Welding is playing an important role in the manufacture of construction equipment as used in the mining industry. It provides design possibilities which are unique to this method of manufacture, and normally makes possible lighter weight but stronger products, which can be a definite advantage to a user. Welding is an industry that has experienced major developments over the past decade, all of which have improved our capability to make better welds and make them more economically. International Harvester Company has been introducing these newer welding methods into its manufacturing plants, particularly those producing construction equipment, just as fast as their value has been proven. This paper discusses how modern welding methods are contributing to the manufacture of strip mining equipment.

GOLGOHAR Mining & Industrial Co., with annual production of 16 million tons, is one of the largest pelletizing and iron ore supplier in Iran that recently this year, because of using mineral processing techniques and extraction of ore body positioning between the metamorphic rocks, about 150 million tons of dry tailings has been created as a result of concentrate production. On the other hand, many environmental issues such as groundwater pollution have been developed by sulfide and silicate gangue minerals, which containing heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic. In this study, a new product with high added value has been introduced for the company by identification and extraction of industrial minerals in dry tailings. Also, by removing large masses of dry tailings, environmental pollution sources were gradually eliminated. This method can be used as a modern waste management approach in the world.

"Most of the secondary ZnO contains fluorine (F) in large quantities. Serious troubles at the zinc electrowinning are occurred by the cathode corrosion caused by F, therefore we developed iron compounds as F-adsorbents used in zinc sulfate solution. The iron compounds can be reused repeatedly as F-adsorbents because they can adsorb/desorb F alternatively depending on the pH. Moreover, if the adsorptive capacity decreases, we can dissolve and re-synthesize them easily. In this paper, results of the experimental process which consists of five steps (leaching, F removal, Cl removal, purification and electrowinning) to produce high purity electrolytic zinc from the secondary ZnO are reported. INTRODUCTIONThe recycle material for zinc, secondary ZnO, contains large amounts of fluorine (F) and chlorine (Cl) which are halogen elements, compared with calcine obtained by roasting of zinc sulfide concentrate. The halogen elements cause adverse effects in the zinc electrowinning process and particularly F causes corrosion of aluminum cathode plates and eventually sticking of electrodeposited zinc and therefore, F concentration in the electrolyte is controlled to less than approximately 20 mg/L. There are several methods to remove F from secondary ZnO, such as leaching with Na2CO3 or NaOH solution [1-2], vaporizing in a rotary kiln by roasting at 1000 to 1200 degrees C [3-4]. However, up to the moment, there has been no effective method for the removal of F from zinc electrolyte and it has been a big obstacle in treatment of secondary ZnO in electrowining of zinc.The authors, therefore, developed an iron compound used as an adsorbent of F in the zinc sulfate solution [5-8]. This iron compound is Akaganeite that has a crystalline structure of ß-FeOOH. Akaganeite is synthesized by neutralization of FeCl3 solution containing a small amount of SO4 2- with Na2CO3. When this iron compound is immersed into weak acidified zinc sulfate solution, F in the solution is adsorbed. F adsorbed in the iron compound is removed by immersing in weak alkaline solution and the iron compound can be reused as F adsorbent."

The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited operates five underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin in the northern part of the Province of Ontario. Four of the mines, the Frood-Stobie, Creigh-ton, Murray and Garson, are located on the south range of the basin with-in a radius of IO miles of the centre of the city of Sudbury. The fifth mine, Levack, is on the north range about 30 miles northwest of the city. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. In 1960 the total ore production was in excess of 16 mil-lion tons, 95 per cent of which was produced from the five underground mines and the balance from the Frood-Stobie Open Pit. Mining at this open pit is nearing completion and underground production has been expanded to replace the open pit tonnage.

"The results being presented in this paper are those obtained during 1996 on a drilling automation project at Stobie mine. This project has successfully demonstrated that the remote operation of multiple drills (by a single driller) from surface using Tamrock Data Solo 1000 Sixty drillrigs is technically feasible and can potentially bring significant rewards in terms of productivity and work environment improvements, as well as labour and maintenance savings. BackgroundThe ObjectiveThis paper is an update of a previous report on remote drilling research at Stobie mine. Enabled by the communications system installed at the mine, the ability to remotely control underground equipment from surface has been demonstrated (Poole et al., 1996). This paper discusses the needs and process required to carry this concept to consolidate the operation of multiple machines under a single operator.The TeamThe team assembled to develop and implement the automation and the communi-cations extensions needed to allow the multiple machines’ operation from the surface by one operator included the following:INCO Mines Research supplied the project management and original project initiative. The primary purpose was to prove the advantages of savings associated with the driller not being required to travel to the underground drill location coupled with the savings associated with one-man, multiple-machine techniques.Tamrock EJC supplied the Data Solo 1000 Sixty drills and the Tamrock specific machine-based custom software. The drills were produced in Finland with no provision for remote operation of the drill from other than the umbilical attached local console.Automated Mining Systems supplied the modifications to the drill communications equipment to allow the machine communications to become broadband compatible. As well, Automated Mining Systems also supplied the hardware necessary to be able to remotely control the portable video camera, as well as the data logging equipment.Stobie Mine personnel were made available to test the function and then integrate the concept of remote control drilling into the Stobie operations."

The Department of Mines as at present constituted has evolved from the organization which came into existence following the passage of the Geology and Mines Act by the Dominion Parliament in 1907. At the outset, it may be said that it is not a function of the Department of Mines, nor of any of its branches, to administer the mining rights vested in the Crown. The title to Crown lands in the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia ( with the exception of certain specified areas, such as Indian Reserves, Ordnance Lands, the Railway Belt of British Columbia, and the Peace River Black) is vested in the respective provincial governments ; the title to Crown Lands in the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and in the Canadian Arctic, is vested in the Dominion Government, and matters pertaining thereto are (with a few exceptions) administered by the Department of the Interior, Ottawa. Nor are statistics of mineral production at present collected and published by the Department of Mines. This function did belong to the Geological Survey from 1886 to 1906, and to the Mines Branch from 1907 to 1920; but commencing with 192l this duty was transferred to the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, consequent upon the decision of Government to place the collection of all statistics under the direction of one officer.

"The continued increase of the automobile production leads to a higher platinum, palladium and rhodium (PGM) demand. Due to the high value of the PGMs the recycle of these metals from automotive catalysts is of special interest. Pyrometallurgical processes, which are only focused on the PGMs, represent the state of the art of automotive catalysts recovery. However, hydrometallurgical recycling processes offer additional recovery of other valuable metals and compounds. The method presented in this paper is based on a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the valuable metal fraction which can be precipitated afterwards.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum and the corresponding metals from the PGM group, especially palladium and rhodium are well known as catalytic active materials. They support chemical reactions which are inhibited. This effect is used to decrease the amount of harmful compounds like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides in automotive exhaust gases. The generation of these toxic substances is based on incomplete combustion, which in turn is caused by non-ideal conditions in the combustion chamber. Catalytic converters minimize the harmful compounds by supporting the following Reactions 1 – 3 (Votsmeier et al., 2009).CO + ½ O2 ? CO2 (1)CnHm + (n + ¼ m) O2 ? n CO2 + ½ m H2O (2)2 NO + 2 CO ? N2 + 2 CO2 (3)Platinum and palladium are very effective for the oxidation (Reactions 1 and 2), while rhodium supports the decomposition of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide (Votsmeier et al., 2009). The classical three way catalyst was a platinum – rhodium combination with a Pt:Rh ratio of 5:1 (Hagelüken et al., 2005). Today the platinum, palladium and rhodium ratio is highly variable and strongly depends on the engine type as well as on the car producer. Diesel engines are operated with a super stoichiometric air addition in comparison to spark ignition systems. Therefore the exhaust gas composition and off gas temperature is different. Based on the high oxygen amount, diesel engines produce less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons but more nitrogen oxide in contrast to gasoline engines. This leads to various requirements for the catalytic converters."

"THE need for continuing education has been recognized only in fairly recent years as a major concern of the engineering profession. Formerly, it was acknowledged that engineers were required, at least informally, to follow the professional literature and to give some attention to new technical and technological developments. However, those relaxed days, when progress could be followed in a casual or incidental evening of reading, have disappeared in these days of mushrooming information. The engineer is now in the position of the man trying to control the flow from a fire hydrant with a child's pail. Our problem is that of developing an effective flow system -be it trough, hose, pipe or a bigger pail.The first step in achieving an effective means for continuing the education process is to realize that the need for the system is really an outgrowth of an increasingly sophisticated society. It is merely one more symptom of that society; others would• include the facts that new engineering graduates are more highly trained than those of several years ago, that graduate schools are now the norm and that even some fairly recent technologies are becoming outdated. There-fore, let us examine the education-al systems from which the bulk of the increasing sophistication has grown."

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. L’objectif est d'identifier la contribution aux pertes de métal et à la dilution du minerai des diverses étapes de l'évaluation et de l'exploitation du gisement. La catégorie actuelle des réserves possibles sera remplacée par celle des ""minéralisations inférées"". Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. La proposition d'utiliser les marges d'erreur des estimes au niveau de confiance de90%pour caractériser les estimations se situe dans une plus longue perspective. "Rougher flotation in sulfide ore applications is typically performed using conventional flotation machines. The trend over the last 100 years has been for these cells to become larger in volume with cells reaching sizes of 600 m3 and in some cases even larger. The associated foundation loadings, transport and installation requirements along with building size have also increased. In an economic environment where projects must be executed with dwindling capital supply, bigger is not always better. More recently, industry is being challenged to identify new technology that allows for improved flowsheets and financial returns through efficiency gains. To meet this challenge, a novel high-intensity two-stage flotation system known as the StackCell™ was tested to potentially achieve installation volume and required retention time gains when compared to conventional flotation circuits. The results from on-site pilot scale work conducted on typical copper concentrator rougher flotation feed showed retention time gains on the order of 6 to 9 times when compared with conventional flotation equipment. This finding has the potential of reducing capital demands for rougher flotation circuit designs when incorporating the StackCell. The results from test work will be discussed in this paper showing comparative test data generated with a Denver bench batch test, pilot StackCell and large conventional cells, all receiving the same feed.INTRODUCTION Over the last few years, a number of flotation devices have been described as two-stage or multi-stage flotation units. The idea behind multi-stage flotation devices is that flotation performance can be improved by utilizing cells with multiple specialized units in series, but not all units of the same type, as is practiced in trains of multiple tank cells or columns. Instead, each unit is specially designed to provide the optimized fluid environment for each stage of the sequential flotation process. This idea has been proposed based on a study of the fundamentals of the flotation process, and the realization that the process consists of discrete sequential processes, that are each optimized with dissimilar process conditions (Finch et al, 1995), (Zhou, 1996). Instead of executing each step simultaneously in a homogeneous fluid environment, where the conditions would be a compromise between particle collection and froth recovery, the multi-stage flotation unit operates in a set of segregated process environments, each with a set of conditions optimized for that step."

The recrystallization and texture evolution of AZ31 sheets obtained through two stages was investigated at different stages of post-rolling annealing. The specimens were rolled at the temperature of 100? and at a fast speed of 1000m/min and low speed of 15m/min with a reduction of 30% in one pass. The results show thatAZ31B sheets rolled at 15 m/min and 100 °C has fractured for reductions of more than 30% per pass. However, by increasing the rolling speed to 1000 m/min the rollability was improved significantly and the material can be rolled to reductions of more than 70% per pass. The high speed and heavily deformed materials are fully recrystallized even at 100 °C.

Although doubt has been expressed many times as to who first brought self-contained breathing apparatus to this side of the Atlantic, there is none whatever that the first organized station was established at Glace Bay, N .S., by the Dominion Coal Company, in 1907. This station was started with 20 sets of 1907 "Draeger" apparatus and all necessary station equipment and supplies. After the fire at No. 1 pit, Sydney Mines, in 1908, the Nova Scotia Steel Company installed 15 sets of "Draeger" and sup-plies, which were housed in a rescue car (a converted pull-man.) In 1909 or '10 a fire occurred at the Back Pit, Stellarton, where the apparatus from Glace Bay was used, and subsequently the Acadia Company erected a station and in-stalled 10 sets of "Securitas" apparatus. In 1912 the station at New Waterford was opened and equipped with "Draeger," and the same year the station at Springhill was built and equipped with the same type. Sometime during past years the Nova Scotia Steel Company acquired a couple of "Proto" machines, and after the explosion at the Allan shaft in 1918 the Acadia Coal Company added some "Gibbs" to their station. From this it will be seen that when the coal-fields were organized under the British Empire Steel Corporation the equipment was rather mixed, therefore steps were taken by the executive to stanardize the whole of the rescue and recovery work.

The Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan and Alberta is an exceptionally rich metallogenic region, hosting more than 2.8 B lb U3O8, of which over 927 M lb U3O8 have been mined out since extraction first started in the late 1970’s. A detailed compilation of several empirical features of 85 deposits located within the basin was conducted in order to understand the distribution and variability of the geological characteristics of the mineralization and its associated alteration. A new empirical classification was devised based on four parameters: 1) geometry of the mineralization (dimensions and relation to the unconformity surface), 2) size, grade and metallurgical complexity of the mineralization, 3) lithostructural setting, and 4) extent and nature of associated alteration haloes. This compilation defines the footprint characteristics of the Athabasca Basin deposits, which guides decision-making processes from early exploration and discovery to resource expansion and extraction.

The feasibility of chloride leaching processes depends on interfacing them with cost-effective HCl regeneration technologies. This paper summarizes the most important findings of research conducted in the past 3 years concerned with a novel process to regenerate high-strength HCl from concentrated CaCl2 solutions at temperatures below 100°C, via reaction of CaCl2 with H2SO4 resulting in the formation of calcium sulfate phases (gypsum, a-hemihydrate or anhydrite). From constant supersaturation semi-batch experiments in pure solution it was found that the crystal growth rate of hemihydrate, and hence the particle size, was influenced by the rate of reagent (Ca2+, SO4 2-) supply to the reactor. Additionally, growth studies of DH in presence of impurities (K+, Mg2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Fe2+/3+, Al3+, La3+, Y3+, F- and PO4 3-) showed that specifically Sr2+ and PO4 3- are taken up during crystal growth. Furthermore, it was found that decreasing water activity (via different HCl/CaCl2 concentrations) and increasing temperature reduce the metastable life-time of DH and HH by increasing the phase transformation speed. The DH/HH transformation was identified to be dissolution-precipitation based, while HH to AH is a topochemical process. Finally, continuous experiments on bench scale are underway to confirm the feasibility of the process to obtain super-azeotropic strength HCl with up to 9 mol/L (~30wt.%) from 5 mol/L CaCl2 (~40wt.%) solution.

ABSTRACT: A prototype test dipper (at 1/20th volume and a geometric operating scale of 2.85) was compared during field trials against a conventional dipper with the same tare weight using the same test shovel. Both dippers followed similar dig trajectories, invoked by the shovel operator. A Microsoft® Visual Basic-embedded spreadsheet was used to interpret qualitative visual and quantitative numerical loading data collected on the hoist and crowd dig response. Overall the concept dipper, even with a 50% greater capacity, provided indications of a smoother dig cycle with lower peak hoist loading events and a lower energy per unit excavated.

"Cyanide is a leaching agent for precious metals commonly used in gold ore processing. Cyanide exists in various forms (including free, complexed as weak or strong complexes, and as ions such as cyanate and thiocyanate), so its detection, speciation and analysis in processing or environmental samples can be complex. This paper will review best practices for cyanide sampling and preservation in the field, interferences and pretreatment methods required prior to sample analysis and analytical methods that are used for cyanide species. Titrimetric, flow injection ligand exchange, spectrophotometric, colorimetric, potentiometric, amperometric, and chromatography techniques will be discussed and their chemistries, detection limits, advantages and limitations will be described.INTRODUCTION Cyanide is well known to be an extremely toxic species. Accurate cyanide measurement in effluent from mines is critical from an environmental perspective. Its measurement is also an important control parameter in the recovery of gold using cyanidation. Cyanide chemistry is diverse and complex, and cyanide analysis can be challenging as a result of and because of limitations in understanding of analytical methods. Various chemical mechanisms can form or destroy cyanide, and the sample matrix or preservation chemicals can also affect analytical results. These interferences make the collection of reliable cyanide measurements challenging and can start as soon as the sample is collected, during laboratory pre-treatment and during analysis. This paper reviews different methods of cyanide measurement. "In this study, the vapour phase reduction of titanium tetrachloride conforms to the traditional Kroll chemistry, but employs argon as an inert carrier gas and requires a higher reaction temperature of 1150°C to 1250°C. A vapour phase reaction is advantageous because titanium is the only condensed phase present, and the metal can be collected free of magnesium or magnesium chloride, in marked contrast to the titanium sponge produced by the conventional Kroll process. The yield of metallic titanium from the reaction was determined as magnesium additions ranged from 36% to 168% of the stoichiometric requirement. Yields of over 99% were obtained when an excess of magnesium was present. Although the collection efficiency was low, metallic titanium was collected at the reaction site, where all other species were present as vapours. Magnesium and chlorine concentrations in the collected titanium were less than 0.3%.IntroductionA proposed method (Curlook, 1987) for titanium production has been investigated as an alternative to the conventional Kroll process (Kroll, 1940). The advantages of the new process include a simplified means of recovering the product metal, and a potential for lower overall energy consumption and greater product purity. A higher reaction temperature for the reduction of titanium tetrachloride results in a vapour phase reaction, rather than the conventional liquid phase reaction. Magnesia carbon bricks are commonly used in BOFs and are generally pre-heated before the BOF goes into service. Owing to very stringent emission regulations, the BOF pre-heating process need to be controlled and optimized so that, the emission standards are met. One of the major concerns in organic emissions are its stringent limits on emission rates and total volatile emissions. In the present work, an attempt has been made to integrate CFD and Thermodynamic models to predict the emission rate of volatile organics during the pre-heating process. A one dimensional heat transfer model was developed using visual basic and then integrated with thermodynamics calculations using FactSage 6.4. The parameters that affected organic emissions were the pre heating procedure, gas composition of the burner, heating rate and type of the burner. Typical composition of MgO-C bricks and binder materials were obtained from literature and vendor data sheets. Chemical reactions between organic materials, refractory and burner gasses were considered. The model predictions indicated that certain burner conditions could destroy all organics before it exits the vessel while other conditions needed the use of an after burner at the mouth of the vessel. The model was also able to predict the organic emission rates based on the chosen pre-heating profile. This kind of predictive model will be very useful for the steel industry and enable them to justify permit limit applications and stick to the limits by fine tuning their pre-heating process.

The general recycling process of tungsten scrap to produce tungsten raw materials (tungstic acid, ammonium paratungstate (APT) and WO3) have been carried out by the oxidation, milling, sodium-fusion, dissolution, and extraction processes. Many studies on the high temperature oxidation of tungsten scrap have investigated various aspects such as swelling kinetics, fracture resistance, and the effect of alloying composition. However, the accelerating factors on the scrap oxidation rate during oxidation were not considered here. In general, oxidized products were fused with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide to produce Na2WO4. Later in the process, solid Na2WO4 was dissolved in water. This process required considerable reaction time and was a costly process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to increase the solubility of solid oxidized products to produce Na2WO4 solution by hydrothermal reflux method. Na2WO4 solution was used to produce CaWO4 and H2WO4 by general chemical reactions with calcium chloride and hydrochloric acid. Ammonia solution was also added to the tungstic acid to produce APT. In this study, the effect of ammonia addition on the APT precipitation process was investigated in detail.

Introduction Numerous papers have been written dealing with the construction and functions of, and the environmental conditions created by, Diesel locomotives. Therefore, it is not my intention to attempt to deal with these phases of Diesel transportation other than to make reference to them in ?relation to and in connection with actual operation. The rapid expansion of industry during recent years and the necessity of products being made available at competitive prices in home and world markets has made the demand for cheaper coal a very serious factor for the coal industry. This condition has meant each coal producing country looking into ways and means whereby greater productivity and reduction in cost could he achieved. Surveys made show that, in addition to face mechanization, savings, in some cases substantial, can be made in transportation. Ventilation The most efficient mines are in-variably the well ventilated ones, for it is true that, where there is good ventilation, there are usually good roads. These combined factors are very essential where Diesel locomotives are used. Good roadways and track allow speed, and good ventilation dilutes rapidly any disagreeable exhaust gases. Locomotive Development In the older types of auxiliary rope haulage, coal hauled per haul-age hand is usually very low.
