The Campamento Au/Ag deposit, discovered by Linear Gold in 2004, is located in Chiapas State, southern Mexico. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of Pleistocene-Pliocene andesitic volcanic rocks that have been intruded by a feldspar-phyric porphyry complex. Measured and indicated resources are 852 000 oz Au and 3.46 million ounces Ag with inferred resources of 374 000 ounces Au and 920 000 oz Ag. Resources were estimated at a 1.0 g/t Au equivalent cut-off. This is an ABSTRACT only. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

When mining of ilmenite deposits wet process of preparation is traditionally used. But this method needs large volume of water. The problem of water deficiency is characteristic of many regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Satpayevskoye ilmenite deposit is situated in the East Kazakhstan, its location has problems with water, and the mineralogical composition of rock is unfavourable: rocks contain up to 40 per cent of clays. That is why designers made a decision to use dry process of preparation for processing of these ores. Offered scheme and equipment selection are presented in this paper.

The north-eastern half of the Yilgarn Block of Archaean Rocks lies in the and zone of Western Australia. In recent years a large number of gold mines have been established there, all requiring water supplies from local groundwater. The groundwater sources that have been utilised canprise bedrock, pre-Quaternary channel deposits, and Quaternary alluvium. In the search for groundwater each type of occurrence is considered, and the choice is made on the supply potential and logistics. This paper deals with groundwater in bedrock. Using examples, sane principles of the geology of groundwater occurrence are illustrated.

In 1975 the US Bureau of Mines (BOM) under contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), began a systematic mineral resource evaluation of Indian reservations in the United States. The purpose of the BIA/BOM program was to stimulate economic development on Indian lands through exploration and mining ventures with the mining industry. Since that time, 109 phase I reports (literature studies) and nearly 45 phase II and phase III (field studies) reports have been written by the BOM. The various tribes in conjunction with the BIA have access to these reports for decision making regarding mineral resource development.

REGCHEM is a geochemical database containing stream sediment geochemical analyses compiled from open file mining company exploration reports. The database contains data on over 21 000 samples that have each been analysed for several elements such as gold, silver, arsenic, copper, lead and, zinc.   REGCHEM is supported by GEOEXPL - a custom written computer software application which operates under Microsoft Access. The data can be plotted as maps using a geographic information system (GIS) package called MapInfo, which can incorporate data from other data sets such as mineral deposit sites from the geological resource map database, GERM.

Gravity concentration of gold is an important facet of gold processing technology in Western Australia. While great interest has been directed at gold leaching technology and considerable developments achieved, gravity concentration has received much less attention and this paper provides an update on the current practice and developments that have been achieved in recent years.A survey of 72 gold processing plants in Western Australia was conducted in 1991 and some 31 questionnaires were returned for analysis. Of these, 19 plants were using gravity concentration and this paper highlights some of the features of these operations.

Surface geological observations are predominantly two-dimensional but can be expanded into three dimensions using geophysical techniques. These techniques have proved succ- essful in the past and will be utilised more frequently in future mineral exploration. Geophysical training establishments must recog- nize future requirements and teach geophysics as part of a broad earth science course as well as a specialised geophysical course. Central- isation of teaching skills, the use of high- technology in the classroom, and greater interaction between academic and industry staff are recommended as a means of ensuring a vibrant geophysical training base in Australia, for the geophysicist of the future.

The detailed engineering of a coal preparation plant is important from the point of view of optimum constructibility, operational security, ease of maintenance, operating costs, meeting environmental goals, safety, plant housekeeping and reduced corrosion and erosion. This paper reviews the several large coking coal preparation plants engineered by Fluor Australia in the past 10 years, and changes and trends apparent for detailed engineering of future plants. Areas of engineering to be covered are coal feed preparation, conveyor design, plant layout, electrics and instrumentation, noise attenuation, erosion and corrosion protection, magnetite handling, rejects and tailings disposal and coal stockpiling and blending.

Results obtained from linear sweep voltammetry at a graphite anode in cryolite-alumina melts are presented, together with those obtained from a chronopotentiometric investigation of the influence of dissolved metal. The results, consistent with both production information and other fundamental studies, showed that the following two reactions occur at the anode.Equation 1Al (dissolved) ? Al3+ + 3eThe latter accounted for some of the loss in currentefficiency.The rate of the former reaction is limited by the slow desorption of the CO from the electrode surface. Mass transfer conditions, and hence cell design, influence the importance of the second reaction.

A study has been made of the influence of bentonite type on the wet strengths, dry strengths and drying rates of pressed iron ore pellets. Measurements of the influence of bentonite on the kinetics of growth of pellets are also reported. The results show that bentonite decreases the rate of growth of pellets and the drying rates of pellets while increases are observed in both wet and dry strengths. The results have been interpreted in terms of the physical and chemical charact- istics of the bentonite and the suitability of a given bentonite for particular pelletising operations has been discussed.

This project evaluated the performance of nine passive treatment methods by studying 137 treatment units in eight eastern states. Performance was normalised according to construction cost, projected service life and kilograms of acid load treated. Results were dimensioned as $/kg of acid load treated/year. These costs were then compared to those of chemical treatment. Sites that achieved acid load reductions at costs below those of chemical treatment were considered successful. In addition to evaluating the performance of the treatment methods, this paper describes the various passive treatment systems, their applications and performance data for individual treatment units.

Although most N.S.W. coal mines contain large amounts of combustible materials such as coal and timber, the introduction of mechanisation has extended the range of combustible materials now found underground. The role of combustible material in a fire is not clearly understood and as a result the assessment of these materials for flammability by small and large scale tests is doubtful. Extensive research has been carried out on the toxic and irritating gases evolved during the combustion of plastics. However, most autopsies report death due to carbon monoxide inhalation because the combined toxicity of smoke and fire gases is unknown.

Within the Ross River Basin, the following types of water were collected and analysed; 19 streams, 24 wells and bores together with 19 samples from the Ross River Dam. The waters were found to contain up to 269 ppm of silica and, although they meet the requirements for industry in all other respects, this extremely high figure means that two basic guidelines should be followed. All steam generation units, except those less than 150 psi should employ hot lime zeolite softening, demineralization or evaporation to remove silica. Cooling systems should only operate on a once through basis.

The aim of this paper is to examine the problems confronting the planner, designer, constructor and management when rehabilitating the works associated with road building- and including quarry and borrow areas. The importance of further investigation into the many factors involved, including species, methods of planting and aftercare is stressed as is the need for trained personnel and the consequential availability of specialised training courses. Emphasis is placed upon the relevance of a rational and unemotional approach to rehabilitation with respect to the landscape and to the high degree of co-ordination and co-operation between all disciplines involved.

The design of water and ore addition points has an important bearing on the ease of operation of a grinding circuit. The nature of some of the design decisions and the possible options of the designer are discussed. For example, design decisions determine the ease of alteration and measurement of flowrate, the ease of maintenance, and the effectiveness of feed- back control loops which maintain material inputs (water and ore) at required values. To illustrate discussion in the paper, a grinding circuit which contains one rod mill and one ball mill in series is used. Practical ramifications of desigl decisions :;ne stressed.

This presentation addresses the sources and weighting of project risk in coarse gold deposits with relevance to experiences at the Ballarat mine and Castlemaine goldfield. With sample representation and reliability often a source of great error in the resource estimation of coarse gold deposits, it follows that this matter should be of greatest risk to a mining project - but is it? What are the costs and efforts required to best quantify the sampling error due to nuggetty effect? After all, the main problem in Victorian gold mining ventures in the current decade is not the amount of gold available, but defi ning which portion of it can be converted to Ore Reserves or more so profitable gold bars. The author postulates that greater risk to the project lies in the geological interpretation and matching resource spatial parameters to mining methods, than the degree of uncertainty related to grade due to nuggetty gold. Recent experience in the Victorian goldfi elds is that the investor market has already severely discounted Mineral Resources reported in accordance with The JORC Code - so if they don't believe in the capacity to upgrade the resource why should we? To this end, Castlemaine Goldfi elds Ltd at its Ballarat gold project does not intend to estimate its gold mineralisation for public release, instead choosing to focus on the geological interpretation and mine planning elements. So with coarse gold deposits, is your Mineral Resource reported with The JORC Code a glass half full or half empty? Our mining forefathers in Victoria had no predictive tools which could define resources to any degree and yet were successful. By over emphasis on the definition of mineral resources and particularly the sampling error, are we ignoring the basics of cost control, solid geological interpretations and maximum mining flexibility. The placement of sulfidic waste below the groundwater table ensures limited interaction with the hydrosphere and suppression of sulfide oxidation. However, if sulfidic waste is placed above the groundwater table and remains uncovered, the backfill becomes part of the unsaturated zone and is exposed to atmospheric oxygen and leaching. This study aims to establish the leaching behaviour of sulfidic waste placed above the groundwater table and the impact of such leachate on the local aquifer at the Thalanga base metal mine. Mining of the Thalanga copper-lead-zinc deposit resulted in a large final mining void (600 m + 150 m + 70 m) and extensive underground workings. The underground workings were partly filled with tailings and the open pit was partly backfilled with acid producing sulfidic waste rock. In addition, the pit serves as a sink for acidic run-off from adjacent waste rock piles and mine workings. To date, the backfill of sulfidic waste rock placed into the pit has not been capped with benign materials and for most of the dry season, the surface of the backfill is covered by melanterite-type efflorescences. Results of kinetic column leach experiments conducted on the sulfidic waste indicate that Cd, Cu, Zn and SO4 rich waters migrate from the backfilled sulfidic waste into the local unconfined aquifer. However, the seepage of alkaline (pH 7.3 - 8.0), high conductivity (>10 000 ¦S/cm) tailings waters into the remaining pit void clearly shows that the acid leachate originating from the sulfidic waste rock does not impact beyond the waste repository and its immediate environment. Geochemical modelling implies that minimal or no mixing occurs between the acid waste rock leachate and the alkaline tailings waters.

Oxy-ACETYLENE system of welding and cutting is at present practised in two forms, which may be described as the high and lowpressure systems. In the high-pressure system the two gases, oxygen and acetylene, are delivered. to the blow-pipe under pressure from properly constructed trade cylinders. Oxygen cylinders are in two sizes, each containing 100 and 200 cub. ft. of gas respectively. These cylinders are charged to a pressure of 120 atmospheres, or 1800 lb. per sq. in. approximately. The acetylene cylinders are made in one size as far as the writer knows, and contain 200 cub. ft. of acetylene gas at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. Each cylinder is provided with a valve and connection for attaching a regulator to "break down" the high pressure in the cylinders to the necessary low working pressure of the blow-pipes, and to deliver the two gases at a constant pressure irrespective of the variable pressures in the cylinders. These regulators can be adjusted down to as low as 1 lb. and are provided with two pressure gaugesone reading the contents of the cylinder in atmospheres, and the other the working pressure in lb. per sq. in. The high-pressure, or "two cylinder" system is compact and can readily be transported from place to place in the works. For this purpose the two cylinders are mounted on an easy-running 4-wheeled truck, which the operator and assistant find no difficulty in manipulating. In the low-pressure system the two gases are delivered to the blow-pipe, one from the oxygen cylinder and the other from the acetylene gas generating plant, which consists of the following:Generating cylinder, half filled with water, into which the cathoide is plunged.
