"This paper compares the behaviour of gold and ore in the grinding circuit of Hemlo Mines Ltd. Particular attention is given to grinding kinetics, classification behaviour, and liberation. For grinding kinetics, laboratory grinding of gold flakes and silica, 840 µm to 1200 µm in size (14/20 mesh), was also performed to provide a standard for comparison and to study in a controlled environment the mechanisms of breakage, folding , smearing and impacting.Grinding kinetics were characterized at laboratory scale with breakage and selection functions. The breakage function showed that 75% of gold disappearing from the 840 µm to 1200 µm class reported to the 600 µm to 840 µm; this figure is much higher than for silica (46%) or most other minerals, and implies that comparatively fewer fine fragments are produced from the breakage of gold flakes, on account of gold's malleability. The selection function of silica was four times that of gold. At plant scale, the ratio of the selection function of ore and gold increased from 6 for at 50 urn to JOO pm to 20 at 500 um to 1000µm.Observation of original flakes and their fragments with the scanning electron microscope showed that the main mechanism of ""grinding"" from the 840 µm to 1200 µm to the 600 µm to 840 µm class was folding rather than actual breakage. This was confirmed by a measure of individual flake weight. The postulated breakage cycle is that relatively globular flakes become increasingly serrated through grinding; they can then regain their original shape through folding and reflattening into cylindrical and spherical shapes, as the majority does; however, some fragments will at this point undergo actual breakage. Photograhic evidence is presented to support the proposed mechanisms.Smearing of gold unto silica was observed when silica was ground after a gold, and embedding of silica into gold flakes when gold was ground after a silica. Both mechanisms occur whenever gold and harder minerals are jointly ground, and result in ""unliberation"" of gold. It is postulated that smearing of gold onto other minerals plays an important role in explaining how gravity recovery can increase over-all gold metallurgy, especially when used ahead of flotation.Classification of gold in the primary hydro cyclones takes place at a much finer cut-size than ore, 20 µm vs 57 µm. This and the slower grinding kinetics result in high gold circulating loads in the primary loop, 6700%, and a gold content in the primary cyclone underflow (PCUF) is twenty-four times that of the ore. The gold size distribution for primary cyclone overflow is much finer than that of the ore, although they are essentially similar in the PCUF.Liberation, or more accurately ""gravity recoverability"", was assessed with a 7.5 cm (3 in.) Knelson concentrator. It varied between the thirties for the primary mill discharge and two cyclone overflows, to highs of 89% and 92% for the PCUF and secondary mill discharge."

"Certain environmental problems can substantially alter the physical properties of the subsurface. In such cases, geophysical methods can be used to map the distribution of subsurface contamination or buried wastes prior to drilling or sampling. For example, inorganic contamination by acids, bases, salts, or metallic ions can be detected by instruments that measure ground conductivity; metallic objects such as buried drums, pipelines, etc. can be located by magnetic survey, and radioactive mine waste can be mapped by radiometric techniques. Geophysical methods can also be used to characterize site geology. If carried out prior to development, they can assist in identifying areas of high- and low permeability and sources of natural contamination. The methods can also be used to establish baseline values and to locate stable areas for development of environmentally sensitive facilities. Application of geophysical methods to environmental problems is illustrated with examples from base-metal mines, uranium operations, and potash and oil-sands operations. Particular attention is given to the problem of acid mine drainage. =IntroductionGeophysical methods have been used for many years by the mining industry in exploration and geotechnical investigations. The basic techniques for mapping variations in physical properties of the subsurface have been adapted to meet the special needs of resource exploration and development in the coal, potash , oil sands, industrial minerals, precious metals, and base-metal industries. Now the mining industry is facing another challenge: to operate the mining cycle, from discovery to closure, with minimum impact on the environment. This involves the rehabilitation of abandoned mining sites, the minimization and effective containment of pollutants at operating and developing sites, and the longterm containment and monitoring of sites after mine closures.Some of the most difficult aspects of environmental control and monitoring relate to the location of buried waste and contaminated fluids in the subsurface. As in the search for buried ore deposits or in geotechnical investigations, geophysics can be a valuable aid in subsur face environmental investigations. Investigations can be remedial , involving the location or monitoring of existing problems, or preventative, where problem areas are identified or background values are established before site development. In either case, geophysical methods should not be considered as a substitute for drilling. Geophysical interpretations in general do not provide the detail required for a complete environmental or geotechnical investigation. They are most useful as rapid reconnaissance methods for targeting subsequent drilling or for interpreting subsurface condit ions away from drill holes. Table I lists the common geophysical methods and the physical properties to which they are sensitive."

"Large subhorizontal joints have been found in the foundation excavations in basalt and granite of Brazilian Dams. Some spread for hundreds of square meters showed slickensides—polished surfaces plus striations—and laminations interpreted as related to shear displacement, what substantially reduced their shear strength and imposed special reinforcement measures against the potential sliding of overlying concrete structures. The geological characteristics of these discontinuities have raised speculations related to their origin, be it related to mechanisms of bulging, cambering or to some tectonic or primary geological event.Several geologists and engineers from the northern hemisphere including Terzaghi already showed to be concerned with their role in granite foundations while in the southern regions Brazilian authors have found similar occurrences but also affecting individual lava flows of continental flood basalts in the foundations of major dams of the Parana Basin, which they designated under the particular name of “fault-joints”. This double-standard designation is self-explanatory of the difficulties involving their origin and related geomechanical properties: faults or just shear joints?Recently, similar features were encountered in the foundations of large dam constructions in anorogenic granites inserted in the realm of the Brazilian Amazon, where some of these discontinuities exhibit features common to tectonic thrusting combined with deep tropical weathering.The evidence of preshearing along the surfaces of such fractures, also associated to products of deep weathering, reduces their geomechanical strength substantially, suggesting values of ultimate phi spanning 12 to 28°. The detection of these descontinuities during initial investigation phases continues to be a major complex task in geological risk evaluations surveys. Trenching associated to some geophysical exploration techniques, although considered to be very basic exploration techniques are still the suggested methods for their forecast and previous determination."

"Abstract - The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumed late Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: monzonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group of rocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or mining district, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu and Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1) porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfide deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, eastwest, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolution of the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic mineralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magma may have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Plutons similar to the ESS should be good targets for mineral exploration. Résumé - Le Stock de East Sullivan (SES) est une intrusion composite alcaline d’âge tardiarchéen, situé dans le camp minier de Val d’Or. Trois principaux faciès ont été identifiés: une monzonite sensu stricto, une monzonite porphyrique et un porphyre trachytique vert. Les données chimiques montrent que ce groupe des roches monzonitiques est relativement homogène en composition avec des concentrations élevées de Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo et ETRL, définissant une suite alcaline typique. Cet alkalin stock peut être facilement distingué des autres unités géologiques de la région de Val d’Or, tel le batholite de Bourlamaque, par une concentration élevée de Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu et d’Au. Le SES contient plusieurs importants prospects de métal précieux (Au) et de métaux de base (Cu, Mo), incluant: (1) une minéralisation disséminée de type porphyre Cu-Mo-Au, (2) une minéralisation de Cu-Au dans les roches volcaniques encaissantes hôtesses près du contact et (3) une minéralisation d’or pyritique dans une zone de cisaillement de direction est-nordest. Le SES est bien défini sur la carte aéromagnétique en couleurs du gradient vertical par des zonages concentriques, où quatre linéaments structuraux ont été reconnus: 035°-55°, 320°-300°, est-ouest, et nord-sud. "In order to avoid pollution of water in Flemming Brook and Little River, which drain the area in which the Brunswick No. 12 Mine and Concentrator are located, the company has gone to considerable expense in preparing tailings storage and effluent setting ponds. The attached drawing gives a plan of the six settling ponds together with elevations of the dikes and the effluent weirs.All original dikes for the six ponds were constructed from humus-free clay and rock material, which was obtained, preferentially, by excavating from within the dike area. Run-off water, precipitated on the outside slopes of the dams will drain off without contacting the tailing material. A ditch was made north of the dam site to deflect surface run-off to the east into a branch of Flemming Brook.A secondary dike, made from tailings, has recently been erected on No. 1 and No. 2 tailings pond inside and above the earth-filled dike which serves as a roadway. Run-off from the tailings dikes will be retained inside the ponds by ditching between the roadway and tailings dike into ponds 4 and 6."

MR. J. C. NICHOLSON: The author has discussed his subject in a very thorough manner. One difficulty is the tendency to regard a 'permitted' explosive as a 'safe' explosive. There is no such article as a safe explosive; any explosive is only as safe as the man who handles it. In making up the primer, the method illustrated in the paper is alright for the ordinary explosive but not so for the sheathed explosive, for the sheathing would be punctured. MR. T. L. McCALL: I fee! quite certain that there would be little, if any, trouble from flame shots or misfires if the author's suggestions were carried out. There is a tendency on the part of the shot-firer to over-shoot, so as to bring clown more coal for the miner, and frequently a shot has not sufficient burden imposed upon it. Shooting one hole may not only lessen the burden on an adjacent hole, but may practically release it altogether, in which case the second hole should be fired with a very small charge, or perhaps it might not be necessary to shoot it at all. While the paper refers to shooting in the coal only, it should be under-stood that the instructions given are equally applicable to brushing shots. I do not wish to bring up any contentious point, but would the author say a word on cushioning with air gaps and on multiple shooting? Single shooting in rock might open up a feeder of gas which could be ignited by the ?second shot.

The selection of the main mineralised zone (MMZ) concentrator milling circuit has followed a comprehensive route over the preceding 10 years. Many knowledgeable parties have contributed and assisted in developing the milling circuit according to the best available information. The final selection of the flow sheet was completed after DRA conducted a techno-economic study on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous (AG) milling. The results from all the above mentioned work indicated that it is possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding circuit. The flow sheet was designed to treat the main mineralised zone (MMZ) arising’s from both underground and open cast operations and incorporates a fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuit. Commissioning of the 375ktpm concentrator at Nkomati Nickel began in August 2009 with the first ore reporting to the mill on the 15th of September 2009.

In this paper, dissolution of vanadium from mining residue, in which vanadium is associated intimately with magnetite ore, was investigated via both bacterial ( aerobic and anaerobic) and fungal activity. Although bacterial activity was tangible, it could not reduce and dissolve vanadium in both aerobic and anaerobic experiments. However, in fungal leaching, after 30 days about 36.9% and 29.7% of vanadium was dissolved for a pulp density of 10 and 30 g/l, respectively. At the end, the concentration of metabolites usually produced by fungal activity was optimized and oxalic acid was chosen as the main agent for the leaching process.

"Since the amount of e-waste has been rapidly increasing all over the world, there is a desire to develop the effective recycling process. E-waste has various kinds of electronic components with valuable and/or hazardous materials. Recycling of them is an important subject from the viewpoint of both the recovery of valuable materials and waste treatment. In common with all mineral processing, the comminution of e-waste is a key process because the liberation states after comminution determine the overall efficiency of metal recovery. Since some of useful critical metals are concentrated in a specific component, a special and selective grinding is expected to be effective. However, the knowledge about the mechanism and the effectiveness of the selective grinding is still limited and unclear.To better comprehend the mechanism, in this study, the investigation of comminution process using the particle-based simulation was conducted. Especially, this study focused on the comminution performance of printed circuit boards (PCBs), which are major components of e-waste. The behavior of PCBs and airflow in a drum typed agitation mill having flexible chains was simulated by the discrete element method (DEM) coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To model the shape of PCBs, the particle based rigid body model was introduced into the DEM. Since this model could not directly simulate the breakage phenomena, collision energy was calculated to qualitatively evaluate the comminution performance. In addition, the simulation results were compared with the experimental comminution tests using simulant PCBs where some capacitors were solder-mounted. These results indicated that comminution performance was affected by the rotation speed of the agitator. It was also demonstrated that the comminution performance was qualitatively evaluated using the particle-based simulation and this particle-based simulation made it possible to investigate the mechanism of e-waste comminution."

It is more important because economic and financial analyses of a proposed project provide a basis for judgment of a project's commercial viability by equity participants, lenders and, in some cases, other participants such as off takers and governments. It is more difficult because these analyses must, of necessity, be based on estimates, projections and evaluations which must be made in a period remarkable for its economic and political uncertainty.Project evaluation starts with the analysis of the engineering, commercial and financial information available. Beginning with the preliminary design and capital cost estimates, alternative financing plans can be developed outlining possible sources of funds, terms and security arrangements. Pro-forma financial statements can also be developed, including sources and uses of funds, cash flow schedules, income statements and balance sheets. With these results, various profitability measures can be determined.Subsequently, in an effort to deal with uncertainty, these results can be tested by measuring the impact on project viability and profitability of changes in project and external variables such as product process, mining and processing rates, operating and financing costs, currency exchange rates and other factors.The results are a number of financial projections reflecting different assumptions for key project parameters. The projections can be used to structure the project to achieve the maximum financial performance. Projects, the financial viability and profitability of which can be demonstrated under varying market conditions, will be the most competitive in capital markets."

"At Dofasco sNo.4furnace a variation of the basic oxygen steelmaking process, Klockner Oxygen Bottom Maxhutte (K-OBM), is used to produce steel. Large amounts of hot gases and particulate are evolved during the oxygen blowing phase. A quencher and a venturi scrubber are used to collect over 99.5% of the particulate. In 1990, the authors investigated the effect of foamy slag on the particulate emissions from the furnace. The amount of lime added early in the oxygen blowing cycle was reduced, making the slag more viscous and foamy for a six minute period. Instantaneous particulate emissions were monitored throughout the blow by analyzing quencher and venturi scrubber water samples. Particulate emissions were reduced up to 59% during the foamy slag period.IntroductionThe reduction of the amount of waste generated or control of emissions at source is at the top of the ""3R"" hierarchy of waste management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Process and operating practice changes are often the most economical ways to control emissions. At Dofasco, they investigated the effect of operating practice changes, specifically the formation of a foamy slag, on particulate emissions from steelmaking furnaces. They wanted to determine if a foamy slag changed the quantity and nature of the fume evolved from the K-OBM furnace over the oxygen blowing phase.The Basic Oxygen Steelmaking ProcessesThe basic oxygen steelmaking process (BOP) generates large quantities of very fine metal oxide fume during the production of steel. In this process, scrap steel and molten iron (hot metal) from blast furnaces are charged into a steelmaking furnace. Then pure oxygen is injected and a lime flux added . The oxygen reacts with carbon dissolved in the molten iron to form carbon monoxide. Oxygen lances can have secondary nozzles which introduce oxygen above the bath. This secondary oxygen, known as post-combustion, bums some of the carbon monoxide radiating the heat back to the bath. Particulate and gases rich in carbon monoxide are ejected from the furnace during the oxygen blowing phase and are collected by a gas cleaning system. Typically, more than 99.5010 of the particulate is scrubbed from the gases by high energy venturi scrubbers or electrostatic precipitators. The oxide sludge or dust collected may have elevated zinc and lead which is unsuitable for recycle to blast furnaces. Due to the presence of these undesirable elements, treatment and disposal of steelmaking oxide dust is difficult and costly."

Gold and platinum group metals (PGM) do not dissolve in sulfate electrolyte from anode during electro-refining of primary copper. The PGM form solid ‘slimes’ which accumulates at bottom of the electrolytic cell. Typically, 8 to 10 ppm silver is present in copper cathodes, which is equivalent to almost 2% of silver loss during electro-refining. The silver can be cemented with cathode copper as soon as it is dissolved into the electrolyte from anode or during entrapment of slime particles in cathode. Over a period of time, the concentrates grade has deteriorated and change in type & amount of impurities in concentrate has resulted in higher silver loss during refining process. Therefore, an in-depth investigation was carried out in both fire- and electro-refining processes to understand the root causes of higher silver loss in copper cathodes. The detailed characterization and the plant data analysis were carried out. The results of study revealed that higher silver loss in 3rd crop cathodes as compared to 1st and 2nd crop cathodes from same anode. In anode silver was present in two forms, dissolved in copper (solid solution) and in slime phases such as Cu2-xAgxSeTe. SEM-EDX study of anode cross section confirmed higher silver and oxygen content in central region (core) of anode as compared that in both air and mold sides. This is due to non-uniform cooling of anode which was confirmed by the solidification modeling. Higher concentration of oxygen & silver at core of anode rised Ag+ concentration in electrolyte and slime particles during 3rd crop. The results of study were used to optimize the anode cooling process and also electrolyte chemistry to reduce the silver loss. The details of study carried out are discussed in this paper using the results of modeling, characterization and experimental studies. INTRODUCTION In the electrolytic refining of copper, fire refined copper anodes are used as raw material. Anodes contains copper of the range 99.5 to 99.6%, rest being the impurities. Hence, the purpose of the refining is (1) to remove the impurities so that final cathode conforms to the LME specifications and also (2) to recover the precious metal from the anode copper. When anode is dissolved, most of the impurities reports to the anode slime settled at the bottom of the cell, and rest dissolves in the electrolyte. Dissolved impurities remains in electrolyte and are removed during electrolyte recycling. However, sometime dissolved impurities and slime particles get entrapped in cathode due to disturbances in operational conditions. Metals dissolving in the electrolyte are the elements such as Ni, Co, Fe, Zn. The electrode potential of As, Sb and Bi being close to that of copper, these elements partly dissolve in the electrolyte. Noble metals like Ag, Au, Pt and Pd are generally insoluble and are thus expected to report to the anode slime. A small amount of the sliver content from the anode is dissolved in the electrolyte. Because the dissolved silver electroplates on the cathode at a smaller applied potential than copper, the cathode typically contains up to 8 ppm of silver. This is referred to as ‘silver loss’ in cathode (Cooper, 1987). Fortunately, silver is a rather benign impurity in copper due to its electrical conductivity being higher than copper. However, higher silver loss in cathode is loss of revenue for Copper smelter due to significant difference in their LME price.

"Galena is the finest component of the product of a closed-circuit grind treating a lead-zinc ore, largely due to preferential recycling of this high-density mineral by the cyclone. For example, at the Pine Point Mines concentrator, for ~ 55% -200 mesh over-all, the galena will be close to 95% -200 mesh. This sliming of the lead can limit recovery, selectivity and dewatering. A proposed circuit modification to reduce the sliming is to incorporate a unit cell. A simulator was constructed to study the No. 3 grinding circuit at Pine Point modified by a unit cell on ball mill discharge (BMD).The simulator used a cumulative size basis rate-of-breakage with plug flow ball mill model, the parameters being obtained by laboratory grinding tests. Flotation and the cyclone models used a cumulative recovery/size matrix. The behaviour of each mineral, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and calcite/dolomite, was simulated. Simulation was adapted to a programmable calculator. A close fit to the existing circuit performance at two tonnages and mineral mixes was established.The simulator showed that the modified circuit could significantly coarsen the Pb grind, from 95% to —50% -200 mesh, depending on recovery, without substantially altering the size of the other minerals. The other principal findings were: compared to laboratory flotation tests on existing circuit BMD, the unit cell concentrate (CONC) will be coarser and markedly lower in grade; relatively low unit cell stage recoveries are desirable, because the cyclone scavenges the tail to give a circuit recovery which is higher than the unit cell stage recovery; unit cell stage recovery should not exceed the cyclone stage recovery, as the latter is the maximum circuit recovery; low unit cell stage recovery helps offset the disadvantage of the high flow at BMD; other high-density minerals will also be scavenged into the CONC, as illustrated by pyrite, making CONC quality difficult to maintain; density control of BMD flotation does not greatly alter feed density to the cyclone or ball mill.Possible plant metallurgy is forecast for a CONC diverted to final lead concentrate."

Mercury is often present in gold ores and can be released during processing. In view of health and environmental concerns related to mercury, the mining industry takes leadership in the responsible management of mercury. This paper reviews various aspects of mercury management, including an overview of mercury deportment in typical gold processing flowsheets; trends in mercury legislation impacting the international flow and management of mercury in the gold mining industry; and treatment, storage and disposal options for mercury and mercury containing materials.

ABSTRACT: The development and evolution of the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test procedure at McGill University is reviewed in this paper. Since the late 1980s, the research group led by the late Professor André Robert Laplante at McGill University has undertaken fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson concentrator to develop a sustainable method of estimating GRG. Historically, a concept of “free gold” was used, and it was de?ned as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, the practical use of amalgamation has declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. As a result of more than 10 years of improvement and optimization, this technique has become a standard method of evaluating GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. By 2006, about 200 GRG tests were carried out at McGill University on ores from all over the world. Recently, a modi?ed version of the GRG test (a simpli?ed test) was developed to provide a quick and rough estimate of the GRG in a sample; this simpli?ed test has the advantage of reduced mass, processing time and cost. To recognize and honour the contributions made by the late Professor Laplante towards the establishment of a standard test procedure for assessing gravity recovery potential, the authors propose that the GRG test be named after Laplante.

"Abstract - Pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are the dominant sulfide minerals in the 740 zone of the Kelly Lake orebody (Inco Ltd.), Copper Cliff Offset, Sudbury. Petrographic and quantitative electron microprobe analyses of minerals, from sulfide assemblages and host quartz diorite, of the 740 deposit have revealed three processes that have affected sulfide mineralization and associated sulfarsenide and platinum-group-mineral (PGM) distribution: magmatic, hydrothermal, and tectonic. Accessory, zoned cobaltite, and gersdorffite occur in sulfides as a result of these three processes, and PGM occur dominantly in hydrothermally remobilized and deformed ores. Where PGM are present in sulfarsenides they provided nuclei for sulfarsenide growth. Solitary PGM are orders of magnitude larger than those PGM found within sulfarsenide minerals. Five varieties of PGM occur, michenerite and sperrylite being the most common, with lesser froodite, hollingworthite, and ruarsite.The effect of a deformation is a localized fabric in the ore, revealed by pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite bands; pentlandite porphyroblasts also partially define the foliation. The deformed ore is also characterized by alteration of the adjacent quartz diorite, which produced an alteration assemblage including almandine garnet, Fe-rich biotite, and chlorite."
