"1.0 INTRODUCTIONThese Guidelines reflect the state-of-the-practice of the Deep Mixing Method (DMM) in North America. DMM is an in situ mixing process that breaks down the soil structure; injects binders, fillers and reagents into the soil; and blends them with the soil. DMM is also commonly referred to as Soil Mixing. The final properties of the treated soil in situ are a function of the composition of the native soils and groundwater, the binders introduced, the mixing methods and energy, and the conditions and time of curing. Treated soils generally have increased strength and stiffness and/or reduced permeability relative to the native soils.This document addresses DMM performed by rotating single and multiple axis mixing tools, rotating cutter wheels at the end of a rigid kelly bar, or trench mixing using a rotating cutting/mixing chain around the perimeter of a rigid bar. Binder may be injected through low or high energy (velocity) jets.The treated soils created through wet DMM are heterogeneous mixtures of binder, water, soil, and groundwater. Treated soils produced by dry DMM techniques are a mixture of binder, soil, and the water already present in the native soil.DMM applications described in this document include•,Earth retention•,Liquefaction mitigation•,Groundwater seepage control and containment isolation•,Bearing capacity improvement•,Deep foundations•,Mass stabilization and contamination containment•,Embankment, levee and dam strengthening, and stabilization•,Casing replacementThis document was developed to address deep foundations applications. Use of deep mixing for seepage control is not specifically addressed. The reader is referred to documents prepared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for additional information. Shallow soil mixing and the use of DMM for stabilization/solidification of contaminated soils performed at depths less than 10 feet (3 m) are mentioned briefly. "This paper covers the rapid response methods used to monitor the emergency response to damage to an historic structure. An architectural gem, the latest incarnation of the old south Church was completed in 1875, utilizing local conglomerate (pudding stone), combined with brownstone and other materials to make an incredible showcase for priceless stained glass and other details epitomizing the height of the American Industrial Revolution. As part of required American with Disabilities retrofits to the adjacent Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority Station (MBTA), a support of excavation system was implemented with tradition sheet piles. During excavation (SOE) it was determined that Jet Grouting would need to supplement the sheeting to close openings in the SOE. During Jet Grouting, the eastern side of the structure was bisected, and lifted over 2 inches up and to the south. The movement occurred rapidly, within minutes, and subsided when Jet grouting was discontinued. The paper will describe the nature of the immediate response to get a real time monitoring program established, and the follow on monitoring program that ensued to provide the needed information to the stakeholders about this critical structure to evaluate stability, safety and to develop a long term remediation plan. The real time systems and instruments used consisted of Automated Motorized Total Stations (AMTS) and Automated Crackmeters. The Paper will describe the techniques used to control construction in safe manner.INTRODUCTIONThe Old South Church of Boston was constructed in 1875 and is one of the best examples of High Victorian Gothic Architecture in the Northeast. (Fig. 1) shows the newly constructed Old South in 1882. The Roxbury Conglomerate used to construct the church combined with large stained glass window by Clayton and Bell of London provides its unique appearance. Like most of the structures constructed in Boston’s Back Bay at that time, the church is founded on timber piles which penetrate the fill and organic soils to bear in the upper Boston Blue Clay. The churches interior includes high vaulted plaster ceilings and a 1920’s E. M. Skinner organ with exposed pipes as long as 32 ft. in length. The Church was added to the list of National Historic Landmarks in 1970 and is a featured Boston attraction."

With a total of five basement levels, ground floor and a further six levels above grade, construction of the Kö-Galerie building, on the Königsallee, in the centre of Düsseldorf, was completed with all the difficulties which accompany property development today in the inner city. To meet the intermediate and final deadlines, ad­vanced building techniques were used. Notable among them are the top/down method for simultaneous construction upwards and downwards from an intermediate level, and the use of pre-fabricated composite columns in drilled shafts for the main load-bearing foundations as well as diaphragm walls designed as permanent structural wall of the basement.

STATNAMIC load testing augmented with embedded instrumentation has been successfully used to obtain structural and geotechnical design information on large diameter spun cast concrete cylinder piles on many large marine construction projects. The paper focuses on one particularly interesting large marine project involving a new bridge to St. George Island, Florida where instrumentation and STATNAMIC load testing was used in conjunction with static load testing on high capacity piles. The information presented includes embedded instrumentation measurements taken during pile fabrication (post-tensioning), during pile driving, during static load testing, and STATNAMIC load testing. As much of this data is the first of its kind on concrete cylinder piles, it is exciting to present the foundation industry with this additional insight as to the behavior of this pile type and the accuracy of the methods used to test them.

A multiple use storage facility building is being developed in the Philippines on a peninsula that was reclaimed in the 1990s without any soil treatment. The subsoil now consists of loose to medium dense silty sand underlain by a soft to medium stiff clay. A liquefaction assessment by analytical methods have shown that the loose to medium dense silty sand yields a high potential for liquefaction and lateral spreading during pthe design level seismic event. To mitigate the risk of liquefaction and lateral spreading, as well as assure the slope stability of the shoreline, a solution utilizing a combination of ground improvement techniques by means of a Mixed-In-Place (MIPTM) Lattice Grid Wall and Stone Columns was developed and successfully executed. For the detailed seismic design, a Finite Element 3D analysis was undertaken to simulate static and dynamic actions on the buttress wall. The liquefaction assessment and settlement calculation were carried out based on analytical design approaches. For the execution of the Lattice Grid Wall, the Mixed-In-Place (MIPTM) method developed by BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH was applied. The stone columns were installed using the Wet Top Feed method.

"Yorkville Plaza II, a 40-storey signature condominium residence, is scheduled to open on Avenue Road in Toronto’s prestigious Bloor-Yorkville neighbourhood in spring 2017. In close proximity to Toronto’s subway system, the new tower requires six levels of underground parking, founded in wet, silty sand.Isherwood Geostructural Engineers (Isherwood) was retained in April 2012 by developer Camrost-Felcorp to provide a shoring and excavation solution to address the challenging site conditions. A 31-storey upscale residential building under renovation with three levels of parking, owned by Camrost-Felcorp, flanks the site on the north. Situated on the eastern border is a 7-storey building with three levels of parking. Avenue Road, a four-lane arterial road that brings heavy commuter traffic into downtown Toronto, runs along the western border, and on the southern border of the site is a busy City road that brings traffic into the popular Yorkville area. The tunnel for the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) overburdened east-west subway is located 14.5 m to the south, running below an existing 26-storey neighbouring building. Electrical and communication utilities (Bell) are closely located along the southern side. Non-documented existing excavation shoring, installed in the early 1970s, on the southern and western sides compounded the difficulties presented by the TTC tunnel.This paper presents the unique, non-conventional hybrid shoring solutions Isherwood developed to address the challenges presented by the site, as well as other complications that surfaced during the project: non-encroachment requirements (no tiebacks) beneath uncooperative neighbours, tight geometry to install shoring, and Toronto’s two coldest winters in decades.THE PROJECTBecause of circumstances associated with this site, for this project Isherwood designed two unique shoring walls which drew on their experience and expertise they had gained over the last 40 years. The following is the story of this site:Yorkville is an affluent neighbourhood in the heart of Toronto with a vibrant mix of high-rise towers, residential homes, tony restaurants and flagship shops. The development requires six levels of underground parking (a 20m deep excavation), with three levels undermining the high-rise buildings to the north and east and extending into wet, silty sand.Isherwood was retained in the spring of 2012 to design the excavation shoring. Isherwood’s scope also included field support, design, verification and monitoring. Finite Element Analysis was employed to confirm Isherwood’s design and anticipated movement of the south shoring wall and the TTC subway tunnel.The existing site was severed in two, with the proposed condominium tower slated for the southern portion. On the north half of the site stands a 31-storey building (Yorkville Plaza I at 21 Avenue Road), with three levels of underground parking, sitting on belled caissons which were one foot from the back of the proposed shoring wall so this would have to be considered in relation to the design and drilling methods. Constructed in the early 1970s, Yorkville Plaza I is currently being converted from the Four Seasons hotel to luxury condominiums by Camrost-Felcorp. To the east, directly adjacent to the proposed shoring, stands a 7-storey building (164 Cumberland Road) with three levels of parking, supported on spread footings founded on stiff clayey silt. The tunnel for the TTC’s busy east-west subway, a double box structure built by cut-and-cover in the 1960s, is located 14.5 m to the south, 9 m below grade, and running below an existing 26-storey building. Bell fibre optic communication cables and electrical lines, along with storm and sanitary sewers, are situated on the south and west sides of the site, leaving limited room to install shoring. Due to the heavy volume of commuter traffic on the four-lane arterial road (Avenue Road) to the west, site access and lane closure were not permitted here."

"The diameter of improved columns adopted by the original DJM Method had been 1000 mm, however, in order to comply with the social need for construction cost reduction, the Expanded Dry Jet Mixing (EX-DJM) Method with maximum column diameter expanded to 1300 mm was developed between 1998 and 2001 and has been widely applied since then. From the first application of EX-DJM in January 2002 for a first construction project, the total volume of improved soil has reached 325,000 m3 in 17 projects up to September 2014. Because of the advantages of the EX-DJM such as reduction of construction costs and periods leading to reduction in the number of improved columns, adoption of this method is expected to increase in the future. This paper describes the advantages of the EX-DJM, its construction results and case examples including those applied to restoration projects after the Great East Japan Earthquake, 2011.1. BACKGROUND OF DEVELOPMENTThe Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) Method is a soil stabilization method in which a powdery or granular binder is pneumatically fed into and mixed with soft soil to induce chemical reactions that stabilize and strengthen the soil. It was developed by government - private collaboration in Japan between 1977 and 1979. Up to March 2014, the total volume of soil improved by DJM method reached 33,500,000 m3. The initial diameter of improved columns of the original DJM Method was 1000 mm. In order to comply with the social need for construction cost reduction, the Expanded Dry Jet Mixing (EX-DJM) Method with maximum column diameter 1300 mm was developed between 1998 and 2001.2. ADVANTAGES OF EX-DJMThe construction equipment for the EX-DJM consists of two major parts, which are DJM machine and binder plant are shown in Fig. 1.The construction machine is of double mixing-shaft type with its column diameter expanded to 1200mm or 1300mm. In association with the increase in the column diameter, the binder feeder has also increased its discharge rate by approximately 1.69 times. Same as the increase rate of the area of original diameter 1000mm to diameter 1300mm are shown in Fig. 4."

"The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), which currently resides in a 1970s-era post-modern concrete structure just south of the University of California, Berkeley campus, was in need of a new home after an engineering evaluation revealed that the building possessed seismic deficiencies. Pressed for space, the University looked within its portfolio of properties and identified the site of the former University Printing Press facility as the place to build BAMPFA’s new home.The site was perfect; located one block east of bustling downtown Berkeley and its rapid transit station, and directly across the street from the western entrance to the UC Berkeley campus. Thousands of pedestrians pass by the site on a daily basis, thus granting BAMPFA the opportunity to reshape the corner of Center and Oxford Streets with a building that would not only welcome visitors to campus, but also serve as a creative hub for both the City of Berkeley and the UC Berkeley institution itself 1.The original museum plans, drawn up in the mid-2000s, called for complete demolition of the existing abandoned facility and replacement with a visually stunning structure designed by renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito. Even at this point, the shoring and means and methods requirements of the project were identified as a challenging component, incorporating a shored excavation bounded on three sides by busy city streets and a fourth side by an operating bank and occupied apartment building. Furthermore, a sequenced demolition would be required for the printing press facility’s three-story Administration Building (also known as the Admin Block), one-story printing press warehouse (also known as the Press Building), and an adjacent parking structure. Degenkolb Engineers was retained at that time as the shoring engineer to design the shoring to facilitate this work."

The designers and the practicing engineers have started using latest and cost effective techniques of ground improvements which utilise the weak and poor sub-soil deposits efficiently for the civil engineering construction. In the present investigation, a new concept of 'skirted granular piles' has been advocated. An effective method of construction of granular piles as an economical alternative to vibroflot, and the skirt has been developed. The construction technique is based on indigeneous know how which effectively utilises the man-power technology avoiding import of costly equipment suiting to the developing countries. Full scale insitu tests have been carried out at four sites, having different soil conditions, on virgin weak sub-soil, and improved ground by casting plain and skirted granular piles. Effectiveness of different types of skirt has been demonstrated through insitu tests. A simple analytical approach has been proposed to predict the ultimate pile capacity. The predicted values of ultimate capacity have been found to demonstrate a good correspondance. Granular pile behaviour in terms of pile depth, diameter, spacing and stress deformation characteristics of the improved ground have been discussed. A significant improvement in ultimate capacity in improved ground has been noted. This is further augmented when granular pile group is skirted.

As a part of the 1-15 Reconstruction Project, static and dynamic (high-strain) testing methods formed the basis to estimate long-term axial capacities, and to assess the magnitudes of bearing capacity gains (setup) from the end of installation to the time of static/dynamic tests weeks later. This paper summarizes the results of nine full scale pile load tests to failure in compression, and how the designers used these data to finalize pile selection and penetration criteria bridge-by-bridge in the final design stages. Soil conditions along the project alignment ranged from deep, lightly over-consolidated Lake Bonneville clays interbedded with granular strata of varying consistency, to sites dominated by dense alluvial deposits of cohesionless soils well above the water table. The test sites were selected to bracket the conditions that are expected. Twelve-, 16-, and 24-inch-OD pipe piles are to be used to support the new bridges. The team plans to impact-drive all piles closed-end to final penetrations. The test piles varied from 35-ft-long pipes driven to refusal in the shallow dense sands at some sites, to 115-ft-long pipes stopping at 3 blows per foot in predominantly cohesive deposits. The capacities gained with time proved to be reasonably predictable, and significant setup was noted both in the cohesive and cohesionless strata. The test program objectives included providing the means to estimate long-term capacities from short-term (24- to 48-hour) restrikes following installation of foundation piles during production driving operations.

"Remediation for Perris Dam has been proposed in response to deficiencies identified in a seismic stability study prepared by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) in 2005. Lenses of potentially liquefiable soil have been identified within the dam foundation which may lose strength during a seismic event. The remediation was designed primarily to limit deformation of the dam. Nineteen construction methods were compared and evaluated for the remediation. The final decision was to use cement deep soil mixing (CDSM) to strengthen the foundation and to construct a downstream berm to stabilize the dam. The entire CDSM treatment will cover over 4,000 linear feet of the downstream toe of the dam. Over 300,000 cubic yards of CDSM will be used to strengthen the foundation. The construction of the project started in Fall 2014 and is anticipated to take approximately 3 years. This paper describes the design aspects of using CDSM to treat the foundation, including laboratory testing, investigation of overstressing/cracking, extent of treatment, effect of CDSM on pore pressures under the dam, and the results of a full-scale CDSM test section.INTRODUCTIONPerris Dam is a zoned earthfill dam with a length of 2.2 miles, a maximum height of 128 feet, and a capacity of 131,450 acre-ft of water. The dam is located in Riverside County, California at the terminus of the East Branch of the State Water Project. The embankment was constructed between 1971 and 1973 over an alluvial deposit between the Bernasconi Hills to the South and Russell Mountains to the North. A rock outcrop divides the dam into left and right reaches when viewed from the reservoir looking downstream. The embankment soil was obtained from a borrow source at the North end of the reservoir. The dam has a sloping sandy clay core (Zone 1) with a 10-foot deep cutoff trench and a silty sand shell (Zone 2) with a downstream chimney and blanket drain (Zone 3 and Zone 4) as shown in Figure 1."

"INTRODUCTIONTerminal 46 is located just south of downtown Seattle, and is one of the Port of Seattle’s busiest container terminals. The Terminal 46 Redevelopment Project was undertaken to replace the existing 15-m-wide (50 ft) cranes along the apron with 30-m-wide (100 ft) cranes, which can unload larger, post- Panamax ships. The project included upgrading the existing waterside crane rail with new piles and constructing a new land-side rail behind the sheetpile bulkhead. The new piles had to be installed adjacent to the existing apron without causing damage, which was a signifi cant geotechnical challenge due to the soft soil conditions at the site. An instrumentation program performed during the test pile program evaluated this challenge and allowed for the development of specifi c production pile installation procedures that had the least possible effect on construction costs and schedule. SITE HISTORYThe site lies along the west side of Elliott Bay, north of the mouth of the Duwamish Waterway. Prior to development, this area was part of the tide fl ats where the Duwamish River drained into Elliott Bay. Prior to 1970, there were several existing timber piers and structures in the area. In the 1970s, the Port of Seattle constructed a 900-m-long (3,000 ft), 30- m-wide (100 ft) apron to support fi ve, 15-m-wide (50 ft) container cranes. The contained backland area was then fi lled with dredged spoils (sand and silt with organics) and the upper 5 to 20 m (16 to 65 ft) backfi lled with sand and gravel.The existing apron was constructed using 0.4 m (16 in) octagonal prestressed concrete piles to support the precast concrete deck and crane rails. The pile-supported bents were spaced at 6.1 m (20 ft), center-to-center, along the longitudinal direction. Pile lengths typically varied from about 20 to 40 m (65 to 130 ft) with 15 to 26 m penetration below mudline (50 to 85 ft penetration). The slope below the apron was constructed at about 1.75 horizontal to 1 vertical to allow for suffi cient water depth for cargo ships. In most areas, a riprap buttress was placed at the toe of the slope. A typical cross section of the apron is shown on Figure 2.Several stability, settlement and pile driving issues arose during the original construction of T-46 (Pita, 1983). Reportedly, movement of the submarine slope occurred during pile driving, resulting in settlement behind the bulkhead. Pile driving reportedly caused settlement of adjacent piles. In addition, some piles were “running” (dropping quickly under one hammer blow) during installation."

This paper addresses the experience designing and installing bored piles for the King’s Cross area. This includes continuous flight auger and rotary bored piles, with a range of diameters between 600 mm and 1200 mm, reaching a maximum depth of 56 m below ground level. Existing Network Rail Thameslink twin bored running tunnels are located directly beneath the subject plots. These tunnels have an external diameter of 6.6 m and the crowns of the tunnels are very shallow, in some cases just 10 m below the existing ground level. Some plots needed piles to be installed in close proximity to the tunnels, which required additional control measures and contingency plans. Pile verticality was monitored as the tip of each pile advanced and in-tunnel monitoring readings were verified and are presented. Lessons learned from designing, installing and testing the piles and monitoring the tunnels are addressed in this paper.

The introduction of this size and type of piling rig is intended to address a multipurpose foundation activity. The 8000 denotes the size of equipment that is attached to the mast, namely 8000 Kg. Larger equipment can be carried subject to adjustment of rig geometry. The 8000 series rig will easily accept hydraulic piling hammers and CFA equipment, but for the purpose of this discussion it will be equipped with an auxiliary power pack that is matched to twin vibrators. The design of the siamesed vibrators allows long tube equipment or piles to be driven with a short mast configuration that provides a lower overturning risk. It is easily adapted within minutes to carry out other foundation requirements that are required on the same contract. The existing US-70 Bridge over the Gila River at Bylas, Arizona is planned to be replaced due to its current poor condition. The replacement bridge is planned to be a 15-span, 1,904-foot (580 meter) long bridge, the third-longest bridge in the state highway system. Within the Gila River floodplain, granular alluvial soil is underlain by cohesive lacustrine soil; bedrock was expected due to nearby terrain but not encountered within the geotechnical exploration depth of 166.5 feet (51 meters) or less. Based on the anticipated loading conditions, design scour depths and the soil conditions, the full structural loads are carried by large diameter drilled shafts; therefore accurately determining the axial capacity of the proposed drilled shafts has important practical and safety implications. The conventional methods for axial capacity determination may be overly conservative to use for design in the site’s layered granular and hard clay soils. An Osterberg cell load test was performed to obtain detailed information on the load transfer from the drilled shaft in side friction and base resistance to allow optimization of the bridge foundation design. The fullscale field test played a significant role in the design of the project’s deep foundations, notably, by incorporating the specific subsoil properties and consequently, an exact prediction of the load-settlement behavior under loading. This paper provides the results of the geotechnical site investigations, drilled shaft load testing procedures, and shaft load distribution from the load test results. Comparisons were developed between predicted axial capacities of drilled shafts using several design methodologies and the axial capacity measured from static load testing. The load test results showed that underestimation of the axial capacity is evident using conventional methodologies. The exact prediction of the load-settlement behavior under loading combined with a site-specific design approach, resulted in a substantial reduction of foundation costs due to reduced drilled shaft dimensions.

They all have their strengths and limitations and their focus may vary a little per country due to local regulations and typical local building activities, but the main question remains what added value another new guideline would have. More likely it would add to the confusion instead of providing overview.Companies with larger experience in geotechnical monitoring (often larger consultancy firm, contractors or clients) are already quite familiar with its benefits do not really need a new guideline in how to design and effectively apply sophisticated geotechnical monitoring systems for special projects.Therefore the aim of the MIC is to focus a little more towards smaller organizations - that are less familiar with monitoring and instrumentation - and the more ‘regular’ type of project that they are mainly involved in. The MIC wants to create a tool which helps them to create risk awareness, to understand the benefits of geotechnical monitoring and to provide them information about how and where to find the right partners and equipment to setup and apply appropriate monitoring systems for their projects.Monitoring and instrumentation benefits are for example:• Risk control during construction stage;• Costs reduction in design and construction (taken limitation of geotechnical aspects into account).• Prevent of unnecessary delays in construction work• Increasing general awareness of geotechnical risks and possibilities of monitoring.The cost of monitoring compared to the cost of failure and/or the savings that can be achieved play a role in the work of the committee. DFI members benefit from the shared knowledge by the MIC on monitoring and instrumentation within their process of risk management."

The subject of this session is "Equipment Installa­tion, Recent Developments". This is a subject which is not usually addressed at conferences of Foundation Engineering. It is rare to find sessions dealing with the technological side of deep foundations, a subject which only recently seems to have aroused sufficient interest at national and international conferences. It is therefore natural for the subject of "Equipment", or the tools used to implement the various "technologies", to be over­looked or mentioned only occasionally during the discussion of other issues. At conferences, most of the attention is attached to research and to the theoretical interpretation of the performance and behaviour of deep foundations, as well as to establishing the most suitable calculation algorithms and approaches for the study, design and control of foundation structures. It is almost as if the subject of equipment is felt to be less important or, perhaps, that it is considered to belong more strictly to mechanical engineering than to civil engineering.

"In 2001, a pile trial site was established at Limelette in Belgium consisting of 25 displacement screw piles and 5 driven pre-cast piles. Interested parties were invited to participate in a pile prediction event, whereby they would submit predicted static load test behaviour in the form of load settlement plots. These predictions could be based on soil investigation results supplied by the organizers, or dynamic load test measurements.Following the submission deadline, the organisers released the results of static load tests for comparison.Of all the six participants, including Statnamic, the SIMBAT method was independently accredited with achieving the best predictions.This paper examines at the differences between SIMBAT and other systems, and presents the correlations from the Limelette trial.INTRODUCTIONThe Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) initiated an ambitious research programme involving the construction and testing of some 60 trial piles spread between two sites, a clay site at Sint Kateline Waver and a sandy site at the BBRI headquarters at Limelette. The project was financed largely by the Belgian Ministry of Economic affairs. (ref 1.) This paper refers only to the second site.At Limelette, six different types of displacement pile were installed: one driven pre-cast and five cast in place screw piles - Atlas, DeWaal, Fundex, Olivier and Omega. "The project’s goal was to construct the Al Ghazala Intercontinental, a multi-use development in the bay area of Tripoli overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The site of the project is located approximately 500 ft (150 m) from the Mediterranean coast, near the Al Ghazala roundabout in the town center of Tripoli, Libya. The investor of the project was Magna Properties Group, Ltd. – Libya, the main contractor was Man Enterprise S.A.L., and the design and construction management was performed by Dar Al-Handasah Engineering. Trevi S.p.A. was contracted to perform the design and construction of the anchored diaphragm walls and dewatering systems for the excavation of a two-level basement car park, which extends across the full footprint of the site.The site was approximately 640 ft by 230 ft (195 m by 70 m) in plan and nearly flat. The groundwater level typically varies from about 11 ft to 23 ft (3.4 m to 7.0 m) above mean sea level. To construct the required raft foundation, it was necessary to excavate the area down to El. -15.7 ft to -26.3 ft (-4.8 m to -8.0 m), which resulted in an excavation depth ranging from about 27 ft to 39 ft (8.3 m to 12.0 m) below the existing ground surface.Subsurface ConditionsThe subsurface site investigation was performed in three phases by Al-Tamier Engineering Consulting Bureau. During Phase 1, a preliminary investigation was undertaken during the early stages of the project to obtain information about the general stratigraphy and groundwater level at the site. Phase 2 was performed to obtain subsurface information and design parameters, and Phase 3 was performed as a supplementary ground investigation to investigate unexpected ground conditions identified during Phase 2. In total, 14 boreholes were drilled to depths ranging from about 80 ft to 180 ft (24 to 55 m). The generalized subsurface profile is quite heterogeneous, and is predominantly composed of sand with silt and gravel that is underlain by limestone, calcarenite and claystone"
