen partial pressure was 75 pounds per square inch gage or higher. Leaching with a continuous flow of air as the oxidant gave results that were almost as good as those obtained when oxygen was used, In tests with air fed through the autoclave at 320 liters per hour, 95 percent of the zinc was dissolved in 1 hour, Acid leach solutions assaying approximately 58 grams Zn per liter and containing Fe, Ni, Cr, and Cu impurities were produced in the better tests. The leached residue consisted essentially of red iron oxide together with substantially all of the lead and precious metals.

In order to help assure an adequate domestic supply of minerals essential to the Nation's economy and and security by developing more efficient minerals extraction technologies, the Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Research Center examined the application of autogenous microgrinding to calcium carbonate minerals. Treatment of minus 8-mesh Alabama marble resulted in a product 80 pct minus 5 micrometers (µm) at a power consumption of 70 to 80 kwhr/ton, This study shows that coarse particles of calcium carbonate minerals are effective as the grinding media for the autogenous attrition grinding of these minerals. The minus 8- plus 30-mesh fraction is an effective grinding medium (sand) for particles smaller than 30 mesh. A 40-pct-solids slurry and a sand: marble ratio of 2.5 appeared to be near optimum. For residence times above 13 minutes, products were greater than 80 pet minus 5 µm and greater than 54 pct minus 2 µm. Power consumption was uniformly low, ranging from 50 to 100 kwhr/ton of product depending upon the feed rate. One marble sample from Georgia was shown to be the most persistent grinding medium, with losses of less than half those of the other materials tested.

The autoignition temperatures (A.I.T.'s) of natural and synthetic lubricants in air were generally found to decrease with increasing pressure. Of the two types of fluids, synthetic and natural, studied in some detail, the phosphate esters had higher A.I.T.'s at any pressure between 1 and 200 atmospheres than the mineral oils. Most of the A.I.T. data obtained in this study obeyed the relationship predicted by Semenov's theory of ignition.
