The purpose of this paper is to present the methods used in ground water control and the considerations that affected the development of these techniques. Production at Knob Lake is currently proceeding at depths which may be as much as 200 feet below the original standing water table. In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. The Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element (REE) Project in Malawi is a near surface carbonatite-hosted deposit with synchysite and apatite as the key REE bearing minerals. A strong focus has been placed on understanding the REE mineralogy of the Songwe Hill carbonatite as REE mineralogical characterization is a crucial component at all steps, ranging from exploration to production, in the development of REE deposits. Extensive mineralogical work has been completed at Camborne School of Mines (CSM), Natural History Museum (NHM) London, British Geological Survey (BGS), Nottingham, Aberystwyth University, Wales, Mintek, South Africa, and SGS Inc. Canada (SGS). The following analytical techniques were used: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and QEMSCAN®. The detailed studies have demonstrated that while synchysite is light-REE enriched as expected, apatite, abundant in all stages of carbonatite emplacement at Songwe, is anomalously enriched in mid- to heavy-REE relative to apatite in other carbonatite deposits. The distribution of REE within synchysite and apatite at Songwe has had important implications for the direction of the metallurgical work with respect to the behaviour of light and heavy REE through the flotation and hydrometallurgical stages of the flow sheet.

"INTRODUCTIONRio Algom's involvement with the Enviro-Clear thickener began in May 1975, when tests on a laboratory waif were carried out by our Research and Development group. Commencing in June, further tests were carried out using a 3 foot diameter pilot unit. By December, a 30 foot full-scale thickener had been installed. In the near future, 3 more Enviro-Clear thickeners will be commissioned. With in the space of a year, almost $2.5 million had been committed to liquid/ solid separation facilities using the Enviro-Clear thickener. This paper briefly traces the extent and development of this commitment.BRIEF HISTORY OF QUIRKEQuirke Mine started operating in September 1956 at a rated capacity of 3,000 TOD. Because of market conditions, Quirke was shut down in December 1960. The facilities were re-opened at an increased capacity of 4,000 TPD in July 1968, by which time the demand for uranium had returned. Also, a second shaft was sunk, and by 1970, all of the ore treated in the concentrator was coming from the new Quirke II mine. The Quirke I stopes were allowed to fill with natural seepage. As well, acidic barren solution from the concentrator was pumped underground.With increasing demand for uranium, the capacity of Quirke will be further expanded to 7,000 TPD by 1978. Studies of how this expansion could best he carried out led to the consideration of a fairly new piece of equipment, the Enviro-Clear thickener, for certain operations in the concentrator. Introduction The Author As the pail of smoke and wartime destruction gradually rises from the surface of the earth, from all countries, statesmen assemble to discuss and prepare pacts and treaties which are designed to, once more, bring people of all nations to understand each other and live in harmony. Scientists and engineers throughout the world are also undergoing a drastic reconversion in their ideas and objectives. No longer do they think only in terms of destruction and twist their brains to develop more devastating weapons or to surpass production records of war machinery. They have turned their eyes and ambitions to more pleasant tasks and are taking stock of wartime developments in materials, fabricating procedures, and equipment, many of which had been carefully shrouded with a veil of secrecy, and are applying their new knowledge to the fabrication or improvement of the tools of peace. The next few years will see the gradual elimination of scores of substitutes and makeshifts, expedients which the constantly changing law of supply and demand' under wartime stress necessitated. The universal search for satisfactory substitutes, however, has resulted in a general awakening of plant engineers to the possibilities of materials with which they were relatively inexperienced, with the result that, in many instances, what was considered a substitution at the outset turned out to be more satisfactory than the original material, and, in reality, can be considered a worthwhile development. Not only have materials been explored, but existing fabricating processes have been reviewed, and others, built around the properties and characteristics of new materials, created.

"The operation of the Louvicourt Mine will have to rely on stringent grade control and on the optimization of the amount of blocked ore made available per given development effort. All of the above being necessary to obtain the highest throughput at the lowest mining cost.To assist in achieving these objectives, the need for production of a competent fill with short curing time was recognized early by the project partners. As well, operating costs associated with the selected method should be as low as possible while meeting the technical criteria.A feasibility study comparing filling methods showed potential benefits in all aspects of the paste fill use, except for its higher capital costs and increased operational complexity. This last consideration was tackled by the conservative design approach adopted in the flowsheet development of the paste fill plant.Since commissioning of the plant has just been completed at this time, the paper will focus on the feasibility study and its background, the design of the plant and testwork results at pilot plant and plant scale.RésuméLe succès de l 'opération de Louvicourt Mine dépendra d' un contrôle serré des teneurs du minerai et de la maximisation de la quantité de minerai développée par effort uni ta ire. Radar Technologies are successful implemented in the military industry since decades and recently found their way in the mining industry as level gauge radars for bin applications. The latest generation of microwave radar sensors are capable to provide geometrical data of the surrounding area of mining machines, too. Radar sensors are an improvement to laser scanners as they are more robust and able to penetrate dust and mist. Radar sensors will be the key source for operator assistance systems. indurad and RWTH Aachen University conducted a large series of tests at open pit mines and underground coal mines to determine the potential of the new two dimensional Dual Range Radar iDRR. Several applications were determined as highly feasible and are now completed respectively in the implementation stage. The authors are giving an insight in the experimental results, the implementation and an outlook of future applications for this technology.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. "Numerous studies of the Bousquet mining district, Abitibi, Quebec, mainly following the successive discoveries of new gold deposits over the past two decades, have led to a broad range of genetic hypotheses for their gold deposition. A compilation of petrographic, structural, and geochemical data indicates that the gold deposits are composed chiefly of pyritic schists derived from felsic and mafic volcanic and volcaniclastic protoliths, and of auriferous massive pyrite hosted by pyritic schists of felsic affinity. The deposits are typically located within zones of local pyrite enrichment and advanced-argillic alteration which are in turn enclosed within much larger zones of disseminated pyrite included in regional-scale, commonly anastomosing, zones of sericitic alteration.Overprinting relationships between three sets of folds and foliations indicate that the host-rocks of the gold deposits have retained the imprint of three successive generations of ductile deformation resulting from regional dynamothermal metamorphism. Sericitic and advanced-argillic alteration, together with massive sulphide deposition, are interpreted to have taken place prior to the onset of the ductile deformation, based on observations 1) of altered fragments of wallrocks which are enclosed within massive sulphide bodies and were thus preserved through regional metamorphism, 2) of the syntectonic deformed pyrite, and3) of the syn-tectonic porphyroblasts of andalusite, garnet and plagioclase. The orebodies are oblate to prolate, and the pyrite-gold mineralization is typically vein-type, distributed in foliation-oblique and foliation-parallel veins. The gold-bearing structures postdate all foliations, and are associated with retrograde alteration assemblages that are pseudomorphic after pea~-metamorphic porphyroblasts in host-rocks, and with cataclasticfabrics that overprint syn-metamorphic pressure-solution features and annealing fabrics in pyrite.Retrograde gold-bearing assemblages indicate a chemical disequilibrium between the ore-forming fluids and their host rocks. This disequilibrium rules out the possibility that gold was remobilized from its own host, and suggests, instead, that the ore-forming fluids and their metal contents had an allochtonous source. Stable and radiogenic isotope analyses indicate that the fluids had a metamorphic origin, and that the associated alteration took place after the culmination of the Kenoran orogeny."

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. In 1990, the European Space Agency (ESA) initiated a technology transfer program to stimulate the wider use of technology developed by the European and Canadian space communities. This paper focuses on the method of technology transfer from the space industry to terrestrial industries, with a focus on the mining resource sector within a program called the Harsh Environments Initiative (HEI) created in 1997. Other resource sector applications include forestry and oil & gas. C-CORE in partnership with the Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) supported by ESA, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and European R&D organizations conduct projects to promote and demonstrate the transfer of innovative technologies from space to non-space industries. Space programs have and continue to develop new knowledge for extra-terrestrial application, e.g., satellite earth observation, manned missions and unmanned planetary exploration. Many of which hold the potential for application on land and ocean. Currently, space technologies of interest to the mine sector range from robotics and image analysis to sensors, software and advanced materials. The HEI works to identify and apply these types of technologies in the areas of automated/tele-controlled mine operations and mine monitoring.

"INTRODUCTIONTo bring a mining property into production in the Canadian High Arctic a company must deal with the harsh environment, the short shipping season and the high cost of labour. In trying to minimize the effect of these factors, the concept of a barge-mounted process plant was investigated as an alternative to the conventionally built concentrator. Cominco's previous experience gained at the Black Angel Mine on Greenland's west coast suggested that this would be a practical alternative.The normal shipping season at Little Cornwallis Island is approximately six weeks long, from mid-August to the end of September. All equipment and materials must be delivered during this small ''shipping window."" The logistics problems are enormous; if the conventional approach had been used the major process equipment would have been delivered to Little Cornwallis Island at the same time as the completed barge actually was! Construction would also be starting at the start of the worst climatic conditions, the Arctic winter. Nine months production was gained by opting for the ""Barge"" approach.What the Arctic winters do to the shipping season, so do they affect the productivity and the cost of labour. Construction labour must come from southern Canada. Thus higher transportation costs and higher wage rates, with more overtime and incentives, increase the labour costs to approximately 50% over normal southern rates. Couple these rates with the lower productivity involved with men working in the extreme cold temperatures and the net effort is worth avoiding. A process plant being constructed in Southern Canada can take advantage of more accessible labour at lower costs, increased productivity and a faster construction schedule. The barge concept must still deliver the equipment and materials during the ""shipping window"" but it can in the completed form."

The Cigar Lake project will develop the world’s second largest high-grade uranium deposit. The Cigar Lake Phase 1 orebody contains approximately 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7% U3O8. The mine, to be operated by Cameco Corporation, will use a unique water jet boring mining method to cut previously frozen ore. A distinctive ore handling design is required to handle the highgrade ore slurry exiting the mining machines. The ore will be crushed and ground underground, with the ore slurry then pumped to surface. Loaded into purpose-designed containers on tractor-trailer units, the ore slurry will be trucked to Cogema Resources Incorporated’s McClean Lake mill. McClean Lake will leach all of the ore. Forty-three percent of the resulting uranium solution will remain at McClean Lake for processing into yellowcake. The other 57% of the uranium solution will be shipped to Cameco’s Rabbit Lake mill for processing into yellowcake there. Detailed design for the Cigar Lake project is now underway. Barring regulatory or market delays, production could start up as soon as early 2006.

"The Waite-Amulet, an important copper-zinc mine, lies astride the Duprat-Dufresnoy township boundary about 8 miles northwest of Noranda, Quebec. It is an amalgamation of two properties, that of the former WaiteAckerman- Montgomery Mines to the north and that of Amulet Mines, Limited, to the south. This amalgamation took place in 1933. The description that follows is confined to the Amulet section.Ore was first discovered on the Amulet property in the autumn of 1924. The C Shaft and Upper A orebodies were found in 1925 and the F orebody in 1929, the latter by diamond drilling under a swamp. Under the present management, Lower A ore body was discovered by diamond drilling at a depth of 700 to 1,200 feet in 1938, and new ore was found from the old C Shaft workings between 1943 and 1945.From April 15th to October 20th, 1930, 60,291 tons of ore was produced from the Amulet. During the second half of this period, the ore averaged 4.2 per cent copper, 16.3 per cent zinc, and 0.02 oz. gold and 3.35 oz. silver per ton. Due to the prevailing low prices of metals, there was no further production until July, 1937. Output was greatly accelerated in 1940 when the newly found Lower A orebody assumed the main burden of production. Up to January 1st, 1946, mill reports indicate the treatment of the following ore: GENERAL GEOLOGYFig. 1 shows the geology of the entire property. To the east is the Lake Dufault granodiorite stock and to the west the Flavrian Lake granite mass. Around the granodiorite and separating the Waite from: the Amulet section is an older diorite intrusion. The ore occurs in a series of lavas that form a broad anticline pitching eastward at a relatively low angle into the Lake Dufault intrusives. There are several steep east-west faults. The late Powell diabase dyke is shown, also the general areas of strong dalmatianite alteration, a type closely associated with the sulphide mineralization."

"Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area since May of 1957. The ore body is located i11 the Huronion sediments on the north limb of the Quirke Lake syncline. Minerals of metallurgical significance are brannerite, uraninite and monazite. Gangue minerals include quartz, chlorite, sericite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and rutile. Silica content of the ore is greater than 75 % and pyrite-pyrrhotite content around 7 %. Specific gravity of the ore is 2.75.The Denison flowsheet is based on sulphuric acid leaching to extract the uranium values from the ore followed by liquid-solid separation to wash the uranium-bearing solution from the barren ore. The resultant pregnant solution is concentrated and purified by ion exchange followed by two-stage precipitation with ammonia to produce an ammonium yellow-cake.Elliot Lake ores require high acid concentrations and high temperatures to extract the uranium from brannerite and monazite. Uraninite will leach at low acid concentrations as long as oxiclizing conditions exist. The whole ore must be treated so that these conditions do exist.This paper provides a description of the leaching process equipment as originally installed and major changes in that equipment to date. Process control refinements to economically improve extraction are also discussed."

Indigenous peoples are a unique stakeholder because their growing legal rights to lands and resources can often determine a project’s outcome. A project will only be successful if it is able to obtain the legal permits, withstand any judicial reviews, and gain and maintain the social license to operate. Mineral economics, as one of the foundations of mineral policy research, has grown accordingly. Policy research and analysis has been carried out within governments, university departments and the private sector. Each of these institutional environments has characteristics which influence the topics of study, the approach, the methodology and the output of the research. A brief survey of recent research activities provides illustrations of trends and developments occurring within this organizational framework.A radically different organization, the independent research institute, has begun to make an impact on policy research in recent years, and will have an increasing importance in the future. Combining certain features of the traditional research organizations, it nevertheless has important differences which are essential to its effective functioning. An overview of the formation, goals, organization and operation of one such institute is presented."

Sapping and mining have constituted an important part of siege operations ever since powder came into general use in Europe. Before this period, famine was the main weapon in the hands of the besiegers, and the history of the middle ages is replete with accounts of sieges lasting two and three years. With the advent of explosives, a position impregnable to assault might be readily won by mining under, and blowing up, its defences. The natural offensive against this method of attack is to countermine and stop the attackers underground before their objective is reached. Thus developed the art of military mining. The French and British, in the Peninsular war, were adepts at this method of warfare, and the explosion of a mine and the formation of a breach were the usual preludes to the general assault of a position. In the Crimea, at Sebastopol, the British and Russians did a lot of underground fighting, as the old maps of their galleries, now in the museum at Chatham, will testify. In the siege of Port Arthur, in still later times, the Japanese and Russians were hard at it as well.
