Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. Diesel powered equipment is currently used extensively in mining and tunnelling operations around the world due to its mobility, flexibility and through selective application to enhance productivity. However, the increased use of diesel equipment has exacerbated the pollutant load (including heat, humidity, exhaust gases and particulates) placed upon the environmental systems of many underground operations. This expansion in the use of diesel equipment has prom pted researchers to evaluate m easure ment and control technology. This paper reviews the recent research conducted in various countries.

The historical development of South Yorkshire mining is traced and note made of the liability to generate spontaneous combustion of some of the seams which have been worked. The liability factor is analysed firstly as an inherent property in the material of a coal seam, and secondly as a circumstance of a situation in which access is provided for the air necessary to sustain oxidation. The geological settings in which incidents of heatings have been known to occur is discussed and conditions favouring a natural pre-disposition to spontaneous oxidation exposed, particularly the effect of argillaceous material overlying the seam. An extensive strata-dynamic study follows to demonstrate the situations in which stray air currents tend to impinge on readily oxidizable material. Prevention techniques are indicated as the identification of strata-dynamic situations in which air access to broken coal is induced and thereafter th operational action to seal off the voids which have been opened up so as to exclude air from the broken coal. Measures to reduce the tendency for ventilating air to short circuit across waste voids, and to obviate deflection of air into packs are outlined. The importance of face and roadway design features is demonstrated and the consequences of practices inimical to good control of spontaneous combustion are related. Discussions on means of detection and also on the sealant materials available are included.

Vapour pressures of sulphur have been measured over the temperature range 340-1039°C by means of boiling-point measurements, an internally heated pressure vessel being employed with argon as the pressure medium. The results are expressed satisfactorily by a four-term pressure-temperature relation. At the cited critical temperature of 1040°C the calculated critical pressure is 204 atm. From the pressure-temperature relation and available thermal data for the vapour, the approximate composition of the saturated vapour in terms of the various molecular species has been derived for the critical point

This paper describes the incipient heatings that occurred below ground in the High Main and Main seams at the mine between the years 1963 and 1966. The possible causes, effects and activities associated with such heatings are discussed in an attempt to establish the precautions necessary to minimize such occurrences. The assessment of as many "norms" as possible is made to enable the earliest detection and level of activity to be determined.

The options for designing slopes in complex geological conditions are reviewed. It is shown that modelling, especially numerical modelling, allows a degree of analysis that cannot otherwise be achieved. Examples are presented of how numerical modelling can be used to investigate fundamental aspects of rock mass behaviour. It is demonstrated that an important consequence of change in scale is that the mechanisms of failure also change. The complex failure of the footwall slope at Aznalcollar, a large open-pit mine in southern Spain, is discussed. Numerical modelling with UDEC (universal distinct-element code) has allowed the realistic simulation of displacements measured in the field

The present state of knowledge on this subject may briefly be summarized as follows: (1) The copper content of the slag increases with the grade of the matte in contact with it; on the other hand, the proportion of copper lost decreases as the matte grade increases, because as a general rule a smaller volume of slag is produced when a high-grade matte is made. (2) The presence of CaO and MgO in the slag decreases the copper content of the slag, and the presence of ZnO increases it; the presence of A1203 seems to have little effect. The influence of the silicate degree is not yet clarified, but on theoretical grounds it seems likely that the copper content increases with the silicate degree of the slag. (3) High slag viscosity, high magnetite contents and low density difference between matte and slag all tend to increase the copper loss. The volume of slag is also an important factor. (4) The effect of bath temperature on the copper loss is not clear and further investigation of this point is needed. (5) It appears possible to recover a large part of the copper in the slag by adding FeS, CaS and other sulphides

Whilst spontaneous combustion has never been considered a major problem in south Durham, certain collieries in the area have a history of heatings and precautions are essential. Three collieries are affected - Shotton, Vane Tempest and Seaham - and in the case of the last two, there are huge areas of high quality coal to work under conditions where spontaneous combustion is a real hazard. The seam being extracted has an immediate roof in goaf left by the incomplete extraction of a contiguous seam worked before the turn of the century. The presence of residual coal stocks and old roadways and cavities adds to the difficulty of preventing unwanted air movement. The main preventive measures adopted are the construction of airtight gateside packs and the use of sprayed surface coatings in the gate. Sampling systems and sampling points are described and, in particular the field of continuous monitoring from the surface is examined. The resulting possibility of a quantitative as well as qualitative assessment of the preventative measures required is discussed.

"The Trojan nickel deposit occurs within a pile of ultramafic lavas subjected to a lower amphibolite grade of metamorphism. The lavas form part of the Upper Greenstones (Bulawayan Group) of the Mazoe greenstone belt. The nickel mineralization occurs as disseminated, massive and near-massive sulphides. The massive and near-massive ore occurs along the basal contact of the serpentinite units and is overlain by the more abundant disseminated ore, which occurs within the serpentinite. The main sulphide minerals are pyrrhotite. pentlandite and chalcopvrite. Minor amounts of millerite and pvrite are present. The Ni : Cu ratio in all three types of ore averages 15:1.The intercumulus nature of sulphides in the near-massive ore and similar textures occasionally seen in the disseminated ore indicates a magmatic origin of the mineralization. The basal position of the near-massive and massive ore suggests that the sul­ phides settled out under gravity during the emplacement and crystallization of a peridotitic magma. The deposit has been deformed and some of the primary massive ore has been remobilized into veins and breccias. The disseminated mineralization now occurs mainly as blebs of sulphides intergrown with silicate minerals or as stringers of sulphides between foliation planes in the serpentinite."

An algorithm is proposed for updating the probability of slope failure on the basis of sequential testing using Bayesian probability theory. The approach is novel and computationally straightforward since, unlike other methods, updating of the probability of failure is carried out directly. This is because the probability is treated as a random variable whereas other methods have considered it as a purely deterministic value or as a function of shear strength parameters that are updated individually. The prior information required for the Bayesian analysis is obtained by a conventional probabilistic analysis. An exponential distribution is then used for the probability of failure, applying the principle of maximum entropy. This distribution is continually updated for individual slope cells, where repetitive excavation creates several such cells and a corresponding series of Bayesian estimates of the probability of failure is obtained. The approach is applicable to most simulations but there are limitations on its use. A more mathematically rigorous refinement using the beta distribution is currently under development

A mathematical algorithm for 'cyclewise' computer simulation of the locked-cycle test has been derived and used to study an idealised laboratory-scale model of a closed ball-mill circuit. Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The following is an account of the character and mineralogical composition of the various types.

"Study of gravity concentrates from the gold-recovery circuit of the Kambalda nickel mill has enabled an assessment to be made of the nature, relative abundance and compositional variability of platinum group element (PGE) minerals and other associated heavy minerals that are present in the Kambalda nickel deposits. The major platinum minerals are sperrylite, PtAs2, and nioncheite, (Pt. Pd, Ni)(Te, Bi)2, and the major palladium minerals are sudburvite, (Pd, Pt, Ni)(Sb, Te, Bi), stibiopalladinite, Pd6Sb2, and palladoarsenide, Pd2 (As, Sb), together with a palladium antimonide and a palladium arsenide that have not been fully characterized. Palladian melonites, which contain up to 10 wt% Pd, and palladian nickeline are also important PGE hosts. Sperrylite and sudburyite are by far the most abundant discrete minerals in the gravity concentrates.Gold occurs as argentian, cuprian and nickeloan—cuprian gold, and as the tellurides calaverite, petzite and auriferous hessite. Silver is present in petzite, hessite and volynskite. Other rare phases contained in the gravity concentrates include native bismuth, altaite, frohbergite, breithauptite, gersdorffite, parkerite, scheelite, tantalite, cassiterite, rutile, bunsenite, gahnite, barite and uvarovite.Descriptions of in-situ occurrences of PGE minerals at Kambalda are rare. Michenerite, PdBiTe, and testibiopalladite, PdSbTe, have been described from a telluride-rich quartz-carbonate vein that intersects massive sulphide ore in Lunnon Shoot. Moncheite has been observed in chalcopyrite-rich stringers, and sudburyite occurs as inclusions in nickeline in a quartz- carbonate veinlet. No discrete PGE minerals have been found within the massive and matrix ore zones in the Kambalda ore- shoots, and the geochemical distribution of PGE suggests that the formation of discrete PGE phases may be related to post- magmatic processes—in particular, metamorphic segregation of sulphides, and the interaction of the ore sulphides, containing PGE in solid solution, with younger hydrothermal fluids. This has led to local redistribution of the PGE, with concentration in footwall stringers and veins, and in reaction zones."

There has been considerable effort in the UK, and more widely in the European Community, to formulate the best ventilation practices and other means of minimising these incidents. Practices and procedures to prevent ignitions are discussed in the light of the risks from current mining methods.

Mineral production in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland during the last ten years has been confined to the sporadic production of industrial minerals—for example marble, anorthosite, limestone, talc and silica. From 1962 onwards there has been an upsurge in mineral exploration in the Highlands, increasing in tempo from 1966 onwards due to the efforts of the Institute of Geological Sciences, the Highlands and Islands Development Board, and private and public companies. Geological, chemical and economic aspects of some of the more interesting mineral prospects are discussed: these include anorthosite, feldspar, magnetite, quartzite and brucite marble. Reference is made to a geochemical survey undertaken in the Rosehall district of Sutherland, the results obtained being summarised. Problems that affect the future of mineral exploration in the Highlands are stated.

The wastage of timber in coal-mines that is caused by decay is very great; in fact, far greater in this country than is generally realized. Mr. E. W. Peters estimates that of the whole wastage of timber in mines in the United States of America, 50 per cent, is due to decay and insects; of this 50 per cent, an overwhelming part is due to decay. The most efficient methods of decreasing this grave loss can be devised only by co-operation of the mining engineer and the scientific expert, and it is partly in the hope of procuring such collaboration that this paper is written. It contains, therefore, a resume of our present knowledge of the decay of wood, and of the economic methods of checking this in mines; but, with a view to improving those methods, it also directs attention to the gaps in our knowledge and the means by which these can be filled by future investigation
