The dissolution of low-iron sphalerite, (Zn,Fe)S containing 0.08% Fe, in ferric sulphate-sulphuric acid media was investigated using closely sized fractions of crushed sphalerite crystals and sintered disks made from the crushed crystals. Linear kinetics are observed, and the predominant reaction products are ZnSO4, FeSO4 and elemental sulphur. The leaching rate increases systematically with increasing temperature, and the calculated apparent activation energy is 56 kJ/mol for the sized sphalerite and 54 kJ/mol for the sintered disks. The relatively high apparent activation energy suggests that the rate is chemically controlled, a conclusion supported by the insensitivity of the rate to the disk rotation speed. The rate increases as the 0.22 power of the Fe(SO4)1.5 concentration, and as the 0.22 power of the H2SO4 concentration. However, in the absence of ferric ions, the rate increases more significantly with increasing H2SO4 concentrations, and relatively rapid rates are observed in solutions containing >0.5 M H2SO4. In 0.1 M Fe(SO4)1.5-0.3 M H2SO4 media, the measured rate decreases with increasing sulphate concentrations, added as Li2SO4. The rate of dissolution of low-iron sphalerite is promoted by dissolved copper concentrations as high as 800 mg/L. In contrast, dissolved silver, even in the 0-2 mg/L concentration range, significantly retards the dissolution of the low-iron sphalerite.

The flotation has been and is still the most widely used mineral concentration method. Because of its complexity, the flotation process required the development of robust control strategies which was facilitated by the introduction of on-line sensing instruments such as x-ray fluorescence (XRF) on stream analyzer (OSA), gamma density gauges and electromagnetic flowmeters. The interest in developing control strategies has persisted because the benefits to be gained in terms of improved metallurgical performance are substantial. As the flotation control becomes more and more difficult due to the emergence of low grade and complex ore cases, other control strategies have to be introduced. Froth based control is one of the emerging useful control strategy This paper will focus on the state of the art in the on-line froth characterization as obtained by numerical image analysis. The technology of machine vision provides a novel solution to several of the problems encountered in conventional flotation systems for monitoring and control, and constitutes a powerful tool for the investigation and interpretation of the effect of various flotation parameters as driven for the froth phases. "The Caledonian Belt is mainly underlain by Late Precambrian and possibly Early Palaeozoic rocks, which are in part overlain by younger strata. Most of these rocks are weakly deformed, except for those in some linear . zones, which have been intensely deformed by cataclasis. Mineral deposits related to two distinct metallization episodes have been recognized. The earliest are zinccopper- lead sulphide deposits, which have been concentrated in the axial regions of late-stage cross-folds within the main cataclastic zone. The host rocks are andesitic and dacitic tuffs which show effects of intense talcose alteration, silicification and chloritization. Deposits related to the second episode are mainly composed of copper sulphides with locally abundant tennantite and tetrahedrite, which occur in brecciated and fractured carbonate-quartz veins. These veins postdate the late-stage cross-folds. VLF-EM and high-sensitivity magnetics proved to be very effective in delineating the geology of these deposits."

Du• ring the winter of 1964-65, a reconnaissance induced polarization survey was carried out on the lake. First, several lines were surveyed over the known mu1.erahza-tion at the Henderson mine; the grid was then extended into the areas of interest. Several anomalous zones were located and drilled; one, of these proved to be of economic interest.

In spite of advances in cutting tool technology, the understanding of the basic wear behavior and failure mechanisms needs further study. Tool wear is the main factor contributing to geometrical error and thermal damage in machined components. Manifested as a reduction in tool life, it also affects the workpiece surface finish, increases cutting forces and induces residual stresses. Furthermore, the emergence of high and ultra-high speed machining processes necessitates the investigation of tool wear under these severe working conditions. Tungsten carbide-cobalt composite material has been used traditionally as wear resistant materials for many years. One main application of this material is in cutting tools. WC-Co tools consist of hard WC particles imbedded in a tough Co matrix, which functions as a binder phase. More recently, Cubic boron nitride (CBN) tool material have attracted special attention due to its high hardness and excellent wear resistance. Boron nitride in its cubic form is known to be the hardest material next only to diamond. In this paper microstructural and tribological properties of commercial grade WC-Co and CBN cutting tool materials are investigated under high speed cutting conditions. The CBN cutting tools were found to be superior to tungsten carbide (WC) tools. Four-fold increase in productivity and significant reduction in chipping and cratering was achieved for CBN as compared to WC. Wear mechanisms are proposed and are related to the observed wear characteristics in the cutting zone.

"An intuitive way to reduce power consumption in grinding operations is to feed the grinding circuit with finer feed by enhancing blasting and fragmentation control. The optimization of blasting with the objective of minimizing power consumption in grinding is not new.The study was based on a Canadian mine that processes a very hard ore. BBA conducted blasting/fragmentation and grinding circuit surveys in 2014. The results of the exercise were used to develop a base case model to simulate the effect of blasting in the operation on the grinding circuit. Tools for fragmentation simulations, particle size measurement and crushing/grinding simulations were used with the objective of reducing the OPEX costs including power consumption.The paper describes the steps involved in the model optimization as well as an economical evaluation of the OPEX savings.INTRODUCTIONIn 2014 BBA was retained by one of its clients to conduct a crushing and grinding survey. The objective of the survey was to update the grinding circuit model with production data and also to develop a tool to investigate opportunities for process improvement.A second phase of the study involved the development of drilling and blasting and crushing models. The models were used to diagnose the operations and to investigate opportunities for process improvement.The objective of the present study is to describe the approach and to identify potential improvements to overall mine site operating costs by better integrating mining and milling operating costs with blasting and grinding models."

ABSTRACT Nickel compounds vary significantly in their toxicological properties, so it is critical that continuing studies to accurately quantify worker exposures consider the processing that accompanies refining nickel-containing materials. The Clydach nickel refinery, which has operated for more than 100 years, was the first nickel-producing facility to show a high risk for lung and nasal-sinus cancers among workers employed since it opened in 1902. Process chemistry and equipment have changed dramatically over Clydach’s history. This paper describes the processing evolution at Clydach with a focus on the propensity for aerosol formation and the forms of nickel in airborne dusts.

"IntroductionREEFS of Silurian age are recognized in southwestern Ontario, both in outcrop and from subsurface information. This paper deals with the so-called 'pinnacle' reefs which are known only in the subsurface. For the purpose of this paper, the pinnacle reefs are arbitrarily defined as those structures having a height of over 250 feet and a length of less than two miles. This definition eliminates numerous mounds and other broader, more subdued, structures of less certain origin, found in subsurface beds.The term 'pinnacle reef' is perhaps unfortunate, but it is in common usage in Ontario and is used elsewhere for different types of reefs. A new name is justified by the unusual environment and structure of the Ontario reefs, but it is unlikely that any other term would gain acceptance. Rather than propose a new term which would be ignored or result in further confusion and misuse, the name 'pinnacle', as defined above, is used in this paper.Pinnacle reefs have been found over a fairly large part of southwestern Ontario. The known reefs of this type parallel the southeast edge of lake Huron and •follow the strike of the structure contours which circle the Michigan basin (see Figure 1). In total, twenty-five such reefs have been discovered in southwestern Ontario."

The paper presents the conditions for determining the selection of methods for methane drainage in Polish hard coal mines. Various factors for the evaluation of methane drainage performance are used, including the methane drainage effectiveness ratio. However, as will be discussed there are limitations to the methane drainage ratio approach resulting from the characteristics of the deposits extracted in Kompania Weglowa S.A. coal mines.

The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

Different Au/MgO catalysts modified with Mn, and Fe were prepared by precipitation-deposition. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) and CO chemisorption and were tested in CO oxidation in the temperature range of 243-523 K. The catalytic tests using both Temperature Programmed Oxidation (TPO) technique and time on stream (TOS) experiments revealed the high activity of catalysts prepared. In TPO experiments the modification by Mn significantly increased the activity above 300 K, however in the subambient temperature range the activity decreased considerably. Catalysts modified by iron did not show any decrease in the activity below 300 K, while the activity at high temperature increased significantly. Catalysts modified by Mn, Fe showed higher activity, selectivity and stability in preferential CO oxidation, carried out in the presence of hydrogen than the unmodified Au/MgO catalysts. Results of in situ FTIR spectroscopy on both the base Au/MgO and the iron modified catalyst unambiguously revealed the formation of ionic gold in the presence of CO/O2 mixture. The formation of this species was strongly hindered in catalyst modified by manganese. Results obtained strongly support the need for the formation of "metal ion - metal nanocluster" ensemble sites. These sites are involved in the activation of the CO molecule prior to its reaction with atomic oxygen. It is suggested that at subambient temperature these ensemble sites contain mainly ionic forms of gold, while at higher temperature iron or manganese ions are involved in CO activation.

A modified electrochemical noise (EN) technique has been applied to monitor corrosion wear of TiN-coated ASP23 steel and TiN-coated AISI 316 stainless steel sliding against corundum in 0.5 M H2SO4. Experimental results show that the EN technique can sensitively detect potential and current variations during a corrosion-wear process. Corrosion-wear mechanisms of TiN coatings depend on their substrate properties. If the substrate is passive, such as AISI 316 stainless steel, the potential and current variations reflect the properties of the coating. Depassivation and repassivation alternately take place on the tribo-activated wear area during the steady-state phase. If the substrate is active, such as ASP23 tool steel, the electrochemical noise is dominated by dissolution of the substrate at the pinholes and the hydrogen evolution all over the exposed surface.

Sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Timiskaming series trend west-ward across the property of the Upper Canada mine, forming part of the north limb of a regional syncline which is truncated on the south by the Larder Lake fault zone. A wide zone of schistosity strikes east-west through the sediments and volcanics. The central portion of this zone is occupied by a system of narrow gouge-filled fractures in highly altered rocks, mainly tuff, trachyte, trachyte porphyry and syenite porphyry. The alteration zones have developed through repeated stages of deformation and accompanying metamorphism. The initial stages were marked by carbonatization and sericitization, followed by silicification and the introduction of minor amounts of sulphide minerals. Gold was finally de-posited in relatively late fractures within silicified zones and pyrite. Repeated movements along the Up-per Canada break have offset post-ore dykes of minette and diabase, and have resulted in minor displacements within the orebodies.

Hence this study focused on reducing defects at mills and cast-house using six sigma approaches. The use of six sigma approach will help the production experts to determine the gap between its operation and world class process. Practical data from First Aluminium Rolling mills were presented and analysed and mini improvement projects were proposed based on organisation need to achieve excellence. This study encourages aluminium alloy industries to pursue process improvement projects on the basis of analysis on data obtained from their shop floor, hence ensuring that through this, recovery is improved and cost of poor quality is reduced.INTRODUCTION Engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986 introduced a new concept in which a set of techniques and tools are used for process improvement by controlling variations (defects). Résumé : la mine d?Elhammam, opération du groupe minier Marocain Managem, est située au sud de la ville de Meknes à 63 km, elle exploite un gisement de fluorine depuis 1974. La minéralisation se présente sous forme de deux filons principaux orientés N45° avec un pendage variant de 65 à 90° NW, entre ces deux filons on note la présence d?une succession de filons satellites sécants. La méthode d?exploitation pratiquée depuis le démarrage de la mine est celle des chambres magasins, elle assure une cadence d?extraction annuelle de 250000 tonnes. Cette méthode favorisée par une très bonne compétence mécanique des épontes de la minéralisation a offert à l?exploitation une rentabilité très satisfaisante grâce à son faible coût mine. Les travaux de recherche géologique menés en parallèle à l?exploitation ont permis la découverte d?un nouveau secteur ?K-Est Gouaïda? (KEG) qui fait l?extension nord-est du gisement principal, la minéralisation de ce secteur se présente sous forme de deux filons très étendus latéralement (900 m d?extension) et présentant une puissance minéralisée irrégulière et très faible 1.2 m en moyenne, les épontes de la minéralisation sont constituées de schistes de qualité mécanique très faible. Vers la fin des années 1990, l?exploitation s?est orientée vers le développement minier du secteur KEG. Ce développement consiste à faire le choix adéquat de la méthode et de l?infrastructure minière pour l?exploitation de ce nouveau secteur, KEG. La méthode des chambres magasins, pratiquée dans le gisement principal avec un faible coût mine, n?est pas praticable dans le nouveau secteur à cause de la qualité de ses terrains, l?irrégularité de la morphologie de sa minéralisation et de la faible puissance des ses filons. Seule la méthode des tranches montantes remblayées (TMR) peut être applicable techniquement vu les spécifications suscitées de la nouvelle minéralisation, la TMR doit être appliquée sous sa variante mécanisée pour faire face au niveau exigé de la production. Après le pilotage de l?exploitation par TMR mécanisée dans le secteur KEG, il a été confirmé que cette méthode donne une grande satisfaction en matière de stabilité des terrains, sécurité, sélectivité, productivité et récupération du gisement, néanmoins elle reste pénalisée par un coût mine trop élevé pour garder le niveau de rentabilité recherché par l?exploitation d?un produit de faible valeur marchande telle que la fluorine. Dans l?objectif de rentabiliser l?exploitation du secteur KEG qui représente en réserves l?équivalent d?une durée de vie de 4 à 5 ans et d?assurer la pérennité de l?activité, l?exploitation en collaboration avec Reminex, la filiale d?ingénierie de Managem, a adapté une nouvelle variante de la TMR mécanisée dite TMR avec plan incliné sur remblai. Cette nouvelle variante de la TMR consiste à réduire au maximum les travaux dans le stérile en reconstituant un plan incliné sur le remblai à l?intérieur des filons pour faire évoluer en vertical l?exploitation des tranches en montant vers la tête d?un panneau de minerai. La variante des tranches montantes remblayées mécanisées avec plan incliné sur remblai a été imaginée et appliquer en 1978 dans la mine de fluorine de Burc située au Sud-Ouest de la France (Sicard et Mailloux, 1983). Imaginée pour une cadence annuelle de 30000 tonnes et une mécanisation très modérée cette variante a été adaptée par l?exploitation de la mine d?Elhammam en 2002 pour un haut degré de mécanisation et une cadence d?extraction annuelle de 250000 tonnes de minerai. Cette variante de la TMR est appliquée depuis le début de 2003 dans les chantiers du secteur KEG, elle présente les mêmes avantages techniques que la TMR mécanisée classique et elle a permis la réduction du volume des travaux d?infrastructure de 17.65 m à 6.25 m de travaux par 1000 tonnes de minerai. Ceci s?est traduit par une baisse du coût technique de la mine de 34% ce qui a donné un nouveau souffle à la mine pour assurer sa production et pour poursuivre la recherche géologique d?éventuelles zones à mettre en valeur.

PREFACE THE successful conclusion of all geophysical work depends on the operator's skill and sound judgment, as well as on his knowledge of geology and geophysics. We have been fortunate enough to have as co-workers a number of very good men. Some results of their work are summarized in this paper, and it is a pleasure to acknowledge their cheerful spirit of co-operation and the enthusiasm and loyalty with which they have assisted in the building of a geophysical organization to serve the Canadian mining industry HISTORY Geophysical prospecting is commonly, but quite erroneously, regarded as something new. The name is modern, but the principle of applying physical laws to reveal the presence of hidden ore is several hundred years old. Already, at the beginning of our civilization, the need was strongly felt for methods that could indicate the presence of ore in regions where the ore-bodies were completely masked or hidden from the eye. Particularly in countries where the rocks have been eroded during periods of glaciation and later covered by a thick mantle of glacial debris, all kinds of mysterious schemes were invented to locate the hidden ore. Often magic was resorted to (for example, the divining rod), but methods based on sound principles were also developed. Such features as topography, colour and taste of surface waters, and the growth and occurrence of trees and plants, were used to reveal certain types of ore deposits. For finding bodies of iron ore, the compass was very early in use. The fact that objects of iron attract a compass needle was utilized in prospecting long bef01:e the time of Columbus, and a systematic search for bodies of iron ore by this method was organized as early as the year 1600. There are still in existence documents, dated a little over 300 years ago, which show that the Swedish Chancellor of that day, Axel Oxenstiorna, ordered dozens of sun-dial compasses from instrument makers in Germany. The Swedish Government at that time employed a great number of prospectors to search systematically for iron ore. This Government undertaking must have been quite successful, as a number of iron ore-bodies were found in areas covered by heavy overburden. These prospectors were simply Government 'geo-physicists', although they were not known by this fancy name.

Numerous advantages have been recognized for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) operating at temperatures of 500-700°C. However, there are several issues related to low temperature SOFCs, such as high electrolyte resistance and high electrode polarization. One of the routes to enhance the electrode performance, particularly for the cathode, is to use new materials with optimized microstructure. In this work, the plasma-spraying technique, recognized to have several advantages over presently used deposition techniques, was used to deposit cathode materials onto ceramic and stainless steel substrates to obtain highly porous structures. Cathode materials with composition of Lao 6Sr0.4Co02Fe0 8O3 (LSCF) were employed in the powder form. The LSCF was prepared from powder precursors with different pore formers and binder levels, or from already produced, single-phase LSCF. The (La0.8Sr0.2)0.98MnO3 (LSM) cathode material was also processed for comparison purposes. The deposition process was developed to obtain coatings with good bond strength, porosity, film thickness and residual stresses. The phase and microstructure of deposited materials were characterized using XRD and SEM.

Since the 14th CMMI conference, held in Edinburgh in 1990, at which a paper was presented by the author (Willis, 1990) reviewing the role of integrating new technology as a survival strategy for South African gold mines, considerable change has occurred in the South African mining industry. This paper reviews the current state of the industry and provides an update on the technologies discussed ten years ago. It reviews available technology and provides a broad economic assessment of these technologies if they were to be introduced in an integrated mining system with a focus on deep level mining below 3000 m. It also reviews possible future technologies currently being researched and developed by CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek).
