In the past marine mining technology has focused on bulk mining of base metals from polymetallic massive sulfides. This has not been very successful because of the relatively low unit value of these metals and other reasons such as water depth, etc.. The process of gold enrichment in hydrothermal deposits is controlled through five different factors: (1) nature and source of the solution, (2) source of the gold, (3) a mechanism for mobilizing and transporting, (4) a mechanism for deposition, and (5) a mechanism to preserve the deposit. Gold has been identified in marine polymetallic massive sulfides from various locations on the ocean floor (e.g., spreading centers, seamounts) with contents ranging up to 5 ppm Au. This is within the current range of 1.0 to 7.0 ppm gold content which classifies gold ores. The gold appears to have been derived during hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust. Until the present there has been little attention to the possibility of mining gold or other precious metals in the marine environment. However, the magnitude of hydrothermal alteration (seawater can penetrates to a depth of 5 km into the oceanic crust) and primary gold contents of the rocks in the pathway of the fluid indicates that major gold deposits must have formed on or in the ocean floor, but they have not been found. To find a big deposit might only take an exploration model exclusively designed for gold exploration on the ocean floor.

The release by the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the leasing of polymetallic sulfide minerals on the Gorda Ridge in December 1983 resulted in strong negative public reactions. The fundamental issues affecting federal-state relations included the amount of state involvement in the planning process and the continuing question of consistency (sensu Coastal Zone Management Act). The specific issues raised included the authority of DOI to lease nonenergy minerals offshore, the economic and strategic rationale for the proposed lease, and the adequacy of the DEIS. The questions of DEIS adequacy arose in three major areas: the lack of evidence for the existence of polymetallic sulfides on the Gorda Ridge, the lack of sufficient baseline data, and the lack of a mining scenario from which to assess potential impacts. The joint Federal-State Technical Task Force was formed in February, 1984 as part of an initial agreement between the State of Oregon and the Department of the Interior to work cooperatively. Other points in the agreement were (1) a reduction of any future proposed lease area from 40 million acres to no more than 4 million acres; (2) indefinite postponement of the lease sale; (3) deletion of the nearshore portion of the possible lease area covering the physical continental shelf and slope; (4) a commitment of a "tiered" EIS process; and (5) sharing of non-proprietary data with the public.

The Chilean part of the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, situated south of latitude 62o S, is within that country?s Región de Magallanes y Antártica, and separated from the remainder of Chile by the Magellan Strait. In recent geological history several phases of Quaternary age glaciers originating in the Andean and Dawinian Cordilleras eroded assumed primary gold deposits and entrained their related alluvial deposits. Piedmont glaciation extended to the east and south over m0st of the land and beyond the present-day coastline into extensive areas exposed during the resulting lowered relative sea level. During interglacials particulate gold incorporated unevenly in the widespread drift, till and moraines was fluvially released and concentrated into streams and flood gravels. Coastal erosion enriched various beaches with gold. From 1868 onwards Tierra del Fuego hosted a major gold rush whereby early, labour intensive, beach mining eventually developed into inland dredging. But continued mining activity was interrupted and then terminated by several external factors. Most miners, always seeking ?greener pastures?, joined the rush to the new discoveries in the Klondike (1896) and Nome, Alaska (1899). In 1904 the international boundary, established in 1881, became the subject of a major dispute not settled until 1984, The Panama canal?s opening in 1914 turned Tierra del Fuego, previously on the Pacific-Atlantic shipping route, into a remote backwater. World War II brought opposing foreign naval forces to the actual islands where most gold had been taken from the beaches. It also crippled the dredging industry which lost its coal supply and never recovered. Nevertheless, some small scale mining continues to this day.

Recent advances in coring technology and in the development of shipboard and/or in situ geochemical geochemical analysis systems have greatly improved our ability to collect and analyze exploration samples, particularly for marine placer exploration programs. The potential benefit of these improvements cannot be fully realized, however, until we also develop more efficient methods of data reduction and interpretation. Specifically, there is a need to provide prospectors with rapid and useful interpretations of the raw geochemical data so that they can exploit promising results and otherwise optimize the exploration program while the exploration vessel is still at sea. The goal of this project has been to identify and/or develop computer software which is capable of making the necessary data reduction calculations and which can be run on conventional desk-top computers. All work on this project has been supported through a research grant from MMTC-CSD to The University of Michigan. The first stage of this effort involved an evaluation of commercially available (i.e., "off the shelf") software to determine its suitability for use in marine placer exploration applications. Various commercial software packages, each purportedly capable of making different types of statistical and/or mathematical calculations, were tested by evaluating their performance in handling geochemical data sets representative of actual marine placer locations. These data sets include the positions and results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected marine placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. The long-term economics of each of the four principal metals in marine manganese nodules (copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese) was evaluated to determine the anticipated viability of a nodule mining venture based on existing studies of the potential profitability of a nodule project. This included assessments of the lifetimes of land-based reserves, and examination and econometric modelling of the economic variables thought to affect nodule metal prices and demand. These analyses demonstrated that a) land-based reserves of the nodule metals were likely to last well into the future (100 400 years); b) average nodule metal paces were likely to stay a low levels for the foreseeable future; and c) the expected revenue stream from a twenty- ear nodule mining venture was substantially (42%) below that required to attract the necessary investment capital for such a high risk venture.

"Bimodal lithostratigrafic assemblages are of significance in volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS)-hosted lithology. The largest deposits are either bimodal-siliciclastic or maficsiliciclastic, and the presence of a significant siliciclastic component in the host stratigraphic succession favors large VMS deposits (e.g., Franklin et al., 2005; Barrie and Hannington, 1999). In the case of modern sub-seafloor VMS deposits in arc-related settings, the majority of deposits have been discovered in association with calderas or cauldrons (Halbach et al., 1993; Ishibashi and Urabe, 1995; Iizasa et al., 1999). These features are formed by the explosive eruption of silicic volcanoes, so that silicic host rocks and/or pumiceous volcanic clasts are generally observed around the ore deposits (e.g., Binns and Scott, 1993; Fiske et al., 2001). Caldera-like and graben-like morphological features therefore attract attention in geophysical surveys. However, silicic lithologies (dacite and rhyolite) normally contain only small amount of metallic elements (e.g., a few ppm to a few dozen ppm of Cu), whereas mafic rocks, such as basalts and basaltic andesites, contain significant amounts of metals (e.g., a few hundred ppm of Cu). Thus, the origin of metallic elements in VMS deposits associate with the silicic host rock remains unclear.The Iheya North Knoll is a volcanic complex in the middle of the Okinawa Trough. It is located in a young and actively spreading back-arc basin that extends for 1200 km behind the Ryukyu arc-trench system (Lee et al., 1980; Letouzey and Kimura, 1986). Several active hydrothermal fields have been recognized in the Iheya North Knoll. Mineralization at the Iheya North Knoll is characterized by relatively juvenile features consisting of VMS deposits with associated hydrothermal alterations to various degrees. Massive sphaleriterich sulfides at this site, recovered for the first time from beneath an active seafloor hydrothermal system, strongly resemble the black ore of the Kuroko deposits of the Miocene age in Japan (Takai et al., 2011). From February 11 to March 17, 2016, the SIP CK16-01 (Exp. 908) D/V Chikyu cruise was conducted at Iheya North Knoll and the rifting center of the Iheya Minor Ridge area, middle Okinawa Trough. The Iheya Minor Ridge area is also an active hydrothermal field, located ~30 km southeast of the Iheya North Knoll. In this area, basaltic rocks are widely distributed, and drilling has confirmed that the basaltic materials continue to ~120 m below the seafloor (Kumagai et al., in prep)."

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn). As result of chemical analysis of Mn, Cu, Ni and Co, polymetallic nodules observed in part of the EEZ of Mexico are possible of potential economic interest (Rosales and Carranza, 1990, 2001; Carranza and Rosales, 2003).

The Afanasiy-Nikitin Seamounts (ANS) in Eastern Equatorial Indian Ocean (Figure 1) are shown to be the exposed part of the presently buried 85°E Ridge system under the Bengal Fan sediment and were emplacement around 75-80 m.y. ago (Krishna, 2003). The first recovery of ferromanganese crusts from the ANS was made during 1994, and the samples (Figure 2) provided important clues on the evolution of this seamount (Banakar et al., 1997).

This study presents a model to predict fate of resuspended sediment in the development of deep-sea mineral resources including manganese nodules under Clarion-Clipperton area of the Pacific Ocean. The manganese nodules are expected to be developed near future and major research is undergoing in Korea recently concerning many aspects of the mineral resources development. One aspect is about environmental concern related to the deep-sea development, and a major environmental problem is the resuspended deep-sea sediment. In order to quantitatively analyze the resuspended sediment in the water column during the deep-sea development, particle size distribution (PSD) was considered an important factor in this research. The model developed here includes PSD and coagulation process, as well as sedimentation process. The model is one dimensional in the vertical profile, and was designed to describe the change of particle size distribution in the water column in the given vertical point. Based on the mathematical modeling, a numerical model was developed. Using the model, basic simulation was performed under representative environmental setting of the deep-sea environment. The simulation showed the dynamics of change of particle size distribution for 50 m depth of water column from the deep-sea bed, up to 10 days of simulation time. The simulation results indicate that coagulation seemed an important factor in the fate of resuspended deep-sea sediment. As a result, this research shows that the particle size distribution approach, as well as considering the coagulation process, is needed and may be effectively applied to environmental impact analysis of deep-sea resuspended sediment. India is dependent for 60% of its annual requirement of copper and the entire quantity of nickel and cobalt on imports from outside the country. Land-based resources are either too meager or of too low a concentration for economic exploitation. This has prompted the country to look to deep seabed re- sources for meeting its rising demand for these metals. The Ocean Policy of the Government of India announced in 1982 talks about the need to map and assess the availability of minerals in the deep sea and to develop necessary technologies for exploration and exploitation of seabed minerals. To be self-reliant such technologies would have to be largely developed, tested and operated indigenously. The adoption of the Law of the Sea Convention in 1982 gave a fillip to India's desire to get into the field of deep seabed mining. India applied for recognition as a Pioneer Investor in Ocean Mining in 1983 and received allotment of a mine site of 150,000 km2 in the Central Indian Ocean in August 1987. Simultaneously, the Government has taken up a programme of development of technologies for exploration of the mine site for resource assessment, environmental monitoring also to meet the commitments like relinquishment of 50% of the area to the Preparatory Commission. Technologies for exploitation of these seabed resource like the mining system, transportation and extractive metallurgy have also been taken up for development in various research institutes largely in the government sector. While India's objective in the long term is to meet the shortage of copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese by the turn of the century, in the short term, the programme aims at application of the seabed mining technologies to meet the immediate needs of the country such as: a. Exploration for oil and natural gas. b. Exploration and exploitation of placer minerals and other deposits at shallow depth in India's EEZ.

Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, but no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27°51S / 63°56E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at a water depth of 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. Massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed; these chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground as well as pathways for the fluid circulation.

Much of the aggregate that is being exploited at present from these areas is a ?relic? deposit. It was originally eroded from primary source rocks and transported to a depositional centre by processes that are now either greatly reduced in effectiveness or are largely absent at the present time. Following the retreat of the Devensian ice sheet, the subsequent rise of sealevel and the drowning of large areas of the continental shelf along with the lower reaches of many rivers, a fresh sequence of sediment sources, pathways and sinks now exist. Sediment is being eroded from several, pre-existing source areas and transported along different, well - defined pathways to a number of new depositional sinks. Some of the present, licenced, aggregate dredging areas lie close to these sources, pathways and sinks with the consequent dredging activity being perceived by some as interfering with the ?natural process? that links the offshore and the coastal / littoral zones. With this perception in mind, the principal, sources, pathways and sinks between Flamborough Head and Beachy Head will be highlighted and the relationship of dredging activity upon them, evaluated. It will be demonstrated that offshore dredging activity has no effect upon supplies of sediment to coastal beaches.

The functions of miner mainly include the pick-up manganese nodules laying on the surface of the seafloor, the separation them from sediments, the crushing the nodules and the covey to the inlet of the flexible hose. The miner is connected with umbilical cable that can supply power, instrument signal, communication data, etc. The major concerns of the system is to monitor and control the launching and retrieval operation, the landing, maneuvering and track keeping, to monitor the pick-up operation and to monitor the hydraulic system. Also as per the seafloor profile the track and pick-up processes need to be controlled. The recent research and development of deep sea miner is mainly focused on the efficient performance and workability in deep water. To communicate and control the miner, navigation and positioning system have been applied. As the miner is being deployed or retrieved, it is very critical to avoid any damage to the device that would be caused by the dynamic behavior of surface vessel or the minor itself with wave and current motion. The fast deployment and retrieve should be considered very important to minimize the possible damage. The paper introduces the various type of deployment devices and recommend the possible system to the miner developed by KRISO.

The resources and reserves calculation of marine diamond deposits should be based on a systematic sampling grid. The distribution of the sample grade results tends to be very skew and has a large variance. A bias is easily introduced due to the fact that the grade distribution of the samples is very different from the grades of the area of influence. The temptation is always there to extrapolate the highest grade samples simply to their area of influence. If this is done, the higher grade areas will be systematically overestimated, while the lower grade areas will be underestimated. Such a bias should surely be avoided by weighing the sample grades in such a way with their neighbours, so that the estimated grades have a similar distribution as the grades of the blocks. The grade distribution of small mining blocks tend to be lognormal-like. If the coefficient of variation is known, i.e. the standard deviation divided by the mean, then the grade distribution of the small mining blocks is relatively well-defined. The distribution of the diamonds within the deposits can be simulated, based on the histogram of the sample results and on the semivariogram. The diamonds tend to cluster in trapsites. From the semivariogram and the histogram, the average size and spacing between trapsites, and the grade distribution within the trapsites, can be calculated using the model of the General Family of Discrete Distributions. Using such a simulated deposit, the grade distribution for different block sizes can be obtained. The grade distributions become more lognormal-like with increasing block sizes, as the trapsite effect is reduced.

Meaningful and real time environmental monitoring of marine tailings placement is a clear sign of deeper commitment to the people of PNG in regard to impacts of mining on coastal environment and marine life. Today daily mine wastes and tailings are increasingly being delivered to the seabed offshore of project sites in Misima and Lihir islands. Ramu and Simberi mining projects also plan to dispose tailings out at deep sea. As tailings leave the tailings pipe and come out into the seabed, concentrations of the cations and other potential harmful particles in the tailings stream need to be quantifiably monitored each day during the life of the refinery. For continuous monitoring of the tailing?s true chemical characteristics submarine cables connected with ocean floor observation systems consisting of deep-sea underwater video, and cation sensors and electrodes will be laid. Power transport to the tailings site and data transfer from the tailings site will be via opto-electric cables. Various data center instruments will record and manage the collected data. Observation data will be transferred in real time to stake holder?s data centers via a dedicated line from on-land stations, and then distributed to company offices and government establishments. Japan Marine Science and Technology Center, Telikom PNG, and Australian Institute of Marine Sciences will be the key advisers in this project. The main role of the observatories is to monitor and collect background seabed geochemical data prior to start of tailings disposal, during tailings disposal period, and after the life of the refinery.

Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice-like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the ocean basins. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical combination of high pressure and low temperature (0 - 17 bars, 0 - 25°C), which in turn is dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion, slumping, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level, and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flow, or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. The Indian offshore is promising for the occurrence of gas hydrates in a total of about 80,000 km2 area in the bathymetry range of 700 to 3000 m as reported in earlier surveys. A gas hydrate stability zone thickness map was prepared using bathymetry and sea bottom temperatures along the continental margins of India. This map is expected to provide the depth window while searching for Bottom Simulating Reflectors (BSR). The study indicates that a minimum water depth of 750 m is required for the formation of gas hydrates, above which the chances for gas hydrate occurrence appear minimal despite other favorable conditions like organic-rich sediments, etc. Single-channel seismic analog records (Gupta et al., 1998) indicate that the Western Continental Margin of India (WCMI) offers a greater promise for gas hydrate occurrences, particularly with regard to the number of BSRs traced on the analog records as compared to earlier surveys.

Up to now, much data on marine minerals, as well as on marine geochemistry, have been accumulated. Modem computer databases provide optimum flexibility and power for manipulating these data. The best worldwide marine mineral database is currently the Marine Minerals Bibliography and Geochemical Data Base created by Carla Moore et al. at the National Geophysical Data Center in the United States. In fact, in the course of studying marine minerals and geochemistry we may collect not only digital-character type data but also graph and image (black-white, grey and color image) data types. For instance, correlation diagram between chemical compositions of minerals, spectroscopic graphs, (e.g. infrared spectra, Mossbauer spectra, etc.), grey or color images from both optical and electron micro- scopes (scanning or transmission electron microscopes) as well as seabed photographs. Charles L. Morgan et al. (1993) reported that 10,000 photographs and some video images of the seabed in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific have been collected by the Ocean Minerals Company. If both graphic and analytical information were stored in a database, it would be very useful and convenient to marine geologists. This system would not only be able to search for all the data based on one parameter, but also for both size and composition distributions. If possible, geostatistical methods could be combined with fractal dimensional methods. Of course, this would require enormous efforts. Before multimedia technology emerged, it was very difficult to create image databases. The emergence of large-capacity compact discs, high-speed central processing units, and high-speed digital signal processing techniques makes it possible to establish multimedia database management systems (DBMS), image-text DBMS, that involves graphs, text, images, and sound. In order to store image fields in a DBMS, we have to take into account two problems: (1) image access format and (2) image compression code standard.

Both ferromanganese crusts and nodules present potential processors with enormous volumes of tailings of dubious environmental character: most processing scenarios fail to utilize the uneconomic manganese itself, leaving a total waste volume on the order of 96% of the incoming ore. Each current disposal proposal seems flawed: (1) backhauling to the initial mine site is costly and might run afoul of EPA or UN marine dumping*regulations, (2) subsea disposal near a coastal processing site means almost inevitable community opposition, (3) agricultural soil amendment for improving barren lava or coral rubble appears to require prohibitive amounts of supplementary phosphate, and (4) the slag resulting from an energy intensive pyrometallurgical processing may have potential as road ballast, but few processors will opt for smelting in all but those locales where energy is very cheap. This unfortunately rules out a smelting operation in almost any Pacific Island environment. We envision at least one other scenario which could result in both the removal of tailings from a processing plant and an increase in the supply of useful building materials at little or no cost to either the processing or construction industries--transforming a tenacious waste into a novel resource. Ongoing experiments have demonstrated considerable potential for turning acid leach tailings into dark composite facing stone, fancy black tile, novelty ceramics or concrete aggregate. The Central Indian Ridge (CIR), the boundary between the African and Indian plates, forms a SSE trending mid-oceanic accretionary system in the equatorial Indian Ocean (Fig. 1), extending to the northerly Carlsberg Ridge spreading center, and terminating at the Rodrigues Triple Junction (RTJ; 25°30'S, 70°06'E) by intersection with the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and the Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR). Crustal divergence of the CIR proceeds at intermediate rates; a progressive increase of ocean floor accretion towards the south is documented: the present half spreading rate and ridge trend change from 1.80 cm/a and N142° at the equator to 2.73 cm/a and N152° north of the triple point. The topography of the central rift zone is rather smooth compared to slow spreading analogues such as the SWIR, but slightly more rugged than the SEIR. The rift valley is 500-800 m deep, 10-15 km wide and usually well defined. The inner floor, 2-4 km in width, is relatively flat along the axis and more variable in cross section, and lies at 2700-3200 m depth. Off set fracture zones striking generally N60° . in southern portions of the CIR and laterally displacing median valleys by as much as 8 km are often bent, uplifting crustal sequences up to several hundred meters. The length of individual spreading segments varies between a few and several tens of kilometers. The vertical displacement on normal faults are larger while lineaments are shorter than those of the faster spreading SEIR.
