The Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop preliminary engineering data necessary if the cobalt-rich manganese crusts that occur in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Hawaiian Archipelago are to be mined. The research was divided into the following sections: (1) physical, mineralogical, and chemical descriptions; (2) mechanical property testing, such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and a rippability index; and (3) mechanical cutting characteristics, including average and peak cutter forces, the specific energy, and cuttings size distribution. Section 1 utilized microscope, X-ray powder diffractometer, and electron microprobe analyses. Section 2 utilized standard mechanical property testing techniques. Section 3 utilized a converted planer mill with full-size coal cutters to fragment the crust and substrate samples. The manganese crust samples were mainly manganese and iron oxides and hydroxides with an average cobalt content of 1 pct and had a nucleus or substrate of rock or sediment. The significant results shown by the mechanical property and cutting tests are that the crust and all but two types of substrates (basalt and trachyte) are weak materials and easily cut with standard drag cutters. The crusts are generally comparable to medium hard coal in strength and in their resistance to cutting.

"The problem of signaling to the hoisting engineer from a moving cage in the shaft has been considered by many mine operators for a number of years. There are several methods in use in different mining districts, and so far as the writer is aware they have been further developed in Utah than in any other state. The latest installations are of interest because they use a very low-voltage circuit for the shaft wires and also because the wiring can be so arranged that the hoist can be stopped from the cage, if so desired.The first installation in Utah was in the shaft of the Centennial-Eureka mine under the management of C. E. Allen. It was placed in operation in the summer of 1899, end has been in continuous and satisfactory operation for 21 years. The arrangement consists or two bare wires down the shaft carrying a current at 60 volts potential, with a device on the cage for making connection between the two wires. This device is simply a short piece of wire which is thoroughly insulated from the cage and is operated by a short lever. Whenever the cage rider wishes to signal the engineer he pulls down the lever, forcing the short wire out against the two bare wires, thus making a circuit which rings the bell in the hoist-room. A similar device was planned in the Grand Central shaft at Mammoth, Utah, but was later abandoned. The cause of failure was reported to be that the shaft was very wet."

The use of extended workdays or compressed workweeks (regular shift lengths exceeding 8 h) is attracting growing interest in many industries using continuous operations. While extended workdays promise increased worker satisfaction due to more days off, including weekends and holidays, there are legitimate concerns about the potential effects on the health and safety of such a schedule. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a study at a Canadian underground copper, lead, and zinc mining operation that was designed to study the safety and performance implications of extended workdays. Measures were taken before and after a change from the old 8-h continuous schedule to the new 12-h continuous schedule, including behavioral performance measures to analyze perceptual-motor changes, continuous heart-rate monitoring and aerobic capacity to measure physical fatigue, a variety of self-report questionnaires to measure perceived adaption and satisfaction with the new schedule, and pulmonary-respiratory measures to examine air contaminant exposure. Based upon the overall acceptance of the new schedule by the workers and lack of change in fatigue-sensitive behavioral and physiological performance measures, this study recommends that the mine retain the 12-h schedule. However, certain precautionary measures are suggested to insure the safety of the workers.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several methods for extracting tantalum and columbium (niobium) and the rare-earth compounds from ores and concentrates. A cooperative agreement was made by the Bureau with Porter Bros. Corporation of Idaho to process 200 pounds of its euxenite concentrate by methods that had been developed at the Albany, Oreg., Metallurgy Research Center. The euxenite concentrate was processed to extract and purify the valuable metals by chlorination, solvent extraction, and hydrometallurgical techniques. Chlorination was used to convert the valuable constituents into chlorides and to partly separate them. Solvent extraction techniques were used to separate the tantalum from the columbium. The rare-earth and uranium compounds were purified by hydrometallurgical methods.

This report describes results of tests on the desilication of solutions resulting from the leaching of lime-soda sinters. Desilication was accomplished by heating the solutions in an autoclave. A liquor relatively free of silica was obtained after 30 minutes of heating at 200 p.s.i.g. in the presence of lime. The addition of lime improved desilication, but the rate and efficiency of desilication was effected by the quality of lime used. The optimum quantity of lime for effective desilication was about 6 grams per liter. A lesser quantity gave poorer desilication, and a greater quantity increased the alumina loss without improving desilication. The alumina loss was approximately proportional to the lime added. A complex structure, called artificial noselite in this report, was the only silica bearing compound detected in the desilication precipitate. Other compounds present were Ca(OH)2 (calcium hydroxide), CaCO3 (calcium carbonate), and Ca [A1(OH)6]2 (hydrated tricalcium aluminate). Sodium carbonate in the leach liquor retarded the formation of the calcium aluminate; hence it decreased the alumina lost to the precipitate. The extraction of alumina from aluminum silicate materials by the limestone soda-sinter process has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines for many years. The process consists of the following major operations: Blending the aluminum silicate with limestone and soda ash in such proportions that dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate are formed on sintering; leaching the sinter in a carbonated caustic solution to extract the soluble alumina; purifying the leach liquor by the precipitation of soluble silica (this precipitate is designated desilication precipitate in this paper); precipitating alumina trihydrate from the purified liquors by carbonating with carbon dioxide gas; and calcining the trihydrate to alumina. The jig men of the Tri-State (Joplin-Miami) zinc district complain about the flakiness of their mill feed. They believe that the flakiness of the composite grains of gangue and mineral are to blame for losses of zinc; that is, that the flaky grains in the jig tailings have higher zinc tenor than the cubical grains. Although the evidence which follows contradicts this belief, no effort is made to give a final and conclusive answer. On the other hand, there is outlined a positive and mechanical method which the operator may use to pursue this and similar investigations. DISCUSSION OF SCREENING METHOD Hand-sorting is obviously not satisfactory for separating cubical grains from flaky grains because the personal influence can not be removed. Screens, however, may be used with success. A set of each of two types of screens is required; namely, the square-hole type and the rectangular (rectang, oblong) type. The square-hole screens must be of the double Tyler scale; that is, the order of the sieves should be after the fourth root of two instead of the customary square root of two; close sizing is important. The size of the rectang screens may be selected by trials so that a part of the material already closely sized on the square-hole screens, will pass the oblong holes. Obviously, the cubical grains will remain on the rectang and the flaky grains will pass through. Hence the mode of operation is to screen first on square-hole screens and then split the products on the oblong-hole screens.

The Bureau of Mines has completed 4 yr of deep-bed filtration research comparing the efficiencies of granular magnesium oxide (MgO) and conventional filter sand in single- and dual-medium filters when filtering mineral-processing and mine waters. Bench and field evaluation tests were conducted using water types ranging from synthetic suspensions of asbestos, kaolin, metal hydroxides, and milled sand to process waters from magnetite beneficiation, iron ore flotation, granite cutting, and a steel mill. Even though the turbidity reductions were similiar, MgO filters were found to be advantageous when filtering water pretreated with alum because the volume throughput before breakthrough (turbidity > 1 NTU unit) was much more for the MgO filter than for the sand filter. Reduced head loss owing to the greater porosity of the MgO filter beds is potentially the most beneficial advantage in employing MgO as the filter medium, especially when filtering water pretreated with polymer flocculants. Granular MgO (periclase) is durable and can be backwashed Like sand. It is compatible with anthracite in a dual-medium filter and apparently is not poisoned by dissolved metals in the process water. No single solid-removal mechanism could be identified for the improved filtration observed with granular MgO.

The heats of combustion of three chromium carbides, Cr23C6, Cr7C3, and Cr3C2, were determined by combustion calorimetry. Heats of formation calculated from the results follow: ?Hf°298 (Cr23C6) = -94.7 ± 5.0 kcal/mole, ?Hf°298 (Cr7C3) = -43.3 ± 1.7 kcal/mole, and ?Hf°298 (Cr3C2) = -22.5 ± 0.8 kcal/mole.

In another paper the writer has described an investigation in which the forms of sulphur in coke were determined and described. Coke was found to contain four characteristic forms of sulphur- namely, ferrous sulphide, sulphates, ad- sorbed free sulphur, and sulphur held in solid solution in the carbon. While the coke is still in the oven, only two forms of sulphur are present namely, the ferrous sulphide and the sulphur in solid solution in the carbon. During the quenching, however, the sulphur of the coke is subjected to considerable oxidation, a portion of the ferrous sulphide being oxidized to free sulphur and sulphates, while the solid solution form remains unchanged. The coke, however, loses no sulphur during this process, since the free sulphur which is formed ie retained by the coke in an adsorbed form. Since this oxidation of the ferrous sulphide took place so easily, an inves- tigation was undertaken to determine whether this property could not be taken ad- vantage of in some industrial process for the desulphurization of coke. Although it is true that such a roasting process would not touch the solid-solution form of sul- phur, still the removal of the ferrous sulphide sulphur would undoubtedly benefit the coke from the standpoint of the metallurgist. This improvement in the coke would result not only from the decrease in total sulphur, but also from the large decrease in the ferrous sulphide, which is responsible for the contamination of the iron in the upper part of the blast-furnace. The de sulphurization of coke by roasting in air it a new idea, but dates back to the earliest days of coke manufacture. In 1871, Philipparts published the results of some work done by him on the de sulphurization of coke by air, as well as a review of the results of earlier investigators. In the se earlier experiments, nothing was known of the forms in which the sulphur existed in the coke, while the temperature measurements were only approximate, so that altogether the results were not very conclusive nor complete. The de sulphurisation figures given by the se early investigators generally showed a low efficiency for the process, but some extraordinary results were claimed by certain inventors. In the light of our new knowledge concerning the coke sulphur, it seemed to be important enough to warrant investigation.

This report, which covers the period from June 15, 1974 to May 30, 1975, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of Contract No. H0242065 and modifications 1, 2, and 3 thereto. The purpose of the original contract was to equip the second shuttle car in the Jewell Ridge No. 12 mine, section 6R, with a refined design canopy and seats. In addition, several refinements and improvements were to be designed and installed at the same location on the cutter and the loader. However, during October 1974 in response to a request from the Technical Project Officer, the contract was modified to eliminate all of the cutter and loader tasks and substitute the design, fabrication, and installation of an improved canopy on the no. 2 roof drill in the above mentioned section of the Jewell Ridge No. 12 mine.

Two exploratory gasification tests of limited duration were made at Dorsten, Germany, with strongly coking Pittsburgh-bed coal in a fixed-bed pressure gasifier. To reduce the coking potential of the Arkwright coal, ash refuse from the gasification of Dorsten (Leopold) coal was added to pre-pare coal-ash mixtures which contained nominal 20 and 30 percent ash. Major adjustments in principal process variables at the beginning of the tests resulted in wide fluctuations in the rate of gas production, gas offtake temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration in the gas. Because a higher steam-to-oxygen ratio was used in the tests than was customarily employed for routine operation, gas production was lower, and steam and oxygen consumption was higher. After operating conditions had been improved, the results of a 12~-hour-long test with addition of sufficient ash refuse to obtain a nominal 30 percent ash concentration indicated that operation is feasible with this coal mixture using a fixed-bed pressure gasifier equipped with a rotating coal distributor and stirrer.

As a part of the strategic mineral exploration program, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples of ore from four manganese properties in Yavapai, Yuma, Maricopa, and Mohave Counties, Ariz. As all of the ores were too low in grade to be acceptable by manufacturers of ferromanganese beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration.

Standard smoldering and flaming combustion tests using smaIl coal samples have been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a method to evaluate the response of a smoke detector. The tests are con-ducted using a standard smoke box designed and constructed according to Underwriters Laboratories. The tests provide a standard, easily reproducible smoke characteristic for smoldering and flaming coal combustion, based upon a comparison of the smoke optical density and the response of a standard ionization chamber to the smoke. With these standard tests, the range of threshold limits for the response of a smoke detector and the detector's reliability can be evaluated for nearly identical smoke visibility and smoke physical characteristics. The detector's threshold response limits and reliability need to be well defined prior to the instrument's use as part of a mine fire warning system for improved mine safety.

Vermiculite deposits on the. Platt ranch, 12 miles southeast of Encampment Carbon County, Wyo., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines early in 1949. Major activity was centered on property held under lease by the Mikolite Mining & Development Co. (figs. 1 and 2). Vermiculite occurs in masses and lenses of varying size and as disseminations in altered hornblende diorite. Alteration of the host rock probably resulted from the proximity of dikes and irregular masses of pegmatite. Investigation of the Mikolite property consisted of surface trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling. Four trenches totaling 5,401 linear feet were excavated with a bulldozer and Diesel power shovel. Three diamond-drill holes totaling 600 feet were drilled from the surface to determine the character of mineralization at depth. Eighty-one bulk samples were obtained from the trenches, and 130 sludge samples were collected from the drill holes. Samples were analyzed, and ore-dressing tests were made in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Salt Lake City.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a HCI-02 leaching procedure to recover Cu, Ni, and Co from a low-grade bulk sulfide flotation concentrate prepared from the Duluth gabbro complex. Since the Duluth gabbro complex is the largest known and unexploited Ni resource in the United States, the development of options for extracting the metal values from the flotation concentrate of this domestic resource is necessary. Conditions were determined for producing a pregnant solution low in Fe to facilitate recovery of the metal values. Leaching experiments were conducted at 15 pct solids, 1000 to 1200 C, 0.2 to 0.3 g HCI per gram concentrate in a 50-gal reactor pressurized to 50 pSig with 02. Base metal extractions from the concentrate were, in percent, 90 to 92 Cu, 99 Ni, 97 to 99 Co, and 0.1 .Fe. Precious metals extractions were erratic and unpredictable; at best their extractions were, in percent, 55 Au, 90 Ag, 40 Pt, and 45 Pd. The reaction time at 1200 C was 0.5 h. The use of compressed air instead of 02 as the oxidant was also investigated. Solvent extraction using LIX 622 was used to remove Cu from the pregnant solution. Cementation on Cu was tested for precious metals recovery, while sulfide precipitation was used to produce a Ni-Co product. A conceptual flowsheet for treating the Duluth gabbro concentrate is proposed.

The Bureau of Mines has reviewed the literature related to the recovery of A1203 (alumina) from coal ash. A small amount of unpublished data is also reported. Of the processes studied, the alkaline-sinter process is the most promising from a technical standpoint. However, owing to the high cost of processing coal ash, the dispersed location of powerplants, and the domestic availability of higher grade alternate materials, coal ash does not rank as a primary source material for replacing imported bauxite.

"INTRODUCTION The Powhatan mine of the Franklin Coal Mining Co. is located in the western part of Jefferson County, Ala., on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, 40 miles west of Birmingham. The Mary Lee bed at this point yields coal with fair coking qualities, but with an ash content as mined so high as to prohibit its use in the production of metallurgical coke. At present the entire output of the mine is washed in single-compartment jigs and marketed as locomotive and domestic fuel.Figure 1 gives a typical seam section of the Mary Lee bed at the Powhatan mine. This section shows that the bed is divided by rock partings into three benches. In many parts of the mine, particularly in the older workings the roof rock is so weak that it can not be held without excessive timbering. This condition has restricted the operation in many parts of the mins to the middle and bottom benches of coal. The 6 inches of draw rock between the top and middle benches is very strong and makes an excellent roof requiring only a normal amount of timbering to support it. In the newer workings of the mine the character of the rock above the top bench is strong and it is believed that in the future it will be possible to work all three benches. This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the Mary Lee bed at Powhatan and the effect on these characteris-tics of including or omitting the coal from the top bench. It was also the purpose of the study to show whether it would be possible to produce a washed product sufficiently low in ash to be used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. This paper is one of a series of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and tin University of Alabama. With the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama. It contains the results of screen sizing and float-and-sink tests of representative samples of run-of-mine coal, and the results of table tests on the minus 3/16-inch sizes of the raw coal."

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing quarrying methods and costs at stone quarries throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scrope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of J. R. Thoenen, mining engineer, United States Bureau of Mines, in the preparation of this paper. Acknowledgment is also made to E. R. "This paper outlines some of the work associated with a research study into the relationship between the characteristics of coal mine dust and the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). The project involves study of the chemical, mineralogical, and morphological characteristics of the dust. Early stages of the study have dealt primarily with the size analysis and elemental composition of airborne dust in continuous miner sections. This paper outlines the procedures and findings of the elemental analysis portion of the study.Most of the previous elemental analyses of coal were made available in the quest for information on the combustibility of coal dust or on causal agents and prevalence of CWP. However, no extensive studies have been performed to date, primarily due to the limitations of the analytical methods. A review of the analytical methods for elemental characterization of coal and coal dust particles is presented. TI1e comparisons are made based on the sample mass required, the sample preparation required, the destructivity of the test, and the capability of providing an easy multi-element analysis. The reasons for selecting the proton-induced x-ray emission spectroscopy (PIXE) method are outlined.The PIXE method was applied to both the airborne coal mine dust and channel samples collected from seven continuous miner sections in six different mines. Channel samples of the coal, roof and floor were collected and analyzed. Airborne dust sampling was performed using multi-stage cascade impactors and permissible 2.0 I/min pumps. Sampler locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roof bolter or with respect to the intake and return airways. Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the dust concentration.The statistical analysis of the resulting elemental data is presented. Of particular importance are the analyses of the variation of elemental composition with size and the variation in elemental composition over the working section. One interesting finding is outlined showing the multivariate statistical analysis of the trace elements and its implications in the identification of the dust sources. The paper concludes with an analysis of the ramifications of the elemental data to related medical studies."
