Sossego was the first Vale SAG mill operation to process copper-gold ore. It is located in Para state, south east of Amazon region in Brazil. The comminution circuit was designed to treat 41 000 metric tons per day comprising primary crushing, one 11.6 m SAG mill operating in closed configuration with cone crushers, followed by two 6.7 ball mills. In the first three years of continuous operation Vale investigated alternatives for obtained improved performance of the circuit by investigating operating conditions, mainly focusing on SAG mill. A number of actions were then implemented, which resulted in significant increase in overall production. Vale then decided to further assess the performance of the comminution circuit as a function of ore characteristics. A comprehensive ore characterization program was then conducted, together with the calibration of mathematical models on the basis of surveys carried out at the industrial circuit. The simulator was then used to predict the production level associated to each ore type, as well as to establish the optimized circuit configuration and tailored operating conditions. The ongoing validation program is planned to consolidate the selected strategy, as well as showing the benefits in adopting such indices in mine planning, as opposed to rather simplistic approaches. This paper describes in detail the main aspects of optimizing the industrial circuit performance, as well as the successful method for predicting the production as a function of ore characteristics.

This paper mainly reported separation manganese silver oxidized ores process by amylum de-gradation reduction and its influencing factors. When dosage is given according to nMn : nH2SO4 : n(C6H10O5)n : nH2O=1:k21.8: k116.66:30, the amount of up to 95.93% Mn leach rate and less than 2% silver loss can be obtained. Cyanidation process was used to extracted silver from leaching Mn residues. Silver leach rate could reach 94.15% at consumed amount of 1kg/t NaCN for 1h. Silver leach recovery rate was more than 92.27% by leaching Mn and cyanidation two-step processes so manganese and silver were separated effectively.

Crushing plants are widely used around the world as a pre-processing step in the mineral and mining industries and as standalone processing plants in the aggregates industry. Despite automation and different advanced model predictive control, a lot of the process is still managed by operators. The operators affect a lot of the performance. The numbers of the improvement they can achieve are at least as big as the advanced control algorithms?, today. Therefore, it is also important to train the operators so they know how to behave in different situations. Models for crushers and other production units have been developed during the years and the latest add is the different units? dynamic behavior being brought in, which gives the crushing plants dynamic time dependant performance. This can be used as a simulator for operators training. By connecting a Human Machine Interface (HMI) to a dynamic simulator with the models incorporated, a training environment for operators can be achieved. In this paper, a dynamic crushing plant simulator implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK has been connected to an HMI via a PLC. The HMI is placed in a control room at the university and complemented with monitors showing sequences from the process connected to the simulations, thus creating a realistic control room for training. In the created training environment, the operators can be trained under realistic conditions. Simple training scenarios and how they could be simulated are discussed. Apart from the increased level of knowledge and experience among the operators, the time is an important factor. While a real crushing plant is still being built, the operators to be can already be trained, saving a lot of the commissioning time. Bor flotation tailings are very interesting from two reasons: first, is having due value presently, and second represent serious pollutant into this region of Balkan. This paper is only one small part of investigation about processing of valuable minerals from tailings, and desulphurization of this biggest pollutant in the same time, by refloating. The main objective of this work is to pay attention on this problem for resolve greatest environ-mental problem of Serbia and Balkan in the nearly future. Bor is potential regional risk spot, since that failure of its tailings dams would release high amounts of toxic materials that would reach the Danube River. The basic goal of this experimental investigation was finding some possibility for flotation tailings treatment by classical froth flotation. In order was obtained material effect through copper recovery, and environmental protection by moving the rest of reprocessing into the safe place. The work present obtained results of laboratory tests in two laboratories: laboratory of mineral and recycling technology at the faculty in Bor, and laboratory of department of mineral processing of ITNMS in Belgrade.

In this study the extraction of zirconium and hafnium has been investigated by solvent extraction using Cyanex 302 in various media such as nitric, sulfuric and hydrochloric acid has been investigated. Effect of various parameters such as type and acid concentration, extractant concentration, type of diluent, equilibrium time, various foreign ions and finally type and concentration of strip-ping agent have been studied. The results showed that nitric acid was optimum media for extraction of zirconium and hafnium. The extraction of zirconium and hafnium occurred quantitatively in the concentration of higher than 4 M nitric acid but in hydrochloric acid media, quantitative extraction obtains over 8 M HCl. In sulfuric acid media, extraction of zirconium and hafnium is negligible. Stripping studies showed that the optimum reagent for stripping was 0.5M sulfuric acid.

Phosphate tailings through Flotation contains large amount of dolomite which is difficult to be separated from apatite. In this present research, phosphate tailings is recycled by Flotation i.e. re-processing. High-purity dolomite with purity as high as 91.17% is seperated, which contains 19.82% of MgO. The results of orthogonal test show that the effect of various levels of different factors on the high-purity dolomite floatated. Future utilization of purified dolomite is also discussed: magnesium fertiliser especially magnesium phosphate is expected to be an ideal product from high-purity dolomite.

Li-ion batteries are now used in electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Nanostructured Li(NiyMnzCo1-y-z)O2 is one of the more popular cathode chemistries for automotive Li-ion battery, due to its enhanced properties such as large surface area, short diffusion length, enhanced ionic and electronic conductivity, improved mechanical strength and structural integrity [Pan et al, 2013]. Recycling of Li-ion batteries helps to mitigate environmental effects of virgin metal extractions along with improper disposal of end of life batteries. To fulfill these objectives of the recycling, recovery of pure streams of the involved metals should be considered. In this study, the batteries were first discharged and dismantled in an inert atmosphere (Ar). The electrodes were then heat treated in a box furnace. This was done in order to break the chains of the adhesive (PVDF) and consequently separate the metallic substrates Cu and Al from the electrochemically active compound. This heat-treatment also helped to simplify the dissolution of the metal constituents in the electrochemically active compound from the cathode in the acid leaching process. Solvent extraction was chosen to achieve separation and recovery of metals with higher purity from these leachates. In the scope of the present work, a complete process from the point of dismantling to separation of constituent metals using solvent extraction was studied.

In surfactant flooding, surfactants added are often a mixture of the same type of molecules with different lengths of carbon chains. The relationship between a single, pure surfactant solution and crude oil is seldom studied. Additionally, up to now, alkylbenzene sulfonates are applied widely in surfactant flooding, such as Daqing oilfield, China. A factory producing alkylbenzene sulfonates will enlarge its yield to 20 000 tons per year over there. For the purposes of widening the alkylben-zene sulfonates? application, 16 kinds of pure alkylbenzene sulfonates were synthesized through Friedel-Crafts acylation and Wolff-Kishner reduction reactions, and the compounds? molecular structures were confirmed by 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectra. The factors affecting interfacial tension (IFT), such as, surfactant type, oil composition, electrolyte concentration, and alkali concentration were considered. The synthesized pure surfactants? critical micelle concentration (CMC) and optimal salinity were measured through interfacial tension technique. According to lab experiments results, heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (2SY) was synthesized in magnifying scale in Jinzhou Wash Chemical Plant and the coretests were conducted using it. The results showed that the homemade heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (2SY) flooding can improve oil displacement efficiency 20% more than water flooding at surfactant?s concentration from 0.05%(wt) to 0.2 %(wt).

"Mining operations are often located in remote arid environments with limited access to fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in such cases makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing plants. Such plants treating Cu- Mo sulfide ores in seawater have been fully operational in Chile (e.g. Las Luces, Centinela). In many cases process waters used in commercial flotation plants (e.g. Mt Keith in Western Australia) are even more concentrated electrolyte solutions than seawater. This paper is an attempt at classification of the flotation operations carried out in process waters that are concentrated electrolyte solutions.INTRODUCTIONAccording to Gleick (1966), of the total Earth’ water resources 97.5% is in the oceans and ice caps, and thus only about 2.5% is fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in many parts of the world makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing operations. The existing commercial operations using seawater as well as recent research projects that deal not only with sulfide ores but also with apatite ores provide a lot of information that can now be generalized. The progress that has been made in this area is reviewed and based on this information an attempt is being made at classifying the flotation operations carried out in highly concentrated electrolyte process waters.SALT FLOTATIONFlotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions was studied by Klassen (Klassen, 1963). He reported that hydrophobic, bituminous coals, could float in salt solutions without addition of any other flotation agents. The process is referred to as salt flotation. Other inherently hyhrophobic minerals (e.g. talc, graphite, sulfur, etc.) were shown to behave similarly (Klassen and Mokrousov, 1963)As Figure 1 shows, some coals float quite well in solutions of Na2SO4, NaCl and NaNO3 (Klassen, 1963). While there are differences between the tested salts (explained by different foamabilities of these solutions) all the tests indicate that only bituminous coals float well in concentrated electrolyte solutions. 0.3 M solutions are quite sufficient to initiate a good and very fast flotation. If wettability of various coals is compared it becomes obvious that these well floating coals are very hydrophobic bituminous coals (Figure 2)."

"This paper presents early results from a case study at the Mount Polley porphyry copper mine in British Columbia, Canada. Daily mineralogical data was acquired and reconciled with daily plant assay and recovery balances to interrogate the mineralogical controls on plant performance. After commissioning, the Minesite machine operated smoothly and reliably, creating daily data to generate mineralogical balances around the circuit for a period of several weeks. The key data, on final products were produced within 13 hours of the end of the respective operating period. The resulting information allowed for a greater understanding of the opportunities and limitations of the Mount Polley metallurgy. In this paper, how this information can be used to help long term strategic planning for the operation, as well as mine planning and production forecasting and the fine tuning of day to day mill operations is described. Early data available at the time of preparing this paper indicated that roughly 40% of the sulphide losses, or 32% of total copper losses existed as low grade inclusions in +75 micron tails. This represented the dominant form of long term copper losses, demonstrated repeatedly in the routine analytical data. However, on a day-to-day basis, the amount of copper present as chrysocolla is the major driver behind variations in total copper recovery. The degree to which this influences mill recovery is valuable to the geologist or mine planner. As they are armed with mineral speciation information for future ores, this will allow for improved mine planning, prediction of copper recoveries and production forecasting. The data was also started to find value in the mill by showing what caused sulphide losses. In the roughers, for example, the data showed poor recovery was the result of poor flotation performance and not any changes the speciation of copper sulphides or their liberation characteristics."

According to the unique properties and many applications of nano silver powder, it was prepared from acid leaching tail solution. The low value residual gold and silver ions were occurred with fellow heavy metals as pollutants (Fe2+, Cu 2+and Zn2+) in acid leaching tail solution in Mouteh gold mine in Iran. Preparation of nano silver particles was achieved in two steps: first, by addition of ammonia as separation step and second by using different reagents as precipitation and extraction steps. Different controlled parameters were including pH, residence time and temperature, mixing time, and reducing reagents to metals molar ratio. Acid leaching process was carried out with sulphuric and nitric acid via suitable reductants. In order to remove copper, zinc, and silver ions from solution, all of the conditions were controlled. The optimum conditions for preparation of nano silver powder with less than 90 nm were pH 10.5, hydrazine/methanol to silver molar ratio of 3 to 4, and reduction time of 5 min in 45 °C. The results were evaluated via SEM, A.A and UV- Vis spectroscopy analytical methods.

The flotation behavior of jamesonite was investigated with ethyl xanthate as a collector. It has been shown that jamesonite has good floatability from pH 2 to pH 12, and relatively poor floata-bility at pH>12. The flotation of jamesonite was also dependent on pulp potential at certain pH val-ues. The potential-pH range for jamesonite flotation was established. The FTIR spectroscopy analy-sis and XPS measurement showed that the major adsorption product of ethyl xanthate on jamesonite was lead ethyl xanthate and antimony ethyl xanthate. The intensity of the FTIR signals of metal ethyl xanthate adsorbed on jamesonite and the flotation response of jamesonite were correlated with pulp potentials.

Mechanism of BK501 in desiliconization from bauxite was studied by use of flotation test, EDS, ?-potential, FTIR. Results of flotation show that almost all of diaspore can be depressed when BK501 is put into pulp ranging from pH 4~12, in the meanwhile kaolinite is slightly activated. In the light of surface analyses, it is concluded that the adsorption of reagent on the diaspore is dominant by chemical interaction. Moreover, kaolinite may float more by addition of BK501 because of flocculation.

The iron ore from Yichang in China assaying 41.64% Fe and 1.02% P is a low grade and high phosphorus oolitic hematite ore. The separation of iron minerals from gangue minerals in the ore by conventional processing techniques is ineffective owing to their close similar properties. The modification of iron minerals by microwave-assisted reduction was investigated in order to improve separability of the ore. The effects of microwave-assisted reduction on the subsequent low intensity magnetic separation and floatation were examined. The results show that the main factors affecting the reduction and separation process are grinding size, reduction temperature and reductant. Fine grinding of the microwave-treated ore to smaller than 0.074mm was found to be imperative due to the tiny dissemination characteristics of iron oxide minerals. After magnetizing reduction by microwave heating at 500?, the magnetic concentrate containing 58.36% Fe and 0.67% P can be obtained with the Fe recovery of 91.28%. Magnetizing reduction drops the floatability of iron oxide minerals, thus reverse flotation is fit for upgrading the magnetic concentrate to contain 62.13% Fe and 0.21% P with Fe recovery of 81.59%. Compared with present microwave-assisted reduction technique of carbon reductant, using a waste iron powder as reductant is a novel and effective technique without the green house effect caused by the release of CO and CO2. Waste iron powder with a faster response to microwave heating then coke and charcoal can be recovered by magnetic separation in a low cost and plays the role of reductant and microwave heating accelerator.

"Multistage model designed and used for more detailed description of floatation process. The study develops a new model of flotation kinetics description. It defines flotation as process that consists of several stages: air bubbles and particles are separate, air bubbles and particles form a raising aggregate, aggregate raises to froth layer. This description significantly differs from commonly used model, which is much simplified. The multistage model gives an in-depth description and considers different aspects of flotation. Experimental approval of the new model resulted in its accuracy.The model is to be used for description of all flotation processes’ kinetics of wastewater treatment. It helps in accurate designing of flotation treatment plants and may be used for further research of flotation process. Columnar flotation installation was designed by using multistage model. This installation consists of new tubular aerators with special ejectors, froth pressing system as well as unit of thin-layering lighting to catch microflotocomplex “particle – bubble”. Usage of tubular aerators allowed to aerate the overall volume of pulp. Due to use of special ejectors with longer mixing camera we state higher volume of small-sized floto-active bubbles. Use of multistage model allowed to optimize and get higher technological results of potash salts enrichment. Tests were conducted on centrifuges-floatation installation system. Meanwhile, froth concentrate contained mainly thin hydrophobic particles sized circa 0,1 mm. As a result we set that during floatation cleaning process of froth concentrate 95-98% of chloride potassium (KCI) is derived from foam.The final product satisfies production quality. Columnar floatation installation productivity was 17 – 21 m3/m2h, which is a high technological result. Columnar floatation installation is one of the best examples of concentrating equipment using nearly all technological indices."

The status of fossil fuel and secondary resource in metallurgy industry in China were reviewed, and conversion efficiency of fossil fuel, utilization technologies of secondary energy were studied. Fossil fuel, accounting for over 90% of energy structure in metallurgy industry, took in the highest flight in China, and a great deal of which was converted to secondary energy through the equipment of blast furnace and coke oven. These secondary energy which were mostly made of blast furnace gas(BFG), coke oven gas(COG) and Lindz Donawitz gas(LDG) occupied about 30% of total secondary energy. The way enhancing fossil fuel conversion efficiency, secondary resource recovery and the secondary energy such as BFG, COG, LDG utilization promoted to save fossil fuel was discussed in this paper. And efficient use of lower caloric value fuel was studied, such as preheating combustion air and fuel, generating electricity power etc. and regeneration purposes of high-caloric fuel was also researched, for producing hydrogen, methanol or direct reduction iron etc. The using model of secondary energy at iron and steel works was presented as fuel and chemical materials. The results suggest that utilization of these energy efficiently and reasonably could help to energy saving and environment protecting.

The effect of the acid anion on chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) leaching has been examined, under care-fully controlled conditions, in a range of acids in stirred reactors and columns at pH 1. Solution speciation calculations were performed to determine possible rate controlling species. The relative leach rates of Cu from chalcopyrite can be explained quantitatively entirely on the basis of solution speciation without the need to invoke any rational relating to surface structure/speciation. The rate of Cu release is first order with respect to Fe3+ activity. The stirred batch reactor experiments at fixed pH 1, Eh of 750 mV (SHE) and 75? showed that chalcopyrite leach rates were rapid in both HClO4 and H2SO4 with 100 % Cu recovery after 73h and 97 h respectively. However, the leach rate in H2SO4 was slower as compared to the HClO4 leach due to a slower increase in the activity of Fe3+ due to the formation of FeSO4-. The presence of Cl- in the leaches (HCl and H2SO4 with NaCl added) led to a low activity of Fe3+, due to the high activity of FeCl2+, resulting in very low leach rates. For the column leach experiments dissolution of Fe and Cu from the pH 1 HCl eluted chalcopy-rite column with quartz proceeded at several times the rate of any other column (chalcopyrite with and without quartz and/or pyrite leached with H2SO4, HClO4, HCl). Three observations indicate that galvanic interactions are not leach rate controlling role: a) The rate of leaching was not uniformly increased for the non-quartz containing columns where the two sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite and pyrite, are in physical contact as compared to the analogous quartz containing columns where they are not; b) there exists a reasonable correlation between the rate of Cu release and the effluent Fe3+ activity for all columns thus indicating that the leach rate is determined by solution speciation; and c) in all cases the proportion of Fe to Cu leached indicates preferential dissolution of Cu over Fe. However, the proportion of Fe to Cu is either the same or greater than expected on the basis of the single mineral columns. This indicates that chalcopyrite is not dissolving preferentially to pyrite.

"A mechanistic model for tumbling mills was developed during PhD studies at the JKMRC. The concept was presented at the IMPC of 2014, followed by progress in a sub-process of the model presented at the IMPC of 2016. Additionally, a number of papers on the sub-models and breakage function have been published. This paper provides a consolidated summary of the outcomes and status of the model. The overall model structure is presented along with the sub-models such as appearance functions, breakage rate functions, energy distribution, transport, and multicomponent grinding interaction model. The strengths and capabilities of the model structure as achieved to date are presented. The gaps in knowledge and sub-processes are also presented, providing a guide to the areas that require further research and development. It is proposed that the approach developed in this paper provides a structure that can accommodate future mechanistic, dynamic mill model evolution that can incorporate the latest research outcomes and provide a platform to test modelling improvements. This can assist in substantially improving the predictive mill modelling capability in the industry, the importance of which should not be underestimated for this workhorse of mineral processing.INTRODUCTION Grinding is almost the largest single energy-consuming process in the mineral processing industry, which was estimated that about 0.2% of global, and 1.3% of Australia’s electricity is consumed by comminution of gold and copper ores (Ballantyne and Powell, 2014). "Gold solubilised during cyanidation can be recovered by precipitation (Merrill-Crow process) or by adsorption onto activated carbon, these being the techniques applied in industrial plants.Precious metals (Au, Ag) adsorbed onto activated carbon are extracted during a subsequent stage in aqueous phase, by various technologies, such as hot elution (70-80°C) or under pression desorption (100-130°), with hydro-alcoholic solutions.This stage is of great interest from an economic point of view, due to the high energy costs. Temperature represents the critical kinetic factor.The aim of this paper was to study the influence of different water/organic solvent mixtures (isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and ethylene glycol) on the desorption process.The experimental work was carried out on laboratory scale, using activated coconut carbon with different temperatures and extraction times, without adding cyanide.Best results have been obtained in this order: isopropyl alcohol > ethylene glycol > ethanol. Starting from gold concentration of about 5 g Au per kg of carbon, best kinetics resulted in 97-100% of gold extraction, after 8 hours of desorption, at a temperature of 80ºC."
