The operation of the cyanide-sensitive Mintek/TB1 kegold electrode was studied in the laboratory, with regard to equilibration time and drift, the effects of pH, stirring, salinity, dissolved oxygen, zinc and copper(I) ions. Methods for valid calibration in the range 20-600 mg(NaCN)/L and pH values in the range 9 - 12 in the absence of copper were also studied. Increasing the salinity beyond a threshold of 40 g(NaCI)/L improves calibration and measurement. The sensitivity is 91 mV per decade change in the concentration of ionic cyanide, and output is reproducible to within 10 mV with attention to the factors listed above. However, salinity of 40 g(NaCI)/L also sensitises the electrode to interference by copper(1) ions. This copper sensitivity seems capable of saturation, suggesting a research strategy for possible remedies.

Qiagong skarn iron (copper) deposit is located in Xietongmen County of Tibet, China (N 29¦52Æ14.9ö, E 88¦24Æ10.3ö). It is situated at the middle-western Gangdese porphyry copper-belt. Mineralisation is related to a Himalayan porphyry intrusion, with the mineralised body occurring at the contact zone between the Tertiary Takena Formation carbonate rocks and Himalayan monzonitic granite porphyry. The melt, melt-fluid and fluid inclusions were observed in early quartz, with most abundant fluid inclusions in quartz, calcite and garnet from the skarn. The geology and inclusion assemblage show a close relationship between iron (copper) mineralisation and a Himalayan porphyry intrusion. Based on preliminary inclusion studies, this paper discussed the characteristics, evolution of ore-forming fluid and affiliation to the Himalayan porphyry intrusion. This paper deals with the design and implementation of a 17 MW (nominal) surface cooling installation at Impala Platinum No 14 shaft located in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa.The cooling requirements included the installation of a surface ammonia refrigeration plant complete with the storage of hot and cold mine service water for underground use. It was also necessary to install a surface bulk air-cooling facility, which cools 400 kg/s of ventilation air going to the underground workings. Primary cooling is to the surface bulk air cooler. The cooling duty of a surface bulk air cooler is heavily dependent on the ambient wet-bulb temperature. Because of the daily wet-bulb temperature variation in this part of the world, use was made of a cold thermal storage facility of four million litres. The excess chilled water is stored during the night, for use by the main drilling shift during the day. This keeps the refrigeration machines as close as possible to full load during the summer, thus maximising the use of the capital expenditure. This paper discusses the control philosophy used to maximise the cooling output, as well as the thermal process. The project consisted of two phases resulting from the underground development phases of the mine. The first phase started in January 1999 and was commissioned by the end of the same year in record time. The final commissioning of the second phase took place at the end of 2002. The most difficult part of the construction phase was the tunnelling of a subsurface air duct from the bulk air cooler to the operating vertical shaft. This was done without disruption to the hoisting of men, material and ore in the shaft. Owing to the size of the refrigeration machines, the ammonia quantities involved and the application on a mine (no ammonia can go underground, either in the service water or in the mine air) special precautions had to be taken. South Africa has developed high standards for ammonia refrigeration plants used on mines, which will be partially dealt with in this paper.

Mineral sands make up only 3% of the value of mineral production in WA. However, the distribution of mining operations, close to the more highly populated south-west coastal areas, and the wide range of land-tenures and land-uses involved has resulted in the most complex range of regulatory procedures found anywhere in the State's mining industry.Mineral sands are mined on private agricultural and "minerals-to-owner" land, State forests, nature reserves, coastal reserves and vacant Crown land. Local Government authorities, State Government departments and private landholders can, depending on the land tenure, be involved in setting the environmental conditions for mining operations and supervising subsequent rehabilitation. In the past, rehabilitation was predominantly aimed at establishing an agricultural land-use after mining; however, it is now necessary for mining companies to rehabilitate mined areas to a much wider range of end land-uses.

Knelson concentrators are commonly used to recover fine liberated gold in gold processing plants. The decision to employ a gravity gold circuit consisting of centrifugal devices such as Knelsons is primarily taken on the results of GRG tests, among other considerations. While the GRG test is considered a material characterisation test, which is useful in the design stages, its use in evaluating the performance of an existing unit is questionable. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that it is time consuming and costly. This paper examines the validity of the GRG test for performance evaluation and discusses alternative test work that can be performed to evaluate the performance characteristics of an operating machine. Principles that are useful in selecting optimal operating parameters, such as optimal fluidising water flow rate for a given ore/machine combination, are also discussed and illustrated with laboratory and plant data.

Studies of many types and purposes are being carried out constantly by mining, minerals processing and other operating companies. Frequently, the staff requirements and special skills lie outside the resources of the operating companies, and needs arise for external consult- ing services. We examine the natures of a range of studies, the factors that influence whether they be carried out in-house or externally and then discuss the manner of execution. Aspects of both good and bad practice are highlighted in order to arrive at the basic principles that give the most benefit from study work. While the bulk of the discussion relates specifically to the execution of external studies of process plant projects, many of the observations can be applied equally to the execution of studies by one department of a large organisation for another, and also to studies of capital projects other than those involving process plant facilities.

There is a wide variety of industrial pastes or non-settling slurries pumped in mining, dredging and reclamation projects as products, refuse and tails. The types and/or names of some of the common ones are alumina red mud, phosphate clays, tar sands mature fine tails, tar sands (CT) consolidated clays and fly ash. The pipeline performance or friction of these varies dramatically with the type, its concentration and the particulars of the actual slurry making it difficult to select pumping equipment and to design associated pipelines. The GIW Hydraulic Laboratory in Grovetown Georgia has tested a number of these slurries over the last 30 years for various mining customers. Where available in the public domain and/or where permission has been obtained, the results of those tests are presented in this paper in a form usable for pipeline and pump system designers and users.

In Morwell Open Cut brown coal mine, the overburden 'firehole' materials which have resulted from ancient coal fires vary-from hard baked clays to firm laminated lacustrine clays. The need to pre-strip designated areas to reduce the slope height and attain safe digging conditions for the bucket wheel excavator operation is now accepted practice at the open cut mine. In this study, the inherent spatial variability of undrained shear strength of the clay materials has been incorporated in a visco plastic, finite element based, probabilistic slope stability analysis. Data on the costs of initial pre-stripping, excavation and slope failure are collected to provide an economic basis for the optimisation of the design of the overburden batters in Morwell Open Cut. This improved stability modelling is enabling costly pre-stripping to be minimised while ensuring acceptable slope stability conditions and minimising the risk to personnel and plant.

In surface mining, studies of the kinematics of blasted rocks using high speed film/video image analysis have allowed the estimation of the starting time, direction and magnitude of visible movement of fixed sections of the free face. Horizontal displacement versus time plots from discrete targets at the face generally report changes in slope over very small time intervals. These changes indicate step increases in velocity due to the action of explosive gases. In practice, the onset of rock mass movement, different to localised spalling, has been associated with a response time which exceeds the combined times of detonation, propagation and reflection of stress waves. This time is referred to as minimum response or burden movement time. As an engineering index, burden movement time has been used to provide guidelines for the selection of inter-hole and inter-row delay sequences in production blasting. With respect to improving breakage and fragmentation, it has been demonstrated that the delay interval between adjacent explosive charges should be less than the expected burden movement time. Similarly to reduce confinement between rows, delay intervals should exceed the expected burden movement time. The Hybrid Stress Blasting Model (HSBM) is a modelling framework that dynamically links an ideal and non-ideal explosives detonation code to a geomechanical rock model. This blast simulation tool is aimed at analysing the role played by different explosive formulations in fragmenting and/or damaging various rock types under different degrees of confinement. In the current framework, the rock behaviour under extremely high pressures and loading rates is calibrated from shock tests and the role of the explosive in fracture growth is accounted for and assumes a compressible fluid flowing through the explicit fracture network. The model is being developed as part of an international collaborative research project funded by a consortium of companies comprised of explosive and equipment suppliers and major mining houses. As part of the development and validation of the HSBM project, data from literature addressing the kinematics of the rock mass (ie burden displacement, face velocities and response times) has been collated and used to evaluate the current version of the code. A series of numerical experiments have been conducted with the view to: evaluate the response of the rock mass to changes in burden distance given by the impact of both stress waves and radial gas flow pressure;compare the modelling outcomes in terms of displacement, response time and face velocities to documented field observations; andcompare stress induced and stress/gas induced modes in terms of burden displacement outcomes. Results from these experiments have shown that in its current form the model is able to capture the trends observed and measured in practice. This is with respect to the simulation of burden displacement, response time and average face velocities for different geometries and charging conditions. The experiments have served as consistency checks which form part of an ongoing and comprehensive evaluation and validation of the HSBM code also aimed at addressing some of its current limitations.

When ore is being selected from a regularised block model, a common procedure is to accept as ore any block whose iron content exceeds a cut-off value, and whose content in each contaminant analyte is below an appropriate cut-off value. This method defines a quadrant within the multidimensional analyte space, such that any block lying within the quadrant is accepted as ore and any block lying outside the quadrant is rejected as waste. The cut-off levels can be adjusted to maximise ore tonnage at a target grade (or analyte vector). When the method is applied to a project comprising multiple pits with systematically differing grades, it is found that ore tonnage at target grade is maximised if different cut-off quadrants are used for the different pits. This is apparently illogical, because it implies that an ore block from one pit may be accepted as ore, but an identical block from another pit is rejected as waste, even when ore from both pits is to be blended into the same product and there are no production cost differences between the pits. The paradox is an example of the ætheory of the second bestÆ: if there are multiple conditions for optimality and one condition is broken, then obeying the other conditions may not be the best policy. The problem lies with the quadrant cut-off method, which is shown to be inconsistent even for selecting ore from a single pit. A criterion that is inconsistent cannot be optimal. It is shown that a linear composite cut-off function provides maximum ore tonnage, and that a single composite cut-off criterion is consistent and optimal over multiple pits. Further, it is shown that a composite cut-off function not only maximises ore tonnage at a specified composition, but also can be used to select ore so as to maximise project value, if marginal costs and values are available.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2013. Nickel ores from three different mines, Digger Rocks, Cosmic Boy and Flying Fox, are treated at the Forrestania concentration plant. The ore types vary from oxidised supergene ores to primary pyrrhotite+pentlandite ores. Mineralogical investigations on the ore and process samples have been carried out in different stages of process development. One of the studies was done with the samples collected from the flotation circuit in 19 June 1994 when the Cosmic Boy ore was processed. The process products were screened, and the size fractions were analysed for the main elements by appropriate analytical methods. Mineralogy of the products was studied microscopically and composition of the sulphides was analysed with an electron microprobe. Liberation of the main sulphides in the flotation feed was determined with the point-counting method, and weight percentages of the minerals were calculated using chemical and mineralogical data. The typical sulphide assemblage of the Cosmic Boy ore is violarite, pentlandite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. Violarite dominates over pentlandite (ratio being 70 per cent to 30 per cent), and pyrrhotite is strongly replaced with pyrite and magnetite. One of the most common mineralogical features of this ore type is secondary magnetite, which occurs as narrow rims in porous violarite or in association with secondary pyrite. Serpentine, talc and chlorite are the main gangue minerals. In the milled feed (76 per cent -74 ¦m) locked particles between nickel and iron sulphides are common. About 41 per cent of total pentlandite occurs as pure liberated particles, and 33 per cent as locked grains with violarite. Liberation degree of violarite is 55 per cent, and the most common type of locked particles is violarite+magnetite, carrying about 20 per cent of total violarite. To achieve a recovery of 80 per cent for pentlandite, all the particles containing at least 50 vol-% pentlandite should be floated into the nickel concentrate. Correspondingly recovery of 80 per cent can be reached for violarite if all the particles containing at least 65 vol-% violarite are floated.

Arsenic residues from BHAS Refinery operations are currently treated to form a calcium arsenic compound and stored in lined dams on site. Laboratory and large scale work on these residues has resulted in the development of a hydrometallurgical process for production of arsenic trioxide. The process also recovers the material from the storage dams. The residues are hot water leached to produce an alkaline arsenic liquor. This liquor is mixed with material from the storage dams and lime to form a calcium arsenic precipitate. The precipitate is then reacted with sulphuric acid to form gypsum for return to the main plant, and an acidic arsenical solution. Metallurgical gas containing 3-6% sulphur dioxide is bubbled through the solution and on cooling arsenic trioxide is precipitated. The product contains in excess of 95% arsenic trioxide. Installation of a plant at Port Pirie based on this process is being evaluated by BRAS.

Mineral exploration management has undergone major changes particularly in the last decade. Parallel to these changes in management, and partially responsible for them, have been the changes in governmental laws and regulations at both National and State levels reinforced by a highly competitive climate created by the exploration boom in Australia. The influence of overseas methods and approaches have been married to the Australian techniques resulting in a management climate which is not only familiar with the technical aspects of exploration, but is also familiar with the personnel, economic and legal phases associated with the expenditure of very large sums of money. The utilization of all the geosciences coupled with mathematical models and computer techniques for pre-selection and assessment of areas are now normal aids used in management decisions. Management techniques developed and being developed will ensure that successful exploration will be carried out if sufficient incentives are guaranteed.

A short study showing how first dry fill and later hydraulic sand fill has allowed mining to continue immediately adjacent to worked out areas in a mine 75 years old. This paper is a case study of filling in an old mine where for 30 years filling was not important until ground troubles were experienced after a series of parallel shrink stopes were pulled empty., Dry fill was distributed from the surface via a system of passes and conveyor belts. With the stabilization of the ground it then became possible to continue mining beside and above the old stopes using totally sealed and decanted hydraulic sand fill. A brief description of the dry fill is given and then more technical details of the hydraulic fill. The necessity for a well trained and experienced hydraulic fill crew is discussed along with the problems of filling small stopes in broken ground.

EARLY HISTORYIt is 91 years since the epic discovery of gold at the eastern end of Kalgoorlie's main street appropriately named Hannan's Street after the prospector who found the first gold here on17 June, 1893.The Spirit that motivated the early prospectors in their search for gold in this thirsty sun-burned land, unmapped, uncompromising and difficult is characteristic of gold prospectors the world over. Conditions have changed since then substituting comparative comfort for previous austerity and privation, but the quest-ing spirit, the everlasting optimism, the perseverance in the face of frustration .and disappointment still exists.It exists with the prospector who more often than not is a company geologist; it exists with the shareholder enjoying through his investment a vicarious participation in this wonderful, exciting industry and not the least with those people who have chosen the goldmining industry as their career.

Examination of Ihe calcination and carbonic acid leaching behaviour of a number of Australian magnesites shows that there are substantial differences between the massively crystalline and the cryptocrystalline forms of magnesites. Crude magnesias formed by calcination of the massive variety of magnesite have considerably smaller surface area and show lower rates of reaction with carbonic acid when compared With those derived from cryptocrystalline magnesites. In order lO producc a rcactivc magncsia from massive magnesite, the calcination conditions must be carefully controlled over a narrow temperature range (eg 680-720°C). For the cryptocrystalline calcines, the temperature of formation has little effect on reactivity.The results confirm the general applicability of the calcination/carbonic acid leach process for producing magnesia from magnesitc. If a mixed crystalline/cryplocrystalline feed is to be processed, then processing conditions must be optimized in terms of the behaviour of the crystalline component of the feed.

Open pit planning and scheduling play a significant role in establishing, maintaining and improving the economics of open pit mining ventures.The development of an open pit plan and schedule involves consideration of the following elements:ò the market for the mineral, ò the mineral deposit,ò the treatment process, ò the external factors,ò the mining method,ò the scale of operations, ò the open pit design,ò the open pit schedule,ò the calculation of economic performance, andò the implementation of the open pit plan and schedule.The above factors are described and discussed. Open pit planning and scheduling is the linkage which enables a mineral deposit amenable to open pit mining to meet a market requirement for the particular mineral. To effect this linkage the open pit planner should have a good detailed appreciation of both the mineral deposit and the market.

Study of coal oxidation at low temperatures forms the basis of investigating the inherent properties of spontaneous combustion of coal. In general, the process of coal oxidation at low temperatures is very complex, involving many factors. Experiments examining the properties of oxidation and ignition of coal have been carried out. Based upon the results of these experiments, the catastrophe properties in the process of coal oxidation are analysed and the mechanism of catastrophe is proved for the ignition of coal. A folding catastrophe model is also established for the process of coal oxidation. Results obtained show that the process of coal oxidation to ignition is discontinuous, where the coal-environment system yields structure destabilisation. The system can jump from one stable attractor to another. The research results presented in this paper help to show the irregularities of coal oxidation at low temperatures and how to pursue effective control measures.

A cry that is often heard from front-line employees, particularly as a mine grows or circumstances change is "We used to be one big team but now they have set up teams for different functions - we don't know what's going on and we don't share resources any more. We used to just get in and do what had to be done, now we can't.". It usually occurs after management decides that, with the increasing mine complexity, functions and accountabilities of a manageable size need to be identified and defined for individuals and teams to facilitate optimum performance. However, as the statement indicates, these changes have often not delivered all the intended benefits. This paper will explore the reasons why the full benefits have not been realised and will identify actions which can be taken to improve the likelihood of optimal outcomes.
