Three-dimensional models are in increasing demand for design, maintenance, operations and construction project management. Point-clouds are the main output of automatic data collection using laser-scanners and photogrammetric technologies. Pipe-works may comprise 50% of the value of important construction projects such as industrial and research facilities. We have developed a practical and cost-effective approach, based on the Hough-transform and judicious use of domain constraints, to find, recognize and reconstruct/model 3D pipes within point-clouds fully automatically. The developed approach allows pipe growing within a 3D point-cloud. It samples the point-cloud to sequential orthogonal slices, detects pipe?s cross-sections within sampled slices and grows the pipe along the cross sections centerlines. It is validated using laser-scanner data from construction of the Engineering-VI building on the University of Waterloo (UW) campus. The system works on a typical laptop. Recognition and localization results are within a few millimeters. The presented approach opens the gate to broad applications of pipe-network modeling.

Brazilian sulphide ores can contain a significant content of chloride and fluoride, which are harmful to bacteria and thus bioleaching. This work summarizes a four-year research investigation on the effect of fluoride on both bacterial growth and sulphide bioleaching, supported by studies carried out with secondary copper ores. Firstly, the influence of fluoride on the kinetics of ferrous iron bio-oxidation with Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans was addressed. Values as low as 10.0 mg/L F- fully inhibited bacterial growth, although fluoride toxicity could be overcome by the presence of aluminium, which reduced the concentration of hydrofluoric acid through the formation of aluminium-fluoride complexes. This required at least a 2:1 aluminium/fluoride molar ratio, which ensured bacterial growth rate values similar to that observed in the absence of fluoride ions. Subsequently, both batch and column bioleaching with mesofiles (30 ºC), moderate thermofile (50 ºC) or hyperthermophiles (67.5 ºC) of two secondary copper ore samples were analyzed with focus on the relevant effects of fluoride-containing minerals on the bioleaching of such sulphide ores.

"One of the most concerns of room and pillar mining system is subsidence of the ground surface due to coal mining particularly in room and pillar mines. Subsidence of ground surface is a result of floor, pillar, or roof failure of the mine. At the same, due to many difficulties associated with surface disposal facilities of coal refuse, some mining companies are trying to use underground space as a disposal storage place. In this study, stability and subsidence analyses of an underground coal mine located in the Illinois Basin are conducted. This room and pillar mine was abandoned and later on was used as a storage place to accommodate the coal fine refuse with slurry backfilling method. The geological stratigrophy and geomechanical properties of the mine floor and roof were collected. Floor and pillar stability analyses were conducted for areas with various extraction ratios. The stability of the mine was evaluated both prior and after slurry backfilling. The floor and pillar stability analyses results of the mine due to moisture exposure after slurry backfilling are discussed. The subsidence potential due to mine failure is also evaluated.INTRODUCTIONA typical lithology of coal seams in the Illinois Basin consists of weak underclay stratum. The immediate weak underclay causes frequent floor instability problems in Illinois underground coal mines. There are two different stages in assessing floor stability of the mines where slurry backfilling is planned. The first stage is during the mining operation when weak underclay layer squeezes under pillar stress and results in punching or bearing capacity failure. The second stage is after slurry backfilling. During this stage, the slurry material soaks non-durable floor layers and causes strength reduction in floor material. Pillar stability conditions should also be taken into account during both the operational period and after the slurry backfilling."

An alumina-silica coating was deposited on a nickel substrate by sol-gel process, and the structures and composition were evaluated, The sols were made from aluminium and silicon alkoxide, and an acid catalyst including HCl, To produce adherent silica coatings on nickel, various additives such as surfactant, viscose additive and drying control chemical additives were introduced to the system, and appropriate drying and firing cycles were applied after dipping in solution. The hot corrosion and oxidation resistance of the coating at different temperatures were investigated, The structure and uniformity of the coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), The results indicate that a uniform coating of alumina silica can be produced on a nickel substrate by optimizing the composition and process variables of the sol. Coatings can protect substrates from oxidation and hot corrosion at different temperature up to 1000°C, but is not very effective for hot-corrosion resistance at 1000°C.

Vale Canada?s Birchtree Mine, located in Thompson Manitoba, has been experiencing problems with hanging wall / footwall dilution, as well as sloughing off of adjacent stopes and temporary stope block backs. Birchtree Mine is interested in determining how time affects the stability of their open stope blocks. Many factors simultaneously influence open stope stability (rock mass quality, joint condition, stress condition). This makes it challenging to determine the influence of a single parameter such as exposure time or stand-up time. This study focuses on determining the effect of exposure time on open stope dilution and combines stress analysis and empirical based approaches.

"Over-all recovery of cadmium has been increased at the plants of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, since the construction of a slag fuming plant and baghouse where smelter flue dust is recovered. This pa-per outlines the distribution of the cadmium in plant products from the concentrator to the refining department.The leaching of cadmium-bearing precipitates from the zinc plant is also discussed. This consists of a two-stage leach; first with sulphuric acid and then with copper sulphate. Details of the leaches are outlined along with the safety measures practised in handling the hydrogen and arsine evolved.The paper describes the final preparation of electrolyte for the refining cells by purification for copper and thallium. Deposition of cadmium, using a polyacrylamide as an addition agent, is discussed.An outline is given of the melting procedures, under either sodium hydroxide or zinc chloride, and of the sub-sequent treatment of the dross to recover entrained cadmium and thallium."

"A preliminary computational fluid flow model has been developed to simulate the flow field of liquid steel in the mold region of billet mold casting. This study reports the effect of different Submerged Entry Nozzles (SEN) on the fluid flow in round and square billet, curved mold, casters. In this study, ANSYS Fluent 14.5 software was used to model the 3-D turbulent flow of liquid steel. The standard k-0 model was used to simulate turbulence in the mold region. Similarly, the species transport equations were discretized to simulate the dye injection test into the mold cavity. The behavior of flow in the mold region was validated against previous experimental work. Predicted results showed that different nozzle types plus the slight curvatures in the molds can significantly influence the flow patterns generated within the mold region, and thereby affect the finished quality of the billet products.INTRODUCTIONConventional Continuous Casting (C.C) processes are presently used to solidify more than 95% of the 1.5 billion tons of steel now produced in the world annually (World Steel in Figure, 2014). This overwhelming contribution of C.C processes for steel production is the prime motivation for this study, in order to understand and optimize the casting processes and thereby reduce internal defects and minimize energy consumption. The primary objective of all C.C processes is to maintain liquid metal purity during the casting process and to create a uniform flow within the caster so as to avoid internal and external defects. In this regard, studying fluid flows in the mold region of continuous caster has attracted many research groups, in both academia and industry, in recent years. The mold region is one of the most critical parts of the C.C. process, in which the transport phenomena associated with this region can significantly affect the quality of the final products. Thus, proper control of fluid flows within this region can be expected to greatly decrease both internal and surface defects such as Oscillation Marks (OM), inclusion entrapment, and Mold Powder Entrapment (MPE). In the casting process, the fluid flow in the mold region can be affected by a number of variables, such as; the flow control system (stopper rod or slide gate), nozzle geometry, SEN (Submerged Entry Nozzle) depth, casting speed, mold dimensions, gas injection, and the application of electromagnetic fields. One of the most influential and easily-changed fluid flows are the jets of steel issuing from the SEN. Nozzle geometries are variable, consisting of a number of exit ports, different port angles, and/or port sizes, the bottom shape of the nozzle, and the SEN immersion depth (Thomas, 2001). The SEN characteristics can markedly affect meniscus surface velocities, surface level profiles, and turbulence levels that can vary in terms of the frequency and the magnitude of their fluctuations."

"The main purpose of geometallurgy is to develop a model to predict the variability in the mineral processing performance within the ore body. Geometallurgical tests used for developing such a model need to be fast, practical and inexpensive and include as an input data relevant and measureable geological parameters like elemental grades, mineral grades and grain size. Important in each geometallurgical program is to define the number of samples needed to be sent for geometallurgical testing to enable reliable metallurgical forecast. This is, however, a complicated question that does not have a generic answer.To study the question on sampling a simulation environment was built including a synthetic ore body and sampling & assaying module. A synthetic Kiruna type iron oxide - apatite deposit was established based on case studies of Malmberget ore. The synthetic ore body includes alike variability in rock types, modal mineralogy, chemical composition, density and mineral textures as its real life counterpart. The synthetic ore body was virtually sampled with different sampling densities for a Davis tube testing, a geometallurgical test characterising response in magnetic separation. Based on the test results a forecast for the processing of the whole ore body was created. The forecasted parameters included concentrate tonnages, iron recovery and concentrate quality in terms of iron, phosphorous and silica contents.The study shows that the number of samples required for forecasting different geometallurgical parameters varies. Reliable estimates on iron recovery and concentrate mass pull can be made with about 5-10 representative samples by geometallurgical ore type. However, when the concentrate quality in terms of impurities needs to be forecasted, the sample number is more than 20 times higher. This is due to variation in mineral liberation and shows the importance of developing techniques to collect qualitative information on mineral and ore textures in geometallurgy."

"Cominco's Polaris Mine is an underground lead/zinc operation located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian High Arctic. Polaris is the world's most northerly base metal mine, situated at about latitude 75°N and longitude 97°W (Fig. 1). The closest community is Resolute Bay about 100 km to the southeast.During the construction and development phase Cominco adopted a unique scheme to save time and money. Many facilities including concentrator, powerhouse, shops and warehouse were built on a barge in southern Canada. The barge was towed 4800 km to the site in August 1981. Production at Polaris began in November 1981. The current mining rate is 1 million tonnes per year. The mine employs 250 people with about 190 on site at any time.GeologyThe deposit is a Mississippi Valley type orebody and lies near the top of the Ordovician Thumb Mountain Formation. Ore minerals consist of sphalerite and galena with the gangue being predominantly dolomite with calcite and marcasite. The orebody is situated completely within permafrost, consequently the voids frequently found in the ore are filled with ice. The orebody strikes north-south, dips approximately twenty degrees to the east and takes up an area about 400 m wide by 700 m long. The upper portion of the orebody (60 m to 150 m below surface) lies in an area called the Panhandle Zone. The deeper portion of the orebody known as the Keel Zone extends to 300 m below surface (Fig. 2). The deposit is strongly zoned with a high grade zinc/lead and iron-rich tabular core overlain and underlain by vein, stringer and breccia mineralization. The ore reserves at January 1991 were 14.6 million tonnes at 3.6% Pb, 13.7% Zn, 3.2% Fe, after producing 8 million tonnes at 3.9% Pb and 14.2% Zn since November 1981"

"Hydrometallurgy of copper ores typically involve acid leaching followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). EW is the final purification stage in which a voltage is applied across two electrodes causing the copper ions to reduce and deposit on the cathode. Applied voltages are near 2 volts with current densities around 300 amps/m2. In this study, research was undertaken to decrease the energy consumed in the EW process. To do this, various cell designs were constructed and tested in which a membrane was used to separate the cathode and anode compartments with concentrated solution from SX serving as catholyte and raffinate from SX serving as anolyte. Therefore, copper in the concentrated solution would be deposited on the cathode while ferrous in the raffinate would be oxidized to ferric at the anode. Because it is assumed that ferric acid leaching is used, resulting ferric would be recycled to the leaching process. A positive side effect of the envisioned process would be the elimination of oxygen evolution at the anode and thus the prevention of acid-misting. After a cell design was selected, it was used to test a number of variables: flowrate, concentration, temperature, ion-exchange membrane, and applied voltage. Following experiments in which variable ranges were determined, statistical modeling was conducted using STATEASE software. Optimal results indicate the voltage can be decreased to 1.5-1.7 volts with current densities of 300-400 amps/m2. Significant reduction in the energy consumption was accomplished by reducing the applied voltage. Furthermore, current efficiencies and copper production rates was increased by application of the membrane.INTRODUCTIONLeaching of copper ores is achieved using mostly sulfuric acid. "INTRODUCTIONThe Upper Canada Mine is located at Dobie, approximately ten miles east of Kirkland Lake, Ontario.The mill contains Upper Canada's cyanide circuit and Upper Beaver's flotation circuit. The combined capacity is 590 tons per day consisting of 415 t.p.d. of Upper Canada gold ore and 175 t.p.d. of Upper Beaver copper-gold ore.The Upper Beaver ore is trucked five miles to the Upper Canada mine site.Crushing:The crushing circuit consists of primary, secondary and tertiary crushing employing one C .A. C. 15 in. x 24 in. Superior jaw crusher, one 4 ft. x 8 ft. Tyler-Niagara double deck screen, one 3 ft. Symons standard cone crusher and one 3 ft. Symons shorthead cone crusher.The -2 in. product from the jaw crusher is fed to the double deck screen. The+ 5/ 8 in. passes over the top deck to the 3 ft. standard cone crusher; the+ 3/ 16 in. material passes over the lower deck to the shorthead cone crusher. The - 3 / 16 in. material pas sing through the lower deck of screens is the product to the mill.The screens used prior to the installation of rubber screen cloths were: one 4 ft. x 4 ft. section with 3/ 4 in. square openings and one 4 ft. x 4 ft. section with 5/ 8 in. square openings on the top deck; two 4 ft. x 4 ft. sections with openings of 3/16 in. x 4 1/2 in. slot on the lower deck. The fine screens were positioned so that the 4 1/ 2 in. slots were parallel to the flow of feed.The crushing circuit is operated on a three shift per day basis by one operator per shift."

Pumpable, two-component resins for anchoring rock bolts provides significant advantages over traditional cartridge resin and cement grout systems where fast and easily adaptable support is required for difficult ground conditions. Cartridge resin anchoring with rock bolts is often ineffective in oversized, fractured and washed-out holes. Cement grouting of cable bolts is frequently plagued with QA and QC issues related to the grouting process. Installation of cable bolts with resin injection techniques is routinely completed in cycle allowing blasting immediately after cable bolting. Xstrata Nickel has evaluated the Minova Resin Injection System since 2007. The Nickel Rim Mine and partner Minova have tested and validated the Resin Injection process for bolting procedures including Hollow Fiberglass Bolts, Rebar, Modified Cone Bolts and Cable Bolts. The resin injection process is adaptable to most bolting processes and equipment. Currently, Nickel Rim Mine use 2 resin injection products with different set times to grout deep cable bolts and development support in highly variable ground conditions. The product predictability and adaptability in application along with a high crew acceptance continues to make this support process part of an adaptable ground support system. Product consistency and quality significantly reduce the quality control concerns for ground support in highly variable ground conditions.

An autonomous spray application system for a structural Thin Spray-on Liner (TSL) is targeting productivity and safety on underground coal continuous miners by potentially replacing steel mesh, and has broader applications as surface support and confinement in metalliferous mines and civil tunnelling. Polymer chemistry, coating formulation, geotechnical assessment and the autonomous application system are being developed as an integrated package as part of a continuous miner automation project. This polymer-based TSL system has significant benefits over conventional steel mesh skin confinement, including being more automatable by spray application, providing complete skin confinement and active skin reinforcement as a fast-curing composite with substrate, and having effective fire retardant properties for the polymer and the underlying coal. This paper presents a preliminary assessment of distance sensing systems that would enable autonomous adaptation of a nominal spray path to spray a consistent thickness of TSL (nominally 5mm) over an irregular topography. Two alternate sensors are assessed; firstly, a 2D LIDAR mounted on a linear axis is used to produce a 3D surface profile for generating an adapted spray path; and secondly, a robot end-effector-mounted ultrasonic sensor is assessed for wall following techniques to dynamically adapt a nominal spray path.

Due to the increasing worldwide demand for raw materials and the resulting rise in commodity prices more expensive processing that is able to utilize complex ores becomes economically viable. This and increasing ecological awareness is why the interest in recycling and urban mining is steadily growing in Germany. In addition to that; landfills do also contain elements, which were not targeted over the period, when they were being accumulated. Examples are rare earths, indium, gallium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium and tellurium. Also copper, zinc and lead, the target components of ancient mining, can be obtained due to more effective processing and smelting technologies. Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, entitled "r³ ? Strategic Metals and Minerals ? Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency" also indicates the high level of strategic interest. It is against this background that the research project "Exploitation of the Raw Material Potential of Mining and Metallurgical Tips in Respect of Sustainability as Exemplified in the West Harz Mountains (ROBEHA)" has been implemented. A major concern of this project is the possible transfer of results to landfills in other areas. Therefore the development of an expert system based on the innovative processing methods and a method manual for urban mining are the central components of the investigation. This will provide an important contribution to the cost optimization of ensuing urban mining projects. To ensure the success of landfill mining projects it is necessary to record the composition and quality of the deposits accurately. Also the environmental impact caused by landfill mining and changes in the natural and cultural landscape will be considered in a multicriteria evaluation method. Depending on their origin the tips are divided into the categories mining, processing, and smelting. The content of a landfill and thus the economic potential in terms of urban mining is dependent on the type and composition of the deposits (host rock, gangue, and ore mineral), the available processing and smelting technology, and the target components at the time of mining. Zinc, for example, was not been processed until the 19th century, when it gained attention as being material of economic importance. After such knowledge about a landfill is obtained the decision for further investigations can be made. For a total of 158 landfills in the Harz Mountains, both the volume and the approximate contents of copper, zinc, and lead has been estimated for the different types of tips within past research projects. Based on the prices of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and a euro/dollar exchange rate of 0.76 (as of 03/05/2012) and assuming a minimum density of ? ? 1.5 t/m³ a average value of 1.6 billion ? in copper, zinc, and lead can be obtained. "ANY DISCUSSION of energy today is incomplete without consideration of nuclear energy. In the Maritimes, with plentiful supplies of coal, with relatively easy availabilty of imported oil brought in to the deepwater terminals, with future sources of large supplies of oil and gas anticipated from under our neighbouring continental shelf, and with the Fundy tides, you may question why nuclear energy should be considered. What follows may not give you a specific answer to that question, but it may provide a basis for better understanding. Energy from the sun, from hydraulic sources and from combustion has been available to man from prehistoric times, for thousands of years, but the most sophisticated source of energy, the actual conversion of matter into energy by man, has been developed entirely within the last one-third century, since the discovery of fission in 1939, and the application to generation of electric power has all been done within a generation or less. The pressure of military needs during and after the second world war was largely responsible for the speed of initial development, by funding and focussing the effort needed to develop the basic technology, and in particular materials. The U.S. defence program yielded, for example, the large-scale isotope separation processes for fissile U'35 and for heavy water. The nuclear submarine program yielded zircaloy, a key structural material for the core of the Canadian Candu type reactor."

Lead is an ancient metal. The alchemists related it to the planet Saturn. It was largely obtained by smelting galena which generally contains small quantities of silver. That is why the metallurgy of lead was closely related to that of silver and in some cases the ore was treated only for its silver content. It was also known during the Roman time that lead vapors were toxic. Lead has been produced exclusively by pryrometallurgical methods. Lead refining is a complex process because of the presence of deleterious impurities such as arsenic, antimony, and bismuth. In the nineteenth century lead played an important role as a material of construction in the manufacture of sulfuric acid. In the twentieth century tetraethyl lead was used exclusively as an anti-knock reagent. In recent years lead is mainly used for making batteries.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposures are a serious occupational health hazard in underground mines. While the complex nature of DPM makes direct analysis difficult, its primary component, elemental carbon (EC), can be used as surrogate. The near real-time FLIR Airtec monitor measures EC mass based on laser extinction. It was developed for use in underground metal/non-metal mines, and calibrated to the NIOSH Method 5040. Its effectiveness has not been demonstrated in coal mines, however, where coal-sourced EC could produce analytical interference. To gain preliminary insights regarding the Airtec’s performance in the presence of coal dust, experiments were conducted in a controlled laboratory chamber. The Airtec EC results consistently underestimated Method 5040 EC for both respirable-sized and submicron coal dusts. While underestimation of coal-sourced EC bodes well for limiting coal interference for DPM measurement, one key reason for the observed trend was non-uniform coal particle deposition on the Airtec filter. This may be problematic in coal mines where DPM and coal dust occur together in the instance that DPM deposition is also non-uniform. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard, and underground miners have the potential for relatively high exposures due to their work in confined environments with large diesel equipment (NIOSH, 2011). DPM is heterogenous and complex in terms of its chemical composition (Birch & Cary, 1996; Noll et al., 2006), but elemental (EC) and total carbon (TC) are often used as analytical surrogates (Birch & Noll, 2004; Noll et al, 2015). EC is the solid “soot” component of DPM, whereas TC also includes particulate organic carbon (OC) (Noll et al., 2007). EC and OC can be measured in filter samples using the standard NIOSH Method 5040 (NIOSH, 2003), and summed to obtain TC. In US mines, TC has been adopted as the analytical surrogate for DPM in regulatory activities. In metal/non-metal mines, personal exposures are limited under 30 CFR Part 57. In coal mines, limitations are made on emissions from each piece of equipment (30 CFR Part 72) rather than for personal exposures. This is because coal dust has the potential to interfere with TC measurements in personal samples. In some other countries, and for non-regulatory purposes in the US, EC is also commonly used as a surrogate for DPM in mine monitoring applications [e.g., see AIOSH, 2013). EC generally exhibits a linear correlation with TC (Birch & Cary, 1996; Noll et al., 2006 and 2007) but unlike TC measurements, which are analytically intensive, EC can be determined more simply using a laser absorption/extinction principle on filter samples (Noll et al., 2013)."

The paper is a historical cross-section through a 28-year period of operation of the direct-to-blister Flash Smelting Furnace in the KGHM Glogów Copper Plant. It presents the origin of the furnace as well as the path of numerous changes and modifications both in technology and process introduced in the furnace in response to the production and cost-reduction challenges. The authors provide justification of the statement that continuous improvement of the "Polish" Flash Smelting Furnace has ranked it among the most modem smelting units in the world.

From 1999 to 2008 rock related accidents accounted for 75 fatalities, nearly 6,000 injuries and almost 14,000 incidents (Pappas and Mark, 2011). Clearly this shows that rock related safety on coal mines remains a serious issue and more effort is needed to address this hazard. This paper reviews support design considerations and monitoring needed to improve rock related safety in room and pillar coal mines in the USA. From the present study design considerations continue to evolve and improvements in technology and a better understanding of failure mechanisms and methods to prevent these failures from occurring are in place. At first glance, the design of safe and efficient underground openings appears simple until the designer begins to realize the complexities and variability of geometries, geology, loading and stress influences, support designs and other factors such as corrosion and economics. Ultimately the goal of all designs is to ensure that it can be completed safely, last for the duration of the design life and it is economically feasible.

Based on the deep burial depth of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields, Anhui Province, China, this paper puts forward the concept of partitioning of coal deposits according to occurrence conditions. This process is controlled by tectonic forces. The classification scheme of coal deposits exploration types is presented according to occurrence and mining conditions of coal deposits as viewed from the perspective of deep coal exploration properties. The principles underlying geological exploration services for the resources development are incorporated. There are six exploration types of coal deposits in the Huainan and Huaibei coalfields. Exploration models tailored to different types of exploration have been established and exploration strategies corresponding to different exploration models have been proposed. Steady-state temperature must be measured for the deep heat-harm type of coal deposit. The sealing coring of mine gas samples should be performed for the high mine gas type of coal deposit. For coal deposits with complex structures, such as those located beneath nappes, coal-controlling structural styles must be performed. Existing data on shallow districts are very important to the research of folds and fault-block types of coal deposits beneath and peripheral to old and existing coal mine areas. For the types of fault-block coal deposits hidden by thick Cenozoic cover, particular attention must be paid to comprehensive use of research on regional coal occurrence law and geophysical methods. The present work promotes the exploration level of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields to best meet the need for sustainable development of the coal industry.
