Although blasthole deviation is a problem which can seriously affect blasting operations, there is little practical emphasis on controlling this deviation and no practical emphasis on understanding its practical behaviour. The most common way of dealing with it involves tight control over drill set up and surveying hole paths. The surveying might involve simple collar location and inclination measurement to estimate the hole's actual path. At best, some operations routinely survey hole paths after all holes in a stope have been drilled. In addition, although there is an expectation that holes will deviate, there is no planning for this behaviour in order to reduce its impact on the blast. Design decisions are invariably made with the assumption that holes are straight. If and when surveys reveal problems it is possible only to adjust charging and initiation to 'work around them'. In extreme cases the drill might be recalled to fill in gaps. The lack of planning and the lack of understanding are doubtlessly linked.A model is presented that will predict the expected path of a drill hole. By knowing how a selected few holes deviated it is possible to make a good estimate of the deviation of other holes in the same rock mass. After minimal calibration the model can be used to increase the amount of information for a given amount of surveying or the amount of surveying can be reduced while maintaining the same level of knowledge of blasthole deviation. Equally important is the ability to plan for the deviation in future drilling through altering the initial collar angles or drilling from different locations. It is the authors' hope that planning for hole deviation becomes as much a part of the design process as planning for detonator delay scatter and explosive performance variation.

In designing Gordonstone mine all aspects of coal mining were treated as part of an integrated process.This paper will explain the route Gordonstone has taken and will continue to take into the future in using an integrated approach to mining.

The Warner Process has been devised to produce zinc metal directly from sulphide, thereby reducing the requirements for purchase of large amounts of energy in a special form. The process conditions for a practical process have been evaluated in an extensive program of research and development at the University of Birmingham. Recorded data now exists to take the process forward to commercial use within the next five years. The industrial economics have been evaluated. The cost of making zinc metal from zinc sulphide ore can be substantially lowered due to the reduced energy cost, locating zinc production in the neighbourhood of the mines and increasing ore to metal recoveries - particularly for fine-grained and pyritic ore. Integration of a Warner Furnace with a zinc mine and concentrator can result in a highly attractive return on capital Invested.

A compound cylinder-cyclone system, fitted with a flow control valve between the cylinder and cyclone, has been used for coal slurry sizing experiments in the range approximately 100 to 300 micrometres. An important feature of the system is the ability to adjust the cut size of the separation over wide limits by adjustment of the flow control valve. Results have been compared with typical fine screening operations. Under roughly equivalent conditions the compound cyclone system can achieve better elimination of extreme fines, but is not as sharp as the screen for coarser size cut-off. Simulations of systems involving combinations of the cylinder-cyclone system with screens indicate that the advantages of both sizing devices can be combined to yield accurately sized products for fine coal cleaning, at much less cost than using screens alone.

The mining industry has had lengthy experience with risk management involving technological situations imposing risks to people and property. In such situations the relevant parameters can be fairly well defined, the outcomes can be broadly predicted and probabilities of these can be estimated. Accordingly quantitative risk assessment can be applied. In recent years there has been increased emphasis in risk management on a broader set of potential consequences. These include potential impacts on the flora and fauna of ecosystems. These are typically poorly understood and this is especially true in Australia where the vast size of the continent and sparse population make gathering a comprehensive data base on biological resources a difficult task. The resulting scientific uncertainty and ignorance regarding the potential for serious or irreversible harm to the environment mean not only that quantitative risk analysis techniques are not appropriate, but also that the precautionary principle (PP) needs to be applied as a complement to qualitative ecological risk analysis. The potential for significant impacts is particularly high in Australian ecosystems. These comprise one of the 12 æmegadiverseÆ regions of the world in terms of biodiversity and, hence, have global significance. Moving from risk management to application of the PP by the mining industry provides a significant challenge. Application of the PP has no clear guidelines to follow and, to-date, has been highly unpredictable. However, there is much to be gained for industry in embracing this challenge and taking a pro-active approach in exploring methods that will provide for clearer guidelines and hence more certainty in outcomes of environmental management decisions involving precaution. As well, there could be considerable other advantages for the mining industry in terms of reputation assurance, community acceptance and greater certainty in terms of access to resources.

Comminution is the most power-intensive process in the technology for ferrous quartzite concentration. That is why improving comminution efficiency leads to the most appreciable economic effect on the concentration process. The trend towards reducing the lump size of crushed ore before charging the mill is considered to be of major importance in improving comminution efficiency. A considerable number of investigations have been performed in this direction. At the same time, a strong interest is also maintained in the increase of comminution efficiency due to optimisation of process taking place in the mill. Recently, investigations of the power intensity of the breaking process inside the mill have been carried out at the Krivoy Rog Mining Institute. It was ascertained that the routine conditions of comminution at a low mill ball charge ratio resulted in an unnecessarily high power consumption due to the force of impact of falling and milling bodies far exceeding the power required for comminution. For example, the power value for falling balls of 60 - 125 mm in diameter reaches 0.3 kNm, and the force and stress due to ball contact with the lining reaches 60 kN and 250 MPa respectively. These values exceed the force required for comminution by a factor of ten. Analysis of the mechanism of ore particle size reduction during comminution in the ball mill indicates that the size reduction is due to impact load, attrition load, and static load. The efficiency of size reduction is very low. During comminution in the ball mill, impact loads prevail and amount to 85 - 90 per cent of the total load. In this situation, not more than 10 - 15 per cent of destruction is due to attrition.

Increases in mechanisation and mining at greater depths are leading to additional problems of heat and humidity in many mines. As a result there is now an escalating demand for temperature prediction simulations appli- cable to underground environments. After a brief review of the present situation with regard to world mining and the use of environmental programs, the paper goes on to discuss in moderate detail the mathe- matical modelling of the many parameters that govern the condition of the ventilating air in a mine. The development of a program that gives the temperature distribution for a mine ventilation system is then outlined. The practicality of the program is discussed and the presentation format for users is explained. Simplification of input data requirements and the acquisition of data from other planning programs are an integral part of the commercial application of this program.

Scrutiny of the whole explosives industry has increased as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 and the bombings in Indonesia, including the Bali bombings last year. This has been highlighted in specific press releases from governing bodies, like the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources û Western Australia, on the necessity of being in compliance with regulations for storage of explosives. As a result, audits by inspectors to assess compliance are to be expected. In a proactive move, DynoConsult has assisted several customers through benchmarking current practices, in order to identify any areas of non-compliance to the statutory requirements for explosive storage and security. This paper discusses the outcomes of supplier discussions and customer audits and highlights the implications for the industry.

The use of a field spectrometer to systematically analyse drill samples from over 200 holes around the Permian-Carboniferous Ravenswood gold deposits in north-east Queensland has successfully identified both small and deposit-scale changes in the alteration mineral chemistry. Changes in chlorite composition within the tonalite host rocks are evident at the district scale, with Fe-rich chlorites seemingly more common in the vicinity of the deposits. Significant variations in white mica chemistry also occur, but mostly on the vein selvage scale, with no clear distinction between near-mine and distal compositions. The results indicate that chlorite compositional maps produced from regional field or airborne spectrometer data could potentially be used as a vector to ore in exploring for similar deposits in the area. The paper reviews recent valuations of mineral properties, many of which are at an early stage of exploration. The various methods used are outlined. The problem of comparing, in terms of whether it is fair and reasonable, a highly subjective opinion of the present value of a portfolio of exploration tenements with a vendor consideration, the real value of which, in most cases, lies at some indeterminate time in the future because of the application by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) of escrow conditions, is highlighted. Examples are given of some of the questionable logic used by consultants in handling this difficult issue. A proposal for revision to current flotation and listing practice which, the author believes, would circumvent the problem and at the same time provide better protection for the investing public is offered for Consideration.

As mining undoubtedly influences the natural environment future challenges of copper ore mining are minimisation of land use in area and duration, proper land rehabilitation as well as tailings management. One possible solution to avoid these negative impacts could be the application of underground mining with backfilling tailings compounds. This approach would definitely increase the production cost. Against this background the project analyses the influence of an æecologically satisfyingÆ copper ore mining on world market prize and demand as well as on the environment. In the project 261 copper ore mines accounting for 98 per cent of world copper production have been examined. After modelling a backfill plant, analyses of applied backfill techniques were conducted. Afterwards a method of cost estimation was developed and then the backfill plant model was applied in three case studies. The results were transferred into scenarios. The work closes with a short discussion and gives an outlook to forthcoming research. The results presented in this work have been generated within the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 525 entitled æResource-orientated view of metallic raw material flowsÆ. This interdisciplinary project was established at Aachen University of Technology (Germany) in 1997 and is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The long-term goal of this research program is the identification of options for the resource-sensitive supply and processing of metallic raw materials. In order to address the sustainable development challenges facing the metals and minerals industry an integrated resource management system is to be developed and tested for important metallic raw materials. Case studies for aluminium and copper are being conducted by the CRC 525 in order to provide useful and efficient tools for decision makers over the entire life cycle of these materials.

Preliminary project evaluation is relevant to the evaluation process of the decision makers (or executives) prior to making the critical business choices. Important to the assessment is an integrated sensitivity, scenario and risk analysis at every stage of a mining project. This should include the evaluation of different options taking into account uncertainties. Construction of interactive financial computer models where each element is functionally integrated into a fully integrated life-cycle allows rapid and automatic study of the sensitivity of each element through changes in the value of an input. The scenario analysis is the effect of changing more than one input at a time, organised through scenarios in a decision tree. Risk analysis is an integrated analysis of the effect of all uncertainties of the parameters, using Monte Carlo simulation. Key to the asset decisions process is that the decision maker is provided with the essential integrated decision information. We have clustered this information into several scenario groups. Within each group, two levels of uncertain information are distinguished: discrete scenarios critical for the decisions; and remaining uncertainty within the scenario (risk analysis) which can be modelled by continuous probability density functions (pdfÆs). For an asset, the relevant scenarios in each group and the associated continuous pdfÆs need to be defined. When the scenario groups and associated pdfÆs have been defined for the asset, the decision process can be started by structuring the different scenario groups in a Scenario Tree. A Scenario Tree contains decision and end nodes. Each end node corresponds to a completely defined mine project or asset model. The calculations for each end node result in a set of stochastic realisations for the reserves, production forecast, cash flow, and profitability indicators (NPV, IRR, DPR). Thus, a deterministic and fully probabilistic multi-commodity analysis tool is provided to investigate the sensitivity and robustness of decisions.

Widely diverse mechanisms exist for the action of a range of selective sulphide flotation depressants. Collector desorp- tion, leaching, competitive adsorption, formation of hydrophilic reaction-product coatings, action as reducing agents, and action as lattice-oxidizing agents are discussed. Detailed attention is focused on the latter two mechanisms. Recent works on copper depressants particularly for copper-molybdenum separations, and oxidizing agents enabling arsenopyrite- pyrite separations, are presented and discussed.

Several methods are available for inspections of mine shafts. These involve use of inclinometers, moving beams, inertial platforms and decelerometers. Inspections which use decelerometers are of most interest since they allow assessment of conditions of shaft steelwork, conveyances and the shaft itself. This assessment is based on recording and analysing dynamic behaviour of shaft conveyances. Sample inspections of several WA shafts confirm feasibility of using this method for periodic shaft Inspections.

Mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic data have been obtained for samples from 11 volcanoes and 4 kortlandite intrusives on Kamchatka.Similarities and differences in ore-bearing and barren intrusives are discussed. Differences in sulphide mineralization and sulphur isotope compositions of intrusives are explained in terms of the "auto-sulphurization" hypothesis which involves the redox conditions of the host rocks. possible role for carbon in nickle sulphide ore formation is also considered.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. Flow maldistribution in the iron blast furnace has been studied analytically by the use of the vectorial form of the Ergun equation and experimentally via packed columns and a cold model of a blast furnace. Experimental results are presented showing the effect on fluid flow patterns of the following types of nonuniformities in a packed bed: the increased voidage at the wall ("wall effect"), the decreased voidage at the interface between layers of materials with different sizes and shapes, and the differences in resistance to flow of bulk regions of a column with different sizes and shapes. The proposed theory is applied to the calculation of fluid flow patterns for these nonuniformities. Velocity profiles, as calculated from these flow patterns, were found to agree reasonably well with experimental measurements obtained via hot wire anemometry techniques for laboratory scale packed columns. Calculated fluid flow patterns are presented for blast furnace burdens which show how flow patterns are affected by (a) coke segregation and (b) the relative differences in resistance to flow between coke and oxide pellet layers. For the cold model study, calculated flow patterns are presented based on photographs of a given burden distribution. The velocity profiles calculated from these flow patterns were found to agree reasonably well with the velocity profiles measured from the cold Model.

The Ranger uranium mine has operated in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory since 1979. The mine's water management system was designed to cater for the wet-dry monsoonal climate and to satisfy the recommendations of the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry - Second Report, 1977 (The Fox Report) with respect to environment protection. The Fox Report advised that the aquatic ecosystem of the region must be protected and that the mine should collect all runoff from disturbed areas. Furthermore, the mine was to operate as a no-release system until release standards, based on the experience of several years of operation and on the results obtained from monitoring and scientific investigations, could be established. Monitoring and research data have now been collected for a decade. it is evident that lower-than-expected concentrations of chemical constituents are present in the runoff waters which are retained on site. Standards have been established for the release of these waters to the streams when in flood during the wet season. Mine water quality data and release standards are presented. It can be confidently concluded that controlled release will not cause detriment to the aquatic ecosystems of the Kakadu region. The Ranger operation has demonstrated that environmentally responsible management of mine waters is feasible for future mining ventures in the Kakadu region.
