In the frame of Bioshale FP6 project, the bioprocessing of a polymetallic and polymineral concentrate produced in an industrial operation in Lubin, Poland, was assessed. Following successful batch culture tests, processing in continuous conditions was tested to determine the main specifications for the application of the stirred-tank technology to this sulphide concentrate from black shale ores. The experimental work was carried out in a laboratory-scale unit consisting of 3 stirred tanks (50L or 20L) using an acidophilic and moderate thermophilic bacterial population. Different configurations of the unit and key operating parameters were tested (nutrient medium composition, solids concentration, rates of agitation and aeration). Scientific and technical approaches, such as bacterial community structure and mineralogical analysis were implemented in order to better understand the chemical and biochemical reactions occurring in the system. Using the data produced during the continuous operation, downstream processing assessment for both copper and silver recovery was also carried out. The best copper recovery obtained in the continuous operation was 92% and a hot brine leaching of the bioleach residue (PLINT process) allowed to recover 92% of the silver. A preliminary tech-no-economic evaluation of Lubin concentrate bioprocessing including bioleaching, copper and silver recoveries demonstrated the potential economic feasibility. Recovery of silver plays an important role in the economy of the process. This study presents promising values to further investigate this bioprocessing option.

The steady-state and dynamic behaviour of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills are arguably best described using a population model that caters for the breakage kinetics and the material trans-port of rock and pulp inside the mill. Breakage kinetics are usually expressed in terms of a specific breakage rate function and a separate primary breakage distribution function. Material transport usually invokes the concept of a specific discharge rate function. Unfortunately, the breakage rate and breakage distribution functions for SAG mills are very difficult to estimate uniquely from plant data alone. Simplifying assumptions must be made to over-come this problem, which leads to many unresolved dilemmas with regard to whether or not the de-rived functions are accurate, precise, and reflect reality. For example, it is sometimes assumed that the breakage distribution function for a SAG mill treating run-of-mine ore can be derived from laboratory dropweight and tumbling tests on small rocks in narrow size ranges. Such tests hardly reflect the environmental conditions likely to be encountered in a pilot or production SAG mill where there is a wide spectrum of particle sizes. It is shown that the dilemmas associated with standard population balance models (models that utilise separate breakage rate and breakage distribution functions) can be overcome by expressing breakage behaviour inside a SAG mill in terms of a single function. This function is an energy-based cumulative breakage rate function defined as the fractional rate at which particles and rocks coarser than a given size break to below that size per unit specific energy input. A model for SAG milling is formulated, which invokes the concept of a cumulative breakage rate function. Comparisons are made between the mathematical structure of this ?simple model? and standard population balance models. Perhaps the most attractive feature of the ?simple model? is that the cumulative breakage rate function can be uniquely estimated from measurements of size distributions and mass flows of the feed and discharge streams together with the size distribution and holdup mass of the mill charge. Such measurement can easily be made at pilot scale. It is concluded that this simplified approach to SAG milling may turn out to be the quickest way to fully describe and quantify the performance of these very complex mills.

This paper describes results of laboratory studies on recovery of dissolved uranium values from alkaline leach slurries of a medium-grade uranium ore from Gogi (Karnataka, India) using the resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. Besides anionic carbonate complex of uranium, the other major ionic constituents of the leach solution are CO32-, HCO3-, SO42- and MoO42-. The total dissolved solutes (TDS) are about 45 g/L. Various commercially available strong bases anionic resin-in-pulp (RIP) grade resins ? both macroporous and gel type, were studied with respect to their loading capacity. Parametric variation studies were then carried out with the short-listed resins. Results of the semi-continuous counter-current extraction and elution tests indicated extraction efficiency of about 98% and practically complete elution of the loaded uranium values with NaCl eluant using a gel type polystyrene based resin grafted with quaternary ammonium ion. Selective separation of alumina, silica, calcite and apatite from hematite was achieved through microbiologically induced flotation and flocculation in presence of bacteria (B.subtilis) and that of hematite from apatite after interaction with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Bacterial and yeast metabolites containing extracellular proteins were characterized from mineral-grown cell free extract. Bacteria and yeast can adhere to mineral surfaces and influence subsequent separation of the minerals. Bacteria functioned as a stronger depressant for hematite, while yeast cells depressed apatite at neutral pH. Selective affinity of the bacterial and yeast cells towards the mineral surface was observed through adsorption studies. Extracellular proteins (EP) were isolated from B.subtilis and yeast. The protein profile of the EP of bacterial and yeast cells grown in presence and absence of minerals was studied. This study has demonstrated the utility and amenability of microbially-induced mineral beneficiation of iron ores through bacterial and yeast cells and their metabolic by products.

"Sand is a naturally occurring granular material that is a result of the physical or chemical breakdown of rocks. Raw/natural sand contains various minerals, and it is this combination of minerals that brings the value to the construction aggregate industry. However, it is the quartz component of sand that is valued in its application as industrial silica in glass, high purity quartz, foundry sand, and oil and gas fracturing. Depending on the industry, the grade requirements can be the concentration of SiO2, particle size or shape, as well as contaminants such as the heavy refractory minerals, clays, fines, and alkali metals. With the ever declining mineral feed grade, processors continue to face challenges making the industry specific concentrate grade. As such, it becomes more important to tailor make the processing reagents to fit the mineral, processing conditions, and desired quality specification. This paper focuses on the application of novel collectors towards the beneficiation of sand for each of the major industrial silica applications. INTRODUCTIONQuartz is a mineral composed of a framework of silicon and oxygen atoms. It is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s continental crust. There are many species of quartz, which are defined by the particle size, shape, and color. Silica sand is one of those species, which is the byproduct of the physical or chemical breakdown of quartz containing rocks or crystals. Geologist define silica sand as a silica mineral with a particle size between 0.05 and 2 mm in diameter (Zdunczyk, 2001). Silica sand has significant value to society in recreation (beach sand and toy boxes), construction aggregate (concretes and asphalt), industry (iron & steel casting, fracturing proppants, and glass), as well as specialty products such as semiconductors or silicon wafers used in electronics.The aggregate business is the dominant consumer of silica sand products. Conversely, glass making, foundries (casting material), abrasives, and fracturing proppants are the dominant applications for industrial silica sand. Not much beneficiation is required for sand products going into the construction industry, other than sizing and scrubbing to remove clay. However, the industrial silica sand applications are dependent on particle size, shape, and degree of contaminants, which sets the market value (table 1). Therefore, as the more specialty products are produced, more sophisticated techniques and chemistry need to be applied to ensure the appropriate quality is met."

The ever increasing demand for energy and the progressive depletion of crude oil resources, have renewed interest in oil shale as an alternative fuel resource. Weathered oil shale samples were assembled from El-Nakheil phosphate mine in Quseir area, Eastern desert, Egypt. The oil shale samples were prepared and analyzed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometry), and optical microscopic techniques. Rock-Eval pyrolysis and total organic carbon were used to study shale hydrocarbon potential. A leaching procedure using inorganic and organic acids was used to selectively dissolve the oil shale associated ash forming minerals. XRD results showed that calcite is the dominant carbonate mineral, whereas primary silicate minerals are quartz and montmorillonite. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observations indicated that the organic matter is dispersed throughout the rock matrix. The acid soluble fraction upon leaching was determined to be 37.59 and 42.74 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. The TOC was increased from 20.78 to 29.88 and 34.09 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. "While there is a large industry based on recovering platinum group metals (PGM) from complex sulphide ores containing Cu and Ni, there is little information on the thermodynamics of the matte phase formed on smelting the ore and in particular the behaviour of Pt in the matte.The equilibrium between metallic platinum and industrial mattes was studied in a series of experiments where a small quantity of matte (5g) and platinum foil of 150 µm thickness (0.5 g) were equilibrated in magnesia crucibles at 1400°C under conditions where the oxygen and sulphur partial pressures were fixed.The chemical composition of the phases was determined from EDS analysis using a scanning electron microscope. Line scans were initially used to confirm that the foils had attained a uniform composition across their thickness. The composition of the matte was determined from analysis of an area of matte including the small metallic droplets and dendrites.The results of the equilibrium study are presented in terms of how the oxygen and the sulphur pressure affect the distribution of Pt, between the matte and the alloy foil (Lmatte/alloy). Other variables investigated were matte chemistry, i.e., the Fe content and the temperature. The activities of platinum in the mattes were calculated using a regular solution model describing the activity-composition relationship in the alloy."

"A worldwide decline in competency levels of practicing metallurgists over recent decades has become clearly evident and is a common topic of discussion among senior practitioners and professional associations. The associated impacts on the industry are material and include operational inefficiencies, missed optimisation opportunities and suboptimal new plant designs. There are many contributing factors to this condition. Decrease in competency is particularly evident both in regions where imbalance between supply and demand has led to a general reduction in experience levels for comparable roles over time and in emerging regions where a rapid rise in demand for practitioners has occurred in conjunction with rapid economic development and industrialization. The context, depth and breadth of education curricula and levels vary with location such that solutions to the technical competency dilemma may need to be developed specifically for each region with these influences in mind. Delivering, demonstrating and maintaining competencies are a critical requirement of undergraduate training and ongoing professional development. Other factors such as generational and cultural characteristics and expectations, political influences, role requirements and employment reward and recognition systems all play a critical role in determining if core competencies can be effectively developed, applied and subsequently maintained. This paper reviews factors impacting and some common approaches to competency development. The authors’ experiences in the management of professional development efforts within the global industry are reviewed and a blueprint proposed to address industry requirements in this area."

The lifecycle of a resource, specifically a metal, is often depicted as circle from primary production from mining to minerals processing and via manufacturing and use to disposal and recycling. When a material is recycled, it is considered as saved energy compared to producing the material from primary source. This is, however, a simplified representation. At each step of the life cycle, there are changes in the quality of the material due to different materials chemical and physical interaction, phase transformations due to diffusion, radiation etc. Due to these physical and chemical phenomena there are losses of material, which as determined by thermodynamics are not recoverable within the life cycle. This can be considered as an increase embodied energy per mass unit of substance and loss exergy from the material cycle. With low cyclic loss, the material will remain in the recycling loop for a long time, while with high cyclic loss it will disappear fast. Where you put the material determines how fast it disappears from the resource cycle. In this research paper the phenomena of quality degradation of material and idea of increase of embodied energy and exergy loss within a resource cycles is portrayed. The cyclic nature of material states and transitions and energy consequences of material quality degradation as well as the parameters affecting the length of the time scales of the material cycles are described. Currently the cyclic embedded energy and the history of material is not taken under consideration in generic life cycle assessment. This easily results into a conclusion that lifetime of product is optimized only in terms of how much energy an appliance uses during its lifetime, while ignoring the loss of embedded energy due to the effects caused by the environs the material is subjected to during the cycle. Better description of the time properties of material give us a possibility to design toward optimum lifetime of products in terms of resource efficiency. In sulfide mineral flotation, the efficiency of separation is severely affected by the presence of non-sulfide gangue minerals, such as altered silicates and serpentines. Although this is an acknowledged fact, most studies in mineral processing have focused on value minerals, and studies on gangue minerals affecting flotation performance are quite rare, and even those that do are limited in scope. This paper is an attempt to highlight the use of grade-recovery curves in studying the effects of gangue minerals. Specifically, we present the flotation response of problematic Ni and Cu ores which show highly uncharacteristic but similar grade-recovery characteristics despite the very different mineralogy and try to understand this behavior and the underlying mechanism. Finally, we propose chemical modifiers as solutions to overcome the detrimental effects of these gangue minerals and improve efficiency of flotation performance. The productivity index of the Coopracarcegua Ltda., a mid-size coal mining company of Norte de Santander, Colombia, was related absenteeism using accident, productivity and profit data four years. The analysis was based on type, severity and frequency of accidents, number of absentee days; price per metric ton, and other relevant parameters. The enterprise is formed by 5 different mines of thermic coal, each one with different exploitation technologies and different productivity. Each mine was analysed separately and the loss of profit due to absenteeism was calculate for each one. The study showed that the foregone earnings due to absenteeism in terms of the whole productivity of the enterprise was about of 6.6% of the total profit average the 4 years, with calculated values of 14.7%, 3.5%, 8.4% and 4% per year in the evaluated period. The study identified that the most important cause of absenteeism was "General Disease". The foregone earnings in 2009, the highest loss for the analysed period, was about US$ 0.937 million and during the whole evaluated period was US$ 2.46 million.

"The rapid developments in computer vision and computational resources are creating new possibilities for the use of machine vision systems for industrial control. A number of commercial image analysis systems exist, and research into improved measurements of froth performance is ongoing. An integral part of the implementation of these systems is the validation of the relationship between image analysis measurements and flotation cell performance. This paper discusses the factors affecting concentrate flow and presents the results obtained from one such system with respect to its ability to estimate the flow of concentrate from a flotation cell.The relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell was investigated on two industrial operations, both processing PGM (Platinum Group Metal) bearing ores. Results are presented that show a relationship between froth flow speed and concentrate yield."

"After almost 100 years, since the first commercial application began in Australia, flotation has shown an extraordinary growth and nearly 2 billion tons of ore per year are presently treated by flotation processes. During this time flotation has promoted a wide scope of research activities ranging from fundamental chemistry and hydrodynamic studies to studies of industrial operations. In general, fundamental studies have been mainly related to ideal situations. In recent years, however, large efforts have been focusing on achieving a better insight into the actual sub-processes provided by the development of new and more sophisticated instrumentation. Since the massive incorporation of flotation columns, around 15 years ago, a renewed interest in flotation fundamental studies, process modelling and new cell designs have been observed worldwide. The key role of the froth has been recognized as an independent and sometimes rate limiting process step. Thus, separation of pulp and froth process stages seems the most appropriate in terms of process modelling, diagnostic, design and scale-up purposes.In relation to flotation equipment development, until the middle of the 1970’s, only the sub-aeration mechanical cells were dominant. Since the 1980’s, the use of pneumatic cells and forced air mechanical cells has emerged strongly. Also, in the last decade, flotation equipment has shown a dramatic increase in size, reaching values of 200m3 in unitary mechanical cells and more than 300m3 in columns. The general feeling, however, is that, despite the great advance observed in terms of process knowledge, the mechanisms and principles of industrial flotation cells design and scale-up are still not fully understood.Advances in process instrumentation and control now in use allow for more efficient operations, both in metallurgical performance and savings in operating costs."

The analysis of particle capture by an air bubble by two separate phenomena of collision and attachment has been difficult due to the uncertainty in determining when and where the two phenomena begin and terminate at the bubble surface, respectively. Therefore, a unified analysis was developed by solving the motion equation for the particle capture as one process. No distinction be-tween collision and attachment was made. Both the liquid film described by the micro-hydrodynamic resistance functions and the surface forces were included in the new model. The model predictions with the DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) surface forces did not agree with the experimental trajectories of latex and silica spheres. The model predictions with the inclusion of the non-DLVO attractive surface force agreed with the experimental data. The non-DLVO force reduced the repulsion between the non-attaching particle and the bubble, and significantly increased the attraction between the attaching particle and the bubble. The unified analysis is capable of predicting particle capture without the use of the induction time. The unified analysis also shows significant influence of the short-range hydrodynamic interactions on the collision which has been previously ignored.

Under the AMIRA P9 project the three-product cyclone-an off-shoot of the conventional hydro-cyclone-that produces three distinct products has been developed. The three-product cyclone shows great promise as a classifier in mineral processing. Industrial and pilot plant trials performed to assess its performance in the classification of the UG2 platinum ore, indicate that the presence of an extra overflow product stream that captures the mid-sized particles, provides improved classification efficiency. To assess the split on component density, samples from the feed and product streams were screened and assays by size for chromite (? = 4.8) and silica (? = 2.65) were obtained. Results from tests performed using this type of hydrocyclone in a number of applications indicates that it can be applied successfully in circuit configurations where the conventional hydrocyc-lone is not suitable. Utilising the three-product cyclone to classify the UG2 platinum ore resulted in an intermediate overflow product stream containing the mid-sized low density silicates and relatively fine high density chromite particles while the finer overflow contained mostly fine silicates and chromite particles. The coarse chromite and silicates reported to the underflow. Due to the increased number of products, the method of using efficiency curves was extended to cater for the increased number of products in the three-product cyclone. Although significant differences in the classification performance of the three-product cyclone were noticed with variations in machine variables a consistent method of assessing the performance was applied. The efficiency curve was adopted and applied and separate efficiency curve properties were obtained for each product stream. The methodology was applied to the component data, and efficiency curve proper-ties for each key component were obtained and compared. This paper discusses the application of the efficiency curve to cyclones producing more than two products and extending the methodology to the different components in the feed.

A red copper plate, discovered in the ruins of Dachengshan in Hebei province, was recognized as a forged one rather than a cast one, which means it was probably made from natural copper during the Longshan Culture period (2200~2208 BC) in the Chinese history. The copperware, found in the Niangniang Tai relics in Wuwei city, Gansu province, contains 99.6% copper and 0.4% Sn, Pb, Sb and Ni, which was guessed to be made during the Qijia Culture about 2000~ 1900 BC in the Chinese history in the late Neolithic before Shang dynasty. This shows that Chinese ancestors were able to distinguish, sort and use some native metals and minerals more than 4000 years ago.

Europe retains a modest position in world mining activity in terms of scale of production and mineral reserves but maintains a non-negligible role in the world mining industry. The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.
