In early 1993, the Piney River quarry owned and operated by the Blue Ridge Stone Corporation of W.W. Boxley, received a series of complaints from the owners of a 130 year-old historic farmhouse that had been converted into a bed and breakfast establishment. Since the distance from the quarry to the farmhouse was substantial, a unique method of seismic data acquisition was utilized to determine if perceived blast effects were caused by air blast or low amplitude, low frequency ground vibration.

Statistical methods of multiple regression analysis, trend surface analysis and principal components analysis were applied to seismographic data recorded during production blasting at a diabase quarry in the urban area of Campinas (SP), Brazil. The purpose of these analyses was to determine the influence of the following variables: distance @), charge weight per delay (W), and scaled distance (SD) associated with properties of the rock body (orientation, frequency and angle of geological discontinuities; depth of bedrock and thickness of the soil overburden) in the variation of the peak particle velocity (PPV). This approach yielded variables with larger influences (loads) on the variation of ground vibration, as well as behavior and space tendency of this variation. The results showed a better relationship between PPV and D, with D being the most important factor in the attenuation of the ground vibrations. The geological joints and the depth to bedrock have a larger influence than the explosive charges in the variation of the vibration levels, but frequencies appear to be more influenced by the amount of soil overburden.

Some view quantitative risk assessment (QRA) as difficult to understand and complicated to use. They are comfortable with the proven reliability of quantity distance (QD) and question the benefits of applying QRA principles to explosive safety. In response to such questions, a review of the history of the American Table of Distances (ATD) provides insight to the strengths and weaknesses of the concepts behind QD tables. Additionally, a closer look at QRA features that are available today will reveal stunning capabilities and improved user friendliness not available previously. This paper looks at the early days of explosive safety, the use and limitations of QD, the meaning of risk in the context of QRA and discusses recent developments that knock down barriers previously hindering acceptance of QRA among regulatory agencies.

Large diameter, surface blasting is less prone to dead pressing and other disruptions which commonly plague underground and construction blasters. Currently, underground mining of deeper massive deposits with lower grades, harder rock conditions in high strength environments, entails difficulties in caving, fragmentation and seismicity of the ore body. So far, the use of Pre-Conditioning (PC) with Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) has shown positive results in terms of seismic response and caving ability, while preconditioning combined with explosives aims to weaken the rock mass, causing an additional effect on fragmentation.

Proper stemming not only affects the rock breakage process, but also controls the unwanted side effects of blasting such as airblast, ground vibration, and flyrock. Little research has been conducted on the behavior of borehole stemming material under high pressure loading conditions. The methods of selecting stemming particle size and necessary stemming length were previously determined only by trial and error in the field.

This paper reviews the field implementation of R & F Coal's blasting optimization work concerning analysis, prediction, and control of overburden blasting vibrations using site specific measurements and state-of-the-art computer technology. Until the recent past, blasters have provided good to excellent results with tools and processes that have an inherent error. These errors can be found in drilling, explosives delivery quality and consistency, explosives loading consistency, actual explosives performance, and pyrotechnic detonator initiator accuracy. My experience and data from several decades in the industry show the error is often times 10% or higher larger in the dimensions that measure the performance of each of these tools and processes.

"Peru does not produce ammonium nitrate; nevertheless it is a large consumer of both, porous prill (PP) and high-density (HD) varieties. Explosives cost is an important preoccupation in Peru, due tofluctuations of the imported ANFO grade Ammonium Nitrate (AN). The use of Gasified Emulsion (GE)-manufactured with much cheaper HDAN- has become an alternative to reduce such costs. However, some problems were reported in the application of pure GE, including explosive percolation in highly fractured rock and lack of sensitivity by the effect of hydrostatic pressure in very deep holes. It was, hence, proposed to have an explosive based on GE too, but more robust and capable to keep the shape of the explosive column into the blast hole, by minimizing the leakage into the cracks. This could be achieved by adding limited amounts of lower priced HDAN, at the same time of providing gas pressure benefits. Other alternative is to add a low-density material, such as polystyrene prills, into the GE, although it reduces the explosive energy. The chemical gassing controls the density of GE, thus it can be obtained a wide range of densities."

According to the results of high speed photography tests, particle velocity measurement tests and the digital calculation with TP2 software, the shape of shock wave, the declined laws of the shock wave propagation speed and the peak particle velocity are described and analyzed in detail. New viewpoints about the theories of blasting fragmentation based on analysis of the progressive pictures of the fracture region are given. The formula for calculating the depth of fracture regions is established on the basis of the new viewpoints.
