Activity-composition-temperature relations for both gold and nickel have been determined for the solid and liquid states of the gold-nickel system by the application of the Margules equations. These relations are in satisfactory agreement with activity measurements of nickel in the solid state, the observed phase boundaries of the system between 700 and 1725°K, as well as being consistent with data on the enthalpy of mixing.

In contrast with mining in areas close to the main centres, mining in remote areas is characterised by comparatively high initial investment and relatively high running cost for the life of the mine. This is because of:the real cost of establishing and running the operation at a location distant from the necessary infrastructure; and the perceived risks priced into their costs by the multitude of suppliers involved in the project. Optimal co-operation between the mine and the supplier in developing the right rela tionship and the correct technical solution permit both cost elements to be reduced. This re duction may well mean the difference between success and failure. This paper examines the possibilities for optimising the contribution of the equipment supplier to the overall success of the process. Issues covered include the necessity to provide more than merely equipment fit for the purpose , but also the need to maximise the benefits of equipment ownership over the life of the mine. A simple method of determining the optimum timing for equipment replacement or rebuilding is proposed . Furthermore the maintenance contract (or performance agreement) is suggested as a means of leveraging the supplierÆs commitment to the mining operation. The specific examples are based on experience with mobile equipment but the methodology has relevance to other equipment and supplies.

The subject of government involvement in industry is, to say the least, a touchy one. For many it conjures up thoughts of socialisation or nationalisation. For others it is a desirable objective and is seen as a means of social reform by giving government a greater say in the control and distribution of human, financial and natural resources for the betterment of the community. Whatever your point of view, it is difficult to deny that government involvement exists to lesser or greater degrees in all industries. The mining industry is no exception and the degree of government involvement is probably greater than it is in other industries. I think it is important to remember when talking about government involvement in industry to recognise that there are different types of involvement and that all governments have a right, if they so desire, to become involved in whatever way they choose. The decision of a government to increase its direct or indirect involvement must, of course, be taken in the national interest. Governments, if we are still old fashioned enough to believe in ministerial and electoral responsibility, must make up their own minds about whether their actions are in the national interest and they must be prepared to accept the consequences of that action, good or bad. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) was formed in 1994 to promote development and adoption of international standards for estimation and reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. The CRIRSCO standards have been accepted by most mining companies and professional societies worldwide. Market regulators from Australia, South Africa and Canada require that these standards be followed when releasing public information. Among these requirements is the use of specific definitions for what constitutes exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. If such information is publicly disclosed in must be estimated by a Competent or Qualified Person. In the United States of America, public disclosures are regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC does not recognise the CRIRSCO guidelines, and some of the SEC requirements for public release of information are materially different from those applicable in other countries. The CRIRSCO definitions and the Competent Person requirements are reviewed and compared with those of the SEC. The organisation of the SEC and its rule making process are briefly discussed. Ongoing efforts to bring the US regulatory requirements closer to those applicable in other countries are presented, as well as other activities that CRIRSCO is entertaining with the United Nations, the International Accounting Standard Board and other international organisations to reach the objective of worldwide standardisation of reporting procedures.

The Queensland Department of Mines believes it is in the best interests of the gold mining industry to reduce and control the environmental impacts from gold mining since that is the community expectation.The Department of Mines has set as a special condition of many recently granted Mining Leases the requirement to submit a "Description of Operations" for the approval of the Minister, prior to commencing initial mining operations. In order to facilitate compliance by lessees with this condition an explanation is given of the reasons for this condition and how it is intended to achieve the objective of environmental protection.Environmental impact is operations dependent. Impact on a lease will vary quite significantly with the scale and methods employed. Before a lease can be granted and mined it is therefore necessary to have this information. The parameters of operations most critical both in terms of environment impact and economic viability are worked out and agreed with the lessee before the lease is granted. An approved description of operations which is required now, prior to the start of mining, provides the details of that agreement for the security and benefit of the lessee and the inspectors. It also provides the details of operations and environmental controls which were not required prior to the grant of the lease but are nevertheless required and necessary for compliance with the environmental standards.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. A high horizontal stress field has significant effect on the stability of underground roadways and influences the design of a support system in this environment. The high horizontal stresses at E1lalong Colliery, NSW, Australia provided the environment for this study. Samples of coal measures 'rock were collected and tested to determine their mechanical properties. The lithology, stress state, geometry and conditions prevailing in particular areas of the mine were obtained from geotechnical reports available at the mine and by field observation. The results of a series of finite element models constructed and tested under various conditions provided a basis for comparison with field observations. Analysis of the results indicated sufficient correspondence to provide a basis for the proposed design of an optimum support system. It is not suggested that finite analysis provides 'exact answers', but it does show the relative importance and interaction of various parameters.

Declining from surface provides access, haulageway, ventilation and provision for ser- vices for stoping and development. Three boom jumbos and 3.8 m3 capacity diesel loaders are used in decline development, the majority of which is driven at a gradient of 1 in 9. Primary ventilation is drawn from the mine through raisebored airways and high pressure contra rotating fans provide secondary ventil- ation. To meet schedules a special decline crew was formed on similar lines to a mining con- tractor. The basis of payment for the mining party was changed and the net effect was to accelerate development. Ground conditions demand constant support and this is achieved with chemical anchor rock bolts, multistrand grouted bolts and shotcrete. Major local shear zones are encountered and when they are to be driven through, a combina- tion of the above methods, involving a spiling technique, is used.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. The Coke Ovens Laboratory at Australian Iron & Steel, Port Kembla has been involved in the analysis of seam gases and mine airs for approximately twenty (20) years. This period has seen many developments and changes in the techniques used to the point when the current techniques are equal to other labora- tories involved in similar analyses. The laboratory has NATA registration for the analysis of mine airs and gases. Apart from routine testing of seam gases, ventilation airs and gases emmitted from coal bore cores a number of projects have been undertaken. These have served a twofold purpose, one to provide information to the customer, generally Collieries Research and Technology and secondly in developing the skills and capabilities of the Coke Ovens Laboratory. This paper discusses the development and services available at the Coke Ovens Laboratory for the analysis of gases and airs from collieries.

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. The need for accurate pillar strength models has become.more urgent as greater overburdens are encountered and pillar sizes grow larger. Current pillar design models differ widely in their predictions of the trend in pillar strength with increasing pillar width- to-height ratio. The goal of this paper is to evaluate current pillar strength theories, using a comprehensive data base of stress measurements from coal pillars. The stress measurements indicate that coal pillars maintain relatively high stresses near the ribline, and that the stress gradient within the yield zone can be approximated as a straight line. Several problems are identified for further research, including calibration procedures for different types of stress cells, strain softening behavior in the yield zone, and measurement of stresses in the cores of very wide pillars.

In Australia, coal mines have generally not adopted filling to increase mining recovery. The aim of this project, entitled æImproved recovery in highwall mining using backfillÆ, was to examine the feasibility of using fill to improve recovery in highwall mining. Current fill practice was reviewed for metalliferous as well as coal mining, both here in Australia and overseas, for its applicability to highwall mining. Studies were then made at a conceptual level to determine whether fill could be economically used, to determine appropriate sources for fill and to trial key aspects of fill behaviour. A review of filling methods led to conceptual studies being undertaken on seven filling methods and these studies demonstrated that fill could be used to improve recovery. These studies were then further refined. Selected filling materials have been reviewed and laboratory tests have been made on these to assess their suitability.

It is argued, that plate convergence, i.e. subduction, at other than right angles under a continental margin may lead to compensa-tional transcurrent faulting in the sialic environment. In this pro-cess the introduction of ultrabasic slivers, derived from the down-going oceanic crusial plate, along this fault may occur. This regi-me, both compressive overall and tensional along the transcurrent fault, will contain numerous indications for ongoing igneous and tectonic processes (such as volcanism, hot springs and frequent earthquakes).Examples for this scenario are California, the hinge between the Alpine- and Appennine orogens and the island of Sumatra.Igneous manifestations of subduction will be present both as inter-mediate intrusions and/or andesitic piles. The intermediate volca-nics may be intensely altered (chloritic, propylitic, argillic). Silice-ous breccias and banded chalcedonic sinters may be commonly found. This entire scenario is indicative for epithermal gold mine-ralisation.

Record quantities of slag were produced in 1974. Slag usage in this year amounted to 8.5 mega tonnes for granulated blast furnace slag and 7.7 mega tonnes for crushed blast furnace and L.D. slags. Granulated blast furnace slag is mainly used as a hydraulic bonding material in the manufacture of cement and in road construction. These applications give a fuel saving and reduce processing costs. Crushed blast furnace and L.D. slags find application as a substitute for natural aggregates in road construction and in the production of concrete. There is no doubt of ttie interest to utilise to the maximum all the slag produced by the steelmaking industry, thus preventing the build up of slag heaps detrimental to the environment and favouring the disposal of the heaps formed in the past. World wide efforts are being made to achieve this objective.

Following GyÆs earlier proposals for the use of StudentÆs t-test, a simplified, effective method and philosophy are proposed to test for maximum tolerable bias in data sets as well as in sampling devices. The philosophy of testing is particularly emphasised to derive important practical implications in terms of decision-making and risk control. Conclusions are offered which should equally matter to manufacturers and users of sampling equipment.

A method using dynamic programming for solving the optimum pit limit problem was presented in an earlier paper. A recent issue of this journal contained some contributed discussion on the implementation of this technique. In this paper we provide some additional ideas and possible options one can incorporate into the method. In particular, an efficient procedure for obtaining further optimum pit outlines on extensions of the original block model is described.

While I contemplate the formidable catalogue of bodies and organisations participating in this Conference and the impressive array of qualifications chalked up after the names of the representatives I am indeed honoured to be invited to address you. When I consider the theme you have chosen for your conference I am also somewhat daunted: "The Twenty First Century - Mining for Mankind". It is indeed dramatic, challenging. But what, I ask myself, can a mere KCMG say to all you professional fellows and doctors and academicians? It is not for me to stray on to the more esoteric areas that you will be covering, thereby running the risk of teaching my grandmother how to suck manganese nodules. On the other hand it seems to me that you deserve more than the courtesies, not to say banalities, that are sometimes - sadly, and unjustly - regarded as the stock in trade of diplomats.
