This report describes methods and techniques employed by The Glidden Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, in explorating an ilmenite-bearing sand deposit in Ocean County, New Jersey, during 1960 to determine ore reserve potential and the feasibility of mining and establishing a milling plant on the property for the production of ilmenite concentrate. The property covered approximately 1,250 acres. Comprehensive sampling by water-jet drilling indicated the deposit averaged 20 feet in thickness and contained 4.5 percent heavy minerals, of which 80 to 85 percent was ilmenite and leucoxene. Average depth of the water table as determined by auger boring was 16.8 feet. Pilot plant tests indicated that circular concentrators in combination with spiral concentrators would recover at least 80 percent of the heavy mineral content of the sands. It was estimated that sufficient ore reserve tonnage had been developed to supply the company's Baltimore chemicals division, pigments department, with a suitable grade ilmenite concentrate for a period of 20 years at the present rate of pigments production. The property was designated as Lakehurst mine and plans are in progress for mining development and plant construction.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System collected and analyzed data for 34 nonlaterite and 9 nickeliferous laterite domestic chromite deposits in order to assess their viability as sources of chromium under present technologic and economic conditions. These 43 deposits, none currently in production, contain approximately 6.3 and 22.3 million metric tons of Cr203 at the demonstrated and identified resource levels, respectively. Approximately 4.6 and 15.6 million metric tons of Cr203 are recoverable at the demonstrated and identified levels, respectively, for the 34 nonlaterite deposits. None of these resources are economically recoverable at January 1981 market prices. Production of metallurgical-grade chromite (market price $128 to $144) would require a minimum chromite market price of $237 per metric ton. Chemical-grade chromite production (market price $74 to $85) would require a chromite market price in excess of $188 per metric ton. From the 34 nonlaterite deposits, roughly 5.4 and 17.6 million metric tons of ferrochrome could be produced at the demonstrated and identified resource levels, respectively; however, a minimum market price of $770 per metric ton of ferrochrome would be required to stimulate production. The nine nickeliferous laterite deposits were not evaluated through production stages because of uncertainties in process technology and cost.

In 1955 the Federal Bureau of Mines established a low-temperature tar laboratory at its new Appalachian Experiment Station in Morgantown, W. Va. The objective of the laboratory is to investigate the yields and chemical and physical properties of tars from low-temperature carbonization of coal, to investigate means of economically upgrading these tars, and to make available to industry and the public essential data for increasing coal utilization through the establishment of a new coal-chemical industry, based on the utilization of low-temperature tars. Because of the obvious economic significance of phenols, as well as the relative ease with which they can be separated and analyzed, initial research has centered mainly around this class of tar constituents. It was realized early that no listing of phenols and their physical properties existed that included enough compounds to be practicable. The purpose of this paper is to make such a compilation available.

Significant improvements in surface conditions or mechanical properties of steels have been attributed by several investigators to ladle additions of small quantities of rare-earth metals or their oxides. To investigate systematically these effects in wrought and in cast plain carbon and alloy mechanical steels containing approximately 0.35 percent carbon, heats of four representative compositions were melted by the Bureau of Mines in a 4-ton open-hearth furnace. Each heat was cast into three sets of ingots to exemplify respectively, treatments with (1) rare-earth metals, (2) rare-earth metal oxides, and (3) an untreated set as a control. The development of melting, casting and rolling practices is described and discussed. Lance injection of oxygen shortly after melt raised the temperature of the metal immediately as much as 500° F., principally because mechanical agitation exposed the high-carbon metal to the flame and furnace root. An exceptional degree of superheat in the metal at the termination of the refining period was attributed to oxygen injection during the refining period. Bath temperatures higher than industrial practice were permitted by the all-basic furnace lining. Rates of carbon elimination as high as 0.036 percent carbon per minute were achieved by oxygen injections.

Petrographic and mineralogical studies were made on unoxidized samples from the Cuyuna and Mesabi districts to study occurrence and properties of the iron phyllosilicate minerals . Examination of 96 thin sections from the thinbedded facies of the main iron - formation of the Cuyuna district indicates that the most abundant minerals are Mn - Mg - siderite , stilpnome lane , and minnesotaite . Reconstitution and recrystallization of minerals has occurred along certain beds , and textures indicate that some minnesotaite apparently formed at expense of stilpnomelane . Three samples of stilpnome lane and one of minnesotaite were concentrated from fracture - fillings within iron- formation . Results of chemical , optical , spectrographic , X- ray diffraction , and differential thermal analyses on these samples are reported . The detection of ammonia in stilpnome lane samples is the first such occurrence reported , and its significance is discussed . New mineral data are presented on greenalite and probable septechamosite from the Mesabi district .

The object of this investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines was to evaluate the workability, recrystallization characteristics, and mechanical and physical properties of high-purity electrorefined vanadium. The low level of interstitially soluble elements in electrorefined vanadium results in a soft ductile metal which responds readily to cold working by rolling, swaging, and press-forging. Hardness, strength, and resistivity increased with an increase in impurity content, but thermal expansion was independent of impurity content. The work-hardening of vanadium occurs rapidly. Most of the hardness increase occurs in the first 15 pct. of reduction in area. When vanadium is annealed, its hardness increases to a maximum when the annealing temperature is between 200° to 400° C. A sharp decrease in hardness develops as the annealing temperature is increased. An anomaly in the hardness versus annealing temperature curve is present in the 600° to 800° C. range, while all evidence of cold-work is removed at annealing temperatures above 900° C.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 390 natural gas samples from 22 States and five foreign countries. Of this total, 385 samples were collected during calendar year 1969. The remaining five analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results were not received until 1969. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eleven previous publications have presented the results of 8,660 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1969. The Bureau of Mines measured vapor pressures of selected mixtures in the binary system SnCla-ZnC12 by the static pressure method. Equations expressing the vapor pressure) and the heat and free energy of vaporization) as functions of temperature were developed by numerical analysis based on the sigma-plot method. It was found that the vapor pressure of any SnCl2-ZnCl2 mixture) at any temperature within the range of this investigation) could be accurately calculated from the derived values for the heat and free energy of vaporization for the mixture, with a probable error of 0.01 cm Hg or less.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. A two-dimensional finite element program has been modified and extended to account for some of the rock mechanics complexities associated with single entry development of longwall coal mine panels. Program capability includes arbitrary assignment of element properties without regard to element ordering, anisotropic elastic, plastic and brittle rock properties that may be time dependent (aging), arbitrary mining sequences and provision for the effects of artificial support on the adjacent strata. Failure is according to an extended von Mises criterion that may be linear or quadratic in form; flow rules are obtained from the yield function taken as the plastic potential, but brittle behavior is treated as a discontinuous process of material properties change with deformation. In either case the extent of failure is calculated from the external boundary conditions. Application of the program to essentially two-dimensional problems resulted in lose agreement between calculated displacements and field measurements in the double entry system. Bleeder entries were stable in one locality and not in another. Artificial support had little influence on stability.

This report presents the results of tests conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the transport characteristics of highly concentrated paste backfill mixes made from dewatered total mine tailings. The slurry concentrations of the mixes were all above 78 pct by weight with slumps ranging from 6.4 to 16.5 cm (2.5 to 6.5 in). Laboratory material property tests and full-scale pumping tests were conducted using pipe diameters of 102, 128, and 154 mm (4, 5, and 6 in) and a positive-displacement pump. The results indicated that the tested backfill mixes can be successfully transported as a stiff paste and identified the influence of and the interaction among the various mix and system variables.

Although the Bureau of Mines has thus far made no large-scale experiments with oil shales, and the feasibility of the commercial manufacture of shale-oil products suited to present market requirements has not been demonstrated, there is ample reason to believe that these products will eventually supplement the more commonly used petroleum products and give equally good service. In 1919 the bureau, in cooperation with the Department of Metallurgical Research, University of Utah, began investigating the oil shales of the United States to obtain detailed information on their value. The States of Colorado and Indiana also cooperated through their State universities, in which research laboratories were organized to assist in carrying on the oil-shale studies planned and directed by the bureau. As a result of these studies much information is now available concerning laboratory methods of producing the greatest yields of the best products from oil shale. In order to study the principles that govern the retorting of oil shales and to test the oils produced, it has been necessary to develop and standardize reliable apparatus and methods for distilling shale, and to adapt to the testing of shale oils some of the methods the Bureau of Mines uses for testing petroleum. The methods employed by the Scottish shale-oil manufacturers were also studied, but most of them have been superseded by those described in this bulletin, which give more comprehensive and accurate results and employ more convenient apparatus. This paper is presented, therefore, as a manual of apparatus and methods that the bureau has developed for work on oil shale and found satisfactory for routine tests and for research. Explanation and discussion of the principles underlying the methods of testing are included wherever necessary for a clearer understanding.

Longwall mining in lower seam heights may necessitate the use of single-drum shearers to overcome size constraints associated with standard double-drum shearers. To avoid the operational problem of clearance in the tailgate entry with one single-drum shearer, two single-drum machines can be operated on the same face, with each shearer responsible for mining a predefined portion of the face. However, utilization of two shearers on the same face necessitates the positioning of one shearer operator and a jacksetter in the return air of the upwind shearer, thus complicating respirable dust control on the longwall. In an effort to evaluate the unique dust control problems associated with this type of mining, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted dust surveys on two multiple-machine longwall operations. Sampling was done to quantify major sources of respirable dust and to identify potential solutions to problem areas. Sampling results indicate that the cutting sequences utilized on multiple-machine faces may have to be designed to minimize dust exposure, as opposed to optimizing productivity or facilitating operational requirements. Also, state-of-the-art dust control techniques typically found on double-drum shearer longwalls must be employed to help minimize the exposure of all face personnel to traditional dust sources.

Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (18CNMR) spectra of nine 2-substituted pyridines, seven 3 -substituted pyridines, and nine 4-substituted pyridines have been obtained and analyzed. Substituents included both electron-releasing groups and electron-with hawing groups. Substituent effects on the magnetic shieldings of the ring carbons, except for those in the 2-positions of 2-substituted pyridines, were found to be quite similar to the effects reported for the monosubstituted benzenes, Thus, at least to a first approximation, the two classes of compounds have similar shielding mechanisms. Shieldings of the carbon atoms in the 5-positions of 2-substituted pyridines and those in the 6-positions of 3-substituted pyridines were found to reflect electron release or withdrawal by substituent groups, The pyridinium cation and the compounds 2,2'-dipyridyl and benzonitrile were also investigated.

This report describes the development of a device for the nondestructive testing of resin grouted roof bolts by means of mechanical frequency response. Various alternative methods were evaluated and the mechanical frequency response method was selected. An interactive program of design, testing, and development culminating in the current prototype instrument demonstrated the capabilities of the method and suggested potential applications of the instrument. The resin bolt testing device utilizes a swept frequency dynamic compliance measurement in the 1 to 2 kHz range which is interpreted by an electronic signal processor to give a "GO" or "NO GO? readout. Field tests have shown that the device can reliably determine the bond quality of the front half of the bolt (nearest the roof surface). Tests were carried out on both experimentally installed bolts and typical mine bolts installed by a conventional bolting machine. The development program has led to recommendations for improvement of the prototype and future development work.

Many of the existing thermodynamic values for the titanium halides are estimates, including all the entropies and high-temperature heat contents of their crystalline and liquid phases. This report contains the results of low-temperature heat capacity measurents (which lead to entropy values at 298.15° K,) and high-temperature heat-content measurements of four halides - trichloride, tribromide, tetrabromide, and tetraiodide. The new data are combined with selected heat-of-formation values at 298.15° K. to obtain improved values of the heats and free energies of formation of these halides at high temperatures, thus supplementing the previous data of Kelley and Mah.5/ ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This investigation was conducted under a cooperative arrangement between the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Research. The work was done by Bureau of Mines personnel using Bureau of Mines calorimetric equipment. The Office-of Naval Research supplied the supporting funds and arranged for procuring the samples of the titanium halides. Behavior of hard-burned quicklime was compared with that of soft-burned quicklime in an oxygen converter utilizing oxygen blowing in a rotating cylindrical vessel, set at a 30° to 60° angle to the horizontal and operated at a predetermined speed of rotation. Four pairs of tests were made) each comparing hard lime with soft lime. Three of the pairs differed from one another in the quantity of lime employed) and the fourth differed in blowing time, All four pairs showed an increase in yield when soft lime was used. Three of the pairs revealed that the ratio of the oxygen consumed with soft lime to the oxygen consumed with hard lime was the same as the ratio of metal yield with soft lime to the metal yield with hard lime. The fourth pair contained an error and could not be included. Finally, a close inverse relation was found between the combined iron in the slag and the combined lime in the slag, which can be expressed by the equation pct Fe = 52.67 -0,906 (pct CaO).

The Bureau of Mines tested new designs of drag bit cutters with sintered diamond inserts instead of standard tungsten carbide tips. The bits were tested for orthogonal cutting forces, primary dust generation, and incendivity, with a standard plumb-bob type conical cutter (600 included tip angle) as the reference. Preliminary wear and impact-failure testing were also done. The results were mixed. Two new designs had forces similar to those of the reference bit, but one new design had about twice the normal force. This same design had almost twice the specific energy during shallow cutting but generated an equal or slightly lower amount of primary dust than did the reference bit. Incendivity was eliminated for two radial designs. One conical design had ignition only after more than 15 impacts, but the other conical design was incendive. Impact failure occurred, but not so quickly as anticipated. Over 7,500 impacts on a sandstone face, with a total cutting distance of more than 1,981.2 m, only scuffed the leading edge of the sintered diamond cutting face but put hairline cracks in the substrate mounting pad. Additional design and testing are needed to develop an optimum cutter, but prospects look good for this material.

In the first paper of this series (R. 1. 4333) on the cooperative work with the Eagle-Pitcher Mining & Smelting Co., changes in the nature of the sinter feed were measured by corresponding changes in the retorting temperatures necessary to distill zinc at the best rates; the firing schedules summarized such changes. In this paper, third of the series, are noted same of the changes in practice that were brought about by the need to treat more fused, glassy, and "hard" sinter, as the operators qualify it. Losses of uncondensed zinc were increased by adding zinc-bearing materials from which? the zinc was readily distillable to hard sinter requiring higher-temperatures for zinc distillation. The rates of zinc distillation were increased by grinding the fuel finer; there were few benefits and loss of dust on grinding the sinter finer, unless the fine ?coal and fine sinter were brought into contact by pelletizing, and the pellets made but little dust.

A new record in accident prevention was made by the metal-mining a industry of the United States in 1938, as signalized by a lower fatality rate than in any previous year. The rate was less than half as high as in 1911, the earliest year for which figures are available. A good safety record was also established in the prevention of nonfatal injuries, as the injury rate was lower than in any other years except 1931 to 1935, a 5-year period notable for its unusually low injury rates. Employment was more limited in 1938 than in 1937, both in number of men employed and total number of man-hours worked. The number of workdays per man also was smaller than in 1937. Operating companies reported that 7,233 mines were active in 1938 or some part of the year and that the total number of men employed was 103,027. This figure represents the summation of the average number of men employed as reported by the companies, the average for each mine being that for the period during which the mine was active. The number of employees at all mines in 1938 was 15,402 less than in 1937. Reports covering all mines indicated a total of 188 million man-hours worked during the year, or 21 percent less than the nearly 240 million man-hours worked in 1937. In the performance of this work accidents occurred that resulted in the death of 156 employees and the injury of 1.2,722, each injured employee being disabled for more than the remainder of the clay on which he was hurt.. The fatality rate for 1938 was 0.83 per million man-hours worked, which was 9 percent more favorable than the rate of 0.91 for 1937. Nonfatal injuries occurred at the rate of 67.61 per million man-hours worked, an improvement of 10 percent compared with the injury rate of 75.37 for 1937.
