Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited mines and pro cesses iron ore from two orebodies at Tom Price and Paraburdoo, situated in the North West of Western Australia. Conventional open pit mining methods are used at both sites in that material is drilled and blasted in benches, loaded by shovels and hauled to the Primary Crushers or dumped on waste or low grade material stockpiles. The present drilling fleet, consisting of eight high capacity Bucyrus Erie Rotary drills has evolved from an initial fleet of a large number of small percussion rigs. There are significant physical differences between the ore types encountered at both mines which nec- essitate the drilling of smaller diameter blast holes at Paraburdoo than those at Tom Price. The drilling practice at each site is dis- cussed, with examples of performance achieve- ments under varying drilling conditions.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dykelstock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

Fundamentally, the development of a minerals processing project is a very risky enterprise. Most mining companies do not have sufficient financial resources to undertake significant projects and hence have to undertake external financing. Indeed, most resource companies understand the high risks associated in developing their projects and therefore, wish others to share in the risks. Most merchant banks, on the other hand, are searching to find suitable resource development projects in which they can share their risk and also share a large proportion of the ærewardÆ. To resolve this issue a Feasibility Study is completed by the project developer and assessed by the merchant bank often with the assistance of an æIndependent EngineerÆ (IE) who assesses the validity of the development proposal. Generally speaking, unless the Feasibility Study has been prepared improperly, the technical aspects of most mineral projects are reasonable. Some of the more recent so-called æhigh techÆ projects are exceptions but these still do not present major technical mistakes or misconceptions. p> In most cases, the major criticism the IE presents after discussing the validity of the ore reserves focuses on production plans, capital costs and operating costs. Of these three parameters the production plan is one in which owners tend to be far too optimistic and financiers, until recent years, have not taken a position. The most critical part of the development plan is the ability of the project, as designed, to attain the required design performance and, even more critically, the ability of the owner to reach and sustain this level of production. In short, how long should the æramp-upÆ be planned to take? Financiers have become more circumspect and are now taking a more conservative view of new project performance by factoring into their project financial analysis longer periods of ramp-up, higher capital costs and higher operating costs. However, these financiers can also be part of the æproblemÆ if they become overly conservative. This paper attempts, by way of case studies available from the public arena, to identify the pitfalls the project owners can meet and possible means of avoiding the disastrous financial conundrum whereby the second or third æownerÆ is the company that reaps the rewards initially extrapolated. The paper briefly discusses this problem by referring to projects known to the author and including previous studies that looked at this very problem. It is emphasised that many of the opinions stated within the paper are strictly those of the author and could be subject of much debate.

The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

Bulk mining and handling technologies have been affected in two ways by the soaring costs of oil products in recent years. Firstly, the substition of oil by coal, oil sands and oil shale demands the development of high-capacity mining and handling equipment, and secondly the rising fuel costs favour a trend away from cost-intensive heavy truck transport. To cope with the growing volumes of material in mining and handling, larger equip- ment units have to be designed. This tendency becomes apparent from the examples of the Hambach open pit mine in Germany, and the Port Kembla handling plant in Australia. A combination of the flexibility of heavy truck transport and the cost advantages of belt conveyors is achieved by the system of semi-mobile crushing installations described in this paper.

Detailed mapping in the Permian-Triassic clastic sediments of the Southern Alps delineates a number of strike-slip faults, both dextral and sinistral, associated with the major Alpine Fault to the west and displacing a tight array of fault blocks. Concurrent steeply plunging folds are deforming early major folds of probable Cretaceous age, and generating schist locally. To the east a major collapse zone has developed along the crest of a Cretaceous anticline, located over an ancient Permian submarine scarp, with a number of small normal faults. Further east, extensive Carboniferous to Triassic rocks of much the same appearance are exposed as horsts and grabens in a large possible extension zone through central and east Canterbury. This may have crept incrementally from Cretaceous from the offshore Bounty Trough to reach the eastern margins of the Southern Alps in the Pleistocene.

The middle-Devonian Dulladerry Volcanics is a complex of A-type, predominantly rhyolitic ignimbrites, lavas and breccias. They form a NNW trending belt some 90 km long and 10-20 km wide, east of Parkes, NSW. The volcanics are dominated by widespread ignimbrite units with minor basalts, sediments and rarer andesites. The volcanics were deposited in a sub-aerial, possibly continental rift setting and are similar in chemistry and age to the Eden - Comerong - Yalwal Volcanic Zone (EVZ) on the NSW south coast. The volcanics exhibit an unusual Atype chemistry (high Zr, Y, Nb, REE, Ga). This distinctive composition illustrates that the volcanics are not comagmatic with the adjacent Yeoval Granite Complex or Eugowra Granite, which show typical I-type fractionation trends. Epithermal gold veins occur in basalt and andesite in the Dulladerry Volcanics at Mt Aubrey (Hopf, 1992), near Baldry. Alteration also occurs in the Glen Isla and Red Hill areas, with epithermal sinter recognised at Glen Isla. Copper and minor gold mineralisation occurs at the contact of rhyolite and andesite at Reedy Creek, but is not of epithermal origin. The analogous EVZ also contains several epithermal gold fields and it is this style of mineralisation which provides the most prospective targets in the Dulladerry Volcanics. Although the Dulladerry Volcanics also contain high background levels of REE and metals such as Zn and Pb, the general lack of fractionation and water-undersaturated character of A-type magmas does not lend itself to the development of significant concentrations of these elements into a fluid phase and mineralisation. The prospectivity of A-type volcanics in general could not be regarded as high. Reclamation field trials commenced in 1985, two years before the granting of the Mining Licence. The level of pasture production on varying soil depths (0 cm, 5 cm, 15 cm and 25 cm) overlying both tailings and oxidised waste overburden was assessed. After seven years, the rate of increase of N, C, P and S, losses of S and P and pH changes were investigated on the plots where grass seed was sown into bare tailings. It was determined that on these plots it would take approximately 24 years to reach the original carbon and nitrogen levels at the mine site.

The Reward polymetallic massive sulphide deposit occurs 35 km south of Charters Towers, adjacent to the Highway gold deposit (Fig. 1). It is hosted within rhyolitic lavas and interlayered volcaniclastics of the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics. Reward is a "blind" deposit discovered in 1987 after a long history of exploration by various companies in the area. The main pyrite dominant massive sulphide body occurs under 100m combined thickness of Tertiary fluviatile sediments overlying deeply weathered gossanous volcanics. The exploration case-history provides a striking example of how geological and structural models can be built up almost exclusively from drill information. Four different styles and ages of mineralisation are present: 1) volcanogenic Cu+Pb+Zn+Ag+Au massive sulphides of probable syngenetic origin; 2) remobilised Cu+Au in massive pyrite of metamorphic/deformational origin; 3) supergene and 4) oxide Cu+Au mineralisation of weathering origin. The massive pyrite body, containing chalcopyrite lenses, transects the stratigraphy and is inferred to contain in excess of 5 million tonnes. Overlying the primary mineralisation a supergene chalcocite rich zone contains a measured/indicated resource of 634,231 tonnes of 6.77% Cu which includes 287,000 tonnes of 1.32 g/t Au and 18 g/t Ag. In addition a measured/inferred oxide resource of 309,000 tonnes of 5 g/t Au and 27 g/t Ag overlies the supergene zone.

The successful processing of arsenopyritic ores is difficult and will be facilitated by a better understanding of the mineralogy of gold within arsenopyrite and the type of arsenopyrite in which gold is taken up. Solid solution gold in arsenopyrite is now well documented, and is a significant cause of refractory behaviour in gold processing. Investigations of the crystal structure and stoichiometry of arsenopyrite by X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and convergent beam electron microscopy have been carried out in order to understand how the gold is incorporated into the structure. Variations in stoichiometry, particularly the As:S ratio, of arsenopyrite leads to variations in structural parameters. These variations result in slight changes in thermal behaviour. The distribution of invisible gold in an arsenopyrite grain is generally non-uniform and synthesised samples contain up to 2 wt per cent gold. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique called ALCHEMI is being used to identify the substitution site. The process of gold agglomeration together with evidence of an ordered breakdown of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite has been documented with the use of TEM. An arsenopyrite grain containing invisible gold was heated with an electron beam resulting in recrystallisation of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite with arsenic being expelled. The gold is mostly insoluble in the pyrrhotite lattice and therefore exsolves out and combines with other gold atoms to form droplets at the boundary of the pyrrhotite.

IN the present paper it is the writer's intention to largely confine the subject-matter to details relating to the metallurgical practice in connection W,ith the blast roasting of lead ores at the Port PiJ;ie works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. rather than to elaborate on mechanical plant details which are more or less standard equipment of the average Dwight and Lloyd or Huntington-Heberlein blast roasting installations (hereinafter referred to in the text as D. & L. and I.I. & H. respectively). The present blast roasting plant is a combination ot D. & L. straight line machines and IQ-ton H. & H. pots. The latter installation was an operating unit prior to the introduction of the D. & L. machines, the pre-roasting then being accomplished in Ropp roasting furnaces.On the introduction of the D. & L. machines the use of the Ropp roasting furnaces as a pre-roasting unit was discontinued, and this step of the process was then carried out on one section of the D. & L. installation.Consequently, then, the present plant consists of (1) A section of D. & L. machines, which operate solely as a pre-roastiIig unit. (2) A section of D. & L. machines which operate to their full capacity as 3, final roasting unit and treat the main portion of the pre-roasted material.

The effects of pH, temperature and the form of zinc used on the kinetics of cementation of cadmium from process liquors were investigated. Batch tests were conducted in stirred beakers, and the cementation reaction was found to be first order controlled. The rate controlling step was thought to be the diffusion of zinc ions from the zinc surface to the bulk solution. The pH was found to have a significant effect when using Prime Western zinc or zinc dust. High reaction rates were favoured at low pH levels and a minimum rate was observed at a pH level of approximately 5 to 5.5. The pH was found to have little effect when using high grade and cathode zinc. The reaction rates increased significantly with increasing temperature; a reaction temperature of 55¦C resulted in almost complete removal of zinc from solution. Effective cementation rates were only acheived with cathode zinc after pickling in acid. The nature and specification of zinc used determined the cementation rate of cadmium, resulting in the following order: 1. Zinc dust 2. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 3. High Grade zinc at pH 3 4. Pickled cathode zinc 5. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 6. High Grade zinc at pH 3 7. Cathode zinc "as received".

The treatment of slimes has of late years been the chief difficulty in connection with cyanide work, in which much time and money has been spent in endeavouring to find a practical solution of this problem.The processes at present in use are:-1. Filter pressing, as practised in Western Australia.2. Decantation, as practised in South Africa.Filter pressing after apitation affords a ready and efficient means of separating the gold bearing solution from the slimes and admits a perfect washing thus ensuring a high extraction but the very high working costs forbids its application except on high grade material, the chief items being the necessary large amount of labour, compressed air, and general upkeep, none of which can be materially reduced. The decantation method has the ad vantage of low working cost but on the other hand the low extraction obtained, due to imperfect washing, the length of time occupied in' the treatment, and the enormous bulk of solutions to be handled, are serious disadvantages.In either process it is absolutely necessary to obtain a perfectly clean solution before starting the gold precipitation by zinc, which is a source of much trouble. Also the high first cost of installing either plant is such that they can only be adopted on mines with very large working capital.

A sequence of ultramafic units, very well exposed in Munro township in the Abitibi areal, of the Cahadian Shield, exhibit features which indicate that they are sub-aqueous extrusions. They occur within a sequence of tholeiitic pillow lavas, thin graphitic sediments. and large differentiated sills. The units range from a few metres to more than 250 m in length and less than 1 m to over 30 m in thickness. Over 60 individual units, occurring as flat pancakes on top of one another, make up a total exposed thickness of 150 m. The units have formed from a magma composed of a very olivine-rich picritic liquid carrying up,to 40 per cent olivine phenocrysts in suspension. Different units display a variety,of cross-sectional profiles. As an example of the most extreme type of profile, a typical unit 2 m thick consists of a cap of highly jointed fine-grained quenched rock, 10-30 cm thick, which becomes coarser downwards, grading into a zone composed of radiating and criss- crossing skeletal olivine crystals forming the well-known spinifex texture. This becomes even coarser-grained downwards, with "books" of parallel platey olivine crystals developing sub-perpendicular to the plane of the units. Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide deposits are common in Serbia, and mostly occur in the Karpato-Balkan and, to a lesser extent, the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province. These deposits û Coka Marin (Majdanpek), Grabova Reka (Blagojev Kamen), Lece (Medvedja) and Veliki Cip (Boranja) û are dominated by Cu and/or Pb-Zn mineralisation that contains a variety of Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe (¦ Sb, As, Bi) sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as native elements. Gangue minerals are composed of quartz, carbonates and rare silicates and barite. Based on their gold content these deposits can be divided in three groups:1. Polymetallic deposits with a high gold content (>1 g/t).2. Polymetallic deposits with an intermediate gold content (0.1 to 1 g/t), and3. Polymetallic deposits with a low gold content (<0.1 g/t). Gold occurs as native gold or as an alloy with silver. Native gold ranges in size from 5 to 20 ¦m, with a few rare grains over 100 ¦m, as isolated grains or as microveins (in the first group of deposits). Its distribution within the deposit in uneven. Native gold in the second group is smaller in size (1 - 5 ¦m, rarely 20 ¦m), where it is uniformly distributed in a quartz-silicate matrix. The third group is of no economical importance. The subject of research has been the first group of polymetallic deposits.

Ordovician metasedimenIs near the Karamea Bend and east of Ihe upper Carboniferous Karamea batholith were intruded by acidic stocks during the Cretaeeous. K/ Ar dating of two of the stocks gave 110 ± 3 millionyears whereas the batholith granite gave 290 8 ± million years. All but one of the stocks mapped lie on an approximately ENE line along which they show gradation in composition, texture, and alteration.Most of the intrusions have produced homfelsic haloes in the surrounding rocks but the hydrothermal alteration centred near the head of Questa Creek is quite distinct. Here much wider zones of alteration are characterised by chlorite, green biotite, sericite, and quartz-orthoclase in order towards the centre, though no stock crops out. Each zone of stronger alteration is heralded by "spots" containing the next characteristic mineral.It is suggested that a late phase of the intrusive period that gave rise to the outcropping stocks also gave rise to a volatile-rich intrusion still hidden beneath the head of Questa Creek.

The development of the lower Hunter Valley, centred around Newcastle and its suburbs is closely linked to the mining of coal and the settlements which grew to house the colliery officials, the miners and their families. The Port of Newcastle expanded and developed as a port exporting coal to many ports of the world ranging from Hawaii and Brazil to Japan and Korea. The coal which passed through the Port of Newcastle, depend- ing on the historical period in question may have been mined in Newcastle itself, or one of the nearby colliery townships such as Lambton, Wallsend, Charlestown or Hamilton, or from one of the estuarine collieries located at Carrington or Stockton or from the West Wallsend area or from East Greta, Pelaw Main or Cess- nock located on the South Maitland (Greta) coal field or from the open cut and underground mines of the Singleton Coal District.
