The geochemistry of waste rock from mining operations is critical to the development of acidity-related environmental problems during mining operations, and following mine closure. Failure to recognise the potential for waste rock to produce acidic oxidation products may cause mobilisation of heavy metals into ground and surface waters, and create heavy metal levels in soils which are toxic to plants, causing the failure of revegetation programs. Although more usually associated with wet tropical environments, the potential exists for these problems to occur even in and regions such as the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia unless appropriate pre-planning is undertaken.Acidity-related mine waste problems can be extremely expensive to rectify, but can be avoided by waste rock characterisation, and pre-planning of waste rock deposition based on this information. Integration of knowledge of waste rock geochemistry with geotechnical engineering, and application to likely problems, is essential for the successful planning and implementation of cost-effective strategies to avoid problems occurring. Pre-planning to avoid problems is likely to be significantly less expensive in most cases than remedial actions to rectify problems after they have occurred, and in fact may involve no additional cost if it requires only rescheduling or redesign of existing or planned Activities.

In another paper the author described the electrolytic preparation of highly-purified lead. One of the most difficult parts, yet perhaps the most essential part, of that research was to ensure, firstly, that the purification process should be effective; secondly, that it should remain effective; thirdly, that the lead should not be contaminated during the tests that were done on it. All this necessitated periodic analyses of the lead.The purpose of this paper is to describe the work done by the author to check the accuracy of some known rapid methods for the estimation of impurities in highly-purified lead, with the intention of applying them to the control of the electrolytic process above-mentioned.METHODS ALREADY IN USEThe literature sets out accurate methods for the estimation of impurities in lead, but these methods are both lengthy and expensive. For example, the method described by Hemingway is used in the Port Pirie laboratory of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., but it requires a sample as large as 1000 grm., and the time required to analyse a sample extends over days, and is too long to allow of quick control over a running process. This method was used by the Associated Smelters to obtain the analyses quoted in another paper by the author.

This paper describes the characteristics of blasting which set it apart from other methods of breaking rock. The mechanism of rock breakage and the influence of rock proper- ties are then discussed. The strain and fragmentation produced by a cylindrical charge does not change once the charge is longer than 16 blasthole diameters. The influence of bench geometry, charge length and drill diameter are then examined. It is shown that spherical charges have advantages over long slender cylindrical charges. By selection of the appropriate drill diameter, explosive and charge configuration the optimum blasting practice for a given rock to give suitable fragmentation and muckpile profile for sub- sequent handling can be found. The fragmentat- ion depends not only on rock and explosive properties but also on the pattern which dictates how effectively the cracking is utilised. The size distribution of the fragments is given by the Rosin - Rammler equation. Undesirable cracking of the rock in the final wall can be controlled by the careful design of blasts as they approach the final wall. Finally, it is concluded that because of the distance to which blasting can fracture and then displace rock it is suited for the breakage of large volumes of rock.

Nearly eighteen months ago Newmont Waihi Operations joined with the local district council and members of the Waihi community in the initiation and running of a community liaison forum.   This forum û the Waihi Community Consultative Committee (WCCC) û was set up with the objective of improving communication, providing a forum for discussion and ultimately working through a range of issues relating to the future of the town and district after the projected closure of Martha Mine in late-2006.   After 18 months of meetings where all represented groups have presented their views, the challenge now is to work together to investigate likely options, seek sources of funding, produce business proposals and plan for the future of Waihi in what we call the Golden Legacy Project.   This paper backgrounds the companyÆs experiences to date, the issues the group has addressed and its proposals for the future. Methods employed to set up an effective community liaison forum are considered, drawing on specific examples from the WCCC. The actions and structures required to ensure effective and ongoing community æbuy inÆ at all levels are also discussed.   This paper develops themes addressed in Taking it to the Streets presented in 2003.

The Curragh mine has complex operating conditions. The mine operates in four seams to produce two coal qualities and is divided into five pits which have different qualities and coal preparation characteristics. The combination of all of the necessary controls to achieve maximum resource utilisation has necessitated the development of suitable software to assist the quality control engineering function. The required software had to be able to plan the optimum yield of coking coal whilst achieving the quality parameters for the coking coal and co-produced steam coal. The program has been designed to evaluate all of the mine faces available for coking coal production. The optimisation of coking coal production is planned and co-produced middlings steam coal determined. The optimum steam coal product is determined using the middlings in combination with bypass production.The computer software to carry out these functions has been designed by using an exploration data base as the raw data source. The program accesses this data and uses a coal preparation prediction program to determine the yield vs. ash relationship for each coal face. A linear program selects the optimum -combination based upon equal incremental ash values. The final output lists feed tonnages, coal preparation conditions, product tonnages and full coal quality data.

The risks faced by organisations are part of a risk continuum. They can be evaluated in terms of hazard, uncertainty and opportunity as well as by the degree of influence they have on conformance, operating performance and strategic objectives. This paper discusses the application of risk management techniques for mitigating blasting hazards, reducing blasting output variability, and implementing blast improvement opportunities. Effective risk management practices can identify and evaluate risks across all levels of the continuum and can deliver realistic assessments of the likelihood and impact of risks on the companyÆs safety and business objectives. This paper does not attempt to present technical details about blasting, rather it aims to provide enough blasting context and examples so that the practical benefits of applying the risk management process to blasting can be fully appreciated. The topics discussed include: explosive management plan; statistical process control; quality blasting, rock-on-ground; Blast Management; Mine to Mill optimisation; and blasting information systems. The concept of a blasting risk management system employing a continuous improvement loop is also introduced. On reflection the insights presented should be extremely useful for observing and understanding which risk face has management focus at a mine site or for a blast site.

The flotation circuit handling Peko ore at Peko Mines N.L. was examined in July 1970 with a view to determining simple changes in circuitry or reagents which could improve the grade and recovery of the final copper concentrates. The investigation included sampling over one shift followed by detailed testing of the samples by sizing-assays, sizing-mineralogy and sizing-liberation. Mass balances were carried out over total streams, the component minerals and the copper contents. Some laboratory work was carried out to assess the effect of salinity on flotation. In order to handle the sizing-mineralogy calculations a computer programme was set up. The raw data were corrected for locking factors, then mineral and elemental distributions cal- culated for each screen fraction and the total sample. Calculated assays from grain counting were compared with chemical assays. Recoveries through the size-ranges re- vealed very rapid flotation of copper minerals at sizes below 350 mesh. This pointed to a possible circuit improvement by desliming rougher tailings ahead of the scavenger stage. A strong correlation was found between water in concentrates and gangue recovery for the subsieve sizes. In this study, the effect of hydrodynamic parameters on the iron ore reverse was investigated in a mechanical flotation cell. The work carries out using the case study of Iron ore from Vale in Brazil. The influence of hydrodynamic factors such as froth height, impeller speed, superficial gas velocity and solids percentage were evaluated on the quartz flotation. The results showed that the hydrodynamic conditions have a great effect on the flotation performance, especially on the fine and coarse quartz. The size-by-size analysis of the froth products showed that froth height, impeller speed, superficial gas velocity and solids percentage have a significant effect on true flotation quartz particles. The increase in the froth height decreased the recovery of quartz particles. The increase in the impeller speed increases the recovery of quartz particles to an optimum. The increase in the superficial gas velocity improved the flotation of coarse quartz particles. The increase in the solids percentage increases the recovery of quartz particles.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. Underground development and production has continued to intersect these structures with the result that an integrated programme of geological, hydrogeological modelling and operational project work has been required to dewater the mine ahead of the descending stoping fronts.This paper will detail these programmes.CITATION:Lawolo, R, Isles, J, Evert, J, Valenza, A and King, S, 2017. The results of a systematic geochemical survey of rare elements are applied to elucidate genetic relations in a suite of rocks and to predict the probability of mineralization. The geology, radioactivity, major element geochemistry and classification of the main intrusives are described. The distribution of a group of rare elements, their concentration trends and the bearing these have on the emplacement sequence of the rocks are considered in some detail. The guides for exploration in the Pilanesberg that emerge are listed and some areas which substantiate predictions are described briefly. It is concluded that a study of rare element trends can make a considerable contribution as an exploration tool and for clarifying relations between the members of rock suites.

The Civil Defence has provided shelters for more than 50% of the population. Some of these shelters are put into rock. Since rock installations give large resis- tance against weapon effects and also by advan- tage can be used for several purposes in peace- time, an interesting development has taken place the last decades. In towns and cities you will find sport halls, swimming pools, bowling and shooting ranges etc in rock, which easely can be conver- ted to civil defence shelters. This research work is concerned with an investigation of the fracture toughness of sandstone, siltstone, and coal. Tensile failure trades have been examined with three different specimen geonetries, i.e; rectangular bar, round bar (in three point bending), and diametral compression discs. The Stress intensity approach, and J-integral methods were used to evaluate fracture toughness. Results from both approaches are discussed. True crack length was determined after pre-cracking, using the compliance calibration technique. Fracture toughness results of sandstone are independent of crack length and the size of the specimen. Fracture toughness may hence be regarded as a material property for sandstone. In cxnntrast fracture toughness values for !siltstone and coal are dependent on crack Length.

Multiple operating points for mine fans are a problem that fan and mining engineers must constantly be aware of in mine/fan systems. In a single-fan system, unstable conditions can be avoided by restricting fan operation to the "normal operating range." When mine fans are operated in parallel, the situation becomes a little more complicated. Multiple operating points are more often encountered and the fan user must be aware of these multiple points to have a suitable set of operating conditions. However, for fans in parallel, the engineer can plot the combined characteristic in a relatively straightforward manner and thus can avoid conditions that would cause instability in the mine/fan system.

This paper aims to present the evolution of the mining method in the Prince Lyell orebody. Initial strategy and practical experience are detailed as are the reasons for and benefits of changes to the method since 1972 when underground mining began. This section of the paper starts with ten series and concludes with 40 series which was completed in 1989/90.In addition, to update the series of papers written by various authors over the past ten years on Mount Lyell, a review of the experience in the current 50 series lift of mining will be given. As well, the basic planning guidelines are discussed for 60 series - the final lift of the Prince Lyell orebody.

Shortwall continuous mining as first introduced at Burwood colliery, and currently being used at John Darling, Lambton, and Corrimal collieries, is a method of coal winning which was pioneered in the Newcastle district. The system uses individual hydraulic self-advancing chocks for roof support and the coal winning operation is by continuous miners and shuttle cars. Where physical conditions are suitable the system provides a safe, efficient and economically viable basis for pillar extraction. Shortwall operations have been conducted successfully in the Victoria and Dudley seam, near the coastal fringe of the Newcastle district and are now being tried out in the more difficult conditions of the Bulli seam in the Illawarra district.

At the LKAB, Iron Ore Mine, Kiruna, Sweden a preliminary investigation into the reliability characteristics of a fleet of load-haul-dump machines has shown that the hydraulic system is one of the most critical parts. Therefore, hydraulic system was selected for study and analysis through condition monitoring devices so that failure can be controlled or at least the failure consequences can be minimized.The hydraulic system has two different problems; one is that the contamination level is too high and the other is high temperature during operation. At high temperature, seals and tubes are a problem, because they stiffen due to carbonization, which leads to increasing leakage. The pumps and restrictions were responsible for the main temperature increase.

The Emperor gold deposit occurs on the western margin of a 5 Ma caldera in a large, mafic shoshonitic shield volcano on the island of Viti Levu, Fiji. Products from two major pulses of post-caldera intermediate volcanism filled the caldera. Caldera collapse-related steep and flat faults and zones of shattered rock provided per- meable conduits for vertical and lateral fluid migration and favourable sites for ore deposition. One large hydrothermal system, operating concurr- ently with extrusion of the second pulse of resurgent volcanism, may have produced porphyry- style alteration within the caldera, epithermal mineralization at Vatukoula, and weakly minera- lized, siliceous veins and breccias in an outflow zone northeast of Vatukoula.

The Mount Tom Price Concentrator, which contains a heavy medium cyclone plant for beneficiation of the -6+0.5mm fraction of low grade iron ore, is described. Testwork was carried out on an opportune basis over a period exceeding twelve months, to evaluate the separation performance of the heavy medium cyclones. Plastic density tracers were used and ore samples were taken and analysed. The effect of operating medium specific gravity (S.G.) on the separation parameters, the iron grade of the sinks product, and the mass and iron recoveries were investigated. Also examined were the differences in perform- ance between particles of different size. The implications of the findings for plant oper- ation are discussed.
