The Copper Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited treats on average 18 000 tonnes/day of chalcopyrite ore containing typically three per cent copper. The main gangue minerals are iron sulphides (-13 per cent) and non sulphide gangue (-78 per cent). In August, 1991, the comminution flowsheet was changed from a conventional circuit (crusher/rod mill/two stage ball milling) to a modem circuit (fully autogenous grinding/one stage ball milling). The 80 per cent passing size of the flotation feed with the conventional circuit was 125 microns. The Copper Concentrator has two parallel grinding lines, two roughing and scavenging flotation lines, and common cleaning, recleaning and retreatment sections. During the first six weeks of the installation phase, one of the two flotation lines was fed by the conventional grinding circuit and the other by the autogenous grinding circuit. Data from parallel surveys and historical data are used to analyse the rougher/scavenger flotation performance before and after the change. The solid and mineral distributions of the flotation feed, the pulp chemistry and the reagent requirements are compared. The mineral liberation before and after the installation of autogenous grinding is compared on a sized basis using data from the 14 consecutive months before, and the seven months after the change. Liberation was measured using the QEM*SEM(*) instrument. The overall effect of the new grinding circuit on the plant metallurgy is also assessed using the copper recovery values, the dilution of the final concentrate and the distribution of copper losses in the final tailings. Comprehensive occupational health and safety legislation in Australia is comparatively recent. It follows the examples set in U.S.A. and U.K. a decade or more ago. In Western Australia the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act was proclaimed in April 1985. It still has a long way to go before it achieves all its objectives. The mining industry has developed a substantial body of health and safety regulations under the Mines Regulation Act. Considerable practical expertise in such matters already exists, much of it developed from hard won experience. As a result it would prefer not to become engulfed in the new legislation. It would prefer to build upon the cooperatively developed policies and workable practices in the field of occupational health and safety with which it is familiar. Associated Minerals Consolidated Ltd. is a leading mineral sands producer in Western Australia and has continuously developed its occupational health and safety policy and practices. Under the banner of "Resource Control", AMC seeks to provide a safe and healthy working environment at all times. This is being achieved through a strategy of a policy, a defined organisational structure and a detailed programme, which together comprise the "Resource Control System". Some of the activities and achievements of AMC in the field of occupational health and safety are compared with the objectives of contemporary legislation, and details of some of the specialised areas of the Resource Control Programme are discussed. The paper will also highlight and discuss impractical areas of potential legislation.

A large number of techniques are in use today to limit membrane fouling, among them certainly is air bubbling (which constitutes the transport medium in flotation) as applied in wastewater treatment; meanwhile, dispersed-air flotation is suitable as a pretreatment stage for microfiltration. The invented and investigated hybrid cell combines the advantages of both flotation and membrane separation, while overcoming their limitations, producing clean water from industrial wastewater. Metals recovery from dilute aqueous solutions is a promising application of this innovative hybrid process of flotation and microfiltration, further to solid/liquid separation. In this study, ceramic flat-sheet membrane modules were inserted inside a typical flotation cell in the laboratory tests, using multichannel geometry, combining flotation with microfiltration by submerged membranes; the latter requiring periodic backflushing. The specific objective was to apply this process for the efficient separation of effluents containing metal cations (here, zinc). The main examined parameters were: the initial metal concentration, flotation surfactant applied and air flowrate. The successful contribution of precipitate flotation was highlighted, while the observed metal removals were of the order of ~100 per cent.

The Mount Leyshon breccia complex is located on an east-west trending contact between Cambrian metasediments (Puddler Creek Formation) and the Ordovician Mt. Leyshon granite, within the Lolworth-Ravenswood block. Detailed mapping of basement, breccia and igneous unit geometries, crosscutting relationships and resolution of complex chronological relation- ships indicates that the Mt. Leyshon breccia complex should be reinterpreted as a number of intrusive igneous and breccia phases. This is in contrast to a previously published account of a largely extrusive geological setting. A complex structural history dominated by strike-slip faulting is preserved within the basement units and is responsible for controlling the location and geometry of the breccia complex. The breccia complex has been divided into brecciated "basement", "main pipe breccia" and an "interactive magma/breccia sequence". Main pipe breccia (the most voluminous unit within the complex) has been re-interpreted as an intrusive breccia, rather than an extrusive or vent fill as previously proposed. This is based on the following evidence: 1. the facies characteristics of the main pipe breccia, 2. the presence of a progression from cohesive basement through to mixed breccia, 3. minor basement block rotation during breccia complex formation, and 4. the partial structural control on the main pipe breccia. No unambiguous evidence exists for pyroclastic facies, although the fine breccia variant commonly contains "accretionary structures", very similar in appearance to those formed during pyroclastic processes. In view of 1. above, they are interpreted to be the product of particle accretion during upward movement of fragmental material, although an origin due to altera- tion cannot be completely discounted. heir occurrence in the main pipe breccia indicates that their presence within a rock unit is not necessarily diagnostic of nvroclastic nroeesses.

Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) Century mine (Century) is a large open-cut mine in northwest Queensland approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. In 2009, the mine experienced three failures which began as small failures, and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. The incidents were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and practical management to achieve positive outcomes for the mine. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes aimed to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area (CSA) located south of the wall. As mining progressed, shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. After considering several design options, the area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology was difficult to predict ahead of mining, and required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management have resulted to achieve positive outcomes in a challenging mining environment.

During the past eight years a vigorous drilling campaign resulted in large increases in the reserves of both copper and silver-lead-zinc ores.As a result the Company initiated an increased production programme.Some major capital works have been completed, others are in progress and more are needed to achieve the proposed daily throughput of 14,400 tons. The increased ore potential justified a copper refinery which has been constructed at Townsville. The increased production rate achieved to date, combined with improved techniques and greater mechanization, is assisting the Company to combat the general inflationary trends caused by increased costs for labour and materials.INTRODUCTION"Today we are armed with better weapons in our fight for lowered costs and greater efficiency, but we must not flag in our efforts to improve." Such was the resolution expressed by Mr. K. B. Gross, then General Manager of the Company, in his review lecture delivered to the First Ordinary Meeting of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy at Mount Isa on 18th August, 1952. This present review of the period 1952 to 1960 records our efforts to fulfil this resolution. At the th:ne of Mr. Gross's statement,copper production was commencing in earnest. Although the importance of Mount Isa's copper orebodies was well recognized, the major discoveries which led to Mount Isa's emergence as Australia's premier copper mining and smelting operation were not known. Although the effects of sea level changes on ore concentration processes are to some extent obvious with certain deposits, e.g. beach placer deposits, they have been largely overlooked with others such as Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits. It is contended that sea level variations may have more profound effects on a wide range of deposits than has previously been appreciated. These deposits include not only placer'and residual deposits but also stratiform copper deposits, Mississippi Valley type deposits, stratiform manganese deposits and Minette type iron deposits. Sea levels in paralic basins profoundly affect the influx of 'detrital sediment, and this has to be suppressed to allow for the accumulation of thick rich deposits of coal evaporites, phosphate or metalliferous sediment. Emergence can be associated with oxidized waters, erosion, and,solution of soluble rocks. Submergence can reverse the Eh trend and can lead to preservation of ores. Both realms of surficial sedimentary environments and subsurface diagenetic environments can be affected by changes in water pressure, gas pressure (pC02), Eh, pH, and temperature as sea levels fluctuate. Even relatively small sea level changes may have profound effects. For example, there is some evidence to suggest that when the level dropped below 100 metres about 10,000 years ago, the Red Sea became isolated by the sill at Bab el Mandeb in the south, and evaporated away to leave a series of shallow lakes. The Red Sea is 1 to 2 km deep. It was at times such as this that the well-known copper-zinc mineralization developed in the Red Sea trough. Changes in sea level also affect the stability field of gas hydrates which can yield large volumes of gas leading to mass movements on the sea floor (Warnke, 1986).

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23,000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scop- for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only.A parallel lode, known as the zinc lode, was well developed at that time. The reduction of titanium tetrachloride to trichloride can be achieved by employing hydrogen and electric arcs. It is possible to produce melts containing up to 50% TiCk in the eutectic mixture of LiCl/KCl by striking a D.C. arc at the surface in the presence of hydrogen and TiCl. vapour. If the electrode IS made to just penetrate the surface of the salt mixture, a hot zone results from the' high resistance contact with both lower chlorides and sintered titanium may be produced. The sintered metal forms just below the melt surface while the trichloride forms at the gaslIiquid junction.The "hotspot cathode" appears to offer a solution to the problem of producing coherent deposits as the spong'e metal can 'be continuously withdrawn in a similar manner to the "calcium process".INTRODUCTIONConsiderable interest has been shown for some years in the possible development of a cheap electrolytic process for the extraction of titanium metal, since a method using simple materials and cheap electric power would materially reduce the cost of production. Even when cheap starting materials are used, however, there exist several general difficulties in the operation of plant which both limit the speed of production and increase the cost of the product. It happens that most of the techniques so far tried produce a powder as cathodic deposit, and when this is the case the following difficulties arise:1. The whole contents of the bath must be treated with solvent in order to extract the 'metal powder which may itself tend to oxidise, and thus become contaminated.2. Fine metal powders, which often contain residual entrained salts, are less easy to consolidate by arcmelting than metal sponge.

In earlier studies along a mining region recipient (the river VormbScken, northern Sweden), the fraction of certain trace metals recovered in the particulate phase has been found to increase with increasing concentrations of particulate iron. This study was conducted to see if the pattern could be reproduced by adding minor amounts of ferrous iron, simulating groundwater inputs. When the iron is oxidised in the near neutral river water, it will form iron oxyhydroxides and precipitate. Trace metals may be either co-precipitated along with the iron, or adsorbed onto the freshly formed precipitates. If this is the case, such a mechanism may be incorporated as a part of a final polishing step in a mine drainage treatment system based on natural attenuation processes. The experiments were performed at 0¦C and 22¦C, on authentic river waters collected during the winter and summer of 2002, respectively. In order to investigate the influence of particles and bacteria initially present, filtered river waters (4 solution were added to the experimental beakers, increasing the iron content of the waters by 0 - 1.5 mg/L. The oxidation and precipitation processes were followed by means of filtration (0.2 ¦m) for up to seven days. In order to be able to compare the experimental results with the actual field situation, on both experimental occasions, surface water samples were collected also from three stations situated along the river. The samples collected were analysed for iron, calcium, and trace metals by AAS and ICP-MS. The iron oxyhydroxides formed in the experiment did not influence the partitioning of As, Cu, and Pb to the same extent as the particulate iron encountered along the river appeared to do. The recent description provided by Scott (1981) of the Ardlethan alteration systems is of particular interest as it draws attention to the analogy between Ardlethan and the porphyry tin systems of Bolivia (Sillitoe et aI, 1975).During 1978-1979 a parallel study of the mineralization confirmed that the extensive alteration pattern relates to a series of breccia pipes which provide access channelways for the mineralizing solutions (Clarke, 1979). Many of the results reported by Scott are difficult to interpret without this concept and this short discussion is intended to provide additional perspective to the proposed porphyry tin model.The breccia pipe systems are centred upon each of the major mineralized zones (Wild Cherry, Carpathia, Stackpool and White Crystal) and with the exception of the White Crystal collapse breccia the major pipes are of the hydrothermal intrusive type. They range considerably in size and shape and at least two ages of formation are revealed by their cross cutting relationships at the Stackpool, Carpathia and Ardwest regions. Individual pipes or groups of pipes have distinctive alteration/infill characteristics and the entire system can be viewed as a complex porphyry tin system evolving with time. The recognition of pipes of different types and ages reveals a situation considerably more complex than suspected by Scott, and hence both the geochemical data and modelling require reinterpretation.For instance, the geochemical data contained within Tables 2 and 3 (Scott, 1981) relate to two separate breccia pipes which correspond to the South Cherry and Ardwest ore zones respectively. Although it is probable that both pipes are temporarily identical it is important that the geochemical data be viewed in context. The brecciation is extremely difficult to recognize and it is probable that the chemical compositions given represent mixtures of altered fragments and rock flour, together with material precipitated from solution as matrix, along microfractures, within small vughs, etc.

The water pollution hazard posed by the derelict Conrad mine site, to the water and associated stream sediment of Borah and Maids Creeks and the nearby Copeton Dam storage, has been assessed. Mine water, tailings and tailings dump leachate have polluted water and stream sediments in Borah Creek downstream of the mine site. Acidity, arsenic, copper, lead, iron, silver and zinc are the principal pollutants. Under dry and low flow conditions, mine water was found to be the dominant polluting source, however, leachate and run-off from tailings dumps were also significant under and following wet conditions. Soluble arsenic, lead, iron and silver species in mine water and leachate were found to be rapidly incorporated into sediments, but acidity, copper, and zinc persisted in the creek water. Under low flow conditions, the water of Maids Creek is polluted with copper and zinc (up to 4.4 and 34 mg/l for copper and zinc respectively) and the pH is decreased (from pH 5 - 7 to pH 3 - 6) by entry of Borah Creek water. Values found in Maids Creek were variable and related to flow regime and distance downstream from Borah Creek confluence. Water in Copeton Dam storage, having a much larger volume of water with a higher bicarbonate buffering capacity (50mg/l versus 15mg/1), is not affected by entry of Maids Creek water. Polluted sediment from Borah Creek has contaminated Maids Creek for 2km downstream to Copeton Dam storage. Stream sediment downstream of the Borah Creek confluence, contains up to 1.0% As and 1.4% Pb in the less than 200 micron size fraction. Under high flow conditions, arsenic was found to be moved out from the mine site as insoluble species, associated with suspended sediment in Run-off.

The process of mine planning at AnacondaÆs nickel and cobalt laterite operation located at Murrin-Murrin in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia is carried out in a number of stages in an endeavour to determine the optimum mining sequence in order to maintain supply to the 4 Mtpa plant subject to operational constraints. The 296 Mt @ 0.99 per cent Ni and 0.064 per cent Co ore reserve (based on a cut-off grade of 0.8 per cent Nickel) is spread geographically widely over three regions comprising Murrin North (15 km + 15 km), Murrin South (7 km + 16 km) and Murrin East (5 km + 13 km) (refer Figure 2). The nickel mineralisation has been broken up further within each region into 18 separate manageable block models representing the 32 different deposits. The models are based initially on the 50 m + 50 m resource drilling for long term planning and updated with 12.5 m + 12.5 m grade control drilling prior to mining. Each of the individual block models are optimised using Whittle 4X software to provide the shells used as the basis for each of the 126 pit designs. The pits are generally nested with starter pits targeting the higher value shells with subsequent pits incrementally cutting back ultimately to the life of mine shells. A series of steps including: the coding of the individual pits into the block model; data export; TCL scripting (to calculate additional economic and tracking information); importing; and re-blocking; completes the transfer of the data into a MineMax (mixed integer linear programming schedule optimising software) model. Using MineMax and the application of operational and production constraints allows the optimisation, assessment and economic evaluation of alternative scenarios in order to determine the optimum life of mine plan and schedule.

The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. In todayÆs demanding business landscape continual change and technological advancement is a given. With these changes there is now, more than ever, a need to ensure sustainable growth in respect of value protection and value adding whilst meeting the pressures and expectations of the societies in which we operate. Traditionally the management of safety has been a very reactive activity in the business, in some cases seen as an irritation and a disruptive process that demands a focus on preventing reoccurrences. This in turn has focused the measurement of safety performance on a range of lagging indicators û æafter the effect managementÆ. Gaining and maintaining a licence to operate is crucial to a sustainable business but as a prerequisite, organisations need to have a demonstrable ability to manage the safety of their people, as well as mitigating the people risk associated with the business activity. A major focus in the last decade has been on the implementation of enterprise risk management programs, where risk becomes embedded in all business systems and processes and the organisationsÆ genetic make up is programmed to analyse and integrate risk management into all facets of the business activity. The management of safety should be no different. One school of thought argues that there are no new accidents, but rather our inability to learn from the past. Others believe that as long as we have an appetite to achieve the unachievable, we will have to continue to push the boundaries, our safety comfort zones and inevitably take risks. Single reliance on highly evolved technical systems, elaborate processes, highly skilled people, safe equipment and safe work environments have shown one thing û they are not sustainable in providing adequate coverage in the business. In analysing a range of factors associated with some of the worst catastrophes of the 20th century, it can be suggested that they were in fact predictable and inevitable and that an integrated approach underpinned by sound risk management systems could have determined a different result. The key to a sustainable approach in the management of safety requires us to look at a multitude of aspects that collectively allow the performance of an organisation to be predictable. To have certainty in the business activities it is necessary to have controls in place that will mitigate the risks normally associated with unwanted events. It is ensuring that human factors effectively contribute to monitoring the planned approach and being able to safely adjust to any variability. In essence this is having the ability to proactively plan for the longer term. The sentiments articulated by organisational leaders echo that safety management is good business. Surely then a good business is a sustainable business, and a sustainable business is one that provides lasting benefits to its stakeholders.

A history is given of the dust control techniques developed and applied by the mining companies at Broken Hill. A history of the regeneration works undertaken since 1936 is out- lined. Particular emphasis is placed on the stabilization of mine residue dumps which are located throughout a belt of mining leases in the middle of the city and which began in 1937. The establishment of vegetation for dust control techniques is discussed in detail and a case study is given of the successful revegetation of the sides of a 650 metre long, 350 metre wide and 35 metre high residue dump.

The Australian Broken Hill Consols Mine, situated some 600 yd east of the main Broken Hill line of lode, is noted for its rich ores of silver. In contrast to the vast conformable orebodies of the Broken Hill field, the Consols lode occupies a narrow fissure dipping to the south west at angles increasing from 240 through to vertical and transgressing the strike of the metamorphosed country rock at an oblique angle. This feature, together with the abundance of calcite and siderite and the virtual absence of silicate minerals in the gangue, has led to its classification as an orebody of the Thackeringa type (King, 1953). Recorded production during the period 1890 to 1903 is given as 845,000 oz of silver and 20 tons of lead.The unusually rich silver values of the Consols lode were concentrated at the intersection of the fissure with beds of amphibolite, whereas in the adjacent schists and gneisses the lode became markedly impoverished. From the surface to a depth of some 120 ft extensive surface oxidation had occurred, resulting in the breakdown of siderite and its replacement by limonite and associated manganese oxides.Silver halides, dyscrasite, acanthite and partly oxidised tetrahedrite were the main silver minerals in this zone. With increasing depth the lode material gradually reverted to minerals representative of the hypogene zone.The only previous work specifically on the mineralogy of the Consols lode is that by Smith (1922), one time manager of the mine. Metals Refining Operations Pty. Ltd. (NMO), PNG's only gold and silver refinery is operated by Golden West Refining Corporation Ltd (GWR), a member of the Rothschilds group and has a strong PNG ownership link through statutory shareholders. Located in Waigani, MRO has been successful in substantially increasing production through toll refining for Porgera, Misima, Tolukuma, Wapolu and, more recently, at Lihir as well as treatment of alluvial gold from smaller operations. This increased throughput has resulted in the need to constantly upgrade equipment, techniques and practices, particularly to continue quality improvements and meet market demands. The evolution of these changes are documented and discussed and the probable future development plans are detailed.

Any engineering firm hoping to do business in the modern world must understand-and take into account-the social and economic realities of client, country, culture, and community. If these considerations are ignored, any large-scale international development project is doomed to failure even before it begins. In this changing world, the distinctions between `developed', `developing', and `less developed' nations are more and more blurred. The so-called `less-developed' and `developing' nations are rapidly acquiring technology, an educated man- agerial and technical class, manufacturing capa- bilities, a growing spectrum of developed financial and raw materials resources, and a broad range of labour skills. These nations are establishing themselves as an integral part of the modern world, on an equal footing with other nations and with justifiable expectations for an ever higher standard of living and an ever better quality of Life.
