The main asset of a mining company is the mineral resource; without resources there is no mining business and the infrastructure is useless. In this context the role of the mining geologist is to always keep the resource inventory to an optimum level for the mining business and to maximise the transformation of the resources into reserves in a multi- disciplinary work environment. In short, a ægood mining geologist has to always provide the best ore to the millÆ.To do his/her work properly, several technical skills are needed: to know how to observe and describe nature in order to optimise the data acquisition process, particularly when mapping; to have a good understanding of natural variability in order to develop proper sampling strategies and sample preparation protocols to minimise all the errors generated by the sampling process; to have a good understanding of assaying practices: their limitations as well as their assaying errors; to carefully and properly store the geological data and information and to preserve the geological patrimony; to fully understand ore forming processes to generate the best possible geoscientific models, which are fundamental for the mining business; to fully understand the consequences of the geoscientific models along the value chain from rock to cathodes; and to continuously validate and improve geological practices and models by continuous data collection and observation of geo- mining-metallurgy processes. Some very important behavioural competencies are also needed:long-term vision, passion for excellence and value generation, strategic influence, systemic and innovative thinking, and knowledge and experience transfer. Last but not least, it is important to point out that a deep knowledge of the mining business is essential to add value by using geology best practices.

The extractive phase of broad-scale mining can have major impacts on landscapes and associated ecosystems. Post-mining ecological rehabilitation typically starts with reconstructing topography. A fairly common industry practice has been to use landform elements such as plateaus, terraces, and gentle slopes for stabilisation purposes. However, this approach can lead to the generation of fairly uniform landforms that do not necessarily reflect natural ecosystems. Previous research in undisturbed and agricultural landscapes shows that ecological attributes and diversity in microclimates is positively correlated with landform heterogeneity. An objective of this study was to investigate if those findings are still valid in post-mining rehabilitating landscapes on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. We investigated the relationship between landform heterogeneity and status of ecological recovery. The landform heterogeneity is measured through variance in three landform characteristics (relief, slope, aspect) using remote-sensing data and the status of ecological recovery is represented by ecological indicators measured through field surveys. The results indicate strong correlations between landform heterogeneity indices and native vegetation species richness with sensitivity to the spatial scale of investigation. It is recognised that climate, substrate and rehabilitation practices act as primary drivers of rehabilitation success. However, the results indicate that, in some examples, landform heterogeneity (heterogeneity in relief and slope angles) contributes up to 30 to 50?per?cent of the variance in native vegetation species richness. While the primary drivers of ecological recovery are difficult to control over extensive areas and extended time periods, landform heterogeneity provides a tool to indirectly control the micro-environmental parameters to improve ecological recovery. Reducing the uncertainties in the choice of ecological and landform indices and the degree of landform heterogeneity suitable for particular rehabilitating landscapes would be site specific. The introduction of desired landform heterogeneity may provide a very effective tool for significant improvement in ecological rehabilitation across broad-scale post-mine landscapes, an outcome of benefit to industry, government and local communities.CITATION:Datar, A and Mulligan,?D,?2014. The paper describes the surface chemistry and particle physics that control the fundamental flow properties (Theology) of mineral particle slurries. We further address, through a series of case studies, the design data that emerges from experimental studies of the flow properties of complex, high volume fraction mineral slurries. The case studies are drawn from mineral oxide concentrate processes, tailings dewatering operations and from filter cake production and management. The paper emphasises the essential links between design of process slurry handling systems and the control of the flow of such slurries by control of the pulp chemistry.

Both the miner and the Regional Water Board have legal obligations to ensure that all discharges of water from a mine site are free of harmful wastes, and that proper authorisation is obtained to abstract, divert, or discharge water. This requires long-term planning of water management for the whole of the mine site. Guidance is given in the paper on the issues which must be covered in water right applications.

Slag foaming is an important control item in the process of refining molten steel. This study aims to investigate the factors controlling slag foaming by observing the bubble formation behaviour resulting from the chemical reaction between iron oxide and Fe-C alloy in the slag. In this study, 0.06 g of Fe- C alloy was introduced at the bottom of a BN crucible, and 6.0 g of slag (SiO2:CaO:Fe2O3 = 40:40:30) was placed on top of it. The crucible was positioned inside an infrared image heating furnace, where the temperature was rapidly raised to 1370°C at a rate of 1000°C/min in a nitrogen stream, and then held at that temperature for a predetermined time before rapid cooling. Following rapid cooling, the internal structure of the sample was examined using a high-resolution X-ray CT device. The spherical equivalent volume was calculated based on the number of observed bubbles and their equivalent circle diameter. Additionally, the relationship between the volume ratio of small bubbles in the slag volume and the distance from the bottom of the crucible was determined, along with the calculation of bubble density and volume ratio. Under various experimental conditions, numerous bubbles with equivalent circular diameters ranging from 200 to 300 μm were consistently observed. The density and volume fraction of bubbles with circular equivalent diameters between 200 and 500 μm showed a tendency to increase as the distance from the bottom of the crucible increased. Bubbles with equivalent circular diameters of 500 μm or more consistently exhibited lower bubble densities, regardless of their height within the crucible. The formation of larger bubbles is attributed to a decrease in iron oxide concentration within the slag as the reaction progresses. However, this is believed to be due to their higher buoyancy, resulting in shorter residence times within the slag and a reduction in the number of encapsulated bubbles.

Lateritic nickel ore occurs as a supergene or residual deposit as a result of the tropical weathering of underlying ultramafic rocks. The mineralisation may be as hydrated Ni-Mg silicates, like garnierite (silicate ore); or as hydrated Ni-Fe oxide (oxide) ore. Non-sulphide ore represents only 30% of the tonnage mined, but represents 85% of the total world's nickel reserves. A typical lateritic profile consists of 4 zones above the unweathered ultramafic parent rock: Zone 1: the "upper laterite" which is dark red-brown, porous and concentrically structured. It contains 0.2 to 0.8% Ni, 48.0 to 72.0% Fe, and 0 to 9.5% MgO. It is often capped by a ferricrete crust. Zone 2: the "middle laterite", which is red-brown to light brown and more porous than the above zone. It contains 0.8 to 1.5% Ni, 42.0 to 48.0% Fe and 0.5 to 6.0% MgO. Electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts contain significant quantities of zinc, found almost entirely as either zinc oxide or zinc ferrite. The dust has been classified as a hazardous waste due to the relative high lead, cadmium and hexavalent chromium contents. It is important that environmentally acceptable processes be developed to treat this waste. One possible process involves reacting the zinc compounds in the dust with metallic iron, thus avoiding zinc vapour reoxidation by CO2 as occurs in carbon reduction processes. It consists of two stages where the first is the reduction of iron oxides to iron and the second the reduction of zinc oxide to zinc vapour by the iron. In this work the effects of operating variables such as temperature, CO/CO2 ratio and pressure on the recovery of zinc from an industrial EAF dust obtained from the Smorgon Steel Mill were investigated. Zinc recoveries in the second stage were found to approach 100 per cent at 1000oC after about four hours in nitrogen but within 40 minutes if a low vacuum was used.

To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

Conventional batch cell and FASTFLOT pilot plant studies of reverse flotation of coarse marcasite and pyrite (100 - 400 μm) to reduce the sulphidic sulphur content of a rutile concentrate, were undertaken. The batch cell experiments found no significant improvement in sulphur removal with acid wash and copper activation of marcasite and pyrite. Batch cell trials also identified potential difficulties of conventional mechanical cell plants operated at 40 per cent w/w solids. The FASTFLOT 250 B-2 pilot plant trials indicated that with a 0.6 - 0.7 per cent w/w feed sulphur content, target product grade can be met on a routine basis by a three-stage FASTFLOT plant floating coarse marcasite and pyrite. The trials found that 150 g/t PAX dosage and 15 minutes conditioning time are adequate reagentisation for 40 per cent w/w solids feed to the FASTFLOT plant.

For a blast to be successful both heave and fragmentation must be satisfactory. Amongst the major factors influencing blasting are rock properties. This paper considers the effect of rock density on fragmentation and heave and how better results can be achieved in dense ore. Patterns which increase the heave and give better fragmentation are examined and the application of theory to the blasting of the Dales Gorge Haematite, density 4.2 - 4.5 t.m.,3 is then discussed. The drilling of staggered patterns instead of square patterns and a shallower 'V' initiation system has given better heave and fragmentation. This practice has re- duced backbreak and improved toe conditions; these factors have resulted in increased load ing rates. There has been an increase in the lump/fine ratio which is consistent with the theory although other factors such as ground conditions could have contributed.

In the economic evaluation of any Australian mining project, changes in taxation can significantly affect viability. Australian tax laws, particularly in the period since early 1973, have undergone many changes which have led to shifts in the profitability of mining companies. This paper examines the sensitivity of a selected, broadly based sample of Australian mining companies to the changes that have occurred, or are reasonably likely to occur, in taxation legislation. In the past, tax systems have been altered for a variety of reasons, such as 1. reduction'in the impact of inflation 2. neutralization of incidence between different sections of the economy 3. as an incentive to encourage expansion and growth in a particular industry or area, and 4. increase in the real "take" of government. In this paper, conventional rate of return analyses are applied in a study of how profitability is affected under various taxation systems.

Batterham and Algie began their paper on: `The role of technology in the minerals industry' (1995) by noting that while: it is often stated that innovation is central to the economic survival of mining and minerals processing in the face of global competition, .. . technology is often far from a core strategy in our industry. This point is correct. Throughout the world, as a broad generalisation, mining companies do not value technology development as a principal means of gaining competitive advantage. It is important to understand why this is the case. Batterham and Algie address this question by making distinctions between innovation, technology and research. They note that while: all successful (mining) companies are good at innovation . . . that innovation can proceed without any research and development and that it is innovation that generates the competitive advantage, not research and development per se. In this paper we accept these arguments. However, our focus is somewhat different. Whereas Batterham and Algie took a mining company's perspective on the technologies of mining and processing, we take a broader view of the opportunities for technology development for company Australia but, in order to focus the argument, we restrict our discussion to the area of mining (rather than processing); we focus particularly on mining systems and mining equipment. We begin by looking at the motivation of companies operating in any industrial sector to invest in research and development. Figure 1 recognises four levels of industrial maturity. For companies in the embryonic and growth stages R&D often is essential to initiating and developing the business. Mining, on the other hand, is a mature industry. In mature industries the conventional roles for R&D are to reduce costs, to extend product differentiation, or to develop new technology with the aim of rejuvenating the business. Next we ask whether these general-industry arguments apply to the mining industry. If they do then the mining industry should value R&D more highly; after all cost reductions and business rejuvenation are goals that are worth achieving. On the other hand if, for whatever reason, these general arguments do not apply to mining then this may lead the mining industry to invest only modestly, or not at all, in R&D. In this event, while this may be a rational decision for the mining industry, it may not be in the best interest of a nation like Australia where revenues from the sale of mineral products represent an important part of the country's economy.

The following thesis is an outcome of an investigation undertaken by the writer, at the suggestion of Professor Skeats, of the dykes and associated auriferous reefs of the Walhalla-Wood's Point belt, with the view of determining what relation, if any, existed between the petrological nature and the extent of llietasomatic alteration undergone by the dykes, and the genesis and localization of the gold.Although the greater part of the writer's time in the field and laboratory was occupied in studying the dykes and auriferous occurrences, a study was also made of the general geology as a basis for the special investigation. In addition, it soon became evident in the field that secondary enrichment had played a marked part in re-concentrating the gold and some interesting data in this connection have been collected. For example, indubitable evidence has been found of nuggets of gold having been formed by secondary processes.

However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

The Amazon Craton is one of the largest cratonic areas and comprises one of the est-endowed metallogenic provinces in the world. It hosts a number of different ore deposit types for which a variety of mineral exploration data are presently available at various scales and formats. These data, however, are not properly organised nor integrated by means of advanced spatial analysis tools. In this view, here we present a suite of neural network methods that were applied to these data, providing unprecedented mineral potential scenarios for several precious and base metals in the region. The Cawse nickel project is a new generation pressure acid leach (PAL), solvent extraction and electrowinning process used to produce LME grade nickel metal and cobalt sulphide concentrate containing 40 per cent cobalt by treating nickel and cobalt oxide ores from a lateritic ultramafic profile. The project is located 50 kilometres NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. The commercial success of the Cawse nickel operation is dependent in part upon the ability of the principal ore type to be beneficiated. A simple process of rejecting lower grade material on the basis of particle size achieves this. The process is called upgrading and allows subgrade material to become commercial ore grade and also allows higher ore grades to be processed in the early parts of the operation. The success of the upgrade process is dependent upon the physical and chemical properties of the ore being processed and the nickel grade of the ore. The upgrade ore type represents >80 per cent of the Cawse nickel resource and is hosted mostly within a limonite unit, represented by goethitic clays in the upper saprolite zone. In the upgrade processing circuit the ore is crushed and slurried. It is then passed over a series of screens that remove all material over 0.5 mm. This ensures that coarse material is removed from the main ore stream. Upgrade is reliant on selectively rejecting lower grade or barren material, which can include silica, magnesite and relict saprock. To predict leach feedgrade, the grade control estimates the head grade and upgrade percentage for all ore delivered to the run of mine ore pad. To do this reverse circulation (RC) drill holes are logged for ore type, assayed for a range of elements and undergo simulated upgrade testwork. The percentage and grade of material rejected through the upgrade circuit has the most influence on upgrade per cent. This reject is determined by the physical properties of the rock mass and drum scrubber parameters. The correlation between nickel upgrade and reject can be established to predict upgrade from the known mass reject. Parcels of upgrade ore milled to date closely follow projected correlation trends. Upgrade circuit results have been excellent, with average nickel grades upgrading by 34 per cent, cobalt by 23 per cent, with 55 per cent mass passing.

Equity finance provides the most suitable and frequently the only access to capital during the exploration and evaluation stages of resource projects when project risk is at its highest. Investors are prepared to provide equity funds in the knowledge that they are compensated for the higher risk they take on with higher potential returns or sufficient upside potential to justify the higher risk. The context of resource projects which determines the role of equity finance has changed considerably. Prior to the resurgence of the gold price and the development of new mining technology many resource projects were selectively mining orebodies by underground methods frequently with limited reserves proved up in advance of mining. The limited proved ore reserves base and the volatility of the gold price all contributed to a higher risk and higher return investment environment in which the use of equity finance was more appropriate and frequently the only option for capital raising. The financial risk of a resources project can be transferred to an underwriter who makes the commitment to distribute the financial risk between a number of investors. There is also the opportunity for financiers to use a mix of equity and debt finance to allow a company to proceed with the development stage where without such a mix the resource project would not proceed. By using a level of equity finance the project becomes robust enough in its ability to service the debt finance facility and the project proceeds with the equity participants receiving a suitable risk reward return. The liquidity from the establishment of a market for the company's securities enhances further capital raising and generally enables the company to satisfy its financial requirements on more favourable terms particularly during bull markets. The role of equity finance in the management of the financial risk during the exploration, evaluation, development and mining stages of resource projects is summarised in Table 1. In more detail the principal roles of equity finance and the ways in which equity finance impact on the risk management of resource projects will be considered in turn.
