The Lac des Iles Mine (LDI) is located approximately 100 km northwest of Thunder Bay, ON. The mine has been in operation since 1993. The initial mine production was 2,300 mtpd and increased to 15,000 mtpd following a mine expansion project that was completed in 2001. Effective Oct. 29, 2008, LDI was shut-down under care and maintenance due to low metal prices. Prior to shutting down, LDI was the only primary PGM deposit in operation in Canada and of the few found globally. The complex geology and physical properties of the deposit causes several challenges for the concentrator. This paper will discuss the solutions to the main challenges of attaining nameplate tonnage and achieve satisfactory Pd recovery and concentrate grades.

Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

The North American mining industry faces challenging emissions regulations in coming years with the introduction of new standards for off-road diesel engines. In order to remain competitive, industry stakeholders must invest in new technologies that are economically and environmentally sustainable. Westport Innovations Inc., of Vancouver B.C. has developed high pressure direct injection (HPDI) technology that allows diesel engines to run primarily on natural gas with no intrusive engine modifications, reduced emissions of NOx, PM, and CO2, with no loss in performance. This is accomplished through late-cycle high-pressure injection of natural gas directly into a diesel engine combustion chamber. The natural gas is injected at the end of the compression stroke. A small amount of diesel fuel is injected first to initiate combustion, followed by the main natural gas fuel injection. The diesel cycle and its operating characteristics are fully retained including high combustion efficiency, low speed torque, high-power output, no engine knock and fast response to load changes. Natural gas has not been an attractive fuel alternative in mining operations due to reduced performance associated with spark ignition engines and the added weight and space required for compressed natural gas tanks. However, liquefied natural gas (LNG) can be stored in a similar manner and volume to diesel fuel by virtue of its increased energy density over compressed natural gas. Cummins, Inc. of Columbus, Indiana and Westport have formed a joint venture, Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI), under which agreement the HPDI technology is being applied to a Cummins QSK engine series for high horsepower applications such as mine haul trucking. CWI, along with Komatsu Mining Systems, ENRG Fuels, Placer Dome, and Cortez Joint Venture are performing a feasibility study for the development and demonstration of an LNGfueled HPDI QSK engine in a large mine haul truck. The goal would be to demonstrate low emissions consistent with EPA ?Blue Sky? standards, high efficiency based on HPDI technology and good economics resulting from the high fuel consumption of 2,000+ hp trucks.

"The results of Mr. Klymowsky's research confirm the essential role played by oxidation products in the flotation of base metal sulphides. They invite a discussion on the subject of aeration which I may open by a brief description of the development and current practice of aeration. The first installation of pre-flotation aeration in Canadian milling practice was undertaken during the years 1928 and 29 at the then new Noranda Mill. C.G. McLachlan and his collaborators demonstrated that the flotation differential between chalcopyrite and iron sulphides was enhanced by aeration in soda ash alkaline pulps. The ores treated contained more than 80 per cent sulphides. It was proposed already then that the products of mineral oxidation assisted copper and retarded iron sulphides, at least pyrrhotite flotation. The concentration of thiosulphates was used as a measure of the progress of oxidation. Several papers by C.G. McLachlan elaborate on this subject.The aerator was also used as classifier since it was held that aeration, i.e. controlled oxidation, should go hand in hand with creation of new mineral surfaces. Grinding mills and aerators were placed in closed circuit. Figure 1. This aeration was essential for successful separation at Noranda.Following the application of aeration at Noranda the technique was applied to existing mills in N.W. Quebec. Impressive improvements in concentrate grades and recoveries were obtained. It was observedthat the zinc flotation benefitted from aeration as much as the preceding copper float. In the late forties and fifties the aerator classifier was installed in new mills associated with the Noranda group. A diagrammatic sketch of the Quemont flow-sheet (figure 2) may serve as a typical example."

"The developing world energy crisis and spiraling fuel costs have created a new public awareness and general acceptance of the need for energy conservation.Plants will have different objectives for an energy conservation program but there appears to be a common approach on how to save electrical energy.Data for a 180tph Rod Mill powered by a 750 hp motor will be used to demonstrate the relationship of energy input and production levels and to seek an optimum operating condition.Energy Conservation:Plants that have examined ways of dealing with the energy situations have concluded that energy conservation has important benefits for industry, including reduced costs, fewer production slowdowns inthe event of fuel shortages and a continued competitive position.There have been some ""startling"" conservation achievements attained through such simple plant maintenance and operating practices as reducing unnecessary lighting in buildings and yards, turning off' equipment not needed at night or over week-ends, through planning maintenance and production schedules to minimize energy use and through improving quality control to eliminate waste.Significant reducti.ons in energy use have been achieved by some rather simple but vigorous maintenance and plant engineering efforts directed at finding and fixing energy ""leaks"" rather than technological advances or major rework or redesign of facilities and equipment.An Energy Conservation Program often must overcome such obstacles as historic operating practices and emp1-oyee indifference, i.e. the ris.ing costs of fuel should result in re-examination of so1ne basic attitudes to energy conservation. Introduction The Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is the principal source of ore for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. Current production amounts to about 2,500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore a year. With approximately 1,600,000 feet of percussion drilling and 700,000 feet of diamond drilling being carried on each year, any improvements in drilling practice are important. Testing of new equipment and drill bits is a major function of the Testing Department at the mine. Tungsten carbide bits have been the subject of many tests since 1947 and have been used in operations since 1948. This paper details with the methods of testing and gives comparative data on performance and costs for tungsten carbide bits as compared to steel bits. Operational use of tungsten carbide bits started in April, 1948, and the extent of application has increased considerably since that time. The scale of employment is illustrated in Table I, which also shows other statistics on the use of carbide bits. Up to the present time eighteen types of carbide bits or tipped steel, as made by six different manufacturers, have been tested. In general, one supplier's bits have been used in operations, but some large-scale operational tests have been carried out with other types. The types tried are shown in Table II. To date they have been, the subject of 33 tests, covering the destruction of 804 bits over an observed footage of 42,586 feet.

"The selective flotation of lead, zinc and iron sulphide minerals is key to the economic performance of concentrators treating zinc-lead ores. Diagnostic metallurgy is a tool to quantify mineral behaviour as a function of particle size and liberation. The result of such analysis may be used to select preferred strategies to improve metallurgical performance. The zinc flotation circuits at three Teck Cominco operations: Sullivan, Polaris and Red Dog are compared here. This paper analyses operating data from each of these circuits. The effects of mineralogy and performance by particle size are emphasized. Metallurgical performance at these three concentrators varies substantially. Liberation size is the major factor in determining metallurgical performance. Complex mineralogy requires a fine grind to achieve effective liberation. Fine grinding results in offsetting decreases in concentrate grade through entrainment. The economic treatment of complex fine-grained deposits requires optimisation of regrind size for liberation without unduly compromising concentrate grade through gangue entrainment.INTRODUCTIONUntil recently Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. operated three mines treating zinc-lead ore. In order of increasing mineralogical complexity they are: the Polaris Mine on Little Cornwallis Island in Nunavut in the eastern Arctic, the Sullivan Mine in southeastern British Columbia and the Red Dog Mine in northwestern Alaska. Both the Polaris and Sullivan Mines have recently ceased to operate due to depletion of ore reserves.The ore type and associated gangue, mineralogy and iron solid solution vary significantly between these deposits. Excessive vibration is known to have an adverse affect on soft body tissue and operators of heavy mining equipment can be exposed to vibration that exceeds levels recommended in international guidelines (ISO 2631-1, for example). Research has found that many of the seat and suspension systems currently used in mine haul trucks and load haul dump vehicles are actually amplifying the vibration. This overview presentation will outline the current research being conducted at Laurentian University and the University of Western Ontario, and the roles of partners in rating the ability of a number of commonly used mine vehicle seats to isolate harmful vibration.

"Biotechnological approaches to decommissioning of mine waste management areas are presented in the context of sustainable environmental management. Improved design of waste sites and environmental management paves the way for the application of new technological approaches. Mining wastes are better confined, effluent quantity is reduced and the quality is expected to improve in the future. The biologically mediated treatments focus on the creation of conditions inside the waste management area which lead to the confinement of the contaminants in the inactive tailings ponds and seepage collection ponds, as well as pits or other disturbed areas which were part of the operating conditions.Biogeochemical reactions lead to three fundamental water treatment steps mediated biogeochemically , alterations in chemistry which lead to formation of particles, which then have to flocculate and be assisted to collect in the bottom of the ponds. Microbially active sediments are installed to assist particulate formation and serve as sinks for metals. In deeper sediment strata, stable forms of metals are created. Biological polishing is used to collect the particulates and relegate them to the sediment. Examples will be given of the application of these processes, to waste rock piles, open pits and tailings ponds. This paper attempts to show that, through the integration of applied biotechnological advances and the application of new approaches to decommissioning, reductions of environmental impacts by mining are possible. * Note: this paper has been presented at the 13th Annual Meeting of BIOMINETIntroductionThe role of biotechnology in decommissioning of mining waste management areas should be placed in the context of sustainable development. "A methodology is proposed for milling flowsheet design using flotation rate, selectivity and residence time distribution data. The flotation rate data and the difference in flotation rates between the main minerals to be separated are determined from laboratory batch tests. The residence time distribution (RTD) data is calculated using the tanks-in-series model assuming each flotation cell is a perfect reactor. The rate, selectivity and RTD data can be used to calculate the optimum flotation cell number in a bank for rougher/scavenger in a commercial plant.This methodology is demonstrated in a case study of a nickel sulfide ore. It is shown that miniplant rougher/scavenger data can be closely predicted from a batch test using the proposed methodology.INTRODUCTIONIt has been the trend in the past several decades that large flotation cells are increasingly used. This is largely driven by the economics as ore grades are getting lower and the rate of ore processing must be increased in order to keep mining operations economically viable. The development and evaluation of 250 to 500 m3 WEMCO SmartCell and Outokumpu TankCell flotation machines are well in progress. There are many advantages in using large cells: fewer cells, less floor space, lower power cost (although this is now being questioned for fine particle flotation), simpler circuit, simpler control, and lower auxiliary equipment cost (Arbiter, 1999). As flotation cells are getting larger, the importance of cell hydrodynamics, namely, air/slurry dispersion, power intensity, froth transfer, residence time distribution (RTD) and short-circuiting are being fully recognized (Jonaitis, 1999; Weber, et al., 1999; Gomez and Finch, 2002). It is not the intention of this paper to discuss flotation cell scale-up. The intention is to answer what is the optimum number and size of cells in a flotation bank for a given throughput. Figure 1 illustrates this problem facing design engineers. The same mean residence time required for a given throughput can be achieved in a single large cell, or many smaller cells in a row. A few cells of large size may be more cost-effective but they may not be as effective as more cells of smaller size in achieving the optimum metallurgy."

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Cette couche est composee de grains de quartz angulaires dans une matrice composee d’illite >> kaolinite + dickite. Des fragments deformes riches en argile dans cette couche presentent des assemblages mineraux tres similaires. La presence de mineraux accessoires idiomorphes dont des oxydes de titane et des aluminophosphates-sulphates suggere que ces derniers ont une origine diagenetique / hydrothermale. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."

"LocationThe Ekati Diamond mine is located at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories.Brief Description of OperationBHP Diamonds Inc. has developed Canada's first diamond mine in the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada. BHP Diamonds Inc. is part of the BHP World Minerals Division ofBHP Minerals. The project is a joint venture between manager and operator BHP (51%) and the Blackwater Group (49%). The Blackwater Group comprises Dia Met Minerals Limited, Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson.Production at the NWT diamonds project began in October with the mine officially opened October 14, 1998. The project is situated on an 853 000 acre claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT. It is about 300 km northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to the Echo Bay Lupin mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.HistoryIn 1980, Charles Fipke traced indicator minerals east from the Mackenzie River area. He discovered indicator minerals in the Lac de Gras area and staked mineral claims in 1989. A joint venture was formed between BHP and Dia Met in 1990, and in 1991, the first diamonds in the NWT were discovered at Point Lake by BHP and Dia Met. This initiated the largest staking rush in Canadian history. The joint venture launched an aggressive exploration program.Koala, Fox, and Leslie were identified in 1992 as potentially economic pipes.As soon as the project's potential was established, it was recognized that an enormous amount of work had to be completed in several areas before a mine could be developed, namely: technical evaluation of the resources; environmental and socio-economic evaluation to procure the necessary permits for the development; and engineering design to optimize mining and processing of the resource and to comply with specific environmental requirements."

"Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers, and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport, and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ‘cradle to grave’ approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or on the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure.Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill. Certain principles of the Code also pertain to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training, and dialogue with stakeholders relating to backfilling practice.For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce."

Samples of the reacting suspension particles were taken from the reaction shaft of a commercial flash furnace at different heights. The processes of matte and slag formation and morphology of the samples in the shaft were observed and analyzed. Variations of matte and slag composition in the shaft were investigated. By analyzing the samples taken from the settler at different locations, settler processes were studied such as slag formation, agglomeration and separation of matte-slag phases, Fe3O4 reduction, copper-in-slag reduction etc. In accordance with the characteristic of matte and slag formation the flash furnace can be divided into 6 functional regions, and a mechanism model called as “Micro bath process” is proposed for matte and slag formation in a commercial flash furnace. INTRODUCTION During flash smelting, concentrate particles scattered in the reaction shaft complete their oxidation reactions in suspension. The droplets produced fall into the settler beneath with a small amount of un-melted solid particles, agglomerate and separate into matte and slag layers which are tapped out from their tap holes separately. With respect to the extent of slagging reaction in the reaction shaft, there isn’t any commonly accepted understanding in literature (Kimura, Ojima, Mori & Ishii, 1986; Kemori & Kondo et al.,1988; Kemori, Denholm & Kurokawa, 1989; Fagerlund &Jalkanen, 2000). Some assume that the slagging reaction in the shaft can be ignored and some propose that all slag is produced in the shaft. With regards to the characteristics of the physical-chemical changes of concentrate particle in the reaction shaft, although there are some research results reported from pilot scale and commercial scale experiments (Kemori, Ojima & Kondo, 1988; Hagni, Vierrether & Sohn, 1988; Jorgensen, Taylor, Dickinson & Stevenson, 1992; Swinbourne, Simak & Yazawa, 2002; Kivinen & Tuominen, 2005), they are generally limited themselves to theoretical analysis and calculations. No studies are published concerned with the processes of matte and slag generation in the shaft, quantitative analysis of the processes, variations of matte and slag composition and morphologies of the melts along the axis of the shaft, etc.

"Since year 2000 the gold recovery into copper concentrate at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting has reduced considerably during the summer months. This initiated a testwork program in the fall 2003 to find reasons and solutions for such change. During the testwork mineralogical factors, water quality effects and different reagents were evaluated. The reason for the lower recovery appeared to be the sensitivity of some collectors to pulp temperature. As a result of the work different collectors are being used in the mill in the summer than in the winter. A modification to the water system was also made to provide cooler water to the mill in the summer months.INTRODUCTIONHudson Bay Mining and Smelting (HBMS) is located in Northern Manitoba, just on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The complex consist of four different mines, Callinan, Trout Lake, Konuto Lake and 777 mine including copper smelter and zinc hydrometallurgical plants producing metallic copper and zinc. Gold is a very important byproduct providing about 30% of the mine revenue. In early 1990s when the company was facing declining ore reserves and was starting to gradually close down the operations, the 777’th exploration drill hole discovered a new orebody, which initiated a $0.5 billion expansion program. The main projects were a new 777 hoist with underground development and a new zinc cell house. About $30 million was used to increase the mill throughput to the present 2.27 million tonnes or 2.5 million short tons per year. The expansion programs were finished by the end of the year 2003.Historically the gold recovery at HBMS has varied between 60 and 70%. The recovery has been somewhat lower during the summer months. Gold recovery improvement projects were conducted throughout the 1990s, but were not focused on the seasonal gold recovery variance. However, since 2000, when the water system modifications to meet the increased water demand were completed, the gold recovery during the summer has been much lower than in the past. In August 2003 gold recovery fell below 30%, which initiated a metallurgical research program to discover the reasons behind the low gold recovery in the summer."

Since that time, a great deal has been learned about this control by the people maintaining these machines as well as by the de-signers.In 1961, the first SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) or thyristor control system was installed on an excavator. This control differed from the earlier static control in that thyristor excitors supplied the generator fields directly. The development of thyristors of a sufficient rating to supply amounts of phase-controlled power to the generator fields eliminated the bulky Mag. Amp. -Rectifier combination previously used."

Material scheduling, sequencing planning and execution are the core tactical mine plan for achieving production targets that maximize the objective function of any mine production entity. This objective function is constrained by several exogenous and endogenous constraints including geological, operating, technological, marketing, financial, political, social and local field constraints. Linear and dynamic programming techniques have been used to formulate algorithms to solve the problems associated with scheduling and sequencing operations. These algorithms possess the mathematical rigor for dealing with the fundamental problems but they fail to provide adequate answers to random and dynamic process problems. Materials scheduling and sequencing are carried out within the bounds of random and dynamic fields. The functional relations between the output and dependent variables are random, and thus, current algorithms are limited in their abilities to address the problems arising from these random field processes. In this study a production simulator is developed to capture the random field process associated with materials scheduling and sequencing in an open pit environment. The algorithm incorporates a geometric pit evolution model, using solid geometry of an ellipsoidal frustum to capture material displacement dynamics. Taylor series expansion about the dimensions of the initial frustum is used to provide numerical solutions to the resulting partial differential equations governing the pushback dynamics. A production simulator, derived from the stochastic and dynamic models, is developed, validated and used to simulate the changes in the pit volume resulting from periodic incremental pushbacks and the random field process. The hybrid stochastic-optimization algorithm provides a powerful tool for addressing the random field and dynamic process problems. Combined with a hybrid stochastic-optimization dispatch system, tactical production planning and execution will be efficient and economic for achieving desired.

"According to Darcy’s equation, the rate of dewatering varies as inverse square of the surface area of the particles to be dewatered and is proportional to the pressure drop across a filter cake. Thus, the difficulty in dewatering fine mineral concentrates can be overcome by using high-pressure filters. When treating ultrafine particles, however, it is often necessary to further dewater the filter cake using a thermal dryer. In the present work, novel dewatering aids that can reduce the pressure requirement have been developed. The reagents are designed to reduce surface tension, increase particle hydrophobicity and increase capillary radius, all at the same time. They were tested for dewatering mineral and coal concentrates in both laboratory and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the use of the novel dewatering aids can substantially reduce cake moistures and, at the same time, increase throughput. In this communication, the case history of using the reagents commercially at the Garpenberg concentrator is given. The use of the novel dewatering aids allowed the operators to use a vacuum filter to obtain desired cake moistures and obviate the need to use a thermal dryer.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an integral part of mineral and coal processing operations, as it is necessary to remove water from concentrates (or clean coal) to minimize shipping costs, meet contract specifications, and recycle the process water. "The Key Lake uranium mine is the largest single uranium producer in the world. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco Corporation and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining. Cameco is the operator. Current production is fourteen million pounds per year of uranium oxide (U308).The mine's location is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca Basin approximately at latitude 57° 11 'north and longitude 105° 34' west. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.The mill was commissioned in 1983. A molybdenum plant was constructed in 1989 in response to increasing molybdenum content in the yellowcake or final product. Early test work had showed that the first ore body to be mined, the Gaertner deposit, would present few problems with regards to molybdenum in the product. However, the test work also showed that the higher molybdenum content of the Deilmann ore, the second Key Lake orebody to be mined, would result in increased molybdenum concentrations. Without the molybdenum plant, penalties would become excessive and some product might not accepted by the refineries.This paper will describe the current Key Lake mill process with emphasis on the molybdenum solvent extraction process. It will cover the chemistry of the process, process development in the mid 1980's, and current operating practices.The Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants, crushing and grinding, leaching -counter current decantation (CCD), solvent extraction, yellowcake/crystallization and bulk neutralization (Figure 1. "This paper evaluates the effect of grind size on the flotation performance of a platinum ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, in South Africa. The study was conducted on the Mintek Flotation Pilot Plant Facility, located in Johannesburg, and represented a thorough evaluation of the application of the flotation modelling methodology developed jointly by the University of Cape Town and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre at the University of Queensland through the AMIRA P9 Project. A simulation model of the pilot plant data was successfully implemented, providing a set of circuit modelling parameters that appeared to be both consistent and well correlated to measurable characteristics of the ore and the pilot circuit operating conditions. The findings indicate that the methodology that was used could well provide a useful framework for developing optimisation criteria for industrial flotation circuits in combination with appropriate feed grind size and regrind size targets.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognised that the size distribution of an ore is one of the most important factors in the determination of the performance of a flotation process. It therefore follows that the optimisation of a flotation plant cannot be considered without due recognition of the interdependence of this process with the process of comminution. There are numerous qualitative guidelines for the selection of an optimum grind target for a particular operation. Mineralogical analysis can readily provide information on liberation as a function of grind, and the desirable particle size range for optimum mineral flotation is well established in both theory and practice (see for example Trahar, 198 1). For some operations, meeting these two criteria simultaneously is relatively simple. For the majority of operations, such mineralogically “easy” deposits, if they ever existed, have long been exhausted, and the optimum grind represents a highly complex compromise between liberation and overgrinding of both desirable minerals and gangue. This is particularly true for circuits that include regrind stages, where both primary and secondary (and sometime even tertiary) grind targets must be specified. As has been pointed out in a recent paper by Bazin and Hodouin (2001), there is little or no information in the literature to assist plant engineers in the selection of optimum grind targets for complex ore deposits, so current practice is primarily based on rules-of-thumb and experience. This problem is further compounded by the fact that once grind targets have been selected for a particular operation, the assessment and adjustment of these targets based on plant surveys is extremely difficult, time consuming and expensive, and is often not attempted unless the plant significantly underperforms relative to expectation. It is therefore clear that the development of a practical quantitative approach to this problem is a high priority for flotation research and development studies."
