Precambrian Shield rocks, exposed in the extreme northeast corner of Alberta, provide the only possibility for a granitic building stone development in the province. Among a wide variety of granitoid rocks in the Shield, the Chipewyan Red Granite is one of the most favourable prospects. Geological mapping and exploration has revealed two prospective sites within a major pluton situated close to navigable water. Cleaned outcrop surfaces show clearly the pattern of joints and lithologic variations within the granite at prospective quarry sites. Other features include: basic dykes, quartz veins, and sheeting fracture zanes. Systematic orthogonally arranged fracture sets and the sheeting zanes are auributed to a tectonic origin. onsystematic irregular fractures are related to surface and nearsurface processes, such as decompression through unloading .

"This paper describes the results of full-scale testing of several multi-layered wood crib configurations that were tested in the Bureau of Mines mine roof simulator in cooperation with the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory and Cape Breton Development Corporation of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Nine different crib configurations currently being used as wood packwall supports for advancing longwall applications in Canada were evaluated. Configuration parameters understudy included the aspect ratio (height-to-width relationship) and percentage of solid material used in the crib construction. Test results and generalized wood crib behaviour are discussed in detail. Recommendations are made concerning crib constructions to maximize strength and stability. A cost benefit analysis of multi-layered wood crib configurations is made. A comparison of laboratory results and underground observations of several wood packwall supports in the Sydney coalfield suggest in situ load capacity is less than that measured in laboratory testing. Reasons for the apparent decrease of in situ load bearing capability are described.IntroductionA cooperative effort was undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL) to evaluate the behaviour of gateside packing materials used in advancing longwall mining applications in the Sydney coalfield. As part of this effort, full-scale tests were conducted on wood packwall supports in the Bureau's 3-million pound (13.3 MN) active load frame.Nine different pack configurations were evaluated as part of this study. The wood packwall supports were multi-layered crib constructions from 6 in. (0.15 m) by 6 in. (0.15 m) cross section timbers using timber s 30 in. (0.75 m) and 60 in. (1.5 m) in length . The percentage of solid material in the crib constructions varied as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. A summary of crib constructions is provided in Table 1."

For example, in scale up from laboratory and pilot test results to full size flotation plant design, empirical rule s are often used to establish residence time and number of cells in the bank. Coleman suggests a factor of at least 2, and up to 5 for gold ores, be applied to laboratory determined flotation times. This is further illustrated in Table I, taken from Denver equipment. The number of cells in series to achieve the required retention time while minimizing short-circuiting has generated a variety of conclusions (Table 2). Obviously there is less than complete agreement on the subject. Young notes that a clear difference of opinion has emerged and cites as extremes, (i) the publications of Outokumpum showing unimpaired recovery for its largest machines (38 m3) compared to equivalent retention times for numerous smaller machines, and (ii) the experiences of Eastern European countries where the practice is to install banks of 30 unit s or more, operating in series, often with unit retention times of only a fraction of a minute.The empirical factors used by engineers presumably account for other than tested feed conditions, inefficiencies in large continuous machines, inevitable day-to-day circuit disruptions, gradual equipment deterioration and any other safety factor the engineer feels compelled to incorporate. An understanding of RTD concepts and techniques should help the practicing mineral engineer to develop more soundly based factors. "Banded iron formation rocks associated with massive sulfide lenses in the Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag deposit in the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex, South Africa, were investigated with respect to the geochemistry of manganiferous silicate-rich bands. Two common varieties of these are: amphibole- and garnet-rich iron formation bands. The results reveal that the former are enriched in Fe, Mg, Cu, Co and S. The garnet-rich bands are enriched in Mn, Ca, P, Pb and Ba with significant detrital contamination of Ti, AI, Zr, Cr, Y, V, Ni and Nd.The silicate-rich bands have compositions, in terms of, Si/AI, SilFe, FelMn, LalCe and Co/Zn, comparable to submarine chemical sediments which precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. The garnetand amphibole-rich bands are interpreted as ""evolved"" and ""immature"" hydrothermal sediments, respectively. The latter resulted from rapid precipitation after exhalation, whereas the former had a longer residence within sea water. The silicate-rich bands both exhibit increasing Mn/(Mn+Fe) fractions, which are consistent with a variation expected from proximal to distal depositional settings. The prevalence of garnet-rich bands over amphibole-rich bands is interpreted as the result of injection of hydrothermal fluids from a single vent situated along the northwest margin of the Broken Hill deposit."

"Countercurrent decantation circuits(CCD) are often employed in hydrometallurgy to effect solids-liquid separation in combination with a barren solution wash to reduce losses of valuable solution component(s) from the tails. Bechtel Corporation uses its BEMSIM flowsheet-modelling PC computer program to simulate a CCD circuit where the ""dirty"" wash solution contains significant amounts of soluble components. An algorithm successfully models this condition and is simplified to a single expression when the wash solution is a ""clean"" solution containing no solubles. The CCD calculation module is compared to operating data from uranium and nickel-cobalt CCD circuits.IntroductionHydrometallurgical process schemes have often relied on countercurrent washing methods to reduce soluble losses of valuable product in the tails. Commonly used equipment to effect this operation is a CCD circuit of N thickeners in series, where a slurry is fed to thickener I and a wash solution to thickener N; clear pregnant solution overflows thickener I and washed tails exit as underflow from thickener N. CCD circuits of this type are typically employed when the solids tend to slime heavily and where a filter is not economic.A typical CCD circuit usually employs from two to five thickeners and can employ either a ""clean"" washing solution of, say, pure water or else the hydrometallurgical circuit may generate a ""dirty"" barren solution containing an appreciable amount of soluble component which may be advantageously returned to the process as CCD wash solution. Various authors have treated the case for clean washing solutions (Svarkovsky 1977, Merritt 1970). For the case of dirty wash solutions, an algorithm has been developed to enable efficient modelling by the BEMSIM computer program, because the need for an accurate method to calculate soluble losses is required when performing an economic trade-off analysis of the value of product lost in the tails as a function of the number of thickeners."

"For the last three decades, the application of network planning has provided a basis for a formal and general approach to the discipline of project management. For fixed activity duration, a very simple algorithm commonly known as critical path method (CPM), gives the length of time required for the total project as well as indicates the activities which are vital to the completion of a project. Project Evaluation Review Techniques (PER T) on the other hand, generalize the above approach to recognize uncertainty in the activity durations by allowing them to be random variables. One of the misleading aspects of current "" PER T"" solution method is, however, the implication that there is a unique critical path. In general, any number of paths could be critical, depending on the particular realization of the random activity durations that actually occur. In this case, simulation can be utilized to estimate completion time of a project.In this paper, the concept of criticality indexing is discussed, and a simulation model application which defines the critical path based on the criticality indexing concept, to a longwall development - extraction network, is presented. The model also provides suitable scheduling of resources based on the resource constraints and smooth s out period-t o-period assignments. IntroductionThe successful management of large-scale projects require careful planning, scheduling , and coordinating numerous interrelated activities. To aid in these task s, formal procedures based on the networks and network techniques (variously called PERT or CPM) were developed. In its original form the completion time for individual activities of a project was assumed fixed and known in advance: this in turn led to the familiar algorithms for computing the critical path, earliest start time, slack, and so forth. The unreality of such an assumption is, of course , apparent in many contexts. Consequently, attempts were made to introduce probalistic activity completion times, allowing representation of the stochastic nature of most projects."

Underhand cut and fill mining is being planned for selected areas at the David Bell Mine where high ground stresses have resulted in particularly challenging mining conditions. In order to test the placement and performance of a variety of underhand cut and fill paste mats three different designs have been installed and extensively instrumented along the A-Zone 9C ore sill. The sill is approximately 87m long, 4.0m high, and 5.0m average width. The sill was broken into 3 sections each of which will contain one of the sill mat designs. The underhand sill will be mined 3.75mW x 4.0mH, allowing for some overbreak while minimizing the risk of the back span exceeding the design limit of 4.0mW. Each test sill mat includes pre and post-support and includes 0.5m (18?) broken muck mat placed along the sill floor. Upon developing beneath these mats quantitative and qualitative measures will be used to determine which design is the most suitable for application in underhand mining at David Bell.

"The Sherritt Gordon mine is 100 miles north of The Pas in northern Manitoba. Copper-zinc ore was discovered on the property in 1922. Production began in 1931 and continued to June, 1932, when operations were suspended because of the low price of copper. Operations were resumed on August 1st, 1937, and have been carried on continuously from that time to the present (March 1947). The production of metals up to the end of 1945 was copper, 287,129,880 lb.; zinc concentrate (50 per cent) 104,419 tons ; gold, 79,388 oz.; silver, 2,529,974 oz.GENERALThe ore occurs in two deposits, the east and the west. Both are enclosed in gneisses that are highly metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic derivatives. The rock beneath the deposits, and hence forming their footwall, is gneissoid quartzite; the hanging-wall rock is basic garnetiferous hornblende gneiss. Pegmatite commonly occurs along both foot- and hangingwall peripheries and as isolated blocks and fragments within the ore zone . These blocks and fragments are considered to be residuals of unreplaced host rock .The ore is relatively coarse grained and ranges from the massive to the disseminated type. The metallic sulphides composing these, named in the order of their abundance, are pyrite and pyrrhotite ( 2-1 ratio) , chalcopyrite, sphalerite (marmatite) , and minor chalmeriite; subordinate amounts of gold and silver are recovered . The insoluble content of the ore averages about 35 per cent.Another deposit known as the Bob Lake, much smaller and lower in grade but having very similar relationships, occurs about 3 ½ miles to the northeast of the main Sherritt Gordon ore masses.STRUCTUREThe Sherritt Gordon orebodies are of the replacement type, and lie within a pegmatite sill that has been intruded along a contact between quartzite and hornblende gneiss. The two main orebodies are intimately related, for the east deposit is an erosional remnant of the lower, easterly limit of an orebody once continuous with the west body. The ore lies along the southwest limb of an overturned syncline."

"This paper summarizes the optimum leach conditions for each Of several cobalt-containing arsenical feed materials, describes the solution treatment prior to purification of cobalt recovery, and discusses the plant operation on one feed as well as the treatment of effluents.IntroductionDuring the period 1962-1964, when the demand for uranium was low, Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited (Eldorado Nuclear Limited) made a decision to undertake a three-year diversification program. One area chosen in this program was that concerned with the processing of cobalt-nickel materials. Many such materials were evaluated over the three-year period, ranging from tailings, residues, ores, concentrates and speiss to metal scrap. Cobalt feed materials, on which much of the effort was concentrated, were those containing arsenic together with other metals such as silver, copper, nickel and iron. This paper describes the treatment of arsenic-bearing feed materials (ranging from 0.3 to 570/0 As) and the subsequent purification stages required before the separation and recovery of high-purity cobalt. Because of the current interest in treating cobalt ores, it seemed appropriate that the information on the treatment of various cobalt feeds should now be made available . Although a large amount of data were generated during the research and process development program, a complete scientific correlation and understanding could not be achieved. Nevertheless, the data may provide a guide to others involved in processing not only cobalt, but other arsenical ores."

"The toxicity of arsenic is well known and documented; however, the presence of arsenic in copper electrorefining anodes and electrolytes is critically necessary to produce high-quality cathode. Arsenic as well as antimony and bismuth concentrations vary relative to their concentration in the anode copper received from the smelter. The behaviour and benefits of arsenic in copper electrorefining and the detrimental effects of antimony and bismuth on cathode quality and tankhouse performance are discussed. This will include the minimization and mitigation of problems associated with arsenic, antimony, and bismuth—including cathode contamination, floating slimes, scaling, and anode passivation.RÉSUMÉ La toxicité de l’arsenic est bien connue et documentée; toutefois, la présence d’arsenic dans les anodes de l’électroaffinage du cuivre et dans les électrolytes est d’une nécessité critique pour produire une cathode de grande qualité. Les concentrations en arsenic, ainsi qu’en antimoine et en bismuth varient selon leur concentration dans l’anode de cuivre reçue de la fonderie. THE HYDRAULIC TRANSPORT of solids is becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the world. Major long-distance slurry pipelines currently in operation transport commodities such as coal and various ore concentrates distances of up to hundreds of miles. In the United States, a number of large-diameter, high-tonnage pipelines are under consideration for the transport of Western Plains coal to markets up to 1000 miles away. In these and other applications, the solids are generally quite fine, with 14 mesh being a typical limit of particle size for long-distance (over 100 miles) slurry transport. There are applications where it might be practical to transport solids consisting of larger particles distances of up t o 100 miles. Deposits of high-quality metallurgical coal are found in the inner foothills belt along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains on the Alberta-B. C. border. There are few existing railroad s and the possibilities of constructing extensions are limited because of environmental and economic factor s. In these circumstances, the most efficient transportation system might consist of a pipeline to transport the coal from the mine to beneficiation plants located near existing railroads 50 or 100 miles away. Such systems would minimize environmental effects, capital cost s and operating costs. To determine whether such a system would be technically feasible, experimental testing is needed to determine the energy requirements for transporting coarse coal in a pipe line. Currently, run-of-mine metallurgical coal is crushed to less than 1 1/2 inches before going to the beneficiation plant. In the proposed scheme, coal of this size would be transported through a pipeline to the beneficiation plant located at the railroad. The Transportation Development Agency and the Department of Supply and Services have awarded a contract to the Saskatchewan Research Council to study pipelining of coarse coal in pipelines ranging from 4 inches to 12 inches in diameter.

In this study, the kinetics of isothermal solidification during TLP bonding of Inconel 625 and 718 superalloys with nickel based multi-component filler alloy BNi-2 have been studied through a combination of direct experimentation and mathematical modeling in order to determine the effect of process variables and, thus, to optimize the process. The predicted isothermal solidification completion times from the boron diffusion model and migrating solid/liquid interface model were in good agreement with the experimentally determined values and, they were found to be significantly less than those of other nickel superalloys with different nickel based filler alloys. Further, significant reduction of holding time was observed with increasing bonding temperature and with decreasing joint gap. No significant grain growth in the base metals has been observed in the temperature range being investigated (1325 - 1394K).

"Refratechnik, a leading German refractory company, acquired a majority shareholding in Baymag in 1979. This acquisition included the mining rights for a magnesite deposit of exceptionally high purity in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.The deposit, situated in the Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, is of Cambrian age and has ore reserves of 50 million m. t. of magnesite. The Baymag magnesite deposit is one of the purest in the world. The deposit was opened up and mining commenced in early 1982. Production of various caustic calcined magnesia products in a rotary kiln operation in Exshaw, Alberta, was started in mid-1982. The product application ranges from pulp and paper production, to the chemical industry, and to animal feed supplements. Since the end of 1983, Baymag has produced high-quality refractory grade fused magnesium oxide f or specialty applications in the steel industry.IntroductionAlthough magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth and forms about 2.06% of the earth's crust, common knowledge about magnesium and especially magnesium oxide (MgO) as an industrial mineral is not widespread. The reason might be that, with the exception of magnesium metal as the element, magnesia products are not generally sold as final products to end-users, but rather are needed for the production of final products such as steel, cement, paper, etc. Therefore, some general comments are given about the different sources of MgO, the different products, world production and consumption , before Baymag specifics are addressed. Magnesium metal will not be discussed in this paper."

"IntroductionAn integrated Truck Management Information System (Truck MIS) evolves as seemingly separate functions combined to yield a single homogeneous result / product. The concept of a computer integrated Truck MIS includes truck dispatch, truck maintenance management and truck weighing.A truck management system is only as good as the information / data bases input to it. The concept of an integrated system works best with automated data gathering. Automated data gathering provides timely and normally, the most accurate historical information/data bases. Data bases are, however, historical, which is a problem to be overcome in a computerized truck management information system, especially in regards to a truck dispatch system as loading sites / loading conditions and some dump site conditions continually change. As these changes occur, data base s must change as well, and thus the need for the continual update of data bases that the computer uses for a Truck MIS.For a truck dispatch system to achieve reliability / viability, dispatch decisions need to revolve around real time data gathered in an automated way. Integration of all truck management function s through automated data gathering lead s to the best over-all system.An integrated system is a combination of many different factors and is only as good as each factor / building block put in the system. With the proper building blocks, an integrated Truck MIS is very feasible - an MIS System that includes weighing, time and motion study, truck maintenance and maintenance management, as well as truck dispatch.Truck MISAn integrated Truck MIS provides for truck dispatch as the ultimate end result, a truly automated /integrated truck dispatch system (to function non-operator-dependent). The following comprises its central building blocks:-Time.- Haul Cycle Segments.Truck Status, i.e. Load on truck,- being loaded,- loaded,- unloaded,- in service,- out of service.- Vehicle Location.Loading Equipment Status.- in service,- out of service.Optional- distance travelled in each haul segment.With this data provided on a non-operator dependent basis, it is possible to build good data bases so a computer can make truck dispatch decisions. Knowing what information is needed as the central core to a good Truck MIS, how can this information be automatically gathered and fed into a central control computer?"

Dissociative adsorption of hydrogen (deuterium) on thin gold films grown on Ir{111} surface has been studied with temperature-programmed desorption using a quadrupole mass spectrometer and nuclear reaction analysis. Thin Au{111} films are epitaxially grown on Ir{111}. Surprisingly, H2 (D2) can dissociatively adsorb on these Au{111} films, although it is well known that Au surfaces are noble enough not to dissociate hydrogen molecules [B. Hammer and J.K. Nørskov, Nature 376, (1995) 238]. We attribute this to the sensitivity of hydrogen to changes in the local surface properties, e.g., electron localization (the narrowing of the s-band, the s-band center model), which could explain the upto now unexpected high for the reactivity of a thin Au{111} surface. Moreover, we found that H (D) atoms can be confined into a Au thin film and/or the interface between an Ir surface and the thin Au film. We demonstrate how anomalously reactive thin Au films grown on an Ir surface are, and also compare the Au films with Ag films grown on Ir to test the validity/generality of our proposed s-band center model.

"The object of this paper is to outline a computerized net cash flow approach for practical cutoff grade determinations. A cutoff grade carries not only geological but also economic value, in which costs are balanced against revenues. For different situations, cutoff grades are a 'standard of value' that are determined for the purpose of classifying economic or uneconomic mineral reserves in a specified time frame. In a constantly changing technical and economic environment, the decision to develop or maintain a mining operation at its best economic potential, requires an appropriate cutoff grade strategy, a strategy consistent with short- and long-term operational and corporate objectives and one based on realistic marketing and metal prices forecasts. The use of a project evaluation computer program, in combination with specific corporate net cash flow requirements, shows the most promising and flexible team approach for cutoff grade optimization.IntroductionThe recent recession has had a devastating effect on the Canadian mining industry. Exploration and mining R&D expenditures have been critically reduced and now are believed to be below healthy levels. Ore reserves, mine life and cutoff grades are careening in several directions because of low base metal prices, relatively high costs and sensitive precious metal prices.These conditions demand an improved understanding of the terms ""ore"" and ""cutoff grades"" as they are applied to the planning process and day-to-day operations. ""Ore"" or 'ore reserves"" is a dynamic concept, reflecting a cumulative effect of changes in geological, technical and economic conditions in terms of material which can be mined at a potential profit. By contrast, if economics are not the primary consideration, the term ""mineral reserve"" or ""mineral inventory"" should be used to describe the mineral deposit. For different situations, cutoff grade is ""a standard of value"" determined for the purpose of classifying mineral reserves as economic or uneconomic in a specified time frame. The question of mining at average reserve grade or low-grade material during high metal prices is of paramount importance for cutoff grade strategy."
