The Latrobe Valley is located approximately 150 kms east of Melbourne. Within a very small area there are 3 large brown coalmines and associated power stations, 3 large towns, and numerous smaller towns in the vicinity. The mines have been generating power for Melbourne and surrounds for the last 100 years, with two of the mines being owned and operated by the Victorian Government (State Electricity Commission of Victoria) prior to privatisation in the 1990s. All three mines were privatised with the expectation that the mine voids would be filled with water to become pit lakes, as the final landform/rehabilitation solution (Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry, Teague and Catford, 2016). It could be argued that until relatively recently, this was largely expected, by government and industry, to be the rehabilitation solution for managing the two key risks associated with the sites:  The geotechnical stability of the mine pits.  The prevention of fire – through covering coal batters with water. Transitioning away from mining economies requires collaborative, regional, innovative thinking with a multitude of stakeholders, from a wide range of government departments, industry, First Nations people and broader community. Closure planning and rehabilitation activities require a range of skills and experience, such as, closure planning, various scientific and engineering disciplines (pit water quality modelling, geochemical modelling, cover design, landform design, contaminated site etc), civil engineering, demolition etc. Some of these skills are similar, such as financial modelling, stakeholder engagement, contract and project management. But the majority are different to those required during the operational phase of a mine. These closure skills can also be lacking within government, with Departments more familiar with monitoring and compliance activities associated with operational facilities. Some key aspects that appear to be critical to planned successful closure are:  Collaborative regional and localised planning, with industry, government, community, First Nations and other industry, business leaders and entrepreneurs all involved in providing a smooth transition away from mining.  Well-defined and known regulatory pathways to achieve mine licence relinquishment assists in encouraging investment.  Appropriately skilled and experienced government and industry personnel.  Mining companies, who are committed to closure planning and provisioning from the earliest point in project planning.  Mine employees who are appropriately skilled and experienced in mine closure planning and implementation with access to all the relevant technical expertise required for the project. Areas like the Ruhr Valley in Germany provide good some examples of smooth processes that facilitate mine economies transition into new economies (World Resources Institute (WRI), 2021).

Mt Whaleback is one of the largest open-cut iron ore mines in the world. Haulage cost is the single largest component of operating costs at the mine. Past studies towards alternatives to truck haulage have recognised the potential viability of an in-pit crushing and conveying system, dependent on the proportion of uphill haulage. After seventeen years of mining Mt Whaleback still contains more than 1,000 million tonnes of ore, needing 1,800 million tonnes of waste removal to extract it. What was once a quarry has now turned into a large open pit. The increasing proportion of uphill haulage, the need to replace ageing 120 ton and 200 ton trucks and the necessity of achieving and maintaining a higher stripping ratio prompted, in 1984, the initiation of a new feasibility study into the viability of alternative material handling systems. A semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying system was found to be most suited to Mt Whaleback conditions. The East Pit was selected as the best location based on the analysis of haulage profiles measured on long term incremental mine plans. A capacity of 22 million tonnes per year was considered achievable by the proven technology currently available. A detailed estimation of capital and operating costs of two systems - one with trucks only and another with trucks, crusher and conveyor - for the removal of 22 million tonnes per year of waste rock, showed substantial cost savings achievable by the proposed system. An economic evaluation of the two systems established the advantages of constructing the in-pit crushing and conveying system. This is now under construction and will be commissioned in early 1987. Experience gained in constructing and operating this installation is expected to influence decisions on similar installations in future.

Magmatism is of first order significance in the extension process. Continental extension is terminated when sea-floor spreading commences, but sea-floor spreading will not commence if magmas do not begin to arrive in sufficient volumes. In the oceanic lithosphere, the rate of magma supply may determine whether sea-floor spreading takes place, or lithospheric extension as the result of normal fault arrays. In continental crust thickened as the result of previous compressional orogeny, the availability of magma may determine a completely different process. The author has examined metamorphic core complexes in a number of tectonic environments, in the North American Cordillera, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, and in the Solomon Sea, Papua and New Guinea. What these terrains have in common is a major collisional orogeny predating a major extensional event. The "roll back" of the lithospheric flexure associated with subduction can be seen as the "driving force" for extension in two of these cases. Metamorphic core complexes in these environments are characterized by domal exposures of crustal scale ductile shear zones, underneath which massive plutonic complexes have been formed. Emplacement of these plutons is associated with anatexis of the surrounding rocks. Migmatite complexes are well developed in the Aegean and Solomon Sea core complexes, and in some core complexes in the Basin and Range. Chains of core complexes can be explained as the result of basaltic and andesitic magmas derived from a linear belt of relatively hot rising asthenosphere, in a zone of attempted continental "break up". It is argued that core complexes are the results of magmas derived from relatively short lived mantle "hot spots" impingeing on extending continental crust which has been overthickened during previous compressional orogeny.

The most important aspect of modelling a geological variable, such as metal grade, is the spatial correlation. Spatial correlation describes the relationship between realisations of a geological variable sampled at different locations. Any method for spatially modelling such a variable should be capable of accurately estimating the true spatial correlation. Conventional kriged models are the most commonly used in mining for estimating grade or other variables at unsampled locations, and these models use the variogram or covariance function to model the spatial correlations in the process of estimation. However, this usage assumes the relationships of the observations of the variable of interest at nearby locations are only influenced by the vector distance between the locations. This means that these models assume linear spatial correlation of grade. In reality, the relationship with an observation of grade at a nearby location may be influenced by both distance between the locations and the value of the observations (ie non-linear spatial correlation, such as may exist for variables of interest in geometallurgy). Hence this may lead to inaccurate estimation of the ore reserve if a kriged model is used for estimating grade of unsampled locations when non-linear spatial correlation is present. Copula-based methods, which are widely used in financial and actuarial modelling to quantify the non-linear dependence structures, may offer a solution. This method was introduced by Bßrdossy and Li (2008) to geostatistical modelling to quantify the non-linear spatial dependence structure in a groundwater quality measurement network. Their copula-based spatial modelling is applied in this research paper to estimate the grade of 3D blocks. Furthermore, real-world mining data is used to validate this model. The German mining industry uses different residues for backfilling and stowing. A hydraulic pipe conveying technology for these materials has shown advantages for the transportation into the mine. Pipeline conveying systems are able to bridge long distances, they save room within the underground workings and they save staff and costs. Absolutely necessary for successful use of the hydraulic conveying technology is the knowledge about the unusual non-Newtonian flow properties of solid/liquid mixtures like pastes and slurries. The flow resistance of these materials cannot be described easily by one viscosity. Owing to a yield point and a pseudo-plastic behaviour the viscosity changes with the shear rate and with the streaming velocity inside the pipe. Also these flow behaviours depend very sensitively on the liquid/solid-ratio, often so dramatically that gravimetric or volumetric dosing equipment is not in a position to control the production of backfill pastes. Quality changes of the solid raw materials (particle size distribution, density, mineralogical composition) lead to additional difficulties. The first experiences with hydraulic backfilling plants were troubled by plugged pipes, a bad backfill quality caused by unnecessarily high water content and high costs for chemical binders to solidify the backfill. The installation of viscosity controlled paste production leads to success with the hydraulic backfill technology. A development of the DMT, a bypass pipe-viscometer, has been the key technology. The system is able to analyse on-line, difficult, sticky and abrasive substances and determine their non-Newtonian flow properties. Because the system measures real physical values it is in a position to pre-calculate process relevant parameters like the pressure drop of the backfilling paste in the conveying pipeline. Newer types of the viscometer system also measure the slurry density and calculate its composition. These systems have proven a success controlling backfill paste production plants. They offer a secure prevention of pipeline plugging and a production of high quality backfill pastes with a water content as low as possible.

The Closure Risk model was developed as a new tool to aid decision makers in the complex area of mine closure. It uses a simple analytical technique that allows the decision maker to simplify what is often a complex mine closure process into more easily managed sub components. This systematic approach ensures that critical factors in the closure process are not overlooked. It also allows the most important issues to be highlighted. The model can also be used to produce quantitative estimates of risk by weighting and prioritising the issues to produce the Closure Risk Factor (CRF). Field trials at several mine sites in the Northern Territory of Australia in 2001 tested the model. The trials confirmed that the model has significant potential as a tool for decision-makers to assess in a structured, systematic manner, the major closure risks at individual mine sites. The risks include not only environmental impacts but safety and health, community, legal, financial, technical and other issues. The trials confirmed the value of a team-based approach and the inputs of key staff including environmental, production, mine planning, and community liaison personnel as well as mine management. Although the usefulness of the qualitative component of the model was established, it was found that, due to the influence of subjectivity, the utility of the prototype model to determine quantitative risk was of limited value. Using a continuous improvement approach, improvements to the model were sought. A refined model, incorporating the Australian Standard 4360 definition of risk and facilitated in-house risk assessment sessions was developed and tested against the data obtained in the field trial. This model, while maintaining the qualitative strengths of the original, allows more accurate absolute and relative quantitative scores to be calculated. This in turn facilitates comparisons between the issues at a single site as well as between different mines.

Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.

Acid mine drainage is a serious environmental problem caused by the oxidation of sulfide minerals responsible for highly acidic, sulfate and metals-rich drainage. Several methods of mine waste management have been developed that reduce liabilities on environment. Layered co-mingling of waste rock with compacted tailings, covers with capillary barriers effect, and co-disposal of waste rock and tailings are these new methods which are used to reduce the formation of acid mine drainage. These methods shield waste rock dumps from oxygen. These techniques could prevent oxidation reaction. In this study, alkaline industrial wastes are used with acid generating tailings to inhibit acid mine drainage. The alkaline wastes selected are cement kiln dust (CKD) and red mud bauxite (RMB). These alkaline materials are used to keep neutral conditions in the fine material layer and to inhibit the metabolic activity of Thiobacillus ferroxidans which catalyses the oxidation of sulfide minerals. A series of timed static leaching tests were performed by reacting samples of mine tailings with two, five and ten per cent alkaline material in order to characterise geochemical balance between liquid and solid phases. Column tests have been set up with oxidised tailings, waste rock, CKD, and RMB. Column tests have been carried out to simulate layered co-mingling, covers, liners, and co-disposal of waste rock and tailings. Column leach tests were conducted in order to investigate the long-term neutralisation potential of alkaline materials and the drainage water quality. Bacteria counting were performed on each sample after testing. The results obtained show that the addition of alkaline materials permit the retention of near neutral conditions in the fine material layer, thus increasing water quality and preventing bacteria development. In fact, the pH results show that the use of five per cent, ten per cent CKD or ten per cent of a mixture of CKD and RMB permit the retention of neutral pH conditions in the reactive layer. At these percent rates, the concentrations of Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, and SO4 in solution are significantly reduced compared to those obtained with the tailings only. In presence of waste rock, the relative position of the fine material layer is important. When the fine material layer overlaying reactive waste rock is composted of reactive tailings with ten per cent CKD and ten per cent (CKD:RMB), a delay was observed before achievement of near neutral pH. The neutral pH conditions remain stable over time. The mixture of CKD and RMB provides a better short-term neutralisation than the use of CKD alone. The use of alkaline materials is beneficial in order to reduce the concentrations of Fe and other metals such as Cu and Zn as well as the number of viable bacteria. The use of ten per cent RMB alone does not involve the neutralisation of reactive tailings. In the cases where the fine-grained layer are below or mixed with the waste rocks, the near neutral pH values are directly reached with ten per cent CKD. However, the pH values decrease rapidly and the number of viable bacteria increases.

To obtain the best economic results in treating the comparatively high-grade ore of the Kalgurli Mine a good roast is essential, and the effort of this paper will be to briefly describe the plant and the conditions prevailing in roasting, which, on an output of about 360 tons daily, subsequently enable an average extraction of slightly over 94% of the gold to be maintained.The percentage of sulphur in the ore varies between 2'5 and 3'5, the lower figure existing when treating oxidized ore. The average gold value is 13 dwt; this occurs chiefly as sylvanite, containing .a lower percentage of silver than is usually present in that mineral. One ore body in the mine contains hessite (Ag2Te) in considerable quantity, associated with gold telluride, and when ore from this stope is being treated the silver contents rise to as high as 20 dwt, but the usual amount is about 9 dwt. per ton, of which only a small proportion is extracted. Other metallic minerals, in addition to pyrite, occurring more or less commonly, are arsenopyrite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, and the tellurides calaverite (AuTez)and coloradoite HgzTe3). A small proportion only of the value occurs as free gold.

Study on Preparation and Gel Performance of High Purity Montmorillonite In order to research the colloidal and thixotropic performance of the inorganic gel prepared by high purity montmorillonite, this study uses the moderate grade bentonite ores from Weifang (China) as raw material. Two-stage hydrocyclone classification was applied to obtain the high purity montmorillonite with its content of 94.8 per cent. In contrast to other methods of montmorillonite purification, two-stage purification by hydroclone has the advantages of larger throughput and easily achieving auto-control in industry, and purified products with different montmorillonite content can be obtained by this method. And then the inorganic gel was prepared by the prepared high purity montmorillonite and its colloidal and thixotropic performances by measuring the flowability and thixotropy were further studies. Research results show that the inorganic gel has plastic body liquidity, the viscosity decreases with the increase of the shear rate, the static and dynamic shearing stress values are 33.98 Pa and 91.89 Pa, respectively, and the thixotropic value is 95.2 dyne+s/cm2, which indicates that it has preferable colloidal and thixotropic performance. Montmorillonite inorganic gel prepared by bentonite with high montmorillonite content and low-layer charge has better gel performance.

In Finland fogging in mine ramps is a common problem. Fog forms when warm and humid exhaust air moves upwards the ramp, where the skin temperature of surrounding wallrock decreases to about 10¦C. Changes in fog thickness and lengths of fog-filled parts of the ramp depend at least on climatic conditions outside, diesel equipment usage in the mine, and the length of working sequence at a time. In this study fogging problems in three different mines, namely Orivesi mine, Louhi mine and PyhSsalmi mine, with different ore types, different layouts, and different depths are presented and compared. All these mines use diesel equipment and the ramp is used as an exhaust air route. In two of these mines the ramp is used as a haulage road and in the other for supply and repairing, checking, and surveying purposes. Measurements of humidity, temperature, air velocity, and dust content were performed in these mines. The measurement results, as well as field observations are presented, compared, and discussed. The results show that fog is observed in areas with high relative humidity values when air temperature and dew point temperature are less than 3¦C apart from each other. Air velocity values were high in many areas. In addition, measured particle concentration values were mainly high in areas, where fog was observed. A short literature review of recent fog formation studies is also presented. It demonstrates the complicacy of the fog formation process. Similarities and differences concerning fog problems in the ramps are found and presented. As already a lot of new information is gained, the continuation of research is considered plausible to find more economical ways of solving and preventing this problem in the future.

The Coeur d'Alene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. Mesothermal silver-lead-zinc veins occur in the metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup with five main types of associated hydrothermal alteration: 1) feldspar destruction, 2) hydrothermal bleaching, 3) carbonatisation, 4) sulfidation, and 5) silicification. Hydrothermal bleaching is characterised by hematite destruction with associated siderite and quartz veins and veinlets, coarse euhedral pyrite and magnetite. Bleached zones envelop both mineralised and barren veins and extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Carbonatisation consists of addition of siderite, which occurs as veins, veinlets, stockwork, irregular blebs or spots, and coarsely disseminated grains, depending on the relative distance from the main vein structure. Siderite envelops nearly all mineralised veins, relates to all other alteration types and extends from several metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Pyrite and galena alteration dominate sulfidation and are associated with some mineralised veins. Pyrite alteration strongly correlates with siderite alteration and exists in three main forms: a) very fine-grained pyrite flooding, which can extend for metres to tens of metres into wall rocks; b) coarse-grained, euhedral pyrite, which is sporadic and associated with the redox boundary in hydrothermally bleached zones; and c) small isolated zones (6 - 15 cm) of medium-grained, subhedral to euhedral pyrite associated with pervasive siderite alteration. Where present, disseminated galena extends for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Silicification is characterised by veins, veinlets, stringers, irregular patches and variable hardness in siltites and commonly appears in association with hydrothermal bleaching and siderite alteration. Although related to mineralisation, silicification is sporadic and in most places a clear envelope around mineralised veins cannot be identified.

Loubert Witbank is a defunct coal mine situated near Ermelo in South Africa. Mining ceased in 1992, and within a short period acidic decant occurred, with a significant impact on the regional catchment. The problem was studied during 1996/1997, and the site remediated in 2001/2002 by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Remediation involved primarily submerging of carbonaceous material, backfilling of voids, and capping of the site. Acidic water with high iron levels was also neutralised and discharged. The project was used to assess the cost benefit of different options to the downstream users, from which target expenditure was derived for the various improvements. The cost benefit analysis for neutralisation provided a basis for the investigation of low-cost neutralisation options that are robust enough to be applied in a remote environment.

At 11 am Monday 8 September 1997, the successful detonation of the 5/9 Mass Blast at Pasminco - Elura was signified by the subsiding of æMt KevinÆ (a 15 m high earth fill mound). The blast was in response to earlier mine subsidence, which holed through to the surface affecting future stability of underground workings. The blast was a first for Elura which fires small tonnages regularly to avoid rapid oxidation of the ore. This paper discusses the strategy and the considerable planning that went into EluraÆs first blast of this magnitude in order to succeed first time round.

Ore selection is generally a highly subjective task, with emphasis on producing product with a consistent target grade matching a perceived market requirement. A composite selection criterion ‘Comp’ (a linear function of the grade vector) can be used to maximise ore tonnage at a specified target grade (in Fe and contaminants) extractable from a block model. The blocks correspond to the selective mining units, with grades interpolated from diamond drill hole data. An iterative procedure has been developed to identify the coefficients and cut-off value for the composite function ‘Comp’, maximising potential ore tonnage at target grade.Commonly, target grade is predetermined by marketing; however, there is no guarantee that maximising ore tonnage at a specified target grade maximises the potential value of the mine. If the value of ore could be expressed as a linear function of the grade components, then these coefficients would be appropriate for the selection criterion ‘Comp’. The cut-off value for ‘Comp’ would correspond to the marginal cost of production; all blocks with a ‘Comp’ score above the cut-off would be classified as ore; and the cumulative grade of these ore blocks would be the average product grade over the life of the mine.Unfortunately, no such value function for iron ore is generally available. Methods for estimating the value function are discussed, using the spot price and sensitivities based either upon operational tolerances for Fe and the contaminants or upon published price differentials. This approach has been applied to an anonymous Pilbara deposit with about one million blocks averaging 1.1 kt. It is shown how the optimal target grade, cut-off grade and maximum tonnage can all be explored as a function of marginal cost and iron ore price. Alternatively, given marginal cost and an iron ore price, the effects of changing the tolerances (and therefore the relative costs of the contaminants) can also be explored.It is suggested this procedure can enable informed decision-making for an iron ore mine. Rather than setting final policy for the entire life-of-mine, the method enables target grades and tonnage estimates to be revised by re-computation as the mine life proceeds to recognise changes in market conditions and knowledge about the resource.It should be emphasised that this paper is concerned with ore selection rather than ore sequencing. Appropriate ore selection is a necessary but not sufficient condition for maximising value. Having identified the set of blocks that potentially maximise value, the sequence in which they are mined will present a trade-off between producing at constant grade and extracting high value ore early. The sequencing issue is not considered here. It is shown that optimum ore selection for an open pit mine is independent of any consideration of discount rates, although ore sequencing will depend upon the time value of money if the product grade is to vary across time.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. In large coal strip mines, there are many different processes at work: stripping, overburden removal using trucks/shovels, cast blasting, slot dozer pushing, more fragmentation and further truck/shovel benches. A key component to each of these steps is the use of machines. In modern operations, most machine costs are tracked within Enterprise systems that transact costs and repair work order management. Similarly, in contemporary mines most machines are tracked using technology that provides precise performance measures for each key process. Such technologies include productivity monitors on draglines, dozers and drills and fleet management systems for trucks and shovels. Linking these two sources of seemingly disparate data û costs and performance by machine û would allow for the precise calculation of unit costs by specific machine. This is similar to an activity-based costing system, except in this machine-based system, calculations are made at an even finer granular level. There are many uses for such an integrated information system in mine planning and performance management, both in real-time and through historical analysis.A real-time fleet costs (FLC) measurement process was developed as part of a larger blending-related, multi-million dollar project centred on a centralised remote control room developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management Mine Control Center. The FLC component of the overall blending system would allow a mine controller to manage the equipment fleet by viewing its cost in real time and, when mixed with other revenue-related components, the exact profit. For example, a mine controller may show high utilisation while still maintaining a production surplus. This could occur, for example, if the equipment is driven long distances. This might appear in traditional performance metrics as æhigh production performanceÆ, but in reality may prove less profitable. This paper discusses the technical development of the FLC, its deployment and its impact on controller performance, and compares mine profitability before and after its application.

Emulsion explosives are a common industrial explosive and have a non-ideal detonation behaviour. The detonation performance for a given product changes with the charge diameter, ground conditions, con?nement and density. The burning process of an emulsion explosive has been modelled with an ignition and growth model in the LS-DYNA code. The parameters in the burning rate function are calibrated by the detonation velocities and the detonation front curvature radii from emulsion explosive tests. A Perl program was developed for an efficient estimation of the parameters, and the results show that the calibrated parameters can predict both detonation velocities and the detonation front curvatures.CITATION:Yi, C, Nyberg, U and Johansson, D, 2015. Soluble salts can be removed from Bowmans lignite by water and acid leaching. The success of the removal of water soluble or acid exchangeable impurities is directly associated with the efficiency of dewatering these slurries. The filtration characteristics of a slurry at its natural pH (4.0) were poor, with a filter cake moisture of 65%. Acid treatment of the slurry at pH2 caused the filter cake moisture content to drop to 61 %. Various oils, oily surfactants and a flocculant were tested to determine the conditions for minimum filter cake moisture. A series of pilot scale filtration tests were conducted on flocculant dosed slurries with and without washing on a horizontal test unit. Moisture contents of 54% were obtained in laboratory testing using high additions of oily surfactant. For the pilot scale test work, moisture levels close to 60% were obtained with low flocculant additions, similar to results obtained in laboratory studies. Removal of soluble salts could be correlated directly to the final moisture content of the filter cake. This process of leaching followed by filtration resulted in the removal of approximately 75% (more than 80% with washing on the cloth) of the sodium chloride originally present in the lignite.

Development of the Greenvale orebody, containing 40,000,000 tonnes of nickel ore, began in 1971 and production commenced in 1974. Annual capacity is 2,800,000 wet tonnes. The variations in ore grade and physical characteristics which occur throughout the ore- body had a major influence on the selection of mining methods, grade control procedures, and equipment. After removal of overburden by scrapers, ore is excavated by draglines sidecasting into windrows. Feed to the crushing plant is .reclaimed by front end loaders into rear dump trucks according to a grade selection pro- gramme. After crushing, ore is stockpiled into blended units of ore of required quality. Ore is stacked and reclaimed for train loading using techniques designed to give maximum mixing of ore characteristics through Bach unit. These procedures are repeated on discharge at the plant site at Yabulu. The railway, constructed by Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd. to Q.G.R. standard, and operated by the Q.G.R., is 216 km long and includes eight major bridges and three tunnels. Two trains per day, one of four locomotives and 92 waggons, and one of three locomotives and 69 waggons, haul crushed ore to Yabulu. Train loading is semi-automatic. A small township and associated services have been constructed for employees at Green- Vale.

The BHAS copper-lead matte leach process, developed in Port Pirie, South Australia, has been in operation on a commercial scale since 1984. This process is one of many developed in the past decade to recover copper via the hydrometallurgical route. In essence, the process involves a single stage agitative leach of 100% -75um matte in an acid chloride-sulphate lixiviant with gaseous oxygen as oxidant. The leach temperature is controlled at 85¦C to assist with reaction kinetics. After leaching, divalent copper is recovered from solution via a conventional solvent extraction/electrowinning circuit to yield cathode copper for sale The BHAS matte leach process has several unique characteristics cf. other commercial oxidative acid leach processes. These include i) the use of gaseous 02 as oxidant ii) H2SO4 addition as make up acid iii) Relatively low chloride ion addition (30 g/1) For this reason, extensive work was carried out into the optimization of leaching by Meadows (1985). Variables investigated included ò Oxygen flow-rate ò Agitation intensity ò Leach temperature ò Free acidity ò Chloride ion concentration ò Matte particle size The current work was conducted to determine the effect of cooling rate, and hence mineralogy, on the leaching characteristics.
