"Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. "With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of preconcentration in hard-rock mining operations has gained greater interest. Dense medium separation is a process that can be conducted at particle sizes from 250 to 0.50 mm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the valuable minerals. Pilot-plant case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, including mineral systems such as spodumene, sulfide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulfide ores. These case studies demonstrate that, for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20–60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90%.RÉSUMÉ Au vu de la hausse des coûts liés à l’énergie et du déclin de la teneur des minerais, le rôle de la préconcentration dans les exploitations minières en roche dure présente un intérêt croissant. La séparation (ou concentration) en milieu dense est un processus pouvant être mené sur des calibres de grains de 250 à 0.50 mm avec un rendement élevé de séparation, en fonction des caractéristiques de libération des constituants des minéraux métallifères. Sont présentées dans cet article des études de cas menées dans des usines pilotes du site de Lakefield de SGS, lesquelles incluent des systèmes de minéraux tels que le spodumène, les minerais aurifères sulfurés et les minerais sulfurés complexes. Preconcentration has been practiced in the industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, which typically require finer grind sizes and incur higher energy costs.The benefits of preconcentration are:• lower mining costs, which allows for nonselective mining;• lower process capital and operating costs (e.g., resulting from reduced grinding, flotation, and fines disposal stages);• increased ore reserves, which provides the potential to treat lower grade ore;• increased mine production without expansion of the existing plant or concentrator;• reduced overall tailings impoundment by converting the reject into a byproduct (e.g., underground backfill or aggregate);• improved efficiency of downstream processes (e.g., silica removal in electric arc furnace feed, removal of softer sliming minerals prior to grinding);• potential application to brownfield operations and greenfield projects; and• a “green” process option, which reduces processing energy consumption;– reduces mill feed;– increases stage metal recovery (higher grade feed);– increases mill metal output per tonne processed;– reduces surface plant, tailings dump, and tailings pond requirements because the plant has a small footprint and can be installed underground; and– can be applied to retreatment of old tailings dumps to recover metal values and reduce environmental impacts (e.g., dissolved metal runoff, acid drainage)."

In 1997, damage as a result of Castrol R40 entering the INCO pressure carbonyl plant carrier gas stream was becoming increasingly severe. The oil in the gas stream was adversely affecting both equipment availability and process control resulting in rising unit costs. The main source of the Castrol R40 was determined to be the carrier gas and low pressure gas blowers. Plant personnel initiated a plan to prevent the Castrol R40 from entering the carrier gas stream by replacing the mechanical shaft seals with Ferrofluidics seals on these blowers. The following paper details a brief case history of the Castrol R40 in the carrier gas including impact on the plant. This will be followed by a technical discussion of the new sealing arrangement that was developed by plant personnel, Roots Blower and Ferrofluidics. Lastly, this paper will update the status of the blower upgrade project and document the results to date.

Based on the analysis of a sealed coal mine resulting from a fire-triggered explosion, limitations were discovered in the re-entry procedures used to reduce the size of the sealed area that were being applied during the process of re-opening the mine. The analysis of two re-opening plans in a mine using mechanical ventilation showed that the estimation of the degree of damage of two air doors close to the working face with the fire was key to the identification of the optimum mine recovery plan. The operation points of airflow and air pressure of the main fan under either the doors? damaged or intact conditions can be estimated through the use of a ventilation network simulation program. Starting the main fan for a short time period and measuring its operation points of airflow and air pressure allowed their comparison with the simulated values. This procedure provided a reasonable estimation of the degree of damage of the ventilation structures and more confidence in choosing a recovery plan. Through this process, it was possible to conclude that the two doors were still intact. Consequently, the final plan of installing a new main fan in the main decline, sealing the initial upcast shaft and unsealing the auxiliary downcast shaft, was proven to be reasonable at the mine site.

The Tanco pegmatite at Bernie Lake, in the Lac du Bonnet mining district of southeastern Manitoba, is a unique deposit of Li, Rb, Cs and Ta, with substantial reserves of Be and several industrial minerals. This paper summarizes the present state of understanding the regional geology, structural setting, zoning, mineralogy and geochemistry of the pegmatite, and the mining and ore-processing methods used in its exploitation.

World wide applications for nickel use will be summarized and examples of those uses given. Nickel products are critical to many important aspects of modern society. These products are just as important for modern China as they are in other parts of the world. It is argued that future pattern of nickel use in China should be expected to be very similar to that in the rest of the developed world. Total use of nickel in products in China is already very large. In 2004, it was the largest market for stainless steel (nickel containing) in the world. A survey of Chinese stainless steel applications will be presented. Current high nickel prices have revived speculation about substitution, particularly for nickel containing stainless steels. The presentation will discuss some of the complicating factors that need to be taken into account when considering substitution. These factors are as valid in modern China as they are in other developed economies. Recent substitution efforts and the reaction to them will be examined. The Nickel Institute position regarding appropriate application of the various grades of stainless steel will be discussed. Price-motivated substitution in China, and elsewhere, will occur but it is argued that the extent will probably be limited.

Slurry pipelining, as now under-stood and practised, can only command marginal interest in Canada, as long-distance railway freight charges in this country are generally lower than slurry pipeline tariffs. Several alternatives to conventional slurry transmission are, however, now emerging, and two such alternatives are briefly discussed with reference to coal pipelining. In one, coal is transported as a suspension in oil; the other contemplates the movement of paste "slugs." Preliminary economic estimates indicate that the resulant process simplification and adoption of common carrier principles could lead to cost reductions that might make Western coal competitive with imported fuel in the power generating stations of eastern Canada. R ECENT appraisals of slurry pipelining techniques, some-what incongruously 'based upon the performance of successful installations (1,2), are making it increasingly apparent that current solids pipelining methods can only command marginal interest as methods of bulk commodity transportation (3). Mercury is a toxic element that is associated with many industrial activities including the Bayer process. Mercury is known to enter the Bayer process with the bauxite feed material and has the potential to accumulate as the process solution is recycled. This paper explores the speciation of mercury in Bayer process streams. The process parameters considered are the oxidising-reducing potential, basicity and temperature. The results of a refinery circuit survey are presented and compared with the thermodynamic predictions. Electrochemical measurements on relevant synthetic systems are also included.

The LCL&L process (Low Caustic Leaching & Liming) is a patented hydrometallurgical route developed by Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) to economically process spent pot lining (SPL) generated by aluminum cells. The three resulting end-products (carbonaceous, fluorinated and caustic liquor) are inert and have valorization possibilities. An industrial size pilot plant located in Saguenay (Quebec) was inaugurated in mid-2008 to demonstrate and optimize the technology. This paper describes characteristics of the LCL&L process and the experience acquired by RTA since the plant's start-up, including ramp-up capacity and technology challenges that were overcome. Possible end-products valorization methods are also presented. The carbonaceous end-product can be separated into carbon and brick rich fractions and used as either alternative fuel, reducing agents, or as raw material for third party processes. The development of a conversion process for the fluorinated end-product would allow its reuse as a substitute to fluorspar mineral for aluminum fluoride production. Finally concentrated caustic liquor is already valorized at the nearby RTA Vaudreuil alumina refinery.

Enargite (Cu3AsS4) belongs among refractory copper minerals with very low hydrometallurgical extractability of copper. An application of enargite leaching in acid solutions leads to simultaneous dissolution of copper and arsenic and the final leach solutions have to be treated for the separation of both elements. However, the alkaline leaching of enargite is selective. Arsenic passes into leach while produced copper sulphide represents the raw material suitable for pyrometallurgy. The hydrometallurgical processing of mineral can be influenced positively by mechanochemical route. We have shown that more than 80 % of arsenic can be extracted from enargite concentrate by atmospheric alkaline leaching at 95 °C when mechanical activation in an attritor is applied. The produced Cu2S can be further treated with elemental iron where mechanochemical intervention is applied in the second stage of enargite processing. The final product forms Cu/FeS nanocomposite from which copper nanoparticles can be easily separated. The illustrated concept of copper obtaining from copper sulphide is an example of so-called “dry” processing, as reactions in gas and liquid phases are excluded. This concept of environmentally friendly metallurgical processing can be classified as an impetus for novel technology to produce copper from enargite concentrates.

Lots 11 and 12, Range IX, Calumet island, are underlain by a Grenville metamorphic complex into which sills of tourmaline granite pegmatite have been injected. The pegmatite has an average mode-potash feldspar 65 per cent, sodic plagicdase 10 to 20 per cent, quartz 5 to 20 per cent, tourmaline 10 to 15 per cent, accessory minerals < 5 per cent; it is unzoned except for a narrow border zone. Some of the feldspar has been replaced by calcite. Microcline has been ?partially replaced by sodic plagioclase. Three varieties of tourmaline are present (black, blue, and green) and spectrographic analysis suggests progressive compositional changes during its crystallization. The presence of U- and Th-bearing minerals in the pegmatite prompted the Quebec Nickel Cor,porat10n, Ltd., to explore the possibility of developing the pegmatite but it does not appear that this is economically possible at the ? present time. Tt\e Grenville metamorphic complex consists of recrystallized limestones and calcsilicate rocks of the albite-epidoteamphibolite facies and the amphibolite facies, which were derived from sedimentary rocks. Several of these are dis-equilibrium assemblages, and retrograde metamorphism has probably formed biotite and epidote from hornblende. The schistosity of the gneisses dips steeply eastward. Numerous strike faults are roughly parallel to the schistosity and one of the pegmatite sills is bounded by such a fault, dipping at 60 ° with about one foot of fault breccia. The general structure of the map-area seems to be an asymmetrical syncline ?overturned to the west. The emplacement of the pegmatite is associated with a period of folding, metamorphism, and igneous intrusion.

Of the twelve known ore zones on the Sunro property, acquired by Cowichan Copper Co., only the "B" and "C" orebodies of the "River Zone" had been explored sufficiently to indicate the grade and tonnage. The "B" zone was selected for initial production. The portion of this orebody above the main adit level was developed for horizontal-ring, longhole mining. Ore from the stope would be scraped directly to the coarse ore bin. The lack of a suitable mill site on surface, as well as the 8,000-ft. tramming distance, led naturally to the installation ground. I N November, 1960, a lease was obtained by Co-wichan Copper Co. Ltd. (N.P.L.) from Sunro Mines Ltd., covering the main ore (River) zone of the Sunro property. A total of twelve zones had been located on the property. Nine of these lay within the leased area. "The availability of fresh water to meet present and future needs in Ontario is of concern to an increasing number of people. Rain and snow are the source of our potable water and provide, on the average, some 180,-000 billion gallons of water annually. This amount is reduced to 94 billion gallons a day as a result of the evaporation and transpiration of water and our inability to construct the necessary reservoirs for capturing surplus stream flow.The water used for domestic, irrigation, public supply and industrial purposes amounts to some 7 billion gallons daily at present and will reach 21 billion gallons daily by the year 2000; however, only about one-fifth of the water used is actually consumed, and this, along with the possibilities of water re-use, improves the water supply picture still further.The need for adequate pollution control has accompanied industrial and urban expansion and is an important factor in the extent to which our surplus water is used. In the 10-year period since the formation of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, the cost of water and sewage works constructed in the Province has exceeded one billion dollars. A special effort is now being made to control the industrial pollution situation.Numerous federal and provincial agencies are engaged in hydrologie studies in the Province, providing in-formation of benefit to those involved with water resources management."

"The original segmented intercell Optibar succeeded in reducing the magnitude and occurrence of short circuits. It also improved the specific energy consumption of the process. This paper expands the load current source concept introducing a triple segmented bar. This new bar adds immunity to dirt contacts and open circuits. Moreover, it further improves the standard deviation of current densities. As compared with industrial practices this development should accomplish an 8% specific energy reduction. Also, a plant implemented with BBS should be able to work with 12.5% higher process currents than Walker without compromising the operation.INTRODUCTIONIn 2011 the technology based on current mode was implemented at industrial scale. The success of this technology moved CIM Magazine (Lanktree, 2011) to write in the Jan 2012 issue an upfront story of this technological innovation. To cover the story, the technical reporter Graham Langtree was appointed by Peter Braul Editor of the upfront section. The article tells that “More than 40,000 tonnes of copper have been refined in a year-long test run of Optibar Inc.’s new technology at Barrick Gold’s Zaldívar copper plant in northern Chile. The new segmented intercell bars being used in the Compañía Minera Zaldívar refinery have slashed energy costs, reduced short circuits during refining and allowed the production of heftier, purer sheets of copper – gains that all promise to boost the plant’s margins. A copper refining tank house containing the cell circuits typically consumes 2,000 kWh of electricity to produce a single tonne of grade-A copper. Yet, monitoring the energy efficiency of the Optibar technology after increasing the weight of harvested copper sheets, the project’s engineers recorded a 92 kWh-per-tonne cut in energy consumption, a savings of 4.6 per cent. “Today, with the power prices we have, Optibar technology represents a potential savings for the whole plant of US$1.5 million per year,” says Robert Mayne- Nicholls, executive general manager of Barrick Gold’s Chilean operations.”"

"Mineral endowment in northern British Columbia and the Yukon Territory was assessed on the basis of geological opinion which was gathered in a quantitative framework of subjective probabilities. The survey area encompassed 364,000 square miles and was divided into 310 cells having dimensions of one degree of longitude by one-half degree of latitude. The response solicited related to tonnage, grade and number of deposits of a particular mineral in each cell. The questionnaire sought an expression of mineral endowment down to mine-able depth as distinct from economic expectations. Details on the questionnaire and responses are presented in a series of contour maps on individual commooities, which illustrate the collective occurrence picture of the respondents. The approach is largely dependent on the cooperation of an adequate number of geologists familiar with the region being examined. This approach to an assessment of the mineral endowment of a region has a wide range of applicability, from the focusing of exploration effort to aiding government and development bodies in the formulation of regional strategies and the planning, for example, of road, rail and power facilities."

Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit. This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration. The achieved plant stability and increment of ore throughput are also reported in this paper.

"Yielding bolt has been widely used for rock reinforcement in mining and civil engineering in high stress conditions. However, the interaction mechanism of yielding bolt and matrix mass is still not clear at present, and no analytical model is available to predict its reinforcement effect quantitatively. In this paper, the mainstream yielding rock bolts were reviewed firstly. After that, a coupling model is proposed to account for the interaction between yielding bolt and matrix mass. Based on the plane strain axial symmetry assumption and the incremental theory of plasticity, equilibrium equations and compatibility equations of matrix mass, and also the response of yielding rock bolt are deduced theoretically. The proposed method was programmed in Visual Basic development environment, and a semi-analytical solution for the coupling model is achieved. The reinforcement mechanism of yielding bolt in conventional tunnelling is clearly demonstrated through an illustrative case study. The reinforcement effect of yielding bolt is estimated quantitatively, and the distribution of axial force along the bolt is presented. In addition, the validity of proposed method is verified by numerical simulations. INTRODUCTIONHigh stress in surrounding rock mass can cause serious stability problems such as massive squeezing in soft rock and rock burst in hard rock. It is observed that many conventional rock bolts failed when experiencing large displacement, which implies that they are too stiff to sustain large deformation and dynamic conditions (Stillborg, 1994; Hoek et al., 1995). Yielding bolt, which can also be called energy-absorbing bolt, has been widely used for rock reinforcement in mining and civil engineering for these conditions (Neugebauer, E., 2008). This paper focuses on the static reinforcement effects of the yielding bolts with analytical method and numerical simulations."

The performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) depends on the efficiency of the cutters, which can be influenced by geological conditions and rock mass properties. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model, based on a discrete element method, was used to evaluate the effects of joint orientation and its spacing on the fragmentation process by a TBM cutter. Several models were constructed to study the effects of variable orientation; these models incorporated different spacing, variable spacing, different orientations on the fragmentation process, and different sections of the block model. Three parameters, consisting of induced tensile stress, induced shear stress and maximum displacement, were calculated. The stress in each section that forms chips was considered as critical stress; critical joint spacing and orientation in each section were determined. Results show that the critical orientation was in the range of 45 to 60º, where there was a possibility to achieve the maximum penetration rate. The critical joint spacing was 200 mm and, by increasing joint spacing, the value of critical stress decreased significantly. Furthermore, joint orientation could influence more than joint spacing in the rock cutting process.

The effect of various percentages of cold-working and recrystallization on the microstructure and hardness of commercially-pure aluminum plate, has been studied. The &apos;A critical deformation for the aluminum, has been determined. Experimentation involved cold rolling and recrystallization processes followed by quantitative metallographic practice and the hardness measurements. The raw material chosen was a plate of commercial aluminum which was cold rolled to different percentage of cold-work and then recrystallized by heat treatment at 150°C. The critical deformation percentage of aluminum was computed to be around 30% of cold-worked.
