"Abstract - Camelback is a small (=200 000 tonnes), moderate grade (5%-7% Zn+Pb), volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit, which occurs within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The host rocks are tuffaceous sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member) that overlie quartz-feldspar porphyritic tufflavas (Grand Falls member). The hanging-wall sequence comprises rhyolite of the Flat Landing Brook Formation, overlain by the Forty Mile Brook tholeiitic basalt. A dike of unaltered andesite was intersected beneath the massive sulfides, but was not found in the hanging-wall sequence in the vicinity of the deposit. The stratiform part of the deposit is made up of two, steeply south dipping, subparallel massive lenses that average approximately 4 m in thickness. Each lens is zoned, with an upper part consisting mainly of a pyrite and a basal part containing pyrite, sphalerite, and galena, with Ag values. The Au content in the massive sulfides is low (average = 52 ppb for 271 samples), but tends to be enriched in the massive pyrite near the top of each lens. Oxide facies iron formation is spatially associated with the massive sulfides, and has been traced up to 1800 m along strike. Footwall hydrothermal alteration is typical of VMS systems, and is characterized by depletion in K2O and Na2O, and enrichment in MgO and Fe2O3T with proximity to massive sulfides. The massive lenses are underlain by intensely chloritic, fine-grained, tuffaceous sedimentary rocks containing locally significant sulfide (chalcopyrite > pyrite > pyrrhotite) veins, which are interpreted to represent feeder zone mineralization. Unlike many VMS deposits, there is no evidence of silicification beneath the massive sulfides at the top of the feeder zone. The oxygen isotopic compositions (d18O = -1.5‰ to -0.3‰) of hydrothermal chlorite coupled with sulfur isotopic compositions (d34S ˜ 12‰) of the massive sulfides suggest that seawater was the dominant fluid in the hydrothermal system. Normalized rare earth element diagrams show flat Ce profiles and positive Eu anomalies, indicating that modified seawater was involved in ore formation; i.e., high-temperature (=350ºC), acidic, and reduced prior to entrainment into the hydrothermal cell. Although, seawater was the dominant fluid in the sulfide-forming system, d34S values of stringer zone sulfides (8.5‰) coupled with elevated Sn (400 ppm) in one massive sulfide sample indicate that there was at least some magmatic component in the hydrothermal cell."

"The use of Ishikawa cause and effect diagrams in an analysis of requirements for improving safety and productivity at Falconbridge's Strathcona Mill is presented. The analysis lead to numerous small improvements being made with the cumulative effect being a significant improvement in both areas.INTRODUCTIONMill management in the 90's involves the major requirements to improve both safety and productivity in the workplace. These objectives, once seen as unrelated or even mutually exclusive, are now accepted as being complementary. Managers, trained either on the job (coming up through the ranks) or in an engineering discipline followed by first and second line supervisory experience are now turning to methods developed in consumer product manufacturing to ensure that all the components are in place to ensure the ore processing facilities are safe and efficient.This paper shows how management at Falconbridge' s Strathcona Mill used the Ishikawa ""fishbone"" diagram ( 1) , a method further developed by Deming(2), to put into place a comprehensive safety and productivity process. The Ishikawa/Deming concept is that no one element or program will itself continually improve a process or service. It is only by examining and then improving all the elements that are involved in the process or service that continuous improvement is obtained. The process was built on the Deming principle of worker ownership where management is the facilitator for putting into place the mechanisms whereby workers can themselves improve the operation. The process is illustrated mainly by examples of the changes made in the hope that these may be of direct help to other operations."

"The ultimate aim of the Law of the Sea Conference, held under the auspices of the United Nations, is to ensure that all aspects of the use of the sea are covered by international law. The question facing the nations of the world can be stated as: "" Who will control and benefit from the use and the wealth of the sea?""The United Nations Conference on Law of the Sea - known as UNCLOS - which reconvened in New York during the latter part of August 1978 was the third such Conference in the UN's history. The concepts of sovereignty over the territorial sea and freedom on the high seas have remained fundamental to the international law o f the sea until our time. The legal regime based on these two concepts developed initially from state practice meant that the unilateral actions taken by one or more countries were eventually accepted and followed by others.It was not until 1958, during the first Geneva Conference on the Law of the Sea (pursued in a second Conference in 1960) that the Law of the Sea was codified and modified to a certain extent by the then independent nations of the world in the four multilateral conventions on territorial sea and contiguous zone, continental shelf, high seas, and fishing and conservation of living resources.A third Conference got under way many years later when the members of the UN met in New York at the end of 1973 for preliminary discussions . This meeting stemmed largely from the need to fill gaps in existing international legislation which did not cover the new uses of the sea. The Conference was subsequently reconvened a number of times - in Caracas (1974), in Geneva (1975) and twice in New York (1976) for what was called "" substantive negotiating sessions."" A sixth session was held in New York in 1977; a seventh, held in Geneva at the beginning of 1978, recessed and reconvened in New York at the end of August 1978. This is what is referred to, in international jargon, as the seventh session of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law o f the Sea. The following dates are the principal markers of a saga which began some twenty years ago with the purpose of regulating the use of the oceans."

The system of keeping geological plans and sections for the Geco Mine at Manitouwadge, Ontario, is described. Special methods employed to save draughting time with-out sacrificing accuracy, such as the extensive use of black line prints, are discussed. The uses made of the plans and sections by the mine planning engineers in their designs of stopes, and by the blast-hole engineer in ~is preparation of blast-hole layouts, are noted. An unusual scheme for portraying the distribution of .copper, zinc and silver values within the ore zone is de-scribed. The method of estimating the grade of ore to be "blasted in each ring of blast holes is outlined, as is the method of estimating the annual ore reserves. The design of an effective but simple transparent geo-logical and mine development model, used as a display for -visitors, is discussed. A large-scale model used for the study of problems in geological structure is also de-scribed.

"International competition is presenting the Canadian steel industry with a major challenge. While Canadian companies have invested in new technology, research and development, activity by Canadian industry, in general, lags significantly behind that of its major competitors. While OECD countries increased their research and development spending during the 1980s, Canada's R&D funding levels have changed little since the early 1970s and have actually dropped since 1986, despite greater public discussion on the issue. This fact is reflected in the relatively slower pace of innovation in the Canadian steel industry, despite the efforts of both government and industry.In addition, there are a number of factors that undermine the competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry, in particular in relation to the United States. Among these are higher interest rates, labour costs and tax rates, as well as an overvalued Canadian dollar. Canadian steel companies are thus feeling the full impact of the current economic recession. This recession, combined with recent strikes, have, for example, caused serious losses for Algoma and Stelco.In spite of these objective difficulties, the Canadian steel industry has been able to survive and continues to strive for a leadership position in the world market. Since World War II, heavy investment in new technology has allowed the industry to upgrade its facilities and increase productivity, while at the same time improving quality and reducing pollution. This last point is particularly important in view of public insistence on improvements to the quality of the environment. Over the next decade, this technological innovation must be maintained and intensified if industry is to meet the challenge of international competition and attain a leadership position."

Geotechnical monitoring is a key element of the successful management of a block cave mine. The interrelationships between production and various monitoring datasets are often not realized due to a lack of data integration and appropriate 3D visualization. Timely delivery of information to ensure best cave management practices is only possible with an integrated cave management system. At Rio Tinto, a state-of-the-art cave management system (CaveCAD) has been designed and developed in cooperation with Mira Geoscience to integrate and analyze vast datasets and report this as instructive information regarding the current \u201cstatus\u201d of the cave.

The difference in age, host rock lithology, alteration and style of mineralization indicates a fundamental difference in the format ion of gold deposits in the Flin Flon and Amisk Lake areas. The Flin Flon area contains early quartz-sulfide-gold veins fo rmed within intermittently active fractures and later plutonic hosted deposits thought to be generated in a porphyry system. In the Amisk Lake area two types of gold occurrences are recognized: I) gold-quartzcarbonate- sulfide veins within or flanking fault zones and 2) structurally and stratigraphical ly controlled zones of dissem inated and vein type sulfide-gold mineralization within extrusive and intrusive rhyolite and dacite porphyries. Both types of deposits are set within supracrustal rocks. are accompanied by intense alteration haloes and were formed prior to the major deformation event suggesting an early, epigenetic hydrothermal origin.

"This paper discusses the aspects of tracking cutters related to the computer-aided design of shearer drums. A comprehensive computer analysis of drum dynamic parameters for multi-tracking tool arrangement is not presently available, as the current computer programs mainly consider the aspects of single tracking. Despite the fact that the single-tracking arrangement is recommended for efficient cutting, some major drum manufacturers have been seen to persistently adhere to multi-tracking, probably due to a lack of information. Further studies in this field are believed to contribute greatly to the current understanding of the computer-aided design of shearer drums.A number of laboratory simulation trials and long-term underground investigations were carried out in detail on tracking cutter arrangement, and an equation required for a computer program was derived. The results obtained from computer assessment of dynamic parameters for drums with multi-tracking arrangement were found to be in accordance with those of the underground trials, indicating the validity of the equations. The procedure adopted for the computer appraisal of the shearer drums designed with a multi-tracking concept, as described in this study, is therefore recommended to be considered in the currently employed computer programs."

The application of thickened/paste tailings for surface disposal has been practiced for many years but has recently started to gain wider international acceptance. With tailings ponds coming under increasing environmental scrutiny, there is growing momentum towards mine/tailings plans that greatly reduce the size or even eliminate tailings ponds completely. This paper provides examples from the author's own experiences of the application of thickened/paste tailings for surface disposal in different countries, under different climatic conditions and in different industries. The paper will also comment on current research initiatives and future trends.

Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions for the primary copper production lines as well as for non-ferrous metals starting with the primary smelting of concentrate and ending with the electrolysis. PolyMet Solutions provides the process know-how whereas SMS group supplies the plants and equipment and Mettop the key components. SMS group and Mettop also cooperate in the field of tankhouse technology. Together with Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Mettop has developed together with a parallel flow technology (METTOP-BRX Technology), allowing a current efficiency of above 98 % at a current density of 420 A/m², which is a milestone in copper electrolysis. For the secondary copper production route, SMS group and PolyMet Solutions developed an innovative refining furnace (PolyRefine) for the smelting and refining of copper scrap. The refined copper is directly charged to the Contirod line to produce copper rods and wires. The innovative cooling solutions of SMS and PolyMet Solutions come into play where furnaces have to stand the highest loads and stresses, for instance in areas of very high temperatures or temperature fluctuations, aggressive exhaust gases and slags, or at critical spots such as taphole areas. Custom-tailored cooling systems for furnace vessels make sure varying loads are compensated in a targeted and effective manner. The solutions include air cooling, spray cooling, cooling technologies with integrated copper elements such as CFM (Composite Furnace Modular) cooling systems, plate and finger coolers. The major innovation in the field of furnace cooling is the ILTEC (Ionic Liquid Cooling) Technology which paves the way for increased plant safety. This revolutionary, patented cooling technology is jointly marketed by Mettop and SMS group. It permits water-free cooling to be implemented and thus makes operation safe wherever it is applied. INTRODUCTION Non-ferrous metals or NF metals are changing the world. There is no modern industrial sector that can do without these valuable metals. Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. The importance of the non-ferrous metals market is reflected by two figures. In 2018, the production of non-ferrous metals was worth more than 237 billion Euros. An open pit a mine can be thought of as a business unit, with capital, operating and maintenance costs that exceed those of many large business enterprises. Truck-and-shovel operations have an inherent ?looseness? to them, unlike manufacturing or processing operations where production components are tightly coupled (through conveyors, material flow in pipes, assembly lines, and so on). Effective monitoring and control of truck-and-shovel operations requires a combination of both information systems and performance management. Production monitoring systems can impact operations at three levels: minute-by-minute decisions during the shift, procedures, and policies. The technology of production monitoring ranges from real-time data collection to manual entry of time card data into a computer. Time card information is too coarse to effectively manage a multi-million dollar fleet of mobile equipment, so a higher level of production monitoring is required. People issues affect whether the implementation will be a success or a disappointment. Considerations that affect the people issues are discussed, including common obstacles, and key success factors. A balanced scorecard approach must be used, since uni-dimensional measures of performance like tons produced give no indication of whether the production was achieved at the expense of another factor.

"Abstract -A test survey using the MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic system was flown over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide orebodies in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp, Canada. The results were compared with data from historical systems (INPUT, DIGHEM) used to discover the deposits. The historical data show that the two deposits have comparable conductances. However, the modern MEGATEMII system reveals that the New Insco deposit has a much slower decay than the Iso deposit, and it is, therefore, interpreted to be more conductive. The MEGATEMII anomaly maps provide estimates of the location, depth, dip, and strike of the two deposits, information that was not available from the historical anomaly maps. The signal-to-noise ratio of the MEGATEMII data is greater than the historical data, yielding more sharply defined anomalies. The investigations also included a comparison between 90 Hz and 30 Hz MEGATEMII data. The 90 Hz data were found to be useful for mapping the less conductive parts of the Iso body, whereas the 30 Hz data demonstrated that the New Insco body is more conductive. Analysis of height attenuation data over the Iso body indicates that the body could be seen by the MEGATEMII system if it were buried an additional 230 m deeper (in highly resistive material). On the other hand, the INPUT system would detect the Iso body only if it were buried no deeper than an additional 60 m. Tests with the transmitter turned off showed that, for this flight, the MEGATEMII system noise levels on the processed data are about 300 pT/s. Sommaire - Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, un ensemble de levés d’essais électromagnétiques aéroportés employant le système de MEGATEMII a été effectué au dessus des dépôts d’Iso et de New Insco, Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Les données ont été comparées avec les réponses des systèmes qui ont découvert ces deux dépôts (INPUT et DIGHEM). "Over the years, ore geologists have made innumerable observations as to the relationships of certain kinds of ore deposits to particular types of rocks and to the types of primary and secondary structures that these rocks contain. On the basis of these, the places in which to look for new are deposits are more clearly defined than they would be in an exploration program based largely or solely on concepts of ore genesis. This paper discusses the affinity of certain rock types and structures for such ore deposits as: (1) tin-tungsten associated with granitoid rocks; (2) lead-zinc of simple mineralogy in carbonate rocks; (3) massive base-metal sulphides in sedimentary or volcanic rocks; (4) massive base-metal sulphides and oxides at, or near, contacts with igneous rocks; (5) gold or gold-uranium in, or adjacent to, conglomerates; (6) shale- or sandstone-hosted copper; and (7) porphyry coppers. Additional varieties could be considered, but it appears that these examples are sufficient to demonstrate the validity of the suggestion that the use of observational characteristics is far more useful in mineral exploration than that of theories of ore genesis.As by-products of the theory of plate tectonics, many concepts have been put forward to explain how ore deposits of different kinds have been formed. Most, if not all, of these theories seem to be as valid as present-day information permits. However, do these ideas add to the ability of the ore geologist to find ore deposits? I doubt it, and offer reasons as to why I think so.To produce maximum results in any exploration program, the one that makes the greatest use of information produced about the geologic environment of the area being investigated is the one that will provide the greatest return in deposits found for the sponsors of the program. Such exploration is best designated as total exploration, and it certainly is the most effective way of uncovering such new deposits as may exist in the area being studied in particular and of adding to the sum total of nonfuel minerals deposits available to the industrial world in general."

"A lest apparatus has been developed for obtaining the relations among confining stress, porosity and percolation rate for hydraulic sand backfills. The apparatus can also be used to evaluate internal drainage characteristics and the effects of partial saturation on percolation rates. The test apparatus, test procedures and typical test data are presented in this paper.IntroductionAlthough the standard percolation test has become an accepted method of evaluating the drainage characteristics of hydraulically placed tailings backfill, it is recognized that the test results require considerable interpretation due to the following factors: (I) The results can be markedly influenced by varying sample preparation procedures, which vary the amount of material segregation in the sample . In particular, a thin layer of slimes on the top of a sample can control the flow of water into the sample. Wall edge effects can also affect the test results. (2) The in-place porosity of the backfill is not duplicated in the test sample and empirical formulae must be used to estimate the variation of percolation rate with porosity. (3) Internal drainage characteristics and the percolation rate of partly saturated fill cannot be evaluated in the standard percolation test.In addition to eliminating these problems, the compression percolation test apparatus also provides additional data on the mechanical properties of the backfill. Compressibility (or bulk modulus) is measured at different stress levels during the course of a test and this information can be used in evaluating the usefulness of the fill in providing ground control and in limiting ground subsidence. The engineering design of mine backfill is becoming an important part of the over all design of underground mine operations. The design problems are sufficently different from conventional civil engineering soil mechanics problems that new test methods and design procedures are required."
