"Gold producers invest significant effort in mining, processing, and creating an intermediate gold doré product. Nonetheless, equal effort should be extended to the final handling and processing of the doré bar, and managing the high-purity gold produced at the fine-gold toll refiner. This detailed attention to bullion handling and refining provides rigor and confidence that the mine site is achieving, through fair and controlled methodology, the most appropriate value for the final product. With the above in mind, the following study explores the importance of preparing a set of site best-practices for bullion handling and specifically, detailing the peculiarities of sampling methodologies and the impact on assays.INTRODUCTION Gold and silver handling practices are common place at mine sites and refineries. The practices include but are not limited to smelting, ingot casting, weighing practices, and secure transportation. Proper handling and processing of the bullion material ensures that the mine site is achieving the true value of the final product. Various handling aspects can critically impact the perceived value of the bullion. A few of these particulars include weight tracking, scale recertification and calibration, refining and melting practices, melt temperature measurement, sampling, pouring, bar cleaning, furnace technology and crucible selection, and assaying. Nevertheless, this report discusses and focuses on the importance of proper sampling and molten-metal temperature measurement and their potential impact on the final doré bar value. Refining or re-melting operations achieve a proper measure of the precious metal content of its bullion when the sample accurately represents the whole bar. At first this task appears seemly straightforward, however, taking a representative sample can be challenging and is also one of the most important tasks for valuing gold during the settlement stage at the precious metal refinery. Various bullion sampling methodologies exist; including: dip sampling, granulation, drilling, cutting, and vacuum pin sampling. The Royal Canadian Mint (2009) indicated in their technical review of refinery operations that pin sampling is one of the best methods for cases where representative sampling and accuracy are required, e.g. to determine the payable metal content. Pin sampling consists of inserting a sealed glass vacuum tube (Figure 1) into the molten metal; when the molten metal contacts a purposely-designed weak portion of the glass, the seal breaks and the metal is suctioned into the hollow centre (Figure 2)."

"The fault under consideration follows a northerly trend past the west; side of the original settlement of Yell ow knife; which is situated 600 miles; north of Edmonton and 400 miles from the Northern Alberta Railway; terminus at Waterways; Alberta. The mining properties chiefly concerned; include the southern part of the Giant claims; on the east side of the fault; and the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims; on the west side 3 1/2 miles to the south.; Geological data were also obtained from the eastern part of the A.Y.E.; property; which lies south of the Giant claims; and from the Negus; Meg; Yellorex; and Kam properties; which are south and southeast of the ConRycon-; Demelt claims (see Frontispiece; also Fig. 5).Recognition of the major faults in the Yellowknife Bay area, including the West Bay fault, which appears to be the greatest, resulted from the work of A. W. Jolliffe (formerly of the Geological Survey of Canada) in 1935 and subsequent years. It has been stated with little exaggeration that these faults rank with the largest known steeply dipping dislocations of the earth's crust.In the winter of 1939, a mineralized shear zone named the 'Creek vein' was found on the Giant property. It was noted that the space relationship between this shear zone and a body of quartz-feldspar porphyry is roughly the same as that between the Con C-4 shear zone and a body of acid flows lying north of the Con property. Coupling this relationship with the assumption that the movement along the fault is dominantly horizontal, it was postulated that the Giant shear zone represented the faulted extension of the Con C-4 shear zone.As geological information became more extensive, certain weaknesses in this concept became apparent, and when spectacular orebodies were discovered on the Giant property in 1944 the question of possible faulted extensions became an important consideration. Consequently, in the spring of 1944, an extended investigation was undertaken, the results of which are embodied in this paper."

PILLAR extraction at the Sullivan Mine bas been in progress for over twenty-five years and bas .involved progressively larger pillars. The largest pillar blasted to date exceeds one million tons and is described in this paper. This blast is believed to be one of the largest to take place entirely under-ground. The Sullivan Mine, owned by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, is located in the southeastern corner of British Columbia on the east flank of the Purcell range overlooking the twenty-mile wide Rocky Mountain Trench (Figure 1). The orebody is a bedded replacement deposit in argillites, varying in thickness up to 300 feet, but averaging about 80 feet. Above the 3900 Level, the dip varies from nearly horizontal to 40 degrees; be-low the 3900 Level it varies from 45 to 20 degrees (Figure 2). The project implementation phase, FEL4, is generally a complex undertaking. The project has been approved for construction and the capital has been allocated. At this point the project team comes under significant pressure to meet the safety, schedule, cost, and start-up committments. For the design team the principal tasks are to finalize detailed design, complete procurement, and issue construction contracts. Design activities must be closely coordinated with equipment and material procurement. A clear engineering plan should be based on well-defined work packages to meet construction, commissioning, and startup requirements. A range of review processes by discipline, area, and third parties assure quality. Constructability, safety, and hazard reviews are performed throughout the design process. Three-dimensional models that incorporate extensive databases help to maximize efficiency and minimize errors. Well-managed projects have a clearly accountable design team, rigorous change control processes, and well-defined workflows. Key individuals from the design team participate in commissioning, operator training, and startup.

"Electrodeposited nanomaterials are increasingly implemented in advanced industrial applications in the aerospace, automotive, defence, electronic and energy sectors due to their outstanding physical, chemical and mechanical properties, including increased strength and wear resistance, and superb magnetic properties. As with the development of any class of new materials, the corrosion behaviour of these electrodeposits requires considerable attention. This presentation reviews major developments in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites over the last 20 years, with emphasis on how their intrinsically high density of intercrystalline defects does not compromise their corrosion resistance as initially expected.INTRODUCTIONOver the past 20 years there have been considerable advances in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites. In this paper, the corrosion properties of nanocrystalline nickel, cobalt, zinc, and copper and some of their alloys are reviewed with emphasis on how a reduction in grain size affects their corrosion behaviour in different environments.It is possible to synthesize nanocrystalline material with microstructural refinement down to the range of 1 to 100 nm using a large number of processing methods. There are five basic synthesis methods that can be used to classify the different techniques: vapor-phase processing, liquid-phase processing, solid-phase processing, chemical synthesis, and electrochemical synthesis. Depending on the synthesis method, different microstructures (equiaxed, textured), shapes, and forms (films, particles, bulk material) may be produced. In addition, other factors may be introduced (eg. residual porosity or amorphous phases), aside from microstructural refinement, which can contribute to the observed properties (Erb, 2010). In order to interpret and categorize the resulting microstructures, a dimensional structure modulation scheme was introduced by Siegel (1996) in which zero-dimensional nanomaterials refer to individual particles, clusters, etc. One-dimensionality results from a layered (less than 100 nm thick) structure. Two-dimensional nanomaterials are thin, layered structures containing grains (less than 100 nm) within each layer. Finally, three-dimensional nanomaterials are bulk structures with an average grain size less than 100 nm."

In gravity processing of gold-containing ore the target produced concentrate which is high gold grade primary concentrate contains a significant amount of cassiterite (SnO2). The plant attempts aiming at concentrate processing using a standard pyrometallurgical technology did not provide any positive results. The present paper is dedicated to development and testing of improved technology for pyrometallurgical processing of rich gold primary concentrate with high cassiterite content. According to material composition study primary concentrates produced at the plant contained 1.5–2.0% Au, 0.1–0.3% Ag, 55–65% SnO2, 20–25% Fe2O3, and 10–15% Fe3O4. The developed technology included alkaline nodulizing of primary concentrate mixed with sodium hydroxide and carbonate at 350–650°? with cake production. In blend nodulizing stannum and iron passed into sodium stannate (Na2SnO3) and sodium ferrate (NaFeO2) respectively. The blend of cake and fluxing agents was smelted at 1,150–1,200°? resulting in dore gold and slag production. Sodium stannate with 360°? melting point is well dissolved in slag system Na2OSiO2- B2O3-CaO. During plant tests 18.5 kg of high gold grade primary concentrate were processed, 1350 g of dore gold and 75 kg of slag were produced. Dore gold contained 16.5% Au, 0.95% Ag, 78.0% Sn, 3.1% Fe. Slag contained 12.4 g/t Au, 6.7 g/t Ag, 9.8% Sn, and 5.6% Fe. Gold recovery to target alloy was equal to 99.58 %, 87.8% of Sn passed into slag. This new technology was accepted for application at the plant.

PERUSAL of a list of present-day commercial explosives perhaps does not convey a full realization that there has been a great deal of improvement since the original dynamite was discovered nor that, in recent years, great developments have taken place in specialized explosives. This is true particularly of high-explosives for use in metalliferous mining or what is more commonly termed 'hard-rock' mining. Not many decades ago, only two or three types of explosive were avail-'able for commercial use. One was black blasting powder. Another was ordinary nitro-glycerin dynamite in various strengths. Black blasting powder remains with but very little change. Despite its ancient lineage, it is still with us as perhaps the sole explosive in use today which is almost identical in appearance, physical properties, and working ability or execution co the original. Which dynamite the story is different. Its evolution may be likened to that of the dog, nitro-glycerin as first discovered being the counterpart of the wild dog and, like it, dangerous and hard to control. The original dynamite as made by Nobel might then be considered as representing the first domesticaced species. This original dynamite, however, has been 'crossed with other bloods' until one sees now many distinct 'breeds' in the list. Present-day explosives still have the 'bark' and the 'bite', but with control and research have come many improvements; and types have been created which are specially adapted for particular kinds of work. We still have the direct descendant of Nobel's dynamite in the form of an improved nitro-glycerin dynamite. This C-I-L explosive, Polar Dynamite, is no longer the best type to use in the hunt for gold, silver, iron, and other metals. There have been developed other explosives more suitable for chat work. In Canada, such explosives are accomplishing this work effectively, not only where climatic conditions are moderate but through the rigours of our northern winters, with their sub-zero temperatures.

Compañía Minera Antamina is a polymetallic mining complex that produces copper and zinc concentrates as primary products and molybdenum and lead/bismuth/silver concentrates as by-products. In 2007, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) was contracted to increase SAG mill throughput by integrating and optimising blast fragmentation, crushing and grinding for the harder M4/M4A (CuZn) ores. Following the implementation of recommendations provided by Metso PTI, the SAG mill throughput increased from 2750tph to reach an average of 3600tph for the remainder of 2007. Due to continued application of mine to mill integration and optimisation philosophy, by 2010, the concentrator consistently exceeded the target of 4400tph while processing harder CuZn ores.

One of problems connected with the use of gold/titania-based catalyst systems is the low yield in propene oxide (up to 2 wt %). It is shown that the low propene oxide yield is due to product inhibition. New options for propene epoxidation with hydrogen and oxygen are discussed. INTRODUCTION The direct gas-phase synthesis of propene oxide (PO), by the use of molecular oxygen, is still aimed for. Agbased catalysis is in principle possible, but selectivity at present is not promising. Highly dispersed gold on titanium containing catalysts show an extraordinary selectivity in the oxidation of propene to the corresponding epoxide (> 99 %), using a combination of H2 and O2 as oxidation mixture [1]. Additional studies of the epoxidation reaction have indicated several drawbacks of the Au/TiO2 catalyst. Firstly, the low conversion (1- 2 %) obtained under typical reaction conditions (atmospheric pressure, 323 - 423 K) cannot be increased by increasing the reaction temperature, because this leads to extensive by-product formation. Secondly, the low efficiency of hydrogen (relatively large amounts of water are formed) is hard to prevent. Finally, significant deactivation of Au/TiO2 catalysts within several hours on stream has been observed. Deactivation can be almost completely prevented by using dispersed TiO2 supports, such as TiO2/SiO2 and Titanium-Silicalite-1 (TS-1) [2]. In recent literature [2,3] a hydroperoxide-like intermediate has been proposed to be responsible for the selective epoxidation. This oxidising species is said to be formed over gold and subsequently used for epoxidation over the Ti-containing support. The support is responsible for the slow desorption of PO. One of the problems for future industrial application might be the low yield in propene oxide. Furthermore, the presence of minor amounts of by-products, not detected on lab-scale catalyst testing, might complicate the separation unit in an industrial process. The reason for the low PO yield over Au/TiO2-based catalysts will be discussed in this paper. Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) and micro-flow experiments have been carried out to study PO desorption and catalyst performance, respectively. A catalytic cycle is proposed together with its consequences for the maximum yield in PO. Finally, several process and catalyst options are discussed in view of potential future industrial application.

"Pilot plants for pressure hydrometallurgy represent special design and project execution challenges. Over the past twenty years, Zeton has designed and fabricated a variety of world-class pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities, and this paper discusses design considerations and strategies related to such projects. Project execution methods are also discussed, and guidance is given for the selection of materials of construction and for the selection of appropriate pressure and temperature design points for pressure hydrometallurgical pilot equipment. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need for process similarity with future commercial operations and the realities of pilot-scale equipment.INTRODUCTIONThe process technology developer or owner and the designer/fabricator of a new pilot-plant facility are faced with some difficult technical choices even after the decision to build a dedicated plant has been taken. A pilot-plant project is usually on the critical path of a large commercial project involving investments many multiples greater than the capital cost of the pilot plant. Schedule savings in the design, manufacture, and commissioning of the pilot plant or in a rapid completion of the experimental program can be disproportionately beneficial to the overall development project. However, inappropriate shortcuts resulting in major oversights can be disproportionately problematic.A number of considerations and suggestions for both the project execution approach and the process engineering design of pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities are presented as a guide for potential owners and operators of new pilot-plant equipment and facilities."

Rockfalls are major and essentially unpredictable sources of danger, particularly along transportation routes (roads and railways). Thus, the assessment of their probability of occurrence is a major challenge for risk management. From a qualitative perspective, it is known that rockfalls occur mainly during periods of rain, snowmelt, or freeze-thaw. Nevertheless, from a quantitative perspective, these generally assumed correlations between rockfalls and their possible meteorological triggering events are often difficult to identify because i) rockfalls are too rare for the use of classical statistical analysis techniques and ii) all intensities of triggering factors do not have the same probability. In this study, we propose a new approach to investigate the correlation of rockfalls with rain, freezing periods, and strong temperature variations. This approach is tested on three French rockfall databases, the first of which exhibits an outstandingly high frequency of rockfalls (approximately 950 events over 11 years), whereas the other two databases are more typical (approximately 140 events over 11 years). These databases come from (1) the national highway RN1 on La Réunion Island, (2) a railway in the Bourgogne-Franche Comté region, and (3) a railway in the Auvergne region. Whereas a basic correlation analysis is only able to highlight an already obvious correlation in the case of the “rich” database, the newly suggested method appears to detect correlations even in the “poor” ones. Indeed, the use of this method confirms the positive correlation between rainfalls and rockfalls on La Réunion Island database. This method highlights a correlation between cumulative rainfalls and rockfalls in the Bourgogne region, and it detects a correlation between the daily minimum temperature and rockfalls in the Auvergne region. This new approach is easy to use and also serves to determine the conditional probability of rockfall function of a given meteorological factor. This approach will help to optimize risk management in the studied areas based on their meteorological conditions. Nevertheless, even if some rockfalls are correlated to meteorological factors, other seems to occur independently of these factors, which highlights the unpredictability of rockfall hazard.

The Committee's proposed standards establish definitions and guidelines for the reporting of Exploration Information, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in Canada and are identified as the "CIM Standards" and referred to as such hereafter in this document. To provide additional clarification to Qualified Persons (QPs), guidelines have been included with the respective definitions. The CIM Standards are applicable to all minerals including industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones. Reserve definitions for bitumen, natural gas and oil are not included in these Standards. The CIM Standards are not intended to cover mineral inventory estimates that will be reported to government agencies.

"Sensor based ore sorting is being rapidly adopted by the mining industry. The ability to boost mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the process has proven revolutionary for some operations.This paper briefly reviews the current position of ore sorting in the industry, as well as abridged results from specific operations such as Barrick, McEwen, New Gold, and two others. The paper also introduces the concept of “Profit Recovery™”, the measuring of recovery based on rock profitability rather than just metal content.IntroductionSensor based ore sorting is being rapidly adopted by the mining industry. The ability to increase mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the processing stage is proving to be revolutionary for some operations. These potential outcomes have been too invaluable to be overlooked by both producing operations and prospective projects, thus leading to a wide range of studies on ore sorting. In addition, the advent of ore sorting has also called for a new standard of recovery analysis. The answer to this is the creation of a new term and concept - Profit Recovery™.This paper evaluates the most recent results of ore sorting in the mining industry, and presents the results from five different mining operations. Additionally, this paper will discuss and evaluate the Profit Recovery™ of each of these operations. The goal of this paper is to address common concerns regarding ore sorting rejects and their actual impact on project economics.State Of The ArtOre Sorting is a sensor-based sorting and pre-concentration technology implemented before the processing stage that is used to reduce the amount of waste reporting to the mill feed. This technology can also be utilized to recover ore from previously uneconomic waste, as well as reduce the mill energy and reagent consumption (Tong, 2012). In greenfield projects, sensor-based sorting can further provide value by reducing processing capital costs. The decline of available high grade orebodies and decreasing head grades has further increased the attractiveness of pre-concentration, and subsequently ore sorting (Lessard et al., 2014).There are currently two notable types of sensor-based sorting: bulk and rock-by-rock. Bulk sorting consists of live, high tonnage sorting that can be installed on a scoop or on a conveyor belt with a diverter. Rock-by-rock is a selective sorting method that scans and sorts individual rocks on a conveyor belt, and rejects rocks using air jets or mechanical levers. Figure 1 shows a diagram for a typical air jet sorter."

"Rio Algom's Stanleigh Mine and Mill Operation Was' officially started up in August 1983. In September 1982, Rio Algom contracted Estonix International Inc. from Lively, Ontario, to develop and implement two innovative programs: (1) Work Renovation Planning, and (2) Systems Performance Training. This paper deals with the development and implementation of these two concepts relative to the plants technology from start-up to present and the exceptional results achieved. This paper discusses how a small but motivated workforce resulted in the smooth transition from startup to full production. It also deals with how these concepts were applied elsewhere in the organization which permitted a successful transition and downsizing of the over-all operation.IntroductionRio Algom Limited produces uranium in Elliot Lake, Ontario. In the late 1970s Rio Algom entered a contract with Ontario Hydro to supply uranium from its Stanleigh property, which had been idle since 1960. The mine was subsequently upgraded, and a new modem mill was designed and built, commencing operation in 1983.From then until September 1990,Rio Algom had three producing mines and mills in the Elliot Lake area. Quirke mill, with a capacity of 6350 tonnes per day, operated continuously from 1968. The Panel mill with a 3000 tonnes per day capacity, operated since 1979. Stanleigh mill continues to operate under long-term contracts, although at a production rate about 25070 lower than its rated capacity of 5000 tonnes per day.Both the Quirke and Panel mills, although not entirely similar, were conventional uranium mills utilizing crushing, grinding, leaching and ion exchange. As such, and in keeping with the traditional management style, there was a rather large mill operating workforce, which utilized a line-of-progression job classification system."

"The induration of iron ore pellets has always utilized prefired pellets to protect the pallet cars from the environment of the induration furnace. This paper presents the process used to obtain superior upper sidewalls. These heat resistant castings are used on induration pallet cars, and their life improvements by as much as 400% is a significant step towards the reduction of the prefired (or hearth layer pellets.) The benefit to the industry in the removal of the hearth layer is improved overall productivity. IntroductionThe Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates with production facilities located in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Sept Iles, Quebec. It has recently been acquired by North Limited, an Australian based resource oriented company. Prior to its acquisition, IOC has examined several methods of operational cost reductions. One of these was an examination of indurrating pallets. Pallets are composed of numerous assemblies and sub-assemblies. The examination of the upper sidewalls began as an intent to increase the operational life of the component. The anticipated net effect was to be a reduction in the overall pallet maintenance cost. All of the components and assemblies have undergone a severe scrutiny. IOC has found that the success of the project has depended upon not only the technical competency of all parties involved, but also upon the ability to share risk, to be innovative, and to find a partner with whom the development can proceed without fear and yet with accountability. IOC has found in Cast Steel Products (CSP) such a partner in the field of pallet development. This paper will undertake to explore the progression into the arena of partnering between IOC and CSP. CSP and IOC met in the fall of 1994. The work of re-engineering the pallets began with an initial order for 36 pallets in March, 1995. The work on the upper sidewalls involved segregation of the effect of alloy development versus physical geometry development. The nature of partnering between the two companies allocated alloy development to IOC and physical geometry development to CSP, yet no advancements were made in either area without the close co-operation or the involvement of both partners."

"Sirius Minerals is a UK based fertilizer development company focused on advancing into operation its polyhalite project in North Yorkshire, England. The operation is known as the Woodsmith Mine which has an estimated 2.7 Billion Tonnes of reserves and is currently in the construction phase. DMC Mining Services was selected to carry out the construction of four shafts for the project, a production shaft of 6.75m diameter to a depth of 1594 m, a ventilation shaft of 6.75 m diameter to a depth of 1565 m, and two additional shafts to support the construction of the material transport system (the MTS and Lockwood Beck intermediate) to 360m in depth for servicing the underground conveyor network for transport of product from the mine site to the costal port facilities located at Teasside. This paper will review the status of the project to date and the innovative approaches that DMC is utilizing to ensure a safe and successful shaft sinking project. INTRODUCTION The Woodsmith Mine in North Yorkshire is a Sirius Minerals-owned deep potash and polyhalite mine located near to the hamlet of Sneatonthorpe, Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, approximately 75 km east of York. The area of interest is more than 700 km2. The £3.2 billion project is to develop the Woodsmith Mine to extract polyhalite, and a tunnel system to transport it to a materials handling facility and harbour at Teesside. The site is the world's largest and highest-grade deposit of polyhalite and is expected to produce 20 million tonnes of polyhalite, potash and POLY4 per annum, as well as create over 1,000 direct jobs and many more indirectly. It has the potential to generate over £2 billion of annual exports for the UK. As the project will require mining to be undertaken in the North York Moors National Park, many objections were raised about the mine. Sirius Minerals has gone to great lengths to ensure that the project is sensitive to the local landscape, including: mineshaft head frames that will be positioned below ground to reduce their visual impact; surface buildings will be kept to a minimum; and the entire site will be landscaped and screened by existing woodland to blend in with the surrounding area. Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing Technology was described in a paper in Copper/Cobre 03. Four years on, the technology is operating at a full scale production facility.Hindustan Zinc Limited expanded their capacity by installing the AUSMELT process. The process proceeds through smelting, slag reduction, slag cleaning and holding stages sequentially in the same vessel, resulting in widely varying off gas characteristics. The off gas is suitable for treatment is a conventional acid plant for a modest proportion of the day, but at other times produces off gas too high in S02 to be discharged to atmosphere. Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing Technology was identified as a means of effectively removing the S02 down to low levels from the off gas during all stages of the pyrometallurgical process. Furthermore, the Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing System Technology produces high purity S02 that allowed for the captured S02 to be directed to an existing acid plant, avoiding the capital cost of new acid making capacity.

Adopting 240°-270° larger magnetic element with multi-poles and magnetic pulsation, and combining the devices of multi-channel rinsing water and top flushing water and new style tank, HUATE® JCTN can improve another 2%-10% concentrate mFe% than the traditional MS without lowering the concentrate recovery rate. Thereby, it solves the uneasy concentrate upgradation problem of the traditional MS resulting from the magnetic aggregation. "WITHIN THE BROAD PARAMETERS implied by the title of my speech, I propose to deal more particularly this evening with a subject the many aspects of which have constituted the essential elements of one of the main thrusts undertaken by the MAC in the past two years, i.e., to create among Canadians a much greater awareness of the importance of mining and to demonstrate to them what are the many and varied benefits they derive from mining activities across their country. In other words, MINING - WHAT IT MEANS TO CANADA.I also intend to discuss some aspects of government-industry relationships.I am very conscious of the fact that I am speaking to an audience made u in large part of experts in several fields of mining and exploration activities. They will be familiar with many of the points I intend to discuss. However, without in any way suggesting that familiarity breeds contempt, might I emphasize that even in this particular forum there is justification for reiterating some of our basic philosophies and suggesting ways whereby they might be better understood and promoted.Let us first summarize the present dimensions of the Canadian mining industry."
