Mining firms are widely criticised for their adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time many firms in the industry devote extensive resources, both financial and managerial, to the reduction or elimination such impacts. Very considerable improvements have been made, although these are sometimes overshadowed by a few high-profile accidents, such as the occasional collapse of a cyanide-containing tailings dam. In parallel, much effort is also directed at projecting a positive environmental image, as witnessed by extensive environmental reporting, both on paper and increasingly through web-platforms. Mining projects today almost invariably involve some form of environmental protection. In industrial countries regulations in this area are extremely stringent, as is enforcement. In less well developed countries, regulation and enforcement may be weaker, but firms are in many cases and for a number of reasons committing themselves to high levels of environmental protection, even if they might get away without doing so. Research in the area of environmental performance of mining firms has so far paid much attention to concepts such as sustainability indicators and the sustainability of individual firms. Given the still raging debates about the appropriate way to determine the degree to which any given firm is sustainable (Welford 1995) as well as the usefulness of what will in the final analysis be a value judgement, anyone on the sidelines of the debate will come back to the fundamental issue, how is knowledge that a particular firm has been judged ?sustainable? going to be made use of. This issue remains unresolved, which may explain the lack of progress in formulating a useful definition of a sustainable firm The question addressed in this paper is not so much about what firms are doing on the ground or in any particular case of environmental protection, but more in the subsequent use of these efforts - and by extension - on the overall direction of corporate environmental strategy. The fundamental problem facing all mining firms is that they cannot easily benefit from unilaterally reducing their environmental impact. The firm can of course avoid liability and keep a variety of stakeholders happy and hence experience lower costs of obtaining the [input] resources they need (in a broad sense, not just minerals), but this represents only part of the opportunities available form pursuing an environmental strategy (Reinhardt 2000). The other part, which may have an enormous potential, involves the concepts of competitor management and product differentiation. The logic of keeping stakeholders happy has been most forcefully argued by Pfeffer and Salanchick (1978) who link the behaviour of firms in all domains to their ability to obtain the resources they need, at a cost that is lower than it would otherwise be (Pfeffer & Salanccik 1978). Several varieties of strategy can be included under this heading, including cost reduction and risk management. The alternative logic is to convince customers that they want to pay more for minerals supplied by mining firm X or directly attributable to mine Y, or by making all mineral users pay more. These two strategies, which may be referred to as product differentiation and competitor management, respectively (Reinhardt 2000) are related to the demand side of mineral supply, whereas cost reduction and risk management are related to the supply side. "The Bathurst area has recorded mining production as early as 1837, although the bulk of the production has come in recent years. Production has been mainly from the well-known massive sulphide deposits, but vein, gossan, and a variety of other deposits have also been mined. This paper summarizes the history of the mined deposits, along with tonnages and grades produced.A number of ""firsts"" have been noted in the Bathurst area. The A Zone deposit, located in the Heath Steele area, was the first in the world discovered using airborne electromagnetic methods. Heap leaching of gold from the gossan zone at Caribou was the first operation of its kind in Canada. The Keymet mine was the first base metal (lead-zinc) mine in New Brunswick. "IntroductionMine drainage, surface. drainage and process liquors are the principal mine and mill effluents. The quantity and quality of these flows varies according to mineralogy, type and scale of mining, the process, tailing disposal, local ground conditions and climate.Typical contaminants remaining after solids sedimentation are colloidal or semi-colloidal particles, acids, alkalis, metals in solution, cyanides and thiosalts. Environmental regulations and guidelines have been issued in detail by the appropriate government agencies and will not be reviewed here. Revisions and additions are being made as our comprehension and abilities increase. Some contaminants of consequence have not been specifically regulated as practical treatment technology has not been identified. Thiosalts fall into that category as do the derivatives of the first stage of cyanide oxidation - cyanates.Most mining activities have present or foreseeable water treatment requirements. Because process economics can be adversely skewed by the environmental factor, the acknowledged objective of every operation must be to identify and anticipate those requirements.The evaluation and selection of water treatment techniques for mine-mill applications is complicated by the fact that most mine-mill effluents are high volume, dilute and chemically complex systems. Treatment processes applicable to most contaminants are: chemical or biological oxidation; neutralization and/or precipitation; liquid/solids separation. Other processes such as ion exchange, electro-deposition, foam fractionation, freeze crystallization and reverse osmosis offer the possibility of selective removal or concentration of contaminents. The latter tediniques, representing a slightly higher level of technology, are less suited to the large, low value flows usually encountered in the mine environment."

The changes to The Mining Tax Act proposed in the budget are mean t 10 simplify the current system without any loss of revenue to the government. It goes without saying that some operators will benefit from the changes while others will pay more taxes after 1985.With regard to ongoing matters at the federal level, the proposed carve-out legislation and the issue of northern allowances are being discussed with government officials, and a small victory has recently been scored with regard 10 the laxation of certain share transactions of prospectors and grubstakers. A report on these issues is provided herein.Ontario BudgetOn October 24, 1985, Ontario Finance Minister Robert F. Nixon tabled a budget proposing several significant changes to both the Ontario Mining Tax Act and the province’s income tax legislation.Mining Tax ActA flat rate of tax and reduced processing allowances highlight proposed changes to The Mining Tax Act. The proposed changes, with a comparison to the existing system, are set out in Table I.The most significant change is the replacement of the graduated tax rate schedule with a flat 20010 tax rate. This is a welcome change for most mine operators who viewed the high rate of 30% on profit over $20 million as counter-productive.However, the flat rate of ta x may not be welcome to all operators. Generally speaking, operators with less than $ 10 million annual profit are better off under the graduated rate system, while operators with annual profit exceeding $10 million will benefit from the 20010 tax rate."

"IntroductionTHIS IS a brief discussion of certain regional and economic aspects of the Coast Range of British Columbia. Between Portland canal and the 60th parallel of latitude, only the eastern margin of the Range is in Canada. The solely British Columbia interval extends from Portland canal to Burrard inlet. Personal observations in various parts of this area form the basis for much of this paper.Regional GeologyGranitic RocksSome of the best, most continuous exposures in the Coast Range are found at sea level. Reconnaissance study of the coastline has shown that the Range is predominantly granitic in character, but there simplicity ends, for the term 'granitic' as applied to the Coast Range covers a variety of mineralogical compositions. Actual granite is quite uncommon, occurring mainly in irregular or dyke-like masses that do not achieve batholithic dimensions. It is commonly pinkish, relatively homogeneous, and exhibits few of the deformational features that are obvious in much of this plutonic complex.Most of the granitic rocks of the Range fall well within the compositional limits of quartz diorite and granodiorite. The problem of resolving the great mass of these rocks into smaller coherent units is in general a difficult one. As noted above, granitic rock of uniform composition and texture is found in restricted areas and can be outlined without much difficulty. One such body occurs on the southern shore of Nelson island."

Empirical and phenomenological models of SAG and AG mills have dominated the scene for the last few decades, being used nearly every time a mill is scale-up or an attempt is made to improve its performance. However, in spite of their success, these models fail to describe the details of both the grinding environment and the breakage mechanisms. The result is a generally good track record, with a few – but very important – instances when these models fall short in their predictions, which can be very costly. Further, nearly all of these models require detailed calibration to industrial and pilot plant data, being costly in their application, although still with limited predictive capabilities. Recognizing these challenges, a new model framework has been proposed which overcomes the limitations of currently used models by coupling the microscale population balance model, the discrete element model and functions that describe internal classification at the mill grate. This model framework has already been applied to describe breakage in ball mills, with showing very promising results. However, in the case of SAG and AG mills a much greater level of complexity is involved in the model, given the interaction between the mechanical environment that is formed totally or, in part, by the ore itself, and the breakage response in the mill. The paper describes the model framework, demonstrating how it can address appropriately effects such as mill speed, mill filling and size distribution, on the response from the mill. Some of the advantages of the model are related to its intrinsic multi-component and dynamic nature, which allows simulating appropriately mixtures of ores of different competences in a transient manner.

A major clay products industry in the Medicine Hat area since before 1910 has maintained a continued interest in the clays of the Cypress Hills. For the first forty years the materials used were local red-burning Cretaceous and Pleistocene clays and sands and high-quality stoneware clays of the Whitemud Formation at Eastend, Saskatchewan. Recently a much broader spectrum of raw materials has been brought into use. Including the exposures of the Eagle Butte structure, the Cypress Hills present a 1200 m section of clay-like sediments. Of this 1200 m about 94 per cent, the high montmorillonite shales of the Upper Cretaceous, can be considered useless, or nearly so; the remaining six per cent, all fresh-water beds, presents a wide variety of potentially useful materials. The development of these clay resources is complicated by deep surface creep on the south flank of the Cypress Hills, by largescale slumping on the north flank and by a structural complex in the Eagle Butte area.

Since 2005, Compafifa Contractual Minera Candelaria (CCMC) has defined various strategies which aim to optimize the usage of the available energy in each of the SAG grinding circuit modules (SABC-A configuration). For this purpose, the use of larger size balls along with operating with an optimum balls/load ratio has been implemented. Additionally, in the ball mills, the amount of balls in relation to the equipment's usable diameter has been optimized. In the pebble crushing circuit, the percentage of material passing 12 mm (112 in) product has been increased by 15% by: (1) modifying the crusher mantle profile, (2) implementing a strategy for maximizing the power in each crusher, (3) using continuous improvement tools (Lean - Six Sigma), (4) redesigning SAG mills discharge grates, and (5) changing discharge grates in order to control the crusher feed size distribution profile. All these activities have improved plant throughput by 1,000 t/d with no significant capital investment. As part of the energy consumption optimization study, we have considered determining the optimum operational rate of each SAG mill, in relation to the mill liner life and also the improving the control strategy in conventional grinding.

Microwave (MW) energy has been used widely for several decades for communications, food processing, wood drying, vulcanization of rubber and medical therapy. Recently, this technology was found to be capable of successfully sintering ceramic and metallic powder materials, with the advantages of reducing soaking times and sintering temperatures. Unlike conventional heating, MW radiation works through the absorption of the microwave energy by a material placed in an electromagnetic field within the microwave cavity. A far more efficient heating process is produced due to the unique ability of microwaves in selectively heating a pecific part of the material with desirable dielectrical properties. This exploratory research was initiated with the objective of locally sintering the thermal barrier coating of gas turbine components using MW radiation. This novel technique may allow repairing of the component without subjecting the entire piece to unnecessary elevated temperatures and reduction of process time and cost. Y ttria stabilized zirconia was used in this study and sintering was conducted using a multimodal 1.2 kW microwave facility. Three configurations of heating setup were experimented and the preliminary results will be discussed in this paper.

Uranium exploration expenditure in Australia reached a record level of A$220.5 million in 2008, which has subsequently declined to A$185.2 million for the year ended 30 June 2009. Recent discoveries include: Ranger 3 Deeps east of Ranger open pit (Northern Territory), Pepegoona and Yadglin sandstone hosted deposits (South Australia), and Thunderball project (Northern Territory). Australia?s Reasonably Assured Resources recoverable at costs of <US$80/kg U at June 2009 are estimated to be 1,210,000 t U, 4% higher than the estimate for December 2008. The main additions were in the south eastern portion of the Olympic Dam orebody. The Olympic Dam Expansion is based on a large open pit and will increase output to an annual capacity of 19,000 t U3O8; 750,000 t copper; 800,000 ounces gold. The Four Mile in situ recovery project was approved in July 2009. An ion exchange facility is to be constructed at Four Mile and uranium-bearing resins will be transported to the Beverley plant to recover the uranium. Recent developments at Ranger mine, and Honeymoon, Oban and Yeelirrie projects are discussed.

"THE FOLLOWING are some comments on the article, ""International Trade in Minerals and Economic Development"", by M. Sengupta, published in the October 1976 issue of the CIM Bulletin.Sengupta says in the introduction that ""The mechanism through which this growth (economic development) has occurred is basic ally straight forward"". His statement is quite misleading and perhaps it is better to quote Gerald Meier:""Development economists must operate in an imperfect second-best world, away from the simplified premises of neoclassical economics. Their subject matter is therefore not yet a coherent or self-contained discipline. Denied recourse to a set of general principles, perhaps the student's most sensible introduction to economic development is through a study of 'leading issues' that are at the time a major preoccupation of the development economist and development practitioner"" .Sengupta quotes an authority who wrote 18 years ago. Academic and operating development economists today know full well that existing theory is quite deficient. Sociologists, political scientists and engineers in this field also know that economic, social, political and technical development involves all academic disciplines.Sengupta indicates that tariffs in developed countries prevent less developed countries from supplying refined metal, or manufactured and semi-manufactured products. He lists Zambia, Chile and Zaire as examples of copper concentrate exporters, as inadequately shown in Table 1. He is wrong."

The magnetometer which was developed during the war for detecting submarines has proven exceedingly valuable in outlining deep-seated structures in oil exploration, and will be useful also to geologists in outlining regional structural features in the Precambrian. Our magnetometer has been developed to outline local and detail structures. 1 am quite sure that all geophysicists and geologists would agree with me that, in ore prospecting, it is important to obtain as much detailed information as possible. We know that, as we ascend from the ground and get away from the magnetic ore-bearing structures and orebodies, the magnetic intensity decreases rapidly, but, worse than that, we lose the details even faster. Figure l shows two strong, very sharp, magnetic &apos;highs&apos; over two orebodies which, as our distance increases, rapidly merge into one fairly broad, moderately strong anomaly. If we drilled on this maximum, we would not encounter any of the orebodies. Therefore, we should fly the airborne magnetometer as close to the ground as possible in order to duplicate the results of the magnetic ground surveys. The first chance to accomplish this came with the helicopter, which is an exceedingly maneuverable aircraft. It can be landed in a cleared space not much more than fifty feet square. With floats, it can be landed anywhere, even in a swamp, on thin ice, or on soft snow. It can stand still in the air, hovering over a given point. It can ascend and descend vertically, fly sideways and even backwards, at the will of the pilot. It flies forward at any speed up to l00 miles an hour. The helicopter can be taken to any desired position at a given time. It can fly at any useful altitude from a few feet to several thousand feet above the ground. It can fly very close to the ground with safety. In bare areas, the survey flight may be performed a few feet above the ground. In forested areas, however, the flights, to clear the trees, must be made at l00 to 150 feet. To mark out a certain point, a small parachute-like marker may be draped over a tree or laid on the ground. This can be done from the helicopter without touching the ground.

The Outotec HydroCopper® process is a novel technology, developed and registered by Outotec Technology Oy, for leaching copper from chalcopyrite using cupric chloride solution. The leaching process is operated at atmospheric pressure in a stirred tank reactor, at temperatures near the boiling point of water and pH values between 1.5 and 2.5. During the leaching of chalcopyrite in cupric chloride solution, a reaction product layer forms on the mineral surface. In the present work, the formation and the composition of the reaction product layer was studied in an environment similar to that of the HydroCopper® process. The effect of the process parameters on the reaction product layer was investigated. Electrochemical measurements, including A.C. impedance spectroscopy and microscopic observations were carried out and an equivalent circuit was used to determine the surface parameters, such as the reaction product layer capacitance and the charge transfer resistance. The results suggest that, at low pH, a passivating sulfur-rich layer forms, whereas at high pH, a more porous iron-rich layer was detected. The values measured can give useful information for optimising the leaching parameters of the HydroCopper® process. Cu2007

Al powder is used extensively as an antioxidant in carbon-containing bricks, but it cannot be used directly in water-based carbon-containing castables due to its hydration tendency. To overcome this problem, in this work, SiO2-PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) inorganic-organic hybrid coatings have been prepared via sol-gel processing, and used to coat Al powder. The hydration behaviour of uncoated and coated Al powders has been investigated in water at 60 or 100°C for 36h by examining phase and microstructural changes. While significant hydration is detected in uncoated Al powder, no obvious hydration is detected in coated Al powder, indicating that its hydration resistance has been greatly improved. Oxidation resistance of graphite coexisting with uncoated or coated Al powder was also investigated in air at 1250°C for 1.5h. The oxidation ratio of graphite coexisting with coated Al powder was similar to that of graphite coexisting with uncoated Al powder, indicating that both powders showed similar antioxidising behaviour. This, along with the much improved hydration resistance, makes the coated Al powder a potential antioxidant in carbon-containing castables systems.

Until quite recently, the coal in the Cape Breton field was won from comparatively thick seams with light cover, and from submarine areas, and the system of mining naturally followed was pillar-and-stall. This sytem permitted of cheap extraction, and enabled production from localities where other methods could not be employed to good advantage. Thus the pillar-and-stall system, applied to conditions as stated, justified its adoption. Our working seams today, however, are practically all under heavy cover, or are moving in that direction, and with this gradual increase in cover came the increased cost of roadway maintenance. At Princess colliery, the system of pillar-and-stall was followed until roof and bottom conditions became such that further operations were unprofitable, and the longwall method was then adopted as an economic necessity. This fact should be borne in mind when operating costs of both systems are being compared. The longwall method is not held as a cure for all difficulties of heavy cover, but through it these difficulties can be overcome with less expense than by pillar-and-stall. The longwall system of mining, strictly speaking, is one by which a seam of coal is totally extracted in one operation. There are, however, many modifications of longwall, and in some cases it is difficult to determine whether certain practices should be classed as longwall or pillar-and-stall, or a combination of both.

The quality and durability of asphalted roads strongly depends on the final step in the road construction process; the profiling and compaction of the fresh spread asphalt. During compaction machine operators continuously make decisions on how to proceed with the compaction accounting for project specific aspects as: ambient conditions, road geometry, roller type, asphalt mixture characteristics and behavior of other machines. In discussions over quality improvement in road construction it is often suggested to robotize rollers. To operate such robots would of course require operational strategies and routines. The reality of this moment is that these operational strategies and routines are not documented. To identify the existing best working practices and, ultimately, to proceed with developing automated robotized compactors, the knowledge of machine operators should at first be explored and described in a formalized way. Unfortunately operators have difficulty verbalizing their expertise. Observation of behavior, as machine movement patterns, could be helpful to extract the operational strategies, but such observations are time and labor consuming. To overcome this burden we developed a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. In this VR environment operators perform compaction virtually, and their operational choices are traced and analysed. This paper describes this VR development and explains how it helps in following machine operators and extracting their (tacit) professional knowledge. The road geometry and the working conditions are visually represented; the operators show - rather than explain - how they would proceed with the compaction process in the given conditions. Movements of virtual machines are documented, analysed, visualised and discussed. This VR approach is expected to contribute to learning, to more formal description of operational strategies; stepping stones towards compaction algorithms for roller robotisation.

Introduction This paper outlines the causes of underground fires at Noranda Mines and the precautionary measures taken to guard against such fi res. Shafts There are six shafts (Figures and lA) on the property, of which N os. 1 and 2 are abandoned. Nos. 3, 4, and 5 are the present working openings from surface and No 6 is an internal shaft. No. 3 is used primarily as a service shaft, while Nos.?1 and 5 are the main hoisting shafts. Orebodies The orebodies are of two distinct types. There are the massive sulphide bodies, and the areas of mineralized rhyolite containing gold values and a silica content high enough for fluxing purposes. The massive sulphide bodies contain chalcopyl&apos;ite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of sphalerite and magnetite. The concentration of particular sulphides varies even within the same body. It is the areas high in pyrite, and to a lesser degree those, high in pyrrhotite, that are of particular interest.

Flotation separation is expected to be related to the degree of dispersion of the pulp. For instance, highly aggregated systems may show reduced selectivity, reduced entrainment and increased flotation rate. In an attempt to test the impact of aggregation on flotation, we have taken advantage of the effect of Mg ions. Using combinations of Mg2+ and pH gave a wide variation in aggregation of several Cu-Zn ores (measured by settling rate) and corresponding flotation response was determined by batch tests. The trials were conducted on-site at Louvicourt and Agnico-Eagle. In a majority of cases a similar trend in aggregation and flotation selectivity (grade at given recovery) was observed. At Louvicourt, improved selectivity with increasing aggregation at pH 10.5 was found. At Agnico-Eagle, an analogous association between aggregation and selectivity was observed at pH 11.5. It is suggested that aggregation influences particle entrainment, the increased effective particle size reducing gangue recovery and hence improving selectivity.

"Aggregates are the low-cost mineral raw material of building construction. Large volumes of aggregate are consumed each year. The availability of aggregates in southern Ontario is discussed in the context of the geological formations in which they occur. Sand and gravel are abundant in glacial deposits and in recent sediments. A knowledge of the glacial history is important for their discovery. Bedrock formations provide a variety of aggregates in Ontario. Knowledge of the rock types involved and of the depth of overburden are important for evaluation of the aggregate potential of bedrock resources in an area. Utilization of available resources intensifies as the population increases. Urban development makes it progressively more difficult to satisfy the demands of the construction industry. The effects of urban development on the aggregate resource base of an area are illustrated by developments and consumption statistics in the Toronto- centred region. There is an obvious need for a comprehensive survey of available resources in urban areas to serve as a guide in land-use planning. To fill this need, staff members of the Industrial Minerals Section, Geological Branch, Ontario Department of Mines and Northern Affairs, are engaged in mapping projects and mineral resource studies in southern Ontario as well as in some urban areas of northern Ontario."
