"Conventional single heading track drifting in the hard rock mining industry has not shown any significant improvements in advance rates, despite the advent of modern track jumbos and igh speed muck handling systems .This paper presents Kiena 's experience in using a 7 ft 2 in. diameter larva Mark 6 Tunnel-Boring Machine (TBM) for driving 6000ft of drift.IntroductionKiena Gold Mines is located about 5 miles west of the town of Val d'Or, Quebec, approximately 300 miles north of Montreal. The mine commenced production in October 1981 and has gone through various expansions of ore production with 287 916 metric tonnes in 1982 to reach 453 800 metric tonnes in 1986.Due to the majority of claims being covered by a lake, a grassroots exploration drive of remote areas of the property was required to allow diamond drilling on a yearly basis. High speed sequential excavation methods (SEM) of single heading drifting in the mining industry has not progressed much in the past 20 years despite the advent of electric-hydraulic jumbos, Haggloader and Hagglund type cars. Certain examples of record SEM drifting advances have been performed in the past but only under very specific ground and cost conditions."

"Current trends of increased size, complexity, and automation of surface mining equipment necessitate more comprehensive and objective techniques for equipment comparison and selection. The field of reliability analysis provides tools to generate quantitative bases for maintenance and reliability aspects of such comparisons. Results from statistical analyses of failure and repair time data are used to perform the comparison. A case study is presented which analyzes five machines of two different technologies and three different designs.IntroductionThe surface mining industry is currently faced with a rapid evolution in production equipment. The more obvious trend in this evolution is the steady introduction of even larger machines. Parallel, and complementary, to this increase in size is the introduction or adaptation of new technologies. Together, these two trends result in new surface mining equipment designs; these designs are often more complex and may feature technologies that have yet to be proven for the application or at the scale they are now fielded.The prospect of significant automation of open pit equipment is also bound to add complexity to future equipment designs. Semi-automated features, such as drilling controllers (Aquila, 2000), have already been commercialized. Fully autonomous haul trucks have been demonstrated in open pit mines (Jackson and Zoschke, 2000). Design concepts for comprehensive teleoperation of open pit operations have been formulated (Lipsett, 1998).With this rapid availability and deployment of new technology and equipment, managers and maintainers are faced with a multitude of decisions regarding what equipment to acquire and what maintenance strategies to implement. In light of this evolution in mining equipment, it is necessary to develop better methods for making equipment management decisions (Dessureault et al., 1999; Paraszczak, 1999). The incentive for development of such techniques is that a large portion of an open pit mine’s operating cost is maintenance related, as shown in Table 1."

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallisation and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. In an expansion or a new project, a large component of the capital cost can be associated with the pressure leach step and process engineers frequently look for opportunities to mitigate costs. This paper examines a new route for increasing the capacity of an exothermic pressure oxidation leach for sulphide concentrates, sulphide and phosphide mattes and alloys.

"The mining industry continues to remain challenged. Lower commodity prices, increasing labor costs and more importantly diminishing reserves are amongst some of the primary factors contributing to the difficulties faced. Ore sorting technologies have demonstrated their potential to improve the downstream beneficiation performance. The general processing route sees all primary crushed material milled for liberation and then processed in accordance with characteristics of the gold therein, i.e.: refractory golds would require direct leaching or oxidation whilst free gold would follow the conventional cyanidation process, after gravity concentration. Ore dilution increases the associated operating costs within each stage of this process. The opportunity to process the same throughput at a higher grade can only be achieved through pre-concentration. Sensor based sorting has been examined on numerous occasions by various gold producers. Test work carried out on different bulk low grade gold ores has shown the successful applicability of ore sorting to remove waste, whilst maintaining high recovery rates of gold. The results of a combined XRT/Laser sensor sorter have shown grade improvements of over 300% from feed grades of 0,25g/t to 1,15g/t at gold recoveries of 66% and waste ejection rates of 85%. This paper presents some of the results from the work undertaken by STEINERT with respect to gold sulphide ore sorting and presents a modelled financial scenario, which can enable a company to target and reclaim low grade ores.INTRODUCTION The mining and minerals processing industry presents with many different challenges including, volatile commodity prices, increasing labor costs and more importantly diminishing reserves. Conventional processing routes will continue to play a crucial role in the beneficiation process, however innovative methods of reducing operating costs and optimizing on the overall circuit performance is where technologies such as sensor based sorting come into the fore. Sensor based sorting as a dry mechanical process not only reduces water consumption by eliminating unnecessary waste but also reduces the requirements for reagents in the downstream processes. Sensor based sorting under dry conditions presents a highly efficient alternative to wet pre-concentration methods such as dense medium separation (DMS)."

Almost every form of iron ore and carbon material has been used as a raw material in the production of pig iron in electric reduction furnaces. Experience derived from the operation of the large 33,000-kva. Tysland-Hole furnaces, however, indicates that production results are very much influenced by the raw material conditions. The author presents the principle pattern of the metallurgical structure of the interior of an electric pig iron furnace. On the basis of this, he discusses the variations of electrical and metallurgical conditions for the process which will take place with changing raw materials. The formation of a coke bed underneath the electrodes, and its influence on the furnace operation, is illustrated. "The Éléonore mine, located in the James Bay region of Northern Quebec, generates a gold bearing flotation concentrate rich in pyrrhotite. Direct leaching of the finely ground concentrate results in high cyanide consumptions and poor recoveries, so effective pre-treatment to passivate the pyrrhotite is required before leaching. Following a number of process upsets at the mine, test work was performed to better understand the requirements for passivation so a more effective operational strategy could be implemented. This paper outlines the testing and implementation of the new strategy at Éléonore.ÉLÉONORE CONCENTRATOR The Éléonore mine is located 800 km north of Montreal, in the James Bay Region of Quebec, Canada. The ore, containing gold disseminated in sulfide minerals and free fine gold in silicate gangue, is crushed in a two-stage crusher plant before being ground in a single 9,000 kW ball mill. The ball mill is in closed circuit, with about 25% of the cyclone underflow passing through a gravity plant with two, 48” Knelson concentrators. Gold recovery in the gravity circuit varies between 15 and 20%, with gravity concentrate leached daily in an Acacia intensive leach reactor. Cyclone overflow, at a target P80 of 65 microns, flows to the flotation plant where the gold bearing sulfide minerals, mainly pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite, are recovered to concentrate with a mass pull of about 5%. The flotation concentrate, typically containing between 80 and 120 g/t of gold, is thickened and finely ground using a 1500 kW Isa Mill. The finely ground concentrate is diluted, to generate a slurry with about 32% solids by weight, before feeding the leach plant. Initially the concentrate slurry is pre-treated with oxygen and lead nitrate, to passivate the sulphide minerals before cyanide is added for gold dissolution. Gold is recovered from the leached slurry using carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The flotation tailings are also thickened and gold is recovered in a dedicated leach-CIP plant."

"This study was conducted to establish the possible application of bioleaching in the pilot scale to recover valuable metals from the sulfidic tailings of Golgohar Iron Mine (Kerman, Iran). Using bioleaching processes, solvent extraction and sulfide precipitation recovery of valuable metals including, copper, cobalt and nickel from the tailing was investigated. The results showed that the optimum pH and temperature conditions relative to the bioleaching step was 1.5 and 45°C. The extraction of the metals from the low grade polymetal resource with complex mineralogy is very important from economic, environmental and technical point of views. Moreover, the proposed method has some advantages from energy saving, tailing management and creating added value from waste materials aspects.INTRODUCTION The growing demand for base metals and strategic such as: copper, nickel and cobalt as well as high-grade resource depletion has caused them, the mining industry to extract metals from low-grade resources and driven by complex mineralogy (Xie et al., 2005). Economic extraction of metals with low grade sources requires low-cost and efficient processing methods. A source with enormous potential for metals in future, secondary sources, such as: tailings mineral industries which the lack of appropriate technology and the high cost of processing weren't recoverable with previous procedures in the past. But it is possible that with develop new and efficient technologies have the economic exploitation ability. Recovery of metals from tailings resources is very important not only in terms of precious metals but also in terms of reducing environmental problems (due to heavy metals). The metals of copper, nickel and cobalt are mainly like sulfide compounds in the nature, usually for their recovery, first they make ore with flotation method to obtain the sulfide concentrate that containing valuable metals. then for the metal production, it will be melt and purification. Due to the environmental aspects, technical problems in the recovery of base metals from low grade ore and mixes, the presence of small reserves, in the past three decades they pay much attention to the use of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of base metals from these resources. These processes are classified according to the solver agent to leaching sulfates, chlorides, nitrates and amines (Hackl, 1995). Early, chloride leaching under oxidation condition in acidic or alkaline solutions was recognized the best process to produce sulfide concentrates. But then the basic processes sulfates was considered as the superior process because of being easier, a better understanding of the chemistry of leaching and recovery of base metals, especially copper from the environment easier sulfate solution with an organic solvent extraction and electro winning. The bioleaching is shown its ability on a commercial scale of low-grade sulfide minerals and ore that because of environmental reasons, the possibility of melting is not possible to them. The existing industrial base factories are based on primarily on the bioleaching and pressure leaching and recovery of cathode copper sulfate solution by extraction with organic solvents (SX) and electrowinning (EW) (Wang, 2005). Preliminary analysis has shown that valuable elements such as copper, nickel and cobalt are in the float flotation unit. Hence the plan to extract these metals from the wet tailing stream has been done."

This paper describes some of the main aspects involved in implementing the European “Equipment and Protective Systems for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres” (ATEX) Directive (No.94/9/EC) in the British mining industry by the year 2003. It provides a brief background to the Directive and considers its main objective of removing all barriers to trade in Europe. It outlines the need for the European Standards making bodies to write new editions of the ’explosion protection concept standards’ and for manufacturers to adopt new quality management procedures and develop new versions of equipment in conformity with the ATEX categories of “M1” or “M2.” Finally, it assesses the possible future relationship between the European enforcing authorities, manufacturers and users of explosion protected equipment.

Designers of combustion processes may select aerodynamic conditions which produce only superfine fly ash. Although it is not usually anticipated that this will create a problem, such as has been found to agglomerate in high-velocity gas streams, to plug mechanical dust separators in a short time, and to contribute to atmospheric pollution. The problem is a fundamental one, and may be approached in several ways. The authors, in the course of their combustion research program, had occasion to examine the agglomeration of ash, ranging from sub-micron to 17 microns in size, produced in a (coal and oil) dual-fuel-fired steam generator. Several theories, supported by extensive laboratory studies, have provided some understanding of a probable mechanism of agglomeration. As a result, certain precautions are suggested in the design and selection of combustion processes and equipment.

"The mining industry faces increasing economic, environmental and social challenges, as easier deposits deplete and ores become more difficult to mine and process; head grades decline; projects migrate to increasingly remote and difficult geographies; and the industry faces more stringent environmental and social standards. While these factors increase costs and risks, they also present opportunities for a more integrated approach to mining, processing, materials handling and waste management. Two key areas of risk are in tailings and water management. As mining and processing tonnage rates continue to increase, the disturbance footprints, water and energy consumption and scale of tailings storage facilities also rise. These factors can be mitigated by more selective mining, ore sorting and pre-concentration, and more intensive tailings dewatering. Such alternatives must be considered in conjunction with the selection of mining method, metallurgical flowsheets, major equipment selection, and key process design criteria. For example, increasing the grind size of a concentrator reduces energy consumption and eases tailings dewatering, but may cause challenges with metal recovery. Emerging technologies will be reviewed, and economic and environmental trade-offs for eco-efficient alternatives will be presented for metal sulfide mines.INTRODUCTION The metals mining industry faces significant challenges that can affect its financial viability and social license to operate. There has been a consistent decline in ore grades and a relentless push towards larger operations to capture perceived economies of scale. With these larger operations, the environmental footprint of mines has increased. Water and energy consumption, and resulting GHG emissions have also risen. Anglo American Corporation and the University of British Columbia have developed a medium-temperature oxygen pressure leaching process for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates in an acid-sulphate system (AAC/UBC process). Leaching is performed at 150°C and surfactants are added to disperse molten elemental sulphur from the unreacted sulphide surface to prevent liquid sulphur occlusion. Copper extractions of over 95% and elemental sulphur yields of around 60% were observed over a 2-hour average residence time in a continuous pilot autoclave. Sporadic blockages occurring under continuous conditions were found to be caused by the accumulation of molten elemental sulphur mixed with unreacted sulphide mineral. A batch programme of experimentation was undertaken to establish the reason for this phenomenon. Batch experiments were conducted at low pulp densities on concentrate samples with narrow size distributions and at similar solution compositions to those experienced in the pilot autoclave. The overall rate of chalcopyrite oxidation was shown, under approximately constant solution composition, to be a strong function of the total available mineral surface area. Initial copper extraction rates followed the shrinking particle kinetic model under intrinsic surface control. Deviation from shrinking particle kinetics was however observed after a certain oxidation time. Secondary electron images identified small (typically less than 20 µm) sulphur conglomerates at the point of deviation, which 'collected' unreacted chalcopyrite mineral particles and lowered the total mineral surface area available for oxidation. These sulphur clusters are thought to be the precursor for blockages experienced in the continuous pilot autoclave. These results emphasised the importance of fine grinding (P80 5-20 µm) and suggest that shorter residence times may minimise the formation of sulphur conglomerates in a continuous autoclave operating at medium temperature.

It is well-known that the particle breakage mode that occurs in a semi-autogenous mill is significantly different from that which occurs in a ball mill, enough so to warrant very different lab scale breakage tests and scale-up models. This phenomenon, at the plant scale, leads to changing process constraints depending on the particular properties of the ore. For example, hard or coarse ores might bottleneck the SAG/AG mill throughput, while the ball mills might constrain throughput when milling soft or fine ores. Because the power draw of a ball mill is fairly constant compared to that of a SAG/AG mill, periods of SAG/AG mill bottlenecks lead to increased ball mill circuit specific energy consumption and a finer grinding circuit product size, which together constitute a loss of efficiency of the overall process. Because HPGR circuit throughput is less sensitive to changes in ore hardness, this situation is less common or severe in those circuits. Furthermore, the ball mills are somewhat decoupled from the upstream crushing circuits through the use of surge bins, which also helps to mitigate this effect. As a result, ore hardness variability constitutes a significant cost penalty that should be applied to SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crusher SABC circuits when evaluating the relative economics of different grinding circuit configurations. Nevertheless, the issue is by-and-large ignored, because most current HPGR trade-off studies are based on averaged ore hardness parameters. This paper provides an estimate of the magnitude of this penalty for a typical operation by using Monte Carlo simulation methods and plant data from Freeport-McMoRan?s autogenous, semi-autogenous, and HPGR-based comminution circuits. A case study from an in-house 96K t/d sulphide project is presented to illustrate the concept. It was found that by including variability effects, the trade-off NPV of the HPGR circuit over that of the SAG mill circuit increases to $84 million from negative $33 million, effectively reversing the original decision of selecting a SAG mill circuit for the fixed hardness case.

"Abstract - The Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is located 265 km south of Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Nunavut Territory, Canada, in the west-central Slave structural province. The Izok deposit is owned 100% by Inmet Mining Corporation and represents one of the largest undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. The Izok deposit is hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks of late Archean age. The hanging-wall stratigraphy includes additional felsic volcaniclastic rocks, andesitic and basaltic flows, thin sulfide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sedimentary rocks. The felsic volcanic rocks are intruded by intermediate dikes and sills, followed by gabbroic dikes and sills. Both intrusive suites are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to the overlying flows. All lithologies are subsequently cut by younger, irregular, granitic pegmatite and diabase dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks are regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene hornfels grade. The massive sulfides occur within a large (kilometer-scale) Na-depleted sericitic alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hanging-wall rocks to the deposit are characterized by zones of muscovite- biotite-sillimanite, lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite, and locally intense silicification and sodium metasomatism. All lithologies have been affected by younger Ca-metasomatism. As currently defined, the Izok deposit comprises a cluster of five complexly zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central West, Central East, and Inukshuk lenses. The first four lenses are amenable to open-pit mining, whereas the Inukshuk lens will require underground development. The total indicated mineral resource presently stands at 16.5 million tonnes with a grade of 2.2% Cu, 11.4% Zn, 1.1% Pb, and 60 g/t Ag. Inmet Mining Corporation is presently reviewing the economic feasibility of developing the property."

"Under certain conditions useful gravity information of a reconnaissance nature can be obtained with-out measuring elevations by spirit level surveys on the ground. Gravity surveys can become part of a practical exploration program where high cost and slow progress previously hindered their utility. The advantages of the new elevation procedures are realized mainly in remote areas, in areas where ground transportation is slow and difficult and on surveys where the station spacing is large in comparison with the distance of the average optimum level shot. To utilize the advantages, transportation by helicopter or light plane is usually necessary. Methods of obtaining elevation control without leveling include: barometric altimeter survey; photogram-metric -APR spot determinations; methods involving the measurement of gravity gradients. The accuracies of these methods have been tested and compared with the normal accuracy of level surveys. It is felt that each method has its place in reconnaissance gravity work, particularly in the open areas of Northern Canada."

So stated Finance Minister Jean Chretien in his April 10, 1978 budget speech, on announcing a new measure designed to increase the productivity of Canadian industry and to assist in the creation of new technology. The effect of the new measure, which permits an income tax deduction of 150% of certain research and development (R & D ) expenditures , can reduce the after-tax cost of a marginal dollar 's worth of such expenditures to as little as 20 cents . This article discusses the income tax treatment of R& D expenditures in general, and describes in particular the income tax incentives which relate to R& D.

INTRODUCTION THE property of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited lies between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships, district of Patricia, Ontario. It is about six miles south west of the town of Red Lake, with which it is connected by an all-weather road. All orebodies found to date at the property are silicified lenticular bodies which lie within tuff beds. The ore bas a specific gravity of 2.95. It consists of mica and chlorite schist, silicified and containing a considerable amount of disseminated carbonate, and mineralized with pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite. Of these, pyrite, in coarse to fine disseminated grains, is by far the most abundant. Pyrrhotite occurs in ?the gangue material as medium to fine disseminated grains. A very small amount of arsenopyrite, in small crystals, is associated with the pyrite, and small grains of chalcopyrite occur in both gangue and pyrite. Although some of the gold present in the ore is quite coarse, a good deal of it is extremely fine.

"These are heady times for the mining industry, with strong metal prices, investor enthusiasm for the junior explorer and ready access to finance for mineral projects. Many projects were shelved in the past because of technical deficiencies — insufficient tonnes or grade, metallurgical problems, the deposit was too deep or too narrow, or the project was physically or economically under water. With the possibility of sustained metal prices, now is the time for those previously “challenged” projects to be re-evaluated and financing sought for continued development. The question is, do these deposits have reasonable prospects for economic extraction, as required by all mineral resource reporting codes? NI 43-101 defines a mineral resource as that portion of the mineral inventory that has reasonable prospects for economic extraction. However, a mineral resource is not simply an inventory of all blocks above a given cut-off grade. The spatial distribution and geological and grade continuity must also be considered. The qualified person (QP) must consider factors significant to project economics at the mineral resource estimation stage, and not just when qualifying mineral reserves. CIM Best Practice Guidelines for estimating mineral resources require the factors significant to project economics be current, reasonably developed and based on generally accepted industry practice and experience. In establishing the cut-off grade, it must realistically reflect the location, deposit scale, continuity, assumed mining method, metallurgical processes, costs and reasonable long-term metal prices appropriate for the deposit. Variations within the resource model (rock characteristics, metallurgy, mining methods, etc.) may necessitate more than one cut-off grade or economic limit in different parts of the deposit model. There must be sufficient knowledge of the metallurgical characteristics of the deposit, which should be supported by preliminary metallurgical test results."

"In the present paper, the characteristics of the granite burst under loading/unloading conditions was studied by means of both laboratory experiment and finite-discrete element method (FDEM). After gaining the mechanical properties of the granite samples under uniaxial compression conditions, the parameters taken as input arguments in the FDEM modelling were then carefully calibrated so as to provide some basic data including Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, uniaxial strength, Lame constants, cohesive strength, and frictional angle for further being used in simulating granite bursts. All the simulating results by the FDEM were basically in agreement with that obtained from the uniaxial compression test and triaxial granite bursts in laboratory, respectively. This study shows that that such computational mechanics of discontinua can be employed to gain powerful insight into the failure mechanism of granite burst, which could also be a useful tool to clarify the collapse mechanism of rock structures in rock engineering design and rock test scheme optimisation. INTRODUCTIONBased on discontinuum state a priori, discontinuous modeling techniques that are commonly referred to as discrete element methods (DEM) treat the material directly as an assembly of separate blocks or particles, which was originally proposed by Cundall (1971) and Cundall and Strack (1979) from the viewpoint of analogous molecular dynamics simulation to better account for and understand the interaction between the blocks. The distinct feature of these formulations is that a constantly changing problem of geometry and contact conditions can be addressed by solving the equations of motion using an explicit time marching scheme (most often in a ‘leap-frog’ format), while updating contact force histories as a consequence of contacts between different discrete elements and/or resulting from contacts with model boundaries (Bicanic 1998). The most notable implementations of DEMs are arguably represented by the universal distinct element code (UDEC) (Itasca Consulting Group Inc., 2013) and the particle flow code (PFC) (Itasca Consulting Group Inc., 2012). Another formulation is the discrete crack framework that is based upon some criteria for an advancement of crack front, which is coupled with extensive local and global re-meshing while simulating by numerical methods such as finite element technique, commonly using fracture theories. Certainly, it is relatively easy to trace the propagation of single crack front governed by some principles of energy release rates (Ingraffea 1997) but tracing of multiple cracks leads to topological and algorithmic complexities. Otherwise, there is no consideration of interacting cracks in these formulations of finite element or enhanced finite element techniques (e.g., in XFEM and ABAQUS)."

"In this paper a review of the current status in recycling technologies for cathode ray tubes is given for both the glass and phosphors. Particular emphasis is placed on the opportunities for the recovery of the rare earth elements (REE) from the phosphor coatings. This is placed in the market context of alternative virgin sources and some of the advantages and disadvantages for REE waste recovery. Future opportunities are explored and also some experimental detail on a low cost leach system is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe disposal of cathode ray tube (CRT) based colour televisions has accelerated world-wide with the development of high definition flat screen panels. The total number of colour CRT televisions that have been sold in the United States in the mid-20th century is estimated to have been over 2 billion (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2007), with high current rates of disposal. It is estimated that of the 20 million televisions annually discarded, 78% are send to landfill (Nnorom, Osibanjo & Ogwuegbu, 2011). However, this easily accessible item of electronics cannot only be turned into a valuable resource using the right recovery procedures, it can also prevent the substantial environmental contamination arising from improper disposal. In this review we focus on previous and current work performed on the recycling of CRT based televisions. Due to the increasing demand for rare earth metals, the main focus will be on the possibilities and challenges of recycling the fluorescent phosphor powders on the CRT’s panel glass.CATHODE RAY TUBE’S GLASS RECYCLINGConventional cathode ray tubes consist of three main parts, the panel, the funnel and the neck (Figure 1). To produce the different colours on the screen, the inside of the panel is coated with a matrix of hundreds of thousands of small phosphor dots. Each dot is one of three types of coloured phosphors, emitting either red, green or blue light. These emit light when excited by a beam of electrons generated by electron guns located in the neck of the CRT. These beams pass through holes in the shadow mask and excite the phosphor coating on the inside of the panel, to give light of variable RGB composition, see Figure 1."
