China is a country with abundant resources of tungsten, taking one of the world?s top-positions regarding both the total reserve and the amount of industrial production. China?s tungsten resources occur mostly in multi-metallic deposits rather than in single-metallic deposits. China?s multi-metallic tungsten ores have the characteristics of coexistence with other valuable components such as molybdenum, bismuth, copper, sulfur and fluorite. These ores are usually low in grade and difficult to process. The technological challenge in mineral processing lies in separation of multi-metallic components in these complex ores and a comprehensive utilization of natural resource. Several cases of industrial practice of processing China?s typical multi-metallic tungsten ores are presented.

Phosphate minerals are conventionally concentrated by flotation process using soap or soap- light diesel oil emulsion as collector. Some plants use detergents such as sodium petroleum sulfonate or alfa olefin sulfonate to enhance efficiency of soap flotation. It is reported that urea a known hydrotrope enhances flotation efficiency of soap as efficiently as alfa olefin sulfonate or linear alkyl benzene sulfonate at bench scale tests. In the present study tri sodium citrate also a known hydrotrope is tested as promoter in the flotation of phosphate mineral from Eshidiya ore.

The accumulation of thorium and/or uranium by various microorganisms from a solution containing thorium and/or uranium at pH 3.5 was examined. Among the species tested, a high accumulation ability for thorium was exhibited by strains of gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus megaterium, B. subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, Rhodococcus erythropolis, and actinomycetes, such as Streptomyces levoris. On the other hand, though uranium was accumulated in small amounts from the solution containing both elements by all these microorganisms, actinomycetes, such as S. flavoviridis and S. levoris had relatively high uranium accumulation abilities. In these high performance thorium- and uranium- accumulating microorganisms, S.levoris, which accumulated the largest amount of uranium from the solution containing only uranium at pH 3.5, could accumulate about 300 µmol thorium and 133 µmol uranium per gram dry wt. of microbial cells from a solution containing both thorium and uranium at pH 3.5. After this screening, uranium accumulation using microorganisms isolated from uranium mines, among which some strains of bacteria were found to possess an extremely high uranium accumulating ability. The microbial biomass may thus be considered for use as an accumulating agent for the removal and recovery of uranium that may be present in metallurgical effluents, mine tailings, seawater and other sources. Recently, hundreds of micro-organisms existing in uranium deposits located in North America, Australia, and Japan for their ability to accumulate large amounts of uranium, and found some new strains which accumulated large amounts of uranium, such as Lactobacillus and Bacillus sp. from Japanese and Arthrobacter and Bacillus sp. from the United States uranium deposits. These bacterial strains can accumulate about 2500 µmol uranium per gram dry wt. of microbial cells within one hour. These microbial cells can remove uranium from the uranium refining wastewater with a high efficiency. The accumulation of uranium from a solution (pH 5.8) by microorganisms contained Arthrobacter nicotianee, which is a similar strain mentioned above Arthrobacter sp., was examined. Among the 76 strains of 69 species tested (23 bacteria, 20 actinomycetes, 18 fungi, and 15 yeasts), high uranium accumulation ability was exhibited by strains of the bacteria, A. nicotianae, B. subtilis, and M. luteus. A. nicotianae cells, which showed the best performance, could accumulate about 698 mg uranium (2.58 mmol) per gram dry wt. of microbial cells.

Because of the extremely low utilization of strain energy in the breakage of solid particles, the energy efficiency prevalent in comminution technology is extremely poor. Schoenert considered that single-particle comminution under slow compression is the most energy-efficient mode of comminution and that energy efficiency should be compared to that. The usual method for grinding minerals and cement has been the ball mill, in which the hit-and-miss aspect of loose-bed comminution severely reduces energy efficiency. The fine grinding of minerals is a particularly energy-intensive process. Schoenert showed that the energy consumed in the comminution of particles in confined beds is second only to that of single-particle comminution under slow compression and developed the method of conducting particle-bed comminution continuously in a high-pressure roll mill. Since its first industrial installation in 1985, the high-pressure roll mill has established itself as the comminution device of choice for significantly improving the productivity and energy efficiency of size reduction from coarse size feeds down to products finer than 20 microns. The first of several hundred installations were in cement plants. The preliminary design and optimization of the industrial operation of high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) systems, owing to the continuous nature of the device, cannot be efficiently done through laboratory experiments and needs to be achieved through proper system modeling. While the energetics of size reduction in high-pressure grinding rolls has been modeled very well, no model exists for the macroscopic variables in HPGR comminution. In high-pressure roll mill grinding, size reduction results from confined particle-bed comminution under compressive stresses such that the daughter particles produced are highly fractured, stressed, or otherwise weakened. This paper attempts to relate the comminution / compaction behavior for confined particle-bed under compression in a piston-die press with the macroscopic variables in HPGR comminution. A model describing the pressure-densification relationship is presented and used to accurately simulate the macroscopic variables in high-pressure grinding rolls, utilizing experimental data for particle-bed comminution with the piston-die press. The accuracy of the predictive simulations strongly suggests that, starting with a few batch-mode laboratory-scale experiments, it should be possible not only to identify the optimal operating conditions for existing operations but also to successfully design new industrial high- pressure grinding roll systems.

"Wetting theory is one of the basic theories of flotation. The effects of concentrations, carbon chain length and pH values of saturated fatty acid collectors (lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid) on the surface wettability of collophanite and dolomite were investigated by measuring the contact angle with dynamic captive-bubble technique and calculating adhesion work of bubble-mineral. The results show that the contact angles both of collophanite and dolomite are higher with enhancement of hydrophobicity when pH value of 5~9. The contact angles both of collophanite and dolomite are reduced with improvement of surface hydrophilicity. When strong acid pH value of 2~4 or strong alkaline pH value of 10~13. The reasons for this are that the fatty acids mainly exist with insoluble RCOOH molecules in strong acid condition, and competitive adsorption of OH- and RCOO- in the mineral surface is formed in strong alkaline condition. With the increase of the collector concentration, the contact angles of the collophanite and the dolomite all first increase then decrease. The formation of hydrophilic micelles results in the decreasing of contact angles and enhancement of surface hydrophilicity opposite when the collector concentration exceeds CMC. The contact angles of the collophanite and dolomite and the WSG of the bubble adhesion increase, the hydrophobicity enhance with the increasing of carbon chains of saturated fatty acid from 12 to 18. The variation tendency for the adsorption quantity of collectors and floatability of collophanite and dolomite are in line with the change trend of contact angle basically. It shows that the wettability of solid-liquid-gas interface can be well characterized by the dynamic captive-bubble technique.INTRODUCTIONPhosphorite resources are the main raw material for producing phosphate fertilizer and producing phosphoric acid (Cao et al.,2005), which is an important strategic mineral resource. The useful minerals in calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore are collophanite, and the main gangue minerals are dolomite (SISH et al.,2003). The lattice ions of the phosphorite and dolomite are both Ca2+, their similar surface properties and similar floatability are the main reason for the flotation of calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore difficultly (Fang et al.,2011). Usually, fatty acid collectors are used for the flotation of calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore under acidic conditions by reversing flotation method to remove dolomite (ABOUZEID et al.,2009), or direct flotation is used to gather collophanite in the alkaline conditions (Gong et al.,2017). The flotation behavior of collophanite and dolomite affects the indexes of concentrate and flotation efficiency directly. Therefore, it is necessary to study the action mechanism and the flotation method of the collector with the phosphate rock and dolomite respectively (Moudgil et al.,1988; Hanna, et al.,1990)."

"In mining and minerals industry, except profitability, there are some crucial factors that represent components in economic machinery of a mine and related activities. These are sustainability and minimizing environmental impact factor. Environmental concerns combined with the water and energy availability and related costs, as well as public license to operate all contrive to demand for more efforts targeting sustainability. Mining industry is highly energy-intensive (estimated to consume 6-7% of total world’s energy), with varying the energy efficiency across the industry resulting in significant costs. Size reduction is the main energy consumer contributing to almost 50% of the total energy used in mining. That means efforts must be made to introduce energy efficient comminution flow-sheets and machineries for sustainable development. Since the crushers are more energy efficient than mills, it is logic to push down-sizing in crushing stage(s) as far as technically possible. That has been strategy for Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology in supplying advanced and effective crushers to provide fine crushed product for subsequent milling stage. Lowering the energy consumption and related costs as well as increasing throughput have been the main objectives in design and development of comminution circuits and related machineries. Inefficiency in comminution technology, particularly in grinding, has long been regarded as a major area for investigation and development, especially when production of fines and ultra-fines are considered. In an attempt to explore the potential of fine crushing and its effects on subsequent milling process the fine crushing performance of Sandvik’s conventional cone crusher and Vertical Shaft Impactor (VSI) in pilot scale to define the energy consumption and circulating load in fine crushing. Tests were conducted to obtain fine crushed products at P = 2 mm in a close circuit. Furthermore, the crushed products were characterized and compared by grind-ability, morphology, and surface area measurement tests. Finally, the energy consumption to grind the crushed products to specific grind size was calculated."

Semi-industrial test on fine products of Meishan dressing plant was carried out with type RP80/25 high pressure roller mill produced by Homburg Corporation of Germany, and the influences of such factors as energy consumption, water containing, throughput and circulating load on rolling effect were investigated. Closed circuit experiment result showed that Meishan iron ore could be suitable for powder grinding with high pressure roller mill, and energy consumption of the operation was declined by 25%~30%, which was favorable for energy-saving, increasing production efficiency and improving grinding effects. According to above experimental results, this paper put forward the technical proposal of application of high pressure roller mill in Meishan, and pointed out some technical problems which needed to be settled urgently in technology disposal.

A complex rare metal ore, containing various valuable elements is used in this study. The mineralogy results indicate that the mineral composition of the raw ore is complex, and there are more than thirty-eight kinds of minerals in the raw ore, and the elements, such as Nb, Ti, Fe, REO, Be etc, always form isomorphism relationship. The REO content of the raw ore is 0.45%, and the contents of other rare metals Nb, Ta, Ti and Zr are 0.33%, 0.02%, 0.93% and 2.00% respectively, and the main gangue elements are Si and Al, and their contents are 71.84% and 8.5% respectively. The beneficiation-metallurgy combination process of ?preconcentration-reduction and magnetic separation-acidification and leaching-precipitation? is used to treat the raw ore. The preconcentration of raw ore is realized through high intensity magnetic separation, and the magnetic field intensity is 1.0T, and the rough concentrate with 2.88% REO and 1.95% Nbresidue can be obtained, and the iron recovery is 92.83%, and the REO recovery is 95.87%, and the Nbresidue is treated by hydrometallurgy process of ?acidification-leaching-precipitation?, then the rare earth oxide, niobium concentrate and zircon-bearing residue can be obtained, and the REO recovery is 80.10% and the Nbresidue and the gangue obtained from the high intensity magnetic separation process is separated by gravity separation, and then the zirconium concentrate can be obtained. The indexes of the beneficiation-metallurgy combination process used to treat the complex rare metal ore are as follows. The REO content of the rare earth oxide is 92.58% and the recovery is 58.44%. The Nb2O5 and 27.42% TFe can be obtained. Iron in rough concentrates is removed after reduction and low intensity magnetic separation, then the iron powder with Fe content over 88% and nonmagnetic rare-metal 2O5 recovery is 94.77%. The rare-metal 2O5 recovery is 80.04%. The mixture of the zircon-bearing 2O5 content of niobium concentrate is 28.34% and the recovery is 54.02%. The ZrO2 content of zirconium concentrate is 28.43% and the recovery is 52.35%. The TFe of iron powder is 89.53% and the recovery is 78.13%. The flotation circuit and the reagents of the all-sliming flotation about low grade and hard operation on zinc oxide ore are researched in the paper. The results indicated that there are many types of zinc minerals in this ore, and the composition is very complex. They include hemimorphite, smithsonite, hydrozincite and so on. The ore is seriously sliming. In light of the ore properties, three kinds of flowsheets have tested. They are gravity concentration (cleaning tables), flotation, combined process of gravity concentration and flotation. The test showed that the recovery of zinc is only 17.08% in the gravity separation. In combined process of gravity separation and flotation, the recovery of zinc concentrate is close to 70%. But the flow-sheet is complex and hard to control in the production. The floatation circuit is feasible. In the test, it pay attention to investigate the new combined reagent which is used in selective all?sliming flotation process. The effects of slime are eliminated by the multi-loop treatment of middling. In flotation, the final recovery of concentrate is 88.76%; the grade is 29.50%. The recovery of physical ore is 93%; and the recovery of -10mm fraction is more than 65%.

The paper presented the acnalysis of field intensity of rare-earth permanent magnet with high BH product and the research of magnet configuration with narrow pole pitch on open magnet surface, both using ANSYS. The possibility to separate micro-disseminated feebly magnetic minerals by improving the field intensity and the capture line distribution rate on open magnet surface were verified. The research on the method to pile up magnets to increase peak value of field intensity on the open magnet to 1.0T was done through correlation analysis between shape and dimensions of magnetic material and field intensity. And the research on technology method to improve capture line distribution rate in the separating field to 1.25×105/m2 was done through optimization design of magnet configuration of the open magnet with narrow pole pitch. Laboratory tests were performed with hematite sample from ore dressing plant such as Hainan mine, Qidong iron ore, etc. The separation results acquired were at the same level as using the electromagnetic separator, verifying the possibility to separate micro-disseminated feebly magnetic minerals with open magnet. The research suggested a new idea about the development of magnetic separator with high efficiency and low costs to separate feebly magnetic minerals and non-magnetic gangues.

"Russia is among the nations holding the world's largest lithium ore reserves. Lithium is of key importance for the global economy. Therefore, it is important to review the current state of technology research aimed at finding the most effective solutions for the recovery of lithium from promising reserves in Russia. In Russia, a number of process solutions for the flotation of spodumene into salable concentrate (5% Li2O) have been implemented at the earlier existing complex low-grade ore concentration project. By applying these solutions, a sample of high-grade spodumene ore (4.7% Li2O) of the Greenbushes deposit was processed into a spodumene concentrate (7.5% Li2O) at a high recovery (~93%) of lithium. In Australia and Canada, new processes have been developed for the recovery of high-grade spodumene concentrates from high-grade ores using dense medium separation and flotation. For the recovery of mica lithium concentrates from low-grade ore, a flotation process was developed in Russia using the cationic collector ANP-2 and Oxifos-B as an additional collector. Low-grade ore containing 0.14% of lithium oxide was processed into a 2.7% Li2O concentrate. New hydrometallurgical lithium concentrate and ore processes are developed to avoid high-temperature (>1000 °C) roasting. The Sileach process (Australia) includes leaching of lithium ore with sulfuric acid in the presence of a halogen-containing component at a temperature of 95-115 °C. In the Russian process, lithium is recovered into an alkaline solution from low-grade spodumene ore in a pressure alkaline leaching environment (250 °C, NaOH concentration > 300 g/l). The developed concentration and hydrometallurgical methods will allow to design on their basis efficient processes for recovering salable products for hi-tech industries from lithium ores.INTRODUCTION Lithium has many unique and important properties. It is the least dense hard metal. Its alloys have some of the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Lithium has the lowest melting point of all known solid elements and is used as a highly-effective heat transfer medium. The high demand for lithium is due primarily to its unique electrochemical potential and low thermal expansion coefficient. It is used in the production of glass and ceramics, in petrochemicals, metals, medical and other industries. Since the late 20th century, the electronics industry has been the largest consumer of lithium. In recent years, lithium has attracted much attention also as an important component of ultra-lightweight electronic devices. It is also the preferred metal for electric batteries used in mobile electronic devices, vehicles, household power generators, making it an important resource for the development of environmentally friendly technology. Leading automotive brands have ambitious plans for the production of electric cars — Tesla Motors, VW, Toyota, GM, BYD Auto. It is expected that the production of electric vehicles alone will triple the demand for lithium by 2025. A sharp increase in the production of lithium is expected. "In this paper, scheelite and scheelite coated with Pb2+ (SC) were synthesized by chemical precipitation with the help of ultrasonic. The role of the Pb2+ on scheelite was evaluated. Additionally, the dissolution behavior of minerals and the adsorption mechanism of collectors were investigated systematically via SEM, XRD, EDS. The results indicate that the ultrasonic cavitation can promote the formation of scheelite with large particle size and high crystallinity. Due to the exchange of WO4 2- and OH-, the dissolution of scheelite are not in a 1:1 equivalent amount by chemical formula and the concentration of WO4 2- is higher than that of Ca2+ in the solution because Pb2+ promotes the transfer of WO4 2- from scheelite surface into the solution. The dissolution of scheelite is an endothermic reaction and its enthalpy reaches the maximum value of 692.59J·mol-1 at pH=8~10. But the coating of Pb2+ changes the thermal effect of scheelite in the solution and the dissolution of SC is an exothermic reaction with the dissolution enthalpy of -262.30 J·mol-1. At pH=8~10, the adsorption capacity of sodium oleate and salicylhydroxamic acid on the surface of SC is higher than that of scheelite which delivers that Pb2+ contributes to the scheelite surface dissolution and enhances the adsorption of collectors on the mineral surface, thus achieving activation.INTRODUCTIONIn modern society, tungsten is a type of quite important rare metal and also a strategic resource. Because of its low vapor pressure, high melting point, good electrical and thermal conductivity properties, it is widely applied in high-temperature technology, lighting, machine and engine construction (Zhao,Z.W, 2013; Yan, W, 2017; Ilhan, S, 2013). Both scheelite and wolframite are the major tungsten deposits. With the depletion of easily-processed wolframite, scheelite has drawn a great deal of scientific and industrial attention. Scheelite can be recovered by flotation due to the metathesis of polarity and chargeability on minerals surface via adding regulators and collectors."

Considering the subtractive trend of the sulfide and high-grade zinc ores in worldwide and also in Iran, Nowadays special attentions have been drawn to the extraction of zinc from its other resources such as low-grade oxide ores and secondary resources. Oxide ore of the eastern part of Mehdi-abad lead and zinc mine is silicate and has an average grade of 7% (with cut off grade of 4%). Main mineral of the Mehdi-abad ore is Hemimorphite and this mineral is associated with Goethite, Hematite, Ferrous Dolomite, and Manganese oxide mineral so that oxides of Iron, manganese and silica include almost 50% of the total ore. In this paper, the results obtained from the leaching kinetic study of the low-grade zinc oxide ore using Sulfuric acid are presented. The effects of particle size, reaction temperature, acid concentration, and solid percent on the dissolution rate have been investigated. The results obtained from the Taghochi approach showed that the zinc recovery is about 78% under the following optimized conditions: particle size: 106µm, leaching time: one hour, temperature: 45°C, acid concentration: 15% and solid percent: 15%. Kinetics study was revealed that zinc minerals leaching controlled by diffusion rate through the product layer during leaching time with the activation energy of 5 KJ/mol and compliance with the 1- (2/3. x) ? The development of surface charge of serpentine mineral and implications for sulphide ?otation have been studied through flotation tests, sedimentation tests, zeta potential measurements and optical microscope photos. The results show that the serpentine mineral was positively charged at an extensive pH range, with an isoelectric point (IEP) of 11.9. The magnitude and sign of the pyrite particles were pH dependent and were negative for pH values above 2. At pH value 9, where ?otation of nickel sul?de ores is routinely performed, serpentine and pyrite particles attract through an electrostatic mechanism. Slime coatings of serpentine adhere to the surface of pyrite, reducing pyrite flotation recovery. The removal of magnesium ions from the serpentine surface by acid leaching results in a decrease of serpentine IEP and eliminates the adverse effect of serpentine on pyrite flotation. Therefore, it has been clearly established that the surface charge value developed in the serpentine/aqueous electrical interface is a function of the serpentine surface incongruently dissolution. As a result of hydroxyl dissolution, the magnesium ions are left in serpentine surface, which is responsible for serpentine surface charge. The methods, which can remove magnesium ions from serpentine surface, can be used to eliminate the adverse effect of serpentine on pyrite flotation.

The key problems of current flowsheets and equipments are analyzed. A new steel slag's crushing flowsheet whose key equipments are the improved inertia cone crusher and inertia vibrating jaw crusher is proposed. An advanced two stage open-circuit crushing method is adopted in the flowsheet, with 90% of particle size crushing under 6mm. Using inertia vibrating technology and selective crushing principle the crushers can realize steel slag separating fully into steel and slag and with flexible transmission mechanism the crusher can be protected when iron lump is passing. The flowsheets can enhance the recovery of metal greatly, and expand the application range of tail slag and added value.

Physical principles of two-phase flows with a polyfractional solid phase have not received a sufficient theoretical interpretation as yet. Two-phase flows in the separation mode with a counter-flow of particles are even more complicated. Only statistical methods give an insight into general regularities of such processes. These processes can be interpreted best by analogy with the statistical model of an ideal gas developed by L. Boltzmann, although here a number of difficulties arise. The notion of a statistical system for such flows is substantiated. A mathematical estimation of a statistical system is presented. New notions are introduced, namely, potential extraction of a system and lifting factor. A relationship having the physical meaning of entropy is derived for a two-phase flow in the separation modes. The connection of this new entropy with flow parameters, such as the number of particles, separation factor and chaotizing factor, is established. Properties of this entropy are analyzed, as well as the analogy and difference between this entropy and Boltzmann?s entropy. The notion is formulated and the definition of the chaotizing factor of a process is suggested. In the framework of a statistical approach to two-phase flows in the separation mode, the notion of flow mobility has been formulated. Principal regularities of mass transfer in zone/apparatus sys-tem are analyzed. Principal ideas of a cellular model of the process are formulated, and main relationships for its description are derived. Proceeding from the cellular model, a dependence describing the degree of fractional separation of a narrow size grade is found. The analysis of this dependence makes it possible to reveal the crucial role of the Froude criterion for gravitational separation processes. It is found empirically that this parameter is a basis for the affinization of separation curves (Barsky E, Barsky M, 2006; Barsky, 1980).

In composite washeries optimization of operating parameters to achieve maximum clean coal yield at the desired clean coal ash level is a major problem. This problem is more acute in countries like India, which have predominant reserves of difficult-to-wash coals. The constrained operational parameters of washing for some equipments make it more severe. In addition to this, the dependence of separating performance of different equipments upon various variables aggravates the situation. Here an attempt is made to find a numerical solution to get maximum yield and minimize the difference between the actual and the theoretical yield. The solution is arrived through constrained non-linear optimization of a multivariable objective function that utilizes spreadsheet tools; the method accommodates any number of source coals or washing size fractions. By using a designed Ep value the predicted yield of composite clean coal has been calculated and the yield is optimized subject to constraints on both the ash and specific gravity. It is shown that operational constraints of different washeries in the composite plant that utilizes gravity separation methods can also be over-come. The technique offers the coal preparation engineer an effective and straightforward method for determining the optimum cut-points of separation for different coals or blended coals to obtain maximum product yield at a specified level of ash content.

"Raw materials are among the main building blocks of a growing economy. Without raw materials, no matter whether it is primary or secondary, production is not possible. Products with high added value require special materials. Recently, worldwide production of some important raw materials mainly comes from a handful of countries, for example: China (Rare Earths Elements (REE)), Russia, South Africa (Platinum Group Elements (PGE)), Democratic Republic of Congo (Cobalt), etc. In the EU as well as in Hungary, the importance of the so called 14 critical raw materials has been recognized. Within the frame of the TÁMOP-4.2.2.A-11/1/KONV-2012-0005 - CriticEL project, the Institute of Raw Materials Preparation and Environmental Processing in cooperation with the Institute of Mineralogy and Geology of the University of Miskolc are working on the exploration of the primary and secondary sources and developing innovative preparation technologies of critical raw materials in Hungary. The research work showed in this article, focused on the recovery of critical materials from LCD TVs and monitors. There are high deviations in different literatures regarding to concentrations of critical elements in displays (e.g.: indium), probably because of the differences in production year, producers and recovery technologies. During the research - described in this study - a well specified sample of quite large amount of displays had been used. The exact place and shape of the ITO (indium-tin oxide) layer were determined by SEM analysis. The applied preparation technology was developed based on the results of our investigations and by technologies found in the literature. The developed process accomplishes two main parts: the mechanical preparation (mainly the liberation of different display layers, removal of liquid crystal) and the acidic dissolution of indium."

With implementation of stringent environmental regulations, ultra clean coal technology development programs have gained significant importance worldwide. As far as Indian scenario is concerned, most of the coals present in India are of drift origin and low grade, containing high mineral matter varying from 15% to greater than 50%. The inorganic or ash constituents of Indian coals are finely disseminated through the organic or carbonaceous constituents so, that commonly used physical beneficiation techniques are of only limited value in affecting separation. Chemical processes involve addition of chemicals, which react with the mineral matter and allow its easy removal. The present study envisages the effect of aqueous alkali leaching followed by acid washing on the removal of mineral matter from two different captive coals of Tata Steel at elevated temperature and pressure. The experiments are conducted at desired conditions using a bench scale pressure reactor set up having proper data acquisition and control system. The research study revealed, that it is possible to reduce the ash content up to 70% by this method. The alkali content of the product clean coal does not increase whereas the silica and alumina content reduces by nearly 58% and 62% respectively. Significant reduction in the phosphorus content is observed after the acid treatment. The crucible swelling number of the feed coal improves after the treatment. The mechanism of demineralisation was evaluated by analyzing the coal samples before and after the alkali and acid treatment using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Because of the acidic nature of the silicates and aluminates, they dissolve into the NaOH solution and form sodalite. Sodalite is partially soluble in the alkali solution. The hydrates formed during alkali treatment are partially removed due to acid wash. This study in overall provides an insight into possible alternative methods of beneficiation for removal of ash from high ash Indian coals.

The purpose of the separation processes in coal processing is obtaining products of certain ash contents. In the most of cases it is assumed that the separation process is described by one, selected parameter, which usually is grain size or material density. The separation may be described by means of statistical distributions of random variables, what allows forecasting the separation results of certain enrichment method. There are very well known the applications of approximations of Tromp separation curves or distribution functions of Erasmus, Meloy or Weibull. It is necessary to say that if the fitness of the approximation more suitable, then the characteristics of the process itself is also better. In purpose of obtaining more appropriate results, these methods were modified by application the mathematical functions, as i.e. hyperbolic tangens function. Furthermore, on the basis of empirical data, so-called interpolations may be performed in purpose of getting more appropriate results of approximation. One of the most known techniques of interpolation is Hughes method. This method for interpolating standard data involves breaking down each interval into a number of smaller sub-intervals. The results of such one-dimensional approach not always contain the full in-formation of the searched distribution. It happens because such interpretation of the problem is not completely correct. In practice, the separation process depends not only on the one parameter (i.e. grain size), but also on many other features characterizing certain material (i.e. its density). It seems then that in some cases the application of multidimensional grain characteristics distributions will be more appropriate. In this paper, the technique of joining the distributions of grain size and density by means of so-called Morgenstern distributions is shown. The general form of these distributions is as following:
